In most legumes, two typical features found in leaves are diverse compound forms and the pulvinus-driven nyctinastic movement. Many genes have been identified for leaf-shape determination, but the underlying nature of leaf movement as well as its association with the compound form remains largely unknown. Using forward-genetic screening and whole-genome resequencing, we found that two allelic mutants of Medicago truncatula with unclosed leaflets at night were impaired in MtDWFARF4A (MtDWF4A), a gene encoding a cytochrome P450 protein orthologous to Arabidopsis DWARF4. The mtdwf4a mutant also had a mild brassinosteroid (BR)-deficient phenotype bearing pulvini without significant deficiency in organ identity. Both mtdwf4a and dwf4 could be fully rescued by MtDWF4A, and mtdwf4a could close their leaflets at night after the application of exogenous 24-epi-BL. Surgical experiments and genetic analysis of double mutants revealed that the failure to exhibit leaf movement in mtdwf4a is a consequence of the physical obstruction of the overlapping leaflet laminae, suggesting a proper geometry of leaflets is important for their movement in M. truncatula. These observations provide a novel insight into the nyctinastic movement of compound leaves, shedding light on the importance of open space for organ movements in plants.

The LAM1 transcription factor regulates expansion of primary leaflets in the compound leaves of tomato, and also affects floral organ development, fruit size, and initiation of secondary leaflets., Plant-specific WOX family transcription factors play important roles ranging from embryogenesis to lateral organ development. The WOX1 transcription factors, which belong to the modern clade of the WOX family, are known to regulate outgrowth of the leaf blade specifically in the mediolateral axis; however, the role of WOX1 in compound leaf development remains unknown. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole WOX family in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) indicates that there are 10 members that represent the modern, intermediate, and ancient clades. Using phylogenetic analysis and a reverse genetic approach, in this study we identified SlLAM1 in the modern clade and examined its function and tissue-specific expression pattern. We found that knocking out SlLAM1 via CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing led to narrow leaves and a reduced number of secondary leaflets. Overexpression of tomato SlLAM1 could rescue the defects of the tobacco lam1 mutant. Anatomical and transcriptomic analyses demonstrated that floral organ development, fruit size, secondary leaflet initiation, and leaf complexity were altered due to loss-of-function of SlLAM1. These findings demonstrate that tomato SlLAM1 plays an important role in the regulation of secondary leaflet initiation, in addition to its conserved function in blade expansion.

Optimizing plant architecture is an efficient approach for breeders to increase crop yields, and phytohormones such as gibberellins (GAs) play an important role in controlling growth. Medicago truncatula is a model legume species, but the molecular mechanisms underlying its architecture are largely unknown. In this study, we examined a tobacco retrotransposon Tnt1-tagged mutant collection of M. truncatula and identified dwarf and increased branching 1 (dib1), which exhibited extreme dwarfism and increased numbers of lateral branches. By analysis of the flanking sequences of Tnt1 insertions in different alleles of the tagged lines, we were able to clone DIB1. Linkage analysis and reverse screening of the flanking-sequence tags identified Medtr2g102570 as the gene corresponding to the DIB1 locus in the dib1 loss-of-function mutants. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that DIB1 was the ortholog of PsGA3ox1/Le in Pisum sativum. Expression analysis using a GUS-staining reporter line showed that DIB1 was expressed in the root apex, pods, and immature seeds. Endogenous GA4 concentrations were markedly decreased whilst some of representative GA biosynthetic enzymes were up-regulated in the dib1 mutant. In addition, exogenous application of GA3 rescued the dib1 mutant phenotypes. Overall, our results suggest that DIB1 controls plant height and axillary bud outgrowth via an influence on the biosynthesis of bioactive GAs. DIB1 could therefore be a good candidate gene for breeders to optimize plant architecture for crop improvement.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with zigzag peripheries are high perspective candidates for organic electronics. However, large fused acenes are still poorly studied due to the tedious synthesis. Herein we report a non-substituted fused bistetracene DBATT (2.3,8.9-dibenzanthanthrene) as the semiconductor on low-voltage-driven organic thin-film transistors. The systematic studies of thin-film growth on various self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified gate dielectrics and the electrical performances were carried out. The sub-monolayer of the semiconductor film shows larger island domains on the alkyl chain SAM. This device exhibits the hole mobility of 0.011 cm2·V−1·s−1 with a current ratio of IonIIoff above 105.

Rationale and Objectives To investigate whether iodine quantification extracted from enhanced dual energy-computed tomography (DE-CT) is useful for distinguishing lung squamous cell carcinoma from adenocarcinoma and to evaluate whether a single scan evaluated during the venous phase (VP) can be substituted for scans evaluated during other phases. Materials and Methods Sixty-two patients with lung cancer (32 squamous cell carcinomas; 30 adenocarcinomas) underwent enhanced dual-phase DE-CT scans, including an arterial phase and VP. The iodine concentration (IC), normalized iodine concentration (NIC), and slope of the curve (K) in lesions were measured during two scanning phases in two different pathological types of lung cancers. The differences in parameters (IC, NIC, and K) between these two types of lung cancers were statistically analyzed. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic curves of these parameters were performed to discriminate squamous cell carcinoma from adenocarcinoma. Results The mean IC, NIC, and K in adenocarcinomas were all higher than those in squamous cell carcinomas during the two scanning phases. However, the differences in these parameters between the two types of cancers were significant only during the VP, not during the arterial phase. Receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated that the optimal thresholds of the IC, NIC, and K for discriminating squamous cell carcinoma from adenocarcinoma were 1.550, 0.227, and 1.608, respectively. In addition, the sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve were 81.2%, 83.3%, and 0.871 for the IC; 56.2%, 93.3%, and 0.800 for the NIC; and 65.6%, 80%, and 0.720 for the K; 81.3%, 83.3%, and 0.874 for the IC + NIC; 68.8%, 93.3%, and 0.891 for the IC + NIC + K, respectively. The “IC + NIC + K” had the highest diagnostic efficiency for discriminating two types of lung cancers, but with low sensitivity. Whereas, “IC”and “IC + NIC” had the similar lower diagnostic efficiency, but with high sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion The iodine quantification parameters derived from enhanced DE-CT during the VP may be useful for distinguishing lung squamous cell carcinoma from adenocarcinoma.

Patterned functionalization can, on the one hand, open the band gap of graphene and, on the other hand, program demanding designs on graphene. The functionalization technique is essential for graphene‐based nanoarchitectures. A new and highly efficient method was applied to obtain patterned functionalization on graphene by mild fluorination with spatially arranged AgF arrays on the structured substrate. Scanning Raman spectroscopy (SRS) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS) were used to characterize the functionalized materials. For the first time, chemical patterning on the bottom side of graphene was realized. The chemical nature of the patterned functionalization was determined to be the ditopic scenario with fluorine atoms occupying the bottom side and moieties, such as oxygen‐containing groups or hydrogen atoms, binding on the top side, which provides information about the mechanism of the fluorination process. Our strategy can be conceptually extended to pattern other functionalities by using other reactants. Bottom‐side patterned functionalization enables utilization of the top side of a material, thereby opening up the possibilities for applications in graphene‐based devices., Bottoms up! Patterned bottom‐side functionalization of graphene was realized using a 2D substrate patterning method. A very high degree of functionalization and patterned fluorination are demonstrated. Ditopic functionalization is observed with fluorine atoms on the bottom side and moieties, such as oxygen‐containing groups or hydrogen atoms, on the top side.

Nyctinastic leaf movement of Fabaceae is driven by the tiny motor organ pulvinus located at the base of the leaf or leaflet. Despite the increased understanding of the essential role of ELONGATED PETIOLULE1 (ELP1)/PETIOLE LIKE PULVINUS (PLP) orthologs in determining pulvinus identity in legumes, key regulatory components and molecular mechanisms underlying this movement remain largely unclear. Here, we used WT pulvinus and the equivalent tissue in the elp1 mutant to carry out transcriptome and proteome experiments. The omics data indicated that there are multiple cell biological processes altered at the gene expression and protein abundance level during the pulvinus development. In addition, comparative analysis of different leaf tissues provided clues to illuminate the possible common primordium between pulvinus and petiole, as well as the function of ELP1. Furthermore, the auxin pathway, cell wall composition and chloroplast distribution were altered in elp1 mutants, verifying their important roles in pulvinus development. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the motor organ of the model legume Medicago truncatula and further supplies a rich dataset to facilitate the identification of novel players involved in nyctinastic movement.

Rational design and engineering of top interface layers with combined properties of effective passivation, high thermal‐ and photo‐stability are effective methods to advance the commercialization of perovskite photovoltaics. Here, an innovative anode interface combination is developed based on alcohol‐dispersed poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT) nanoparticles as the hole transport material and chlorobenzene‐dissolved trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as the passivation agent. It is shown that instead of the commonly used 2D passivation ligands, TOPO‐passivated perovskite films exhibit greatly improved thermal stability. Furthermore, the passivation contributes to an enhanced carrier lifetime and reduced surface trap density, yielding an improvement in the quasi‐fermi‐level splitting of 57 meV. To maintain surface passivation during solution processing of further layers, it is necessary to develop a hole transport layer that can be processed from orthogonal solvents. P3HT nanoparticles formulated in alcoholic media fully meet this requirement, clearly benefitting from their high vertical conductivity and extremely low contact resistance with carbon electrodes. Based on this configuration, device efficiency of up to 18.4% is demonstrated for perovskite solar cells with fully solution‐processed carbon electrodes, along with significantly improved device stability and reproducibility.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures composing of organic molecules with inorganic 2D crystals open the door to fabricate various promising hybrid devices. Here, a fully ordered organic self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) to construct hybrid organic–inorganic vdW heterojunction phototransistors for highly sensitive light detection is used. The heterojunctions, formed by layering MoS2 monolayer crystals onto organic [12‐(benzo[b]benzo[4,5]thieno[2,3‐d]thiophen‐2‐yl)dodecyl)]phosphonic acid SAM, are characterized by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as Kelvin probe force microscopy. Remarkably, this vdW heterojunction transistor exhibits a superior photoresponsivity of 475 A W−1 and enhanced external quantum efficiency of 1.45 × 105%, as well as an extremely low dark photocurrent in the pA range. This work demonstrates that hybridizing SAM with 2D materials can be a promising strategy for fabricating diversified optoelectronic devices with unique properties.

Anthocyanins and proanthocyanins (PAs) are two end products of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway. They are believed to be synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum and then sequestered into the vacuole. In Arabidopsis thaliana, TRANSPARENT TESTA 19 (TT19) is necessary for both anthocyanin and PA accumulation. Here, we found that MtGSTF7, a homolog of AtTT19, is essential for anthocyanin accumulation but not required for PA accumulation in Medicago truncatula. MtGSTF7 was induced by the anthocyanin regulator LEGUME ANTHOCYANIN PRODUCTION 1 (LAP1), and its tissue expression pattern correlated with anthocyanin deposition in M. truncatula. Tnt1-insertional mutants of MtGSTF7 lost anthocyanin accumulation in vegetative organs, and introducing a genomic fragment of MtGSTF7 could complement the mutant phenotypes. Additionally, the accumulation of anthocyanins induced by LAP1 was significantly reduced in mtgstf7 mutants. Yeast-one-hybridization and dual-luciferase reporter assays revealed that LAP1 could bind to the MtGSTF7 promoter to activate its expression. Ectopic expression of MtGSTF7 in tt19 mutants could rescue their anthocyanin deficiency, but not their PA defect. Furthermore, PA accumulation was not affected in the mtgstf7 mutants. Taken together, our results show that the mechanism of anthocyanin and PA accumulation in M. truncatula is different from that in A. thaliana, and provide a new target gene for engineering anthocyanins in plants.

Limited by the micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) fabrication technology, the in-operation drift of MEMS gyroscope which degrades measurement repeatability, accuracy, and stability has non-stationary wide-band components and a large difference between each power cycle. The drift limits the usability of MEMS gyroscope in a variety of field applications where autonomous and repeatable operation is required over a long time in harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, a novel method is proposed to compensate the drift. At first, an improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition is used to decompose the original signals into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and the threshold de-noising method is adopted to filter the IMFs; then, the de-noised sub-series are reconstructed into training and testing dataset, respectively, and the bagging extreme learning machine-based model has been trained; finally, the compensation signal is predicted by the model with testing dataset, and the desired results can be obtained after compensation. The proposed method has been validated by a 9000-s in-operation experiment of CRG20 by comparing it with a typical method. The experiment demonstrated that the proposed method can enhance generalization performance and can boost compensation accuracy of the model, and the bias instability reduced from 0.0785°/s to 0.0046°/s.

Pure CeO2 and CeO2–MOx (M: Mn, Zr and Ni) catalysts were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and evaluated for the oxidation of toluene. The characterization showed that the specific surface area and the porous texture of catalysts were improved due to the doping of transition metal. Besides, the doping of MOx into ceria contributed to the generation of structural defects, which could contribute to the easier storage and release of surface oxygen. Furthermore, the CeO2–MOx (M: Mn, Zr and Ni) catalysts exhibited higher concentration of Ce3+ and surface adsorbed oxygen than pure CeO2, which could correlate with the generation of oxygen vacancies, resulting in the enhancement of redox properties. Hence, CeO2–MnOx exhibited the best apparent catalytic activity of toluene due to its more Ce3+, structural defects and active oxygen species.

We have proposed and demonstrated a novel thin film deposition technique by transferring the principles of atomic layer deposition (ALD), known with gaseous precursors, towards precursors dissolved in a liquid. The technique can also be considered as a generalization of already established methods such as the ‘layer by layer’ growth or the ‘successive ion layer adsorption and reaction’ (SILAR). 'Solution ALD' (sALD) shares the fundamental properties of standard ‘gas ALD’ (gALD), specially the self-limiting growth and the ability to coat conformally deep pores. It has been already shown that it is possible to transfer standard reactions from gALD to sALD such as TiO2 deposition . However, sALD also offers novel opportunities such as overcoming the need for volatile and thermally robust precursors. To illustrate this, we establish sALD procedures for depositing films of non oxides layers such as Pb-compound deposition, MOF, selenides and sulfides. Those examples highlight how ionic, polar, or high-molecular weight precursors that only exist in the condensed phase are now rendered amenable to being utilized in surface-controlled thin film formation by sALD for depositing materials that would otherwise be more difficult or more expensive to achieve by gALD or hazardous. The deposition was achieved on small (2 cm*1 cm) and large samples (up to 10 cm*10 cm). The ALD behavior has been shown. The influence of the deposition parameters on the morphology, the crystalline structure and the chemical composition has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the nucleation is studied in function of chemical pretreatment to control the growth and allow selective deposition of SnS, SnSe and Sb2Se3. Simple and compound which are the two basic types of leaves are distinguished by the pattern of the distribution of blades on the petiole. Compared to simple leaves comprising a single blade, compound leaves have multiple blade units and exhibit more complex and diverse patterns of organ organization, and the molecular mechanisms underlying their pattern formation are receiving more and more attention in recent years. Studies in model legume Medicago truncatula have led to an improved understanding of the genetic control of the compound leaf patterning. This review is an attempt to summarize the current knowledge about the compound leaf morphogenesis of M. truncatula, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms involved in pattern formation. It also includes some comparisons of the molecular mechanisms between leaf morphogenesis of different model species and offers useful information for the molecular design of legume crops.

Semiconducting self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) represent highly relevant components for the fabrication of organic thin-film electronics because they enable the precise formation of active it-conjugates in terms of orientation and layer thickness. In this work, we demonstrate self-assembled monolayer field-effect transistors (SAMFETs) composed of phosphonic acid oligomers of 3-hexylthiophene (oligothiophenes-OT) with systematic variations of thiophene repeating units (5, 10, and 20). The devices exhibit stable lateral charge transport with increased mobility as a function of thiophene unit counts. Importantly, our work reveals the packing and intermolecular order of varied-chain-length SAMs at the molecular scale via X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and quantitative X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Short oligomers (OT5-PA and OT10-PA) arrange almost perpendicular to the substrate, forming highly ordered SAMs, whereas the long-chain OT20-PA exhibits a folded structure. By tuning the molecular order in the monolayers via the SAM substitution reaction, the OT20-PA devices show a tripling in mobility.

Rational patterning and tailoring of graphene relies on the disclosure of suitable reagents for structuring the target functionalities on the 2D‐carbon network. Here, a series of hypervalent iodine compounds, namely, 1‐chloro‐1,2‐benziodoxol‐3(1H)‐one, 1,3‐dihydro‐1‐hydroxy‐3,3‐dimethyl‐1,2‐benziodoxole, and 3,3‐dimethyl‐1‐(trifluoromethyl)‐1,2‐benziodoxole is reported to be extremely efficient for a diversified graphene patterning. The decomposition of these compounds generates highly reactive Cl, OH, and CF3 radicals exclusively in the irradiated areas, which subsequently attach onto the graphene leading to locally controlled chlorination, hydroxylation, and trifluoromethylation, respectively. This is the first realization of a patterned hydroxylation of graphene, and the degrees of functionalization of the patterned chlorination and trifluoromethylation are both unprecedented. The usage of these mild reagents here is reasonably facile compared to the reported methods using hazardous Cl2 or ICl and allows for sophisticated pattern designs with nanoscale precision, promising for arbitrary nanomanipulation of graphene's properties like hydrophilicity and conductivity by the three distinct functionalities (Cl, OH, and CF3). Moreover, the attachment of functional entities to these highly functionalized graphene nanoarchitectures is fully reversible upon thermal annealing, enabling a full writing/storing/reading/erasing control over the chemical information stored within graphene. This work provides an exciting clue for target 2D functionalization and modulation of graphene by using suitable hypervalent iodine compounds.

Quasi-2D metal-halide perovskites with Ruddlesden−Popper structures have shown promising stability due to the protectiveeffects of the intercalating organic cations. However, a systematic studyof the effect of intercalating organic cations on stability has rarely beenreported. Here we use a high-throughput-robot platform to fabricateover 300 perovskite films and study the effect of cations and theirconcentrations on the thermal stability of perovskite films. We find thatapproximately 20−25 mol % of intercalating organic cations intoMAPbI3 (nominal n = 4/5) can maximize the film stability, whilehigher/lower concentrations lead to inferior stability, which is termedstability bowing in analogy to band-gap bowing. A model with twocompetitive effects of the intercalating organic cation (better protectionvs more defects) is proposed to rationalize this behavior. We anticipatethis work to provide new insights into the stability of quasi-2Dperovskites.

Plant height is a vital agronomic trait that greatly determines crop yields because of the close relationship between plant height and lodging resistance. Legumes play a unique role in the worldwide agriculture, however, little attention has been given to the molecular basis of their height. Here, we characterized the first dwarf mutant mini plant 1 (mnp1) of the model legume plant Medicago truncatula. Our study found that both cell length and the cell number of internodes were reduced in a mnp1 mutant. Using the forward genetic screening and subsequent whole-genome resequencing approach, we cloned the MNP1 gene and found that it encodes a putative copalyl diphosphate synthase (CPS) implicated in the first step of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis. MNP1 was highly homologous to Pisum sativum LS. The subcellular localization showed that MNP1 was located in the chloroplast. Further analysis indicated that GA3 could significantly restore the plant height of mnp1-1, and expression of MNP1 in a cps1 mutant of Arabidopsis partially rescued its mini-plant phenotype, indicating the conservation function of MNP1 in GA biosynthesis. Our results provide valuable information for understanding the genetic regulation of plant height in M. truncatula.

The F-box protein MIO1/SLB1 regulates lateral organ size and pulvinus development by forming part of an SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase to modulate stability of BIG SEEDS1 in Medicago truncatula., The size of leaf and seed organs, determined by the interplay of cell proliferation and expansion, is closely related to the final yield and quality of forage and crops. Yet the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying organ size modulation remain poorly understood, especially in legumes. Here, MINI ORGAN1 (MIO1), which encodes an F-box protein SMALL LEAF AND BUSHY1 (SLB1) recently reported to control lateral branching in Medicago truncatula, was identified as a key regulator of organ size. We show that loss-of-function of MIO1/SLB1 severely reduced organ size. Conversely, plants overexpressing MIO1/SLB1 had enlarged organs. Cellular analysis revealed that MIO1/SLB1 controlled organ size mainly by modulating primary cell proliferation during the early stages of leaf development. Biochemical analysis revealed that MIO1/SLB1 could form part of SKP1/Cullin/F-box (SCF) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, to target BIG SEEDS1 (BS1), a repressor of primary cell division, for degradation. Interestingly, we found that MIO1/SLB1 also played a key role in pulvinus development and leaf movement by modulating cell proliferation of the pulvinus as leaves developed. Our study not only demonstrates a conserved role of MIO1/SLB1 in the control of organ size in legumes, but also sheds light on the novel function of MIO1/SLB1 in leaf movement.

Male sterility is an important tool for plant breeding and hybrid seed production. Male-sterile mutants are largely due to an abnormal development of either the sporophytic or gametophytic anther tissues. Tapetum, a key sporophytic tissue, provides nutrients for pollen development, and its delayed degeneration induces pollen abortion. Numerous bHLH proteins have been documented to participate in the degeneration of the tapetum in angiosperms, but relatively little attention has been given to the evolution of the involved developmental pathways across the phylogeny of land plants. A combination of cellular, molecular, biochemical and evolutionary analyses was used to investigate the male fertility control in Medicago truncatula. We characterized the male-sterile mutant empty anther1 (ean1) and identified EAN1 as a tapetum-specific bHLH transcription factor necessary for tapetum degeneration. Our study uncovered an evolutionarily conserved recruitment of bHLH subfamily II and III(a + c)1 in the regulation of tapetum degeneration. EAN1 belongs to the subfamily II and specifically forms heterodimers with the subfamily III(a + c)1 members, which suggests a heterodimerization mechanism conserved in angiosperms. Our work suggested that the pathway of two tapetal-bHLH subfamilies is conserved in all land plants, and likely was established before the divergence of the spore-producing land plants.

Tuning the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nanophase-separated morphology to enhance the conductivity is a considerable challenge in the field of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, a series of novel aliphatic-aromatic copolymer AEMs were designed by embedding flexible alkyl chains of different lengths into rigid main chain of poly(ether sulfone). Compared to traditional aromatic polymer, the aliphatic-aromatic copolymers had more flexible main chains and longer hydrophobic segments, both of which promoted the nanophase separation and the formation of ionic clusters. Increasing aliphatic chain length made the ionic clusters larger and more interconnected, but too long aliphatic chain led to the formation of smaller ionic clusters because the ionic groups were far away from each other. An optimum length of the aliphatic chain (8 C) existed for the nanophase-separated morphology with the biggest ionic clusters (around 8 nm), with which the membrane showed the highest conductivity. A peak power density of 159 mW cm−2 was obtained for the cell incorporating the 8 C membrane. Based on these, this study reveals a new direction to create a tunable nanophase-separated morphology for high-performance AEMs.

Inadequate hydroxide conductivity of anion exchange membrane (AEM) is one of the obstacles restricting practical application of anion exchange membrane fuel cell. In this work, we report the design, fabrication and properties of AEMs based on bent-twisted non-coplanar block copolymer. The bent-twisted polymer backbone creates high free volume size so that hydroxide ion transport is facilitated. The free-volume effect can also facilitate microphase separation due to enhanced chain segment motion. With the free-volume holes working synergistically with microphase-separation enabled ion channels, the membrane showed a high conductivity (35 mS cm−1 at room temperature) at a relatively low ion exchange capacity (IEC, 1.25 meq g−1); it also exhibited a good dimension stability, the swelling ratio being 4.7% at room temperature and kept virtually unchanged with temperature because of relatively low IEC. A H2/O2 fuel cell employing the fabricated AEM yielded a high power density (262 mW cm−2 at 50 °C). Our work opens up a new route to fabrication of highly conductive AEM with relatively low IEC.

Self‐healing of defects imposed by external stimuli such as high energy radiation is a possibility to sustain the operational lifetime of electronic devices such as radiation detectors. Cs3Bi2Br3I6 polycrystalline wafers are introduced here as novel X‐ray detector material, which not only guarantees a high X‐ray stopping power due to its composition with elements with high atomic numbers, but also outperforms other Bi‐based semiconductors in respect to detector parameters such as detection limit, transient behavior, or dark current. The polycrystalline wafers represent a size scalable technology suitable for future integration in imager devices for medical applications. Most astonishingly, aging of these wafer‐based devices results in an overall improvement of the detector performance—dark currents are reduced, photocurrents are increased, and one of the most problematic properties of X‐ray detectors, the base line drift is reduced by orders of magnitude. These aging induced improvements indicate self‐healing effects which are shown to result from recrystallization. Optimized synthetic conditions also improve the as prepared X‐ray detectors; however, the aged device outperforms all others. Thus, self‐healing acts in Cs3Bi2Br3I6 as an optimization tool, which is certainly not restricted to this single compound, it is expected to be beneficial also for many further polycrystalline ionic semiconductors.

The stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is an important feature of alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which has been extensively studied. However it remains a real challenge due to the harsh working condition. Herein, we developed a novel type of polysulfone-based AEMs with three modified 1,2-dimethylbenzimidazoliums containing different substitutes at C4- and C7-position. The results showed that the introduction of the substitutes could obviously improve the dimensional and alkaline stabilities of the corresponding membranes. The swelling ratios of resultant AEMs were all lower than 10% after water immersion. The membrane with 4,7-dimethoxy-1,2-dimethylbenzimidazolium group exhibited the highest alkaline stability. Only 9.2% loss of hydroxide conductivity was observed after treating the membrane in 1 mol·L−1 KOH solution at 80 °C for 336 h. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) study on the three functional group models showed that the substitutes at C4- and C7-position affected the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of the different 1,2-dimethylbenzimidazolium groups.
