Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) may occur following viral exanthemata or following vaccination. The disorder represents an allergic phenomenon which appears to result from delayed hypersensitivity to myelin basic proteins. On the other hand, circulating immune complexes are postulated to cause vascular injury. In this study we report computerized tomography (CT) findings in a case of ADEM due to Semple type vaccination.

7th International Symposium on Ecology and Environmental Problems - DEC 18-21, 2013 - Antalya, TURKEY WOS: 000351332400005 Five biotic indices were used for the assessment of water quality of Esen River in South-west of Turkey. The classification of water quality based on benthic macroinvertebrate and physical and chemical parameters were also done. Taxonomic composition of benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was used for calculation of the following biological indices; Saproby Index (SI), Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP), Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT), Family Biotic Index (FBI) and Belgian Biotic Index (BBI). Electrical conductivity, temperature, dissolved 02 content, pH, BOD5, Cl-, NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO4-P were analyzed. According to the data obtained, the water quality of Esen River varied from poor to high ecological status. The indices SI, BMWP, BBI and ASPT were the more adequate estimate of water quality in accordance with physicochemical characteristics of the examined watercourse. The nesting activities of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta Stejneger, 1902) and anthropogenic factors affecting them were monitored over 7 years (2002–2008) on Dalaman-Sarıgerme beach, one of the main nesting grounds in Turkey. Out of the 2620 nesting emergences recorded during the entire study period, only 645 (24.6%) resulted in successful nesting, giving an annual mean number of nests of 92. The collective number of eggs in these nests numbered 50239, with 40079 (79.8%) of them producing hatchlings. Out of the total number of eggs laid, 8128 (16.2%) resulted in dead embryos and 2032 (4.0%) in unfertilized eggs. The mean incubation period averaged 49 days (range 40–67 days) and the mean clutch size was 79.0 (range 18–150 eggs). Turtle nests were more concentrated on the undeveloped parts of the beach than on developed parts. In the other sections, few emergences occurred and either no or few nests were recorded. In Section I, which contained hotels and water sports facilities, only a few non-nesting emergences were observed. Of the number of nests that were observed, 32% were laid in Section II, which contained recently built hotels, 60% were in Section III and 8% were in Section IV, the undeveloped portion containing beach rocks. There is very clear evidence that the Loggerhead Turtles are shifting their nesting sites to the undisturbed sites along the beach. The negative factors that seem to be affecting them include water sports, hotel lights and beach rocks. In order to protect sea turtles, there needs to be a better understanding of how effective beach protection can be established. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Monthly variations and the effects of host size on parasite prevalence and mean intensity were examined in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) from Beyşehir Lake in Turkey. This study was carried out between March 2003 and February 2005. A total of 233 fish were examined. Three parasites species were identified: Dactylogyrus minutus, Caryophyllaeus laticeps, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi. Infection with Dactylogyrus minutus was recorded on fish in all months with the exception of April. Peak infection occurred in May (69.23%). Infection of C. Caryophyllaeus laticeps was the highest in April (72.22%). Prevalence levels of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi were rather low, less than 35% in all months. The distribution of infrapopulations of Dactylogyrus minutus, Caryophyllaeus laticeps and Bothriocephalus acheilognathi did not vary significantly with size class of fish (P>0.05), peaking in larger size classes. © Central Fisheries Research Institute (CFRI) Trabzon, Turkey and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

As a result, 26 taxa belong to Chlorophyta, 30 taxa to Cyanophyta, 1 taxon to Chrysophyta and 4 taxa to Euglenophyta were identified and totally 61 taxa were determined. In this study it was found out that II. station is the most crowded location according to number of the taxa among six stations. The most densely found taxa in this station were Komvophoron constrictum, the species of Microcyctis, Oscillatoria, Chroococcus genera and members of Chloroccoccales. It is thought that the reasons of abundance of Microcyctis aeroginosa in the ambience are water temperature as well as water pollution.

- Abstract
Lake ecosystems are, in particular, vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. Rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus is one of the aquatic organisms affected by heavy metals. Therefore, heavy metals Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Pb and Cd were measured in different tissues of rudd, S. erythrophthalmus, which include muscle, liver and gill, to assess the fish pollution with heavy metals. Among the heavy metals studied Cr, Pb and Cd were below detection limit (< 0.03). The mean concentrations of heavy metals in muscle varied from 5.70-17.31 mg/kg Zn. In the liver the concentrations varied from 76.37-150.94 mg/kg Fe, 93.14-116.41 mg/kg Zn and in the gills they varied from 64.58-108.13 mg/kg Fe, 130.15-170.84 mg/kg Zn and 6.52-18.12 mg/kg Mn. The tissues of rudd, S .erythrophthalmus showed positive relationships in Fe levels of the muscle and liver (> 0.05) and Mn levels in gill (> 0.05), while there was a negative relationships in Zn levels of the muscle, liver and gill (< 0.05). The results of the study indicated that no serious pollution in the lake is caused by heavy metals.

In this study, epilithic algae of Akcay were investigated betweenJune 2001 and September 2002. for each preparation, approximately 200 diatom valves were caunted, according to their dominance values, these species were utilized by method of [1]. Thus, if the species were found in the preparations, but was not encountered, it was given an accepted value of "0,1". Then the percentage of each species in the community was calculated. After then, if frequency of the species was more than % 10, named as "dominant"; if this value was between % 1 and % 10, named as "present" and if it was less than % 1, as "exist". Also in our study, if dominance value of the species was between % 5 and % 10 % 10; it was named as "present" and if it was more than % 10, as "dominant". As a result, 75 diatom taxa were totally determinated. Among of these taxa, Cymbella affinis Kutzing (% 17,40) and Achnanthes minutissima Kutzing (% 16,06) were found as "dominant" , Denticula elegans Kutzing (% 9,82), Gomphonema olivaceum (Lyngbya) Ktitzing (% 9,04), Diatome vulgare Bory (% 7,20), Meridion circulare var. constricta Van Heurck (% 5,76), Gomphonema parvulum Kutzing (% 5,44), Synedra ulna (Nitszh) Ehrenberg (% 5,24), Navicula exigua (Greg) Muller (% 5,19) were found as "present". On the other hand, it was found that, dominance value of these taxa were % 81,15 in all taxa in this study., Bu cahsrnada Akcay'da tespit edilen epilitik diyatomelerin mevsimsel degisimleriHaziran 2001 ile Eylul 2002 tarihleri arasmda incelenrnistir. - Abstract
Karabağlar (Muğla, Turkey) is one of those settlements that over time has come to blend well with its natural assets. Not only are the man-made and natural components of this seasonal settlement unique, and in harmony with one another, but they have also persisted throughout the centuries despite much adversity. Previous research has revealed how two landscape components particular to the area, namely irimand kesik, have resulted in a remarkable character. Further inquiry into other aspects of Karabağlar will help in the depiction of its original layout, taking into account the wealth of landscape elements and structures that have a couple of millennia, or more, of historical precedent. The originality of the spatial layout of a yurtsetting, the lifestyle that is generated around a coffeehouse, in addition to a masjid and plane trees, all deserve attention as a system of diverse values worthy of conservation.

Two children, both girls, aged 11 and 16 with a postoperative biliary fistula and cholelithiasis, choledochal cyst and common bile duct stones have undergone endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST), leading to a rapid recovery from their pathologies, thanks to cooperative work. In reviewing the literature we have not come across any cases of EST in our patients' age group. There were no complications during or immediately after endoscopic sphincterotomies. We believe that it has become an important and valuable rival to conventional surgical means with correct indications and in experienced hands.

A new instrument for suction rectal biopsy in infants suspected of having Hirschsprung′s disease is described that can be completely dismantled, physically cleaned, lubricated, and heat sterilised. Triple rectal suction biopsy instrument with the patent application, which involves (0.5 cm diameter) suction of mucosa and sub-mucosa and provides taking three different biopsies within a 2 cm distant from each other with a single shot, instead of only one or taking a full layer biopsy under general anesthesia for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease. As a preliminary study, in the 36 and 12 biopsy materials taken from the rabbits and children, respectively, it was found that mucosa and sub-mucosa were sufficient and in all of the cross sections, parasympathetic nerve fibers, and ganglion cells were existed. A successful biopsy was usually achieved and no complications occurred.

- Abstract
A 12-year-old boy was admitted to hospital for abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. On physical examination he had râles on the lower right hemithorax without any respiratory complaints. Chest X-ray revealed a condensation in the right lower chest. Abdominal findings were secondary to lobar pneumonia. Treatment of pneumonia with antibiotics showed no improvement over 2 days. On bronchoscopy no foreign body was seen, but pus was aspirated. Two days later a mass appeared on the right hemithorax and fistulized. An organic foreign body, Hordeum murinum, with 3-5 ml of pus was observed. Chest X-ray taken at the day of fistulization showed no pneumothorax or subcutaneous emphysema. Less than 11 cases of pneumocutaneous fistulas secondary to aspiration of grasses have been reported in literature. Why an ear of Hordeum murinum can migrate only in a forward direction and why a pneumothorax had not developed is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of thesis is to evaluate criticisms directed to high-rise buildings which have firstly used for residential purposes with modernism in terms of their hindering social contact, and to explain in what kind of spaces the residents of high-rise building sustain their social and environmental contacts. This form was aimed to be used as the building type of high-rise, low density urban form in CIAM meeting for decreasing health problems created by industrialization on individuals. In contrast, Team 10 criticized high-rise residential buildings by propounding disposal of street and not gathering people by using green areas. They propounded the urban element which is low-rise spreading in horizontal as the form of increment of social connection. In this study, principally diversified existence of social and environmental communication space are advocated in every urban environment depending on distinctive spatial organizations. Matrix study was made depending on height, density and coverage as three inputs of residential types, and the idea defended was tried to be proven. Communication spaces in high-rise residential buildings were analyzed in urban design and architecture scales. For this purpose, urban design scaled study was analyzed in the frame of territoriality which is related to the main topic of the thesis as residential area, and public and private space continuity types came into prominence. Architecture spaces constituting social and environmental contiguity spaces in high-rise residences were discussed in the frame of contemporary buildings and utopias. The explanation of diversified connection spaces in high-rise residential blocks will be hold. 173

`Bağ? settlements have been a part of dynamic spatial systems, which seasonally depend on and reciprocally interact with Anatolian towns throughout centuries. This thesis presents the transforming setting of `bağ? settlements related to changing values and meanings through an ontological assessment. Therefore, the thesis assumes that the main values of spatial organization, farmland pattern, ecological formation, settlement character, socio-cultural structure and lifestyle of the inhabitants constitute the unique entity of `bağ? settlements. In time, the pressures of changing socio-economic conditions have destroyed the interaction between Anatolian towns and `bağ? settlements. The thesis explains the changing role of `bağ? settlements, changing and conflicting land uses and the loss of unique `bağ? character in the case of Muğla-Karabağlar.Karabağlar is a `bağ? settlement in the southwestern Turkey, where Muğla town residents live seasonally. It is a third grade natural site, the unique character, the natural and cultural assets and the lifestyle of which must be preserved. However, with transformation of the main values, meanings and practices, Karabağlar could no longer perpetuated its initial existence of being. Karabağlar is significant for two reasons: it has natural and cultural beings that need to be conserved, and as it still goes through a transformation process. The master?s thesis of the author evaluated conservation plan of Karabağlar. Differently, this doctoral thesis evaluates the dynamics of the spatio-temporal transformation process in Karabağlar. It presents the changing role and significance of Karabağlar within the town-country continuum. This situation brings forward the conservation problematic of the character, landscape and uniqueness of Karabağlar. Within this respect, the thesis contributes to the literature of `bağ? settlements in terms of defining their being and changing role throughout the history. 299

The aim of this thesis is to examine the affects of mobile communication practiceson urban public places, particularly on meeting places in urban space. Thecontribution of mobile communication technologies into daily practices and rapidpenetration of them into everyday-life is quite obvious in the last decade. Theinevitable presence of mobile phones in everyday-life practices encourages urbanresearchers to consider their impacts on urban social context and consequently onurban public places. The objective of the research is to understand theincompatibility between the existing urban image and the mental image of mobilesociety.Mobile phones enable people to organize meetings independent from the scheduledprogram. This device not only increases the mobility of the user within the city butalso enhances the individual?s ability to develop coherent cognitive maps; because itgives the freedom of choice to pick-up the location for ?meeting places?. Forinstance, beside landmarks, paths have been given new identities by mobile society. An increase in the number of indoor or outdoor meeting places (some being entirelyrandom in selection), contributes to the cognitive maps and thus to the identity ofthe city. This stands as a contradicting argument to the classical understanding ofthe city and its parts, which is by and large accepted to be based on visualexperiences. The predetermined and limited components (nodes, landmarks) whichhelp individuals meet (and socialize) are now modest items of a larger inventory ofsettings. This thesis is aiming to analyze the behavioral and perceptual changes thatderive from mobile communication practices. Through this research, thearchitectural and spatial qualities of the old and new inventories of meeting placesare also a part of the study to reveal the differences, if any. 174
