6. Exploring diversity, equity, and inclusion perceptions among leadership in the field of Human-Animal Interaction

Abstract

The field and study of human-animal interaction (HAI) have experienced substantial and ongoing growth in scientific rigor and, public awareness. Yet, considerations for the role of diversity in the field have thus far remained limited, and efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in HAI are critically needed. As one of the first steps to improving DEI is to conduct a baseline assessment, the present study sought to address two questions: (1) what is the representativeness among field leaders (i.e. directors of HAI research and education centers)? and (2) what are their perceptions about the status and importance of DEI in the field? Surveys were completed by Human-Animal Bond (HAB) center representatives and directors regarding center and director demographics, and perceived importance of DEI and diversity among professionals and clients in the field. Themes from DEI-focused discussions with expert panels at the 2021 CHAB Conference, were used to interpret and frame the implications of these survey results and make recommendations for the next steps to actively promote and support DEI in HAI. Results indicated racial homogeneity among center directors, with some limited representativeness in other facets of diversity (e.g. sexual orientation, disability, religion). There was limited perceived diversity among field professionals and the communities served, but high perceived importance of diversity in the HAI field. Finally, results suggested inconsistencies in the understanding of barriers to DEI in HAI and a lack of knowledge about strategies for promoting DEI in the field. This manuscript provides a summary of current DEI in the field along with existing resources and guidelines from DEI experts.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of using motivational education approaches with students in a university core-curriculum health course. A purposeful sample of 136 college students was used (N = 136; Mage 19.0, SD = 1.18; female, 54.4%). Measures of physical activity and motivation were administered both before and after intervention. Participants reported an increase in perceived competence, t(135) = 2.379, p < .05; controlled motivation, t(135) = 2.201, p < .05; and autonomous motivation, t(135) = 2.658, p < .05. Students' motivation levels and perceptions of competence to engage in physical activity may be influenced by teachers' teaching style. Abstract

Human-animal contact can influence psychological and physiological parameters important to health and welfare; nevertheless, there has been relatively little research on the variables that influence or mediate those health consequences. In addition, little attention has been paid on how to create or alter the animal interactions for the betterment of people and their animals. The investigation can be guided by two theoretical perspectives, which make powerful but different and testable predictions: the biophilia hypothesis and social support theory. Along with this theoretically driven research, there is a need for replication of salient research findings to resolve important discrepancies in the literature. Last, animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has to be placed in the context of alternative therapies now available to define its specificity, risks, and overall benefits. Abstract

This study examined the influence of animal-assisted therapy, specifically fish aquariums, on nutritional intake in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Sixty-two individuals with AD who lived in a specialized units were studied. Baseline nutritional data were obtained followed by a 2-week treatment period when the aquariums were introduced. The treatment data were collected daily for 2 weeks then weekly for 6 weeks. Nutritional intake increased significantly (21.1%; p < .001) when the aquariums were introduced and continued to increase during 6-week weekly follow-up. Weight increased significantly (1.65 lbs; p < .001) over the 16-week period. In addition, participants required less nutritional supplementation, resulting in health care cost savings.
