WOS: 000311653300001 In this study, the evaluation of therapeutic effects of probiotic bacteria, in comparison with single supportive and symptomatic therapy. in CPV (canine parvovirus) infection was aimed. A total of 20 naturally infected dogs, 1-6 months old, exhibiting enteritis and for which the diagnosis were confirmed by an ELISA commercially available test, were randomly divided into two equal groups. Only supportive and symptomatic therapy was applied in group I, whereas a commercial probiotic product which contained different probiotic bacteria (VSL#3) was used as adjuvant oral therapy in the group II. Clinical scores established from complete clinical examinations performed at the beginning and on every subsequent day during the therapy and haematological parameters determined before and 5 days after treatments were compared between the 2 groups. A moderate anaemia (low haemoglobinemia) coupled to reduction in the mean corpuscular volume and haemoglobin concentration was evidenced in 55% of parvovirus infected clogs and a relatively leukopenia when compared with after the treatment was observed in all diseased animals. Seven (70%) and nine (90%) dogs in the groups I and II respectively, survived during the trial. Moreover, the clinical scores have declined significantly more rapidly in the group II than in the group I. While the erythrocyte parameters have not significantly differed between the 2 groups, leukocyte and lymphocyte numerations were significantly improved during the treatment course only in clogs additionally treated with probiotics. The present study indicates that probiotics may be beneficial in CPV therapy. especially for shortening the recovery time, under optimal care conditions. WOS: 000287897300001 In this study, the effects of florfenicol and tulathromycin on clinical recovery and acute-phase proteins in bovine respiratory diseases (BRD) were evaluated under the field conditions. A total of 30 local race feedlot cattle were used in the study. Twenty naturally infected beef and 10 healthy beef were used for the experimental and control groups, respectively. Sick animals were randomly divided into two groups of 10 and subcutaneously 40 mg per kg florfenicol was administrated in group I and 2.5 mg per kg tulathromycin was administrated in group II as single dose. The animals were clinically examined before (0 h) and 9 days after the treatment. Also, blood samples were taken and serum haptoglobin and serum amyloid A concentrations were measured before and 9 days after the treatment. It was concluded that although the clinical findings and recovery were not always correlated with serum acute phase proteins levels, florfenicol and tulathromycin can be effective for BRD therapy under field conditions.

Probiotics were orally administered by orogastric gavage on a daily basis for 7 days after induction of IBD, and then rats were euthanased and tissue samples were obtained for macroscopical and histopathological investigations. At the end of the study, it was concluded that therapeutic efficiency of nix probiotic product, which contained different commercial probiotic bacterial strains, was determined in IBD, and therapeutic efficiency of I was also found to be notable in IBD. However, therapeutic activity of Lactobacillus ocidophilus alone was not satisfactory for BD therapy.

WOS: 000251630900008 Trichophytosis is an enzootic skin disease caused by Trichophyton spp. In this study, the beneficial effects of 2 intramuscular injections (10 mL of attenuated T. verrucosum strain (2.5 10(6) agents/mL) at 2 weeks of interval on 9 dermatophytosis affected cows were investigated by evaluation of clinical recovery and measurement of biochemical markers of liver and kidney functions (enzyme AST, ALT and ALP activities and serum BUN, uric acid and creatinine concentrations, respectively) in blood serum collected on days 0 and 14 (before and 6 hours after the intramuscular injection) and on Day 42. Firstly, the presence of virulent T. verrucosum strain in skin lesions of all affected animals was confirmed by isolation and microbiological identification. Total or partial clinical recovery (diminution of the number and size of the skin lesions, reduction of the infected body areas, and disappearance of scurf, scales, hair loss, and keratinisation zones) was observed 4 weeks after the second injection in 66.6% (6/9) and in 33% (3/9) of affected cows respectively. Animals in which clinical recovery was incomplete were the most severely infected before the beginning of treatment. Furthermore, no significant alteration of liver and kidney functions was induced by administration of the attenuated T. verrucosum strain. Consequently, because of the significant reduction of the clinical signs and the absence of side effect, vaccination with attenuated strain of T. verrucosum may be beneficial in the treatment of bovine trichophytosis.

Guvenc, Tolga/0000-0003-1468-3415 WOS: 000254907600039 Clinical signs and necropsy findings were described in a four-year-old female rhesus macaque with diabetes mellitus, resulting from spontaneous amyloidosis. Weakness, polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria, which lasted for a few weeks, were determined from anamnesis and clinical investigations. Highly increased serum BUN, AST, ALP levels, glycosuria, and proteinuria was detected in the biochemical analysis. According to these clinical, haematological, and biochemical data, it was thought that the monkey was affected with diabetes mellitus. Despite all efforts to cure the animal, the patient died. Diffuse amyloidosis was detected in the kidney and pancreas at the necropsy and histopathological examinations.

meral, yucel/0000-0001-9099-5061 WOS: 000241012600006 PubMed: 17009812 July 2004, a cow with clinical signs of ovine herpesvirus type-2 infection which is known as sheep associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF) was reported in Samsun Province in Turkey. Blood samples were collected from the suspected cow, 10 sheep housed with it, and from 150 healthy sheep and 29 healthy cattle randomly selected from different places in Samsun Province. Nested polymerase chain reaction (n-PCR) was used to detect ovine herpesvirus type-2 (OvHV-2) DNA in the suspected cow and competitive-ELISA (c-ELISA) kits were used to detect antibodies against OvHV-2. The suspected cow was found to be n-PCR positive and c-ELISA negative. The serological results were as follows: All 10 (100 %) of sheep housed with the suspected cow and 18 of 29 (62 %) of the randomly selected cattle were found seropositive. All 150 randomly selected healthy sheep were seronegative. The overall percentage of seropositivity was 14.7% (28/190). OvHV-2 DNA was detected in the peripheral blood leucocyte (PBL) samples of the cow and of the 10 sheep housed with the suspected cow.

Totally 24 rabbits were used in the study. Sixteen rabbits, naturally infested with P. cuniculi were randomly divided into two equal experimental groups and cypermethrin was pour-on administered 5 mg/kg (Group I) and 10 mg/kg (Group II) as a single dose. Also, 8 healthy animals (non-infested with P. cuniculi) exposed only saline were used for the control group. Psoroptic mange was diagnosed and monitored in the experimental groups by otoscopic and microscopic evaluations on Day 0 (pretreatment) and Days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 after the treatment. Clinical findings about psoroptic mange were scored, blood cypermethrin concentrations and haematological parameters were determined on the evaluation days. Six rabbits from Group I had P. cuniculi and a statistically important difference was determined between number of infested rabbits of Group I and Group II on Day 21 (p

- Abstract
Case History: A 6-year-old, neutered, female Angora cat presented with a history of lethargy and anorexia for 2 months and a clinically palpable and gradually enlarging, solid mass in the abdominal cavity extending from the last costal arch to the pelvic cavity., Clinical Findings: Examination of the cat revealed jaundice, dehydration and hypothermia. Haematological manifestations included lymphopenia and substantial decrease in haematocrit value. Biochemical analysis of the blood revealed hypoglycaemia, three-fold elevated blood urea nitrogen values, increased level of serum aspartate aminotransferase and increased total bilirubin while the creatinine level was normal. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen showed a disrupted and large hypoechoic area around the left kidney. The cat was anaesthetised and the left kidney was removed, but the cat died following surgery., Pathological Findings: On post-mortem examination, the left kidney was markedly enlarged and both the cortical and medullary parenchyma were replaced by confluent, multilobulated, pale tan-white, firm nodular masses protruding above the capsular surface. Metastasis was not observed. Cytological examination revealed a population of spindle-shaped cells of variable size, with abundant coarse chromatin and occasionally prominent nucleoli. Initial sections of the kidney were indicative of undifferentiated sarcoma confirmed by immunohistochemistry revealing vimentin-positive and cytokeratin-negative results in all tumour tissues. Additional sections showed very small amounts of both cytokeratin-positive and vimentin-positive areas., Diagnosis: Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma (SRCC) with scant epithelial components originating from left kidney., Clinical Relevance: Clinical and pathological features were similar to those of human SRCC, even though there was no evidence of metastases. Immunohistochemistry for vimentin and cytokeratin may be useful for definitive diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid differentiation, although staining of sections from several different parts of the tumour may be necessary. When a primary renal tumour is presented, SRCC should be considered as this diagnosis may influence treatment protocols and the clinical outcome.

- Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical features and treatment outcomes of patients with a thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) or fistula., Methods: The records of 49 patients (9 female, 40 male; mean age: 23.16 +/- 1.13 years; range 6 to 56 years) operated on between January 1995 and July 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Patient's age, sex, duration of symptoms, clinical features, pre-operative diagnostic tests, treatment, histopathologic diagnosis, and post-operative complications were noted. All patients underwent the Sistrunk procedure., Results: Fifteen patients (30.6%) were < or = 20 years old, while 3 (6.1%) patients were 40 years old at the time of operation. There was cyst formation in 26 patients (53.1%) and fistula formation in 23 patients (46.9%). The lesions of 41 patients (83.7%) were located in the midline, while the lesions of 8 patients (16.3%) were located in the paramedian neck (5 left side, 3 right side). The most common presenting symptoms were painless mass in the midline of the neck and recurrent suppuration of fistula formation. Neck ultrasonography (USG) was the most common pre-operative diagnostic procedure and was performed on all patients with cyst formations. There were no major complications postoperatively. There was recurrence in only one patient after the Sistrunk procedure. One patient was incidentally diagnosed with thyroid papillary carcinoma after histopathological examination., Conclusions: A TGDC is the most common congenital mass in the neck and is usually located midline. USG is suggested for a clinically suspected TGDC. The Sistrunk procedure is a safe and successful technique with low complication and recurrence rates. Even though carcinomas arising in TGDCs are uncommon, histopathological examination must be routinely performed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out malignancy.
