Abstract

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states of 124Ba were measured by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) technique. The γ-ray coincidence data were analysed by the Differential Decay Curve method (DDCM). The trend of the experimentally deduced normalized B(E2) values reveals a drop at the 8+1 state, which may be caused by structural changes in the backbending region.

8. Development of a new compact three-foil plunger device and Lifetime measurements using the Recoil Distance Doppler-shift method

Abstract

This thesis presents the development of a new compact differential three-foil plunger (Cologne Compact Differential Plunger - CoCoDiff) for the measurement of lifetimes of excited states in nuclei with the Recoil Distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method as well as auxiliary techniques and methods to aid the usage of this new plunger and of other plunger devices. The new plunger apparatus has been commissioned in an experiment on level lifetimes in 50Cr which was carried out at the Cologne FN tandem accelerator. There, lifetimes of the first 2+ and 4 +states have been measured with good precision which match with literature values and shell-model calculations. To enhance the precision of plunger experiments that need absolute foil separations, a new method to measure these has been developed, using an optical sensor. This method has been tested using an experiment on known level lifetimes in 181Ta also conducted in Cologne. Furthermore, an RDDS experiment on level lifetimes in 144Ce was carried out, which is a candidate for octupole deformation. Lifetimes of the first 2+, 4+, 6+ and 3- states haven been measured with good precision, the latter three for the first time. From these lifetimes, B(E2) and B(E1) transition strengths could be determined that give further proof for possible octupole deformation. Additionally, the lifetime of the 3- state is important for a possible future Coulomb excitation measurement in search of the yet unobserved 3- -> 0+ transition. Lastly, level lifetimes of the first 2+ and 4+ states in 60Ni have been measured using the RDDS method. They shed light into a prior confusing situation of contradicting literature values that allowed for no clear physical interpretation of the onset of collectivity of Ni isotopes regarding the tentative N=40 sub-shell closure.

Abstract

A γ - γ coincidence Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift measurement has been carried out on 60 Ni to re-measure the lifetime of the 2 1 + and 4 1 + states. The new lifetime of the 2 1 + state supports the adopted NNDC value but disagrees with the results of two more recent Doppler-Shift Attenuation Method measurements, which suggested a longer lifetime. The new result for the 4 1 + state's lifetime is significantly shorter than the one recommended in the latest NNDC compilation while also reducing its uncertainty. It therefore resolves an unclear situation, where an unexpected drop in transition strength appeared from 58 Ni to 60 Ni. Both values match very well with recently applied shell model calculations using the GXPF1A interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new method of extracting the g-ray intensities necessary to perform lifetime measurements using the differential decay curve method (DDCM) is presented in this work, the unresolved Doppler-shifted components method (UDCM). The UDCM allows for a DDCM analysis to be performed using a g-ray transition for which the fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components are unresolvable in energy and so are detected as a single peak. This technique was used to measure the known lifetime of the yrast 2+1 state in 50Mn with a depopulating transition that does not have resolvable fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components. The lifetime measured through applying the UDCM was consistent with the standard DDCM measurement of the 2+1 state. Use of the UDCM allows for DDCM lifetime measurements to be made using transitions of smaller g-ray energies, smaller recoil velocities and, in some cases, with a smaller uncertainty. In contrast to a standard DDCM analysis, a UDCM analysis is also independent of the widths of the fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components and as a result they do not need to be determined.

Abstract

Lifetimes of the T = 1 isobaric analog Ip = 2+ states in 50Mn and 50Cr were measured simultaneously by employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) technique. The states were populated in a fusion-evaporation reaction with a ¹²C beam on a 40Ca target. An analysis of the data and the calculations from the present work, together with the available B(E2 : 2+ RT 0+) data of the isobaric analog states in 50Fe and 50Cr, were used to study isospin symmetry in the three A = 50 isobaric nuclei. Shell-model calculations reproduce the magnitudes as well as the increasing trend of the B(E2) data with increasing Z. To draw a firm conclusion on the level of isospin mixing in the triplet, a new precision measurement of the 2+ RT 0+ transition rate in 50Fe will be required.

Abstract

The lifetime of the 21+ state of ²¹²Po was measured in the ²08Pb(¹²C,8Be)²¹²Po transfer reaction by g-ray spectroscopy employing the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method. The derived absolute B(E2) value of 2.6(3) W.u. indicates a low collectivity and contradicts previous claims of a-cluster components in the structure of the 21+ state. It is demonstrated that a consistent description of the properties of the 21+− 41+− 61+− 81+ sequence in ²¹²Po cannot be achieved in the framework of a single- j shell-model calculation, either. This puzzle is traced to the properties of the seniority-2 configurations in ²¹0Pb and ²¹0Po.

En étudiant le comportement, dans l’atmosphère du laboratoire, du mercure « adsorbé » sur l’or et l’étain, l’auteur a mis en évidence que les courbes représentatives de l’élimination mercurielle présentent, après une zone continue, une zone où la perte de mercure s’effectue par paliers : ceux-ci sont distants l’un de l’autre de quantités égales et la longueur des paliers croît régulièrement au fur et à mesure qu’on se rapproche du métal de base. Dans la pensée de l’auteur, ces paliers mettent en évidence les forces s’opposant à la destruction de la couche superficielle — forces qu’il assimile à une « tension superficielle ». Etendant cette notion aux solides où les nœuds du réseau sont occupés par des atomes ou molécules identiques, il a montré que l’évaporation de cristaux d’acide benzoïque très pur peut également s’opérer par paliers., Beckers Marcel. Abstract

The contraction of density globes on evacuation has been investigated in connection with a physicochemical examination of easily liquefied saturated hydrocarbons. A hydrostatic method of measurement has been applied to the problem, as well as the method of Travers; the results by both methods are in good agreement. The empirical equation proposed by Moles and Miravalles for the calculation of the compressibility of density globes is given additional confirmation by the results of the measurements. Data have been obtained which lend support to the hypothesis that the contraction of density globes is a linear function of the pressure difference to which the bulb is submitted. © 1929, American Chemical Society.
