In this study, a hydrothermal process was utilized to grow mixed-valence CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 nanosheets on carbon fiber paper, forming a three-dimensional hierarchical electrode (CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP). The ordered array structure, coupled with the porous bowl-like structure, enhances the exposure of more electrode active sites and facilitates analyte penetration, thus enhancing the electrode sensing performance. As a binder-free sensor, the CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP sensor exhibited remarkable sensitivity in detecting Malachite Green (MG), Sunset Yellow (SY) and Tartrazine (TA) over wide concentration ranges: 0.1-300 μM for MG (R 2  = 0.994), 0.005-200 μM for SY (R 2  = 0.996), and 0.005-300 μM for TA (R 2  = 0.995) with low detection limits of 0.033 μM for MG, 0.0016 μM for SY, and 0.0016 μM for TA (S/N = 3), respectively. Additionally, the 3D CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP sensor detected MG, SY, and TA in a mixed solution with satisfactory results. In the current work, electrostatic interactions were used to immobilize the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) onto five types of ceramic materials (C) with different concentrations of oxidized metals (C1-C5). The highest immobilization efficiency (70 and 77%) was detected at 6 mg C3 and 18 enzyme units. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis of C3-HRP confirmed the immobilization of the enzyme. After ten reuses, the reusability analysis showed that (66%) of the C3-HRP enzyme activity was retained. For C3-HRP, the optimum pH and temperature of the soluble enzyme were shifted from 7.0 and 30 °C to 6.0 and 50 °C. Up to 40 °C and 50 °C, respectively, the soluble HRP and C3-HRP remained steady. The kinetic analysis revealed that the Km and Vmax of soluble HRP and C3-HRP were, respectively, 5.5 mM, 0.66 units, and 8 mM, 0.52 units for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and 35.5 mM, 3.4 units and 40 mM, 1.1 units for guaiacol. Compared to soluble-HRP, the C3-HRP exhibited a greater oxidizing affinity toward several phenolic compounds (Guaiacol, o-dianisidine, o-phenylenediamine, pyrogallol, p-aminoantipyrine). In comparison with soluble-HRP, the C3-HRP showed increased stress tolerance with Triton X-100, urea, metals, isopropanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PMS-AOP) has shown great potential in sewage purification, and catalyst development capable of efficient PMS activation is a key while challenging element. Herein we reported a facile electro-explosive route to synthesize the oxygen vacancy (Vo)-enriched Mo/MoO 2 without using chemical reagents. The detailed studies suggested that the synergy of Mo active site and Vo in the catalyst significantly boosted the activation kinetics of PMS. Evidently, the Mo site of different oxidation states contributed to chemical activation of PMS, while the Vo favored the activation of PMS and the generation of non-radical 1 O 2 species. As a result, the Mo/MoO 2 -10 h/PMS system delivered a complete removal of acid orange 7 (AO7) within 4 min, significantly exceeding the activity of Mo/PMS (16%), MoO 2 -H/PMS (25%) and most of other PMS-based systems. Moreover, the current system showed high potential for removal of different pollutants including antibiotics and organic dyes. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies revealed that the 1 O 2 species was significant for AO7 decomposition. The precise regulation of proteasome activity has become a focal point in current research, particularly its implications in cancer treatment. Bortezomib is used for treating multiple myeloma and is found to be ineffective against solid tumors. A spatiotemporal control over the proteasome is one of the solutions to resolve these issues using external stimuli, such as light. Thus, we designed and synthesized azobenzene-containing tripeptide vinyl sulfones 1 , 2 , 3 , and 4 , as the azobenzene moiety can impart E↔Z isomerism upon exposure to UV light. Further, the hydrophobicity of these peptides was fine-tuned by systematically varying the size of hydrophobic amino acids at the P1, P2, and P3 positions. The light-induced Z isomers of these photopeptides showed excellent cellular potency in HeLa, MCF-7, and A549 cell lines. Photopeptide 4 with valine at the proximal position, phenylalanine at P2, and leucine at the P1 positions exhibited 19.3- and 6.6-fold cellular potency in MCF-7 and A549 cells, respectively.

This research investigates a novel nanocomposite material composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and nickel-5,15-bisdodecylporphyrin (Ni-BDP) nanoparticles for the effective removal of methyl orange (MO), a harmful synthetic dye, from water. The structure and composition of the synthesized rGO/Ni-BDP nanocomposite were characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The study demonstrates the material's efficacy as both a catalyst and adsorbent for MO removal. Optimal performance was observed at pH 3.0, where the positively charged nanocomposite surface facilitated strong interactions with negatively charged MO molecules, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity. Under these conditions, 0.01 g of the nanocomposite achieved an impressive 86.2% MO removal efficiency. Furthermore, the study explored the reusability of the rGO/Ni-BDP nanocomposite in repeated cycles of photocatalytic MO degradation under visible light irradiation. While exhibiting some decrease in efficiency over five cycles, the nanocomposite maintained a respectable degradation rate even after multiple uses. Finally, the antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposite were evaluated against both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria exhibiting a zone of inhibition measuring 23 mm and 26, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 2.50 µg/ml and 1.25 µg/ml for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The results revealed significant antibacterial activity, demonstrating the broad-spectrum efficacy of the rGO/Ni-BDP nanocomposite. Artificial transmembrane transport systems are receiving a great deal of attention for their potential therapeutic application. A major challenge is to switch their activity in response to environmental stimuli, which has been achieved mostly by modulating the binding affinity. We demonstrate here that the activity of a synthetic anion transporter can be controlled through changes in the membrane mobility and incorporation. The transporters─equipped with azobenzene photoswitches─poorly incorporate into the bilayer membrane as their thermally stable ( E , E , E )-isomers, but incorporation is triggered by UV irradiation to give the ( Z )-containing isomers. The latter isomers, however, are found to have a lower mobility and are therefore the least active transporters. This opposite effect of E - Z isomerization on transport capability offers unique photocontrol as is demonstrated by in situ irradiation studies during the used transport assays. These results help to understand the behavior of artificial transporters in a bilayer and are highly important to future designs, with new modes of biological activity and with the possibility to direct motion, which may be crucial toward achieving active transport.

The construction, structural identifications along with compositional properties, using TEM, FT-IR, and XPS spectroscopies, of an innovative light-induced multi-arm azobenzenes based Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (Azo-Fe 3 O 4 MNPs) are being reported. Such organic (light-sensitive dendrimers-like structure), inorganic (magnet core), hybrid material has been applied as an efficient recoverable/reusable extractive sorbent for the detection of phthalate plasticizers from acetate buffer solution. The extraction study was controlled within consecutive procedures via UV-light exposure to achieve pore-size control which then further subjected for the evaluation of the analytes' retention, separation, and release as well as the detection of the phthalate pollutants using GCMS-. Various experimental conditions, such as time of extraction, salt concentration, pH, and desorption time, were studied and adjusted. Additionally, the extraction repeatability (RSD from 0.46 % to 6.12%, n = 5) of the studied sorbent was comparable to other published work. The linear range extended from 6.25 to 100 μg L - ¹ and detection limits (LOD) within the range of 41- 150 ng L -1 were achieved, demonstrating good linearity with values ranging from 0.9992 to 0.9892. The inter-batch and intra-batch RSD ranged from 0.46 % to 6.12 %, respectively. The development of durable photosensitizers is pivotal for advancing phototherapeutic applications in biomedicine. Here, we introduce a core-shell azobenzene-spiropyran structure on gold nanoparticles, engineered to enhance singlet oxygen generation. These nano-photosensitizers exhibit increased structural stability and thermal resistance, as demonstrated by slowed O-N-C bond recombination dynamics via in-situ Raman spectroscopy. Notably, the in-situ formation of merocyanine and a light-induced compact shell arrangement extend its half-life from 47 minutes to over 154 hours, significantly boosting singlet oxygen output. The nano-photosensitizer also shows high biocompatibility and notably inhibits tau protein aggregation in neural cells, even with phosphatase inhibitors. Further, it promotes dendritic growth in neuro cells, doubling typical lengths. Azo-incorporating was reported to be an effective strategy for increasing SDH inhibitory activity but for poor in vivo control effects. Herein, the azo-incorporated compounds were structurally optimized to retain a preferential conformation by replacing the azo bond with their bioisosteres. Interestingly, the 1,2,4-oxadiazole compound D2 displayed a broad fungicidal spectrum as well as fluxapyroxad. More excitedly, compound D2 showed excellent antifungal activities against rice sheath blight disease both in vitro (EC 50 = 0.001 μg/mL) and in vivo (EC 50 = 1.08 μg/mL, EC 95 = 4.67 μg/mL). In addition, an extra π-π interaction was found between the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring of compound D2 and the phenyl ring of residue D_Y586, which might interpret the enhanced potency of compound D2 against Rhizoctonia solani . Further structural optimizations of the 1,2,4-oxadiazole compounds gave several analogues that made a breakthrough in controlling rice blast disease. These 1,2,4-oxadiazole compounds, derived from azobenzene derivatives, could be antifungal leads especially against R. solani and Magnaporthe grisea , exemplifying an interesting mode of pesticide discovery and providing theoretical guidance for innovation of the SDHI fungicide.

This article describes the detailed methodology of how to inject photoswitchable ortho-functionalized tetrafluorinated short interfering RNAs (F-siRNAs) into a single cell of stage-two Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos and how to control gene silencing with different wavelengths of light. Many of the prior papers describing Japanese medaka embryo injections omit key information. As such, this article aims to give an in-depth explanation as to how the NanoJect III microinjector can be used for this purpose. To obtain the embryos for microinjection, adult medaka are housed under a 14-hr light, 10-hr dark cycle to mimic their natural breeding period. This induces mating at approximately the same time each day, when the lights turn on, so recently fertilized eggs can be obtained. Synthetic F-siRNAs are injected into transgenic stage-two single-cell Japanese medaka embryos expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP). Our data demonstrate that our F-siRNAs can silence gene activity in Japanese medaka embryos expressing eGFP. Moreover, gene expression can be activated by exposing F-siRNA-injected embryos to blue light and deactivated a few days after exposure to green light. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first reversible control of a gene-silencing oligonucleotide within an in vivo system. © 2024 The Author(s). Sulfide ZnS-SiO 2 composite photocatalysts with biogenic silica matrix were prepared by sol-gel method based on wet gel and xerogel. FT-IR, SEM, XRD, EDXRF, UV-Vis, and XPS methods were systematically used to characterize the obtained materials. The use of support allowed to obtain stable porous (S BET  = 79-105 m 2  g -1 ; V pore  = 0.25-0.17 cm 3 ·g -1 ) ZnS-SiO 2 photocatalysts in aqueous solutions. Zn 2+ content in methyl orange solution after its degradation was 0.4 MPC. ZnS-SiO 2 composites had 3.68-3.70 eV band gap. The obtained materials were photoactive under different irradiation conditions (sunlight, UV-light, Xenon light, visible light) due to effective separation of charge carriers (e - and h + ). Methyl orange degradation degree under UV light excitation was 35-88%, under sunlight - 11-30%. ZnS-SiO 2 composite synthesized using silica xerogel showed a greater photoactivity due to a presence of cone-shaped or cylindrical pores with one open end in its structure and a higher content of ZnS photoactive component. Heavy metals and organic dyes commonly coexist in water, which pose a serious threat to human health. Herein, a functional aerogel for adsorption of Cu(II)-methyl orange binary-polluted system was prepared. Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was prepared by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (TEMPO)-NaBr-NaClO system using abandoned pineapple leaves as the main raw material, and chitosan/cellulose nanofibril (CS/CNF) composite aerogel was constructed by sol-gel method combined with freeze-drying. The structure of composite aerogel was characterized by XRD, FTIR, TG and SEM. The fabricated aerogels were ultra-lightweight and exhibited a highly porous 3D network structure. The effects of adsorbent dosage, ionic strength, solution pH, adsorbent concentration, adsorption time, and temperature on the adsorption of Cu(II) and methyl orange (MO) by composite aerogel were studied. The adsorption of composite aerogel towards mono-polluted of Cu(II) and MO reached equilibrium after 100 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 116.69 and 295.86 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption of Cu(II) and MO by CS/CNF aerogel was mainly achieved through electrostatic attraction, metal chelation and hydrogen bonding interactions. Protamine (PA) is the only licensed antidote for reversing heparin anticoagulation by electrostatically binding with heparin. Efforts have been made on designing various heparin-scavengers, while, it remains a great challenge for gaining the external-stimuli responsive PA-release material. In this study, a generic strategy is developed for fabricating photoresponsive protein materials with the designed azobenzene-containing surfactant. For the first time, based on the isomerization of azobenzene, both cationic and anionic proteins could be phase change biomaterials which are capable of transiting to isotropic state under UV irradiation at room temperature. The formation of isotropic state could set the proteins free from the binding state, activating their intrinsic biological functions. Employing this mechanism, one smart PA material for inhibiting heparin is developed, which could effectively photo-modulate the heparin concentration by turning on-and-off the free state of PA from the binding state. With good biocompatibility, the PA material addresses photoresponsive hemostatic activity in biological studies, confirming its great potential clinical values. Herein, bionanocomposite beads based on Carboxymethyl cellulose/Dextrant sulfate (CMC/DS) embedding silver nanoparticle-functionalized zeolite (AgZ) were developed and proposed as catalysts for catalytic hydrogenation of Direct Red 16 (DR16) azo dye under different experimental parameters. The obtained results showed that AgZ incorporation into the polymer matrix produced highly porous structures with improved thermal stability. For antibacterial application, it was shown that the engineered bionanocomposites were effective against all tested bacteria. The CMC-DS-AgZ catalysts showed good catalytic performances for the hydrogenation of DR16 in various real-life water samples and even in presence of several mineral salts, however with a high efficiency (99 %) obtained for the catalyst prepared at elevated AgZ content (with a k app rate constant of 0.239 min -1 ). Moreover, the hydrogenation study of various azo dyes highlighted the satisfactory application potential of the catalysts and their versatility. The catalyst beads showed good recyclability for five successive cycles without any significant loss of efficiency or stability. The proposed mechanism for DR16 catalytic hydrogenation on C3-D1-AgZ revealed that AgZ could enhance the catalytic activity of the beads by facilitating the formation of AgH intermediates. The development of new efficient materials for the removal of water-soluble toxic organic dyes has been one of the focused research areas in the recent past. There is a strong demand for the new materials as most of the reported techniques/materials suffer from serious limitations. In this regard, a series of flexible chitosan-based task-specific polyurethane foams (PUCS-GP, PUCS-CA-GP, PUCS-TA-GP, and PUCS-GA-GP) associated with naturally available hydroxycarboxylic acids was developed. The basis for the preparation of these task-specific and functionalized PU foams is to possess amine groups for trapping the anionic dyes (example: Orange II denoted as OII) and carboxylic acid groups for attracting the cationic dyes (example: Rhodamine B denoted as RhB) under specified pH conditions. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to assess and improve various parametric conditions. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption kinetics closely agree with the pseudo-second-order model having a maximum sorption capacity of 38.3 mg/g at pH 3 for OII on PUCS-GP and 48.4 mg/g at pH 6 for RhB on PUCS-CA-GP. Furthermore, the adsorption process was described by isotherms, kinetic equations and thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°). Notably, the regeneration of OII and RhB dyes from the exhausted PUCS-GP and PUCS-CA-GP materials was effectively accomplished. The recovered PUCS-GP shows >90 % OII and PUCS-CA-GP displays >70 % RhB removal efficiency even after twelve adsorption-desorption processes under mild conditions, demonstrating excellent recyclability/durability. This context summarizes a detail on the fabrication of Acacia senegal Gum Hydrogel (ASGh) within well-engineered microemulsion, and thereafter chemical modification for environmental remediation. In brief, Divinylsulfone was used to crosslink polymeric chains and produce ASGh in ˂50 μm size within the reverse-microemulsion of Natrium-bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate in gasoline. ASGh were subjected to chemical modification via versatile diethylenetriamine to produce m-[ASGh] for adsorptive removal of methyl orange (MO), eosin Y (EY) and congo red (CR) from waste-water. ASGh and m-[ASGh] were characterized through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and zeta potential measurements. For instance, FT-IR spectra depicted new bands upon Diethylenetriamine modification. The zeta potential measurements confirm a positively charged surface of m-[ASGh] upon Diethylenetriamine addition. Interestingly, 0.05 g m-[ASGh] demonstrated 91.0, 84.1, and 73.0 % removal efficiency towards MO, EY and CR, respectively in 2 h equilibrium time. Langmuir, Freundlich and modified-Freundlich isotherms were applied to further delineate adsorption data. Modified-Freundlich model depicted comparatively more agreeable fit, and delivered R 2 value nearer to unity. Further, 143 mg·g -1 , 130 mg·g -1 and, 116 mg·g -1 maximum adsorption capacity (Q M ) was represented by m-[ASGh] towards MO, EY and CR, respectively in 2 h. Interestingly, real water sample were tested whereby, the Q M against MO, EY and CR was 146 mg·g -1 , 132 mg·g -1 and, 111 mg·g -1 , respectively in 2 h equilibrium time. In this study, electron transport pathways were activated and diversified by coupling counter-diffusion biofilms with micro-electrolysis for Alizarin yellow R (AYR) denitrogenation. Due to the binding of AYR to two residues of EC 4.1.3.36 with higher binding energy, the expression of EC 4.1.3.36 was down-regulated, causing the EC 3.1.2.28 and EC 2.5.1.74 for menaquinone synthesis (redox mediator) undetectable in Membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABR). Spontaneous electron generation in the micro electrolysis-coupled MABR (ME-MABR) significantly activated two enzymes. Activated menaquinone up-regulated decolourisation related genes expression in ME-MABR, including azoR (2.12 log 2 ), NQO1 (2.97 log 2 ), wrbA (0.45 log 2 ), and ndh (0.47 log 2 ). The diversified electron flow pathways also promoted the nitrogen metabolism coding genes up-regulation, accelerating further inorganic nitrogen denitrogenation after AYR mineralisation. Compared to MABR, the decolourisation, mineralisation, and denitrogenation in ME-MABR increased by 25.80 %, 16.53 %, and 13.32 %, respectively. Most adsorbents are currently restricted by their single function in pollutant removal from complex wastewater. Herein, we constructed a versatile chitosan-based adsorbent (MC-DA) by grafting amphoteric copolymers with high pH-responsiveness property, aiming at the removal of multiple ionic contaminants. Specifically, the surface charge and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of MC-DA can be finely tuned under different pH conditions. As a result, the effective adsorption of cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic Acid Orange 7 (AO7) with capacities of 627.4 mg/g and 1146.8 mg/g were achieved respectively, superior to most reported materials. Regarding the characterization results, the adsorption mechanisms for MB adsorption were electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, while the electrostatic attraction was the main driving force for AO7 adsorption. Amidst the rapid development of the textile industry, wastewater problems also arise. High-performance materials for reactive black 5 (RB5) dye treatment by adsorption and photocatalysis were evolved using Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles on carbon media. Herein, the synthesis of spherical carbon via the water-in-oil emulsion method alongside a sol-gel process and the production of TiO 2 nanoparticles using the precipitation procedure of Titanium isopropoxide and carbonization at 700-900 °C for 2 h are a novel approach in this work. The characterization of these materials indicates that different temperatures result in distinct properties, for instance, raised pores on the surface of the media and changes in the crystal structure of TiO 2 . The results show that the as-synthesized material carbonized at 900 °C had distinguished dye adsorption, up to 430 ppm in 1 h, due to their high surface area and pore volume. On the contrary, the calcined 700 °C condition had the prominent photocatalytic efficiency on account of the heterojunction band gap between anatase and rutile crystal structure. Chemical modification of active scaffolds from natural products has gained interest in pharmaceutical industries. Nevertheless, the metabolites extraction is time-consuming while the lead is frequently mismatched with the receptor. Here, the diazo coupling approach was introduced to generate a series of vanillin derivatives featuring halogenated azo dyes ( 1a-h ). The vanillin derivatives showed effective inhibition of S. aureus (7-9 mm) and E. coli (7-8 mm) compared to the parent vanillin, while 1b had the highest inhibition zone (9 mm) against S. aureus comparable to the reference ampicillin. The presence of N = N, C = O, -OH, -OCH3 and halogens established strategic binding interactions with the receptor. The potential vanillin-azo as an antimicrobial drug was supported by in silico docking with penicillin-binding proteins and DFT (using Gaussian 09) with binding affinity -7.5 kcal/mol and energy gap (Egap) 3.77 eV, respectively. This study represents a significant advancement in drug discovery for effective antibiotics with excellent properties.

This work aims to produce hybrid materials with potential applications in dye photodegradation. Therefore, hybrid films were obtained by incorporating cobalt (II, III) oxide (Co3O4) or cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles (NPs) with 18 ± 1.6 nm and 26 ± 1.3 nm, respectively, into a poly 3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) polymeric matrix. The Co3O4@P3HB and CoFe2O4@P3HB hybrid films were fabricated by solvent casting in a ratio of 85 mg to 15 mg (P3HB-NPs). Different spectroscopic and microscopy techniques characterized the Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs and the P3HB, Co3O4@P3HB and CoFe2O4@P3HB films. The optical band gap for Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs was estimated from their diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) around 2.5 eV. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the hybrid films revealed that the nanometric sizes of the Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles incorporated into the P3HB are preserved. The magnetic hysteresis curve of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and CoFe2O4@P3HB film showed a ferromagnetic behaviour at 300 K. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of nanocrystals, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided evidence for the successful incorporation of the NPs into the P3HB matrix. The surface roughness and hydrophilicity of the hybrid films are increased compared to the P3HB film. The impact of the nanoparticles and the hybrid films on the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) in its acidic form was studied. The photodegradation tests were carried out by direct sunlight exposure. The CoFe2O4@P3HB hybrid film achieved 85% photodegradation efficiency of a methyl orange solution of 20 ppm after 15 minutes of exposure to sunlight. After 30 minutes of exposure to sunlight, the nanoparticles and the hybrid films reached about 90% of the MO degradation. This review explores electrochemical sensing strategies for synthetic orange dyes, addressing the growing need for sensitive and selective detection methods in various industries. We examine the fundamental principles underlying the electrochemical detection of these compounds, focusing on their redox behavior and interaction with electrode surfaces. The review covers a range of sensor designs, from unmodified electrodes to advanced nanomaterial-based platforms. Chemically modified electrodes incorporating polymers and molecularly imprinted polymers are discussed for their enhanced selectivity. Particular attention is given to nanomaterial-based sensors, including those utilizing carbon nanotubes, graphene derivatives, and metal nanoparticles, which have demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and wide linear ranges. The potential of biological-based approaches, such as DNA interaction sensors and immunosensors, is also evaluated. Current challenges in the field are addressed, including matrix effects in complex samples and long-term stability issues. Emerging trends are highlighted, including the development of multi-modal sensing platforms and the integration of artificial intelligence for data analysis. The review concludes by discussing the commercial potential of these sensors in food safety, environmental monitoring, and smart packaging applications, emphasizing their importance in ensuring the safe use of synthetic orange dyes across industries.

Multifunctional colloidal microgels that exhibit stimuli-responsive behaviour and excellent biocompatibility have attracted particular attention for developing functional compartmentalized networks. Herein, a series of stimuli-responsive microgels (M0, M1, and M2) were designed through the copolymerization of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (DEGMA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) monomers using hydroxy ethyl methacrylate-coupled azobenzene (HEMA-Az) and ethylene glycol dimetharylate (EGDMA) as crosslinkers. The behaviour of the microgels in response to temperature, pH, and light was thoroughly investigated using spectroscopic, microscopic, and light-scattering techniques. Interestingly, the microgels deswelled with an increase in temperature, decrease in pH, and under the irradiation of UV light. Such a reversible swelling/deswelling behaviour was exploited for microgel M2, which showed better photoactuation at pH 5 with a higher fluid pumping velocity. The actuating microgel M2 was optimized for loading the drug ciprofloxacin (Cf) to study its release at different temperature, pH, and light conditions. Microgel M2 exhibited photoresponsive Cf release at pH 5 and 37 °C, demonstrating its potential for application in on-demand drug release.

The azobenzene moiety is an intriguing structure that deforms under UV and visible light, indicating a high potential for biomedical applications. However, its reaction to UV radiation is problematic because of its high energy and low tissue penetration. Unlike previous research on azobenzene structures in photoresponsive materials, this study presents a novel method for imparting photostimulation-responsive properties to liposomes by incorporating the azobenzene moiety and extending the light wavelength with up-conversion nanoparticles. First, the azobenzene structure was incorporated into a phospholipid molecule to create Azo-PSG, which could spontaneously form vesicle assemblies in aqueous solutions and isomerizes within 1 h of light exposure. Furthermore, orthogonal up-conversion nanoparticles with a core-shell structure were created by sequentially growing lanthanide rare earths in the shell layer, which efficiently converts near-infrared light into ultraviolet (400 nm) and blue-green (540 nm) light. Combining these core-shell structured up-conversion nanomaterials with Azo-PSG molecules resulted in the creation of a near-infrared light-responsive smart nanoliposome system. Under near-infrared light irradiation, UCNPs emit UV and blue-green light, causing conformational changes in Azo-PSG molecules that allow drug release within 6 h. The reversible structural shift of Azo-PSG in response to light stimulation holds enormous promise for improving drug release techniques. This novel technique also expands the usage of UV-responsive compounds beyond their constraints of low penetration and high biotoxicity, allowing for rapid medication release under NIR light.

Duckweeds (Spirodela polyrrhiza) are free-floating macrophytes that grow profusely in nutrient-rich waters. Under ideal conditions, they exhibit a rapid growth rate and can absorb a substantial amount of nutrients, macromolecules, and pollutants from bodies of water. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized from plant extracts, particularly under stress conditions, have opened new research avenues in the field of nanotechnology. Under salinity stress, the accumulation of flavonoids in duckweeds can affect the structure of ZnO NPs, helping researchers ascertain their antimicrobial role. In our study, we exposed mid-log phase duckweed monocultures to 75 mM NaCl in a full-strength Murashige and Skoog medium for 7 days, followed by a 15-day recovery period. We observed significant overexpression of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide as reactive oxygen species. As a result, chlorophyll and certain metabolites were produced in lesser amounts, while flavonoid and phenol content increased by 12% and 8%, respectively. This overproduction persisted up to 10 days into the recovery treatment period but dropped by 8% and 5%, respectively, by the 15th day. The flavonoid coating transformed the NPs into rosette clusters, which exhibited reduced antimicrobial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila, a Gram-negative, fish-pathogenic bacterium. Herein, we discuss potential mechanisms for the conformational transformation of ZnO NPs into finer dimensions in response to NaCl-induced oxidative stress in duckweed. In this study, the azo dye degradation capacity of salinity-treated plants increased as the flavonoid profile became enriched. This study investigates the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes from aqueous solutions using purified Moroccan bentonite, being mainly composed of silica and alumina, in the form of quartz and cristobalite. The temperature controls the adsorption capacity for the kinetics, increasing 5.08% (from 295.1 to 310.1 mg/g) for the MB and 55.47% (from 86.8 to 134.9 mg/g) for the MO. It was discovered that the pseudo-second-order model, with a low Bayesian criterion indicator of 12.72 and R 2 adj > 0.996, was the best suitable for explaining both systems. The adsorption isotherm, experimental data indicate that both systems follow the Langmuir isotherm. At lower temperatures, 298.15 K 1.22 molecules are adsorbed per site. However, at a higher temperature of 328.15 K, the number of molecules is less than a unit of 0.68. As for MO, the number of molecules remains above 1.4 per site for all the temperatures studied. The endothermic nature of the system is indicated by the observation that the adsorption energy tends to grow for both systems: for the MB, it increases from 18.85 to 21.26 kJ/mol, and for the MO, it increases from 14.83 to 19.01 kJ/mol. Last, thermodynamic functions indicate that maximum entropy is reached around the half-concentration saturation at 25 and 124 mg/L, which is the maximum energetic concentration of the system. The same results were obtained for Gibbs free energy, where the maximum energy found was - 5.39 × 10 -18 kJ/mol for the MB and - 1.99 × 10 -18 kJ/mol for the MO at 328.15 K., (© 2024. The study investigated the performance of a novel magnetic hybrid MIL-53(Fe)/Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 composite for removing reactive red 195 (RR195) dye from water using UVc light. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the nanocomposite materials. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of MIL-53(Fe) and TiO 2 in the composite. FT-IR analysis identified carboxyl and Ti-O-Ti groups in the photocatalyst structure. The study evaluated the effects of pH, dye concentration, photocatalyst dosage, and temperature on RR195 photodegradation. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model provided the best fit for the reaction rate. Optimal conditions for an 84 % dye degradation were found at a photocatalyst dose of 15 mg/100 mL, pH 3, dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and 35 °C after 120 minutes of UVc light exposure. Thermodynamic analysis indicated an endothermic reaction with positive values for Δ # H and negative values for Δ # S. The MIL-53(Fe)/Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 composite demonstrated excellent stability and achieved over 90 % dye degradation after five cycles. Novel strategies against parasitic infections are of great importance. Here, we describe a G4 DNA ligand with subnanomolar antiparasitic activity against T. brucei and a remarkable selectivity index (IC 50 MRC-5/ T. brucei ) of 2285-fold. We also correlate the impact of small structural changes to G4 binding activity and antiparasitic activity.

Azo switches are widely employed as essential components in light-responsive systems. Here, we develop an azo-fluorescent switch that is visible light-responsive and its light-responsive processes can be monitored using fluorescence imaging. Visible light irradiation promotes isomerization, accompanied by changes in fluorescence that enable the process to be monitored through fluorescence imaging. Furthermore, we document that the nanocavity size of liposome encapsulated nanoparticles containing azo changes in the isomerization process and show that this change enables construction of a light-responsive nanoplatform for optically controlled release of antimycotics. Also, natural light activation of nanoparticles of the switch loaded with an antimycotic agent causes death of Rhizoctonia solani. The results show that these nanoparticles can double the holding period in comparison to small molecule antimycotics. New azo Schiff base disperse dyes based on a chromene moiety were synthesized by reacting (2-amino-7-hydroxy-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4 H-chromene-3 carbonitrile) and(2-amino-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-7-hydroxy-4 H-chromene-3-carbonitrile), with vanillin and ninhydrin, producing new chromene Schiff base derivatives, which in turn were coupled with 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline diazonium salt to give new 4 azo disperse dyes (1-4). The structures of the prepared dyes were confirmed using elemental analysis, 1 HNMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and IR. The synthesized dyes were applied to polyester and nylon fabrics using different dyeing techniques: high temperature- high pressure, and ultrasonic dyeing methods. The highest K/S values for all investigated dyes were achieved usinga high temperature-high pressure dyeing technique. Also, the color reflectance of all synthesized dyes with different dyeing shades (1%, 2%, and 3%) was obtained. The fastness properties of the dyed samples using the investigated dyes showed good color fastness toward light, washing, rubbing, and perspiration fastness. The presence of a chromene moiety and Schiff base in the investigated dyes promotes a higher antimicrobial activity on nylon and polyester fabrics against all tested bacteria (E. coli gram-negative and Staphylococcus aureus gram-positive) and two fungi, Aspergillus Niger and Candida albicans., (© 2024. In vitro plant cultures are able to remove and metabolise xenobiotics, making them promising tools for decontamination strategies. In this work, we evaluated Brassica napus hairy roots (HRs) to tolerate and remove high concentrations of the azo dye Naphthol Blue-Black (NBB). Experiments were performed using both growing and resting culture systems at different pHs. Reuse of HRs biomass was evaluated in successive decolourisation cycles. Proteomics was applied to understand the molecular responses likely to be involved in the tolerance and removal of NBB. The HRs tolerated up to 480 µg mL -1 NBB, and 100 % removal was achieved at 180 µg mL -1 NBB after 10 days using both culture systems. Interestingly, the HRs are robust enough to be reused, showing 55-60 % removal even after three reuse cycles. The highest dye removal rates were achieved during the first 2 days of incubation, as initial removal is mainly driven by passive processes. Active mechanisms are triggered later by regulating the expression of proteins with different biological functions, mainly those related to xenobiotic metabolism, such as hydrolytic and redox enzymes. Although the anaerobic reduction of azo dyes is ecofriendly, high ammonia consumption remains a significant challenge. This work enriched a mixed nitrogen-fixing bacteria consortium (NFBC) using n-Fe 3 O 4 to promote the anaerobic reduction of methyl orange (MO) without exogenous nitrogen. The enriched NFBC was dominated by Klebsiella (80.77 %) and Clostridium (17.16 %), and achieved a 92.7 % reduction of MO with an initial concentration of 25 mg·L -1 . Compared with the control, the consortium increased the reduction efficiency of MO, cytochrome c content, and electron transport system (ETS) activity by 11.86 %, 89.86 %, and 58.49 %, respectively. When using 2.5 g·L -1 n-Fe 3 O 4 , the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of NFBC were present in a concentration of 85.35 mg·g -1 . The specific reduction rates of MO by NFBC were 2.26 and 3.30 times faster than those of Fe(II) and Fe(III), respectively, while the enrichment factor of the ribosome pathway in NFBC exceeded 0.75. Transcriptome, carbon consumption, and EPS analyses suggested that n-Fe 3 O 4 stimulated carbon metabolism and secreted protein synthesized by the mixed culture. The latter occurred due to the increased activity of consortium and the content of redox substances. These findings demonstrate that n-Fe 3 O 4 promoted the efficiency of mixed nitrogen-fixing bacteria for removing azo dyes from wastewater. Serotonylation has been identified as a novel protein posttranslational modification for decades, where an isopeptide bond is formed between the glutamine residue and serotonin through transamination. Transglutaminase 2 (also known as TGM2 or TGase2) was proven to act as the main "writer" enzyme for this PTM, and a number of key regulatory proteins (including small GTPases, fibronectin, fibrinogen, serotonin transporter, and histone H3) have been characterized as the substrates of serotonylation. However, due to the lack of pan-specific antibodies for serotonylated glutamine, the precise enrichment and proteomic profiling of serotonylation still remain challenging. In our previous research, we developed an aryldiazonium probe to specifically label protein serotonylation in a bioorthogonal manner, which depended on a pH-controlled chemoselective rapid azo-coupling reaction. Here, we report the application of a photoactive aryldiazonium-biotin probe for the global profiling of serotonylation proteome in cancer cells. Thus, over 1,000 serotonylated proteins were identified from HCT 116 cells, many of which are highly related to carcinogenesis. Moreover, a number of modification sites of these serotonylated proteins were determined, attributed to the successful application of our chemical proteomic approach. Overall, these findings provided new insights into the significant association between cellular protein serotonylation and cancer development, further suggesting that to target TGM2-mediated monoaminylation may serve as a promising strategy for cancer therapeutics.

The fluorescent materials have sparked a lot of research interests due to their unique electronic, optical and chemical characteristics. Here, we are intended to present a simple and facile synthesis of novel orange emitting thiazole-pyridone fluorescent tag (TPFT) by a simple diazo coupling reaction and the structural elucidation was carried out by IR, NMR ( 1 H and 13 C), UV-Vis, photoluminescence and HR-MS spectrometry. The solvatochromic behaviour of the TPFT offered crucial information about the formation of hydrazone and azo tautomeric forms. The DFT simulations are computed to calculate HOMO-LUMO energy gap (3.028 eV) of TPFT along with MEP and RDG analyses. Comprehensive LFP visualization is revealed under both normal and UV light conditions (365 nm). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to analyse the electrochemical behaviour of the TPFT-modified glassy carbon electrode (MGCE) and exhibited a lower detection limit of 7.89 × 10 -8  M (S/N = 3) with a linear range of 0.5-8.0 μM for DA detection. The present work involves the synthesis of novel dispersed mono-azo dyes using different coupling components and 2-methoxy-5-nitro aniline as amine through a simple and convenient diazo-coupling method. The structures of the newly synthesized mono azo dyes were confirmed by using various spectral techniques such as 1 H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. At room temperature, the electronic absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra of the synthesized mono azo dyes were recorded with different solvents. The global reactive parameters for the synthesized azo molecules were evaluated by performing density functional theory through the 6-311++G (d, p) basis set. The anti-microbial activities for the synthesized azo compounds were carried out, and the compounds G1 and G2 exhibited good antibacterial and anti-fungal activities. The in silico molecular docking studies of the azo molecules revealed that all the compounds exhibited extraordinary binding affinity as that of the standard drug. Further, the anti-tuberculosis study against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis for the synthesized azo dyes was evaluated, and from the results, it was revealed that the compound G4 showed good sensitivity among the other synthesized azo compounds., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Functional biochar designed with heteroatom doping facilitates the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), triggering both radical and non-radical systems and thus augmenting pollutant degradation efficiency. A sequence of functional biochar, derived from hyperaccumulator (Sedum alfredii) residues, was synthesized via sequential doping with boron and nitrogen. The SABC-B@N-2 exhibited outstanding catalytic effectiveness in activating PMS to degrade the model pollutant, acid orange 7 (K obs  = 0.0655 min -1 ), which was 6.75 times more active than the pristine biochar and achieved notable mineralization efficiency (71.98%) at reduced PMS concentration (0.1 mM). Relative contribution evaluations, using steady-state concentrations combined with electrochemical and in situ Raman analyses, reveal that co-doping with boron and nitrogen alters the reaction pathway, transitioning from PMS activation through multiple reactive oxygen species (ROSs) to a predominantly non-radical process facilitated by electron transfer. Moreover, the previously misunderstood concept that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) plays a central role in the degradation of AO7 has been clarified. Correlation analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate that the distinct BCN configuration, featuring the BC 2 O group and pyridinic-N, is fundamental to the active site. The good combination of high strength and high toughness is a long-standing challenge in the design of robust biomaterials. Meanwhile, robust biomaterials hardly perform fast and significant mechanical property changes under the trigger of light at room temperature. These limit the application of biomaterials in some specific areas. Here, photoresponsive alginate fibers are fabricated by using the designed azobenzene-containing surfactant as flexible contact point for cross-linking polysaccharide chains of alginate, which gain high mechanics through reinforced plastic strain and photo-modulating mechanics through isomerization of azobenzene. By transferring molecular motion into macro-scale mechanical property changes, such alginate fibers achieve reversible photo-modulations on the mechanics. Their breaking strength and toughness can be photo-modulated from 732 MPa and 112 MJ m -3 to 299 MPa and 27 MJ m -3 , respectively, leading to record high mechanical changes among the developed smart biomaterials. With merits of good tolerance to pH and temperature, fast response to light, and good biocompatibility, the reported fibers will be suitable for working in various application scenarios as new smart biomaterials. They were defined using multiple spectral and analytical techniques. With the exception of Ag(I) chelate, all chelates possessed non-electrolytic character. Square pyramidal shape was proposed for V(IV) chelate and Square planar for the other chelates. The analysis of functional group bands of H 3 L and its coordination compounds alludes that H 3 L chelated as neutral tetradentate via nitrogen atoms of azo and azomethine groups, oxygen atom of carbonyl of barbituric acid and OH of the carboxylic group. TG/DTG predicted the thermal behaviors of all compounds. The antibacterial activity of H 3 L and its coordination compounds was conducted against Proteus mirabilis at concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 µg/mL. Ag(I) at 1000 µg/mL, showed the most inhibiting potency against P. mirabilis and registered zone of inhibition of 28.33 ± 0.84 mm and highest biofilm inhibition of 70.31%. At 50 Gy of gamma irradiation, the reducing effect of Ag(I) chelate was improved. The protein interruption of P. mirabilis was greatly interrupted by increasing the concentration of the chaletes. Also, Ag(I) showed the highest cytotoxicity with IC 50 value of 11.5 µg/ mL. The novelty of this study is the synthesis of a new azo-Schiff base and this is almost the first publication of the effect of azo-Schiff ligands against that bacterial strain P. mirabilis., (© 2024. In this study, four adsorbents were developed: layered silicate magadiite material (mag), Hexadecyltrimethylammonium intercalated magadiite (HDTMA@mag), a cross-linked composite of sodium alginate and magadiite (ALG@mag) and a cross-linked composite of sodium alginate and HDTMA@magadiite (ALG@HDTMA@mag). The adsorbents were evaluated for their effectiveness in removing of Methylene Blue (MB) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dyes. The prepared adsorbents were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and zeta potential measurements. Kinetic modeling results indicated that both film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion are useful as rate-determining processes in adsorption for all adsorbents. For both dyes, the Langmuir isotherm model provided a good correlation with the adsorption equilibrium data. ANOVA analysis for the best adsorbent (ALG@HDTMA@mag beads) revealed that MB removal was significantly influenced by the positive individual effects of contact time and ALG@HDTMA@mag dose. However, the individual effect of MB concentration exhibited an antagonistic effect throughout the adsorption process. To maintain human health and purity of drinking water, it is crucial to eliminate harmful chemicals such as nitrophenols and azo dyes, considering their natural presence in the surroundings. In this particular research study, the application of machine learning techniques was employed in order to make an estimation of the performance of reduction catalysis in the context of ecologically detrimental nitrophenols and azo dyes contaminants. The catalyst utilized in the experiment was Ag@CMC, which proved to be highly effective in eliminating various contaminants found in water, like 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The experiments were carefully conducted at various time intervals, and the machine learning procedures used in this study were all employed to forecast catalytic performance. The evaluation of the performance of such algorithms were done by means of Mean Absolute Error. The noteworthy findings of this research indicated that the ADAM and LSTM algorithm exhibited the most favourable performance in the case of toxic compounds i.e. 4-NP. Moreover, the Ag@CMC catalyst demonstrated an impressive reduction efficiency of 98 % against nitrophenol in just 8 min. In the current study, Coccinia grandis fruit extract was used to synthesize calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO NPs) in an economical and environmentally friendly manner. UV-Vis spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the phytoconstituents found in Coccinia grandis fruit extract facilitated the production of CaO NPs by acting as better stabilizing, biodegradable, and reducing agents. The synthesized CG-CaO NPs were also tested for photocatalytic activity in the breakdown of selective dyes such as methyl red, methyl orange, and methylene blue in the presence of sunlight. The degradation percentage was determined by analyzing the color removal rates for all dye components. After 6 h of reaction, the IC 50 values for methyl red, methyl orange, as well as methylene blue dyes were 73, 107, and 133, respectively. The CG-CaO NPs were further evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against specific bacteria and fungi using the agar-well diffusion method. 200 μg/mL CG-CaO NPs inhibited Aspergillus niger, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus mutans, and Staphylococcus aureus at zones of 13, 14, 16, 14, and 15 mM, respectively. Further checkerboard assay confirmed the antagonism effect with gentamicin. Also, Artemia salina toxicity assay showed that the LD50 value of CaO NPs was 400 μg/mL of CaO NPs. Herein, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was combined with an azo coupling reaction and an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes for the detection of histamine. The praseodymium oxide on aluminum alloy was successfully synthesized by the rare-earth-salt-solution boiling bath method and modified by stearic acid. Its surface exhibits a water contact angle (WCA) of 125.0°. Through the azo derivatization reaction with 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTA) diazonium salts, histamine can be converted into the derivatization product with higher Raman activity. The mixture of the derivatization product and β-cyclodextrin-modified Ag nanoparticles (β-CD-AgNPs) were dropped onto the surface of an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes, and dried for SERS measurement. The intensity ratio between the SERS peaks at 1246 cm -1 and 1104 cm -1 (I 1246 /I 1104 ) of the derivatization product was used for the quantification of histamine. Under the selected conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for this method were 7.2 nM (S/N = 3) and 24 nM (S/N = 10), respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of this method for the determination of 1 μM histamine was 6.1 % (n = 20). The method was also successfully used for the determination of histamine in fish samples with recoveries ranging from 92 % to 111 %. The present method is simple, sensitive, reliable, and may provide a new approach for preparing the composite hydrophobic layer that can enhance SERS signals through hydrophobic condensation effect. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which is dominated by free radical (SO 4 •- ) pathway, has a good removal effect on organic pollutants in complex water matrices. In this article, a new catalyst (CFM@NC) was synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization method with chitosan (CS) as N and C precursors, and used to activate PMS to degrade dye wastewater. CFM@NC/PMS system can degrade 50 mg·L -1 rhodamine B by 99.59 % within 30 min, and the degradation rate remains as high as 97.32 % after 5 cycles. It has good complex background matrices, acid-base anti-interference ability (pH 2.6-10.1), universality and reusability. It can degrade methyl orange and methylene blue by >98 % within 30 min. The high efficiency of the composite is due to the fact that CS-modified MoS 2 as a carrier exposes a large number of active sites, which not only disperses CuFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles and improves the stability of the catalyst, but also provides abundant electron rich groups, which promotes the activation of PMS and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). PMS is effectively activated by catalytic sites (Cu + /Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ , pyridine N, pyrrole N, edge sulfur and hydroxyl group) to produce a large number of radicals to attack RhB molecules, causing chromophore cleavage, ring opening, and mineralization. Among them, free radical SO 4 •- is the main ROS for RhB degradation. Synthetic dyes such as azo dyes are significant pollutants in the wastewater released from various textile industries. The low biodegradability and production from synthetic sources with high shelf life make azo dyes a challenging material for degradation. This study used chemically mutated Aspergillus terrus in the laccase production under solid-state fermentation using sugarcane bagasse. Initially, the wild-type strain produced a laccase activity of 4.12 U/mL. Later, the alkaline pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse showed a significant increase in laccase activity by 38.9%. Further, random mutagenesis treatment with 100 mM EMS generated a hyper laccase-producing strain with a 2.3-fold increment in laccase activity compared to the wild-type strain. The enzyme displayed optimal activity at pH 6.5 and 35 °C. The metal ions such as Fe 3+ (29.4 U/mL), Fe 2+ (20.8 U/mL) and Cu 2+ (18.05 U/mL) showed positive effects on laccase activity. The crude laccase was used to bioremediate Congo red, a prominent azo dye used in textile and pharmaceutical industries. The preliminary studies with a crude enzyme displayed 68.86% dye decolourization after 24 h of incubation. Additionally, with Taguchi orthogonal array optimization experiments, the maximal dye decolorization of 78.24% was achieved by maintaining crude enzyme concentration (20 U), dye concentration (25 mg/L) and pH 4.5.

Water pollution has caused problems in coastal areas, rivers, lakes, and other important water sources around the world as a result of inappropriate waste management. Meanwhile, these pollutants are harmful to humans and aquatic life. Textile dye effluent methyl orange (MO) was used in this work for dye degradation studies employing nanocomposites. As a result, the importance of synthesizing pure ZnO and Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles with composites of ZnCo 2 O 4 (zinc cobaltite) nanorods in three various proportions (90:10, 75:25, and 50:50) is emphasized in this study. Many advanced approaches were used to assess the various features of these materials, including size and shape. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to determine the vibrational modes of the materials. The absorption measurements were then carried out using UV-vis spectroscopic techniques, and the photocatalytic breakdown of MO was done under visible light irradiation. The findings revealed that pure materials were inadequate for visible light activity, resulting in decreased degradation efficiencies. Spinel cobaltite structures have potential degradation efficiency under visible light, while ZnCo 2 O 4 (50:50) catalyst has superior degradation efficiency of 59.8% over MO. The crystallite size, morphology, functional group, absorption wavelength, and band gap all play important roles in enhancing the material's photocatalytic activity under visible light. Meanwhile, ZnCo 2 O 4 spinel structures are crucial for increasing charge carriers and reducing electron-hole recombination. Stimuli-responsive block copolymer nanoparticles (NPs) have received close attention in recent years owing to their tremendous application potential in smart materials. Azobenzene-containing NPs are widely studied due to the advantages of light as a stimulus and fast reversible trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene chromophores. However, the inefficient preparation process and difficult reversible transformation of morphologies limit their development. Herein it is demonstrated that the light-triggered reversible swelling behavior of wormlike NPs with high azobenzene content could be realized via confined deformation. These worms are prepared in large quantities via polymerization-induced self-assembly based on the copolymerization of 11-(4-(4-butylphenylazo)phenoxy)undecyl methacrylate (MAAz) and N-(methacryloxy)succinimide (NMAS) monomers. Upon UV/visible light irradiation, the reversible deformation of worms is achieved when the feed molar ratio of NMAS/MAAz is relatively high or via crosslinking using diamines, which leads to the reduction of the photoisomerization efficiency. The diameter variation of the worms is influenced by the amount and types of crosslinkers. Moreover, the scalability of this strategy is further proved by the fabrication of photo- and reductant-responsive crosslinked worms. Highly colored azo dye-contaminated wastewater poses significant environmental threats and requires effective treatment before discharge. The anaerobic azo dye treatment method is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution, while its time-consuming and inefficient processes present substantial challenges for industrial scaling. Thus, the use of iron materials presents a promising alternative. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that systems coupled with iron materials enhance the decolorization efficiency and reduce the processing time. To fully realize the potential of iron materials for anaerobic azo dye treatment, a comprehensive synthesis and evaluation based on individual-related research studies, which have not been conducted to date, are necessary. This review provides, for the first time, an extensive and detailed overview of the utilization of iron materials for azo dye treatment, with a focus on decolorization. It assesses the treatment potential, analyzes the influencing factors and their impacts, and proposes metabolic pathways to enhance anaerobic dye treatment using iron materials. The physicochemical characteristics of iron materials are also discussed to elucidate the mechanisms behind the enhanced bioreduction of azo dyes. To overcome the shortcomings of Fe(Ⅱ)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system including the limited working pH range and large iron sludge production, a Fe-doped alginate (Fe-Alg) catalyst was prepared and combined with hydroxylamine (HA) to continuously activate PDS for the removal of organic pollutants in neutral condition. Due to the strong reductive capability of HA, it could significantly enhance the catalytic capability of Fe-Alg for PDS. The results of characterization suggested that Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) was evenly distributed in Alg through its complexation with carboxyl groups, and the reduction of Fe(Ⅲ) to Fe(Ⅱ) initiated by HA enabled Orange G (OG) to be continuously degraded in the Fe-Alg/HA/PDS system. The results of quenching experiments suggested that S O 4 ∙ - and HO • played a dominant role for OG removal in the Fe-Alg/HA/PDS process. The effect of influence factors (e.g. initial pH, HA concentration, Fe-Alg dose and PDS concentration) and water matrix components (i.e. S O 4 2 - , N O 3 - , Cl - , HC O 3 - and dissolved organic matters (DOM)) on the performance of Fe-Alg/HA/PDS system was systematically investigated. Other refractory organic contaminants, including diclofenac (DCF), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), oxytetracycline (OTC) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) were also efficiently eliminated in Fe-Alg/HA/PDS system, suggesting the feasibility of this system for the treatment of organic pollutants. This work provides a method to optimize Fe(Ⅱ)/PDS system and a novel process applied to degrade refractory pollutants.
