The article addresses the results of a case study on the experiences of violence that affect Bolivian migrants residing in Tarapacá, Chile. The research was carried out in 2019 and the objectives are: to understand how violence affects or alters the migration of those women and to investigate the level of knowledge about the Chilean and Bolivian institutions competent in the matter. The text is structured around three methodological strategies: a review of the state of the art of the debates on the relationship between gender, violence and migration; a documentary analysis of national and international legislation and, application of qualitative interviews to 10 migrants who suffered violence by their partners. Within the findings, we corroborate that gender violence indeed influences the decision to migrate of the interviewees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of mixed methods to deal with the complexity of remittance motivations is still infrequent. This paper uses statistical and qualitative data and provides evidence on the conceptual framework for understanding remittance behaviour proposed by the scholar Jørgen Carling. Carling's 'remittance scripts' understand remittances as multifaceted transactions and enrich the assessment of the relationship between remittances and development at origin. We use quantitative and qualitative data, both extracted from an ethnosurvey conducted in Spain, to shed light on the situation of transnational Bolivian immigrants after the economic crisis of 2008. We argue that the transactions are best represented by the necessity to provide for the recipients' basic needs. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT In this study which is part of a research project on Chagas disease (CD) among Bolivian immigrants in Sao Paulo, we describe socioeconomic characteristics, knowledge of CD and implications for acess to health care. We applied a structured questionnaire to a sample of 472 Bolivian adults (> 18 years) living in Sao Paulo and enrolled at the Barra Funda School Health Center. Participants’ median age was 28.5 years, 75.0% were from the Bolivian department of La Paz, and >90% worked in the garment industry. Respondents had lived in Sao Paulo for a median of 5.8 years. Only 169 (35.8%) were familiar with CD, while roughly half (50.4%) had lived in natural materials houses in Bolivia, 225 (47.7%) indicated familiarity with the vector, 23.9% had seen the vector in their homes in Bolivia, and 6.4% reported having been bitten by a triatomine bug. Factors associated with awareness of CD were analyzed by chi square tests, and those with p values

Factors associated with awareness of CD were analyzed by chi square tests, and those with p values <0.25 were included in a multivariable logistic regression model. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, having a relative with CD (OR=4.3, 95% CI=1.5-12.0), having lived in a house with mud or wood walls (OR=0.4, 95% CI=0.2-0.8), and having heard of the triatomine bug, or vinchuca, (OR=10.0, 95% CI=5.1-19.5) were significantly associated with awareness of CD. This study shows a low familiarity with CD among Bolivian migrants living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Raising awareness of the disease through specific communication strategies should be an essential component of public health programs to reduce the burden of CD in this and other vulnerable populations. LABOR market , *MIGRANT labor - Abstract
Based on an ethnographic fieldwork in the rural territories of Mendoza made between 2009 and the present, in this work I analyze the way in which the territorial movements of labor migrants between different regions of Bolivia and some rural locations of this province, have given place to the construction of migratory territorialities. To that end, I first synthesize the territorial mobility that links both countries based on the migratory trajectories of Bolivian workers, and then I focus on the territories of permanent or transitory settlement of these migrants in some rural areas of Mendoza. I consider three empirical cases that are exemplary of these dynamics: Ugarteche (Lujan de Cuyo), Cordon del Plata (Tupungato) and 25 de Mayo (Maipu); locations that have in common an important presence of Bolivian migrants that articulate in certain segments of the labor market, mainly the agriculture. This approach will allow us to show the particularities assumed by the process of re-territorialization carried out by Bolivian migrants in these places, process in which they build unique territorialities, charged with objective attributes and subjective senses that mark their distinctiveness. - Abstract
In this article we seek to analyze some specificities of the participation of Bolivian workers in Mendoza. From an intersectional perspective, our article constitutes a state of the question on the processes of labor segregation of these migrants in local agriculture. To do this, we initially review the theoretical contributions of studies on labor segregation and its link with migrant populations. Then we recover the background on Bolivian migrants in Argentina and their labor insertion processes. Towards the end, we focus on the processes of labor segregation in the agriculture of Mendoza, where we address the articulation of these migrants to seasonal agricultural work, horticultural production, seasonal employment in cannery and fruit factories and trade fairs. This exercise will allow us to reestablish the complex map that arises from the intersection between migrations, work and agricultural production, while highlighting the specificities of each labor where Bolivian migrants are overrepresented., Neste artigo buscamos analisar algumas especificidades da participação dos trabalhadores bolivianos na agricultura de Mendoza. In this study, we seek to analyze the meanings that two elementary school teachers from a municipal school in a city in the state of São Paulo attribute to the situation of social-schooling exclusion-inclusion (FIDALGO, 2006; FIDALGO; MAGALHÃES, 2017; FIDALGO, 2018) of Bolivian migrant students in educational contexts. The focus of this research is on the two teachers and their work. In this direction, we rely on Vygotsky's studies ([1934] 1993, p. 125) on senses and meanings that are collectively constructed in the school environment. We understand the senses as "the sum of all the psychological events that the word awakens in our consciousness" and we understand the meanings as "only one of the zones of the sense, the most stable and precise". Thus, when looking at data from the state of São Paulo, a municipality where there is the fourth largest population of Bolivian migrants enrolled in elementary school in Brazil. Which means 3% of Bolivian migrant students enrolled in elementary school in the state of São Paulo. This research is based on Vygotsky's Historical-Cultural Theory ([1924] 1997; [1934] 2009; [1932] 1982-1984), through the concepts of development and learning anchored by the organization of language, thoughts, and mediation, as well as the concepts of sense and meaning, which allow us to look and analyze how those involved see themselves, analyze their roles and those of others, as well as their exclusion-inclusion processes. To carry out this study, we used the Critical Collaboration Research (MAGALHÃES, [1996] 2006a, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2019), as the methodology of this study, as we understand the research participants as critical collaborators who, when discussing the conditions of social-schooling exclusion-inclusion of migrants experienced in the Brazilian context, contribute to the transformation of its context and to the debate on the process of inclusion of Bolivian migrant students in Brazil. Two participants are engaged in this research, a teacher for the third year; and a teacher for the 4th year of elementary school who works with Bolivian migrant students. From interviews, audio recordings, drawings and field notes, data were produced using a semi-structured interview script; field notes written by the researcher; written narratives; visual narratives, using drawings that represent the experience of teachers that work with Bolivian migrant students inserted in the school context in Brazil; and reflective sessions. The results demonstrate that there was a resignification in the participants' view through critical collaboration work during the process. This resignification is reflected in the exercise of autonomy and protagonist in their own stories.

On the basis of data collected by the RETTRANS survey (2011–2012) on Bolivian migrants living in Spain, this article aims to identify the influence of the 2008 economic crisis on the determinants marking the migrants’ return intention. In this regard, there is a need to incorporate the concept of double embeddedness based on migrants’ social networks (meso level), the way migration is imbricated in persons’ lives (micro level); and how, at a macro level, economic and social transformations of different contexts affect these decisions. The article highlights that unexpected changes in living conditions trigger a reconfiguration of these mixed factors that condition return intentions.

The aim of this paper is to undertake a case study in order to inquire how racism appears in the discourses of Argentinean bosses about Bolivian migrants who live and work in a settlement where bricks are manufactured, located in the peri-urban zone of the city of Cordoba, Argentina. Assuming that discursive practices are constitutive and constituent of social facts, we develop an appropriate analytical framework for the study of everyday racism. Based on the analysis of ethnographic fieldwork records and news regarding Bolivian immigrants published in local graphic media, we address the ways in which racism is reproduced, bearing in mind the particular socio-historical context in which Bolivians were visualized as immigrant workers. We argue that the boss of the analyzed workplace and his close family use racist stereotypes and prejudices, thus justifying and naturalizing the assignation of Bolivian workers to tough and badly paid posts, as well as the precarious and informal conditions of the production process. Summary: Due to international migration, Chagas disease, endemic in Latin America, has become more common in non-endemic areas. Chronic Chagas disease can cause damage to the digestive system leading to constipation. However, a range of factors influences constipation and a better understanding of the role of non-Chagas related factors is required to improve management of Chagas-related digestive problems. This study explores perceptions of constipation and changes in food and exercise habits amongst Bolivians in Barcelona, Spain. Bolivian migrants attending the Tropical Medicine Unit (Hospital Clínic, Barcelona) were interviewed about their food habits in Spain and Bolivia, migratory experience, work and leisure activities. Chagas seropositive participants also received radiological examinations. Bolivian migrants experienced dietary changes, influenced by work-related factors, which included reductions in quantities of food and liquid consumed. Almost half the participants reported changes in digestive rhythm since arriving in Spain. Constipation, which was common, in some cases was only recounted during interviews. Bolivian migrants’ constipation may be associated with chronic Chagas disease or migration-related dietary changes. Careful questioning using the Rome III criteria is however required to ensure its diagnosis. Radiological studies are also required to confirm the role of Chagas disease and identify potentially serious intestinal damage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article examines the emotional and health impacts that immigration to Spain has on Bolivian families. We explore transnational preventive and healing activities deployed in Spain and Bolivia to allay emergent anxieties, frustrations and illnesses. Although undocumented migrants have access to a universal public health system, they adopt pluralistic approaches to healing, combining traditional and biomedical treatments. An understanding of these healing strategies requires attention to how emotions and their embodiment are experienced in the context of immigration. We propose a theoretical framework which draws upon a constructivist approach to emotions and expand its potential by linking it to influences of transnational lifestyles and bifocality. Preoccupation and sorrow are considered key etiological agents for many illnesses in the Andes and therefore migrants are particularly mindful about how their own suffering abroad affects vulnerable relatives in Bolivia. Communication between migrants and relatives is permeated by white lies, non-disclosure or blatant suppression of information about illnesses or personal difficulties. Migrants rely on particular relatives to access transnational healing methods, while simultaneously concealing information about their health from others. A migrant's health experiences are thus constrained not only by difficulties with the public health system but also by emotional considerations that span informal transnational networks. This article deals with the initial process of immersion of the research project “Migration and Territorial Practices of the Bolivian Community in the City of Salta, Argentina: The Situation of Migrants in Working-class Neighborhoods.” The study is part of a broader program, “Migrations and Governance,” in which the Catholic University of Salta, Argentina’s Departments of Psychology, Architecture, and International Relations participate. The research team links up the information produced by the different areas involved using an interdisciplinary approach to facilitate access to inputs that will be the basis for formulating policies and programs involving the challenges and opportunities presented by migration.

Based on an ethnographic fieldwork carried out between 2009 and 2013, this paper deals with the practices that Bolivian workers and intermediaries keep in an informal hiring space, as mechanisms tending to articulate competing interests based on different negotiation modalities. The field work revealed that the conditions of sale of the labor capacity is determined by the "piece price", amount negotiated depending on the state of the plantations and based on certain parameters, such as the quantity and size of the fruits, and extension of the farms. He also remark that the cyclical demand for work gave rise to moments of “high” and “low” in the demand for work, generating differential negotiation skills among the actors involved. The characterization of these processes will explain the construction of a local labor market, which supplies the labor needs of a diversified agriculture, organized by different logics and oriented to different markets, for which it uses a heterogeneous set of workers than relate in specific places and through different types of intermediation., Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación

- Abstract
This article approaches from different dimensions the bolivian migratory process in relation to the labor insertion in the fifths of the horticultural belt to the north of the city of Santa Fe. These dimensions intersect around the general characteristics that approximate the organization of the productive activity and, consequently, allow to reflect on the mobility of a bolivian workforce since 1960. Secondly, it analyzes the ways of labour insertion, reconstructing some migratory trajectories of workers and current bolivian producers who throughout their lives in the migratory context give as much of the emergent transformations in the productivity of this horticultural sector., El presente artículo aborda desde diferentes dimensiones el proceso migratorio boliviano en relación con la inserción laboral en las quintas del cinturón hortícola al norte de la ciudad de Santa Fe.

This article aims to highlight the importance of Aymara migration from Bolivia to Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires, in Argentina. It is not concerned with the variety of methodological and theoretical approaches that have oriented studies about this topic, rather it seeks to shed light upon this new phenomenon. The novelty of Aymara migration to Buenos Aires does not lie in the fact that it began recently, rather in indigenous becoming, in the processes of ethnicization and identity formation among a significant portion of these migrants. The second half of the XX century registers a strong deepening of migration processes, a fact that enables it to be referred to as the “age of migrations” (Castles and Miller, 2003). Among territorial movements, those of seasonal nature maintain a significant presence in Mendoza province (Argentina), despite the major changes occurred in the agriculture of the region. This work seeks to characterize the province in terms of its attractiveness to seasonal migratory laborers, with particular emphasis on workers of Bolivian origin. For the analysis of the migrant population, a review is made of the existing records at national, regional and provincial scale. Then, the study of transient rural workers is approached on the basis of data contained in different secondary information sources. Finally, and within the framework of qualitative research strategies, we consider the labor dynamics unleashed in Mendoza, driven by the various forms of intermediation occurring in rural labor markets, where Bolivian migrants have a strong presence.
