The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, stands on the riverfront as an emphatic statement of the modern spirit in the context of land and older buildings that surround it. The building is loosely modeled after the form of a fish and has titanium walls. The manner in which the museum will fit into the cultural identity of the Basque population must be resolved. The museum was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in October 1997.
