Ateneo de Náucratis es la fuente principal del fragmento 565 (ed. Radt) de Sófocles. Desde que fuera referenciado en el Banquete de los eruditos, el fragmento se ha considerado indigno del género trágico debido a la representación de elementos risibles y jocosos en un ambiente serio y solemne. Con todo, en este artículo aportamos nuevos datos que reivindican la solemnidad de estos versos que, en nuestra opinión, se ajustan perfectamente al estilo dramatúrgico esperable en su autor., Athenaeus of Naucratis is the main source for Sophocles' fragment 565 (ed. Radt). Ever since it was referenced in The Deipnosophists, the fragment has been considered unworthy of the tragic genre, given the representation of comic and playful elements in a serious and solemn atmosphere. However, in this article we provide new data that vindicates the solemnity of these verses, which, in our opinion, perfectly fit the expected dramaturgical style of the author.

This chapter deals with the riddles, a very popular poetic genre in Greek and Byzantine literature, starting with the most famous “neck-riddle” (Oedipus’ enigma) and the three conundrums attributed to Cleoboulina, the daughter of Cleobulus, one of the seven wise men. It analyses riddles as a figure of speech very close to metaphor, from Tryphon’s treatise On tropes to the later Byzantine treatises by Gregory of Corinth, Cocondrios, and George Choiroboskos. It reviews the collections of Athenaeus (Deipnosophists 10) and Constantine Cephalas (Palatine Anthology 14), and the most significant Byzantine authors of riddles (John Mauropous, John Geometres, Christopher Mitylenaeus, Michael Psellus, Basilius Megalomites, Eustathius or Eumathius Macrembolites, Manuel Moschopoulos, Euthymios Tornikios, Theodorus Aulicalamus, and John Eugenikos). The last part surveys the first printed editions of Greek riddles from Lilio Gregorio Giraldi’ s Libellus in quo aenigmata pleraque antiquorum explicantur to the third volume of the Anecdota Greca published by Jean-François Boissonade, the starting point of the modern story of Greek riddles.

L’une des notions-clefs permettant de pénétrer au sein de l’imaginaire grec de la couleur est celle de poikilia. Elle renvoie à une bigarrure générée par l’alliance de matières, de textures et de couleurs contrastées et prend de multiples formes. L’assemblage de l’or et de la pourpre, pour composer des parures somptueuses, en est une. L’étude se propose d’analyser les contextes dans lesquels ces deux matières colorées particulièrement valorisées par les Grecs se trouvent associées, et la signification que revêt alors cette bigarrure de l’excellence. Pour ce faire, deux dossiers principaux sont examinés. D’une part, le livre XII d’Athénée, consacré au plaisir, permet d’explorer la relation que le couple or-pourpre entretient avec la truphè, le luxe, dans sa dimension sociale et politique. D’autre part, la documentation épigraphique liée aux sanctuaires met en lumière la façon dont il contribue à la glorification des dieux et aux manifestations de l’eusebeia. Poikilia is a fundamental notion for understanding of Greek conceptions of colour. The word refers to a variegated combination of contrasting materials, textures and colours. It may assume various shapes. One of them is the association of purple and gold to craft splendid garments and ornaments. This paper aims at analyzing the contexts in which these two highly prized colours are mixed and matched, and the significance of this symbol of excellence in Greek cities. Two cases are studied. On the one hand, Athenaeus’ 12th Book, devoted to pleasure, sheds light on the link between gold, purple and truphè, luxury, from a social and political point of view. On the other hand, inscriptions issuing from sanctuaries expound its role in the glorification of gods and its importance in expressions of eusebeia. Μια από τις κύριες έννοιας που μας επιτρέπουν να κατανοήσουμε την ελληνική αντίληψη για τα χρώματα είναι αυτή της ποικιλίας. Παραπέμπει σε μια ποικιλοχρωμία που προκύπτει από το συνδυασμό υλικών με αντιθετική υφή, αντιθετικών υλών και χρωμάτων και που λαμβάνει διάφορες μορφές. Μια από αυτές είναι και ο συνδυασμός του χρυσού και της πορφύρας, για τη δημιουργία υπέροχων στολιδιών. Η μελέτη αυτή εξετάζει τα πλαίσια μέσα στα οποία συνδυάζονται αυτές οι δύο χρωματικές ύλες, τις οποίες οι Έλληνες εκτιμούσαν ιδιαίτερα, καθώς και τη σημασία αυτής της ποικιλομορφίας, που αποτελεί ταυτόχρονα σύμβολο υπεροχής. Για το λόγο αυτό εξετάζονται δύο περιπτώσεις. Από τη μια το βιβλίο ΧΙΙ του Αθηναίου, που είναι αφιερωμένο στην ευχαρίστηση, επιτρέπει να εξερευνήσουμε τη σχέση που διατηρεί το ζεύγος χρυσός-πορφύρα με την τρυφή, την πολυτέλεια, στην κοινωνική και πολιτική της διάσταση. Από την άλλη, οι επιγραφές που σχετίζονται με ιερά φωτίζουν τον τρόπο με τον οποίο συμβάλλουν στην εξύμνηση των θεών και στην έκφραση ευσέβειας.

Starting from the archaeological evidence, which demonstrates the close cultural relations between the Lydians and their Greek neighbours well beyond the Archaic age, as well as from the Herodotean Lydikos logos, the essay deals with the Greek shifting perception of the Lydian identity during the centuries. The author takes into account the main literary sources in this respect and focuses especially on Athenaeus as a cover-text, to show the pivotal role of later authors in producing – through a careful process of intentional data selection – an un-historical and entirely negative portrait of the Lydians., Partendo tanto dalla documentazione archeologica, che comprova le strette relazioni culturali intrattenute fra i Lidi e i loro vicini Greci ben oltre la fine dell’età arcaica, quanto dal Lydikos logos di Erodoto, il saggio si propone di indagare nel tempo i principali snodi della rappresentazione dell’identità lidia da parte della tradizione letteraria greca. Si ricostruisce lo stemma codicum di un gruppo di codici recentiores dei Deipnosofisti di Ateneo (versione plenior) di ambito veneziano, risalenti a un antigrafo comune (β), al quale dovette appartenere anche la perduta Druckvorlage della princeps del 1514. L’ampia diffusione dell’opera in area veneta è da connettere quasi certamente con l’operazione aldina, alla quale sembrerebbe aver collaborato anche l’umanista padovano Niccolò Leonico Tomeo. The paper reconstructs the stemma codicum of a group of Venetian 15th-16th century manuscripts of the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus (plenior). To this group belongs the now lost Druckvorlage of the editio princeps (1514). The rather wide diffusion of manuscripts of Athenaeus in Venice and Padua can be related to the preparation of the Aldine print, to which the Paduan humanist Niccolò Leonico Tomeo directly contributed.

Philaletheia as Ethical Expertise of the Politically Committed Historian. The Case of Theopompus The paper focuses on the concept of philaletheia as ethical category belonging to the realm of historiography. In the case of Theopompus, one observes a tendency to merge this concept with the idea of a meticulous and in-depth historical investigation: such a study is regarded as the exclusive preserve of the professional historian who, by virtue of the knowledge and skills acquired in the field, is also fully legitimized in stepping forward as a discussant and a political counsellor. The theme can be traced back to contexts involving a polemic against Plato and other intellectuals, plausibly in spheres of activity closely linked to the practice of political communication; its repercussions thus have both professional and ethical connotations., Il contributo è incentrato sul concetto di philaletheia come categoria etica riferita all’àmbito storiografico. Nel caso di Teopompo si registra la tendenza a far coincidere il concetto con l’idea di una ricerca storica scrupolosa e approfondita, appannaggio dello storico di professione, che, in virtù delle competenze maturate con l’esperienza sul campo, è anche pienamente legittimato a proporsi come interlocutore e consigliere politico. Il motivo pare risalire in àmbiti di polemica contro Platone e altri intellettuali, plausibilmente in àmbiti strettamente connessi con la pratica della comunicazione politica, e si riveste di valenze sia professionali sia etiche., La philaletheia comme « expertise » éthique de l’historien engagé politiquement. Središnja tema ovoga rada jest grčki pjesnik Arhestrat iz Gele (4. st. pr. Kr.) i njegova gastronomska pjesma u heksametrima, koja nam je ostala fragmentarno sačuvana u Atenejevom djelu Gozba sofista. S namjerom da se približi književni kontekst u kojem je pjesma nastala, u radu se daje kratak pregled motiva hrane u grčkoj književnosti u razdoblju do Arhestratovog vremena te se navode dodirne točke s nekim drugim vrstama književnosti, primjerice epskom parodijom i didaktičnom poezijom. Središnji dio rada sačinjava osvrt na sadržaj očuvanih fragmenata. Arhestrat u svojim stihovima pojedinu vrstu hrane uglavnom obrađuje na sličan način: govori gdje i u koje doba godine je najbolje nabaviti određenu namirnicu, ističe njezina posebna svojstva te daje upute za pripravu. Ovaj karakterističan obrazac kao i još neki motivi koji se provlače kroz pjesmu ilustrirani su na primjeru nekoliko fragmenata, koji se donose na jeziku izvornika i u proznom prijevodu. U završnom dijelu rada nalazi se sažet prikaz recepcije Arhestratove pjesme u antici: dok su neki bili zgroženi njezinom prizemnom temom i promicanjem bestidnog uživanja u površnim užicima, drugi su je s oduševljenjem hvalili, a imamo i svjedočanstva o tome da se često citirala na gozbama., The main subject of the paper is the fourth-century B.C. Greek poet Archestratus of Gela and his gastronomic poem, written in hexameters, which has been fragmentarily preserved in Athenaeus' work Deipnosophistae. In order to acquaint the reader with the literary context in which the poem emerged, a brief overview is given of the topic of food in Greek literature in the period up to Archestratus' time, as well as a presentation of characteristics his poem has in common with some other forms of literature such as epic parody and didactic poetry. The central part of the paper focuses on the content of the preserved fragments. Archestratus' approach to each type of food generally follows a similar pattern: he mentions the best place and season to buy a certain ingredient, points out its special traits and gives precepts for its preparation. This characteristic formula as well as some other motives frequently appearing in the poem are illustrated in the paper by quoting from several fragments, both in the original Greek and prose translation into Croatian language. In the closing section of the paper there is a brief presentation of the reception of Archestratus' poem in antiquity: while some were appalled by its base topic and its promotion of shameless indulgence in superficial pleasures, others received it with enthusiasm and praise, and we have contemporary testimonies of its being cited at dinner-parties.

It is usual to refer to the first fragment of the Euripides’ Autolykos to define the diets of Greek athletes. But the nature of the text, a satyric drama, and the absence of information on the context of the tirade, should be a first element of reflection on what is generally considered as a reference text. Moreover, the conditions of transmission of the fragment, which has only come to us through indirect sources and is inserted into a set of references which betrays the intention of the citator, are hardly taken into account. We therefore propose to reconsider this fragment of the Autolykos in the light of a critical analysis of indirect sources, in particular Athenaeus, but also Galen, who has been neglected as compared to the first one. The confrontation of both reveals that the authors do not interpret in the same way this fragment, according to their project. The testimony value of the fragment will gain in nuance., Il est d’usage de faire référence au premier fragment de l’Autolykos d’Euripide pour définir les pratiques alimentaires des athlètes grecs. Or la nature du texte, un drame satyrique, et l’absence de renseignements sur le contexte de la tirade, devraient être un premier élément de réflexion sur ce qui est généralement posé comme un texte témoin. Plus encore, il n’est guère tenu compte des conditions de transmission du fragment, qui ne nous est parvenu qu’au travers de sources indirectes, et inséré dans un jeu de références qui trahit l’intention du citateur. Nous nous proposons donc de reconsidérer ce fragment de l’Autolykos à la lumière d’une analyse critique des sources indirectes, notamment Athénée, mais aussi Galien, qui se voit négligé par rapport au premier. La confrontation de l’un et de l’autre révélera qu’à ce fragment, les auteurs ne font pas dire la même chose, et qu’ils sont susceptibles de l’infléchir au gré de leur projet. La valeur de témoignage du fragment y gagnera en nuance.

Proposes a new reconstruction of the text of Eubulus fr. 123 = Athenaeus 1.23b.

This article discusses a passage in Athenaeus (14.620d) that refers to the performance of Herodotus’ work in a theatre in Hellenistic Alexandria. In his edition of Athenaeus, highly valued and still influential, August Meineke replaces Herodotus’ name (unanimously transmitted in Athenaeus’ manuscripts) with Hesiod’s. In this article I set out to overturn a widespread tendency to accept Meineke’s emendation of Athenaeus 14.620d, reconsidering the possibility that Athenaeus did in fact name Herodotus in the light of (a) the difficulty of explaining the origin of the alleged mistake in Athenaeus’ manuscript tradition and (b) the ancients’ tendency to draw parallels between Herodotus’ style and language and Homeric poetry. The fact that Athenaeus refers to theatrical performances of both Herodotus’ work and the Homeric poems will be shown to be very much in line with the ancient rhetorical, historiographical and biographical tradition which regarded Herodotus as the most Homeric of all prose writers.

Slavery as a factor of corruption in Hellenistic culture historiography: hybris, tryphé and stoic morality The aim of this article is to study the ideological and discursive motivations of those classical authors who point out the existence of a historical gap between a period when slavery did not exist, or had little significance, and another time where slavery was widespread. The interest of Diodorus Siculus, Appian, Plutarch, and Athenaeus in the subject coincides with the use of a series of moral concepts, such as hybris and tryphe, which were also closely connected to Stoicism. Aristophanes von Byzanz zog für seine Epitome neben der Historia Animalium noch weitere Quellen heran, die heute verloren sind, etwa die zoologischen Werke des Theophrastos. Seine anatomischen Kenntnisse bezog Aristophanes nicht aus den Anatomai des Aristoteles, sondern aus einem moderneren Werk. Die Epitome ist keinesfalls identisch mit den bei Athenaios dem Aristoteles zugeschriebenen Zoika. Die Tatsache, dass Aristophanes die aristotelischen Tierschriften vor ihrer Edition durch Andronikos von Rhodos benutzte, macht sein Werk für die Textgeschichte der Historia Animalium interessant. Aristophanes of Byzantium consulted for his Epitome in addition to the Historia Animalium, also other sources which are now lost, such as the zoological works of Theophrastus. Aristophanes drew his knowledge of anatomy not from Aristotle’s Anatomai, but from a more recent work. The Epitome is not identical to the Zoika attributed to Aristotle by Athenaeus. The fact, that Aristophanes of Byzantium used Aristotle’s writings on animals before their edition by Andronicus of Rhodes makes his work important for the textual history of the Historia Animalium.

L’archétype dont dérivent les manuscrits conservés de l’épitomé d’Athénée semble avoir été rédigé vers le xie siècle à partir du Marcianus graec. 447, à une époque où ce dernier n’était pas encore dans son état actuel de mutilation, survenue vraisemblablement à Byzance entre le xie et le début du xve siècle. L’épitomé permet donc de compléter en partie les pages manquantes de la version complète du banquet. Mais la conservation du Marcianus nous offre également une possibilité unique d’étudier l’épitomé comparativement à son modèle authentique. La question est de comprendre le sens de cette entreprise consistant à réduire une œuvre qui reposait déjà sur un travail de sélection et de compilation des textes. Cet article met en lumière un certain nombre de partis pris qui ont guidé les choix de l’abréviateur. Les coupes les plus visibles concernent le déroulement du banquet et les changements de personnages, si bien que la narration, qui n’occupait qu’une place mineure dans le texte initial, tend à disparaître purement et simplement. De même, les considérations métatextuelles du narrateur sont éliminées, y compris lorsqu’elles donnaient des informations sur la microstructure du texte, notamment sur le choix du recours à l’ordre alphabétique. L’abréviateur s’intéresse davantage aux citations elles-mêmes, dont il ne reporte toutefois qu’une partie des références (le titre de l’œuvre est souvent omis). Les citations retenues forment généralement un tout syntaxique, d’où le rejet de fragments ne comportant que des groupes infinitifs ou participiaux. On observe en définitive une certaine cohérence et une certaine régularité dans les mécanismes qui ont permis la rédaction de l’épitomé. The archetype of Athenaeus’ epitome seems to have been written about the eleventh century from Marcianus graec. 447, at a time when the latter was not yet in its current state of mutilation, probably occurred in Byzantium between the eleventh and the early fifteenth century. The epitome may therefore partially complete the missing pages of the full version of the banquet. But the conservation of Marcianus also offers us a unique opportunity to study the epitome compared to the authentic model. The question is to understand the meaning of the initiative of reducing a work that was already based on the selection and compilation of texts. This article highlights a number of choices that guided the decisions of the epitomator. The most visible cuts concern the course of the banquet and changing characters, so that the narration, which occupied only a minor role in the initial text, tends to disappear altogether. Similarly, the narrator's metatextual considerations are eliminated, even when they gave information about the microstructure of the text, for example choice of using alphabetical order. The epitomator is more concerned with the quotations, even if he only reports an incomplete part of the references (the titles are often omitted). The retained quotations usually make up a syntactic whole, which explains the rejection of fragments containing only infinitives or participles. Finally we observe a certain coherence and regularity in the mechanisms that led to the writing of the epitome.

It forms an introduction to the Digital Humanities in their various dimensions, offering elements of history, an overview of theories, an illustration of practices. This programme is combined with an account of my own experience in conceiving the project of a digital edition of the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus, which allows me to reflect on the differences between the Anglo-American and European (hence French) cultural contexts. I comment on the name of the Digital Humanities - "humanités numériques", being a transposition of the English expression, is also an oxymoron condensing the tension between the "two cultures", as well as a tactical term loaded with intellectual and social interests -, the question of their definition, institutionnalisation and evolution, the problems encountered by the historiography and the epistemology of this movement, the internal debates of the Digital Humanities communities (like the conflict of theory- and practice-oriented conceptions), the transformations of classical philology, the innovations brought about by big data and new modes of visualisation, and what is at stake in the topic of Digital Humanities education and training. This paper also hints at a fundamental reflection on the materiality and technicality of scholarly practices. It eventually highlights that we need a shared awareness of the already long history of this field and that it is of paramount importance to engage in methodological critique and be open to other disciplines and to collaboration. Ce programme se double d'un témoignage personnel relatif au projet d'édition numérique des Deipnosophistes d'Athénée, ce qui me permet d'esquisser une réflexion sur la différence entre les contextes culturels anglo-américains et ceux des autres pays d'Europe, dont la France. J'y commente le nom des "humanités numériques" - ce calque de l'anglais est un oxymore résumant la tension des "deux cultures", lettrée et scientifique, en même temps qu'une dénomination tactique au service d'intérêts intellectuels et sociaux -, la question de leur définition, de leur institutionnalisation et de leur évolution, les problèmes que rencontrent l'historiographie et l'épistémologie de ce mouvement, les débats internes aux communautés des Digital Humanities (entre des pôles théorique et pratique, notamment), les transformations de la philologie classique, les innovations apportées par les big data et par de nouveaux modes de visualisation, ainsi que l'enjeu que représente la formation aux humanités numériques. Cet article se donne en outre pour horizon une réflexion sur la matérialité et la technicité des pratiques savantes. Il conclut à la pertinence d'une conscience partagée de l'histoire déjà longue de ce champ et à l'importance de la critique méthodologique, de l'ouverture à d'autres disciplines et de la collaboration. Ricostruzione della biografia, della metodologia teorica e pratica e dell'opera di Eforo di Cuma, in particolare delle perdute Storie (primo esempio di storia universale, secondo Polyb. V 33), sulla base dei frammenti editi da Jacoby (FGrHist 70) e di ulteriori frammenti non catalogati.

La tenda per banchetti fatta erigere da Tolomeo II nei palazzi di Alessandria è descritta da Ateneo di Naucrati (in un passo qui nuovamente tradotto), operante alla fine del II d.C., che si basa sul racconto di Callissino di Rodi, vissuto probabilmente negli ultimi decenni del III a.C.; questi a sua volta si sarebbe basato sui documenti dell’archivio regale, consistenti sia in atti scritti sia, si ipotizza qui, in materiali figurativi. L’apparato, eretto verosimilmente in occasione dei primi Ptolemaia nel 279-278 a.C., era destinato a un numero limitato di convitati: i dignitari di corte, ma soprattutto gli ambasciatori provenienti da tutta l’oikoumene e probabilmente i settanta traduttori ebrei del Pentateuco, in un’ambizione di enciclopedismo culturale e di universalità politica. La lettura del significato della tenda si integra con quello della processione, volta invece alla popolazione greca di Alessandria e della chora, e porta a collocare ipoteticamente lo stadio, dove essa aveva luogo, non troppo distante dai palazzi. La tenda, forse collegabile a Sostrato di Cnido progettista del Faro e inventore dei portici a due piani, costituisce l’approdo ideologico delle tende persiane e di quella di Alessandro a Susa; tuttavia la valutazione degli apadana e delle sale ipostile greche prova l’indipendenza tipologica e funzionale della tenda tolemaica da tali edifici, spesso invocati come modelli., LANX. La élite de pepaideumenoi del Imperio romano, tanto de lengua griega como latina, viven sumergidos en un mundo libresco: el libro, como objeto material y como concepto intelectual, ha pasado a formar parte de su vida más cotidiana. Este trabajo pretende mostrar cómo esta realidad universal adquiere, sin embargo, rasgos bien particulares según los individuos, con lo cual se conforma un panorama sociológico y cultural que, a través del libro, define bien a las mencionadas élites. Roman Empire élites of pepaideumenoi, both Greek and Latin writers, live immersed in a bookish world: books, as material objects or as intellectual concept, have become an important issue of the daily life. The aim of this paper is to show how this universal statement turns out into particular features depending on the individuals, and to outline a sociological and cultural panorama which, through books and libraries, characterizes the mentioned elites.

The main sources available to us for the study of ancient Greek riddles are a section from Athenaeus' "Deipnosophists" (Book 10, 448b-459c, 2nd-3rd c. CE) and the items collected in the "Greek Anthology" (Book 14). In an interestingly large number of cases, the solutions to these riddles are proper nouns. This article lists the relevant texts and provides a typology of the uses of the proper noun evidenced therein, with respect especially to the problem of the meaning of the noun.; L'étude des énigmes grecques de l'Antiquité se fonde principalement sur une section des "Deipnosophistes" d'Athénée (X, 448 b-459 c, IIe-IIIe s. de notre ère) et sur les énoncés recueillis dans l'"Anthologie grecque" (livre XIV). Dans un nombre de cas remarquable, ces énigmes ont pour solution des noms propres. Le présent article établit ce corpus et propose une typologie des usages du nom propre qui y sont faits, en prêtant une attention particulière au problème de la signification du nom.

Cette étude des citations d’Éphore dans les Deipnosophistes s’articule en trois parties : (I) modalités de citation d’ Athénée, (II) choix de citation d’ Athénée, (III) valeur d’Athénée en tant que témoin sur Éphore. L’usage d’Éphore apparaît ponctuel: il ne vise qu’à approfondir tel ou tel thème. Tantôt transparaît la conscience d’aspects de l’œuvre d’Éphore que d’autres témoins présentent comme caractéristiques, tantôt, dans des cas isolés, on reconnaît la qualité des informations de l’historien. Du fait de sa sensibilité érudite, Athénée finit par nous conserver des données de première importance pour la connaissance de multiples aspects de l’œuvre d’Éphore, en particulier sur le contenu des différents livres, sur le récit d’histoire moderne et contemporaine à l’intérieur des Histoires et sur les ingrédients culturels qui alimentèrent la réflexion d’Éphore en matière de méthodologie historiographique.

International audience; By studying how Athenaeus considers stylistic phenomena, this paper deals with a paradoxical topic: the style of this compiler. First of all, I explain to what extent the structure of the works allows for critical judgments to be expressed, either by the author or by his characters and fictional surrogates. This implies examining the links which are created between the quotations and their narrative frame. I then analyse the uses of the "names of style" (harmonía, hermēneía, plásma, túpos, phrásis, kharaktḗr and especially skhē̂ma, trópos and léxis). Their technical uses are rather far and few between; they sometimes are the sign that secondary sources are being drawn upon. They mostly appear in the introductory syntagms before the quotations, according to patterns I discuss in detail. Comparing Athenaeus' "style" with that of the medieval "abbreviator" of the Deipnosophists, who brought the work back to an elementary form of compilation, I suggest that it is important to take into account both enunciative levels if we want adequately to tackle this problem. I therefore study the explicit comments and the symbolic value of the quotations, i.e. the effect they have in the framing dialogues, as well as what they reveal about the relationship of the author with his material and with his reader. Pleasure, rarity and difficulty are the major topics of this metadiscourse. Quoting practices thus take on a stylistic dimension in Athenaeus' literary experiment.; En étudiant le regard qu'Athénée porte sur les faits stylistiques, cet article traite de la question paradoxale du style de ce compilateur. J'indique tout d'abord dans quelle mesure la structure de l'œuvre permet l'expression d'un jugement sur les énoncés qui y sont rapportés, soit de la part de l'auteur, soit de la part de ses personnages et porte-parole. Cela revient à examiner la question des liens qu'il tisse entre les citations et leur cadre fictionnel. J'analyse ensuite les occurrences des "noms du style" (harmonía, hermēneía, plásma, túpos, phrásis, kharaktḗr et, surtout, skhē̂ma, trópos et léxis). Leurs emplois techniques, assez peu nombreux, sont parfois la trace des sources secondaires exploitées. Ils figurent principalement dans les syntagmes qui introduisent les extraits, selon des procédures que je détaille. En comparant alors le "style" d'Athénée et celui de l'abréviateur médiéval des Deipnosophistes, qui a ramené l'ouvrage à une forme élémentaire de compilation savante, je suggère qu'il importe de tenir compte de deux plans d'énonciation pour poser adéquatement le problème du style : j'observe à la fois les commentaires explicites et la valeur symbolique des citations, c'est-à-dire l'effet qu'elles produisent au sein des dialogues, mais également ce qu'elles révèlent du rapport que l'auteur entretient avec son matériau et avec son lecteur. Plaisir, rareté et difficulté sont les thèmes majeurs de ce métadiscours. La pratique de la citation revêt ainsi une dimension stylistique dans l'expérience littéraire qu'est aussi le texte d'Athénée.
