Abstract

Second and third graders from six Dutch elementary schools (N = 168) solved two sets of almost identical addition and subtraction sums at a two-week interval. Inconsistency in strategies, which characterized half the subjects, was related to unfamiliar sums and resulted in misinterpreted errors. (TJH)

Item does not contain fulltext The AA. explore the media experience (i.e., media use and perception) of ethnic minorities living in The Netherlands. Members of four ethnic groups were interviewed: Turks, Moroccans, Surinamers and Antilleans/Arubans. Each group was subdivided into three age categories: 15 to 20 year-olds, 20 to 40 year-olds and 40 to 60 year-olds. The information on the 20 to 40 and 40 to 60 age groups was gathered through key community figures (e.g., social workers, teachers) known to be very familiar with the target groups due to their own ethnic origins and/or professional activities. The central objective was to discover how ethnic minorities living in The Netherlands use the available media to obtain information relating to their own region, The Netherlands, their country of origin, or the wider world. The AA. concluded that media use patterns varied by age and ethnicity. The respondents were quite critical of the way they were portrayed by the Dutch media. Generally speaking, they did not recognize themselves in Dutch media content.

Abstract

Trends in sensationalism in Dutch television news were investigated through content analysis of a series of Dutch TV news programs on fifteen sequential measurements between 1980 and 2004. In this period competition in the Dutch television (news) market continuously increased. Indicators of sensationalism were derived from three categories: 'arousing content', 'tabloid packaging' en 'vivid storytelling'. Although our findings suggest that the increase in sensationalism in Dutch television news broadcasts is not as comprehensive and ubiquitous as some observers seem to fear, results indicate that Dutch television news programs show an increase in sensationalist features between 1980 and 2004. For example, we see an increase in 'dramatic subject', 'dramatic sounds', 'personalization', 'close up' and 'layperson speaking'. The results of our study further suggest that the increased competition in the Dutch television news market is one of the driving forces behind sensationalism in television news broadcasts. From our results, we can conclude that the increase of sensationalism (at least partly) can be traced back to (a) the rise of new, commercial television news providers, that (b) develop new and more sensational television news formats, and to (c) existing television news programs' responses to a developing market situation.
