Abstract: The presence of a neutron halo in 15C has been demonstrated in several reaction experiments at intermediate energies. In the present study, the dynamical effects of this structure are observed for the first time at Coulomb barrier energies in the 15C + 208Pb quasi-elastic scattering at Elab=65 MeV, measured at the HIE-ISOLDE facility, CERN using the high-granularity detector array GLORIA. A combined continuum discretised coupled channels and coupled reaction channels calculation describes the data well and significant coupling effects due both to breakup and single-neutron stripping are identified.

Abstract: The accuracy of reaction theories used to extract properties of exotic nuclei from scattering experiments is often unknown or not quantified, but of utmost importance when, e.g., constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter from observables as the neutron-skin thickness. In order to test the Glauber multiple-scattering model, the total interaction cross section of Image 1 on carbon targets was measured at initial beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The measurements were performed during the first experiment of the newly constructed R3B (Reaction with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment after the start of FAIR Phase-0 at the GSI/FAIR facility with beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The combination of the large-acceptance dipole magnet GLAD and a newly designed and highly efficient Time-of-Flight detector enabled a precise transmission measurement with several target thicknesses for each initial beam energy with an experimental uncertainty of ±0.4%. A comparison with the Glauber model revealed a discrepancy of around 3.1% at higher beam energies, which will serve as a crucial baseline for the model-dependent uncertainty in future fragmentation experiments.

Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F→15⁎O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

Abstract: Proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn reaction at an energy around 1.5 times the Coulomb barrier have been studied at HIE-ISOLDE CERN using, for the first time, the only existing postaccelerated 8B beam. This, together with the use of a high granularity and large solid angle detection system, allowed for a careful mapping of the elastic angular distribution, especially in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. Contrary to what is observed for the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on the same target in a similar energy range, the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution shows only a modest suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak, with no remarkable enhancement of the total reaction cross-section. Inclusive angular and energy distributions of 7Be produced in direct reaction processes have also been measured. The comparison of these data with the results of theoretical calculations for the elastic and non-elastic breakup contributions indicate that both processes are important. Overall, the experimental data suggest a 8B collision dynamics at the barrier very different from the one of neutron halo nuclei, showing only modest effects of coupling to continuum. This behaviour can be interpreted as due to the presence of the additional Coulomb interactions halo-core and halo-target together with the presence of the centrifugal barrier felt by the valence proton of 8B.

Abstract: The quasi-free scattering reactions 11C(p,2p) and 10,11,12C(p,pn) have been studied in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 300–400 MeV/u at the R3B-LAND setup. The outgoing proton-proton and proton-neutron pairs were detected in coincidence with the reaction fragments in kinematically complete measurements. The efficiency to detect these pairs has been obtained from GEANT4 simulations which were tested using the 12C(p,2p) and 12C(p,pn) reactions. Experimental cross sections and momentum distributions have been obtained and compared to DWIA calculations based on eikonal theory. The new results reported here are combined with previously published cross sections for quasi-free scattering from oxygen and nitrogen isotopes and together they enable a systematic study of the reduction of single-particle strength compared to predictions of the shell model over a wide neutron-to-proton asymmetry range. The combined reduction factors show a weak or no dependence on isospin asymmetry, in contrast to the strong dependency reported in nucleon-removal reactions induced by nuclear targets at lower energies. However, the reduction factors for (p,2p) are found to be 'significantly smaller than for (p,pn) reactions for all investigated nuclei. Abstract: The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z=6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed NA(p,2p)CA−1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 21+ state of 16,18,20C. The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton 1p1/2−1p3/2 spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent Z=6 magic number towards the neutron dripline.

Abstract: The proton-removal mechanism of the 12C→11B reaction induced on a carbon target via elementary nucleon-nucleon scattering is investigated in exclusive triple-coincidence measurements. The observed two-nucleon angular correlations are found to be consistent with quasi-free scattering of a projectile-like proton off a target-like nucleon. Exclusive cross sections for one-step pp and pn interactions are determined as σpp=17.2(12) mb and σpn=18.2(18), respectively. The extracted quasi-free component amounts up to 58(4)% of the total proton-removal cross section. The results are compared to total proton-removal cross sections obtained from the experiment and eikonal reaction theory. Abstract: New experimental data for dissociation of relativistic 17Ne projectiles incident on targets of lead, carbon, and polyethylene targets at GSI are presented. Special attention is paid to the excitation and decay of narrow resonant states in 17Ne. Distributions of internal energy in the O15+p+p three-body system have been determined together with angular and partial-energy correlations between the decay products in different energy regions. The analysis was done using existing experimental data on 17Ne and its mirror nucleus 17N. The isobaric multiplet mass equation is used for assignment of observed resonances and their spins and parities. A combination of data from the heavy and light targets yielded cross sections and transition probabilities for the Coulomb excitations of the narrow resonant states. The resulting transition probabilities provide information relevant for a better understanding of the 17Ne structure.

Abstract: Quasi-free scattering reactions of the type (p,2p) were measured for the first time exclusively in complete and inverse kinematics, using a 12C beam at an energy of ∼400 MeV/u as a benchmark. This new technique has been developed to study the single-particle structure of exotic nuclei in experiments with radioactive-ion beams. The outgoing pair of protons and the fragments were measured simultaneously, enabling an unambiguous identification of the reaction channels and a redundant measurement of the kinematic observables. Both valence and deeply-bound nucleon orbits are probed, including those leading to unbound states of the daughter nucleus. Exclusive (p,2p) cross sections of 15.8(18) mb, 1.9(2) mb and 1.5(2) mb to the low-lying 0p-hole states overlapping with the ground state (3/2−) and with the bound excited states of 11B at 2.125 MeV (1/2−) and 5.02 MeV (3/2−), respectively, were determined via γ-ray spectroscopy. Particle-unstable deep-hole states, corresponding to proton removal from the 0s-orbital, were studied via the invariant-mass technique. Cross sections and momentum distributions were extracted and compared to theoretical calculations employing the eikonal formalism. The obtained results are in a good agreement with this theory and with direct-kinematics experiments. The dependence of the proton–proton scattering kinematics on the internal momentum of the struck proton and on its separation energy was investigated for the first time in inverse kinematics employing a large-acceptance measurement.

10. Systematic trends in beta-delayed particle emitting nuclei: The case of βpα emission from 21Mg

Abstract: We have observed β+-delayed α and pα emission from the proton-rich nucleus 21Mg produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The assignments were cross-checked with a time distribution analysis. This is the third identified case of βpα emission. We discuss the systematic of beta-delayed particle emission decays, show that our observed decays fit naturally into the existing pattern, and argue that the patterns are to a large extent caused by odd–even effects.

Abstract: We present for the first time precise spectroscopic information on the recently discovered decay mode β-delayed 3p-emission. The detection of the 3p events gives an increased sensitivity to the high energy part of the Gamow–Teller strength distribution from the decay of 31Ar revealing that as much as 30% of the strength resides in the β3p-decay mode. A simplified description of how the main decay modes evolve as the excitation energy increases in 31Cl is provided.

Abstract: 50 Pág., In March 2022, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratifcation vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. The phylum was expanded by two new families (bunyaviral Discoviridae and Tulasviridae), 41 new genera, and 98 new species. Three hundred forty-nine species were renamed and/or moved. The accidentally misspelled names of seven species were corrected. Abstract: In March 2020, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. At the genus rank, 20 new genera were added, two were deleted, one was moved, and three were renamed. At the species rank, 160 species were added, four were deleted, ten were moved and renamed, and 30 species were renamed. Abstract: The Indian leafwing butterfly Kallima paralekta (Horsfield, 1829) (Nymphalidae) is an Asian forest-dwelling, leaf-mimic. Genome skimming by Illumina sequencing permitted assembly of a complete circular mitogenome of 15,200 bp from K. paralekta consisting of 79.5% AT nucleotides, 22 tRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs and a control region in the typical butterfly gene order. Kallima paralekta COX1 features an atypical CGA start codon, while ATP6, COX1, COX2, ND4, ND4L, and ND5 exhibit incomplete stop codons completed by 3’ A residues added to the mRNA. Phylogenetic reconstruction places K. paraleckta within the monophyletic genus Kallima, sister to Mallika in the subfamily Nymphalinae. These data support the monophyly of tribe Kallimini and contribute to the evolutionary systematics of the Nymphalidae.

Abstract: Rice orange leaf phytoplasma (ROLP) causes clear orange to yellowish leaf discoloration and severe stunting in rice seedlings. The ecological and biological characteristics of ROLP are largely unknown because the disease has not widely caused serious problems in rice cultivated areas, thereby leading to the low accumulation of research data. However, in the past decade, the disease became a threat to rice production, particularly in South China and India, it has also been recognised in other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Here, we observed the occurrence of ROLP in paddies of the Southeast Asian counties (Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines) and found that the isolates in the Philippines and Vietnam were monophyletic, while those in India, Thailand and Cambodia were more diverse, suggesting their potential origins. In Cambodia, it was revealed that following polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection, the known ROLP-insect vectors, N. virescens Distant and Recilia dorsalis Motchulsky, were ROLP-positive, indicating their roles in pathogen dispersal. Moreover, fluorescent and scanning electron microscopy revealed the intensive accumulation of the phytoplasma in phloem tissues and massive accumulation of storage starch in vascular bundle sheath and parenchyma. Altogether, this study illustrated the genetic variability of global ROLP isolates and the pathogen’s biological impact on rice tissue.

RTSV resistance found in traditional cultivars has contributed to a reduction in the incidence of RTD in the field. Natural RTSV resistance is a recessive trait controlled by the translation initiation factor 4 gamma gene (eIF4G). The Y1059V1060V1061 residues of eIF4G are known to be associated with the reactions to RTSV. To develop new sources of resistance to RTD, mutations in eIF4G were generated using the CRISPR/Cas9 system in the RTSV‐susceptible variety IR64, widely grown across tropical Asia. The mutation rates ranged from 36.0% to 86.6%, depending on the target site, and the mutations were successfully transmitted to the next generations. Among various mutated eIF4G alleles examined, only those resulting in in‐frame mutations in SVLFPNLAGKS residues (mainly NL), adjacent to the YVV residues, conferred resistance. Furthermore, our data suggest that eIF4G is essential for normal development, as alleles resulting in truncated eIF4G could not be maintained in homozygous state. The final products with RTSV resistance and enhanced yield under glasshouse conditions were found to no longer contain the Cas9 sequence. Hence, the RTSV‐resistant plants with the novel eIF4G alleles represent a valuable material to develop more diverse RTSV‐resistant varieties.

Abstract: Rice orange leaf phytoplasma (ROLP) belongs to the &ldquo, Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris&rdquo, 16SrI-B subgroup, which is solely transmitted by the zigzag-striped leafhopper (Recilia dorsalis Motchulsky) and the green leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). Recently, rice plants showing orange leaf discoloration have become ubiquitous in several paddies of two provinces in the Philippines. In total of 98 symptomatic rice plants, 82% (Laguna) and 95% (Mindanao) were ROLP-positive by nested PCR detection. These plants showed more varying symptoms than previously reported. The vector insect R. dorsalis was scarcely present but green paddy leafhopper, N. virescens Distant (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), was commonly observed in the paddies, thus the ability of N. virescens to transmit ROLP was thoroughly investigated. Newly emerged adult N. virescens, which fed on ROLD-source rice plants, were used to inoculate a susceptible rice seedling and was serially transferred into a new healthy seedling. Resultant positive transmission rates varied from 5.1% to 17.8%. The transmission ability of the insects was generally decreased over time. These findings suggest that N. virescens is an alternative vector of ROLP in the Philippines. Altogether, this study highlighted the increasing importance of ROLD-reemergence in Southeast and East Asia and proved the need for careful management of this alternative vector insect.

Abstract: Background:Cystatins are cysteine proteases-inhibitors secreted byFasciola hepaticain order to modulate the host immune response to promote survival of the parasite. These molecules are able to inhibit different mammal cathepsins, to regulate the immune balance via Th2 and T regulatory responses, to downregulate antigen presentation and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (1,2) – mechanisms that are important in the development and maintenance of several immunopathology, as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (3).Objectives:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of recombinants cystatin 1 and cystatin 3 fromFasciola hepaticain a mice model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).Methods:Twenty-seven DBA/1J mice were induced with CIA by an injection of collagen type-II and Freund’s adjuvant at days 0 and 18. Animals were randomly divided into three groups: vehicle (n=9, treated with phosphate-buffered saline), cystatin 1 (n=9, treated with 100 µg/dose of recombinant cystatin 1) and cystatin 3 (n=9, treated with 100 µg/dose of recombinant cystatin 3). Treatment started after day 18 by intraperitoneal injection once a day until the end of the experiment, at day 45 after CIA induction. Clinical arthritis score, nociception, paw edema, body and spleen weight were evaluated. Lymphocytes were isolated from lymph nodes and CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regulatory subset was assessed by flow cytometry. Data are expressed as mean ± SEM and were evaluated by one-way or two-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-test.Results:Treatment with cystatin 1 did not alter any of the analyzed parameters. On the other hand, cystatin 3 was able to reduce clinical arthritis score from day 38 with 32% of reduction at day 45 (9.22±1.22) compared to vehicle (13.56±0.73) (pConclusion:Treatment with cystatin 3 improved collagen-induced arthritis by attenuating the disease score, nociception and paw edema. Moreover, the treatment did not induce body weight loss or spleen weight alteration. Abstract: Infection of viruses in plants often modifies plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study we examined the effects of Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) infection on drought response in rice. RTSV infection delayed the onset of leaf rolling by 1–2 days. During the delay in drought response, plants infected with RTSV showed higher stomatal conductance and less negative leaf water potential under drought than those of uninfected plants, indicating that RTSV-infected leaves were more hydrated. Other growth and physiological traits of plants under drought were not altered by infection with RTSV. An expression analysis of genes for drought response-related transcription factors showed that the expression of OsNAC6 and OsDREB2a was less activated by drought in RTSV-infected plants than in uninfected plants, further suggesting improved water status of the plants due to RTSV infection. RTSV accumulated more in plants under drought than in well-watered plants, indicating the increased susceptibility of rice plants to RTSV infection by drought. Collectively, these results indicated that infection with RTSV can transiently mitigate the influence of drought stress on rice plants by increasing leaf hydration, while drought increased the susceptibility of rice plants to RTSV.

Abstract: The first direct experimental evidence of a multiparticle-hole ground state configuration of the neutron-rich Mg-33 isotope has been obtained via intermediate energy (400 A MeV) Coulomb dissociation measurement. The major part similar to(70 +/- 13)% of the cross section is observed to populate the excited states of Mg-32 after the Coulomb breakup of Mg-33. The shapes of the differential Coulomb dissociation cross sections in coincidence with different core excited states favor that the valence neutron occupies both the s(1/2) and p(3/2) orbitals. These experimental findings suggest a significant reduction and merging of sd-pf shell gaps at N similar to 20 and 28. The ground state configuration of Mg-33 is predominantly a combination of Mg-32(3.0,3.5MeV; 2(-), 1(-)) circle times nu(s1/2), Mg-32(2.5MeV; 2(+)) circle times nu(p3/2), and Mg-32(0; 0(+)) circle times nu(p3/2). The experimentally obtained quantitative spectroscopic information for the valence neutron occupation of the s and p orbitals, coupled with different core states, is in agreement with Monte Carlo shell model (MCSM) calculation using 3 MeV as the shell gap at N = 20.

However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. Abstract: The strategy goal oriented ventilation means that mechanical ventilation should aim at clearly defined immediate physiological objectives based upon the actual status of the individual patient. The immediate goals, which ultimately should lead to an optimal outcome, comprise normocapnia, oxygenation and lung protection. Obstacles of physiological nature on the way towards the goals are briefly discussed, as are strategies to overcome each of them. The challenge is to optimise all aspects of mechanical ventilation in order to reach all goals. For that purpose a holistic approach must be taken in which comprehensive information about patient status is taken into account. Shortcomings of available monitoring systems are underlined. On the basis of improved monitoring it should be possible to use computer simulation in order to come closer to the goals of mechanical ventilation, than what is possible on the basis of presently practised clinical routines.

Abstract: We report on the first observation of the unbound proton-rich nucleus 15Ne. Its ground state and first excited state were populated in two-neutron knockout reactions from a beam of 500 MeV/u 17Ne. The 15Ne ground state is found to be unbound by 2.522(66) MeV. The decay proceeds directly to 13O with simultaneous two-proton emission. No evidence for sequential decay via the energetically allowed 2- and 1- states in 14F is observed. The 15Ne ground state is shown to have a strong configuration with two protons in the (sd) shell around 13O with a 63(5)% (1s1/2)2 component.

Abstract: The coupling between bound quantum states and those in the continuum is of high theoretical interest. Experimental studies of bound drip-line nuclei provide ideal testing grounds for such investigations since they, due to the feeble binding energy of their valence particles, are easy to excite into the continuum. In this Letter, continuum states in the heaviest particle-stable Be isotope, 14Be, are studied by employing the method of inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics. New continuum states are found at excitation energies E∗=3.54(16) MeV and E∗=5.25(19) MeV. The structure of the earlier known 2+1 state at 1.54(13) MeV was confirmed with a predominantly (0d5/2)2 configuration while there is very clear evidence that the 2+2 state has a predominant (1s1/2, 0d5/2) structure with a preferential three-body decay mechanism. The region at about 7 MeV excitation shows distinct features of sequential neutron decay via intermediate states in 13Be. This demonstrates that the increasing availability of energetic beams of exotic nuclei opens up new vistas for experiments leading towards a new understanding of the interplay between bound and continuum states.

Abstract: Objective: To study pressure-volume (P/V) curves over a wide pressure and volume range in pigs.¶Design: Dynamic and static P/V curves (Pdyn/V and Pst/V) and compliance of the respiratory system were studied. The effects of recruitment, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and body position were analysed.¶Setting: Research animal laboratory.¶Materials: Seven anaesthetised, paralysed and ventilated healthy pigs of 21 kg.¶Measurements: P/V curves up to a pressure of about 40 cmH2O were recorded with a computer-controlled ventilator. Pst/V curves were obtained with the static occlusion method and Pdyn/V curves during an insufflation at a low, constant flow rate.¶Results: Pdyn/V recording showed a complex pattern. During the insufflation compliance increased, fell, increased and fell again. A 2nd ¶Pdyn/V recording immediately following the 1st one was displaced towards higher volumes and showed only one maximum of compliance. The difference between the two curves reflected: (1) lung collapse during a period of 5 min of ventilation at zero end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP) following a recruitment manoeuvre, (2) recruitment during the measurement of the 1st Pdyn/V curve. These observations were similar in the supine and in the left lateral position. After ventilation at PEEP, 4 cmH2O, the signs of collapse and recruitment were reduced. It was confirmed that PEEP offers a partial protection against collapse. Pst/V curves showed higher volumes and higher compliance values compared to Pdyn/V curves. This reflects the influence of viscoelastance on Pdyn/V curves.¶Conclusion: The study demonstrates a particularly strong tendency to lung collapse in pigs.

Abstract: Pressure-volume (P-V) curves of the respiratory system allow determination of compliance and lower and upper inflection points (LIP and UIP, respectively). To minimize lung trauma in mechanical ventilation the tidal volume should be limited to the P-V range between LIP and UIP. An automated low flow inflation (ALFI) technique, using a computer-controlled Servo Ventilator 900C, was compared with a more conventional technique using a series of about 20 different inflated volumes (Pst-V curve). The pressure in the distal lung (Pdist) was calculated by subtraction of resistive pressure drop in connecting tubes and airways. Compliance (Cdist), Pdist(LIP), and Pdist(UIP) were derived from the Pdist-V curve and compared with Cst, Pst(LIP), and Pst(UIP) derived from the Pst-V curve. Nineteen sedated, paralyzed patients (10 with ARDS and 9 with ARF) were studied. We found: Cdist = 2.3 + 0.98 x Cst ml/cm H2O (r = 0.98); Pdist(LIP) = 0.013 + 1.09 x Pst(LIP) cm H2O (r = 0.96). In patients with ARDS: Pdist(UIP) = 4.71 + 0.84 x Pst(UIP) cm H2O (r = 0.94). In ARF, we found differences in UIP between the methods, but discrepancies occurred above tidal volumes and had little practical importance. They may reflect that Pdist comprises dynamic phenomena contributing to pressure in the distal lung at large volumes. Compliance, but not LIP and UIP, could be accurately determined without subtraction of resistive pressure from the pressure measured in the ventilator. We conclude that ALFI, which is fully automated and needing no ventilator disconnection, gives useful clinical information.

Abstract: We established a guinea-pig model of anaphylactic bronchoconstriction provoked in immunized animals by inhalation and intravenous administration of 4,4-methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) and hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA). Guinea pigs were immunized intradermally with either MTHPA (n = 8) or HHPA (n = 8) suspended in olive oil. Control animals (n = 8) were injected with olive oil alone. After 4 weeks, the animals were challenged during mechanical ventilation by inhalation or intravenous administration of MTHPA or HHPA conjugated with guinea-pig serum albumin (GPSA). Airway flow, and airway and esophageal pressures were measured. Resistance (R) and static compliance (Cst) of the respiratory system (rs), lung (1), and chest wall were studied with the flow-interruption technique. After challenge with MTHPA-GPSA or HHPA-GPSA, R,rs and R,1 increased dramatically while Cst,rs and Cst,1 decreased, and severe arterial hypoxia developed. The reaction occurred at a well-defined dose of anhydride and lasted about 30 min. When the same dose was repeated after 30 min, the response was much attenuated. MTHPA and HHPA can induce asthma in guinea pigs. The dose-response curve at antigen challenge is steep. Once a threshold dose is reached, a severe reaction occurs. The reactivity is then exhausted. This model may be suitable for assessing occupational asthma caused by acid anhydrides and possibly by other low-molecular-weight chemicals.

Abstract: In this work we have studied the break‐up of 12C following the reactions 10B(3He,pααα) and 11B(3He,dααα). The study was performed at the 5 MV tandem in Madrid. The break‐up gives us information on excited states in 12C from the famous Hoyle state up to an energy of almost 18 MeV. Using a highly segmented experimental set‐up the simultaneous detection of the three alpha particles in coincidence with a proton or deuteron respectively made possible a full kinematic reconstruction of the break‐up. On the basis of the energies of the 3 α particles and their angular correlations it has been possible to determine the spin and parity of states for cases in which the assignment has been doubtful. Some of these levels will also de‐excite via electromagnetic emission. The comparison between the energy of proton that populate a state of 12C and the sum of the energies of the 3α emitted from the same state makes possible to determine the presence of electromagnetic disintegration (γ) to lower states within 12C followed by the 3α break‐up.

Abstract: Objective: Aspiration of dead space (ASPIDS) improves carbon dioxide (CO2) elimination by replacing dead space air rich in CO2 with fresh gas during expiration. The hypothesis was that ASPIDS allows normocapnia to be maintained at low tidal volumes (VT). Design: Prospective study. Setting: Adult intensive care unit in a university hospital. Patients: Seven patients ventilated for neurological reasons were studied. All patients were clinically and haemodynamically stable and monitored according to clinical needs. Interventions: ASPIDS implies that, during expiration, gas is aspirated through a catheter inserted in the tracheal tube. Simultaneously, a compensatory flow of fresh gas is injected into the inspiratory line. ASPIDS was achieved with a computer/ventilator system controlling two solenoid valves for aspiration and injection. Results: At the basal respiratory rate of 12.6 breaths min–1, with ASPIDS VT decreased from 602 to 456 ml, as did the airway pressures to a corresponding degree. PaCO2 and PaO2 remained stable. At a frequency of 20 breaths min–1, with ASPIDS VT was further reduced to 305 ml with preserved normocapnia. ASPIDS did not interfere with the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level. No intrinsic PEEP developed. All patients remained stable. No haemodynamic or other side effects of ASPIDS were noticed. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that ASPIDS may be a useful and safe modality of mechanical ventilation that limits alveolar pressure and minute ventilation requirements while keeping PaCO2 constant.

47. Effect of inhaled terbutaline sulphate in relation to its deposition in the lungs

Abstract: We studied the effects of inhaled terbutaline on FEV1 and gas exchange, and the pattern of deposition within the lungs. To document this and to estimate the dose of terbutaline administered to the lungs, [99mTc]DTPA was added to nebulised terbutaline solution. The aerosol was deposited preferentially in large or small airways by using aerosols with different particle mass median diameters (1.5 and 4.8 microns) and different inhalation flow rates (0.25 and 1.0 l/s). The patients inhaled placebo and then three increasing doses of terbutaline (0.006, 0.02 and 0.08 mg to the lungs). Finally, 2 mg terbutaline was inhaled from a metered dose inhaler via a spacer. After each inhalation FEV1, PaO2 and PaCO2 was measured. The inhalation of small particles at a low flow resulted in a fairly uniform lung deposition, while larger particles at a higher flow resulted in heavy central deposition. Penetration index for small and large particles were 1.3 +/- 0.2 and 0.8 +/- 0.3 (P less than 0.001), respectively. In both groups FEV1 increased similarly with each dose, and at 0.02 and 0.08 mg the increase was significant (P less than 0.01). After eight metered doses of terbutaline sulphate (0.25 mg per dose) inhaled via a spacer, there was a further increase in FEV1 (P less than 0.001). Gas exchange did not differ between the two groups but if they were combined the DA-aO2 was significantly lower after metered doses than control (P less than 0.05). Thus, it appears that the site of deposition is not important for the bronchodilator effect of terbutaline, and gas exchange tended to improve with both modes of administration.

Abstract: A complete kinematics study of the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) and B-11(He-3,d alpha alpha alpha) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of C-12 resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. Four-particle coincidence detection gives us complete information on the direction and energy of the individual alpha particles from the decay of C-12, allowing us to extract new information on the structure of C-12 which we shall present in this contribution. We have observed gamma de-excitation of the T=1 15.11 MeV resonance using charged particle detectors, and have constructed Dalitz plots of the individual resonances in C-12 using the complete kinematics information of the alpha particles which come from their break-up.

Abstract: Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N = 14, 16 in neutron‐rich O isotopes rather than N = 20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the 24O is a doubly magic nucleus (Z = 8, N = 16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the 23,24O ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Results obtained in one‐neutron removal reactions performed by using in‐flight radioactive ion beams produced at the Fragment Separator FRS of GSI are reported.
