1. A Novel Lexicon for the Moral Foundation of Liberty

Abstract

The moral value of liberty is a central concept in our inference system when it comes to taking a stance towards controversial social issues such as vaccine hesitancy, climate change, or the right to abortion. Here, we propose a novel Liberty lexicon evaluated on more than 3,000 manually annotated data both in in- and out-of-domain scenarios. As a result of this evaluation, we produce a combined lexicon that constitutes the main outcome of this work. This final lexicon incorporates information from an ensemble of lexicons that have been generated using word embedding similarity (WE) and compositional semantics (CS). Our key contributions include enriching the liberty annotations, developing a robust liberty lexicon for broader application, and revealing the complexity of expressions related to liberty across different platforms. Through the evaluation, we show that the difficulty of the task calls for designing approaches that combine knowledge, in an effort of improving the representations of learning systems.

Abstract

After decades of improvements in the employment conditions of females in Spain, this process came to a sudden stop with the Great Spanish Recession of 2008. In this contribution, we analyse a large longitudinal corpus of national and regional news outlets employing advanced Natural Language Processing techniques to capture the valence of mentions of gender inequality expressed in the Spanish press. The automatic analysis of the news articles does indeed capture the known hardships faced by females in the Spanish labour market. Our approach can be straightforwardly generalised to other topics of interest. Assessing the sentiment and moral values expressed in the articles, we notice that females are, in the majority of cases, concerned more than males when there is a deterioration in the overall labour market conditions, based on newspaper articles. This behaviour has been present in the entire period of study (2000--2022) and looked particularly pronounced during the economic crisis of 2008 and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the time, this phenomenon looks to be more pronounced at the regional level, perhaps caused by a significant focus on local labour markets rather than on aggregate statistics or because, in local contexts, females might suffer more from an isolation or discrimination condition. 7. Molecular Typing of Potentially Pathogenic Escherichia coli Isolated from Fresh Pasta Filata Venezuelan Cheeses

Abstract

Background. Fresh pasta filata cheese is considered as one of the most important foods in the Venezuelan diet. It is typically produced by small-scale producers using raw milk. The objective of this research was to molecularly characterize the pathogenic potential of Escherichia coli strains isolated from pasta filata cheese manufactured and marketed in Venezuela. Methodology. In the period between January and March of 2019, a total of 36 strains of E. coli were isolated from a variety of pasta filata cheeses including 17 samples of mozzarella, 16 of telita, and 3 of guayanés. These strains were isolated according to the Venezuelan Commission of Industrial Standards (COVENIN) and identified by conventional methods (biochemical and phenotypic tests). Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using the disk diffusion technique. Phylogenetic grouping and detection of virulence genes were performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction amplification. Diversity and genetic relationships were determined by Rep-PCR. Results: All strains were susceptible to the tested antibiotics. Phylogroup A (n=19) was the most frequent (52.8%), followed by groups D (n=11; 30.6%), and B1 (n=2; 5.6%). The majority of isolates carried at least two virulence genes, one coding for adhesion mechanisms (fimH) and the other for iron uptake (fyuA). Only one strain of phylogroup A presented a profile consisting of four virulence genes (fimH, fyuA, kpsMT II, and papAH). Four strains that could not be classified according to Clermont's scheme carried resistance genes as well. A heterogeneous population structure was observed by Rep-PCR of the strains. Conclusion: Results support the hypothesis that the E. coli strains isolated from the three types of pasta filata cheeses manufactured and marketed in Venezuela have identical characteristics and virulence factors to Extraintestinal Pathogenic E. coli strains observed in animals and humans, posing a potential health risk. Therefore, it is essential to improve hygienic and sanitary controls at all stages of cheese production and to implement measures for epidemiological surveillance of potentially pathogenic bacterial strains present in Venezuelan, artisanal pasta filata cheeses. 8. Experience of a vascular ultrasound-guided program: from the ICU to the hospital

Abstract

Abstract Background The use of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) has increased worldwide in the last decade. However, PICCs are associated to catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). We describe the characteristics of patients requiring a PICC, estimate the incidence rate, and identify potential risk factors of PICC-related complications. Methods All adult patients requiring a PICC at our institution (Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, Bogota, Colombia) from September 2022 to May 2024 were included in the analysis. The database from active PICC monitoring collected demographic and PICC-related information. The incidence rate of CLABSI and CRT, and crude odds ratios (cORs) were estimated. Results Overall, 1936 individuals were included in the study. The median age was 67 years (IQR: 50–78 years), and 51.5% were females. The median duration of PICC lines was 10 days (IQR: 4–17). Seventy-nine patients had catheter-related complications, mostly in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The CLABSI and CRT institutional incidence rates per 1000 catheter-days were 2.03 (2.96 in the ICU) and 0.58 (0.61 in the ICU), respectively. Prolonged catheter use (≥ 6 days), PICC insertion in the intensive care unit, and postoperative care after cardiac surgery were identified as potential risk factors for CLABSI, while a catheter insertion into the brachial vein was associated with CRT. Conclusion Daily PICC assessment, particularly in patients with prolonged catheter use, PICC insertion into the brachial vein, or in postoperative care after cardiac surgery may significantly reduce CLABSI and CRT cases. Implementing Vascular Access Teams, venous catheter care bundles, and institutional insertion protocols optimize clinical outcomes.

9. A Cost-aware Study of Depression Language on Social Media using Topic and Affect Contextualization

Abstract

Depression is a growing issue in society's mental health that affects all areas of life and can even lead to suicide. Fortunately, prevention programs can be effective in its treatment. In this context, this work proposes an automatic system for detecting depression on social media based on machine learning and natural language processing methods. This paper presents the following contributions: (i) an ensemble learning system that combines several types of text representations for depression detection, including recent advances in the field; (ii) a contextualization schema through topic and affective information; (iii) an analysis of models' energy consumption, establishing a trade-off between classification performance and overall computational costs. To assess the proposed models' effectiveness, a thorough evaluation is performed in two datasets that model depressive text. Experiments indicate that the proposed contextualization strategies can improve the classification and that approaches that use Transformers can improve the overall F-score by 2% while augmenting the energy cost a hundred times. Finally, this work paves the way for future energy-wise systems by considering both the performance classification and the energy consumption.

Abstract

Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 is a diarrheal agent and a significant cause of hemorrhagic colitis and the development of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), mainly in infants. Early detection of contaminated food and water using reliable and fast tests is one of the strategies to prevent infections from E. coli O157:H7. Methods: Four quantitative polymerase chain reaction protocols (SYBR Green qPCR) were developed and validated to determine the presence of the bacteria according to its rfbE, stx1, and stx2 genes. Results: The results of the efficiencies were between 80% and 97% with a high linearity (R2 0.99). The cut-off limits for each primer sequence were 3.1667 × 10−2 ng µL−1 for two sequences of the serogroup O157 (primers rfbE and O157), 1.7228 × 10−3 ng µL−1 for stx1, and 3.5185 × 10−3 ng µL−1 for stx2. The inclusivity and the exclusivity of each gene, as well as the analytical precision and the positive and negative predictive value, were 100%. A contaminated meat matrix was evaluated, detecting up to 4 CFU g−1. Conclusions: SYBR Green qPCR protocols could be implemented to trace the presence of E. coli O157 in a routine analysis of ground beef or as an easy, rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic test while still considering microbiological tests to validate any inconclusive results.

Objetivo. Evaluar la implementación de estrategias de la iniciativa HEARTS en una comunidad de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela. Métodos. Estudio cuasiexperimental, con la evaluación de la cascada de cuidado, factores impulsores e índices de madurez y desempeño cuatro meses después de la implementación de la iniciativa HEARTS en la comunidad La Marroquina en 52 pacientes con hipertensión (HTA). Los datos se procesaron en el programa SPSS® versión 25.0. Se aplicaron las pruebas t-Student y de ji cuadrado para determinar la significancia estadística. Resultados. Completaron los cuatro meses de seguimiento 50 pacientes, 63,5% con baja escolaridad y estrato socioeconómico bajo o muy bajo. Al inicio, 11,5% estaba controlado, y 40,4% inició con monoterapia. Al cuarto mes, 100% de las personas hipertensas recibieron el diagnóstico, 92% recibió tratamiento y 52% alcanzó la meta de control de HTA. El 72% recibía terapia combinada. De las personas hipertensas, 70% mantenía cifras de presión arterial

La dinámica mundial de la planificación está marcada por la tendencia de asumir enfoques ecológicos y medioambientales que propenden por la sostenibilidad de los territorios. El objetivo de este artículo consiste en analizar la ecoplanificación como un sistema interconectado de la gestión organizacional y el desarrollo territorial. Metodológicamente, se empleó el diseño de investigación descriptivo explicativo para la caracterización y comprensión del objeto de estudio a partir del análisis de los cuatro (04) sectores (público, privado, educativo y sociedad) que conforman el componente estructural del territorio; cuyo procedimiento se estructuró en tres fases: diagnóstico, trabajo de campo y analítica. Los resultados develan la tendencia del sistema territorial de asumir enfoques ecológicos en la planificación, por lo que se adopta el término de ecoplanificación caracterizado por su capacidad de integración, interconexión y adaptabilidad para la preservación del medio ambiente, valoración de la biodiversidad y multiplicidad de los componentes territoriales. De allí que, la ecoplanificación toma distancia del carácter economicista que prevalece en la planeación del sector privado por no favorecer la integración con los otros actores de la sociedad ni el reconocimiento de la participación social como prioridad en los procesos de planificación y gestión. Mientras que, el sector educativo orienta los procesos formativos enmarcados en enfoques ecológicos y de complejidad creciente, fomentando el respeto por la biodiversidad y participación ciudadana por medio de la gestión integrada y adaptativa. Se concluye que ante la complejidad creciente de la dinámica socioespacial la adaptabilidad de los componentes territoriales constituye un principio orientador de los procesos de gestión y planeación con enfoque ecológico al permitir la incorporación de mecanismos generadores de equilibrio en los cambios y transformaciones de las condiciones ambientales, sociales y económicas del territorio.

Abstract

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb - 1 of s = 7 TeV p p collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t t ¯ events from backgrounds. The t t ¯ production cross section is found to be σ t t ¯ = 168.5 ± 0.7 ( stat ) - 5.9 + 6.2 ( syst ) - 3.2 + 3.4 ( lumi ) pb . The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Abstract

Este trabajo de revisión se centra en la producción fotocatalítica de hidrógeno empleando agentes de sacrificio y semiconductores modificados con nanopartículas metálicas. Mientras que el uso de agentes de sacrificio reduce la energía requerida para la producción de hidrógeno y elimina los huecos fotogenerados, la modificación superficial de los semiconductores con nanopartículas metálicas cambia el flujo de los portadores de carga fotoinducidos, disminuyendo la recombinación de los pares electrón-hueco y aumentando la cantidad de sitios activos catalíticos para la reducción. Además, se describe el impacto de las técnicas electroquímicas y fotoelectroquímicas en la caracterización de los fotocatalizadores, la interfase semiconductor/electrolito y la modificación que tiene el nivel de Fermi cuando se ponen en contacto estos componentes. Dichas determinaciones electroquímicas brindan información sobre el diagrama de bandas (posiciones de banda de valencia y/o de conducción), estados energéticos del semiconductor, interacción del fotocatalizador con los co-catalizadores, separación de las especies electrón-hueco, aprovechamiento de la iluminación y resistencia a la transferencia de carga. La relación de la actividad fotocatalítica de los semiconductores y su caracterización electroquímica permite comprender los procesos de transferencia de carga involucrados en dicha reacción.

Las empresas de Beneficio e Interés Colectivo (BIC), definidas como organizaciones que combinan la actividad empresarial con la generación de beneficios para sus trabajadores, el aporte a la equidad del país y la protección del medio ambiente, han crecido de forma significativa en un corto período de tiempo en Colombia. La presente investigación busca identificar cuáles son las principales dimensiones y variables para que las empresas BIC de Bucaramanga, Colombia, se fortalezcan y se consoliden en el tiempo, a partir de un diagnóstico estructurado tras la aplicación de una encuesta a los gerentes de empresas BIC y el análisis de datos con un modelo estadístico de regresión logística binomial. Como principales resultados, se encontró que es necesario fortalecer el acceso de las empresas a los beneficios establecidos en la normatividad, así como la forma en la que los gerentes de las organizaciones gestionan esos beneficios y los dirigen hacia sus colaboradores. Por otra parte, se logra identificar que la consolidación a futuro de estas empresas se relaciona directamente con la gestión de los colaboradores y su empoderamiento.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare life-threatening disorder characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, and organ damage. We present the case of a 71-year-old man initially diagnosed with malaria-like symptoms and displaying markers of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, renal injury, and neurological impairment. Despite antimalarial treatment, acquired TTP was suspected. Plasma exchange and immunosuppressive therapy led to clinical improvement, normalizing the platelet count and hemolytic profile. Diagnostic confirmation revealed significantly reduced ADAMTS13 levels. Following the proposed treatment, the patient's ADAMTS13 levels normalized. This case illustrates acquired TTP linked to uncomplicated Plasmodium vivax malaria.

26. LibertyMFD: A Lexicon to Assess the Moral Foundation of Liberty

Abstract

Quantifying the moral narratives expressed in the user-generated text, news, or public discourses is fundamental for understanding individuals' concerns and viewpoints and preventing violent protests and social polarisation. The Moral Foundation Theory (MFT) was developed to operationalise morality in a five-dimensional scale system. Recent developments of the theory urged for the introduction of a new foundation, the Liberty Foundation. Being only recently added to the theory, there are no available linguistic resources to assess whether liberty is present in text corpora. Given its importance to current social issues such as the vaccination debate, we propose two data-driven approaches, deriving two candidate lexicons generated based on aligned documents from online news sources with different worldviews. After extensive experimentation, we contribute to the research community a novel lexicon that assesses the liberty moral foundation in the way individuals with contrasting viewpoints express themselves through written text. Abstract

Inside the NLP community there is a considerable amount of language resources created, annotated and released every day with the aim of studying specific linguistic phenomena. Despite a variety of attempts in order to organize such resources has been carried on, a lack of systematic methods and of possible interoperability between resources are still present. Furthermore, when storing linguistic information, still nowadays, the most common practice is the concept of "gold standard", which is in contrast with recent trends in NLP that aim at stressing the importance of different subjectivities and points of view when training machine learning and deep learning methods. In this paper we present O-Dang!: The Ontology of Dangerous Speech Messages, a systematic and interoperable Knowledge Graph (KG) for the collection of linguistic annotated data. O-Dang! is designed to gather and organize Italian datasets into a structured KG, according to the principles shared within the Linguistic Linked Open Data community. The ontology has also been designed to account for a perspectivist approach, since it provides a model for encoding both gold standard and single-annotator labels in the KG. The paper is structured as follows. In Section 1 the motivations of our work are outlined. Section 2 describes the O-Dang! Ontology, that provides a common semantic model for the integration of datasets in the KG. The Ontology Population stage with information about corpora, users, and annotations is presented in Section 3. Finally, in Section 4 an analysis of offensiveness across corpora is provided as a first case study for the resource.

28. Observation of electroweak production of two jets and a Z-boson pair

Abstract

Electroweak symmetry breaking explains the origin of the masses of elementary particles through their interactions with the Higgs field. Besides the measurements of the Higgs boson properties, the study of the scattering of massive vector bosons with spin 1 allows the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking to be probed. Among all processes related to vector-boson scattering, the electroweak production of two jets and a Z-boson pair is a rare and important one. Here we report the observation of this process from proton–proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider two different final states originating from the decays of the Z-boson pair: one containing four charged leptons and another containing two charged leptons and two neutrinos. The hypothesis of no electroweak production is rejected with a statistical significance of 5.7σ, and the measured cross-section for electroweak production is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, we report cross-sections for inclusive production of a Z-boson pair and two jets for the two final states.

Abstract

A measurement of the top-quark mass (mt) in the tt¯ → lepton + jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of b-hadrons produced in the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass mℓμ of the lepton, ℓ (with ℓ = e, μ), from the W-boson decay and the muon, μ, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract mt. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of s = 13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is mt = 174.41 ± 0.39 (stat.) ± 0.66 (syst.) ± 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the Pythia8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup. 34. Importance of glycoalkaloids analysis (α-solanine and α-chaconine) derived from potato consumption in pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the Americas

Abstract

In the pre-Columbian societies of the Americas, a wide range of food practices was observed. However, several countries shared certain staple foods, such as the potato, which has held a significant place in the diet since ancient times. It is important to note that potatoes contain glycoalkaloids, a class of alkaloids with potential toxicity risks when consumed in high concentrations by both humans and animals. This study aims to offer guidance on the presence of glycoalkaloids in potatoes and proposes further research into these compounds in archaeological remains that were utilized as food across all American countries. This recommendation stems from the dearth of studies on this subject, particularly in cases where archaeological discoveries include potato starch granules. In this study, various databases were examined to discover historical insights into the potato and to elucidate the primary aspects of glycoalkaloid chemistry associated with this tuber. The findings underscore the crucial role played by the potato in pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas, particularly in the regions situated along the Andes mountain range. Furthermore, the analysis of its nutritional composition unveiled the prevalence of two key glycoalkaloids in the tuber: α-solanine and α-chaconine. In this research, a comprehensive review of the chemical properties, botanical functions, human metabolism, potential health effects, toxicity thresholds, and available analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of toxic compounds was conducted. The significance of identifying these molecules in archaeological contexts was highlighted, as their presence may prompt investigations into prevalent diseases among historical populations.

Abstract

A network of agronomists, researchers, and practitioners associated with cacao farming provided open access to their independent field trials across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). A centralized dataset was assembled using qualitative and quantitative data from 25 experimental field trials (hereafter referred to as “CacaoFIT”) spanning several LAC agroecosystems. This dataset was used to document the main traits and agroclimatic attributes of the cacao cultivation model being tested within the CacaoFIT network. By synthesizing data from an entire network of cacao trials, this study aimed to highlight specific design features and management practices that may contribute to better cacao farming sustainability. The CacaoFIT network comprises 200 ha of field trials testing over 150 cacao genotypes and set up under different shade canopy design, management, and research goals. Small-sized trials were common across Mesoamerica, whereas medium to large-size trials were distinct to South America. Cacao trials were 15 years old (on average) and ranged from 3 to 25 years of establishment. Most cacao trials were managed conventionally (i.e., 55%), while 20% were under organic practices, and the remaining 25% presented both conventional and organic management approaches. Most field trials (ca. 60%) planted an average of 10 international clones or national cultivars at high (1,230–1,500 plants ha−1) and medium density (833–1,111 plants ha−1). Mixed shade canopies were the dominant agroforestry model, while timber vs. leguminous shade canopies were also common. The diversity and depth of research domains examined across the CacaoFIT network varied widely. Agronomy and agroforestry topics dominated the research agenda across all trials, followed by environmental services domains. Cacao physiology and financial performance were researched to a lesser extent within the network. Five featured field trials from CacaoFIT offered technical guidelines to inform cacao farming within similar contexts. This collaborative work is a scaffold to encourage public–private partnerships, capacity building, and data sharing amongst cacao researchers across the tropics.

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación es proponer un modelo de planeación estratégica para el crecimiento de las microempresas de servicios profesionales, científicos y técnicos en México. Se aplicó una metodología cuantitativa con un diseño de investigación de tipo no experimental transversal correlacional a una muestra de 174 directivos. Los hallazgos exponen nueve cargas factoriales asociadas débilmente con la literatura respectiva, mostrando una discrepancia entre la teoría y la realidad. Los principales hallazgos de esta investigación incluyen el desarrollo de un modelo conceptual integrado por varios componentes, como filosofía, objetivos a largo, mediano y corto plazo, políticas, estrategias, reglas, procedimientos, programas y presupuestos. Estos componentes están vinculados mediante un sistema de control estratégico, táctico y operacional específico para las empresas objeto de estudio. En general, el artículo presenta una contribución al campo de la planeación estratégica para microempresas en México.

Abstract

BackgroundStaphylococcus aureus infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric populations worldwide. The Staphylo Research Network conducted an extensive study on pediatric patients across Colombia from 2018 to 2021. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of S. aureus in this patient group.MethodsWe analyzed S. aureus isolates from WHONET-reporting centers. An “event” was a positive culture isolation in a previously negative individual after 2 weeks. We studied center characteristics, age distribution, infection type, and antibiotic susceptibilities, comparing methicillin sensitive (MSSA) and resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates.ResultsIsolates from 20 centers across 7 Colombian cities were included. Most centers (80%) served both adults and children, with 55% offering oncology services and 85% having a PICU. We registered 8,157 S. aureus culture isolations from 5,384 events (3,345 MSSA and 1,961 MRSA) in 4,821 patients, with a median age of 5 years. Blood (26.2%) and skin/soft tissue (18.6%) were the most common infection sources. Most isolates per event remained susceptible to oxacillin (63.2%), clindamycin (94.3%), and TMP-SMX (98.3%). Abstract

The incorporation of different amounts of Gum Arabic (GA) in thermoplastic starch (TPS) obtained by extrusion and subsequent thermocompression has been studied. The sheets have been characterized by means of XRD, FTIR, TGA, moisture content, SEM, mechanical properties, antimicrobial activity and biodegradability via composting. The FTIR analysis of the sheets shows the presence of ester groups, while the TGA shows the presence of new processes and a residue much higher than expected is obtained. No changes in crystallinity are observed by XRD. The inclusion of GA confers antimicrobial properties to thermoplastic starch against the Gram + and Gram – bacteria studied even at the smaller concentrations. For a low GA content (0.5 and 1 g GA/100 g TPS) a homogeneous material is observed by SEM, as well as an important increase in tensile strength, modulus and deformation at break, which are very interesting properties facing the applicability of this material in single use plastics which are in contact with food or other consumable goods. At higher contents of GA, hollows and cracks appear in the material, compromising the mechanical properties. In all cases, the inclusion of GA delays the biodegradation process in soil, which can be related to its antibacterial capacity and especially in case of GA concentrations of 2 and 5 g/100 g of TPS with lower humidity of these TPS sheets.

Abstract

Longtime bedridden patients may have serious problems from the immobilization and a reposition of their body can be often request at least to mitigate effects in pulmonary complications and pressure ulcers. This paper approaches the problem on how to give basic movements to those patients to help in those situations by permitting body repositioning through movements of bed segments. The solution is proposed in term of design of structure and control of a robotized hospital-type bed in which the bed structure is portioned in segments that are properly activated and controlled by a specific mechanism with a specific controlled operation. The proposed solution is tested and characterized via simulations whose results verify the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed solution for a future implementation in hospital frames.

Abstract

This paper presents studies of Bose–Einstein correlations (BEC) in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data from the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data were collected in a special low-luminosity configuration with a minimum-bias trigger and a high-multiplicity track trigger, accumulating integrated luminosities of 151 μ b- 1 and 8.4 nb- 1, respectively. The BEC are measured for pairs of like-sign charged particles, each with | η| < 2.5 , for two kinematic ranges: the first with particle pT> 100 MeV and the second with particle pT> 500 MeV. The BEC parameters, characterizing the source radius and particle correlation strength, are investigated as functions of charged-particle multiplicity (up to 300) and average transverse momentum of the pair (up to 1.5 GeV). The double-differential dependence on charged-particle multiplicity and average transverse momentum of the pair is also studied. The BEC radius is found to be independent of the charged-particle multiplicity for high charged-particle multiplicity (above 100), confirming a previous observation at lower energy. This saturation occurs independent of the transverse momentum of the pair.

48. Measured and Unmeasured Contributions of Peer Education: Experiences from the 'Get Up, Speak out for Youth Rights!' (GUSO) Programme in Kisumu and Siaya Counties, Kenya

Abstract

Peer education is a widely used strategy in sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) programmes for young people, yet measurement of its effectiveness often focuses on a narrow set of outcomes. This qualitative study explored how peer education was integrated into the "Get Up, Speak Out for Youth Rights!" (GUSO) programme in Kisumu and Siaya Counties, Kenya and the contribution it made to measured and unmeasured outcomes. Findings indicate that whilst peer educators were a central part of the GUSO theory of change, the intentionality of design varied between partners and sites, and their contributions were formally measured only in relation to two of five outcome areas. In addition to their contributions to these measured outcomes, the study found that peer educators also contributed to a range of other, unmeasured outcomes related to community support and mobilisation; gender norms; and economic empowerment. Findings show that peer educators may contribute to many unmeasured -- and sometimes unexpected -- outcomes that go beyond traditional measurement of their contributions. These merit further exploration in the literature and in programming. Programme developers are encouraged to be more intentional in the design and measurement of peer education, ensuring that the breadth of its contribution to programming are recognised.
