Optical multiplexing is a key technique that enhances the capacity of optical systems by independently modulating various optical parameters to carry distinct information. Among these parameters, wavelength, polarization, and angle are the primary ones for multiplexing in plane waves with uniform cross-sectional distribution. While metasurfaces have recently emerged as a powerful platform for optical multiplexing, they are typically restricted to partial parameter multiplexing and exhibit a low number of multiplexing channels. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the full-parameter multiplexing of polarization, wavelength, and angle, achieving hundreds of distinct multiplexing channels,the largest reported to date. Our design utilizes a gradient-based optimization algorithm to enable high-efficiency performance and independent functionalities with minimal cross-talk among channels. This approach represents a significant advancement in metasurface design and optical multiplexing, with potential applications in complex and dynamic optical systems.

Polarization and wavelength multiplexing are the two most widely employed techniques to improve the capacity in the metasurfaces. Existing works have pushed each technique to its individual limits. For example, the polarization multiplexing channels working at a single wavelength have been significantly increased by using noise engineering. However, it is still challenging to achieve the multiplexing limits of wavelength and polarization simultaneously. Besides, such multiplexing methods suffer from computational inefficiencies, hindering their application in tasks like image recognition that require extensive training computation. In this work, we introduce a gradient-based optimization algorithm using deep neural network (DNN) to achieve the limits of both polarization and wavelength multiplexing with high computational efficiency. We experimentally demonstrate this capability, achieving a record-breaking capacity of 15 holographic images across five wavelengths and the maximum of three independent polarization channels, as well as 18 holographic images across three wavelengths and six corelated polarization channels. Moreover, leveraging the high computational efficiency of our DNN-based method, which is well-suited for processing large datasets, we implement large-scale image recognition tasks across 36 classes encoded in a record of nine multiplexed channels (three wavelengths * three polarizations), achieving 96% classification accuracy in calculations and 91.5% in experiments. This work sets a new benchmark for high-capacity multiplexing with metasurfaces and demonstrates the power of gradient-based inverse design for realizing multi-functional optical elements.

Optical imaging of the intensity, phase and polarization distributions of optical field is fundamental to numerous applications. Traditional methods rely on bulky optical components and require multiple measurements. Recently, metasurface-based (MS-based) imaging strategies have emerged as a promising solution to address these challenges. However, they have been primarily limited to capturing partial information of the three parameters, tailored to specific optical fields, which poses challenges when addressing with arbitrary field distributions and achieving three-parameter imaging. In this study, we introduce a MS-based approach for single-shot optical imaging that simultaneously captures all the three parameters of optical fields with arbitrary intensity, phase, and polarization distributions. We experimentally validate the versatility of our method by conducting imaging of various types of optical fields with arbitrary well-defined distributions. The strategy presented in our work is expected to open up promising avenues for diverse applications, including imaging, optical communications, and beyond.

To achieve optoelectronic devices with high resolution and efficiency, there is a pressing need for optical structural units that possess an ultrasmall footprint yet exhibit strong controllability in both the frequency and spatial domains. For dielectric nanoparticles, the overlap of electric and magnetic dipole moments can scatter light completely forward or backward, which is called Kerker theory. This effect can expand to any multipoles and any directions, re-named as generalized Kerker effect, and realize controllable light manipulation at full space and full spectrum using well-designed dielectric structures. However, the complex situations of multipole couplings make it difficult to achieve structural design. Here, generative artificial intelligence (AI) is utilized to facilitate multi-objective-oriented structural design, wherein we leverage the concept of "combined spectra" that consider both spectra and direction ratios as labels. The proposed generative adversarial network (GAN) is named as DDGAN (double-discriminator GAN) which discriminates both images and spectral labels. Using trained networks, we achieve the simultaneous design for scattering color and directivities, RGB color routers, as well as narrowband light routers. Notably, all generated structures possess a footprint less than 600x600 nm indicating their potential applications in optoelectronic devices with ultrahigh resolution.

The delivery of optical signals from an external light source to a nanoscale waveguide is highly important for the development of nanophotonic circuits. However, the efficient coupling of external light energy into nanophotonic components is difficult and still remains a challenge. Herein, we use an external silica nanofiber to light up an organic-inorganic hybrid nano-waveguide, namely a system composed of a polymer filament doped with MoS$_{2}$ quantum dots. Nanofiber-excited nano-waveguides in a crossed geometry are found to asymmetrically couple excitation signals along two opposite directions, with different energy dissipation resulting in different colors of the light emitted by MoS$_{2}$ quantum dots and collected from the waveguide terminals. Interestingly, rainbow-like light in the hybrid waveguide is achieved by three-in-one mixing of red, green, and blue components. Metasurfaces, artificial 2D structures, have been widely used for the design of various functionalities in optics. Jones matrix, a 2*2 matrix with eight parameters, provides the most complete characterization of the metasurface structures in linear optics, and the number of free parameters (i.e., degrees of freedom, DOFs) in the Jones matrix determines the limit to what functionalities we can realize. Great efforts have been made to continuously expand the number of DOFs, and a maximal number of six has been achieved recently. However, the realization of 'holy grail' goal with eight DOFs (full free parameters) has been proven as a great challenge so far. Here, we show that by cascading two layer metasurfaces and utilizing the gradient descent optimization algorithm, a spatially varying Jones matrix with eight DOFs is constructed and verified numerically and experimentally in optical frequencies. Metasurfaces are planar structures that can manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization (APP) of light at subwavelength scale. Although various functionalities have been proposed based on metasurface, a most general optical control, i.e., independent complex-amplitude (amplitude and phase) control of arbitrary two orthogonal states of polarizations, has not yet been realized. Such level of optical control can not only cover the various functionalities realized previously, but also enable new functionalities that are not feasible before. Here, we propose a single-layer dielectric metasurface to realize this goal and experimentally demonstrate several advanced functionalities, such as two independent full-color printing images under arbitrary elliptically orthogonal polarizations and dual sets of printing-hologram integrations. Multifocal lens, which focus incident light at multiple foci, are widely used in imaging systems and optical communications. However, for the traditional design strategy, it combines several lenses that have different focal points into a planar integrated unit, resulting a low imaging quality due to the high background noise. Here, we propose two kinds of multifocal metalens with Au nanoslits arranged in an elliptical and a hyperbolic shape, which are able to effectively focus incident light at all of the foci with constructive interference, and extremely decrease the background noise and improve the lens imaging performance at the nanoscale. We further demonstrate that, the proposed metalens can possess a broadband operation wavelength changed from 600 nm to 900 nm, with its dual-polarity actively controlled by the incident circular polarization lights. With great agreement between the experimental and simulation results, our proposed conic-shaped metalens provides a significant potential for the future integrated nanophotonic device., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

Ellipse and hyperbola are two well-known curves in mathematics with numerous applications in various fields, but their properties and inherent differences in spin optics are less understood. Here, we investigate the peculiar optical spin properties of the two curves and establish a connection between their foci and the spin states of incident light. We show that the optical spin Hall effect is the intrinsic optical spin property of ellipse, where photons with different spin states can be exactly separated to each of its two foci. While a hyperbola exhibits optical spin-selective effect, where only photons with one particular spin state can be accumulated at its foci. These properties are then experimentally demonstrated in near field by arranging nanoslits in conic shape. Based on the spin properties of the curves, we design spin-based plasmonic devices with various functionalities.
