Because approach and avoidance are fundamental for human behavior, it should be triggered spontaneously by the stimuli. However, current paradigms used to measure approach often force participants to intentionally process the stimuli by using a block design. We offer a paradigm based on the VAAST (Rougier et al., 2018) where participants are not asked to process the stimuli.

This project is the third replication of Pronin, Lin, and Ross (2002)'s second experiment. We aim to replicate the results of our first replications (see https://osf.io/ncz7w/ & https://osf.io/ckzj7) as well as those of the original study by Pronin et al. (2002).

To form and change indirect evaluative responses, we developed a VAAST-based approach and avoidance training (Rougier et al., 2018). We compared this training with an instruction-based one through three studies, and found no added-value of the actual training. We discuss these results in light to the idea of evaluation acquisition through the registration of co-occurrences in the environment.

Approach/avoidance paradigms could constitute an interesting alternative in measuringintergroup attitudes, notably if they overcome one criticism often addressed toward classic indirect tasks: measuring attitudes beyond the influence of cultural knowledge. Using intergroup stimuli and a population likely to be exposed to a similar cultural knowledge, we observed two informative results regarding this issue: approach/avoidance effects measured by the Visual Approach/Avoidance by the Self Task (VAAST) varied across participants (i.e., consistent with the variability of intergroup attitudes; Experiment 1) and both participants of dominant and non-dominant groups produced an ingroup bias (Experiment 2). A last experiment (Experiment 3) showed that compatibility scores in the VAAST predict trustworthiness ratings of the ingroup/outgroup. This experiment also investigated potential differences between the VAAST and the IAT. These results suggest that approach/avoidance tasks (notably the VAAST) could be relevant to assess personal attitudes when it comes to normatively sensitive topics.
