Abstract The performance of carbon mineral-combined adsorbents in a batch and fixed column study was examined for removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), which typically found in landfill leachate. The batch experiment was carried out using various factors including adsorbent dosages and retention time, while column performance was evaluated by optimizing the influent flow rate. The surface of the composite adsorbent was examined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine any changes before and after column operations. The XRF analysis of the composite adsorbent reveals a high concentration of calcium oxide and silica oxide as the primary compounds. The main functional groups in the composite adsorbent included O–H, N–H, O–C, C–N, C–O, and Si–O–Si. The SEM analysis revealed that the composite adsorbent contains heterogeneous pores and a rough surface. The reduction rates achieved were 86% for COD, with an optimum adsorption capacity of 31.3 mgg−1, and 80% for NH3-N, with an optimum adsorption capacity of 29.8 mgg−1. The breakthrough capacities for COD and NH3-N adsorption were 6.55 and 4.24 mgg−1, respectively. However, optimal empty-bed contact times (EBCTs) in minutes were 480. The performance efficiency of the column for COD and NH3-N was 0.9978% and 0.9913%, by utilizing fresh composite adsorbent, and these number figures increased to (≥ 0.9998%) respectively after the regeneration process. The Adams–Bohart constant for COD from 5.30 × 10–6 to 4.92 × 10–6 mL/min-mg and NH3-N from 2.90 × 10–5 to 4.52 × 10–5 mL/min-mg respectively was found to increase with increasing flow rates from 1.5 to 3.0 mLmin−1. Therefore, COD and NH3-N adsorption on composite adsorbent at flow rates of 1.5 mLmin−1 was considered appropriate from the context of this study. In summary, this research has successfully shown that the use of composites as an adsorbent is a viable and suitable for the removal of COD and NH3-N from leachate, indicating their potential for use in real-world industrial wastewater treatment could further enhance their practical applications.

Rhizobium besides its nodule formation characteristic with members of Fabaceae family has been recognized for its great root colonizing ability and growth hormone production potential. In addition to nitrogen fixation in legume plants, rhizobia considered as beneficial tools and act as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with many non-legumes. Present study was elucidated to determine the comparative role of Rhizbium sp for growth promotion of sunflower. Rhizobia were isolated from five different legumes (mungbean, barseem, lentil, chickpea, and vegetable pea) and checked for their auxin production efficiency. Rhizobial isolates Cp-4 showed maximum auxin potential (5.37 μg mL-1IAA equivalents).Results showed that inoculation of all rhizobial isolates caused significant increase in growth and physiological parameters of sunflower plants. While prominent results were found with inoculation of mungbean rhizobial isolate Mb-2 which increases the chlorophyll a, N, P, fresh and dry matter of sunflower significantly by 8.34, 4.9, 36, 31, and 34%, respectively in comparison to uninoculated control plants. Hence, present study concluded that Rhizobium sp can be successfully used as PGPR in non-legumes after thorough investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of immunoassays in drug screening as required in emergency for the rapid diagnosis of drug intoxication in travel related crimes. Study Design: Diagnostic accuracy study. Place and Duration of Study: department of Chemical Pathology and Endocrinology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Jul 2017 to Jun 2018. Methodology: Sealed urine specimens of 77 patients with history of suspected intoxication in drugs facilitated street crimes, received for toxicology screening were included in the study. All the specimens were analysed, initially on immunoassay (index test) and then on Triple Quadrupole Liquid chromatography–Mass spectrometry (reference standard). Benzodiazepine being the main class of drugs involved in travel related crimes, diagnostic accuracy of immunoassay technique was assessed for these by calculating its sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value. Results: Victims were predominantly males and public transportation was the most common mode of transport. The most commonly used drug was Lorazepam. Immunoassay failed to detect few cases who were shown to be intoxicated with benzodiazepines by liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The false negative rate was 4.9%. Only one false positive case was observed. The accuracy was calculated to be 94.8% with sensitivity of 95.08% and specificity of 93.7%. Conclusion: Immunoassay was found reliable for rapid testing in drug facilitated intoxication cases. However critical decision making should be done cautiously keeping in mind the limitations associated with these screening procedures.

Objective: To introduce a relatively convenient and effective way of conducting Insulin Tolerance Test for diagnosis of Growth Hormone deficiency in children with short stature. Study Design: Cross sectional analytical study. Place and Duration of Study: Conducted at Department of Chemical Pathology and Endocrinology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, from May 2017 to Jul 2018. Methodology: A total of 185 cases were included. Sample selection was done by non-probability consecutive sampling technique. Insulin tolerance test was performed by taking basal sample for serum growth hormone and plasma glucose levels before giving intravenous insulin bolus according to dose of 0.15 IU/kg. Samples for Growth Hormone level were repeated at time of induced hypoglycemia (defined as plasma glucose level of 20 mIU/l) at induction alone, followed by 30 minutes post induction; reflecting the significance of these two samples in diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency. Agriculture is the economic backbone of Pakistan. 67% of country’s population resides in rural areas and primarily depends on agriculture. Pakistan's soils are poor in OM and have a low C : N ratio, and the overall fertility status is insufficient to support increased crop yields. Compost is an excellent alternative solution for improving soil OM content. However, this excellent alternative supply in Pakistan has yet to be used. Mass volumes of leaves, grass clippings, plant stalks, vines, weeds, twigs, and branches are burned daily. In this study, different compost piles (P1, P2, and P3) of compost were made using different agricultural and animal waste combinations to assess temperature, pH, and NPK. Results revealed that P3 demonstrated the most successful composting procedure. The temperature and pH levels throughout the composting process were determined in a specified range of 42–45oC and 6.1–8.3, respectively. Total nitrogen content ranged from 81.5 to 2175 ppm in farm compost. Total phosphorus concentrations range from 1.33 to 13.98 ppm, and potassium levels, on the other hand, range from 91.53 to 640 ppm in farm compost. The overall nitrogen concentration grew progressively between each pile at the end of a week. The varied concentrations revealed that adding various forms of agricultural waste would result in a variation in the quantity of NPK owing to microbial activity. On-farm composting has emerged as an effective technique for the sustainability of agricultural activities, capable of resolving crucial problems like crop residues and livestock waste disposal. Based on this study’s results, the pile (P3) combination shows the best NPK value performance and is recommended for agricultural uses to overcome the OM deficiency.

Rural electrification is a fundamental step towards achieving universal access to electricity by 2030. On-grid rural electrification remains a costly proposition, therefore the need to consider off-grid renewable energy solutions is inevitable. However, the critical issue pertaining to local power generation through renewable energy is the absence of area-specific production capacity and economic viability data for the different renewable energy technologies. This paper addresses this issue for Pakistan’s Balochistan province by assessing the area’s potential and economic feasibility of using solar PV for rural electrification. The results suggest that the Balochistan province has the best solar irradiance value in the world. Furthermore, optimal tilt angles calculated for respective regions can significantly increase solar energy yield. The economic feasibility study, carried out for solar PV systems, reveals that the electricity generated using solar PV costs Rs. 7.98 per kWh and is considerably cheaper than conventional electricity, which costs approximately Rs. 20.79 per kWh. Similarly, solar PV systems could mitigate 126,000 metric tons of CO2 annually if 100% of the unelectrified households adopted solar PV systems. Based on these research findings, this paper proposes a policy that would serve as a guideline for the government to extend solar PV-based off-grid rural electrification projects in Balochistan as well as on a national scale.

Agaricus bisporus and Agaricus bitorquis are among most favorite mushrooms of the world. Mineral contents, proximate composition and fatty acid profile of these mushrooms were determined for evaluation of their dietary value. Na, K and Li contents were high, while Cr, Cu, Pb, Co, Zn, Mn and Ni concentrations were low in both Agaricus bisporus and Agaricus bitorquis. Proximate analysis showed that both mushrooms have sufficient quantity of protein, lipids, carbohydrates and cellulose. Gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acid methyl esters revealed that linoleic acid (44.19 %) and oleic acid (40.13 %) were the dominant fatty acids in Agaricus bisporus and Agaricus bitorquis respectively

Sulforaphane (SFN) is an isothiocyanate with multiple biomedical applications. Sulforaphane can be extracted from the plants of the genus Brassica . However, broccoli sprouts are the chief source of sulforaphane and are 20 to 50 times richer than mature broccoli as they contain 1,153 mg/100 g. SFN is a secondary metabolite that is produced as a result of the hydrolysis of glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate) by the enzyme myrosinase. This review paper aims to summarize and understand the mechanisms behind the anticancer potential of sulforaphane. The data was collected by searching PubMed/MedLine, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. This paper concludes that sulforaphane provides cancer protection through the alteration of various epigenetic and non-epigenetic pathways. It is a potent anticancer phytochemical that is safe to consume with minimal side effects. FTO is the strongest known genetic susceptibility locus for obesity. Experimental studies in animals suggest the potential roles of FTO in regulating food intake. The interactive relation among FTO variants, dietary intake and body mass index (BMI) is complex and results from previous often small-scale studies in humans are highly inconsistent. We performed large-scale analyses based on data from 177,330 adults (154 439 Whites, 5776 African Americans and 17 115 Asians) from 40 studies to examine: (i) the association between the FTO-rs9939609 variant (or a proxy single-nucleotide polymorphism) and total energy and macronutrient intake and (ii) the interaction between the FTO variant and dietary intake on BMI. The minor allele (A-allele) of the FTO-rs9939609 variant was associated with higher BMI in Whites (effect per allele = 0.34 [0.31, 0.37] kg/m(2), P = 1.9 × 10(-105)), and all participants (0.30 [0.30, 0.35] kg/m(2), P = 3.6 × 10(-107)). The BMI-increasing allele of the FTO variant showed a significant association with higher dietary protein intake (effect per allele = 0.08 [0.06, 0.10] %, P = 2.4 × 10(-16)), and relative weak associations with lower total energy intake (-6.4 [-10.1, -2.6] kcal/day, P = 0.001) and lower dietary carbohydrate intake (-0.07 [-0.11, -0.02] %, P = 0.004). The associations with protein (P = 7.5 × 10(-9)) and total energy (P = 0.002) were attenuated but remained significant after adjustment for BMI. We did not find significant interactions between the FTO variant and dietary intake of total energy, protein, carbohydrate or fat on BMI. Our findings suggest a positive association between the BMI-increasing allele of FTO variant and higher dietary protein intake and offer insight into potential link between FTO, dietary protein intake and adiposity., (© The Author 2014.
