Humour is a phenomenon that is pervasive in the human heritage in all its different ethnic and cultural diversity; however, humorous effects might exceed the mere pleasure or laughter to serve as a strategy of survival. Hybrid humour has an important societal role in breaking psychological barriers between people as well as in denouncing dominant discourses, criticizing realities and promoting resistance. This paper investigates hybrid humour as cultural translation, particularly Beur verbal humour in France. The first section of this paper explores the notion of cultural translation. In the second section, in order to conceptualize humour from different angles, I attempt to highlight the main theories in Humour Studies. The third part is devoted to investigate the hybridization of cultures from a postcolonial perspective, and subsequently interpret the notion of hybrid humour as a translational act. Finally, I analyze a set of hybrid jokes made by the Franco-Algerian humourist Fellag.

La palabra francesa arabe («árabe») está en el origen del término francés beur que se creó en verlan para designar a las personas nacidas en Francia cuyos padres o abuelos fueron inmigrantes provenientes del Magreb. Tras una breve descripción sobre cómo se formó dicho término en francés durante la década de los ochenta del siglo pasado, este artículo, primero, se plantea por qué el femenino del mismo es beurette y no beure para luego exponer cómo se han realizado unos muy determinados tipos de traducción de la identidad del Otro en otro tiempo colonizado. Que beur sea el perfecto homófono de beurre (mantequilla) en francés conlleva una serie de consecuencias simbólicas que se resumen en la nula voluntad política del Estado francés de traducir, adecuada y correctamente, todas las pertenencias de la identidad mestiza de las personas nacidas en Francia con orígenes magrebíes, en aras de una supuesta «integración» republicana francesa. Se han creado, en el uso popular de la lengua francesa, dos neologismos (beur y beurette) que, dada su dificultad de traducción, han sido exportados a otras lenguas como préstamos léxicos pero su correcta interpretación en las mismas deja mucho que desear. Hacia el final del artículo se presenta una reflexión crítica, a modo de conclusión, sobre los términos beur y beurette como «intraducibles» en el sentido apuntado por Barbara Cassin y se propone cómo poder resolver la aparente contradicción de traducir «lo intraducible» cuando quien traduce e interpreta sabe situarse «entre» lenguas y culturas, gracias a la noción de paratraducción.

Loubna Meliane has 38 years, she was in sixth position on the departmental list of the union of the left in regional elections in December 2015 and she is elected to her first term. This is following a path marked by her action in favor of women's rights. The activist pupil has been the Vice-president of SOS Racisme and has campaigned since 2003 alongside the socialist Fadela Amara (the future Secretary of State Policy of the City of the second government of Francois Fillon) for a better France, for a more generous country and for the freedom of women. If Loubna Meliane is a French political activist, she is also a writer of Moroccan origin, born in France from Moroccan immigrant parents in Dijon in the 70. Between two cultures, the young Loubna feels soon differences separate the two worlds. Loubna Meliane is the Voice of resistance and engagement to group dimension, she is the representative of a generation explicitly mingled with politics, and she campaigned to advance. "Castigat ridendo mores" or correcting men by entertaining them said Molière in Tartuffe's preface: It is from this principle that this article was written to show to what extent this process is used by Azouz Begag in the writing of his novels, in the aim to focus on some mentalities and practices that exist in Algeria or in France and that may prevent both nations from understanding each other. Using humour as a writing strategy with Begag is a result of his own personality or may it be a sort of pretence to reduce the emotional charge that characterizes this kind of writing or novels called "beurs"., “Castigat ridendo mores” ou corriger les hommes en les divertissant disait Molière dans la préface de Tartuffe : c’est à partir de ce principe que cet article fut rédigé afin de montrer à quel point ce processus est utilisé par Azouz Begag dans la rédaction de ses romans est cela dans le but de mettre l’accent sur certaines mentalités et pratiques qui existent en Algérie ou en France et qui empêcheraient les deux peuples de se comprendre mutuellement. L’usage de l’humour comme stratégie d’écriture chez Begag découle-t-il de sa propre personnalité ou bien ne serait-il qu’un artifice employé afin de réduire cette charge émotionnelle qui caractérise ce genre d’écriture ou de romans dit « beurs ».

The article illustrates the French identity and the articulation of cultural pluralism and difference using the case of the Beur FM. Beur FM promotes a sense of ethnic solidarity among a beur diaspora in France, which does not negate its attachment to French identity. The fears of those who think ethnic broadcasting is inescapably isolating appear to be unfounded in the experience of Beur FM since ethnicity in this context is widely seen as liberating rather than constricting. This is the experience of those whose sense of identity has been suspended for a long time compared with new arrivals whose cultural frame of reference is still relatively stable and bounded.

The dissertation proposes a new historical understanding of Palestinian, Israeli and French-Algerian (Beur) literary imagination beginning in the second half of the twentieth century. This line of thought concentrates on the relationship between literary production and state formation, and in so doing contests and at times rejects the historical and aesthetic categories of post-Zionism and postcolonial studies, which privilege nationalism and its ideological content. Taking a new direction, the dissertation advances two claims. First, I argue that to understand changes in literary form, as well as the conditions for the emergence of aesthetic autonomy we need to account for the changing conjuncture of global capital, national political forms and the entry of immigrant population into civil society. I maintain that as economic liberalization processes separate the categories of the personal and the political, whether in a nationalist or ethnicized communities, civil society, as the site of the private, emerges as a semiautonomous third term, providing the ground and forms of literary imagination. My inquiry is then attentive to the consequences of privatization - establishment of NGOs in Palestine after the 1993 Oslo Accords, liberalization in Israel beginning in 1985, and the shift of the Algerian community from immigrants to citizens in France in the early 1980s - and understands them as moments of historical and aesthetic transformation. Second, as the sphere of private life (civil society) is separated from the sphere of the political (state), the conditions for "aesthetic autonomy" in Immanuel Kant's sense of an aesthetic activity lacking a concept emerge. For if in the first historical moment the immediacy of the "the political" provided the determinate concept, or universal, for the literary work, in the second moment the social separation of the "political" from the "private" allows for the indeterminate relation between the particular and the universal, akin to reflective (aesthetic) judgments in Kant's sense. In Palestine (Ch. 1), I trace the changes in literary political imagination as Palestine enters the global network of foreign capital flows. Such changes are associated with the creation of proto-state institutions such as the Palestinian National Authority (PA), but more importantly with the constitution of a professional civil society in the form of foreign funded NGOs. Such changes initiated a symbolic separation between the political and civil spheres and correspondingly reoriented the literary gaze. As a civil activity, separated from the Palestinian national struggle, now novels not only imagine Palestine through the individual lives of private citizens gazing into the political as a separate sphere, they are also written for a global rather than a Palestinian readership. Comparing between Sahar Khalifeh's Wild Thorns (al-Subar, 1976) and the 21st century works of Adania Shibli, I demonstrate how the latter develops figures of "inwardness" - diaries, letters, perception - that re-imagine the relation between the subject of civil society and the sphere of the political. In Israel (Ch. 2, 3), I trace the shift from Zionist-centric to a neoliberal imagination through readings in Shimon Ballas's trilogy Tel-Aviv East, written in installments between 1950s and the 1990s. Following new globalization studies on Israel, I show that since 1985 the liberalization of the Israeli economy altered the statist model and brought about the autonomization of civil society in which private interests began operating separately from the state. Drawing from these studies, I argue that such a structural transition concomitantly altered both social subjectivities and the manner in which Israeli society is imagined. In Ballas's first and second installments, The Transit Camp and Tel-Aviv East (1950s; 1960s) we see how the struggle between the Zionist state and the Mizrahi subaltern constitutes the spatio-temporal dimensions of the world such that the outcome of the struggle is bound up with the fate of the novelistic world and its space-time. In comparison, the third installment, Outsiders (1990s), imagines a world where characters meet each other not as political subjects but as private producers and distributors of texts on the grounds of a cultural industry allegorized as the Israeli society as a whole. With the evacuation of the temporality of political organization, the novel takes a synchronic temporality, a spatial urban mapping based on the principle of paradigmatic equivalence where all characters meet each other as equivalent identities. In France (Ch. 4, 5), I argue that the shift of the Algerian immigration from the category of "migrant labor" devoid of political rights to the category of "citizen" in the 1980s concomitantly altered the nature of their literary production. If the post-1945 generation was exclusively inscribed in the category of labor and in the aesthetic category of "testimony" in which no separation exists between the body of the immigrant and his speech, then with the entry into the French state and the separation of the private from the political, work from culture, intellectual from manual labor, the conditions for the autonomy of the signifier emerged. This change is most evident in the generic shift from Mehdi Charef's picaresque novel Tea in the Harem (Le thé au harem d'Archi Ahmed, 1983) to Azouz Begag's bildungsroman Shantytown Kid (Le gone du Chaâba, 1986).

Na sequência, apresentaremos como alguns tipos muito específicos de tradução da identidade do Outro foram realizadas em outros tempos colonizados. O fato de beur ser um homófono perfeito de beurre (manteiga) em francês acarreta uma série de consequências simbólicas que se resumem na nula vontade política do governo francês de traduzir, adequada e corretamente, todos os pertencimentos da identidade mestiça das pessoas nascidas na França com origens magrebinas, em prol de uma suposta “integração” republicana francesa. Assim, no uso coloquial da língua francesa, foram criados, em verlan, dois neologismos (beur e beurette) que, dada a sua dificuldade de tradução, foram exportados para outras línguas como empréstimos lexicais, mas a correta interpretação desses termos deixa muito a desejar. This article examines the extent to which L'Esquive, the winner of four Césars in 2005, follows the recent traditions of beur and banlieue film-making in France, which, since the mid-1980s, have traced the particular histories of immigrant and marginalized populations that have otherwise largely gone underrepresented in French cinema (Tarr 2005). These films, as Carrie Tarr would put it, ‘reframe difference’ in order to highlight the ways in which France's self-conception as a nation state sometimes occludes certain identifications articulated by marginalized individuals and groups. In so doing, many of these films call into question the French model of integration by highlighting the extent to which socio-political and ideological factors have a hand in marginalizing these individuals. While one observes in L'Esquive many of the hallmarks of other banlieue films before it, this film nevertheless sets itself apart in the way it reframes the relationship between high and popular culture through its explicit and very conscious use of language. By juxtaposing the eighteenth century playwright Marivaux's play Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard and the street slang of the Parisian banlieues, L'Esquive puts into question the very divide between high and low cultures. This article explores the implications of such a juxtaposition of different registers by taking into account both the film's production values (casting, budget, etc.) and the impact of its tremendous success at the Césars, as well as the way in which the film deftly deconstructs the much propagated stereotype of a necessarily violent banlieue. Through such sensitive and nuanced portrayal of banlieue life, L'Esquive goes a long way in laying bare some of the otherwise-hidden stakes of the French model of integration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. Jamel Debbouze: A new popular French star?

In the current French popular cinema industry, stars no longer guarantee a film's success. However, the recent success story of Jamel Debbouze as a comedian and actor is exceptional, and hardly fits the archetype of traditional male French stardom. Debbouze was brought up in the Paris banlieue, and started out as a stand-up comedian. In 1998, he featured in two films, Le Ciel. les oiseaux... et ta mère (Bensalah)and Zonzon (Bouhnik). With Le Fabuleux destin d 'Amélie Poulain (Jeunet,2001), he gained greater international recognition, which was confirmed by the huge success of Astérix et Obélix:Mission Cléopâtre (Chabat,2002). This article seeks to determine the extent to which Jamel Debbouze stands as an obvious candidate for popular stardom, by analysing his 'successful Beur' star persona and comic screen image. It discusses his career in terms of it being representative of a new generation of popular stars imported from the worlds of television and show business, who have recently begun to take over French cinema screens and the celebrity magazines. According to Gérard Noiriel, immigrants have almost no place in the national memory of France, which seems to deny that its colonial past is inextricably linked to its current situation regarding North African immigrants and their descendants. In Parle mon fils parle à ta mere (1985) and Fatima ou les Algériennes au square (1981), Leïla Sebbar places North African immigrant women at the forefront of her narratives. These women construct memory as bricolage, using bits and pieces from their past, and confer it as a legacy to their children, who in turn absorb it or reject it along with the influence of French culture. The women thus reweave unofficial history; this places them in the shadow of the official 'grave-keepers' of memory. In so doing, their places in the margins of society can be viewed as 'radical spaces of openness' rather than closed spaces of victimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the term beur as well as the category it defines, both in terms of individuals who identify as beur, and the genre of literature that stems from the beur population in contemporary France. I begin by first suggesting that the notion of beur as a category and label serves as a third space in the binary of French culture and Maghrebi culture. This third space is necessary as the children of Maghrebi immigrants in France find themselves in between each culture and the sphere of influence that follows. The term is then problematized. The theme of binaries and the third spaces that emerge because of the problematic nature of the binaries is recurring throughout my study. I explore what these third spaces are by examining four contemporary French novels: Faïza Guène’s Kiffe kiffe demain and Un homme ça ne pleure pas, Ahmed Djouder’s Désintégration, and Brahim Metiba’s Ma mère et moi. The characters in each of these works struggle with their identity as they forge their own third spaces as solutions to various binaries that they discover they cannot fit into. In my study, I demonstrate this in three realms: integration and engaged citizenship; familial relationships, primarily parent-child relationships and the generational difference that further complicates pre-existing cultural difference; and gender roles. Each of the narratives and the main characters conveys the problematic nature of viewing French and Maghrebi culture in a binary. In my explication of the text, I argue that each narrative works towards the creation of a new third space in varying ways. Master of Arts

Au tournant du nouveau millénaire, le « français des cités » , parler codé né dans les quartiers extra muros des grandes villes françaises, est devenu un langage littéraire de plus en plus exploité par de nombreux écrivains. Pour s’en rendre compte, il suffit de penser aux ouvrages de quelques écrivains « urbains », dont je me limite à citer ici Faïza Guène, Mabrouck Rachedi ou Rachid Djaïdani. La stratification langagière qui paraît dans leurs ouvrages ne se limite pas à la reproduction d’un sociolecte qui caractérise un groupe de personnages « marginaux », mais devient une véritable stratégie littéraire utilisée en tout état de cause. Ce procédé de dynamisation – et dynamitation – linguistique et littéraire fortifie les textes des auteurs urbains, mais contribue en même temps à les rendre apparemment « intraduisibles ». Et pourtant, ces écrivains extra muros dépassent de plus en plus les frontières de l’Hexagone. En m’appuyant sur mon expérience en tant que traductrice italienne de quelques-uns de ces écrivains , je propose un tour d’horizon des défis traductologiques que ces textes posent. Pour ce faire, je restreindrai l’analyse aux romans de l’écrivain d’origine algérienne Rachid Djaïdani , qui me paraissent, en ce sens, particulièrement représentatifs. Dans cet article, il sera question de voir non seulement quelles démarches et stratégies traductives on peut mettre en œuvre dans un contexte littéraire hybride , mais aussi de quelle manière la réflexion traductologique peut aider à éclairer les enjeux linguistiques et littéraires de ces textes.

Avec des exemples sélectionnés dans un corpus récemment recueilli en région parisienne (corpus MPF), les auteurs réfléchissent d’une part au possible impact de la personne/personnalité de l’enquêteur (dans certains de ses aspects), réelle ou telle que veut la percevoir l’enquêté ; d’autre part aux effets d’énonciation à la première personne dans des catégories d’identité « révolutionnaires » qui échappent aux catégories des sciences sociales traditionnelles. Through examples selected from a corpus recently collected in the suburbs of Paris (MPF corpus), the authors’ objectives are twofold. Firstly, they seek to investigate the possible effects of the person/personality of the researcher (at least in some of its dimensions), either real or alleged by the person interviewed ; secondly, they study the effects of first person enunciation when “revolutionary” identity categories, which are not addressed by traditional social sciences, are at stake.

Dans son roman Le Thé au harem d’Archi Ahmed, publié en 1983, Mehdi Charef, et avec lui d’autres écrivains issus de l’immigration maghrébine, nous invitait à réfléchir sur des questions qui deviendraient cruciales par la suite, celles de l’appartenance, de l’identité nationale, de l’hybridation culturelle et littéraire. La vague migrante maghrébine en France a conduit, en effet, non seulement à la naissance d’une nouvelle génération, née sur le sol français, mais aussi à celle d’une nouvelle littérature, destinée a se démarquer rapidement du canon de l’Hexagone. Bien que déclarée par certains «un enfant mort-né», la littérature en question n’a cessé de vivre et d’évoluer, au point qu’elle compte aujourd’hui quelque deux-cents ouvrages, dont la quasi totalité sont des romans. Mais comment a changé cette littérature, au cours de ces trente années? Quelles sont les différences qui marquent le passage des romans des initiateurs, dont par exemple Mehdi Charef, à ceux des auteurs plus récents, comme Rachid Djaïdani? A presque trente ans de la naissance de cet espace romanesque, je propose une «promenade dans le bois du roman beur», pour voir de quelle manière il a évolué.

La ville de Paris a toujours inspiré les écrivains. Mais qu’en est-il des banlieues qui l’entourent? Malgré ce que l’on pourrait penser, les cités extra muros ont engendré, elles aussi, une littérature foisonnante. Bâtis aux alentours des années 50 et 60, avec leur béton, leurs tours, leurs problèmes, ces “quartiers sensibles” sont devenus, au tournant du nouveau millénaire, plus qu’un motif d’écriture. Entre désir de représentation et volonté de critique, des écrivains “de banlieue”, issus de l’immigration, nés ou ayant vécu dans des cités, en ont fait le décor et le sujet de leurs romans. C’est le cas, entre autres, de l’écrivain d’origine algérienne Mabrouck Rachedi (Le Poids d’une âme, 2006; Détours, in Qui fait la France?, Chroniques d’une société annoncée, 2007; Le Petit Malik, 2008) et de l’algéro-soudanais Rachid Djaïdani (Boumkoeur, 1999; Mon nerf, 2004; Viscéral, 2007). Qu’est-ce que représente la banlieue pour ces écrivains et comment la représentent-ils? Quels sont les endroits qui entrent en jeu dans la fiction littéraire? Cette littérature qu’on appelle “urbaine”, constitue-t-elle une nouvelle façon de voir la ville de Paris ou risque-t-elle de se renfermer sur des clichés? Voici un petit voyage dans la (géo)graphie littéraire de la banlieue parisienne à travers les romans de quelques auteurs de l’extrême contemporain.

Polo, 14 anni, una madre disabile e un po’ assente fissata con le telenovelas, una sorella il cui unico pensiero sono i concorsi di bellezza e Priscilla, l’amica dei quartieri alti di cui è segretamente innamorato. E un padre affettuoso, ma atipico, di cui non può che vergognarsi. Per le battute fiacche, per i troppi che nella stessa frase. E perché fa la “donna” delle pulizie. Polo spesso, dopo la scuola, lo raggiunge per dargli una mano, perché così tornano a casa prima. E anche perché è suo padre. E tra un colpo di straccio e un giro di aspirapolvere, nella biblioteca del quartiere, cerca un riscatto nei libri. O meglio, nelle parole. Ne impara di nuove, si appunta quelle arroganti, sdegnose, trascendenti, “quelle che possono farti fare la peggior figuraccia della tua vita se non ne conosci il significato. Quelle che si permettono di avere tre consonanti di fila, come astruso. O addirittura quattro, come instradare”. Ma non c’è tempo per guardare, Polo è lì per pulire la biblioteca comunale e non per leggerla. Ma le parole restano e saranno la breccia per espugnare Priscilla che, chissà, forse un giorno potrebbe anche accorgersi di lui...

25 Jahre nach der „Marche des Beurs“ genannten landesweiten Demonstration von nordafrikanischen Einwandererkindern in Frankreich werden der soziale und politische Kontext dieser Bewegung sowie ihre Erfolge und Versäumnisse untersucht. These ist dabei, dass Konstellationen, die damals entstanden sind, auch gegenwärtige migrantische Kämpfe beeinflussen, wie sie sich v.a. im Zusammenhang mit den Auseinandersetzungen in den Vororten (banlieues) äußern. Dennoch ist die heutige „Generation der Wohnsiedlungen“ deutlich von der „Generation der Beurs“ unterschieden: trotz des zugespitzten gesellschaftlichen Kontextes ist eine Depolitisierung zu beobachten, die zusammengenommen mit dem Agieren des Staatspräsidenten Sarkozy Kämpfe der Migration in Frankreich heute vor neue Herausforderungen stellt. Abschließend werden daher antirassistische Strategien erörtert, die auf diese Herausforderungen zu antworten beanspruchen und die Erfahrungen der „Marche des Beurs“ kritisch aufnehmen., The present essay appears twenty-fi ve years after the ‘Marche des Beurs', the name given to demonstrations staged throughout France by the children of North African immigrants. It studies the social and political context of this movement, examining both its successes and its failures. By looking at the present-day conflicts in the suburbs (banlieues), it argues that the configurations that came about in the 1980s continue to influence immigrant struggles. Yet, despite this influence, today's ‘housing-estate generation' clearly differs from the ‘Beur Generation'. Thus, despite the tense social situation, a depoliticisation has occurred, which, in conjunction with the interventions of the French president Nicolas Sarkozy, has confronted immigrant struggles in contemporary France with new challenges. Accordingly, the essay concludes with a discussion on the anti-racist strategies that propose to take up these challenges, as well as critically assimilate the experiences of the ‘Marche des Beurs'.

Un adolescente di origine araba. Un quartiere di periferia. Una corda. Sono questi – e molti altri – gli ingredienti de Il peso di un’anima, sorprendente romanzo d’esordio dell’autore francese di origine algerina Mabrouck Rachedi, edito in Italia da Stampa Alternativa con una prefazione di Marco Aime. Il romanzo incomincia in una giornata come tante: alle otto del mattino, il diciottenne Lounès si prepara per andare a scuola. Non sa che qualche ora dopo finirà in carcere, accusato di essere un terrorista solo perché si trova al momento sbagliato nel posto sbagliato, con la pelle del colore sbagliato. Sullo sfondo di una banlieue parigina in fiamme scatta una caccia all’uomo senza precedenti e Lounès diventa un capro espiatorio ideale: da diciottenne figlio d’immigrati, eccolo trasformato dalla polizia e dalla stampa nel capo di una rete terroristica internazionale. Una triste storia se insieme alla discriminazione e alla ricerca del sensazionalismo non ci fosse anche altro: una professoressa che prende a cuore il “caso Lounès”, un giornalista in cerca della verità e un intero quartiere di periferia, fatto di persone di ogni colore, che si mobilita lanciandosi in un’avventura picaresca dall’epilogo inaspettato.

Nato altrove e arenato nella periferia povera di Parigi, il piccolo Lies ha coperto il rumore della discriminazione con la musica dei guantoni sul sacco. Ha sublimato la sua rabbia di sangue e viscere e l’ha trasformata in arte. E adesso, a ventitré anni, è una promessa del pugilato francese. Nutre i sogni dei giovani del quartiere allenandoli a diventare uomini e una volta a settimana aiuta i carcerati a sfogare gli incubi sopra un ring tracciato col gesso sul pavimento d’una cella. E sogna quello che sognano tutti i ventenni – ma i periferici a voce più alta: un oroscopo di successo e amore, e di serenità, anche sotto le stelle offuscate dai neon. Intorno a lui, le contraddizioni di una periferia del nuovo millennio, dove liberté-egalitéfraternité è un ritornello scritto su un tricolore senza vento. Perciò, nel ghetto della banlieue si va avanti solo coi sogni. E a quelli Lies si aggrappa con ostinazione, anche quando sembra stiano perdendo di senso, soppiantati da una realtà ben più spigolosa, amara. Ma quando tutto sembra volgere al peggio la ruota gira: l’incontro con una ragazza bellissima, un provino per un lungometraggio. Forse è davvero arrivata l’occasione. Forse.

This dissertation focuses on the implications and significance of the emergence and evolution, throughout the 80s and the 90s, of what has been termed beur literature. This literature consists of about thirty texts written by authors born of immigrants from the former French colonies in North Africa, mainly Algeria, and educated in France. While examining the social and historical contexts of their emergence, I argue that these narratives articulate the ambivalence and the differential function of the Beurs as a social body that is dominated, yet struggling for integration in the French nation, and in so doing redefining it. In the first chapter, I concentrate on the controversial denomination beur, used to designate the so-called second generation. I study the shifts in denomination (from second generation to beur) and how these shifts affect the representations that designate, as well as construct, these individuals as a group, and the self-representations of French society. The coinage of the word beur (derived from the word 'arabe') corresponds to a process of mediatization and an increase of visibility that culminated in the middle of the 1980s. The second chapter assesses the problematic relation that exists between visibility, representation, and actual social power and influence, and examines what is gained or lost through this process of recognition at the national level. In this context, the question Does a beur literature exist? is often asked by critics as well as by the authors themselves. The point of the third chapter is to understand why this question is being asked, and to determine the status given and/or denied to these narratives in the literary and cultural fields. The last two chapters emphasize the texts themselves. Using oppositional tactics, authors such as Farida Belghoul and Azouz Begag appropriate the national language while foregrounding its heterogeneity. Through their work on language and national representations, these texts make metropolitan literature francophone, and make literature serve a decolonizing function and become an overt arena of negotiations.

La palabra francesa arabe («árabe») está en el origen del término francés beur que se creó en verlan para designar a las personas nacidas en Francia cuyos padres o abuelos fueron inmigrantes provenientes del Magreb. Tras una breve descripción sobre cómo se formó dicho término en francés durante la década de los ochenta del siglo pasado, este artículo, primero, se plantea por qué el femenino del mismo es beurette y no beure para luego exponer cómo se han realizado unos muy determinados tipos de traducción de la identidad del Otro en otro tiempo colonizado. Que beur sea el perfecto homófono de beurre (mantequilla) en francés conlleva una serie de consecuencias simbólicas que se resumen en la nula voluntad política del Estado francés de traducir, adecuada y correctamente, todas las pertenencias de la identidad mestiza de las personas nacidas en Francia con orígenes magrebíes, en aras de una supuesta «integración» republicana francesa. Se han creado, en el uso popular de la lengua francesa, dos neologismos (beur y beurette) que, dada su dificultad de traducción, han sido exportados a otras lenguas como préstamos léxicos pero su correcta interpretación en las mismas deja mucho que desear. Hacia el final del artículo se presenta una reflexión crítica, a modo de conclusión, sobre los términos beur y beurette como «intraducibles» en el sentido apuntado por Barbara Cassin y se propone cómo poder resolver la aparente contradicción de traducir «lo intraducible» cuando quien traduce e interpreta sabe situarse «entre» lenguas y culturas, gracias a la noción de paratraducción.
