1. Morality in Gaming: Observer Perceptions of Player versus Character Actions

Abstract: The debate on the impact of violent video games and its influence on players continues despite mixed findings. Using the lens of third person perception research, we explored moral judgments of laypersons, those often at the crux of these public debates. Study 1 investigated whether the player or character is perceived by an outside observer as responsible for moral decisions made within the narrative of a violent video game. Study 2 investigated how those perceptions may impact the observers’ perceptions of the player’s future negative behaviors and personality traits. Study 1 and 2 used a 2 (condition: rescuing vs. harvesting) x 2 (role: player vs. character) mixed ANOVA with role as a repeated measure. We created a brief recording of gameplay leading to a moral decision in Bioshock, an interactive, first-person shooter game, shown to participants. Participants were asked to rate perceived morality of player and character actions. Study 1 showed that participants (N = 51) held the observed player more morally responsible for in-game behaviors than the character within the game. Replicating and advancing Study 1, Study 2 (N = 227) showed support for you are what you eat heuristic, in that observers were more likely to view the negative behaviors of the in-game characters as indicators of negative personality traits of the player. These insights are crucial in the broader societal discourse on the potential link between violent video games and real-world aggression

Abstract: The photometric calibration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is a multi-step process which involves data from three different telescopes: the 1.0-m telescope at the US Naval Observatory (USNO), Flagstaff Station, Arizona (which was used to establish the SDSS standard star network); the SDSS 0.5-m Photometric Telescope (PT) at the Apache Point Observatory (APO), NewMexico (which calculates nightly extinctions and calibrates secondary patch transfer fields); and the SDSS 2.5-m telescope at APO (which obtains the imaging data for the SDSS proper). In this paper, we describe the Monitor Telescope Pipeline, MTPIPE, the software pipeline used in processing the data from the single-CCD telescopes used in the photometric calibration of the SDSS (i.e., the USNO 1.0-m and the PT). We also describe transformation equations that convert photometry on the USNO-1.0m u ′ g ′ r ′ i ′ z ′ system to photometry the SDSS 2.5m ugriz system and the results of various validation tests of the MTPIPE software. Further, we discuss the semi-automated PT factory, which runs MTPIPE in the day-to-day standard SDSS operations at Fermilab. Finally, we discuss the use of MTPIPE in current SDSS-related projects, including the Southern u ′ g ′ r ′ i ′ z ′ Standard Star project, the u ′ g ′ r ′ i ′ z ′ Open Star Clusters project, and the SDSS extension (SDSS-II). Abstract: To understand the unique features of germanium sulfide (~60–70 at.% of S) glasses modified with Ga or Sb, the chemical order in these materials is investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained results are correlated with Raman spectroscopy data and verified with quantum chemical calculations. It is shown that in addition to the regular corner-shared and S S-shared [SbS3/2] pyramids and [GeS4/2] tetrahedra, a fraction of these structural units can form edge-shared fragments. The obtained XPS results also support the possibility for [SbS5/2] distorted square pyramids formation in Sb-rich glasses. At higher concentrations of antimony, a tendency to the increased concentration of homopolar bonds is observed.

Abstract: International audience; A photosensitive medium based on amorphous equichalcogenide thin films containing germanium and antimony is proposed with characteristics promising for applications in all-chalcogenide photonics, sensors, and photovoltaics. Optical properties, temperature, and exposure wavelength dependence of DC electrical conductivity are shown to be comparable with those for halide perovskites, which potentially makes amorphous equichalcogenides a very attractive alternative. The change in dark resistivity with temperature is found to follow exponential decay, covering 2 orders of magnitude over a 70 K temperature interval. Light exposure leads to several orders of relative changes in a current when compared to its dark value. A strong photocurrent response is observed under low power (milliwatts range) exposure across the entire 400-1000 nm range of the investigated wavelengths. An increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the photoresponse of the developed material, which is found to vanish at temperatures higher than 120 degrees C when only a few milliwatts of exposure power is used.

Abstract: International audience; Effect of simultaneous Ga and Te addition on the structure of As2Se3 glasses is studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and Raman techniques. It is shown that most of As, Se and Te atoms build a covalent network according to their main valences. Three-fold coordinated As atoms form pyramidal structural units, which are connected via bridges of two-fold coordinated chalcogen atoms (Se, Te). On the other hand, coordination of Ga in glassy samples is found to be greater than three, as expected from its valence, increasing with Te content. Some of the As atoms appear to be converted into four-fold coordinated state at low Te concentration, while a fraction of Te and, possibly, Se atoms are thought to exist in a singly-coordinated (terminal) state in the vicinity of Ga in the samples with higher Te concentration.

Abstract: Phase-change materials, demonstrating a rapid switching between two distinct states with a sharp contrast in electrical, optical or magnetic properties, are vital for modern photonic and electronic devices. To date, this effect is observed in chalcogenide compounds based on Se, Te or both, and most recently in stoichiometric Sb2S3 composition. Yet, to achieve best integrability into modern photonics and electronics, the mixed S/Se/Te phase change medium is needed, which would allow a wide tuning range for such important physical properties as vitreous phase stability, radiation and photo-sensitivity, optical gap, electrical and thermal conductivity, non-linear optical effects, as well as the possibility of structural modification at nanoscale. In this work, a thermally-induced high-to-low resistivity switching below 200 °C is demonstrated in Sb-rich equichalcogenides (containing S, Se and Te in equal proportions). The nanoscale mechanism is associated with interchange between tetrahedral and octahedral coordination of Ge and Sb atoms, substitution of Te in the nearest Ge environment by S or Se, and Sb–Ge/Sb bonds formation upon further annealing. The material can be integrated into chalcogenide-based multifunctional platforms, neuromorphic computational systems, photonic devices and sensors.

Abstract: International audience; To understand the unique physical properties of Ga-Sb-Se glasses, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies are performed on representative compositions within the glass-forming region. The observed peaks in the valence band as well as in Ga, Sb, and Se core-level XPS spectra are related to the main structural building blocks of the covalent network. On the basis of disproportionality equations and quantitative XPS analysis, the Se-Se-Se fragments are shown to exist in the glasses with 65 and 68 at% of Se, whereas the samples with lower Se content are shown to contain a significant concentration of Se-Se bonds instead. Although the majority of Ga atoms are deemed to form fourfold coordinated units, the existence of Ga atoms in threefold coordination, those bonded to other metal, and forming Ga clusters of undissolved Ga are also plausible on the basis of Ga 3d XPS spectrum analysis. Partial or full destruction of antimony selenide pyramids is found in glasses with low Se content.

Abstract: International audience; Novel P-containing bulk BixGa5Ge20P10-xSe45Te20 glasses have been successfully fabricated and studied with optical spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics are investigated, and anti-Arrhenius behavior is observed for the crystallization of some phases in x = 1 glass. The thermal stability of the glass is shown to decrease with an increase in Bi concentration, whereas as the concentration of P increases, the glass stability increases and the glass does not crystallize during regular DSC heating scans. It is found that substitution of P with Bi in glass composition leads to a decrease in the optical gap and increase in its density.

Abstract: The authors would like to thank the region Haute Normandie for their financial support and the acquisition of the Broadband Dielectric Spectrometer. R.G. acknowledges U.S. National Science Foundation (Grant no. DMR-1725188) for the acquisition of PAL spectrometer. The experimental evidence of the increase of activation energy associated with the super Arrhenius behavior governing amorphous polylactide by free volume variations has been obtained through a combination of calorimetric, dielectric, and positron annihilation lifetime measurements. The amount of free volume in polylactide was controlled by the amount of acetyltributylcitrate plasticizer in the composition. Plasticization is shown to decrease both the fragility index and the scale of cooperative motions at the glass transition. The calculations of volume and energetic components of kinetic fragility reveal that the fragility drop is governed by the change in the size of cooperative rearranging region. As a result, direct correlation has been established between cooperativity and activation energy for the entire plasticized polylactide series. It is also shown that cooperativity variations with both temperature and plasticizer content can be simplified as a master curve with free volume.

Abstract: Physical aging induced by an exposure of As–Se, As–S, and Ge–Se glasses to the light of different discrete wavelengths is studied using differential scanning calorimetry technique. The value of this effect is compared to the physical aging caused by natural storage in the dark. It is shown that a choice of As or Ge atoms does not influence significantly the spectral dependence of light-assisted physical aging, whereas substitution of Se with S causes drastic changes in the magnitude of the effect. The mechanism of the observed light-induced phenomena is discussed in terms of transient and metastable displacements of network chalcogen atoms.

Abstract: We have studied the response of mechanically toughened and physically aged polycarbonate primarily using Charpy impact and ultrasonic wave speed measurements. The toughening was conducted through plastic compression on as-received PC. The Charpy impact tests showed anisotropic toughening, both in the absorbed energy and in the mode of fracture. The amount of toughening with plastic compression, even though anisotropic, is centered around the response of annealed and quenched samples, which represent the response of an unaged PC. There was an anisotropic drop in the toughness of some samples with aging. The time of this drop was uncorrelated in the different directions and disappeared for the highly toughened samples. This transition was bimodal and statistically distributed between either a fully ductile or a fully brittle failure. As the samples were prepared in a manner to remove induced residual stresses, this drop in toughening may be associated with an intrinsic anisotropic thermal aging of the deformed material. POLYM. Abstract: Structural relaxation of As-Se glasses through the glass-to-supercooled liquid transition interval is studied with temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that connectivity of glass network and long-term physical ageing change not only the full width at half maximum of the out-of-phase component of complex heat capacity, which is conventionally used for analysis, but also its asymmetry value. The latter is shown to carry very important information on the dynamic heterogeneity in glasses. Raman spectroscopy is used as complementary technique to reveal possible structural rearrangements in the investigated glass network.

Abstract: The United States Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 set a precedent for biodiversity conservation across the globe. 1 A key requirement of protections afforded by the ESA is the accurate delimitation of imperiled species. We present a comparative reference-based taxonomic approach to species delimitation that integrates genomic and morphological data for objectively assessing the distinctiveness of species targeted for protection by governmental agencies. We apply this protocol to the Snail Darter (Percina tanasi), a freshwater fish from the Tennessee River that was discovered in 1973 and declared an endangered species under the ESA in 1975. 2 Concurrently, the Snail Darter's habitat was slated to be destroyed through the construction of the Tellico Dam by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), 3 , 4 inspiring nationwide protests advocating for the suspension of the federal project. This David versus Goliath struggle between supporters of the 3-inch fish and the TVA culminated in the first major legal conflict over protections afforded by the ESA, the US Supreme Court case Hill v. TVA, 437 U.S. 153 (1978), with a 6 to 3 ruling in favor of protecting the Snail Darter and interrupting the completion of the Tellico Dam. Here, we integrate multiple lines of evidence in a comparative framework to demonstrate that despite its legacy, the Snail Darter is not a distinct species but is a population of the Stargazing Darter (Percina uranidea) described in 1887. Genetically-determined deficiency or reduced activity of the enzyme (alpha - Galactosidase; α-Gal) leads to the accumulation of sphingolipids in the lysosomes of various cell types, including the heart, kidneys, skin, eyes, central nervous system, and digestive system, triggering damage, leading to the failure of vital organs, and resulting in progressive disability and premature death. FD diagnostics currently depend on costly and time-intensive genetic tests and enzymatic analysis, often leading to delayed or inaccurate diagnoses, which contribute to rapid disease progression. In this research, mid-infrared Fiber Evanescent Wave Spectroscopy (FEWS) supported by statistical analysis and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is shown to be an innovative and reliable method to detect globotriaosylsphingosine (Lyso-Gb3) FD biomarker in urine and serum samples by monitoring infrared spectra alone. ML showed a high selectivity for FD in the spectral range of Amide A and Amide I in blood serum, and α-D-galactosyl residues of glycosphingolipids in urine. Abstract: Family conflict has been demonstrated as a risk factor impacting children's mental health and behaviors; however, the mechanisms underlying these connections are unclear. Focusing on 1622 children from low-income families (51.4% boys, 38.3% White, 35.5% Hispanic/Latino, 22.1% African American, 4.1% other), the current study examines the role that maternal depression and parenting behaviors play in the associations between family conflict in early childhood and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors in early adolescence. Family conflict was positively associated with maternal depression at age 3 and detached parenting at age 5; however, maternal depression was linked to increased child internalizing and externalizing behaviors, and detached parenting was associated with decreased behavioral outcomes. Maternal depression at age 3 and intrusive parenting at age 5 successively mediated the association between family conflict and child externalizing. Multi-group analysis indicated different indirect paths of parenting behaviors in boys and girls. Specifically, in boys, the indirect effect of detached parenting on the links between family conflict and externalizing and internalizing behaviors was sustained. In girls, maternal depression and intrusive parenting sequentially explained the link between family conflict and externalizing behaviors. The findings highlighted the importance of addressing family well-being and parenting support, especially for children from low-income families.

Abstract: Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3), a serine-threonine kinase with two isoforms (α and β) is implicated in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Recently, we reported the isoform-specific role of GSK-3 in T2D using homozygous GSK-3α/β knockout mice. Although the homozygous inhibition models are idealistic in a preclinical setting, they do not mimic the inhibition seen with pharmacological agents. Hence, in this study, we sought to investigate the dose-response effect of GSK-3α/β inhibition in the pathogenesis of obesity-induced T2D. Specifically, to gain insight into the dose-response effect of GSK-3 isoforms in T2D, we generated tamoxifen-inducible global GSK-3α/β heterozygous mice. GSK-3α/β heterozygous and control mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 16 wk. At baseline, the body weight and glucose tolerance of GSK-3α heterozygous and controls were comparable. In contrast, at baseline, a modest but significantly higher body weight (higher lean mass) was seen in GSK-3β heterozygous compared with controls. Post-HFD, GSK-3α heterozygous and controls displayed a comparable phenotype. However, GSK-3β heterozygous were significantly protected against obesity-induced glucose intolerance. Interestingly, the improved glucose tolerance in GSK-3β heterozygous animals was dampened with chronic HFD-feeding, likely due to significantly higher fat mass and lower lean mass in the GSK-3β animals. These findings suggest that GSK-3β is the dominant isoform in glucose metabolism. However, to avail the metabolic benefits of GSK-3β inhibition, it is critical to maintain a healthy weight. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The precise isoform-specific role of GSK-3 in obesity-induced glucose intolerance is unclear. To overcome the limitations of pharmacological GSK-3 inhibitors (not isoform-specific) and tissue-specific genetic models, in the present study, we created novel inducible heterozygous mouse models of GSK-3 inhibition that allowed us to delete the gene globally in an isoform-specific and temporal manner to determine the isoform-specific role of GSK-3 in obesity-induced glucose intolerance.

Abstract: Sexual violence is a public health threat in the USA and past research has found that survivors who seek support and disclose their experiences tend to have greater positive outcomes, such as positive life changes, reduced post-traumatic stress disorder, and fewer depressive symptoms. While social media have become an important site of disclosure, over-moderation of sex and sexuality on social media platforms due to the passing of the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act may inadvertently lead to the removal of survivors' posts and hinder their ability to build communities of support. In line with critical discourse analysis, this study examined the discursive strategies utilized in online disclosures made by sexual violence survivors on the social media platform TikTok to determine if they make use of algospeak, a neologism referring to the strategy of misspelling words or using coded language to avoid detection and deletion by site moderators. Analysis of the data indicated that sexual violence survivors do make use of algospeak, as well as direct and indirect language, to share their disclosures, and that, while TikTok claims to provide space for survivors' stories, its guidelines and approach to language about sex and sexuality may create barriers to building supportive communities., Competing Interests: Declarations. Abstract: The role of the skin microbiome in resistance and susceptibility of wildlife to fungal pathogens has been examined from a taxonomic perspective but skin microbial function, in the context of fungal infection, has yet to be studied. Our objective was to understand effects of a bat fungal pathogen site infection status and course of invasion on skin microbial function. We sampled seven hibernating colonies of Myotis lucifugus covering three-time points over the course of Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) invasion and white nose syndrome (pre-invasion, epidemic, and established). Our results support three new hypotheses about Pd and skin functional microbiome: (1) there is an important effect of Pd invasion stage, especially at the epidemic stage; (2) disruption by the fungus at the epidemic stage could decrease anti-fungal functions with potential negative effects on the microbiome and bat health; (3) the collection site might have a larger influence on microbiomes at the pre-invasion stage rather than at epidemic and established stages. Abstract: Mercury (Hg) concentrations and their associated toxicological effects in terrestrial ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico are largely unknown. Compounding this uncertainty, a large input of organic matter from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill may have altered Hg cycling and bioaccumulation dynamics. To test this idea, we quantified blood concentrations of total mercury (THg) in Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) and Marsh Rice Rats (Oryzomys palustris) in marshes west and east of the Mississippi River in 2015 and 2016. We also tested for a difference in THg concentrations between oiled and non-oiled sites. To address the potential confounding effect of diet variation on Hg transfer, we used stable nitrogen (δ 15 N) and carbon (δ 13 C) isotope values as proxies of trophic position and the source of primary production, respectively. Our results revealed that five to six years after the spill, THg concentrations were not higher in sites oiled by the spill compared to non-oiled sites. In both species, THg was higher at sites east of the Mississippi River compared to control and oiled sites, located west. In Seaside Sparrows but not in Marsh Rice Rats, THg increased with δ 15 N values, suggesting Hg trophic biomagnification. Overall, even in sites with the most elevated THg, concentrations were generally low. In Seaside Sparrows, THg concentrations were also lower than previously reported in this and other closely related passerines, with only 7% of tested birds exceeding the lowest observed effect concentration associated with toxic effects across bird species (0.2 µg/g ww). The factors associated with geographic heterogeneity in Hg exposure remain uncertain. Abstract: Background: Traveling to meet sexual partners and substance use are associated with increased risk of infectious disease. It is important to understand what factors may increase substances use or increased infection transmission risk (IITR) sexual behaviors among rural LGBTQ+ individuals. Objective: This study investigates substance use and sexual behaviors associated with increased infection transmission risk among rural LGBTQ+ individuals, and how these are associated with relationship type (friends or romantic partners) and travel distance. Methods: Participants (18 years+, identify as LGBTQ+, and provided a $25 gift card) were recruited from Illinois (25 counties), in 2021. Data included demographics, sexual and drug use behaviors, and assessed how these behaviors varied by relationship type and distance traveled (e.g. when meeting friends out-of-state). Results: The 398 participants were 79.1% White and 12.3% Black. By orientation, 29% heterosexual, 36% gay/lesbian, and 35% bisexual/other. By identity, 43% cisgender male, 51% cisgender female, and 6% genderqueer/other. Alcohol use while visiting out-of-state friends was more frequent among transgender (vs cisgender men; OR = 9.686, 95% confidence interval = 2.123-44.19), and individuals traveling > 1/month (all p < .050). Infection-related sexual behaviors while visiting out-of-state romantic partners was more frequent among prescription medication misuse (all p < .050) and traveling > 1/week (vs < 1/month; OR = 3.399, 95% CI = 1.037-11.144). Conclusion: This study of rural LGBTQ+ identified that alcohol use was associated with travel to visit out-of-state romantic partners, and prescription medication misuse increased infection-related sexual behavior during out-of-state travel. Health professionals can develop substance use and increased infection transmission risk sexual behavior interventions on gender minority groups in rural areas and target those who are traveling.

Distribution comparison was by t -test and chi-square, risk prediction by logistic regression, and significance assumed at P < .050., Results: By orientation, participants were: 35.3% gay, 16.5% lesbian, and 45.8% bisexual plus; and by identity they were: 49.4% cisgender, 25.9% transgender, and 24.8% other identity. Survey item responses ranged from 95%-99%. Compared to gay men, lesbians and bisexual plus individuals more frequently reported medical bill payment difficulty (58.3% and 57.9% vs 25.0%; P = .020) and more past month days of poor mental health (19.4 and 15.8 vs 10.6; P = .018). Compared to heterosexual and other identity, transgender individuals less frequently reported having a routine medical provider (72.7% vs 92.7% and 95.0%; P = .037) and more frequently reported past healthcare denial (45.5% vs 17.5% and 18.8%; P = .042). Current health was associated with medical bill payment ability (OR = .33, 95% CI = .13-.86) and respectful treatment by healthcare administrators (OR = 3.90, 95% CI = 1.34-11.35) and clinicians (OR = 3.82, 95% CI = 1.39-10.47). 30. A novel heuristic of rigid docking scores positively correlates with full-length nuclear receptor LRH-1 regulation.

Abstract: The nuclear receptor Liver Receptor Homolog-1 (LRH-1, NR5A2 ) is a ligand-regulated transcription factor and validated drug target for several human diseases. LRH-1 activation is regulated by small molecule ligands, which bind to the ligand binding domain (LBD) within the full-length LRH-1. We recently identified 57 compounds that bind LRH-1, and unexpectedly found these compounds regulated either the isolated LBD, or the full-length LRH-1 in cells, with little overlap. Here, we correlated compound binding energy from a single rigid-body scoring function with full-length LRH-1 activity in cells. Although docking scores of the 57 hit compounds did not correlate with LRH-1 regulation in wet lab assays, a subset of the compounds had large differences in binding energy docked to the isolated LBD vs . full-length LRH-1, which we used to empirically derive a new metric of the docking scores we call "ΔΔG". Initial regressions, correlations and contingency analyses all suggest compounds with high ΔΔG values more frequently regulated LRH-1 in wet lab assays. We then docked all 57 compounds to 18 separate crystal structures of LRH-1 to obtain averaged ΔΔG values for each compound, which robustly and reproducibly associated with full-length LRH-1 activity in cells. Network analyses on the 18 crystal structures of LRH-1 suggest unique communication paths exist between the subsets of LRH-1 crystal structures that produced high vs. low ΔΔG values, identifying a structural relationship between ΔΔG and the position of Helix 6, a previously established regulatory helix important for LRH-1 regulation. Together, these data suggest rigid-body computational docking can be used to quickly calculate ΔΔG, which positively correlated with the ability of these 57 hit compounds to regulate full-length LRH-1 in cell-based assays. Abstract: Often the barriers that arise in healthcare are due to healthcare professionals lack of education, exposure, and transphobia. Another potential barrier is due to geographical location of living in a rural area where there is a lack of healthcare services. This phenomenological study investigated barriers faced by transgender individuals who were transitioning in a rural area, focusing particularly on institutional barriers present in the healthcare system. Transgender individuals were recruited using convenience and snowball sampling. Data were collected via in-depth, face-to-face interviews in a rural area of the Midwest in the United States ( n = 8). Transgender participants discussed themes of discrimination among healthcare providers based on gender. Participants reported gender markers as a barrier for healthcare services, such as inappropriate or incomplete response options on billing and medical forms. Participants perceived discrimination among gynecology, psychiatry, and medical emergency staff, and pharmacists. Overall, transgender individuals experienced mistreatment while transitioning in a rural area which created issues with participants' progress in transitioning. This study shows that education for all types of healthcare providers is needed regarding transgender health. Particularly in rural areas-many of which continue to lack essential healthcare services for the general population-the transgender population might not receive the culturally sensitive and appropriate attention they require.

32. Sexual Violence and Revictimization in Rural LGBTQ+ Communities.

Abstract: Previous research has shown there is a high prevalence of sexual violence (SV) and revictimization among the LGBTQ+ community. Little is known about the prevalence of SV and revictimization among rural LGBTQ+ individuals. This study investigates patterns of revictimization and the prevalence of SV among sexual and gender minority individuals. Less resources, services, and more social isolation in rural areas may exacerbate SV. The Illinois Cohort Study is a longitudinal cohort made up of LGBTQ+ individuals with recruitment from June to September 2022. Individuals that have met the screening criteria were delivered a series of surveys for completion, after obtaining consent and given an incentive for their participation. Survey questions on intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and revictimization were collected and described using descriptive statistics. Rural areas were defined as having a population less than 50,000. A total of N = 74 participants responded to the third survey. There were 46% of participants who identified as non-cisgender, and roughly 48% of participants identified as bisexual, pansexual, or other. There were 58% of participants who experienced some form of SV. Factors significantly associated with SV included age, gender, and total Adverse Childhood Experience score ( p < .001, .0278, and .002, respectively). There were 70% of participants who reported experiencing SV more than once. Those who reported being sexually victimized more than once reported the abuse lasting an average of 11 years. There were 46% of participants who felt unsafe or trapped in their current relationship. Lesbian (31%) or bisexual (31%) participants were significantly more likely to report feeling afraid in their relationship ( p = .041). This study showed that in rural areas, SV is prevalent among LGBTQ+ individuals. 33. The Relationship between Gender Identity and Gender Centrality among Transgender, Cisgender, Nonbinary, and Intersex Individuals.

Abstract: This study highlights the relationship between gender identity and gender centrality, including self-reported measures of the centrality of masculinity and femininity in individuals' interactional expression, physical expression, interests, and feeling masculine or feminine. This is a secondary data analysis of a larger study (The 2019 Pleasure Study). In this analysis, it was found that there is a notable relationship between gender identity and levels of gender centrality. Transgender men and transgender women reported higher levels of gender identity centrality ("How important is your gender identity to the way you think about yourself?") than cisgender men and women. Nonbinary people and intersex individuals reported higher levels of gender identity centrality than cisgender men and cisgender women, but lower levels than transgender men and transgender women. In an average of centrality measures ("How important are how masculine/feminine your physical expression, interactional expression, feelings, and interests are?" ), trans women had the highest average centrality scores while cis men had the lowest.

34. Molecular-Network Transformations in Tetra-Arsenic Triselenide Glassy Alloys Tuned within Nanomilling Platform.

Abstract: Polyamorphic transformations driven by high-energy mechanical ball milling (nanomilling) are recognized in a melt-quenched glassy alloy of tetra-arsenic triselenide (As 4 Se 3 ). We employed XRPD analysis complemented by thermophysical heat-transfer and micro-Raman spectroscopy studies. A straightforward interpretation of the medium-range structural response to milling-driven reamorphization is developed within a modified microcrystalline model by treating diffuse peak-halos in the XRPD patterns of this alloy as a superposition of the Bragg-diffraction contribution from inter-planar correlations, which are supplemented by the Ehrenfest-diffraction contribution from inter-atomic and/or inter-molecular correlations related to derivatives of thioarsenide As 4 Se n molecules, mainly dimorphite-type As 4 Se 3 ones. These cage molecules are merely destroyed under milling, facilitating the formation of a polymerized network with enhanced calorimetric heat-transfer responses. Disruption of intermediate-range ordering, due to weakening of the FSDP (the first sharp diffraction peak), accompanied by an enhancement of extended-range ordering, due to fragmentation of structural entities responsible for the SSDP (the second sharp diffraction peak), occurs as an interplay between medium-range structural levels in the reamorphized As 4 Se 3 glass alloy. Nanomilling-driven destruction of thioarsenide As 4 Se n molecules followed by incorporation of their remnants into a glassy network is proved by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Microstructure scenarios of the molecular-to-network polyamorphic transformations caused by the decomposition of the As 4 Se 3 molecules and their direct destruction under grinding are recognized by an ab initio quantum-chemical cluster-modeling algorithm.

Abstract: Three glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic subunits, that hydrolyze glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) to glucose and inorganic phosphate, have been identified, designated G6PC1-3, but only G6PC1 and G6PC2 have been implicated in the regulation of fasting blood glucose (FBG). Elevated FBG has been associated with multiple adverse clinical outcomes, including increased risk for type 2 diabetes and various cancers. Therefore, G6PC1 and G6PC2 inhibitors that lower FBG may be of prophylactic value for the prevention of multiple conditions. The studies described here characterize a G6PC2 inhibitor, designated VU0945627, previously identified as Compound 3. We show that VU0945627 preferentially inhibits human G6PC2 versus human G6PC1 but activates human G6PC3. VU0945627 is a mixed G6PC2 inhibitor, increasing the Km but reducing the Vmax for G6P hydrolysis. PyRx virtual docking to an AlphaFold2-derived G6PC2 structural model suggests VU0945627 binds two sites in human G6PC2. Mutation of residues in these sites reduces the inhibitory effect of VU0945627. VU0945627 does not inhibit mouse G6PC2 despite its 84% sequence identity with human G6PC2. Mutagenesis studies suggest this lack of inhibition of mouse G6PC2 is due, in part, to a change in residue 318 from histidine in human G6PC2 to proline in mouse G6PC2. Surprisingly, VU0945627 still inhibited glucose cycling in the mouse islet-derived βTC-3 cell line. Studies using intact mouse liver microsomes and PyRx docking suggest that this observation can be explained by an ability of VU0945627 to also inhibit the G6P transporter SLC37A4. An online questionnaire, developed from an extensive literature review covering fundamental AI knowledge and its role in sustainable leadership, was distributed to students majoring and minoring in healthcare administration. This methodological approach garnered participation from 62 students, providing insights and perspectives crucial for the study's objectives., Findings: The research revealed that while a significant majority of healthcare administration students (70%) recognize the potential of AI in fostering sustainable leadership in healthcare, only 30% feel adequately prepared to work in AI-integrated environments. Abstract: Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant changes in health care delivery worldwide, including the widespread adoption of telemedicine. This study examines the prevalence of telemedicine use among cancer survivors in the United States based on rurality and investigates its association with telemedicine use. Methods: The 2021 National Health Interview Survey was used to analyze telemedicine use among cancer survivors during the pandemic. Telemedicine use was the primary outcome, and rurality was the main exposure. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the association. Results: Out of 27,500 eligible cancer survivors, 51.6% reported using telemedicine in 2021. Telemedicine usage varied across rural areas, with 41.4% of rural cancer survivors using telemedicine compared with 57.5% of cancer survivors in large metropolitan areas ( p < 0.001). Rural cancer survivors had significantly lower odds of using telemedicine during the pandemic compared with large metropolitan cancer survivors. Cancer survivors residing in rural areas were 0.56 times less likely (odds ratio [OR] = 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.41-0.75), and those residing in medium and small metropolitan areas were 0.69 times less likely (OR = 0.69; 95% CI = 0.56-0.86) to report telemedicine use compared with cancer survivors in large metropolitan areas. Conclusions: Substantial disparities in telemedicine use were observed between rural and urban areas among cancer survivors. Rural cancer survivors were less likely to utilize telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ensuring equitable access to telemedicine requires continued reimbursement for telemedicine services, along with additional efforts to improve access to and utilization of health care for rural cancer survivors.

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the benefits of self-compassion on sleep difficulties extend to a sample of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college athletes, and to examine the unique contributions of two possible pathways that have been separately evidenced to underlie the self-compassion and sleep difficulties association in non-athlete populations - namely perceived stress and rumination. A total of 412 NCAA Division I college athletes (M = 19.88, SD = 1.50) from 16 different West, Midwest, South, and North-eastern universities completed the Self-Compassion Scale, Perceived Stress Scale-10, Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Findings indicated that self-compassion is associated with fewer sleep difficulties in college athletes, and that lower levels of perceived stress and rumination are independent mechanisms through which self-compassion is associated with sleep difficulties. Further, a comparison of the indirect effects revealed that perceived stress had a significantly stronger indirect effect on the relation between self-compassion and sleep difficulties than rumination. 39. The Joint Operations of Teacher-Student and Peer Relationships on Classroom Engagement among Low-Achieving Elementary Students: A Longitudinal Multilevel Study.

Abstract: Although both teacher-student relationship (TSR) and peer relationship (PR) have been found important for the development of students' classroom engagement, little research has been done regarding the joint operations of these two factors. Guided by a developmental systems framework, this study examined longitudinal between-person and within-person associations between TSR/ PR and classroom engagement in a sample of 784 low-achieving students in the first three years of elementary school. A multidimensional approach was used to distinguish positive and negative dimensions of TSR, as well as peer liking and disliking. At the between-person level, results showed that students' classroom engagement was positively predicted by positive TSR and PR liking and was negatively predicted by negative TSR and PR disliking. Both positive and negative TSR interacted with PR disliking at the between-person level, such that the associations between positive/negative TSR and classroom engagement were stronger for students with lower levels of PR disliking. At the within-person level, changes in classroom engagement were associated with contemporaneous year-to-year changes in positive/negative TSR and PR disliking. No within-person level interaction effects were found. Cross-level interaction showed that the effects of within-person negative TSR on classroom engagement were stronger for students with lower overall levels of PR disliking. Abstract: Phosphoinositides are essential signaling molecules. The PI5P4K family of phosphoinositide kinases and their substrates and products, PI5P and PI4,5P 2 , respectively, are emerging as intracellular metabolic and stress sensors. We performed an unbiased screen to investigate the signals that these kinases relay and the specific upstream regulators controlling this signaling node. We found that the core Hippo pathway kinases MST1/2 phosphorylated PI5P4Ks and inhibited their signaling in vitro and in cells. We further showed that PI5P4K activity regulated several Hippo- and YAP-related phenotypes, specifically decreasing the interaction between the key Hippo proteins MOB1 and LATS and stimulating the YAP-mediated genetic program governing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Mechanistically, we showed that PI5P interacted with MOB1 and enhanced its interaction with LATS, thereby providing a signaling connection between the Hippo pathway and PI5P4Ks. These findings reveal how these two important evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways are integrated to regulate metazoan development and human disease.

41. Multidimensional profiles of head start preschoolers' moral self-concept predict subsequent, but not concurrent, aggression.

Abstract: The moral self-concept (MSC) describes how children view themselves as moral agents. Research suggests that the MSC may relate to moral behavior, yet little is known about how MSC relates to moral behavior in preschoolers. One hundred six low-income children ( M age = 52.78 months, SD = 6.61 months) and their teachers participated in this study. In the fall, children completed a MSC puppet task measure. In the fall and spring, teachers reported via children's survey prosocial behavior and aggressive behavior. We used a person-centered approach to identify profiles of MSC, which revealed two profiles of behavior: c omforting prosocials and h elpful aggressors. Comforting prosocials showed a moderate preference for comforting, a slight preference for helping, and a slight preference for avoiding aggression. Helpful aggressors had a moderate aversion to comforting, a strong preference for helping, and a slight preference for aggressive behavior. Subsequent analysis of covariance analysis revealed that MSC profiles did not differ in concurrent behavior but did differ in behavior 6 months later. The comforting prosocial group participated in more aggression than the helpful aggressors. Additionally, analysis of covariance analysis of change in aggression scores over time showed that comforting prosocials aggression increased, while helpful aggressors aggression decreased. Both groups over time decreased in prosocial behavior, but to different degrees. Overall, findings reveal that the MSC in preschoolers may relate to future not concurrent moral behavior.

42. Multifactorial Exercise Intervention Decreases Falls Risk in High-risk and Low-risk Older Adults.

Abstract: Background: Each year, 1 in 4 people over the age of 65 years of age will experience a fall. It is important to identify and address modifiable risk factors that are associated with falls in adults at high and low risk for falls., Hypothesis: Falls risk improves in both high-risk and low-risk participants with the implementation of Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL)., Study Design: Cohort study., Level of Evidence: Level 3., Methods: Seventy-eight older adults (age, 70.9 ± 5.1 years) were included in this study and categorized into high risk and low risk for falling based on the falls risk score from the Physiological Profile Assessment. High risk was defined as having a preintervention falls risk score >1, whereas low risk was defined as having a preintervention falls risk score <1. Both groups had the same 10-week intervention. A multivariate analysis of covariance was used to compare differences pre- and postintervention, using preintervention falls risk score as covariate., Results: Results showed that regardless of preintervention falls risk, participants showed significant improvements in right and left knee extensor strength and sit-to-stand after participation in the 10-week SAIL program. Also, noteworthy is that 15 participants who were considered at high risk for falling preintervention were considered low risk for falling postintervention., Conclusion: The positive outcomes noted on modifiable risk factors suggest SAIL can be beneficial for decreasing falls risk in older adults, regardless of risk of falling, using a multifactorial exercise intervention. Our results also showed that it was possible for participants not only to improve falls risk but to improve to such a degree that they change from high risk to low risk of falling., Clinical Relevance: Our results demonstrated that SAIL was effective in improving overall fall risk after a 10-week intervention. Abstract: White-nose syndrome (WNS) is an infectious disease that disrupts hibernation in bats, leading to premature exhaustion of fat stores. Though we know WNS does impact reproduction in hibernating female bats, we are unsure how these impacts are exacerbated by local climate factors. We compiled data from four southeastern U.S. states and used generalized linear mixed effects models to compare effects of WNS, pre-hibernation climate variables, and winter duration on the number of reproductive females in species across the range of WNS susceptibility. We predicted we would see a decline in the number of reproductive females in WNS-susceptible species, with the effect exaggerated by longer winter durations and pre-hibernation climate variables that lead to reductions in foraging. We found that the number of reproductive females in WNS-susceptible species was positively correlated with pre-hibernation local climate conditions conducive to foraging; however, WNS-susceptible species experienced an overall decline with the presence of WNS and as winter duration increased. 44. Equimolar As 4 S 4 /Fe 3 O 4 Nanocomposites Fabricated by Dry and Wet Mechanochemistry: Some Insights on the Magnetic-Fluorescent Functionalization of an Old Drug.

Abstract: Multifunctional nanocomposites from an equimolar As 4 S 4 /Fe 3 O 4 cut section have been successfully fabricated from coarse-grained bulky counterparts, employing two-step mechanochemical processing in a high-energy mill operational in dry- and wet-milling modes (in an aqueous solution of Poloxamer 407 acting as a surfactant). As was inferred from the X-ray diffraction analysis, these surfactant-free and surfactant-capped nanocomposites are β -As 4 S 4 -bearing nanocrystalline-amorphous substances supplemented by an iso-compositional amorphous phase (a-AsS), both principal constituents (monoclinic β -As 4 S 4 and cubic Fe 3 O 4 ) being core-shell structured and enriched after wet milling by contamination products (such as nanocrystalline-amorphous zirconia), suppressing their nanocrystalline behavior. The fluorescence and magnetic properties of these nanocomposites are intricate, being tuned by the sizes of the nanoparticles and their interfaces, dependent on storage after nanocomposite fabrication. A specific core-shell arrangement consisted of inner and outer shell interfaces around quantum-confined nm-sized β -As 4 S 4 crystallites hosting a-AsS, and the capping agent is responsible for the blue-cyan fluorescence in as-fabricated Poloxamer capped nanocomposites peaking at ~417 nm and ~442 nm, while fluorescence quenching in one-year-aged nanocomposites is explained in terms of their destroyed core-shell architectures. The magnetic co-functionalization of these nanocomposites is defined by size-extended heterogeneous shells around homogeneous nanocrystalline Fe 3 O 4 cores, composed by an admixture of amorphous phase (a-AsS), nanocrystalline-amorphous zirconia as products of contamination in the wet-milling mode, and surfactant.

45. Radiation-induced modification effects in covalent-network glass formers: Phenomenological description within unified configuration-enthalpy model.

Abstract: Externally-induced modification activated by high-energy excitation such as γ-irradiation from 60 Co source is analyzed in chalcogenide glasses in terms of radiation-structural and glass-relaxation metastability, at the example of sulphides (including stoichiometric arsenic trisulphide, As 2 S 3 ) and selenides. Unified configuration-enthalpy model evolving conjugated configuration-coordinate (free energy in dependence on configuration coordinate) and thermodynamic enthalpy (temperature deviations in enthalpy, configurational entropy or free volume) diagrams is proposed to describe metastability in these glasses under external influences, such as (1) physical ageing, (2) irradiation, (3) thermal annealing, (4) rejuvenation, and their combinations. The model predicts glass stabilization in the ground state composed of partial sub-states related to (i) irradiation, (ii) rejuvenation, (iii) annealing, as well as (iv) ideal-glass deep states, connected by over-barrier jumping and through-barrier tunneling transitions. Abstract: Golgi-derived microtubule (MT) arrays are essential to directionally persistent cell migration and vesicle transport. In this study, we have examined MT nucleation sites in two breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, with the hypothesis that only the migratory invasive MDA-MB-231 cells exhibit MTs originating from the Golgi. MTs were disassembled and allowed to slightly regrow so individual nucleation sites could then be observed via fluorescently tagged antibodies (α-tubulin, cis-Golgi marker GM130, and EB1-a MT plus-end binding protein) and confocal microscopy. To determine if MT nucleation at the Golgi is more apparent during active migration compared to when cells are stationary, cells were treated with the chemoattractant epidermal growth factor (EGF) and examined for colocalizations between the Golgi, α-tubulin, and γ-tubulin. Images were analyzed qualitatively for color overlap, and quantitatively using Manders Colocalization Coefficients. Differences between groups were tested for significance using one-way analysis of variances and Tukey's post hoc test. Significantly higher colocalization values (coloc) in the highly invasive MDA-MB-231 cells (α-tubulin coloc GM130 = 0.39, GM130 coloc α-tubulin = 0.82, GM130 coloc EB1 = 0.24, and EB1 coloc GM130 = 0.38) compared to the weakly invasive MCF-7 cells (0.15, 0.08, 0.02, and 0.16, respectively) were observed. EGF-treated cells exhibited higher colocalization values than control cells for three of the four protein combinations tested, but EGF-treated MDA-MB-231 cells exhibited significantly higher values (α-tubulin coloc GM130 = 0.20, GM130 coloc α-tubulin = 0.89, and γ-tubulin coloc GM130 = 0.47) than both control groups as well as the EGF-treated MCF-7 cells. Results support the hypothesis that MT nucleation at the Golgi occurs more frequently in the invasive MDA-MB-231 cell line compared to the weakly invasive MCF-7 cells. The presence or absence of Golgi-derived MTs may help to explain the difference in migratory potential commonly exhibited by these two cell lines., (© 2023 The Authors. 47. Perceived Barriers and Strategies to Increasing the BSN-Prepared Nursing Workforce.

Abstract: Abstract: Care provided by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)-prepared Registered Nurses (RNs) has been shown to lead to more positive patient outcomes compared to care provided by non-BSN-prepared RNs. A Fall 2021 study explored barriers of requiring a BSN degree of staff nurses from the perspective of hospital and long-term care facility nurse leaders in Tennessee (N = 89), strategies to increase the number of nurses with BSNs, and association between leadership goals and the number of BSN-prepared nurses in the facilities. Seven barriers to requiring the BSN and nine strategies to increase BSNs were identified. 48. The effects of education on mortality: Evidence using college expansions.

Abstract: This paper explores the long-run health benefits of education for longevity. Using mortality data from the Social Security Administration (1988-2005) linked to geographic locations in the 1940-census data, we exploit changes in college availability across cohorts in local areas. Our treatment on the treated calculations suggest increases in longevity between 1.3 and 2.7 years. Some further analyses suggest the results are not driven by pre-tends, endogenous migration, and other time-varying local confounders. This phenomenological study asked 15 incoming first-semester nursing students about their perceptions of the nursing profession. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed, and three themes emerged: Vicarious Pride, Raw Gratitude, and Help Is Coming. With a need to attract more applicants and graduate more nurses, nursing schools might use these identified concepts to recruit and motivate prospective students. 50. Early-Life Economic Conditions and Old-Age Male Mortality: Evidence from Historical County-Level Bank Deposit Data.

Abstract: This paper studies the long-run mortality effects of in-utero and early-life economic conditions. We examine how local economic conditions experienced during the Great Depression, proxied by county-level banking deposits during in-utero and first years of life, influence old-age longevity. We find that a one-standard-deviation rise in per capita bank deposits is associated with an approximately 1.7 month increase in males' longevity at old age. Additional analyses comparing state-level versus county-level economic measures provide insight on the importance of controlling for local-level confounders and exploiting more granular measures when exploring the relationship between early-life conditions and later-life mortality.
