Background: Biosurfactants are natural bioactive compounds produced from fungi, bacteria and plants. These molecules have several properties that enable them to be involved in various industrial applications. The surface-active properties of biosurfactants allow their use in various sectors, such as agriculture, health, cosmetics, bioremediation/ petroleum, mining, and bioprocess. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the patents deposited in intellectual property databases for applications of biosurfactants in the areas of agriculture, health, cosmetics, bioremediation/petroleum, mining, and bioprocesses, with the research period consisting of the last six years. Methods: This study targeted the use of biosurfactants in various industrial sectors. The patent search was carried out using the Google Patents platform, a platform that is commonly used for this purpose and freely accessible. Results: During the search for patents related to applications of biosurfactants in industry filed in the last 6 years, results were found to be distributed in the following areas: agriculture (70), cosmetics (2311), bioremediation/petroleum (179), health (1794), mining (5), and bioprocess (133). Six patents were selected from each area, except for health and mining, for which the search resulted in only 5 and 4 patents, respectively, to be discussed and provide information on the biotechnological applications of biosurfactants in the industry. Conclusion: The present study showed a wide area of application of biosurfactants in industry. The interest in the inclusion of biosurfactants in the industry is directly related to the need for more sustainable solutions to solve real market problems. The cosmetics sector presented the most patents that employ the use of biosurfactants.

The water systems inside a dental unit are known to be contaminated with a multi-kingdom biofilm encompassing bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Aerosolization of these micro-organisms can potentially create a health hazard for both dental staff and the patient. Very little is known on the efficacy of dental unit disinfection products against amoeba. In this study we have examined the effect of four different treatment regimens, with the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) containing product Oxygenal, on an in-vitro multi-kingdom dental unit water system (DUWS) biofilm. The treatment efficacy was assessed in time using heterotrophic plate counts, the bacterial 16S rDNA, fungal 18S rDNA gene load and the number of genomic units for Legionella spp. the amoeba Vermamoeba vermiformis. The results indicated that a daily treatment of the DUWS with a low dose H2O2 (0.02% for 5 h), combined with a weekly shock dose (0.25% H2O2, 30 min) is necessary to reduce the heterotrophic plate count of a severely contaminated DUWS (>106 CFU.mL−1) to below 100 CFU.mL−1. A daily treatment with a low dose hydrogen peroxide alone, is sufficient for the statistically significant reduction of the total amount of bacterial 16S rDNA gene, Legionella spp. and Vermamoeba vermiformis load (p < 0.005). Also shown is that even though hydrogen peroxide does not kill the trophozoite nor the cysts of V. vermiformis, it does however result in the detachment of the trophozoite form of this amoeba from the DUWS biofilm and hereby ultimately removing the amoeba from the system.

Background: Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is botanically classified as a herbaceous biennial belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family and has several varieties with bulb colors ranging from yellow to red. Peroxidases are widely occurring in organisms including microorganisms, plants, and animals, and have been involved in various physiological and biochemical functions. Objective: The study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of enzyme extracts from red beet leaves, root pulp, and peel. Methods: The enzyme extraction involved the homogenization of the sample and filtrate in cold acetone and then the filtrate was homogenized in 0.1M sodium acetate buffer, pH 7. The protein content was determined using the Lowry assay using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a standard protein. Then, enzymatic activity was determined by peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and catalase assays. The patent for biological activity of enzymes was obtained from the Office of Career Development, Haramaya University. The antioxidant activities of the enzyme extract were conducted by using DPPH and hydrogen peroxide free radical scavenging activities. Results: The result indicated that the Enzymatic activity of crude enzyme extract of red beet leaf, root pulp and peel indicated that significantly the highest total soluble protein (16.68 mg/ml), peroxidase activity (PODA, 111.50 U/ml), polyphenol oxidase activity (PPOA, 170.90 U/ml), polyphenol oxidase specific activity (PPOspa, 10.25 U/mg), catalase activity (CATA, 180.50 U/ml) and catalase specific activity (CATspa, 10.82 U/mg), were recorded for red beet leaf enzyme extract. The antioxidant activity of the enzyme extracts demonstrated that significantly higher DPPH radical scavenging activity of leaf extract (59.16) and peel extract (61.92) were recorded. The Pearson correlation coefficient of enzyme activity parameters and free radical scavenging activities presented that protein content was significantly and positively correlated with CATA, PPOA, and PPOspa. Catalase- specific activity (CATspa) was significant and positively correlated only with HPSA. Peroxidase-specific activity (PODspa) was significant and positively correlated with PODA and DPPH. Based on the plot for principal component PC2 vs. PC1 for D statistics DPPH, PODA, and PODspa have close PC1 and PC2 scores (with vector angle < 90 showing similar/correlated effects. Conclusion: In this study, B. vulgaris has shown promising peroxidase enzyme activity. Beetroot peel contained higher antioxidant compounds thus promising a more intense utilization of the peels in food and nutraceuticals.

Abstract: The world is on the cusp of a post-antibiotic period. A century ago, before the advent of antibiotics, bacteriophage therapy was the treatment of choice for bacterial infections. Although bacteriophages have yet to be approved as a treatment in Western medicine, researchers and clinicians have begun to anticipate phage therapy. Bacteriophages are viruses that depend on bacterial cell metabolism to multiply. They offer a promising alternative to the use of antibiotics and an excellent antibacterial option for combating multidrug resistance in bacteria. However, not every phage is suitable for phage therapy. In particular, prophages should not be used because they can lysogenize host cells instead of lysing them. To offer adequate therapeutic options for patients suffering from various infectious diseases, a wide selection of different phages is needed. While there is no evidence of direct toxicity induced by phage particles, it is crucial to study mammalian cell–phage interactions. This requires phage preparations to be free of bacterial cells, toxins and other compounds to avoid skewing host responses. Negative staining of purified viruses and electron microscopy remain the gold standard in the identification of bacteriophages. Interestingly, genomics has greatly changed our understanding of phage biology. Bacteriophage genome sequencing is essential to obtain a complete understanding of the bacteriophages' biology and to obtain confirmation of their lifestyle. Full genetic sequencing of bacteriophage will enable a better understanding of the phage-encoded proteins and biomolecules (especially phage lytic enzymes) involved in the process of bacterial cell lysis and death. Mass spectrometry can be used for the identification of phage structural proteins. The use of lytic phages as biocontrol agents requires the most appropriate and standard methods to ensure application safety. This review pursues recent research and methods in molecular biology for the isolation and characterization of phages to facilitate follow-up and implementation of work for other researchers. Patents related to this topic have been mentioned in the text.

Abstract: There is a current tendency towards bioactive natural products that can be used in different areas such as food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical. In the last decades, polysaccharides have attracted increasing interest because of their potent nontoxic effects, therapeutic properties, and diversified range of applications. Polysaccharides are complex and heterogeneous macromolecules constituted of different monosaccharides and, in some cases, of glucuronic acid and sulphate groups. Polysaccharides with biological activity can be derived from plants, animals and microorganisms, especially microalgae. Microalgae are considered one of the most promising sources of these compounds that have already proved to have several important biological properties. In this sense, our objective is to elucidate the use of bioactive polysaccharides from microalgae in biomedical applications, emphasizing the biological activity of these compounds. Furthermore, the microalgal biomass production systems and polysaccharides extraction methods were presented and discussed.

Abstract: Different compounds with bioactive constitutents can be applied as biostimulants to increase plant growth and development under both normal and stressful conditions. Biostimulants utilization can be considered as a sustainable and beneficial nutritional crop management, and may decrease the negative impacts associated with excessive chemical fertilization. Google scholar (scholar.google.com), Science Direct (sicencedirect.com), CAB Direct (cabdirect.org), Springer Link (springerlink.com), Scopus (scopus.com), Web of Science (web of knowledge.com), Taylor and Francis (tandfonline.com), and Wiley Online Library (onlinelibrary.wiley.com) have been checked. The search was done to all manuscript sections according to terms "Glomus intraradices", "Trichoderma atroviride", "Trichoderma reesei", "Heteroconium chaetospira", "Artherobacter spp.", "Acinetobacter spp.", "Enterobacer spp.", "Pseudomonas spp.", "Ochrobactrum spp.", "Bacilus spp.", "Rhodococcus spp.", "Biostimulants", and "Plant growth promotion". On the basis of initial check, Titles and Abstracts have been reviwed on the basis of online literature, and then articles were read carefully. Withinin the framework of sustainable crop management, this review article was aimed to provide an overview of the application of the most common fungi and bacteria as plant biostimulants on various crops.

Abstract: Despite an ever-increasing need for newer, safer, more effective, and more affordable therapies to treat a multitude of diseases and conditions, drug development takes too long, costs too much, and is too uncertain to be undertaken without the conferment of exclusionary rights or entry barriers to motivate and sustain investment in it. These entry barriers take the form of patents that protect intellectual property and marketing exclusivity provisions that are provided by statute. This review focuses on the basic ins and outs of regulatory and patent exclusivities for which new chemical entities (NCEs), referring to never-before approved drugs with an entirely new active ingredient, are eligible and uses RRx-001, a small molecule aerospace-derived NCE in development for the treatment of cancer, radiation toxicity, and diseases of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, as a “real world” example. This is intended as a ‘101-type’ of primer; its aim is to help developers of original pharmaceuticals navigate the maze of patents, other IP regulations, and statutory exclusivities in major markets so that they can make proper use of them.

Background: Artemia is considered an indispensable live food for rearing many fish and crustacean larvae and can be used in toxicity tests as a safe, practical, and economical method. It is straightforward to create and manipulate; however, many cysts do not hatch as expected. Methods: A new device was used to hatch Artemia salina. The device includes a tubularshaped reservoir, lid with a central hole, heater with a thermostat, air compressor, three porous stones, funnel-shaped bottom, light source, collection valve, switch, and electrical outlet, which permits better control of temperature and aeration in a single apparatus. Different patent devices were used for comparative analysis. Results: Hatched eggs of Artemia showed that the device was 97% efficient; in comparison, commercial and other devices hatched approximately less than 80% of the cysts. Although Artemia is an easy-to-handle animal, the device described here facilitates changes in the growth parameters and produces more nauplii larvae. Conclusion: This paper presents a new device that is effective, compact, and successful for hatching brine shrimp cysts, thereby improving Artemia production.

The transition in the field of bone tissue engineering from bone regeneration to in vitro models has come with the challenge of recreating a dense and anisotropic bone-like extracellular matrix (ECM). Although the mechanism by which bone ECM gains its structure is not fully understood, mechanical loading and curvature have been identified as potential contributors. Here, guided by computational simulations, we evaluated cell and bone-like tissue growth and organization in a concave channel with and without directional fluid flow stimulation. Human mesenchymal stromal cells were seeded on donut-shaped silk fibroin scaffolds and osteogenically stimulated for 42 days statically or in a flow perfusion bioreactor. After 14, 28, and 42 days, constructs were investigated for cell and tissue growth and organization. As a result, directional fluid flow was able to improve organic tissue growth but not organization. Cells tended to orient in the tangential direction of the channel, possibly attributed to its curvature. Based on our results, we suggest that organic ECM production but not anisotropy can be stimulated through the application of fluid flow. With this study, an initial attempt in three-dimensions was made to improve the resemblance of in vitro produced bone-like ECM to the physiological bone ECM.
