4. A new module to simulate surface crop residue decomposition: Description and sensitivity analysis

Abstract

In the agroecosystem, surface crop residues are widely recognized as affecting many processes such as soil water dynamics, crop growth, nitrogen and carbon cycling. For this reason, developing models that simulate the effect of surface residues and their decomposition is crucial, especially while modeling conservation agriculture. To date, even though many cropping systems and C-oriented models differently simulate the evolution of surface residue biomass, a comprehensive approach is still missing. In this study, we developed a new simulation module that explicitly simulates the decomposition of surface residues, by including all the variables and processes that are relevant for agroecosystem's simulation. This module has been later integrated into the ARMOSA cropping system model. To quantify the contribution of each parameter to the simulated outputs (i.e., decomposed biomass), a sensitivity analysis (SA) was conducted, comparing the result with the APSIM model used as a benchmark. The SA was conducted on four different crop residues (maize, rye, soybean and wheat) over three different years. In addition, for each crop residue, we verified whether parameters changed their relevance depending on the considered time period. The most critical parameters of the new module reflected the importance of air temperature, soil water content and residue biomass in the decomposition process. The po-tential decomposition rate had minor importance, highlighting that, when setting crop-specific values, other environment-related parameters are more relevant for the actual decomposition rate. In the case of APSIM model, the potential decomposition rate and the optimum temperature for this process resulted in the first two ranks. Abstract

Simulation models represent soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in global carbon (C) cycle scenarios to support climate‐change studies. It is imperative to increase confidence in long‐term predictions of SOC dynamics by reducing the uncertainty in model estimates. We evaluated SOC simulated from an ensemble of 26 process‐based C models by comparing simulations to experimental data from seven long‐term bare‐fallow (vegetation‐free) plots at six sites: Denmark (two sites), France, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The decay of SOC in these plots has been monitored for decades since the last inputs of plant material, providing the opportunity to test decomposition without the continuous input of new organic material. The models were run independently over multi‐year simulation periods (from 28 to 80 years) in a blind test with no calibration (Bln) and with the following three calibration scenarios, each providing different levels of information and/or allowing different levels of model fitting: (a) calibrating decomposition parameters separately at each experimental site (Spe); (b) using a generic, knowledge‐based, parameterization applicable in the Central European region (Gen); and (c) using a combination of both (a) and (b) strategies (Mix). We addressed uncertainties from different modelling approaches with or without spin‐up initialization of SOC. Changes in the multi‐model median (MMM) of SOC were used as descriptors of the ensemble performance. On average across sites, Gen proved adequate in describing changes in SOC, with MMM equal to average SOC (and standard deviation) of 39.2 (±15.5) Mg C/ha compared to the observed mean of 36.0 (±19.7) Mg C/ha (last observed year), indicating sufficiently reliable SOC estimates. 11. Use of organic inputs by arable farmers in six agro-ecological zones across Europe : Drivers and barriers

Abstract

Soil organic matter (SOM) in agricultural soils builds up via – among others - the use of organic inputs such as straw, compost, farmyard manure or the cultivation of green manures or cover crops. SOM has benefits for long-term soil fertility and can provide ecosystem services. Farmer behaviour is however known to be motivated by a larger number of factors. Using the theory of planned behaviour, we aimed to disentangle these factors. We addressed the following research question: What are currently the main drivers and barriers for arable farmers in Europe to use organic inputs? Our study focuses on six agro-ecological zones in four European countries (Austria, Flanders [Belgium], Italy and the Netherlands) and four practices (straw incorporation, green manure or cover crops, compost and farmyard manure). In a first step, relevant factors were identified for each practice with farmers using 5 to ten semi-structured interviews per agro-ecological zone. In a second step, the relevance of these factors was quantified and they were classified as either drivers or barriers in a large scale farm survey with 1263 farmers. In the semi-structured interviews, 110 factors that influenced farmer decisions to use an organic input were identified. In the larger farm survey, 60% of the factors included were evaluated as drivers, while 40% were evaluated as barriers for the use of organic inputs. Major drivers to use organic inputs were related to the perceived effects on soil quality (such as improved soil structure or reduced erosion) and the positive influence from social referents (such as fellow farmers or agricultural advisors). Major barriers to use organic inputs were financial (increased costs or foregone income) and perceived effects on crop protection (such as increased weeds, pests and diseases, or increased pesticide use). Abstract

Alternative management practices such as no-tillage compared to conventional tillage are expected to recover or increase soil quality and productivity, even though all of these aspects are rarely studied together. Long-term field experiments (LTEs) enable analysis of alternative management practices over time. This study investigated a total of 251 European LTEs in which alternative management practices such as crop rotation, catch crops, cover crops/green manure, no-tillage, non-inversion tillage and organic fertilization were applied. Response ratios of indicators for soil quality, climate change and productivity between alternative and reference management practices were derived from a total of 260 publications. Both positive and negative effects of alternative management practices on the different indicators were shown and, as expected, no alternative management practice could comply with all objectives simultaneously. Productivity was hampered by non-inversion tillage, FYM amendments and incorporation of crop residues. SOC contents were increased significantly following organic fertilizers and non-inversion tillage. GHG emissions were increased by slurry application and incorporation of crop residues. Our study showed that alternative management practices beneficial to one group of indicators (e.g. organic fertilizers for biological soil quality indicators) are not necessarily beneficial to other indicators (e.g. increase of crop yields). We conclude that LTEs are valuable for finding ways forward in protecting European soils as well as finding evidence-based alternative management practices for the future; however, experiments should focus more on biological soil quality indicators as well as GHG emissions to enable better evaluation of trade-offs and mutual benefits of management practices.

Abstract

European research projects in agriculture and forestry produce excellent scientific papers. Most of them could contribute to the development of new innovations in Europe but their adoption is still limited. The European project VALERIE (Valorising European Research for Innovation in AgriculturE and Forestry), wanted by the European Commission, aims at improving the transfer of EU research results in terms of concrete innovations for farmers and advisors in agriculture and forestry, facilitating their integration in management practices. The main output of the VALERIE project will be a smart web research assistant (ask-Valerie.eu) which will be able to mimic the interaction between experts and users for answering concrete questions. Indeed, this tool should be able to help the user to write and develop his request and then to propose a list of relevant documents, using in particular results from EU projects, selected among an expert-selected document base. Ask-Valerie browser will be available online at the end of the project. At this stage, a beta version of askValerie.eu is available and included in a testing process by VALERIE’s partners. The web browser is based on an ontology containing currently about 6200 concepts and the document data base already contains about 4300 documents. By developing the askValerie.eu tool, some key issues have been raised and are discussed, notably dealing with access to information, available documents format and matching between research products and needs of stakeholders.

Le projet s’articule autour du développement d’un moteur de recherche (ask-Valerie.eu) qui a l’ambition de mimer une forme d’interaction entre un expert et un utilisateur afin de suggérer à celui-ci de la documentation pertinente. Cet outil se construit autour de trois composantes : une ontologie, une base documentaire et un système d’interrogation de cette base. A ce jour, la version bêta de l’outil fait l’objet de tests par les acteurs partenaires du projet. L’ontologie actuelle comprend 6200 concepts et 4300 documents ont été intégrés à la base documentaire. Les intérêts et limites de cet outil et de la dé-marche sont discutés en guise d’analyse de leur pertinence.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [TR1_IRSTEA]DTAM [Axe_IRSTEA]DTAM-QT2-ADAPTATION; This report consists of two components: (i) an overview of drivers and barriers for the adoption of so-called ‘Best Management Practices’ (BMPs) in soil management, as seen through the eyes of farmers (the extensive Chapter 2); and (ii) an inventory of cost associated with the implementation of certain BMPs at the farm (the brief Chapter 3). The overview of drivers and barriers presented in Chapter 2 is based on a survey held among 10,000 farmers in different farm types across all CATCH-C partner countries, 2520 of whom responded. The inventory of costs to implement BMPs is based on empirical information collected by the research team in the project partner countries, through various channels. The BMPs studied in the farmer survey include options for crop rotation, tillage, nutrient management, crop residue management, water management, and grassland management. The survey was carried out in 24 major ‘farm type x agri-environmental zone’ (FTZ) units across eight partner countries, three per country. An FTZ unit is defined by the combination of an agri-environmental zone (with climate, slope, and soil texture as keys) with a farm type (arable-cereal, arable-specialised, dairy, mixed, etc.). The criteria to select FTZs for the farm surveys were 1) representation of a large agricultural area, 2) large economic value of the FTZ and/or 3) occurrence of soil degradation problems. In most agri-environmental zones, one specific farm type was studied, or sometimes two. Our FTZ units were also called ‘major farm types’ in other project documents. To identify drivers and barriers for adopting Best Management Practices (BMPs), we applied a behavioural approach, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1988; Ajzen, 1991), to identify the main barriers and drivers of farmers towards adoption of sustainable management practices. The theory and details of the results obtained were extensively reported in Deliverable D4.422 of the CATCH-C project (Bijttebier et al., 2014).

Abstract

Summary: Quantifying short‐ and long‐term availability of animal manure nitrogen (N) is of practical interest to ensure adequate crop yield, minimize N pollution and reduce inputs of mineral‐N fertilizer. We measured short‐term carbon (C) and N dynamics after one or six repeated additions to soil (every 56 days) of ammonium sulphate (AS) and undigested (PS) and anaerobically digested (DPS) pig slurry in a laboratory incubation experiment. Soil CO2 emissions, pH and mineral N (ammonium + nitrate) were measured during the period of 0–56 days following fertilizer additions. An accompanying experiment was conducted with similar but 15N‐labelled fertilizers to measure soil mineral N 56 and 112 days after one, three or six repeated additions, and to estimate the increase in slurry available N after repeated additions. Nitrogen from slurries potentially available for plants (77–91, 44–58 and 57–66% of added N for AS, PS and DPS, respectively) was close to that supplied in mineral form with the fertilizer, indicating negligible net mineralization of slurry organic N, after both one and repeated additions. In fact, soil mineral N increased in most of the treatments because of repeated additions, but the increases were small, on average 0.5–2.1% of added N per period of 56 and 112 days. Calculations of availability of fertilizer N based on unlabelled N were equally precise compared with those estimated with 15N, but trends over time were more variable. We conclude that many repeated additions (simulating a long manuring history) are needed to obtain a marked increase in available slurry N, even under controlled conditions. Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [TR1_IRSTEA]DTAM [Axe_IRSTEA]DTAM-QT2-ADAPTATION; During the past decennia, best management practices (BMPs) have been developed in order to maintain or restore soil health which is essential to the sustainability and resilience of the farm. Adoption rates of these practices vary among different countries and even among different regions within a country. Adoption rates depend on the specific context of a region or a country, consisting of biophysical, economic, social but also regulatory and institutional conditions. Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate farmers’ barriers towards adoption of BMPs across Europe. To identify drivers and barriers for adopting BMPs, we applied a behavioral approach, based on the theory of planned behavior. This approach has been proven successful and offers a repeatable methodology which is very valuable for performing attitudinal research in an wide European context. According to this theory, the greater the intention to behave, the more likely one is to actually perform the behavior. The intention of a farmer to implement a certain BMP is determined by individual beliefs on a set of outcomes (expected effects) associated with the practice, on a set of referents who think the farmer should perform the behavior, and on a set of control factors that might facilitate or obstruct the behavior. All these beliefs influence a farmers’ intention to adopt a certain BMP, and are acting as cognitive drivers or barriers which encourage or discourage the farmer to adopt a specific BMP. This report describes the main drivers and barriers on BMPs perceived by the farmers in 24 Farm Type Zones (FTZ) spread over 8 European countries (Poland, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Austria, Germany). These FTZs are regions within a country and are characterized by land use, farm specialization and by slope, soil texture and climate. The criteria to select FTZs for the study were 1) representation of a large agricultural area, 2) large economic value of the FTZ and/or 3) occurrence of soil degradation problems. The BMPs studied in each FTZ were determined based on expert judgment for their potential contribution to improve soil sustainability in that specific FTZ. About 20 different BMPs were studied across all countries.

Abstract

Organic inputs including livestock manures provide nitrogen (N) to crops beyond the year of their application. This so-called residual N effect should be taken into account when making decisions on N rates for individual fields, but also when interpreting N response trials in preparation of recommendations. This paper addresses general principles of residual N effects, gives literature-based estimates of them, and reviews to which extent residual N effects are included in recommendations and regulations in selected countries.

Zerourou; International audience; Although existing simulation tools can be used to study the impact of agricultural management on production activities in specific environments, they suffer from several limitations. They are largely specialized for specific production activities: arable crops/cropping systems, grassland, orchards, agro-forestry, livestock etc. Also, they often have a restricted ability to simulate system externalities which may have a negative environmental impact. Furthermore, the structure of such systems neither allows an easy plug-in of modules for other agricultural production activities, nor the use of alternative components for simulating processes. Finally, such systems are proprietary systems of either research groups or projects which inhibits further development by third parties. SEAMLESS aims to provide a tool to integrate analyses of impacts on the key aspects of sustainability and multi-functionality, particularly in Europe. This requires evaluating agricultural production and system externalities for the most important agricultural production systems. It also requires a simulation framework which can be extended and updated by research teams, which allows a manageable transfer of research results to operational tools, and which is transparent with respect to its contents and its functionality. The Agricultural Production and Externalities Simulator (APES) is a modular simulation system aimed at meeting these requirements, and targeted at estimating the biophysical behavior of agricultural production systems in response to the interaction of weather and agro-technical management. APES is a framework which uses components that offer simulation options for different processes of relevance to agricultural production systems. Models are described in the associated help files of components, and a shared ontology is built on the web. Components like these, which are designed to be inherently re-usable, that is not targeted specifically to a given modelling framework, also represent a way to share modelling knowledge with other projects and the scientific community in general. This chapter describes the current state of APES development and presents modelling options in the system, and its software architecture.
