Abstract

Although catheter ablation (CA) is still the first-line treatment for persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, its limited long-term success rate has motivated clinical interest in preoperative prediction on the procedures outcome to provide optimized patient selection, limit repeated procedures, hospitalization rates, and treatment costs. To this respect, dominant frequency (DF) and amplitude of fibrillatory waves (f-waves) reflected on the ECG have provided promising results. Hence this work explores the ability of a novel set of frequency and amplitud f-waves features, such as spectral entropy (SE), spectral flatness measure (SFM), and amplitud spectrum area (AMSA), along with DF and normalized f-wave amplitude (NFWA), to improve CA outcome prediction. Despite all single indices reported statistically significant differences between patients who relapsed to AF and those who maintained sinus rhythm after a follow up of 9 months for 204 6 s-length ECG intervals extracted from 51 persistent AF patients, they obtained a limited discriminant ability ranging between 55 and 62%, which was overcome by 15 - 23% when NFWA, SE and AMSA were combined. Consequently, this combination of frequency and amplitude features of the fwaves seems to provide new insights about the atrial substrate remodeling, which could be helpful in improving preoperative CA outcome prediction.

10. Attitudes towards Plagiarism in Business Administration Students from Two Private Universities in Arequipa

Abstract

The present study seeks to identify, describe and explain attitudes towards plagiarism of Business Administration students from two private universities in Arequipa. A qualitative methodology was used and the analysis content technique was applied. The data were obtained from information from the application of an individual interview guide and a focus group guide. Twenty individual interviews and two focus groups were conducted, totaling 20 newly-admitted students (10 women and 10 men). The categories arising from the answers expressed by the participants were: (a) knowledge of the issue, (b) permissive attitude towards plagiarism, (c) plagiarism as a social facilitator, (d) consequences and (e) preventive attitude. The results show that, for those interviewed, plagiarism is defined as the act of "copying the work of others", "cheating" or "stealing". They also concluded that plagiarizing is a common and even institutionalized practice that begins at school and is perfected in the University. Getting good grades is the reason why there are no accusations or discrepancy between students who commit plagiarism and those who do not, since they maintain that plagiarism is not a crime. Finally, the ignorance that you are committing plagiarism, the easy way to do something and fear of failing a course are some of the causes of this cheating action. Among the proposals that the interviewees make to solve this problem is that fact that universities disclose and implement their disciplinary regulations.

13. Cyber Language Used by University Syudents: Textual Analysis of Facebook Page 'Confessions'

Abstract

The presentation of the cyber language as one of the variations of the language includes a discussion on its nature as an intermediate form between oral language and written language and the forces responsible for the linguistic changes. On the one hand, we have the popular usage that has given rise to the constant evolution of the language and, on the other hand, the educated speech which strives to recover its etymological form (Betancourt, 2010). The objective of the present study is to analyze the linguistic phenomena present in the texts listed on the Facebook page called "Confessions" of 6 Peruvian universities, 3 from the city of Arequipa and 3 subsidiaries of Lima universities in this city. The corpus consists of 70 texts, the design is transversal, descriptive and documentary and we used as a tool a registration form of linguistic variations in which spelling, lexical-semantic and lexical-syntactic features were collected and analyzed, in addition to the function of the language used in this means. The study demonstrates the existence of a different variety of distinctly creative texts. Regarding the spelling features, we found the vowel elision, substitution and multiplication of consonant graphemes. Lexical-semantic features of the analyzed texts show a marked use of euphemisms, colloquial words and anglicisms. From the lexical-syntactical point of view, the analysis shows that despite the more or less informal nature of the means used (Facebook), the messages that are transmitted are texts which develop comprehensive and complex argumentations. Finally, functions that are prevalent in the texts are the emotional and phatic ones.

14. The Comparative Effects of Teacher versus Peer-Scaffolding on EFL Learners' Incidental Vocabulary Learning and Reading Comprehension: A Socio-Cultural Perspective

Abstract

Drawing on sociocultural theory, and multiple empirical studies conducted on the effectiveness of scaffolding on second or foreign language learning, the authors investigated the application of various forms of scaffolding (i.e., teacher versus peer-scaffolding) on EFL learners' incidental vocabulary learning and reading comprehension performance through a sociocultural perspective. To this end, 60 EFL learners out of one-hundred were selected through the administration of an Oxford Placement Test from three language institutes and divided into 3 groups (two experimental and one control group) each including 20 intermediate EFL learners. The first experimental group received teacher-scaffolding instruction, the second experimental group received peer-scaffolding instruction and the control group received traditional instruction with no scaffolding. The vocabulary and reading comprehension pre-tests were administered to the three groups. At the end of the experiment, the vocabulary and reading comprehension post-tests were administered. The descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and the inferential statistics (a One-way ANOVA) were run to analyze the collected data. The results showed that both experimental groups had better performance than the control group and there was a significant difference between teacher-scaffolding and peer-scaffolding in both vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension performance and the peer-scaffolding group had a better performance than the teacher-scaffolding group. This research provided some implications about different types of scaffolding for language teachers and syllabus designers.

Abstract

The article offers a detailed and updated review on the application of data science tools based on machine learning algorithms in order to predict the short and medium term probability of food crises in territories of countries with high vulnerability to this type of situation. After a brief review of the definition of food security and its metrics, the main international efforts are described to monitor the agroclimatic, economic and sociopolitical factors that most affect the nutritional deterioration of population groups or specific geographic areas, and then generate alerts that trigger humanitarian assistance to prevent the increase in hunger and its effects on the health of those who suffer from it. Based on the review carried out, a prediction model adapted to the context of the Central American countries is proposed, in which structural variables are considered to be used in the annual determination of food vulnerability profiles, as well as others subject to permanent changes and that therefore allow the identification of shocks or disturbances that can impact food security. The proposed model seeks to improve decision-making and prioritization of resources and humanitarian assistance in regions with limited data availability., El artículo ofrece una detallada y actualizada revisión sobre la aplicación de herramientas de ciencia de datos basadas en algoritmos de machine learning con el fin de predecir a corto y medio plazo la probabilidad de ocurrencia de crisis alimentarias en territorios de países con alta vulnerabilidad a este tipo de situaciones. Tras efectuar un breve repaso sobre la definición de seguridad alimentaria y sus métricas, se describen los principales esfuerzos internacionales para monitorear los factores agroclimáticos, económicos y sociopolíticos que más inciden en el deterioro alimentario de grupos de población o zonas geográficas concretas, y tras ello, generar alertas que desencadenen asistencia humanitaria que impidan el aumento del hambre y sus efectos en la salud de quienes la padecen. A partir de la revisión efectuada se propone un modelo de predicción adaptado al contexto los países Centroamericanos, en el que se consideran variables estructurales a ser utilizadas en la determinación anual de perfiles de vulnerabilidad alimentaria, así como otras sometidas a cambios permanentes y que por tanto permiten identificar shocks o perturbaciones que pueden impactar en la seguridad alimentaria. El modelo propuesto busca mejorar la toma de decisiones y la priorización de recursos y atención humanitaria en regiones con limitada disponibilidad de datos., L'article propose une revue détaillée et actualisée de l'application des outils de science des données basés sur des algorithmes d'apprentissage automatique afin de prédire à court et moyen terme la probabilité d'apparition de crises alimentaires sur les territoires des pays à forte vulnérabilité à ce type de crise. situations. Après un bref examen de la définition de la sécurité alimentaire et de ses paramètres, les principaux efforts internationaux visant à surveiller les facteurs agro-climatiques, économiques et sociopolitiques qui influencent le plus la détérioration nutritionnelle de groupes de population ou de zones géographiques spécifiques sont décrits, puis, génèrent des alertes qui déclenchent une aide humanitaire qui évite l’augmentation de la faim et ses effets sur la santé de ceux qui en souffrent. 27. Public health implications of wasting and stunting relationship in children under five years highly vulnerable to undernutrition in Guatemala: The REDAC Study

Abstract

Background: Guatemala is the Latin American country with the highest prevalence of childhood stunting. Short height can bias the diagnosis of wasting when using the weight-for-height indicator. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic concordance of the anthropometric indicators of wasting and the relationship between wasting and stunting in children from highly vulnerable communities in Guatemala. Methods: The sample consisted of 13,031 anthropometric records of children under five years of age (49.5% girls, average age of 27.9 months), including weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), collected in March–August 2019. The proportions of stunting, underweight, and wasting, assessed by three different indicators, as well as their concurrence through the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure were calculated. Results: Stunting affected 73% of the sample, and 74.2% showed anthropometric failure. Wasting varied by indicator (weight-for-height: 2.8%; MUAC: 4.4%; MUAC-for-age: 10.6%). Concordance between MUAC and weight-for-height was very low (Kappa: 0.310; sensitivity: 40.9%). MUAC identified more wasted children in the stunted group (53.6% vs. 26.5%), while the opposite occurred in the non-stunted group (34.8% vs. 46.7%). Abstract

A method to obtain three-dimensional data of real-world objects by integrating their material properties is presented. The material properties are defined by capturing the Reflectance Fields of the real-world objects. It is shown, unlike conventional reconstruction methods, the method is able to use the reflectance information to recover surface depth for objects having a non-Lambertian surface reflectance.
