Abstract Background Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is an inflammatory disease characterized by increased reactive oxygen species. Diets rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may be linked to a reduced risk of developing HT. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) with HT in Iranian adults. Methods The study was a hospital-based case-control study conducted on 230 participants (115 cases and 115 controls). Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The FFQ data were used to calculate DII and DTAC scores. Anthropometric measurements, thyroid function, and antibody tests were evaluated using standard methods. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed in both raw and adjusted models to determine the association between DII and DTAC scores with HT. Results The average age of the participants was 39.76 ± 9.52 years. The mean body mass index in the case and control groups was 28.03 ± 6.32 and 26.43 ± 5.13 (kg/m2), respectively (P = 0.036). Abstract Objective The aim of the present study was the association between the relationship between Dietary Quality Index-International (DQI-I) and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and the urinary levels of F2alpha-isoprostane (F2a-IP) and 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was investigated as indicators of oxidative stress. Results Based on HEI (low, moderate, and good), the diet quality of both groups was classified as moderate. In all participants, HEI (β=-0.29; P = 0.04) and DQI-I (β=-0.46; P = 0.005) were inversely associated with 8-OHdG. Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between HEI (mean β=-3.53; P = 0.04) and DQI-I (mean β=-5.53; P = 0.004) with F2a-IP. The quality of the footballers’ diet was higher than that of the control group. Following a high-quality diet, which is rich in antioxidants, is likely to effectively reduce oxidative stress.

Abstract Background Preeclampsia is a significant complication that occurs during the second half of pregnancy. Recent studies have indicated that dietary factors play a crucial role in the development of preeclampsia. The Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) and Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) are appropriate indices for assessing the quality of foods, meals, and diets. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between DQI-I, DDS, and preeclampsia. Methods This study utilized a case-control design. A total of 90 newly diagnosed preeclampsia cases and 90 healthy controls were included from a referral hospital in Tabriz, Iran. DQI-I and DDS were calculated based on information obtained from a reliable Food Frequency Questionnaire consisting of 168 food items, which assessed participants’ usual diet. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, body mass index, education, family history of preeclampsia, and total energy intake was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs). Results The mean age and pre-pregnancy body mass index of the participants were: 27.14 ± 4.40 years and 26.09 ± 3.33 kg/m2, respectively. After adjusting for various confounders, we found significant inverse association between the risk of developing preeclampsia and both DQI-I and DDS. Abstract Proper nutrition plays a vital role in modulating oxidative status. There is an increasing popularity of plant-based dietary patterns among athletes. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the plant-based diet index (PDI) score among male footballers and their non-athlete controls, as well as its relationship with oxidative biomarkers by evaluating the urinary excretion of F2alpha-isoprostane (F2a-IP) and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). A group of footballers (n = 45) and a healthy non-athlete group (n = 45) were selected. The two groups were matched based on body mass index (BMI) and age. The mean (standard deviation (SD)) age of the subjects was 22.88 (2.41) years, and their BMI was 22.08 (1.35) kg/m2. Background: Childhood overweight/obesity is increasing worldwide. There is evidence on the role of dietary patterns (DPs) and sleep quality on body weight in adults, but studies on the association of major DPs, sleep quality and overweight/obesity among school-age children are scarce, so the present study was done to shade a light on the subject. Methods: This study was a case-control study, conducted on school-age (7-13 years) children. Cases were healthy children who had a body mass index (BMI) percentile of≥85th for age and sex (n=102). Sex-matched children with a BMI percentile between 5th and 85th were considered as control group (n=102). Dietary data were collected using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the association between DPs, sleep quality, and overweight/obesity. Results: Three DPs were identified: "Low-energy healthy", "High-energy healthy" and "Unhealthy diet". Abstract Background In this study, we aimed to illustrate the association between the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Dietary Quality Index (DQI) with bone mineral density (BMD) among postmenopausal Iranian women with osteoporosis compared to the healthy control. Methods In the current case-control study, 131 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and 131 healthy postmenopausal women participated. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess the lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck BMD. The subjects completed a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and then HEI and DQI were calculated based on the FFQ data. Crude and adjusted multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relation between HEI and DQI with the odds of the femoral and lumbar BMD. Results According to the results, participants in the last tertile of HEI were more likely to have higher femoral and lumbar BMD in the crude model (odds ratio (OR) = 0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.20–0.71 and OR = 0.20; 95% CI: 0.10–0.40, respectively) and also in the adjusted model (OR = 0.40; 95% CI: 0.20–0.78 and OR = 0.20; 95% CI: 0.10–0.41, respectively). Also, in terms of DQI-I, participants in the last tertile were more likely to have higher femoral and lumbar BMD in the crude model (OR = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.12–0.45 and OR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.15–0.55, respectively) and also in the adjusted model (OR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.14–0.58 and OR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.17–0.67, respectively). Conclusions The results of the current study supported the hypothesis that high-quality diets with healthy patterns can be clinically effective in maintaining bone health. Thus, recommendations regarding the consumption of nutrient-rich food groups in a healthy diet can serve as a practical non-pharmacological strategy against osteoporosis.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent disease with metabolic consequences. Lower levels of adiponectin and higher levels of leptin were reported in T2DM. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of menaquinone-7 (MK-7) supplementation on adiponectin and leptin in overweight/obese T2DM patients. Methods: Sixty men and women with T2DM and 27 ≤ body mass index < 35 kg/m2 , participated in this double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial for 12 weeks. The subjects were allocated into intervention (200 µg/day MK-7) or placebo groups. Three-day food records, anthropometrics and physical activity were assessed and fasting blood samples were collected at the pre- and post-intervention. Serum adiponectin, leptin, fasting blood sugar (FBS) and fasting insulin (FI) were measured and adiponectin to leptin ratio (A/L ratio) was calculated. Results: MK-7 decreased fasting blood sugar (P: 0.018) and fasting insulin (P: 0.012), according to a within group analysis of the 45 patients who finished the research. Fasting blood sugar (P: 0.024) and leptin levels (P: 0.032) were lower in the MK-7 group, but there were no significant changes between the groups in terms of adiponectin or the adiponectin to leptin (A/L) ratio. Conclusion: Current study showed that MK-7 supplementation could lead to significant reduction in leptin and FBS, but it has no effect on the adiponectin and A/L ratio in overweight/ obese T2DM patients.

Abstract Background Carbohydrates are the primary energy source in Asian countries, including Iran. An emerging method can be used to measure the quality of carbohydrates, including the carbohydrate quality index (CQI), which includes a variety of components. Low-carbohydrate diet score (LCDS) has been proposed as a new method of scoring micronutrient intake that could provide a reasonable explanation for the link between diet and the risk of chronic diseases. Objective This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CQI, LCDS, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), insulin load (IL), and insulin index (II) with bone mass density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Method In this case–control study, 131 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis/osteopenia and 131 healthy postmenopausal women aged 45–65 participated. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) method measured the BMD of the lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. Logistic regression were used to evaluate the relation between GI, GL, II, IL, CQI, and LCDS with BMD. Results Diets with higher GI increased the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis, but LCDS and CQI decreased the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Conclusion These findings suggest that a higher intake of fruits and vegetables and receiving various dietary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds may be a useful way to prevent osteopenia in Iranian women.

Abstract Aim To find the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and body composition in physical education students. Methods This study was carried out on 207 students of both genders aged 18–25 years. DAL was calculated based on potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) methods. Anthropometric indices were measured. Bioelectric impedance was used to assess body composition and other related items. Results The mean score of NEAP and PRAL was 80.18 ± 31.30 and 33.94 ± 22.11, respectively. The mean weight and fat mass of subjects were 64.05 ± 9.72 kg and 20.28 ± 0.67 kg, respectively. Participants in the highest tertile of PRAL had a higher weight (64.56 ± 1.14 kg) in comparison with participants in the lowest tertile (61.65 ± 1.19 kg) (P = 0.027). After adjusting for confounders, a significant positive association was found between NEAP score and hip circumference (β = 0.206, P = 0.039), body mass index (β = 0.214, P = 0.031), fat mass (β = 0.218, P = 0.001) and body adiposity index (β = 0.182, P = 0.037). Furthermore, a statistically significant negative association was observed between total body water and NEAP score (β = − 0.217, P = 0.001) and the percentage of fat-free mass and NEAP (β = − 0.229, P = 0.001). Conclusion Individuals with a higher DAL score may have a higher weight, fat mass and hip circumference and a lower fat-free mass. In addition, there might be an association between DAL and obesity.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common disorder that is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and chronic inflammation, which also have a reinforcing effect on each other. The present research studied the effects of menaquinone (MK-7) supplementation on serum dp-ucMGP (dephospho uncarboxylated Matrix Gla Protein), PIVKAII (Prothrombin Induced by Vitamin K Absence), inflammatory markers and body composition indices in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods This 12-week double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial allocated 60 T2DM patients equally into a MK-7 (200 mcg/day) group or a placebo group. All patients also received dietary advice at the beginning of study and their dietary intakes were checked using a 3-day food record. The body composition of each patient was also measured and their vitamin K status was assessed using the ELISA method to measure serum dp-ucMGP and PIVKAII. In addition, inflammatory status indices were also measured, including hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein), IL-6 (interleukin-6) and TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha). All measurements were made both before and after the intervention period. Results In total 45 patients completed the trial (MK-7 group = 23 and placebo group = 22). IntroductionThe association between plant-based diet indices and bone mineral density (BMD) of women with osteoporosis have not been studied in Iranian women. This study aimed to evaluate the association between plant-based diet indices and BMD in postmenopausal women with osteopenia/osteoporosis.Materials and methodsThe present research was a case-control study conducted on 131 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis/osteopenia and 131 healthy women. The BMD of the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae was measured by the Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXEA) method. Participants were asked to complete a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). We used three versions of plant-based diet indices, including plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), and unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI). Two different multivariable logistic regression was used for the crude and adjusted model to assess the relationship between PDI, hPDI, and uPDI with odds of femoral and lumbar BMD.ResultsThere was a reverse association between last tertile of hPDI with femoral BMD abnormality in the both adjusted model [Model 1: odds ratio (OR): 0.33; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.19–0.63 and Model 2: OR: 0.30; 95% CI: 0.15–0.58, respectively]. Furthermore, we found a reverse relationship between hPDI with lumbar BMD abnormality in the first adjusted model (OR: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.19–0.67). On the other hand, a negative association was observed in the second and last tertile of hPDI with lumbar BMD abnormality (OR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.24–0.90 and OR: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.17–0.64, respectively). According to the results, the association of femoral BMD abnormality in the last tertile of uPDI compared to the first tertile in the both adjusted models (Model 1: OR: 2.85; 95% CI: 1.52–5.36 and Model 2: OR: 2.63; 95% CI: 1.37–5.06) were significant. Also, we observed a positive relationship between the last tertile of uPDI with lumbar BMD abnormality compared to the lowest tertile in the both adjusted models (Model 1; OR: 4.16; 95% CI: 2.20–7.85, Model 2; OR: 4.23; 95% CI: 2.19–8.19).ConclusionOverall, the findings indicated that in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, a healthy plant-based diet could prevent bone loss, and an unhealthy plant-based diet might have detrimental effects on BMD.

PurposeThe relationship between the inflammatory and antioxidant potential of an athlete's diet and their oxidative biomarkers is an important area of investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the excretion of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and F2alpha-isoprostane (F2a-IP) in the urine of male football players and healthy non-athlete controls. This study also aimed to examine the associations among the dietary inflammatory index (DII), the dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC), and the dietary phytochemical index (PI) with 8-OHdG and F2a-IP.MethodsIn this descriptive-analytical study, 45 male football players and 45 healthy non-athletes, who were individually matched based on age and body mass index (BMI), were recruited from Shiraz City, Iran. Fasted urine samples were analyzed for 8-OHdG and F2a-IP levels. Anthropometric measurements were performed, and body composition was assessed using a body composition analyzer. A valid food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to calculate DII, DTAC, and PI scores. Data analysis was conducted using a generalized estimating equation (GEE) model.ResultsWe found that 8-OHdG (β = −6.96), F2a-IP (β = −82.58), and DII (β = −2.06) were significantly lower, while DTAC (β = 2.37) and PI (β = 0.084) were significantly higher in the football player group compared with the non-athlete group (P < 0.001 for all variables). In all participants, dietary indices were significantly associated with oxidative biomarkers. DII was positively associated with 8-OHdG (β = 2.25; P < 0.001) and F2a-IP (β = 38.34; P < 0.001). Furthermore, negative associations between DTAC (β = −1.42; P < 0.001) and PI (β = −35.37; P < 0.001) with 8-OHdG were found. Moreover, DTAC (β = −17.34; P < 0.001) and PI (β = −428.11; P = 0.003) were negatively associated with F2a-IP.ConclusionThe results of this study highlighted the importance of a healthy diet in reducing oxidative stress among football athletes. The levels of urinary biomarkers for DNA and lipid oxidation were found to be lower in football players compared to non-athletes. This suggests that following an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich diet may help reduce oxidative stress in these individuals.

Background: Nowadays despite conventional methods in colon cancer treatment, targeting vital molecular pathways and induction of various forms of cell death by safe probiotic components like exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are of great importance and are considered as potential therapeutic agents. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of the EPS of L. paracasei on different colon cancer cell lines (SW-480, HT-29, and HCT-116). Methods: For this purpose, several cellular and molecular experiments including MTS assay, DAPI staining, Annexin V/PI assay, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and some important ferroptosis-related assays were performed. Results: Based on the findings, L. paracasei EPS can induce apoptosis confirmed by all apoptosis related assays and could not act through ferroptosis pathways. L. paracasei EPS could hinder the Akt1, mTOR, and Jak-1 mRNAs, and induces apoptosis through down-regulation of the antiapoptotic gene (Bcl-2), up-regulation of pro-apoptotic genes (BAX, caspase-3, 8). Conclusion: The exploited EPS of an indigenous probiotic strain with anticancer potential with low/insignificant cytotoxicity to normal cells is proposed for future applications in molecular targeted therapy of colon cancer treatment. Furthermore, in vivo and clinical trials should be performed to evaluate the applicability of this component besides conventional methods to increase the survival rate of colon cancer patients.

Background: Angiogenesis disturbances are common in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). VitaminE has antiangiogenic properties. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a constellation of social communication problems in addition to unusual and repetitive behaviors. In this review, we aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics, prebiotics or synbiotics on gastrointestinal (GI) and behavioral symptoms of ASD. We searched the relevant literature in several electronic databases. In total, 344 children with ASD were investigated in this review. The results of this review demonstrated significant effects of the intervention with probiotics and prebiotics on all domains of Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) score. There were also different reports about their beneficial effects on the improvement of gastrointestinal symptoms, although a need for more clinical trials with the same doses and types of microorganisms is also highlighted.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a widespread and lethal cancer throughout the world. Nowadays there is considerable debate about the efficacy of conventional methods in CRC treatment. Though targeting vital molecular pathways, as well as induction of various forms of cell death by safe probiotic yeast components are regarded as potential therapeutic modalities against CRC. Hence, here we aimed to investigate the inhibitory role of the EPSs of Kluyveromyces marxianus and Pichia kudriavzevii on different colon cancer cell lines. In this regard, several cellular and molecular experiments were performed. Here, we found that both EPSs can induce apoptosis which were confirmed by DAPI and Annexin V/PI assays. Further, our data showed that the EPSs could not act via ferroptotic pathways, however, they could hinder the AKT-1, mTOR, and JAK-1 pathways, and induce apoptosis. Therefore, the probiotic yeast EPSs present beneficial effects and may provide as a novel molecular-targeted therapeutics for combating CRC.

Colorectal cancer is the most common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract and it seems the colonic microbiota plays a significant role in the aetiology of colorectal cancer because it can influence many aspects of intestinal tract health including its physiology, metabolism, development, and immune homeostasis. Hence, all factors modulating the gut microflora and their metabolism are very interesting in cancer prevention. Probiotic bacteria have been examined for anti-cancer effects and different mechanisms were suggested about their anti-tumour functions. This study reviewed some of the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms of probiotics such as influencing intestinal microbial composition and pathogenic bacteria, the production of biological substance like short chain fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, inactivation of carcinogenic compounds especially those derived from food, improvement of intestinal barrier function, modulation of immune responses, apoptosis and anti-proliferative effects and antioxidant function.

Background: There are few studies on the vitamin D status in preeclamptic women. The objective of this case-control study was to determine vitamin D status, in preeclamptic women and compare it with that of healthy pregnant controls. Methods: Forty preeclamptic women, aged 18 to 45yr and forty age- and pregnancy weight-matched healthy controls participated in the study. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were meas­ured and its levels of 90 nanogram per milliliter (ng/ml) were considered as vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, sufficiency, and toxicity, respectively. Results: Sixty and forty percent of preeclamptic women were vitamin D deficient and insufficient, while in the control group they were 10% and 90%, respectively. No significant difference was found in the median intake of vitamin D between preeclamptic and non preeclamptic women (1.45 and 1.20µg/day respectively), but serum 25(OH)D concentration was significantly lower in preeclamptic cases compared to controls (10.09 ± 6.66 and 15.73 ± 5.85ng /ml respectively, P= 0.002). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is common among preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic pregnant women in the north-west of Iran. Preeclampsia can cause decreasing of serum level of 25(OH)D.

Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women. It may involve an impairment in physiologic regulation of leptin and ghrelin. There is limited, controversial data on the relation of dietary components with leptin and ghrelin in PCOS, so the current study has been conducted to explore the effects of different macronutrients on serum levels of leptin and ghrelin in PCOS and healthy subjects. Materials and Methods In this case-control study, we randomly choose 30 PCOS pa- tients and 30 healthy age and body mass index (BMI) matched controls. Intake of macronutrients [protein, total fat, saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), carbohydrate, dietary fiber] and energy were assessed using 3-day, 24-hour food recall and food frequency questionnaires (FFQ). Fasting hormonal status was measured for each participant. Results PCOS women had higher levels of serum leptin, insulin, testosterone, and luteinizing hormone (LH), whereas sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) was lower compared to healthy women. There was no significant difference in mean ghrelin concentrations between the groups. Among PCOS women, independent of BMI and total energy intake, we observed an inverse association between leptin concentration and total dietary fat (β=-0.16, P < 0.05) and saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake (β=-0.58, P < 0.05). This relationship was not seen in the healthy subjects. There was no significant association between ghrelin and macronutrients in PCOS and healthy participants. Conclusion Certain habitual dietary components such as fat and SFA may decrease serum leptin, whereas ghrelin is not influenced by these in PCOS women. More studies are needed to better clarify the effects of dietary macronutrients on serum leptin and ghrelin.

Background and Objectives: Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is considered as a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory functions. Moreover, a number of studies have revealed its lipid lowering properties. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effect of ALA on serum lipids in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who have high mortality rate mainly due to accelerated atherosclerosis. Materials and Methods: In the present study a total of 70 RA patients were randomly assigned into two groups (1:1) to receive either ALA (1200 mg/day) or placebo for 8 weeks. Fasting blood samples were obtained before and after the intervention to analyze serum lipid profile including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Background and Objectives: Considering the high prevalence of diabetes and the important role of insulin resistance and inflammation in type 2 diabetes pathogenesis and its resulted cardiovascular diseases, the present study was conducted with the objective of investigating the effect of oligofructose-enriched inulin on the levels of glycemic indices and inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: In this clinical trial, 52 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to two groups. The subjects of experimental group (n=27) received 10g oligofructose-enriched inulin and the control group (n=25) 10g maltodextrin for 8 weeks. Dietary intakes, anthropometric measurements, glycemic indices and inflammation were measured at the baseline and at the end of the study. Statistical analysis was done using paired and independent t-tests, and analysis of covariance for comparison of quantitative variables. Results: In this study, a significant decrease was observed in fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, IL-6 and TNF-α in oligofructose-enriched inulin group compared to the maltodextrin group. Decreases in HOMA-IR, QUICKI, hs-CRP were not significant in oligofructose-enriched inulin compared to maltodextrin group. Conclusion: The results revealed that oligofructose-enriched inulin supplementation can improve glycemic indices and inflammation in women with type 2 diabetes.

Background: The effect of high-legume hypocaloric diet on metabolic features in women is unclear. This study provided an opportunity to find effects of high-legume diet on metabolic features in women who consumed high legumes at pre-study period. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial after 2 weeks of a run-in period on an isocaloric diet, 42 premenopausal women with central obesity were randomly assigned into two groups: (1) Hypocaloric diet enriched in legumes (HDEL) and (2) hypocaloric diet without legumes (HDWL) for 6 weeks. The following variables were assessed before intervention and 3 and 6 weeks after its beginning: Waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting serum concentrations of triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, homeostasis model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). We used multifactor model of nested multivariate analysis of variance repeated measurements and t-test for statistical analysis. Results: HDEL and HDWL significantly reduced the WC. HDEL significantly reduced the SBP and TG. Both HDEL and HDWL significantly increased fasting concentration of insulin and HOMA-IR after 3 weeks, but their significant effects on insulin disappeared after 6 weeks and HDEL returned HOMA-IR to basal levels in the subsequent 3 weeks. In HDEL group percent of decrease in AST and ALT between 3 rd and 6 th weeks was significant. In HDWL group percent of increase in SBP, DBP, FBS and TG between 3 rd and 6 th weeks was significant. Conclusions: The study indicated beneficial effects of hypocaloric legumes on metabolic features.

Background: Malnutrition and depression are the common health problems in elderly population. Poor nutrition might have a strong effect on the incidence of depression. The aims of this study were to assess the nutritional and depression status and the possibly relationship between these variables in the urban freeliving elderly in Tabriz, northwestern Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 184 elderly people (male=97; female=87) with age 60 years or elder in 2012. All subjects entered to the study voluntarily from those attending to daily care centers for elderly people. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool and Geriatric Depression Score (GDS) were used to evaluate nutritional status and depression scores, respectively. Continuous variables were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD) and qualitative data were presented as frequency (percent). Spearman’s correlation was employed to determine the relationship between variables. Results: Up to 50% of subjects had poor nutrition status. Background & Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia together with biochemical alterations of lipid profile, insulin resistance and inflammation . Considering the high prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidemia and inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of inulin on lipid profile, inflammation and blood pressure in women with type 2 diabetes. Methods: In this controlled, randomized clinical trial, 49 women with type 2 diabetes (fiber intake 0.04 ). Changes in diastolic blood pressures, LDL-c and HDL-c were not significant in inulin group compared with the maltodextrin group. A significant decrease in systolic, diastolic blood pressures, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-c, hs-CRP and significant increase in HDL-c were observed in inulin group compared to baseline. Conclusions: Inulin supplementation may improve lipid profile, hs-CRP and blood pressure in women with type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: This study was conducted to assess the nutritional status in Iranian major depres-sive disorder patients. We also determined the relationship between nutrients intake with depres-sion severity.Methods: Seventy major depressive patients were selected randomly from outpatient depressive subjects, referred to Razi Psychiatry Hospital in Tabriz, Iran in 2007. Dietary intakes were rec-orded and compared with dietary reference intakes (DRIs). Definition of the disease and its se-verity were according to DSM-IV-TR and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, respectively. Nu-tritionist III program, Chi-square, correlation and t-test were used for data analyses. Demo-graphic, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed using SPSS software for windows (ver-sion13.0).Results: According to dietary analysis, 11.4% and 55% of patients had dietary protein and energy deficiency, respectively. 97.1% and 95.7% of patients had less folate and B12 intakes than recom-mended dietary allowances. The mean (Mean ± SD) for plasma folate and B12 was 5.18±6.11 ng/ml and 389.05±346.9 pg/ml, respectively. Low plasma folate and B12 was observed in 51.4% and 50.0 % of patients, respectively. There was no significant relationship between blood folate and B12 levels with depression severity. Similarly, nutrients intake had no effect on depression se-verity.Conclusions: Low plasma concentrations and low dietary intakes of folate and B12 are common among Tabrizian depressive patients. It seems that nutritional intervention for increasing folate and vitamin B12 intake must be considered as health promotive and preventative program for pa-tients suffering from depression disorders.

Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients are more prone to abnormal production of some regulatory peptides. In these patients, studies on the serum levels of leptin and ghrelin are controversial. This study aims to investigate serum levels of leptin and ghrelin and their correlation with metabolic and endocrine indices in PCOS. Materials and Methods This case-control study was conducted on 60 women; 30 with PCOS and 30 healthy women whose age and body mass index (BMI) were matched and who were referred to Alzahra Hospital, Tabriz, Iran. Serum levels of leptin, ghrelin, insulin, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and testosterone were measured. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. Descriptive statistics and correlations were performed using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. Results In PCOS women, serum levels of leptin, insulin, HOMA-IR, testosterone, LH, and LH/FSH were significantly higher, while SHBG was lower than in healthy women. Ghrelin and FSH were similar in both groups. Serum levels of leptin correlated with BMI (r=0.85, p < 0.001), waist to hip ratio (WHR) (r=0.55, p < 0.01), insulin levels (r=0.85, p < 0.001) and HOMA-IR (r=0.67, p < 0.01), while ghrelin levels had an inverse association with testosterone (r=-0.32, p=0.04). Conclusion The results showed increased leptin levels while ghrelin remained unchanged in PCOS patients. In PCOS patients, leptin positively correlated with BMI, WHR, insulin, and insulin resistance, while ghrelin was only associated with serum testosterone levels.

Background: As breast milk micronutrients content are essential for health and growth of the infants, this study was conducted to determine the breast milk zinc, copper and iron concen-trations and their possible correlations with maternal nutritional status, dietary intakes as well as socioeconomic status.Methods: Breast milk samples and information on maternal anthropometric characteristics and dietary intake were collected from 90 Iranian lactating women with 3 different socioeco-nomic status who exclusively breastfed their infants. Concentrations of trace elements were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Nutritionist III program, Multiple Re-gression and ANOVA test were used for data analyses.Results: The mean milk zinc, copper, and iron concentrations were 1.93 ± 0.71, 0.58 ± 0.32, and 0.81 ± 0.2 mg/l, respectively. Background: Disordered eating attitudes are contributing factors to the development of eatingdisorders. Adolescent girls are at high risk for eating diseases. In Iran, there is few data onthe subject, especially in Azarian adolescent girls, so we did this study for assessing disorderedeating attitudes and their correlates among Iranian Azarbaijani high school girls.Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 1887 high school girls were selected. Eating AttitudeTest-26 (EAT-26) and socio economical questionnaires were used. The EAT-26 score of 20or higher defined as disordered eating attitudes. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Programfor Social Sciences, by using from descriptive and analytical statistics.Results: Reliability and validity of the translated EAT-26 were 0.80, 0.76, respectively. Instudied subjects, mean (SD) of EAT-26 was 11.71(8.48). Totally, 16.7% (C.I with 95%: 15.1-18.3%) of students had disordered eating attitudes. About half of the participants were unhappywith their body weight and considered themselves as obese. Mean of EAT-26 washigher in this group. Groups, who intent to weight loss, were smoker, and who had age ofmenarche less than 11 years, also had higher EAT-26 scores. Parent’s literacy or job, birthorder, family size or income and house ownership had not any significant effect on EAT-26score.Conclusions: Persian version of EAT-26 has good reliability and validity for assessing disorderedeating attitudes in Azarian girl adolescents. Prevalence of disordered eating attitudesamong Azarian adolescent girls are in the range of some studies, but are less than Arabiancountries, and some European ones. In adolescent girls, body weight dissatisfaction, smokingand early menarche has important role in eating attitudes.

The association between Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and concentration of folate or homocysteine are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of HP infection on folate and homocysteine concentrations in patients infected with HP and healthy participants. We also assessed dietary intakes of folate, vitamins B6 and B12 in two groups. In this case-control study, 44 participants with HP-infection and 46 healthy controls were studied. Participants were recruited from those referred to the central laboratory of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Blood samples were collected to determine serum folate and homocysteine levels. The presence of both IgG and IgA in serum was considered as HP positive. Dietary intakes were assessed in all participants by 24-hour dietary recalls by trained interviewers for three days. The mean concentration of serum folate was significantly lower in HP-positive patients than in controls (8.49 nmol/L vs. 10.95 nmol/L, respectively; P=0.01). Although the mean concentration of serum homocysteine differed between groups, statistical significance was missed (HP infected patients: 9.35 µmol/L; healthy participants: 8.96 µmol/L; P=0.064). Macro- and micronutrient intakes showed no significant difference between participants with and without HP infection. In logistic regression models, there was a negative correlation between folate concentration and HP infection even after controlling for confounding factors (OR=0.82; CI95%=0.79-0.97). In this study, authors showed that a negative association presents between HP infection and serum folate concentrations, but the homocysteine status was not differed significantly between HP-positive and HP-negative participants.
