1. Recent results from the DESPEC campaign at GSI

Abstract

HISPEC-DESPEC is a collaboration, part of NUSTAR, aiming at studying the structure of nuclei produced by projectile fragmentation reactions exploiting the beams delivered by the accelerator system at present and future facilities GSI and FAIR. In the early stages of the experimental activity at FAIR Phase-0, started in 2020, the collaboration focused the attention on studies following the decay of long-living isomeric states and β-decays with lifetimes in the millisecond-to-second range. A description of the set-up and of first results obtained in the experimental campaigns covering years 2020-2022 are the subject of this talk.

Abstract

Isomeric states of the neutron-rich isotope 18973Ta116 were populated via fragmentation of a primary beam of 208Pb ions at 1 GeV/u impinging on a 9Be target at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The isotopes of interest were separated, identified and delivered to the DESPEC setup. Two isomers were deduced in 189Ta116 and their lifetimes were measured based on the γ-ray time distributions.

Abstract

In recent years, a number of both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed focusing on the zirconium isotopic chain. In particular, state-of-the-art Monte Carlo shell-model calculations predict shape coexistence in these isotopes. In this context, the 94Zr nucleus, which is believed to possess a nearly spherical ground state, is particularly interesting since the purported deformed structure is basedon the low-lying 02+ state, making it amenable for detailed study. In order to provide definitive conclusionson the shapes of the low-lying states, two complementary experiments to study 94Zr by means of low-energy Coulomb excitation were performed. This data will allow the quadrupole moments of the 21,2+ levels to be extracted as well as for the deformation parameters of the 01,2+ states to be determined and, thus, definitive conclusions to be drawn on the role of shape coexistence in this nucleus for the first time. The first experiment was performed at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory with the GALILEO-SPIDER setup, which, for the first time, was coupled with 6 lanthanum bromide scintillators (LaBr3:Ce) in order to maximize the γ-ray detection effciency. The second experiment was performed at the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) in Munich and used a Q3D magnetic spectrograph to detect the scattered 12C ions following Coulomb excitation of 94Zr targets.

Abstract

The multinucleon transfer reaction mechanism was employed to populate isotopes around the doubly-magic 208 Pb nucleus. We used an unstable 94 Rb beam on 208 Pb targets of different thickness. Transfer channels were studied via the fragment-γ and γ-γ coincidences, by using MINIBALL γ spectrometer coupled to a particle detector. Gamma transitions associated to the different Pb isotopes, populated by the neutron transfers, are discussed in terms of excitation energy and spin. Fragment angular distributions were extracted, andcompared with the reaction models.

Abstract

The γ-coincidence studies of low-spin structures of 210Bi and 206Tl are presented. The 210Bi nucleus, populated in thermal neutron capture reaction, was investigated using EXILL HPGe array at Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared to the shell-model calculations allowing to draw the conclusions on the nature of the low-spin excitations populated below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi (4.6 MeV). It has been found that some levels cannot be described by the valence proton and neutron couplings, but may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3- octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core. Moreover, preliminary results of a low-spin structure measurements of 206Tl by the γ-coincidence technique, making use of the 205Tl(n,γ)206Tl reaction at the FIPPS prompt γ-ray spectroscopy facility of ILL are shown. The population of a large number of excited states of 206Tl above the ground state up to the neutron binding energy (at 6.5 MeV), within a few units of spin is expected. The analysis involving double and triple γ-coincidences and γγ-angular correlations will allow to significantly extend the experimental information on the energy and spin-parity of the levels in 206Tl. This will help shedding light on the proton-hole and neutron-hole couplings near the doubly magic core 208Pb.

Abstract

In heavy ion reactions, in the case of N/Z asymmetry between projectile and target, the process leading to complete fusion is expected to produce pre-equilibrium dipole γ-ray emission. It is generated during the charge equilibration process and it is known as Dynamical Dipole. A new measurement of the dynamical dipole emission was performed by studying 16O + 116Sn at 12 MeV/u. These data, together with those measured at 8.1 MeV/u and 15.6 MeV/u for the same reaction, provide the dependence on the Dynamical Dipole total emission yield with beam energy and they can be compared with theoretical expectations. The experimental results show a weak increase of the Dynamical Dipole total yield with beam energies and are in agreement with the prediction of a theoretical model based on the Boltzmann–Nordheim–Vlasov (BNV) approach. The measured trend with beam energy does not confirm the rise and fall behavior previously reported for the same fused compound but with a much higher dipole moment.

Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions in stellar binary systems, and important sources of Al-26 and Na-22. While ? rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, Na-22 remains untraceable. Its half-life (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV ?-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of its nucleosynthesis. The Na-22(p, ?)Mg-23 reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of Na-22 ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in Mg-23. Here, we propose a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this method to the study of the Mg-23 states, places strong limits on the amount of Na-22 produced in novae and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories. The authors report a particle-particle correlation and velocity-difference profile method to measure nuclear lifetime. The results obtained for excited states of 23Mg are used to constrain the production of 22Na in the astrophysical novae explosions.

While γ rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, 22Na remains untraceable. Its half-life (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV γ-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of its nucleosynthesis. The 22Na(p, γ)23Mg reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of 22Na ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in 23Mg. Here, we propose a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this method to the study of the 23Mg states, places strong limits on the amount of 22Na produced in novae and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories. The authors report a particle-particle correlation and velocity-difference profile method to measure nuclear lifetime. Abstract

The ��-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus ������Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of �������U and �������Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between ��-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 ��s isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr���(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus ������Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

15. Contrasting properties of particle-particle and hole-hole excitations in Tl and Bi nuclei

Abstract

A complete-spectroscopy investigation of low-lying, low-spin states in the one-proton-hole and one-neutron-hole nucleus $^{206}$Tl has been performed by using thermal neutron capture and γ-coincidence technique with the FIPPS Ge array at ILL Grenoble. The new experimental results, together with data for the one-proton-particle and one-neutron-particle nucleus $^{210}$Bi (taken from a previous study done at ILL in the EXILL campaign), allowed for an extensive comparison with predictions of shell-model calculations performed with realistic interactions. No phenomenological adjustments were introduced in the calculations. In $^{210}$Bi, state energies, transition multipolarities and decay branchings agree well with theory for the three well separated multiplets of states which dominate the low-lying excitations. On the contrary, in $^{206}$Tl significant discrepancies are observed: in the same energy region, six multiplets were identified, with a significant mixing among them being predicted, as a consequence of the smaller energy separation between the active orbitals. The discrepancies in $^{206}$Tl are attributed to the larger uncertainties in the determination of the off-diagonal matrix elements of the realistic shell-model interaction with respect to the calculated diagonal matrix elements, the only ones playing a major role in the case of $^{210}$Bi. The work points to the need of more advanced approaches in the construction of the realistic interactions.

Abstract

The realisation of a remotely-controlled target-exchange system for the multi-detector array GALILEO has been proposed to the Mechanical Design and Machine Workshop Department of INFN Milano, with the following requirements: possibility of pre-loading 7-10 targets, including quartz and collimators for beam centering procedures; downstream location in front of the beam-dump, almost 3 m away from the scattering chamber; minimum material which can interact with the beam, and under vacuum working conditions, with pressures around 10−6 mbar. The system has been designed and built within the Mechanical Design and Machine Workshop Department of INFN-Milano and installed onto the GALILEO beam line at the LNL INFN laboratories in Legnaro.

Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 42Ca was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in 42Ca were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in 42Ca, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2+ 1 and 2+ 2 states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0+ 1,2 and 2+ 1,2 states, as well as triaxiality for 0+ 1,2 states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in 42Ca. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in 42Ca.

Abstract

In recent years, a number of both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed focusing on the zirconium isotopic chain. In particular, state-of-the-art Monte Carlo shell-model calculations predict shape coexistence in these isotopes. In this context, the 94Zr nucleus, which is believed to possess a nearly spherical ground state, is particularly interesting since the purported deformed structure is basedon the low-lying 02+ state, making it amenable for detailed study. In order to provide definitive conclusionson the shapes of the low-lying states, two complementary experiments to study 94Zr by means of low-energy Coulomb excitation were performed. This data will allow the quadrupole moments of the 21,2+ levels to be extracted as well as for the deformation parameters of the 01,2+ states to be determined and, thus, definitive conclusions to be drawn on the role of shape coexistence in this nucleus for the first time. The first experiment was performed at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory with the GALILEO-SPIDER setup, which, for the first time, was coupled with 6 lanthanum bromide scintillators (LaBr3:Ce) in order to maximize the γ-ray detection effciency. The second experiment was performed at the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) in Munich and used a Q3D magnetic spectrograph to detect the scattered 12C ions following Coulomb excitation of 94Zr targets. Abstract

The multinucleon transfer reaction mechanism was employed to populate isotopes around the doubly-magic 208 Pb nucleus. We used an unstable 94 Rb beam on 208 Pb targets of different thickness. Transfer channels were studied via the fragment-γ and γ-γ coincidences, by using MINIBALL γ spectrometer coupled to a particle detector. Gamma transitions associated to the different Pb isotopes, populated by the neutron transfers, are discussed in terms of excitation energy and spin. Abstract

The γ-coincidence studies of low-spin structures of 210Bi and 206Tl are presented. The 210Bi nucleus, populated in thermal neutron capture reaction, was investigated using EXILL HPGe array at Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared to the shell-model calculations allowing to draw the conclusions on the nature of the low-spin excitations populated below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi (4.6 MeV). It has been found that some levels cannot be described by the valence proton and neutron couplings, but may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3- octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core. Moreover, preliminary results of a low-spin structure measurements of 206Tl by the γ-coincidence technique, making use of the 205Tl(n,γ)206Tl reaction at the FIPPS prompt γ-ray spectroscopy facility of ILL are shown. The population of a large number of excited states of 206Tl above the ground state up to the neutron binding energy (at 6.5 MeV), within a few units of spin is expected. The analysis involving double and triple γ-coincidences and γγ-angular correlations will allow to significantly extend the experimental information on the energy and spin-parity of the levels in 206Tl. This will help shedding light on the proton-hole and neutron-hole couplings near the doubly magic core 208Pb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The neutron-rich nucleus Pt200 is investigated via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N=126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction Pt198(Se82, Se80)Pt200 is used to populate excited states of Pt200. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects γ rays coincident with the Se80 recoils, the binary partner of Pt200. The binary partner method is applied to extract the γ-ray transitions and build the level scheme of Pt200. The level at 1884 keV reported by Yates et al. [S. W. Yates, E. M. Baum, E. A. Henry, L. G. Mann, N. Roy, A. Aprahamian, R. A. Meyer, and R. Estep, Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889 (1988)] was confirmed to be at 1882.1 keV and assigned as the (61+) state. An additional γ ray was found and it presumably deexcites the (81+) state. 24. Probing particle-phonon-coupled states in the neutron-rich nucleus Cu 65 by lifetime measurements with fast-timing techniques

Abstract

The Cu65 nucleus was populated by the Ni64(Li7,?2n)Cu65 reaction and the lifetime of the 9/2+ state at 2.5 MeV was measured by electronic fast-timing technique, providing the value ?= 37(3) ps. The reduced transition probability B(E3)=8.82(165) W.u. is deduced and compared to theoretical predictions in the framework of a particle-vibration (weak) coupling model. The results indicate that the 9/2+ state is a member of the 3- - ?p3/2 multiplet, built by coupling the octupole 3- phonon of Ni64 to an unpaired proton in the p3/2 level, confirming the robustness of core excitations in the medium mass nucleus Ni64. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188-198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states. © 2014 American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

In this work, we present an exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate neutron-rich Sr, Y and Zr nuclei around mass A = 100 by cluster transfer reactions of radioactive 98Rb/98Sr beams on a 7Li target. Abstract

WOS: 000295765100014, The first implementation of the AGATA spectrometer consisting of five triple germanium detector clusters has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, INFN. This setup has two major goals, the first one is to validate the gamma-tracking concept and the second is to perform an experimental physics program using the stable beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex. A large variety of physics topics will be addressed during this campaign, aiming to investigate both neutron and proton-rich nuclei. The setup has been designed to be coupled with the large-acceptance magnetic-spectrometer PRISMA. Therefore, the in-beam prompt gamma rays detected with AGATA will be measured in coincidence with the products of multinucleon-transfer and deep-inelastic reactions measured by PRISMA. Moreover, the setup is versatile enough to host ancillary detectors, including the heavy-ion detector DANTE, the gamma-ray detector array HELENA, the Cologne plunger for lifetime measurements and the Si-pad telescope TRACE. In this paper the design; characteristics and performance figures of the setup will be described.

Abstract

WOS: 000314826000009, The response of AGATA segmented HPGe detectors to gamma rays in the energy range 2-15 MeV was measured. The 15.1 MeV gamma rays were produced using the reaction d(B-11,n gamma)C-12 at E-beam=19.1 MeV, while gamma rays between 2 and 9 MeV were produced using an Am-Be-Fe radioactive source. The energy resolution and linearity were studied and the energy-to-pulse-height conversion resulted to be linear within 0.05%.Experimental interaction multiplicity distributions are discussed and compared with the results of Geant4 simulations. It is shown that the application of gamma-ray tracking allows a suppression of background radiation caused by n-capture in Ge nuclei. Finally the Doppler correction for the 15.1 MeV gamma line, performed using the position information extracted with Pulse-shape analysis is discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract

WOS: 000310091000001, The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. Abstract

178th Course of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi on From the Big Bang to the Nucleosynthesis -- JUL 19-24, 2010 -- Varenna, ITALY, WOS: 000350800900023, The transition between order and chaos is studied in the warm rotating nucleus W-174 by gamma-spectroscopy, focusing on the conservation of selection rules of the K quantum number with the excitation energy. The W-174 nucleus was populated at high spins by the fusion-evaporation reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 backed target. The experiment was performed in Legnaro National Laboratory using the AGATA Demonstrator HPGe-array (AD) coupled with an array of 27 BaF2 scintillator detectors. High-energy gamma-rays measured in the AD and in the scintillators array will be also analyzed to study the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) in the compound nucleus W-178. The discrimination between n and gamma in the AD detectors will be employed, following a procedure recently developed by Monte Carlo simulations and using digital Pulse Shape Analysis timing techniques., Ist Nazl Fisica Nucleare, INFN CNAF
