The article focuses on the use of cotton white gloves in handling historical books and paper-based collections. The authors conducted a study on the effect of wearing white gloves to the books. According to her, routine hand washing is best suited to prevent dirt from accumulating the paper materials as compared with gloves. The cotton gloves are not suited for book handling because of their properties like: porous fabric, raw fiber, which contain fats and alkanes and they absorb sweat. These properties are not good for the book. The authors further stated that wearing gloves or not, the handler may still unknowingly damage the manuscripts. The white cotton gloves do not provide assurance that they will protect the books and papers from dirt and sweat. But instead, they will make the materials more prone to impairment.

It states that good aging in a book paper is its ability to retain its original qualities, whether good or bad, over time and space, while poor aging is the opposite. Aging and age have much in common, but whereas a rough calculation of age may be a fact known about a paper, aging is not as easily quantified or qualified. The article focuses on an examination of the wove paper used by U.S. publisher Isaiah Thomas to print a 1795 edition of the book "Elegiac Sonnets," by Charlotte Smith. A copy of the book owned by the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan has a half-leather binding with marbled paper sides. Four of the five plates in the book were printed on wove paper. The paper used for the second copy owned by the library features papermaker's tears, wood debris, a few colored threads and iron specks.

The article analyzes the composition of the Whatman papers that were used for "The Birds of America." The fiber content, gelatin, alum, rosin, and pH tests were conducted on paper samples from four of the plate volumes of the Syracuse University's set. According to the article, the results of the tests prove that the paper is acidic. However, most of the book pages do not indicate serious deterioration of the paper quality. This is maybe due to the buffering qualities of gelatin sizing which enable the handmade papers to withstand acidity arising from internal and external conditions such as air pollution, humidity and temperature levels, the author says.

Further, it cites Hollingworth Mill, who has been using the J Whatman countermark and has been a part of Turkey Mill before.
