43. The eruption of Kuwae, Vanuatu, and its effects on the global climate

Abstract

A volcanic eruption occurred in 1458 CE, causing climate perturbations worldwide. This eruption occurred immediately before one of the peak periods of the Little Ice Age and represents one of the three biggest sulphur emitting volcanic eruptions of the last 1000 years. Its source remains highly debated to this day, but the submarine caldera volcano of Kuwae, Vanuatu, has been suggested as source volcano for the last 30 years.Here, we present a comprehensive study characterizing the 15th century eruption of Kuwae. Locally, it is well known as the source of a major event, causing devastation to the islands surrounding it and causing abandonment of the area for several decades. In order to test the link between Kuwae and the global climate catastrophe, we present physical and chemical characteristics of proximal deposits (incl. estimating emitted sulphur volumes), results of a recent bathymetric study of the caldera (revealing its structure and potential eruptive volume), and its cultural impact, preserved in cultural layers and oral history. We will also use radiocarbon analysis to gain a more precise eruptive date for the 15th century eruption of the Kuwae caldera.Through our at-source characterization of the Kuwae eruption, we will be able to identify future volcanic hazards and either establish it as the source of the 1458/1459 CE climate perturbation, or rule it out as a source candidate., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

49. Frontier Archaeology: Excavating Huli Colonization of the Lower Tagali Valley, Papua New Guinea.

Abstract

Archaeological investigations have documented an ideological and occupied frontier in the Lower Tagali Valley along the southern margins of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Open-area excavations document two types of house structure associated with Huli occupation of the Lower Tagali Valley landscape, a women's house (wandia) and a lodge and ceremonial complex associated with a bachelor cult (ibagiyaanda). Excavation revealed the complete floor plan of the women's house site and multiple structural elements of the ceremonial complex. Radiocarbon dating provides a chronology for both sites that accords with genealogical histories for the colonization of this landscape by Huli during the early nineteenth century, or approximately eight generations ago. These archaeological findings are consistent with the strategies still employed today by Huli in the initial ideological incorporation of new territory and anchoring of expansionary claims through subsequent settlement and cultivation.
