Microscopic observation correlated with chemical–mineralogical characterization was performed on pigment samples from "Abrigo del Lince" rock art site (V-IV millennium BC), in order to provide contributions to the study of prehistoric schematic art on granite in the province of Badajoz (Spain). The research objectives include the understanding of technological and cultural aspects, as well as of conservation and deterioration issues related to the pictographs. The multi-analytical approach encompasses the integration of microscopic observation, SEM–EDS analysis, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and ATR-FTIR and allowed to achieve a multispectral overview of the samples and to describe their varied composition and the alteration pattern which connects them. The main phases overlying the granitic bedrock and involved in this sequence are as follows: hematite, whewellite, and gypsum. While hematite could be stratigraphically considered the most ancient layer and assigned to the use of red ochre as a pigment, whewellite and gypsum are the main constituent of the alteration layer which forms a patina over the pictographs, due to weathering processes. Finally, the role of biofilms in rock art conservation is discussed, suggesting that, especially for what concern thin and homogenous layers of oxalates, their presence should not be necessarily considered an issue. Conforme a las tres violencias ejercidas contra la figura republicana durante la guerra en España (1936-1939), el fotoperiodismo desarrolló una contranarrativa al visibilizar los estragos de las masacres sobre la población civil. Si bien, la cobertura periodística realizada en la matanza de Badajoz y en el bombardeo a Gernika -ambos episodios paradigmas de los dos métodos de guerra ejercidos contra los republicanos- puso de manifiesto el doble potencial de la fotografía, y los usos dispares que los distintos actores hicieron de ella; hecho que nos plantea la necesidad de una relectura, más allá de lo que muestra el documento visual y su aparente carácter testimonial. Teniendo en cuenta el peligro latente en el manejo de la fotografía por parte del poder, el trabajo de los fotoperiodistas demostró su utilidad y valor social como instrumento de dignificación, denuncia y vehículo para la reconstrucción de una historia ocultada, tergiversada y silenciada.

The portrayal of the Spanish Civil War in the Badajoz newspaper Hoy, the property is analyzed in this study. Through an analysis of the content, it was possible to determine that the interest in the armed conflict never wavered throughout the conflict and it took up as its own a broad repertory of leitmotifs to justify the war, to demonize the Republic and to contribute to general Franco's rise to victory. It may likewise be seen that the strong control imposed by the FET y de las JONS put an end to the Catholic hallmark of the newspaper, at the same time as producing an fascistization of its contents. This paper is an update of the existing nuclear heritage in southern Spain. Old uranium mines, nuclear fuel factories, nuclear waste warehouses or places affected by nuclear accidents have a set of possibilities beyond their relation to uranium activity. The state of existing nuclear facilities in southern Spain, which form a heritage complex that deserves institutional attention and may have opportunities for its transformation into a resource for educational or tourist use, is analyzed and valued. From the detailed analysis of each element to the object of study, the diagram of strengths and weaknesses of the whole has been established. This suffers a certain stigmatization that should be reverted in a series of actions conducive in a sustainable way to comprehensiveness in their regional environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oliveira Salazar used the press so that the Francoist band would rise to victory in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). In this paper, the dispatches from the war correspondents of the Diário de Lisboa, Diário de Notícias, Diário da Manhã and O Século are analyzed, reporters who covered the massacre of Badajoz and the battle of Toledo. The investigation, using a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology, shows the propagandistic ends behind these news titles at the service of the foreign policy of the Estado Novo, and the way in which the censorship converted them into ideological weapons that demonized the Republic and offered a positive image of the rebels. The spectacular coverage given to the fall of the Alcázar de Toledo contributed to forging the myth of the historic site, which the journalist, Mário Neves (Diário de Lisboa), highlighted over and above all others in his report on the events at Badajoz.

The universalization of education that takes place throughout the twentieth century in Spain came strongly to the peripheral provinces especially from the sixties, although the process of school multiplication had been accentuated since the twenties. When democracy is established, we can say that in the capitals almost all the children were schooled and they had good teaching spaces.The historical process of change that we comment is analyzed here, studying Badajoz capital through the press and the archives, studying classrooms and school buildings. It went from the room reused in old or ramshackled houses to the modern technified palace with all the equipment. This evolution had an impact on urban planning, as new schools were built in all the neighborhoods.

Las escuelas públicas fueron construcciones fundamentales en el periodo concerniente a la dictadura de Primo de Rivera. Donato Hernández Ruiz se posiciona como el arquitecto que realizó mayor cantidad de edificios educativos en los pueblos de la provincia de Badajoz. Sin embargo, su figura es absolutamente desconocida, aunque se antoje como una figura fundamental para entender el desarrollo arquitectónico de la provincia de Badajoz. En el presente estudio nos proponemos exponer algunas obras fundamentales que, aseverando su autoría, son muestras de las características que en la obra de Hernández Ruíz imperan, así como dar a conocer a uno de los grandes arquitectos de la provincia de Badajoz en el tiempo de Primo de Rivera. Se trata de una investigación completamente novedosa.

Breve estudio que pretende dar a conocer un documento de la etapa del monarca español Carlos III, dirigido a los Tribunales y Justicias del Reino. Se les pide que procedan con arreglo a la ley y resuelvan las causas con la mayor rapidez posible. El documento analizado es una copia enviada al Ayuntamiento de Badajoz para su cumplimiento en la ciudad y en todos los pueblos de su partido.

Small cities with less than 200,000 inhabitants do not usually suffer from chronic congestion problems. However, private vehicles are used excessively, making it necessary to implement measures to encourage further use of public transport and pedestrian mobility to make it more sustainable. Bypasses improve level of service (LOS) by removing cars from the city center, leading to significant reductions in overall travel time. Most studies so far have been conducted in large cities suffering chronic congestion problems, so the aim of this research is to analyze the effects of bypasses in small and non-congested cities through the construction of a traffic model in Badajoz (Spain), starting with the allocation of the origin-destination travel matrix derived from surveys and traffic counts conducted at the southern and eastern accesses. The traffic model describes the mobility in potentially-capturable future southern traffic relationships and allows insights into different alternatives in the construction of a new high LOS road. This research concludes that small cities with no chronic congestion problems should plan bypasses as close as possible to the city, since they are the most economical, produce greater traffic capture, greater time savings, and eliminate the largest number of CO2 emissions from the urban center. The more distant alternatives have a higher LOS, however, these are longer and more expensive solutions that also capture less traffic and thus eliminate less CO2 emissions.

In order to provide new information to those already known about the stay of the Portuguese chapel master Estêvão de Brito in the Cathedral of Málaga (1613 to 1641), it has been made a review of this Cathedral cabildo's acts so as to collect new information. The sudden departure of the Portuguese musician from his previous destination, Badajoz cathedral, entailed some situations addressed in this article such as the attempts of the Cabildo to make him back, the opposition process against other chapel masters such as Gabriel de Páez, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla or Francisco Martínez de Ávalos, the great influence that he maintained on Badajoz cathedral, as well as the artistic and teaching work that he carried out for 28 years and his expressed interest in preserving it. The National Institute of Colonisation generated an intense constructive activity in Spanish rural environment. These new villages have been quite studied, but not so their funerary architecture. Architect José Mancera Martínez (1929-2003) worked at the Institute. He designed ten cemeteries for these villages in Badajoz between 1963 and 1970. Five received burials and the other half did not, being currently in ruins. Working on a similar program allowed him to research geometry and develop organic, octagonal, or hexagonal plants. His contribution to Spanish funerary architecture stands out for the diversity of layouts and symmetry as a compositional element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se presenta documentación inédita sobre dos conjuntos de orfebrería de la Edad del Bronce, que en algún momento estuvieron a punto de ser adquiridos para el Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Uno de ellos sería finalmente comprado por el British Museum, habiéndose perdido la pista al otro. La documentación presentada permite ampliar en algún aspecto nuestros conocimientos sobre ambos conjuntos con datos que eran desconocidos, y que se incorporan a la biografía de estos materiales.
