Tot i que el càncer ossi pediàtric és relativament poc freqüent, va ser la tercera causa de mort infantil el 2020. En aquest context, destaquen dues formes prevalents: l'osteosarcoma i el sarcoma d'Ewing, afectant els teixits ossis dels infants. La seva importància es manifesta en la determinació del pronòstic i l'eficàcia del seu tractament, que depenen de factors clau com el tipus de càncer, la ubicació del tumor i l'edat del pacient. És, per tant, essencial comprendre la necessitat d’un diagnòstic precoç. Dins d'aquest marc, és fonamental subratllar la importància de les tècniques d’imatge, amb un èmfasi especial en el paper de la ressonància magnètica (RM). No obstant això, les imatges d'aquests càncers poden generar confusió amb les de tumors benignes, ja que presenten certa similitud. Per abordar aquesta problemàtica, l’objectiu del projecte és realitzar una revisió literària dels algoritmes de segmentació i classificació de tumors ossis pediàtrics desenvolupats recentment. Aquesta revisió busca implementar un dels algoritmes com a eina d'ajuda per l'equip de diagnòstic d'imatge de l’Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. Malgrat l'escassetat d'algoritmes específics per a tumors ossis, s'han implementat dues solucions alternatives: una per a la segmentació de pòlips en imatges de colonoscòpia i una altra per a la classificació de lesions cutànies. Amb una precisió del 93,19% i 91,96%, respectivament, aquests algoritmes, inicialment concebuts per altres àrees, poden ser adaptats i aplicats posteriorment al càncer d'ossos simplement canviant la base de dades utilitzada., Aunque el cáncer óseo pediátrico es relativamente poco frecuente, fue la tercera causa de muerte infantil en 2020. Despite the scarcity of specific algorithms for bone tumors, two alternative solutions have been implemented: one for the segmentation of polyps in colonoscopy images and another for the classification of skin lesions. With an accuracy of 93.19% and 91.96%, respectively, these algorithms, initially designed for other areas, can be adapted and applied to bone cancer by simply changing the used database.

Microtubule and actin filaments are both filaments pertaining to the cell’s cytoskeleton which have aroused great interest not only due to their structural properties, but also because of their intracellular electric signaling. During the past recent years there has been several studies aiming to unveil these structures’ characteristics, providing experimental data on their electrodynamic properties. The purpose of this work is to start developing a mathematical electrical model to simulate the experiments, giving a new tool that could be used to speed up the research process and save experimentation time. Another objective of this work was to test if the theoretical electrical MT values calculated on a previous study could be right (or close) or not. The model was designed using the experimental data from a main reference work and another sub reference work. In these they used the results and previous studies of the ionic waves along MTs to define them in electric circuit format. The geometry of the MTs network lattice was decided after consulting some R-C network works. Several designs for the model that are not shown in the paper were created until reaching the current satisfactory one, more testing on the model should be done before reaching any advanced conclusions. The current design consists of a perfectly square lattice where every element represents and individual MT of the network in parallel with a resistor element that acts as the buffer solution. The results obtained with the simulations were very promising, showing a good resemblance with the reference experiments and following the same frequency dependent trend. Even though this suggests that the model could be used as an experimental substitute, it would be advised to get more samples. This report shows the design, implementation and evaluation of an IoT (Internet of Things) based environmental monitoring system. The main idea of the work is to be able to monitor and control different physical properties through a web page. The system uses an Arduino Mega board to collect data from multiple environmental sensors, including MQ-2, MQ-135, DHT11, KY-037 and BMP180, to measure air quality, temperature, humidity, sound and atmospheric pressure among others. The collected data is processed and sent to the ESP8266 Node MCU, which transmits it to a web platform for visualisation. To do this, an IoT network architecture has been implemented, where the Arduino Mega collects data from the sensors and the ESP8266 Node MCU is responsible for communication with the server. The communication between the devices is carried out through serial communication. A web interface has been developed using HTML, CSS and JavaScript combined with XAMPP to display the data collected in real time and at a historical level. Experimental results show that the system is able to collect and transmit data effectively, providing environmental monitoring thanks to an intuitive interface that allows users to access historical data according to the selected day. This ability to access historical data provides a detailed view of environmental conditions in the past, facilitating comparative analysis and tracking of patterns over time. In addition, challenges encountered during implementation are discussed and possible improvements for future research are proposed. En els últims temps, les emissions de gasos d'efecte d'hivernacle, emanades de la indústria, han accentuat el fenomen de l'escalfament global, específicament generades per les emissions de diòxid de carboni. Per a reduir l'impacte negatiu i mantenir la temperatura global per sota dels 2 °C a més d'impedir que se superi el llindar en 450 ppm de diòxid de carboni en l'atmosfera, es requereix una acció concertada a escala global. La transició cap a la generació d'energies renovables, així com el desenvolupament de tecnologies innovadores destinades a capturar diòxid de carboni són essencials per a aconseguir un futur més sostenible. En aquest context, la tecnologia de Bioenergia amb Captura i Segrest de Carboni es perfila com una solució tecnològica amb un elevat potencial. La tecnologia BECCS se centra en l'ús de biomassa per a la generació d'energia renovable, al mateix temps que possibilita la captura de les emissions de diòxid de carboni. En implementar la tecnologia de postcombustió, permet aspirar a un escenari d'emissions netes zero de diòxid de carboni, contribuint de manera significativa a la reducció de l'impacte climàtic. El projecte de fi de màster tenia per objectiu investigar el rendiment d'una torre d'absorció (esprai tower) sense unitat de regeneració per a la captura de diòxid de carboni. The problem of naval ship resistance prediction is a critical issue in naval architecture and ship design. It involves estimating the amount of resistance a ship will encounter as it moves through the water under various conditions. This prediction is crucial because it allows ship designers and engineers to determine the power requirements, fuel efficiency, and other characteristics. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the most reliedupon prediction technique in hull-form design and analysis for new vessels. It is used to perform fluid flow analyses to help designers extract the highest possible performance in nearly every functional aspect of a naval vessel, including ship resistance. Modern CFD methods are certainly capable of delivering highly accurate results in this domain, but they are fundamentally based on numerical methods that solve the relative equations of mass, energy, and momentum conservation resulting in CPU-intensive mathematical procedures and this hinders their convenient use and integration within the conventional ship design loop. Machine Learning (ML) is rapidly becoming a core technology for scientific computing and its use in CFD is a wide research topic. In this work, we propose data-driven surrogate models, based on stateof-the-art ML algorithms, to speed up the exploration of several hull forms at an early design stage. Results showed that the employed approaches can be a valuable and more efficient solution for the initial qualitative analysis of several hull shapes in order to find the most efficient one for every scope of use., El problema de la predicci´o de la resist`encia dels vaixells ´es un tema cr´ıtic en l’arquitectura naval i el disseny de vaixells. In Nanomechanical and Micromechanical systems, a mechanical resonator is a continuous mechanical structure oscillating at specific resonant frequencies. These resonant frequencies are particularly advantageous when characterizing elements with low resting potential values, as the resonance frequency amplifies these values considerably. The piezoelectric effect has significantly garnered attention within the purview of nanomechanical phenomena. This phenomenon has been effectively utilized, studied, and characterized over numerous years, and it presently serves as foundational technology for Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems. Concurrently, a less explored effect, termed flexoelectric, it could potentially exhibit comparable performance to the piezoelectric effect but at smaller scales, which could make it potentially ideal for sensor applications. The overarching objective of this thesis is to develop a PCB comprising the chip with the flexoelectric devices and the amplifiers. These amplifiers will be trans impedance amplifiers designed to convert current to voltage using a feedback resistor. The challenge lies in devising a low-noise design to prevent current loss. This thesis will unfold in four main phases. Firstly, the circuit will be simulated using LTSpice to estimate the most accurate output and ascertain the expected performance of the amplifiers. Following this, we will proceed with the PCB design, applying all possible techniques to minimize noise and creating a four-layer board using the Altium software. The assembly phase will be facilitated with the support of ACI. Finally, we will characterize the design and attempt to be the first to characterize flexoelectric materials. Background: A loss-of-function cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2) mutation, I4855M+/–, has recently been linked to a new cardiac disorder termed RyR2 Ca2+ release deficiency syndrome (CRDS) as well as left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC). The mechanism by which RyR2 loss-of-function causes CRDS has been extensively studied, but the mechanism underlying RyR2 loss-of-function-associated LVNC is unknown. Here, we determined the impact of a CRDS-LVNC-associated RyR2-I4855M+/– loss-of-function mutation on cardiac structure and function. Methods: We generated a mouse model expressing the CRDS-LVNC-associated RyR2-I4855M+/– mutation. Histological analysis, echocardiography, ECG recording, and intact heart Ca2+ imaging were performed to characterize the structural and functional consequences of the RyR2-I4855M+/– mutation. Results: As in humans, RyR2-I4855M+/– mice displayed LVNC characterized by cardiac hypertrabeculation and noncompaction. RyR2-I4855M+/– mice were highly susceptible to electrical stimulation–induced ventricular arrhythmias but protected from stress-induced ventricular arrhythmias. Unexpectedly, the RyR2-I4855M+/– mutation increased the peak Ca2+ transient but did not alter the L-type Ca2+ current, suggesting an increase in Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release gain. The RyR2-I4855M+/– mutation abolished sarcoplasmic reticulum store overload–induced Ca2+ release or Ca2+ leak, elevated sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ load, prolonged Ca2+ transient decay, and elevated end-diastolic Ca2+ level upon rapid pacing. Immunoblotting revealed increased level of phosphorylated CaMKII (Ca2+-calmodulin dependent protein kinases II) but unchanged levels of CaMKII, calcineurin, and other Ca2+ handling proteins in the RyR2-I4855M+/– mutant compared with wild type. Conclusions: The RyR2-I4855M+/– mutant mice represent the first RyR2-associated LVNC animal model that recapitulates the CRDS-LVNC overlapping phenotype in humans. Medical image classification is critical, where reliability and transparency are crucial for the safe and accurate diagnosis of diseases. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) are widely used in medical image classification due to their high performance. However, they are often considered black-boxes because they offer little insight into decision-making. Therefore, improving the interpretability of DCNNs is crucial for their adoption in medical diagnoses. This paper proposes a novel three-tier self-interpretable DCNN (TS-CNN) architecture for multi-region medical image classification, which improves classification performance while being inherently interpretable. The proposed TS-CNN architecture is well-suited for medical images with multiple regions, such as images with scattered and randomly shaped lesions. The proposed architecture has three branches: a global branch that learns the relevant patterns from the raw input image; an attention branch that selects the important regions and discards the irrelevant parts for the local branch to learn; and a fusion branch that distills knowledge from both the global and local branches for classification. The proposed architecture is flexible in terms of the backbone CNNs used for classification and post-hoc interpretability methods used for attention capture. We demonstrate the flexibility and generalization of the architecture through a series of experiments involving multiple state-of-the-art CNN architectures such as DenseNet-121, Inception, Xception, and ResNet-50 as the global/local branches, each paired with GradCAM and Saliency maps as attention modules. The proposed architecture outperformed the backbone model in classification tasks on two datasets: a custom-made blob dataset and a publicly available skin lesion PAD-UFES-20 dataset, demonstrating its potential for improving accuracy in medical image classification tasks., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

(English) This thesis aims to explore cardiac cell physiology across various scales, also known as translational cardiology. The research employs novel computational techniques from Biomedical engineering and utilizes medical signal and image databases to investigate the root causes of cardiac contractile system dysfunctions. The study proposes new biomarkers and measures that could aid in diagnosing, prognosticating, and treating cardiac diseases. Besides chapter 1, devoted to the introduction and description of the structure of the thesis, it consists of three main chapters, each of which deals with different stages of cardiac physiology: Chapter 2, focuses on the analysis of currents circulating in ion channels in human atrial cardiomyocytes (HAM), on an intracellular scale. The aim of this chapter is to develop a computational platform for transmembrane ionic currents. This platform allows us to process and extract the kinetic and morphological characteristics of each signal peak that have allowed us to automatically differentiate between healthy and pathological regimes. In conditions where the cardiac cell is stimulated with a time-varying voltage, beat-to-beat electrical alternation phenomena appear, which are indicative of arrhythmogenesis. Based on the characteristics extracted and validated with a synthetic model, a new biomarker has been designed, called the "alternation index", which allows a satisfactory quantification of the degree of alternation between electrical beats. Chapter 3, focuses into the mechanical analysis of single mouse ventricular cardiomyocytes (MVM) at a cellular level, using optical and calcium imaging recordings. The chapter aims to develop a computational video platform using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) algorithm. This platform calculates displacement fields, strain fields, and sarcolemma length variations during contraction in an isolated cardiomyocyte. Les malformacions arteriovenoses cerebrals (MAV) representen la principal etiologia de l'hemorràgia intracranial pediàtrica. Diversos estudis assenyalen com a convenient l'ús de tècniques d'imatge no invasives per monitoritzar l'efecte del tractament de les MAV cerebrals, com ara la tècnica Arteria Spin- Labeling (ASL), ja que una correcta obliteració pot donar-se fins a dos anys després de el tractament, requerint un seguiment posterior. A més, l'avanç de la tecnologia ha contribuït a l'aplicació de la intel·ligència artificial (IA) en diferents àmbits, com és el cas de la imatge medica, oferint grans oportunitats de progrés i innovació per la seva capacitat per resoldre problemes cognitius que normalment requereixen intel·ligència humana. Els models poden ser entrenats i validats juntament amb professionals del sector de salut, de manera que aquests puguin ser integrats al seu procés de treball i servir com a ajuda. Un requisit indispensable perquè això passi és poder proporcionar una explicació a les decisions preses per una xarxa neuronal. Per això, les tècniques d'explicabilitat permeten als humans comprendre i confiar en la sortida generada per un algorisme. A partir d'una base de dades d'imatges d'ASL de pacients pediàtrics proporcionada per l'Hospital Sant Joan de Déu a Barcelona, aquest projecte es desenvolupa en col·laboració amb aquest hospital, amb l'objectiu de desenvolupar un model de Deep Learning (DL) explicable que permeti detectar la presència de MAV a ASL. En primer lloc, es defineixen diversos models i s'entrenen amb aquestes dades. Posteriorment, s'apliquen el mètode Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (GradCAM) com a tècnica d'explicabilitat, i s'escull el millor model tenint en compte els resultats de diferents mètriques i les explicacions que generen sobre les seves decisions. Therefore, explainability techniques allow human users to understand and trust the output generated by an algorithm. Using a database of ASL images of paediatric patients provided by the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, this project is developed in collaboration with this hospital, with the aim of developing an explainable Deep Learning (DL) model to detect the presence of AVMs in ASL. First, several models are defined and trained with these data. Al llarg de cinc mesos, el nostre grup de cinc estudiants va rebre l'encàrrec de crear un nou espai pels estudiants d'art, teatre i disseny de la Universitat Metropolitana d'Oslo. Immediatament es va observar de que no hi havia cap habitació, pis o fins i tot edifici designats per a utilitzar com a base pel nostre disseny. Per tant, es va optar per crear un espai conceptual que representés una zona d'estudi que podria ser utilitzada i adaptada dins els plans d'una futura remodelació però sense les limitacions dels codis d'edificació i un pressupost. Això es va realizar per a proporcionar idees a la universitat, de les quals se'n podria utilitzar qualsevol ítem, des d'un sol moble fins el disseny complet de l'habitació, quan l'edifici es renovi durant l'estiu de 2024. Els estudiants van ser els principals subjectes d'estudi del disseny conceptual. Tanmateix, cap membre del grup tenia experiència significativa amb les necessitats dels estudiants d'art, teatre o disseny. Les entrevistes i les investigacions ens van anar ajudant a concretar idees sobre el que un espai pot oferir a aquestes estudiants. Quan finalment es va crear el concepte, vam tornar a preguntar als alumnes per demanar les seves respectives opinions. Els alumnes van quedar sorpresos positivament de com s'incorporaven les seves necessitats i desitjos dins l'espai dissenyat i van repartir elogis i suggeriments addicionals quan calia. A partir dels comentaris dels estudiants, creiem que els nostres conceptes són prometedors i referents de disseny per al nou espai del Departament d'Art, Drama i Disseny d'OsloMet., Durante cinco meses, nuestro grupo de cinco estudiantes recibió el encargo de crear un nuevo espacio dirigido a los estudiantes de arte, teatro y diseño de la Universidad Metropolitana de Oslo. Basándonos en las opiniones de los estudiantes, creemos que nuestros conceptos son prometedores como referencia de diseño para el nuevo espacio del Departamento de Arte, Teatro y Diseño de OsloMet, Over the course of five months, our group of five students was given the task of creating a new space for art, drama, and design students at Oslo Metropolitan University. Immediately it was disclosed that there was no designated room, floor, or even building that we might use as a base for our design. Therefore, the choice was made to create a concept space that represents a study area that could be plans for a remodel but without the limitations of building codes and a budget. This was done to provide ideas to the school, of which anything from a single piece of furniture to the whole room design could be utilized when the building is renovated over the summer of 2024. Students were the foremost target users of the concept design. However, no group member had significant experience with art, drama, or design students. Interviews and research slowly uncovered ideas for what a space can provide for these students. When the concept was finally created, we went back to the students and asked for their feedback. The students were positively surprised by how their needs and wishes were incorporated into the space and gave praise and further suggestions where necessary. Aims Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with altered expression of the transcription factor Pitx2c and a high incidence of calcium release-induced afterdepolarizations. However, the relationship between Pitx2c expression and defective calcium homeostasis remains unclear and we here aimed to determine how Pitx2c expression affects calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and its impact on electrical activity in isolated atrial myocytes. Methods To address this issue, we applied confocal calcium imaging and patch-clamp techniques to atrial myocytes isolated from a mouse model with conditional atrial-specific deletion of Pitx2c. Results Our findings demonstrate that heterozygous deletion of Pitx2c doubles the calcium spark frequency, increases the frequency of sparks/site 1.5-fold, the calcium spark decay constant from 36 to 42 ms and the wave frequency from none to 3.2 min-1. Additionally, the cell capacitance increased by 30% and both the SR calcium load and the transient inward current (ITI) frequency were doubled. Furthermore, the fraction of cells with spontaneous action potentials increased from none to 44%. These effects of Pitx2c deficiency were comparable in right and left atrial myocytes, and homozygous deletion of Pitx2c did not induce any further effects on sparks, SR calcium load, ITI frequency or spontaneous action potentials. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that heterozygous Pitx2c deletion induces defects in calcium homeostasis and electrical activity that mimic derangements observed in right atrial myocytes from patients with AF and suggest that Pitx2c deficiency confers cellular electrophysiological hallmarks of AF to isolated atrial myocytes., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

According to data, breast cancer is a significant health issue and has a considerable economic impact. This clearly justifies the need for breast cancer screening. However, the current diagnostic process used in clinical settings is prone to errors. Consequently, there is a requirement for a tool that can help doctors categorize mammograms into the four BI-RADS categories. This study presents an approach that uses deep learning. It examines the challenges and difficulties encountered and evaluates and compares its effectiveness. One dataset of mammograms was used, with experts having already classified the radiological images using the BI-RADS guidelines. The images in these datasets belong to categories 1 to 4. The deep learning approach employed in this study is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), namely a ResNet22. The propose is to use two inputs, one for the Cranio-Caudal (CC) view and another for the Medio-Lateral Oblique (MLO) view. Each input comprises a mammogram image and two heatmaps. Consequently, we have named the architecture MammoHeatNet (MHN). The algorithm initially processes the mammogram image by cropping it, extracting optimal centers, and obtaining the heatmaps. Once the pre-processing is complete, the inputs are fed into the model, which then classifies them into four BI-RADS categories. To obtain the best model, various parameter configurations have been tested. The ultimate model attained a maximum accuracy of 74.19%. The process of training and testing the model was time-intensive, requiring 150 hours to obtain the best possible model. In conclusion, the deep learning model used in this study achieve good performance. However, with the incorporation of a larger dataset for train it and various modifications to the model, even better results could be achieved. Per tal d’avaluar l’efectivitat del tractament de les MAVs cerebrals, diverses tècniques d’imatge mèdica no invasives han sigut proposades, incloent seqüències com la la pseudo-continuous Spin Labelling (ASL). L’obliteració total de una MAV tarda habitualment un període de dos anys, pel que és necessari un seguiment del o la pacient, sent així d’alta importància que les tècniques d’imatge siguin el menys invasives possible, requerint per tant, que siguin estudiades les alternatives no invasives. Microphysiological systems (MPSs), also known as 'Organ-On-a-Chip' (OCC), have revolutionized the way of understanding biology. These systems, which include three-dimensional co-culture and microfluidic technology, aim to mimic human physiology with in-vitro culture systems. Their purpose is to increase the knowledge of biological processes, as well as to provide an effective diagnostic tool for the analysis of different drugs. Standardization of MPSs implies the robustness and reproducibility of these devices and is desirable for their industrialization, production and regularization. However, due to the early stage of academic and commercial development of this technology, no standardization procedure exists in the literature to date. Therefore, experts recommend focusing on the characterization or qualification of these devices. This characterization and qualification of microphysiological systems involves testing the different elements that make up the device to ensure that their configuration mimics the physiology of the human structures represented, behaving and providing values as similar as possible to those of the tissues in vivo. It is in this context that this thesis attempts to develop a characterization protocol applicable to any 'Organ-On-a-Chip' system based on the tests carried out and compiled in the literature of devices in the experimental or commercialization phase. Specifically, a characterization and qualification procedure is presented in which the membrane permeability is monitored in real time depending on device elements such as the presence or not of cell culture, the application or not of microfluids, among others. Analysis of the spatio-temporal distribution of calcium sparks showed a preferential increase in sparks near the sarcolemma in atrial myocytes from patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), linked to higher ryanodine receptor (RyR2) phosphorylation at s2808 and lower calsequestrin-2 levels. Mathematical modeling, incorporating modulation of RyR2 gating, showed that only the observed combinations of RyR2 phosphorylation and calsequestrin-2 levels can account for the spatio-temporal distribution of sparks in patients with and without AF. La tesi proposa l'ús de dos algoritmes d'optimització per simular la implementació d'un sistema Vehicle-to-Grid per proporcionar serveis de reducció de pics a un edifici d'oficines. El primer algoritme busca generar una demanda de referència diària optimitzada per reduir els pics de demanda d'electricitat al cost més baix possible. El segon algoritme utilitza aquesta demanda de referència per determinar la potència òptima que cada vehicle elèctric ha d'injectar o emmagatzemar en diferents intervals de temps. Aquests algoritmes s'han simulat per a tots els dies de l'any per avaluar l'eficàcia del sistema Vehicle-to-Grid i els algoritmes en diferents estacions. S'han calculat els estalvis econòmics aconseguits i s'ha avaluat la degradació de les bateries basant-se en investigacions prèvies en escenaris similars de Vehicle-to-Grid. Els resultats indiquen reduccions significatives en els pics de demanda, especialment en els mesos propers a l'hivern, principalment a causa de la menor producció fotovoltaica durant aquests mesos. Com a resultat, els pics de demanda tendeixen a concentrar-se més al voltant del migdia, augmentant la probabilitat que hi hagi vehicles elèctrics connectats a l'aparcament per proporcionar serveis de reducció de pics. En conseqüència, els algoritmes han possibilitat una reducció mitjana mensual de 25,4 kW en els pics, amb uns estalvis de capacitat d'aproximadament 674 € i un cost energètic anual addicional de només 6,6 €. Aquests estalvis de costos s'aconsegueixen mitjançant la modificació de la demanda neta, tenint en compte no només la tarifa de capacitat sinó també el cost energètic, optimitzant així l'estructura de cost global. The primary objective of the first algorithm is to generate an optimized daily reference demand that aims to reduce electricity demand peaks at the lowest possible cost, thereby minimizing both electricity and capacity costs. Subsequently, the second algorithm utilizes the generated reference demand to determine the optimal power that each electric vehicle should inject or store at different time intervals throughout the day. These two algorithms have been coupled and simulated for all days of the year to evaluate the effectiveness of the Vehicle-to-Grid system and the algorithms across different seasons. Additionally, the study has calculated the achieved economic savings and evaluated the associated battery degradation based on research papers that have investigated battery degradation in similar Vehicle-to-Grid scenarios. The findings indicate significant reductions in demand peaks, particularly in the months near winter, primarily due to lower photovoltaic production during these months. As a result, demand peaks tend to be more concentrated around midday, increasing the likelihood of having electric vehicles connected to the parking facility to provide peak shaving services. Consequently, the algorithms have enabled an average monthly peak reduction of 25.4 kW, resulting in capacity savings of approximately 674 € and an additional annual energy cost of only 6.6 €. These cost savings are achieved by modifying the net demand, taking into account not only the capacity tariff but also the energy tariff, thereby optimizing the overall cost structure. Nowadays, 1-2% of people over 60 years old are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurological progressive disease that affects mobility and cognition function. The cause is still unknown but is related to the lack of dopaminergic neurons responsible for producing dopamine. The most common treatment is to supply drugs such as levodopa. However, it comes with many drawbacks: side effects, multiple doses per day, and only the reduction of motor symptoms. For this reason, electrospinning and drug delivery systems are currently being developed in the research field as an alternative. The thesis aimed to produce uniaxial and coaxial nanofibers that contained a novel polymer called PGOS 40% through electrospinning as well as to study the kinetics of dopamine loaded in PCL 13% uniaxial nanofibers and PGS 80% / PCL 13% coaxial nanofibers with a core-shell distribution. The resulting uniaxial and coaxial nanofibers containing PGOS 40% presented an irregular morphology with beads and a bad encapsulation of the core layer. In future work it must be optimized to obtain a uniform structure. In addition, the nanofibers used to perform the release assay did not have a proper dopamine distribution. Thereby, they released more dopamine than expected. However, it has been verified that coaxial nanofibers are proper for controlled drug delivery systems (DDS). In summary, this thesis project describes the first steps to achieve a coaxial nanofiber capable of releasing small doses of dopamine over time in a neural tissue. Este artículo presenta el desarrollo de un sistema de imágenes espectrales compacto, de bajo coste y sencillo con una amplia aplicabilidad. El sistema emplea la multiplexación de luz a través de un panel de diodos emisores de luz (LED), que incluye ocho longitudes de onda que cubren el rango del espectro ultravioleta (UV) al infrarrojo cercano (NIR). Como sensor de imagen se utiliza una microcámara RGB-IR controlada por una placa Raspberry Pi. Se ha programado un algoritmo básico de procesamiento de imágenes para facilitar la visualización de la reflectancia y la información del histograma en cada longitud de onda, incluidos los UV y los NIR, en una pantalla integrada. El sistema prototipo se ha sometido a pruebas en diversos experimentos y a un ensayo de aplicación para la detección de frescura. The system employs light multiplexing through a light-emitting diode (LED) panel, which includes eight wavelengths covering the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) spectrum range. An RGB-IR micro-camera controlled by a Raspberry Pi board is utilized as the image sensor. A basic image processing algorithm has been programmed to facilitate the visualization of reflectance and histogram information at each wavelength, including UV and NIRs, on an integrated display. Background: PKA (protein kinase A)–mediated phosphorylation of cardiac RyR2 (ryanodine receptor 2) has been extensively studied for decades, but the physiological significance of PKA phosphorylation of RyR2 remains poorly understood. Recent determination of high-resolution 3-dimensional structure of RyR2 in complex with CaM (calmodulin) reveals that the major PKA phosphorylation site in RyR2, serine-2030 (S2030), is located within a structural pathway of CaM-dependent inactivation of RyR2. This novel structural insight points to a possible role of PKA phosphorylation of RyR2 in CaM-dependent inactivation of RyR2, which underlies the termination of Ca2+ release and induction of cardiac Ca2+ alternans. Methods: We performed single-cell endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ imaging to assess the impact of S2030 mutations on Ca2+ release termination in human embryonic kidney 293 cells. Here we determined the role of the PKA site RyR2-S2030 in a physiological setting, we generated a novel mouse model harboring the S2030L mutation and carried out confocal Ca2+ imaging. Results: We found that mutations, S2030D, S2030G, S2030L, S2030V, and S2030W reduced the endoplasmic reticulum luminal Ca2+ level at which Ca2+ release terminates (the termination threshold), whereas S2030P and S2030R increased the termination threshold. S2030A and S2030T had no significant impact on release termination. Furthermore, CaM–wild-type increased, whereas Ca2+ binding deficient CaM mutant (CaM-M [a loss-of-function CaM mutation with all 4 EF-hand motifs mutated]), PKA, and Ca2+/CaMKII (CaM-dependent protein kinase II) reduced the termination threshold. The S2030L mutation abolished the actions of CaM–wild-type, CaM-M, and PKA, but not CaMKII, in Ca2+ release termination. Moreover, we showed that isoproterenol and CaM-M suppressed pacing-induced Ca2+ alternans and accelerated Ca2+ transient recovery in intact working hearts, whereas CaM–wild-type exerted an opposite effect. L’infart de miocardi és una greu patologia cardíaca caracteritzada per la falta de subministrament sanguini a una part del múscul cardíac, que provoca danys permanents al cor. Encara que el nombre de morts anuals a causa d’aquesta malaltia és molt elevat, s’ha observat una reducció en les últimes dècades gràcies a millores en la seva detecció. Actualment, els pacients són sotmesos a exàmens histològics i anàlisis de sang per al diagnòstic. Ocasionalment, és necessari l’ajuda d’imatges de ressonància magnètica per a l’avaluació de l’anatomia del teixit del múscul cardíac. No obstant això, de vegades hi ha discordança entre les dades clíniques, els resultats dels exàmens i les imatges, fet que pot dificultar el diagnòstic. En aquest context, l’ús de models d’intel·ligència artificial s’ha convertit en una eina important que facilita aquest procés laboriós i proporciona resultats més ràpids i precisos. Per això, en aquest projecte es planteja l’estudi de diferents mètodes aplicats a una base de dades pública del repte EMIDEC i la implementació d’un codi propi per trobar els models que ofereixin els millors resultats possibles en el diagnòstic d’infart de miocardi, sense necessitat d’utilitzar un programari complex. El codi de classificació proposat està desenvolupat en Python i es troba disponible a través de la plataforma GitHub. Aquest codi fa ús d’una xarxa neuronal convolucional (CNN) per a l’anàlisi de les imatges cardíaques i la classificació dels casos dels pacients que han patit o no infart de miocardi. Aunque el número de muertes anuales debidas a esta enfermedad es muy elevado, se ha observado una reducción en las últimas décadas gracias a su detección. Actualmente, los pacientes son sometidos a exámenes histológicos y análisis de sangre para el diagnóstico. Ocasionalmente, es necesaria la ayuda de imágenes de resonancia magnética para la evaluación de la anatomía del tejido del músculo cardíaco. No obstante, de vez en cuando hay discordancia entre los datos clínicos, los resultados de los exámenes y las imágenes, lo que puede dificultar el diagnóstico. En este contexto, el uso de modelos de inteligencia artificial se ha convertido en una herramienta importante que facilita este proceso laborioso y proporciona resultados más rápidos y precisos. Por ello, en este proyecto se plantea el estudio de diferentes métodos aplicados a una base de datos pública del reto EMIDEC y la implementación de un código propio para encontrar los modelos que ofrezcan los mejores resultados posibles en el diagnóstico de infarto de miocardio, sin necesidad de utilizar un programa complejo. Se ha logrado una puntuación F1 del 94,19% y una exactitud del 92,86%, resultados que indican un buen rendimiento del modelo de clasificación., Myocardial infarction is a severe cardiac condition characterized by insufficient blood supply to a part of the heart muscle, resulting in permanent damage. Despite the high number of annual deaths attributed to this disease, advancements in detection have led to a decline in mortality rates over the past decades. Currently, diagnosis of myocardial infarction involves histological examinations and blood tests. In some cases, magnetic resonance imaging is employed to assess the cardiac muscle tissue. However, discrepancies between clinical data, test results and imaging can complicate accurate diagnosis. To address this challenge, the integration of artificial intelligence models has become a valuable tool that facilitates this work process and provides faster and more precise outcomes. Therefore, this project aims to explore various methodologies applied to the public EMIDEC challenge database and the implementation of a customized code to find the models that yield optimal results for diagnosing myocardial infarction, without relying on complex software. The classification code provided is implemented in Python and can be accessed on the GitHub platform. This code uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to analyze cardiac images and classify patient cases on whether they have experienced myocardial infarction or not. The model achieved an F1-score of 94.19% and an accuracy of 92.86%, indicating its excellent performance in accurately classifying cases.

The third trimester of pregnancy is the most critical period for human brain development, during which significant changes occur in the morphology of the brain. The development of sulci and gyri allows for a considerable increase in the brain surface. In preterm newborns, these changes occur in an extrauterine environment that may cause a disruption of the normal brain maturation process. We hypothesize that a normalized atlas of brain maturation with cerebral ultrasound images from birth to term equivalent age will help clinicians assess these changes. This work proposes a semi-automatic Graphical User Interface (GUI) platform for segmenting the main cerebral sulci in the clinical setting from ultrasound images. This platform has been obtained from images of a cerebral ultrasound neonatal database images provided by two clinical researchers from the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, Spain. The primary objective is to provide a user-friendly design platform for clinicians for running and visualizing an atlas of images validated by medical experts. This GUI offers different segmentation approaches and pre-processing tools and is user-friendly and designed for running, visualizing images, and segmenting the principal sulci. Existing explainability approaches for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are mainly applied after training (post-hoc) which is generally unreliable. Ante-hoc explainers trained simultaneously with the CNN are more reliable. However, current ante-hoc explanation methods mainly generate inexplicit concept-based explanations tailored to specific tasks. To address these limitations, we propose a task-agnostic ante-hoc framework that can generate interpretation maps to visually explain any CNN. Our framework simultaneously trains the CNN and a weighting network - an explanation generation module. The generated maps are self-explanatory, eliminating the need for manual identification of concepts. We demonstrate that our method can interpret tasks such as classification, facial landmark detection, and image captioning. We show that our framework is explicit, faithful, and stable through experiments. Aims Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with excessive spontaneous calcium release, linked to cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent phosphorylation of calcium regulatory proteins. Because ß-blockers are expected to attenuate cAMP-dependent signaling, we aimed to examine whether the treatment of patients with ß-blockers affected the incidence of spontaneous calcium release events or transient inward currents (ITI). Methods The impact of treatment with commonly used ß-blockers was analyzed in human atrial myocytes from 371 patients using patch-clamp technique, confocal calcium imaging or immunofluorescent labeling. Data were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis taking into account potentially confounding effects of relevant clinical factors Results The L-type calcium current (ICa) density was diminished significantly in patients with chronic but not paroxysmal AF and the treatment of patients with ß-blockers did not affect ICa density in any group. By contrast, the ITI frequency was elevated in patients with either paroxysmal or chronic AF that did not receive treatment, and ß-blocker treatment reduced the frequency to levels observed in patients without AF. Confocal calcium imaging showed that ß-blocker treatment also reduced the calcium spark frequency in patients with AF to levels observed in those without AF. Furthermore, phosphorylation of the ryanodine receptor (RyR2) at Ser-2808 and phospholamban at Ser-16 was significantly lower in patients with AF that received ß-blockers. La plataforma SAVIA (Anàlisi Semi-Automàtic d'Importància de Variables) intenta dotar el personal clínic d'eines per interactuar amb models d'aprenentatge automàtic sense necessitat de coneixements prèvis. Aquesta integració d'intel·ligència artificial i recerca clínica està transformant la recerca tradicional i és considerada el futur de l'atenció mèdica. La plataforma SAVIA proporciona una interfície interactiva per analitzar factors de risc i protectors de la salut cerebral, prioritzant la facilitat d'ús i la transparència en els fluxos de processament de dades. Desenvolupada en Python i Jupyter Notebooks, permet al personal clínic explorar fàcilment diversos models predictius. Inicialment concebuda per al Projecte UKBiobank, una extensa base de dades de més de 400.000 subjectes sans i malalts, la plataforma s'ha ampliat amb la inclusió de variables de morfometria cerebral provinents d'una col·laboració amb l'Hospital Sant Joan de Déu (Barcelona), millorant la profunditat i complexitat dels models psicopatològicament rellevants que SAVIA pot produir. A first version of the SAVIA (Semi-Automatic Variable Importance Analysis) platform has been developed to empower clinicians to interact with machine learning models without the need for a background in data science. This integration of artificial intelligence and clinical research is seen as pivotal for the future of healthcare, transforming how medical research is practiced. The SAVIA platform provides an interactive interface for analyzing risk and protective factors of brain health, prioritizing ease of use and transparent data processing workflows. Developed using Python and Jupyter Notebooks, it allows clinicians to explore various predictive models effortlessly. Originally conceived for the UKBiobank Project, a vast dataset of over 400.000 healthy and diseased subjects, the platform has expanded to include brain morphometry variables from a collaborative effort with the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital (Barcelona), enhancing the depth and complexity of the psychopathologically relevant models that the platform can produce. The obtained results are seen as a significant step towards harnessing the UKBiobank database's full potential.

Evolving scenarios require agile management of network services across various heterogeneous infrastructure and administrative domains. Deliveries of such services become a big challenge when projects have targets aiming to reach best class levels of performances in time to market optimization, project cost reduction and levels of quality of services. This work tries to report the experience and results obtained during 6 months of internship in Ericsson as Integration Engineer in the Orchestration Technology, that is the engineering discipline domain that try to dominate this problem using best available practices. Internship was the chance I looked for to move first steps in the exciting Integration Engineer career path, gaining practical experience by joining an excellent international project team. A relevant clinical application is the study of epilepsy, a pathology in the central nervous system caused by the cerebral cortex neuron’s malfunction. A pathological event indicative of epilepsy is the spike-and-wave. These are visible patterns seen in the EEG which can be analyzed in order to obtain a tool capable of efficiently detecting them, resulting in a method of diagnosis of epilepsy and detection of seizures. Therefore, the objective of the study is to obtain an optimal and automated algorithm in order to identify spike-and-waves in the EEG of epileptic patients. The approach is through an improvement of a previous model implemented in Matlab, with a more precise selection of spike-and-wave prototypes and numerous tests based on a large dataset. The results have been compared to a control group and to recordings of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients in order to understand how spike-and-waves are characteristic of epileptic patients but can also appear in ADHD subjects, with less frequency. Moreover, a prevention method has been studied; attempting to find a threshold to alarm the doctor in order to prevent epileptic crisis, based on the number and frequency of firings. Les plantes de fabricació estan subjectes a restriccions dinàmiques que requereixen una optimització robusta per millorar el rendiment i l' eficiència del sistema. En aquest projecte es presenta un nou sistema de control òptim basat en IA per a un bessó digital d' una planta de fabricació. El sistema proposat implementa un observador d' estat basat en IA per predir l' estat intern d' un model de procés altament incert i no lineal, tal com seria un sistema de producció real. El uso del sistema de control óptimo de IA mejora los KPIs del proceso y podría reducir potencialmente los costos de producción., Manufacturing plants are subject to dynamic constrains requiring robust optimization methods for improved performance and efficiency. A novel AI based optimal control system for a Digital Twin of a manufacturing plant is presented in this report. The proposed system implements an AI based state observer to predict the internal state of a highly uncertain and non-linear process model, such as a real production system. A multi-objective optimization function is used to control production parameters and keeps the process running at an optimal condition. The AI Optimization Control method was implemented on a study case on a steel manufacturing plant. The performance of the system was evaluated using the relevant manufacturing KPIs such as the equipment utilization and productivity rates of the process. The use of the AI optimal control system successfully improves the process KPIs and could potentially reduce production costs.

Investigadores del grup NeoNeuro de l'hospital Sant Joan de Déu estan investigant la maduració cerebral dels nadons prematurs i treballen en la creació d'un atles morfomètric dels solcs cerebrals segons les setmanes d'edat gestacional. Per donar suport al projecte, s'ha treballat en la millora d'una aplicació web de segmentació de solcs cerebrals implementada a Python desenvolupada prèviament. This project applies Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques on a virtual model of a Microgrid, with the objective of optimally controlling the distribution of energy to maximize the economical benefit for the Microgrid customers. The interest of the Microgrid lies in the creation of a local power grid which distributes energy through renewable energy sources and batteries that, with the application of intelligent control, coordinates the clients for the most profitable outcome for the grid. The proposed Microgrid adopts a centralized structure where a central controller makes all energy distribution decisions, optimizing control towards a common goal. The virtual model achieves the characteristics of a real Microgrid, but maintains a simplified response to alleviate computation and facilitate algorithm learning. The model is designed with the ”Simulink” engine, which allows easy modification of parameters if desired. The simulated model includes models of photovoltaic panels, wind micro-turbines, electrical batteries and households. The Reinforcement Learning technique introduces an innovative way of designing the Microgrid control algorithm, since it is based on interacting with the virtual model and obtaining feedback on the effectiveness of the actions, in order to determine the most optimal combination of actions. The ”Python” programming language is used to implement the Reinforced Learning in the Microgrid, making use of the ”Stable Baselines” library to control the value of power supplied by the battery, considering that it has a limited capacity. The project analyzes the results to see which tendencies does the ”Soft Actor Critic” (SAC) algorithm follow. Plasma-treated hydrogels have been put forward as a potential selective osteosarcoma therapy through the release of reactive species to the diseased site. To allow their translation to the clinics, it is crucial to show that the oxidative stress delivered by such hydrogels does not adversely affect healthy tissues. This is evaluated here by investigating the in vivo performance of a robocasted calcium phosphate cement infiltrated by a plasma-treated hydrogel. The plasma-treated composite implanted in a critical size bone defect of healthy rabbits revealed its safety, allowing equivalent bone ingrowth compared to the control scaffolds and to that of direct plasma treatment of the bone defect. La ciberseguretat s'està convertint en un tema cada dia més important que les empreses no poden ignorar, sobretot perquè actualment la majoria d'atacs han evolucionat fins al punt de fer que l'antivirus i el tallafocs siguin insuficients per garantir la protecció de la pròpia organització, estimulant els responsables en la ciberseguretat a invertir. cada cop més per estar al dia amb les amenaces cada cop més complexes. Això és molt perillós perquè fins i tot s'ha exposat maquinària fràgil que podria perdre la disponibilitat fins i tot amb atacs simples o accions aparentment inofensives, basades en versions obsoletes de programari i sistemes operatius, que es comuniquen entre entre sí amb protocols de comunicació clars, sense autenticació, ni criptografia. Aquest projecte es posiciona en aquesta àrea i tracta de la seguretat d'una línia de panells de recent compra que s'ha d'inserir en una de les instal·lacions de producció de Fincantieri, respectant totes les polítiques de ciberseguretat corporativa, bones pràctiques, limitant l'augment al mínim de la superfície d'atac després de la seva inserció. Les activitats s'han centrat en l'anàlisi dels riscos potencials als quals podria estar exposat aquest sistema i la definició dels correctius. Nowadays these networks have lost the protection due to segregation they had in the past years because of the massive introduction of IoT and the new paradigms of Industry 4.0 that are imposing the opening towards external systems such as the cloud and a tight integration with the corporate systems. This is very dangerous because even fragile machinery that could lose availability even with simple attacks or apparently harmless actions has been exposed. These assets are often based on obsolete versions of software and operating systems that communicate each other with clear text communication protocols, without any authentication or cryptography. This project is positioned in this area and deals with securing a recently purchased panel line that has been inserted in one of Fincantieri's production sites, respecting all corporate cybersecurity policies, best practices, limiting the increase of the attack surface due to its insertion in the company to the minimum. The activities focused on the analysis of the potential risks to which this system could be exposed and the definition of remediation. Considering the environment in which it has been operated, it is not always possible to act on the source of the problem and alternative measures must often be found that limit the criticalities highlighted.

En el món de la medicina, un dels càncers més culminants és el càncer de pròstata. La seva detecció en primers estadis és complicada, per la qual cosa en molts casos acaba desenvolupant en metàstasis i fins llavors no es detecta. Aquesta és una de les principals causes de mort en el càncer de pròstata. En els últims anys s'ha avançat molt i s'ha pogut trobar una manera de detectar-lo en primers estadis de la malaltia. Això consisteix a fer un seguiment de l'antigen específic de la pròstata (PSA) en homes d'entre 40 i 70 anys. Per altra banda, des del món de l'enginyeria i les matemàtiques es busquen recursos per aportar més en el món de la medicina. És per això que s'han creat molts models que poden preveure el comportament del PSA, i d'aquesta manera fer seguiments més específics i personalitzats per cada pacient en concret. En aquest projecte s'analitzen 3 diferents models i se n'escull un per encaixar-lo amb una base de dades. Posteriorment, s'analitzen els resultats obtinguts i es proposen millores del model., En el mundo de la medicina, uno de los cánceres más culminantes es el cáncer de próstata. This study reports a method for the detection of mechanical signaling anomalies in cardiac tissue through the use of deep learning and the design of two anomaly detectors. In contrast to anomaly classifiers, anomaly detectors allow accurate identification of the time position of the anomaly. The first detector used a recurrent neural network (RNN) of long short-term memory (LSTM) type, while the second used an autoencoder. Mechanical contraction data present several challanges, including high presence of noise due to the biological variability in the contraction response, noise introduced by the data acquisition chain and a wide variety of anomalies. Therefore, we present a robust deep-learning-based anomaly detection framework that addresses these main issues, which are difficult to address with standard unsupervised learning techniques. For the time series recording, an experimental model was designed in which signals of cardiac mechanical contraction (right and left atria) of a CD-1 mouse could be acquired in an automatic organ bath, reproducing the physiological conditions. In order to train the anomaly detection models and validate their performance, a database of synthetic signals was designed (n = 800 signals), including a wide range of anomalous events observed in the experimental recordings. The detector based on the LSTM neural network was the most accurate. A hallmark of atrial fibrillation is an excess of spontaneous calcium release events, which can be mimicked by ß1- or ß2-adrenergic stimulation. Because ß1-adrenergic receptor blockers (ß1-blockers) are primarily used in clinical practice, we here examined the impact of ß2-adrenergic stimulation on spontaneous calcium release and assessed whether the R- and S-enantiomers of the non-selective ß- blocker carvedilol could reverse these effects. For this purpose, human atrial myocytes were isolated from patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery and subjected to confocal calcium imaging or immunofluorescent labeling of the ryanodine receptor (RyR2). Interestingly, the ß2-adrenergic agonist fenoterol increased the incidence of calcium sparks and waves to levels observed with the non-specific ß-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol. Moreover, fenoterol increased both the amplitude and duration of the sparks, facilitating their fusion into calcium waves. Subsequent application of the non ß-blocking R-Carvedilol enantiomer reversed these effects of fenoterol in a dose-dependent manner. R-Carvedilol also reversed the fenoterol-induced phosphorylation of the RyR2 at Ser-2808 dose-dependently, and 1 µM of either R- or S-Carvedilol fully reversed the effect of fenoterol. Together, these findings demonstrate that ß2-adrenergic stimulation alone stimulates RyR2 phosphorylation at Ser-2808 and spontaneous calcium release maximally, and points to carvedilol as a tool to attenuate the pathological activation of ß2-receptors., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Aquest treball serveix com a prova de concepte per desenvolupar un cinturó basat en retroalimentació hàptica per fomentar l'exploració de la marxa humana. La rehabilitació actual i l'entrenament de dispositius assistits depèn de la repetició de moviments invariables. Contràriament, es troben estudis que demostren que entrenar amb una major variabilitat pot millorar l'adquisició d'aprenentatge motor i l'actuació de l'individu durant la realització de noves tasques. En conseqüència, és probable que entrenar l'habilitat de l'usuari per explorar nous moviments sigui beneficiós per poder aprofitar al màxim la tecnologia assistida. El dispositiu presentat en aquest treball de fi de grau fa un seguiment de la seva pròpia posició i, depenent de la seva localització, vibra un dels dos motors vibrotàctils que té instal·lats per tal de notificar a l'usuari. Aquesta investigació serveix com a base per futurament crear un dispositiu que guiarà als usuaris a explorar un rang de moviment més divers i, per tant, executar moviments més variables. Current rehabilitation and assistive device training relies on repeating consistent movements. In contrast, past work has shown that training with increased variability can improve motor learning and performance of new tasks. Consequently, it is likely that training user ability to explore new movements is beneficial to taking full advantage of assistive technology. The device presented in this thesis tracks its own position and, depending on its location, vibrates one of two vibrotactile motors to give instructions to the user. This work serves as a basis for further development of a device that will guide users to explore a more diverse range of motion and to perform variable movements. In the field of medical imaging, the division of an image into meaningful structures using image segmentation is an essential step for pre-processing analysis. Many studies have been carried out to solve the general problem of the evaluation of image segmentation results. One of the main focuses in the computer vision field is based on artificial intelligence algorithms for segmentation and classification, including machine learning and deep learning approaches. The main drawback of supervised segmentation approaches is that a large dataset of ground truth validated by medical experts is required. In this sense, many research groups have developed their segmentation approaches according to their specific needs. However, a generalised application aimed at visualizing, assessing and comparing the results of different methods facilitating the generation of a ground-truth repository is not found in recent literature. In this paper, a new graphical user interface application (MedicalSeg) for the management of medical imaging based on pre-processing and segmentation is presented. The objective is twofold, first to create a test platform for comparing segmentation approaches, and secondly to generate segmented images to create ground truths that can then be used for future purposes as artificial intelligence tools. En aquest projecte s’ha dut a terme la posada en marxa d’un sistema d’adquisició d’imatges hiperespectrals i el disseny d’una xarxa d’aprenentatge profund per la seva posterior classificació. L'objectiu consta d'adquirir imatges hiperespectrals i detectar anomalies per la seva posterior classificació mitjançant tècniques de programació d'aprenentatge profund. Per altra banda, un altre finalitat és simular l'adquisició d'aquestes imatges el més semblant a un procés de control de qualitat d'una indústria. Per dur a terme aquest projecte s’ha utilitzat: Dos tipus de càmeres: Una càmera de l’empresa Photonfocus capaç de treballar a rang de freqüències hiperespectrals VNIR (Visible Near Infra Red Bands) amb un rang entre 400-900nm. La segona càmera de l’empresa Specim FX17 que treballa a un rang de freqüències hiperespectrals NIR (Near Infra Red Bands) amb un interval entre 900-1700nm. Per processar les imatges hem fet servir un programari anomenat Scyven d’ús gratuït, recomana’t pel mateix fabricant. Per il·luminar aquest sistema s’ha utilitzat unes bombetes al·lògenes, amb els seus corresponents transformadors i un port bombetes dissenyat per aquest projecte que permeten la captura de les imatges dintre del rang de freqüències que s’ha determinat. Per l’elaboració de la xarxa neuronal s’ha usat les biblioteques de programari de codi obert TensorFlow i Keras, que estan especialitzades en l’àmbit de l’aprenentatge profund i automàtic. Tant una com l’altra estan basades i escrites en el llenguatge de programació de Phyton. The goal consists of acquiring hyperspectral images and detecting anomalies by their later classification using deep learning programming techniques. On the other hand, another aim is to simulate the acquisition of these images, the most similar to an industry quality control process. To carry out this project it has been used: Two types of cameras: A Photonfocus company camera capable of working at the VNIR hyperspectral frequency range (Visible Near Infra-Red Bands) with a range between 400–900 nm. The second camera of Specim FX17 works at a range of NIR hyperspectral frequencies (Near Infra-Red Bands) with a range between 900–1700nm. To process the images we used a software called free use Scyven, recommended by the manufacturer itself. To illuminate this system, allogeneic light bulbs have been used, with their corresponding transformers and a light bulb port designed for this project, allowing the capture of images within the range of frequencies that has been determined. For the elaboration of the neural network, open source libraries TensorFlow and Keras have been used, which are specialized in the field of deep and automatic learning. Both are based and written in the Phyton programming language. Google Colab, an interactive online programming notebook that allows you to write and run code, has been used for programming.

Aims It is unknown how ß-adrenergic stimulation affects calcium dynamics in individual RyR2 clusters and leads to the induction of spontaneous calcium waves. To address this, we analysed spontaneous calcium release events in green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged RyR2 clusters. Methods Cardiomyocytes from mice with GFP-tagged RyR2 or human right atrial tissue were subjected to immunofluorescent labelling or confocal calcium imaging. Results Spontaneous calcium release from single RyR2 clusters induced 91.4% ± 2.0% of all calcium sparks while 8.0% ± 1.6% were caused by release from two neighbouring clusters. Sparks with two RyR2 clusters had 40% bigger amplitude, were 26% wider, and lasted 35% longer at half maximum. Consequently, the spark mass was larger in two- than one-cluster sparks with a median and interquartile range for the cumulative distribution of 15.7 ± 20.1 vs 7.6 ± 5.7 a.u. (P < .01). ß2-adrenergic stimulation increased RyR2 phosphorylation at s2809 and s2815, tripled the fraction of two- and three-cluster sparks, and significantly increased the spark mass. Interestingly, the amplitude and mass of the calcium released from a RyR2 cluster were proportional to the SR calcium load, but the firing rate was not. The spark mass was also higher in 33 patients with atrial fibrillation than in 36 without (22.9 ± 23.4 a.u. vs 10.7 ± 10.9; P = .015). Conclusions Most sparks are caused by activation of a single RyR2 cluster at baseline while ß-adrenergic stimulation doubles the mass and the number of clusters per spark. Cardiac myocytes are the muscle cells that build up heart tissue and provide the mechanical action to pump blood by synchronously contracting at every heartbeat. Heart muscle contraction is regulated by intracellular calcium concentration which exhibits a complex spatio-temporal dynamical behavior at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. Details of such dynamical patterns are closely related to the mechanisms responsible for cardiovascular diseases , the single largest cause of death in the developed countries. The emerging field of translational cardiology focuses on the study of how such mechanisms connect and influence each other across spatial and temporal scales, eventually yielding to a certain clinical condition. To study such calcium dynamics in cardiac myocytes, we benefit from the recent advances in the field of experimental cell physiology. Fluorescence microscopy allows us to observe the distribution of calcium in the cell with a spatial resolution below one micron and a frame rate around one millisecond, thus providing a very accurate monitoring of calcium fluxes in the cell. The aim of the thesis summarized in this paper, was to develop image processing computational techniques for extracting quantitative data of physiological relevance from fluorescence confocal microscopy images at different scales. The two main subjects covered in the thesis were image segmentation and classification methods applied to fluorescence microscopy imaging of cardiac myocytes and calcium imaging. These methods were applied to a variety of problems involving different space and time scales, such as the localization of molecular receptors, the detection and characterization of spontaneous calcium-release events, and the propagation of calcium waves across a culture of cardiac cells. Foaming is undesirable in many industrial processes as it is difficult to regulate and frequently results in the entire operation being stopped for safety reasons. Therefore, it must be possible to determine and control the foaming process. The description of the fermentation broth is one of the difficulties. It is usually made up of solid cells that are dispersed in a liquid medium. Normally, the liquid medium gasifies and often foams as a result of the intense gasification of the liquid, which is required to allow the required mass transfer. This thesis deals with the investigation of foam in different conditions. The 1.2 ModRMedium has been used in a 25L container agitated by a Rushton D100 turbine. Several experiments have been carried out varying different conditions: medium concentration, different agitation speeds and the influence of the baffles in the process. Three different types of experiments have been executed at different agitation speeds: 20 g/kg Rhamnolipid, 100 g/kg Rhamnolipid and 100 g/kg Rhamnolipid with baffles. Based on these experiments, the behavior of the foam has been characterized and the results have been compared with those expected according to the literature. Finally, it has been possible to understand the behavior of the foam for the conditions in which this project has been executed. The behavior shown has been compared to what is expected in the literature and all the behaviors shown have been justified based on different hypotheses. It has been possible to conclude that increasing the agitation speed increases the height of the foam, it has also been possible to observe an inflection agitation speed that varies according to the concentration of the medium, which from this speed the foam begins to grow significantly and it becomes more unstable.
