Smart contracts are tempting targets of attacks, as they often hold and manipulate significant financial assets, are immutable after deployment, and have publicly available source code, with assets estimated in the order of millions of dollars being lost in the past due to vulnerabilities. Formal verification is thus a necessity, but smart contracts challenge the existing highly efficient techniques routinely applied in the symbolic verification of software, due to specificities not present in general programming languages. A common feature of existing works in this area is the attempt to reuse off-the-shelf verification tools designed for general programming languages. This reuse can lead to inefficiency and potentially unsound results, as domain translation is required. In this article, we describe a carefully crafted approach that directly models the central aspects of smart contracts natively, going from the contract to its logical representation without intermediary steps. We use the expressive and highly automatable logic of constrained Horn clauses for modeling and instantiate our approach to the Solidity language. A tool implementing our approach, called Solicitous , was developed and integrated into the SMTChecker module of the Solidity compiler solc. We evaluated our approach on an extensive benchmark set containing 22,446 real-world smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum blockchain over a 27-month period. The results show that our approach is able to establish safety of significantly more contracts than comparable, publicly available verification tools, with an order of magnitude increase in the percentage of formally verified contracts.

Ice nucleating particles (INPs) are particles in the atmosphere that are able to initiate the freezing of water droplets, a process known as ice nucleation. INPs are important to study because they play a crucial role in many atmospheric processes, including the formation of clouds, precipitation, and the radiative properties of clouds. For example, INPs can influence the concentration, size, and shape of ice crystals in clouds, which can in turn affect the reflectivity and lifetime of the clouds. This can have significant impacts on Earth's radiative balance and climate. The most relevant process of ice crystal formation in mixed-phase clouds (MPC) is by immersion freezing (Ansmann et al., 2009). Immersion freezing takes place when an INP is immersed in a water droplet and freezing is triggered on the particle's surface. In this research, we present a series of INP concentration measurements obtained using a novel assay under development at the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki. The focus of our research is to evaluate the consistency and replicability of these measurements. To determine the contribution of different aerosols to the INP spectrum at different temperatures, we collect atmospheric particles onto membrane filters and analyze the concentration of INPs in a laboratory freezing experiment. In this experiment, we produce an aqueous solution with collected atmospheric particles and monitor identical aliquots of the aqueous solution while they are cooled until freezing. Finally, using the frozen fraction of aliquots at a given temperature, the volume of each aliquot, and the sample's air volume, the cumulative number of INPs in the given sample at each temperature is calculated following (Vali, 2019). Three automatic samplers were run in parallel to collect particles onto the membrane filters using different sampling schemes. For example, collecting daily samples with three different sampling flows. Objectives: Early hearing aid (HA) fitting and cochlear implants (CIs) aim to reduce the effects of hearing loss (HL) on spoken language development. The goals of this study were (1) to examine spoken language skills of children with bilateral HAs and children with bilateral CIs; (2) to compare their language skills to the age-norms of peers with normal hearing (NH); and (3) to investigate factors associated with spoken language outcomes. Design: Spoken language results of 56 Finnish children with HL were obtained from a nationwide prospective multicenter study. Children with HL comprised two groups: children with mild-to-severe HL who used bilateral HAs (BiHA group, n = 28) and children with profound HL who used bilateral CIs (BiCI group, n = 28). Children's spoken language comprehension, expressive and receptive vocabulary, and phonological skills were compared with normative values of children with NH at the age of three years. Odds ratio (OR) was calculated to compare proportions of children below age-norms in BiHA and BiCI groups. Factors associated with spoken language outcomes were modeled with analysis of covariance. Results: At the age of 3 years, 50%-96% of children with HL performed 1 SD or more below the mean of the normative sample of age-peers with NH in spoken language skills, depending on the language domain. Receptive vocabulary and phonological skills were the most vulnerable language domains. In receptive vocabulary, 82% of the children in the BiHA group and 50% of the children in the BiCI group scored 1 SD or more below the normative mean. The BiHA group was 4.4 times more likely to have poorer receptive vocabulary than the BiCI group. In phonological skills, 96% of children in the BiHA group and 60% of the children in the BiCI group scored 1 SD or more below the normative mean. The BiHA group was 18.0 times more likely to have poorer phonological skills than the BiCI group. The analysis of covariance models showed that unaided pure-tone average, PTA0.5-4 kHz, had a significant effect on spoken language comprehension in the BiHA group. For the BiCI group, age at HL diagnosis and age at CI activation had a significant effect on expressive vocabulary. High maternal level of education had a significant effect on language comprehension and expressive vocabulary and female gender on phonological skills. Conclusions: At the age of 3 years, especially receptive vocabulary and phonological skills caused difficulties for children with HL showing also considerable individual variation. Children with bilateral HAs seemed to be more likely to have poorer receptive vocabulary and phonological skills than children with bilateral CIs. A variety of factors was associated with outcomes in both groups. Close monitoring of spoken language skills of children with HL is important for ensuring similar opportunities for all children with HL and timely intervention, when needed. publishedVersion

Objectives To explore the opinions, the usage and the patient education given on nasal saline irrigation by physicians and pharmaceutical personnel working in Finland. Design An internet-based survey with predetermined, multiple-choice answers. Setting Primary care centres, occupational health centres and private care centres in Eastern Finland as well as pharmacies in Finland. Main outcome measures Healthcare professionals views, practice and general knowledge of nasal irrigation for sinonasal symptoms and conditions. Results We received 595 completed surveys (110 physicians, 485 pharmacists). The majority of the respondents recommended nasal saline irrigation for their patients either as a symptomatic treatment (98.0%) or to treat a specific condition (97.5%) such as acute rhinosinusitis, chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis. Nasal saline irrigation was also often recommended as a prophylaxis for airway-infections (71.9%) and to enhance the health of the nasal mucosa (58.2%). In general, the possible adverse effects were recognised poorly by both professions. There was a clear difference between the two professions, as physicians were more conservative in recommending nasal saline irrigation and recognised possible adverse effects, such as epistaxis, pain, and dryness of the nose, better (75% vs. 59%, p = 0.002). Conclusions Nasal saline irrigation seems to be a popular treatment recommended by many health care professionals in Finland. Physicians and pharmaceutical personnel had variable opinions on the indications, utility and risks of nasal saline irrigation. There are also clear differences between physicians and pharmaceutical personnel’s practices. There is a need to better educate professionals about nasal saline irrigation and to further study whether nasal saline irrigation is efficient and safe option for the different common sinonasal conditions.KEY POINTSLittle information is available on how physicians and pharmacists recommend nasal saline irrigation as a symptomatic treatment.Physicians and pharmacists seem to have variable opinions about the indications, utility and safety of nasal saline irrigation.The patient education given is in general very heterogenous.Both professions require more education to ensure that the usage remains as safe as possible for the patient.

The susceptibility of cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentration is one of the major factors controlling the aerosol indirect forcing. In this study we investigate the sensitivity of CDNC to CCN concentrations using long term in-situ observations from three stations (Puijo, Pallas, Zeppelin) locating in Finland and Arctic. These stations represent semiurban, remote and Arctic remote environments with differences in typical updraft velocity conditions as well as in aerosol number concentrations. We compare the in-situ observations with three large scale models (ECHAM-M7, ECHAM-SALSA and NorESM) having differences in aerosol presentation while the activation parametrization is the same in all three model setups. In the comparison we use CDNC and CCN model outputs of the gridbox corresponding to the location and the height for each station. In addition, we compare the updraft velocities from the models and stations when they are available. Our current observational results show very high susceptibility of CDNC and CCN in all investigated stations. The agreement between the large scale models and observations was very good for Puijo and Pallas stations, but for the Arctic station (Zeppelin) the modelled CDNC susceptibility to CCN was much lower than the observed. This might be related to the recent results demonstrating that Aitken mode particles can active to cloud droplets at Zeppelin station (Bulatovic et al., 2021; Karlsson et al., 2021). International audience; Snow darkening by deposited light-absorbing particles (LAP) accelerates snowmelt and shifts the snow melt-out date (MOD). Here, we present a simple approach to estimate the snow albedo variability due to LAP deposition and test this method with data for 2 seasons (February–May 2016 and December 2016–June 2017) at a high-altitude valley site in the Central Himalayas, India. We derive a parameterization for the snow albedo that only depends on the daily observations of average ambient temperature and change in snow depth, as well as an assumed average concentration of LAP in snow precipitation. Linear regression between observed and parameterized albedo for the base case assuming an equivalent elemental carbon concentration [ECeq] of 100 ng g–1 in snow precipitation yields a slope of 0.75 and a Pearson correlation coefficient r2 of 0.76. However, comparing the integrated amount of shortwave radiation absorbed during the winter season using observed albedo versus base case albedo resulted in rather small differences of 11% and 4% at the end of Seasons 1 and 2, respectively. The enhanced energy absorbed due to LAP at the end of the 2 seasons for the base case scenario (assuming an [ECeq] of 100 ng g–1 in snow precipitation) was 40% and 36% compared to pristine snow. A numerical evaluation with different assumed [ECeq] in snow precipitation suggests that the relative sensitivity of snow albedo to changes in [ECeq] remains rather constant for the 2 seasons. Doubling [ECeq] augments the absorption by less than 20%, highlighting that the impact on a MOD is small even for a doubling of average LAP in snow precipitation.

COVID-19 has highlighted the need for indoor risk-reduction strategies. Our aim is to provide information about the virus dispersion and attempts to reduce the infection risk. Indoor transmission was studied simulating a dining situation in a restaurant. Aerosolized Phi6 viruses were detected with several methods. The aerosol dispersion was modeled by using the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) technique. Three risk-reduction strategies were studied: (1) augmenting ventilation with air purifiers, (2) spatial partitioning with dividers, and (3) combination of 1 and 2. In all simulations infectious viruses were detected throughout the space proving the existence long-distance aerosol transmission indoors. Experimental cumulative virus numbers and LES dispersion results were qualitatively similar. The LES results were further utilized to derive the evolution of infection probability. Air purifiers augmenting the effective ventilation rate by 65% reduced the spatially averaged infection probability by 30%-32%. This relative reduction manifests with approximately 15 min lag as aerosol dispersion only gradually reaches the purifier units. Both viral findings and LES results confirm that spatial partitioning has a negligible effect on the mean infection-probability indoors, but may affect the local levels adversely. Exploitation of high-resolution LES jointly with microbiological measurements enables an informative interpretation of the experimental results and facilitates a more complete risk assessment.

Background Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumor originating from the vestibulocochlear nerve. The optimal treatment strategy is debated, since surgery may result in iatrogenic facial nerve injury. We report the results of VS surgery in a population-based unselected cohort in a center with access to Cyber Knife (CK) radiosurgery. Methods We reviewed 117 consecutive operations and found 95 patients who had their primary operation due to vestibular schwannoma between 2001 and 2017. Facial nerve function was evaluated with the House-Brackmann (HB) scale and hearing with the EU classification. Results The population consisted of 37 males and 58 females with a median age of 54 years (range 19–79). One year after surgery 67% of patients had a good outcome (HB 1–2). The rate of good outcome was 90% if no facial nerve damage was observed during intraoperative monitoring, the size of the tumor was under 30 mm and no hydrocephalus was present. During the study period, the treatment strategy changed from total to near-total resection after the introduction of CK radiosurgery, which could be used as a second-line treatment in case of residual tumor regrowth. Snow darkening by deposited light-absorbing particles (LAP) has the potential to accelerate snowmelt and shift the snow melt-out date. Here we investigate the sensitivity of the seasonal snow cover duration to changes in LAP at a high altitude valley site in the Central Himalayas, India. First, the variation of the albedo of the seasonal snow was emulated using two seasons of automatic weather station (AWS) data and applying a constant, but realistic deposition of LAP to the snow. Then, the number of days with snowmelt were evaluated based on the estimated net energy budget of the seasonal snow cover and the derived surface temperature. The impact on the energy budget by LAP combined with the melt-day analysis resulted in very simple relations to determine the contribution of LAP to the number of days with snowmelt of the seasonal snow in Himalaya. Above a concentration of 1 ng g-1 (Elemental Carbon equivalent, ECeq, which in this study includes EC and the absorption equivalent EC contribution by other light absorbing particles, such as mineral dust) in new snow, the number of days with snowmelt can be estimated by; days=0.0109(log⁡(〖EC〗_eq )+1)PP±0.0033(log⁡(〖EC〗_eq )+1)PP, where PP is the seasonal precipitation in mm snow water equivalent. A change in ECeq by a factor of two corresponds to about 1/3 of a day per 100 mm precipitation. Although the change in the number of days with melt caused by the changes in ECeq is small, the estimated total change in the snow melt-out date by LAP can be significant. For our realistic base case scenario for the Sunderdhunga Valley, Central Himalayas, India, of ECeq=100 ng g-1 and PP=400 mm, this yields in an advancement of the melt-out date of about 13 days.

Black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC, including brown carbon BrC) aerosols in the atmosphere, and their wet and dry deposition, are important for their climatic and cryospheric effects. Seemingly small amounts of BC in snow, of the order of 10–100 parts per billion by mass (ppb), have been shown to decrease its albedo by 1–5 %. Due to the albedo-feedback mechanism, surface darkening accelerates snow and ice melt. In snow, the temporal variability of light absorbing aerosols, such as BC, depends both on atmospheric and cryospheric processes, mostly on sources and atmospheric transport, and dry and wet deposition processes, as well as post-depositional snow processes.We started a new research activity on BC and OC wet and dry deposition at Helsinki Kumpula SMEAR III station (60°12 N, 24°57 E, Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations, https://www.atm.helsinki.fi/SMEAR/index.php/smear-iii). The work included winter, spring, summer and autumn deposition samples during January 2019 - June 2020 (sampling is currently on hold). In winter, wet deposition consisted of snowfall and rainwater samples. Dry deposition samples were separately collected in 2020. For sample collection, a custom-made device, including a heating-system, was applied. The samples were analyzed using the OCEC analyzer of the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s aerosol laboratory, Helsinki, Finland. The special features in our deposition data are: seasonal BC, OC, and TC (total carbon, the sum of BC and OC) deposition data for an urban background station at 60 oN precipitation received as either water or snow dry deposition samples included (only in 2020) data as wet and dry deposition rates [concentration/time/area] simultaneous atmospheric measurements of the SMEAR III station Since our deposition samples are collected manually, the data are non-continuous, yet they allow us to provide deposition rates. Such data can be utilized in various modeling approaches including, for example, climate and long-range transport and deposition modeling. According to our knowledge, these data are the first BC (determined as elemental carbon, EC), OC and TC wet and dry deposition data to represent Finland. Our sampling location, north of 60 deg. N, can be useful for other high-latitude studies and Arctic assessments, too.Acknowledgements. Long-term measurements of black carbon (BC) are warranted for investigating changes in its emission, transport, and deposition. However, depending on instrumentation, parameters related to BC such as aerosol absorption coefficient (babs) have been measured instead. Most ground-based measurements of babs in the Arctic have been made by filter-based absorption photometers, including multi-angle absorption photometers (MAAP), particle soot absorption photometers (PSAP), continuous light absorption photometer (CLAP), and Aethalometers. The measured babs can be converted to atmospheric mass concentrations of BC (MBC) by assuming the value of the mass absorption cross section (MAC = babs/MBC). However, the accuracy of conversion of babs to MBC has not been adequately assessed. Here, we introduce a systematic method for deriving MAC values from babs measured by these instruments and independently measured MBC. In this method, MBC was measured with a filter-based absorption photometer with a heated inlet (COSMOS). COSMOS-derived MBC (MBC (COSMOS)) is traceable to a rigorously calibrated single particle soot photometer (SP2) and the absolute accuracy of MBC (COSMOS) has been demonstrated previously to be about 15 % in Asia and the Arctic. The necessary conditions for application of this method are a high correlation of the measured babs with independently measured MBC, and long-term stability of the correlation slope, which represents the MAC. In general, babs – MBC (COSMOS) correlations were high (r2 = 0.84–0.96 for hourly data) at Fukue in Japan, Barrow in Alaska, Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard, Pallastunturi in Finland, and Alert in Canada, and stable up to for 10 years. We successfully estimated MAC values (11.0–15.2 m2 g−1 at a wavelength of 550 nm) for these instruments and these MAC values can be used to obtain error-constrained estimates of MBC from babs measured at these sites even in the past, when COSMOS measurements were not made. Because the absolute values of MBC in these Arctic sites estimated by this method are consistent with each other, they are applicable to study spatial and temporal variation of MBC and to evaluate performance of numerical model calculations.

The Arctic absorbing aerosols have a high potential to accelerate global warming. Accurate and sensitive measurements of their concentrations, variability and atmospheric mixing are needed. Filter-based aerosol light absorption measurement methods are the most widely applied in the Arctic. Those will be the focus of this study. Aerosol light absorption was measured during one month field campaign in June–July 2019 at the Pallas Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) station in northern Finland. The campaign provided a real-world test for different absorption measurement techniques supporting the goals of the EMPIR BC metrology project in developing aerosol absorption standard and reference methods. Very low aerosol concentrations prevailed during the campaign which imposed a challenge for the instruments detection. In this study we compare the results from five filter-based absorption techniques: Aethalometer models AE31 and AE33, Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP), Multi Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) and Continuous Soot Monitoring System (COSMOS), and from one indirect method called Extinction Minus Scattering (EMS). The sensitivity of the filter-based techniques was adequate to measure aerosol light absorption coefficients down to around 0.05 Mm−1 levels. The average value measured during the campaign using MAAP was 0.09 Mm−1 (at wavelength of 637 nm). When data were averaged for > 1 h, an agreement of around 20 % was obtained between instruments. COSMOS measured systematically the lowest absorption coefficient values, which was expected due to the sample pre-treatment in COSMOS inlet. PSAP showed the best linear correlation with MAAP (R2 = 0.85), followed by AE33 and COSMOS (R2 = 0.84). The noisy data from AE31 resulted in a slightly lower, yet a significant, correlation with MAAP (R2 = 0.46). In contrast to the filter-based techniques, the sensitivity of the indirect EMS method to measure aerosol absorption was not adequate at such low concentrations levels. An absorption coefficient on the order of > 1 Mm−1 was estimated as the lowest limit, to reliably distinguish the signal from the noise. Throughout the campaign the aerosol was highly scattering with an average single-scattering albedo of 0.97. Two different air-mass origins could be identified: the north-east and from the north-west. The north-eastern air masses contained higher fraction of thickly coated light absorbing particles than the westerly air masses. Aerosol scattering, absorption and the particle coating thickness increased on the last ten days of the campaign during the north-eastern air flow. The simultaneous changes in aerosol source region, mixing state, concentration and particle optical size were reflected in the instruments' response in a complex way. The observed decrease in aerosol size suggested additional activation of secondary particle formation mechanisms. The results demonstrate the challenges encountered in the Arctic absorbing aerosol measurements. The applicability and uncertainties of different techniques are discussed and new knowledge on the absorbing aerosol characteristics in summer Arctic air masses reference to the source region is provided.

Anthropogenic activities on the Indo-Gangetic Plain emit vast amounts of light-absorbing particles (LAP) into the atmosphere, modifying the atmospheric radiation scheme. With transport to the nearby Himalayan mountains and deposition to its surfaces the particles contribute to glacier and snowmelt via darkening of the highly reflective snow. The Central Himalayas have been identified as a region where LAP are especially pronounced in glacier snow, but still remain a region where measurements of LAP in the snow are scarce. Here we study the deposition of LAP in five snow pits sampled in 2016 (and one from 2015) from two glaciers in the Sunderdhunga valley, state of Uttarakhand, India, Central Himalaya. The snow pits display a distinct melt layer interleaved by younger snow above, and older snow below. The LAP exhibit a large vertical distribution in these different snow layers. For the analyzed elemental carbon (EC), the younger snow layers in the different pits show similarities, and can be characterized by a deposition constant of about 50 µg m−2 mm−1 while the old snow layers also indicate similar values, and can be described with deposition constant of roughly 150 µg m−2 mm−1. The melt layer, contrarily, display no similar trends between the pits. Instead, it is characterized by very high amounts of LAP, and differ in orders of magnitude for concentration between the pits. The melt layer is likely a result of strong melting that took place during the summers of 2015 and 2016. The mineral dust fractional absorption is slightly below 50 % for the young and old snow layer, whereas in the melt layer is the dominating light absorbing constituent, thus, highlighting the importance of dust in the region. Our results indicate the problems with complex topography in the Himalaya, but nonetheless, can be useful in large-scale assessments of LAP in Himalayan snow.

The role of polar regions increases in terms of megatrends such as globalization, new transport routes, demography and use of natural resources consequent effects of regional and transported pollutant concentrations. We set up the ERA-PLANET Strand 4 project iCUPE – integrative and Comprehensive Understanding on Polar Environments to provide novel insights and observational data on global grand challenges with an Arctic focus. We utilize an integrated approach combining in situ observations, satellite remote sensing Earth Observations (EO) and multi-scale modeling to synthesize data from comprehensive long-term measurements, intensive campaigns and satellites to deliver data products, metrics and indicators to the stakeholders concerning the environmental status, availability and extraction of natural resources in the polar areas. The iCUPE work consists of thematic state-of-the-art research and provision of novel data in atmospheric pollution, local sources and transboundary transport, characterization of arctic surfaces and their changes, assessment of concentrations and impacts of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants and their cycling, quantification of emissions from natural resource extraction and validation and optimization of satellite Earth Observation (EO) data streams. In this paper we introduce the iCUPE project and summarize initial results arising out of integration of comprehensive in situ observations, satellite remote sensing and multiscale modeling in the Arctic context.

Aerosol particles are essential constituents of the Earth’s atmosphere, impacting the earth radiation balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. In contrast to most greenhouse gases, aerosol particles have short atmospheric residence time resulting in a highly heterogeneous distribution in space and time. There is a clear need to document this variability at regional scale through observations involving, in particular, the in-situ near-surface segment of the atmospheric observations system. This paper will provide the widest effort so far to document variability of climate-relevant in-situ aerosol properties (namely wavelength dependent particle light scattering and absorption coefficients, particle number concentration and particle number size distribution) from all sites connected to the Global Atmosphere Watch network. High quality data from more than 90 stations worldwide have been collected and controlled for quality and are reported for a reference year in 2017, providing a very extended and robust view of the variability of these variables worldwide. The range of variability observed worldwide for light scattering and absorption coefficients, single scattering albedo and particle number concentration are presented together with preliminary information on their long-term trends and comparison with model simulation for the different stations. The scope of the present paper is also to provide the necessary suite of information including data provision procedures, quality control and analysis, data policy and usage of the ground-based aerosol measurements network. It delivers to users of the World Data Centre on Aerosol, the required confidence in data products in the form of a fully-characterized value chain, including uncertainty estimation and requirements for contributing to the global climate monitoring system.

An air pollutant proxy is a mathematical model that estimates an unobserved air pollutant using other measured variables. The proxy is advantageous to fill missing data in a research campaign or to substitute a real measurement for minimising the cost as well as the operators involved (i.e., virtual sensor). The particulate matters less than 10 μm sizes (PM10) were measured at a highly polluted urban environment of Delhi, and simultaneously at a downwind semi-urban site, Gual Pahari, in the north-west Indo-Gangetic Basin (IGB). The measurements were conducted during January–December 2008 to compare and contrast aerosol emissions, compositions and related optical and radiative properties for two different environments. While the total PM10 was about 30% lower at Gual Pahari as compared to Delhi, the total mass of water-soluble inorganic species (WSIs) was significantly enhanced (~23%) at Gual Pahari. Amongst WSIs, the major secondary inorganic species (SIs) were about 52% higher at Gual Pahari as compared to Delhi, with elevated levels in the post-monsoon/winter seasons. In contrast, the major crustal species were about 76% higher at Delhi as compared to Gual Pahari, with elevated levels in the summer/monsoon seasons. This indicates a strong inter-seasonal spatial variability in aerosol sources and compositions at these sites. Further, the simulations using aerosol optical model had resulted mean absorption coefficient (babs) and single scattering albedo (SSA) higher by about 50% and lower by about 18%, respectively, at Delhi (babs, 147 ± 63 M m−1 and SSA, 0.65 ± 0.12) as compared to Gual Pahari (babs, 73 ± 26 M m−1 and SSA, 0.79 ± 0.07). This reveals relative abundance of absorbing particles at Delhi compared to Gual Pahari. As a result, the estimated mean atmospheric forcing was 91 ± 23 W m−2 at Delhi, which was ~55% higher as compared to Gual Pahari. This is further corroborated with observed higher heating rate at Delhi (2.5 ± 0.7 K day−1) as compared to Gual Pahari (1.1 ± 0.4 K day−1). Our results highlight that diverse near-surface emissions together with atmospheric processing leads to strong inter-seasonal spatial heterogeneity in aerosol chemical, optical and radiative properties between the adjacent distinct sites. This has an important implication for a city-scale air pollution modeling.

Light-absorbing impurities (LAI) have the potential to substantially affect snow albedo, with subsequent changes on snow melt and impact on climate. To more accurately quantify the snow albedo, the contribution from different LAI needs to be assessed. Here we estimate the main LAI components, elemental carbon (EC) (as a proxy for black carbon) and mineral dust in snow from Indian Himalaya and compared it to snow samples from Arctic Finland. The impurities are collected onto quartz filters and are analyzed thermal-optically for EC, as well as with an additional optical measurement to estimate the light-absorption of dust separately on the filters. Laboratory tests were conducted using substrates containing soot and mineral particles specially prepared to test the experimental setup. Analyzed ambient snow samples show EC concentrations that are in the same range as presented by previous research, for each respective region. In terms of the mass absorption cross section (MAC) our ambient EC had surprisingly about half of the MAC value compared to our laboratory standard EC (chimney soot), suggesting a less light absorptive EC in the snow, which has consequences for the snow albedo reduction caused by EC. In the Himalayan samples, larger contributions by dust (in the range of 50 % or greater for the light absorption caused by the LAI) highlighted the importance of dust acting as a light absorber in the snow. Moreover, EC concentrations in the Indian samples, acquired from a 120 cm deep snow pit (covering possibly the last five years of snow fall), suggest an increase in both EC and dust, while at the same time there is a tendency for a reduction in the MAC value with snow depth. This work emphasizes the complexity in determining the snow albedo, showing that LAI concentrations alone might not be sufficient, but additional transient effects on the light-absorbing properties of the EC need to be considered and studied in the snow. Equally imperative is to confirm the spatial and temporal representativeness of these data by comparing data from several and longer pits explored at the same time.

We investigated the temporal variation of PM and aerosol particle number concentration (TC, D_p 0.25-32 µm) during year 2012 in Jeddah city. We focused on the daily patterns, wind sector analysis, and the effect of ambient conditions. The daily median values of the PM_(10) rarely exceeded 200 µg/m^3. The PM_(2.5) and PM_1 concentrations showed similar temporal variation with fraction of 39.5% and 19.3% of the PM_(10), respectively. The daily median values of the TC were generally below 500 cm^(-3) but showed three distinguished peaks (as high as 950 cm^(-3)) occurred during late September-early November, which was during the time of the Hajj season. These peaks were also observable in the PM_(2.5) and PM_1. The PM_(10) daily pattern on workdays and Thursdays were similar with a pronounced peak as high as 90 µg/m^3 during the morning time. The PM_(2.5) and PM_1 daily patterns were also similar to those of the PM_(10), especially on Thursdays and workdays, but with lower concentrations. The TC daily pattern was almost the same on all days showing high concentrations (between 150 and 200 cm^(-3)) during the first half of the day. The daily patterns of the TC were similar to those of the PM_1, especially on Workdays and Fridays. The emissions from the industrial city (located in the south of Jeddah) are the main source of PM in Jeddah. During the sea breeze that occurred in the afternoon accompanied low concentrations of PM and TC concentrations. The PM concentrations showed the famous U-shape with respect to the wind speed, whereas the TC was around 150 cm^(-3) when the wind speed was over 3 m/s. In general, the TC had a different behaviour with respect to the other ambient conditions than that of the PM concentrations, especially PM_(10).

Ground level ozone (O3) plays an important role in controlling the oxidation budget in the boundary layer and thus affects the environment and causes severe health disorders. Ozone gas, being one of the well-known greenhouse gases, although present in small quantities, contributes to global warming. In this study, we present a predictive model for the steady-state ozone concentrations during daytime (13:00&ndash, 17:00) and nighttime (01:00&ndash, 05:00) at an urban coastal site. The model is based on a modified approach of the null cycle of O3 and NOx and was evaluated against a one-year data-base of O3 and nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) measured at an urban coastal site in Jeddah, on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. The model for daytime concentrations was found to be linearly dependent on the concentration ratio of NO2 to NO whereas that for the nighttime period was suggested to be inversely proportional to NO2 concentrations. Knowing that reactions involved in tropospheric O3 formation are very complex, this proposed model provides reasonable predictions for the daytime and nighttime concentrations. Since the current description of the model is solely based on the null cycle of O3 and NOx, other precursors could be considered in future development of this model. This study will serve as basis for future studies that might introduce informing strategies to control ground level O3 concentrations, as well as its precursors&rsquo, emissions.

A smoke plume originating from the massive wildfires near Moscow was clearly detected in northern Finland on 30 July 2010. Measurements made with remote sensing instruments demonstrated how the biomass burning aerosols affected the chemical and optical characteristics of the atmosphere in regions hundreds of kilometers away from the actual fires. In this study, we used MODIS, AIRS, CALIOP, PFR, ceilometers, FTS and Brewer data to quantify the properties of the transported smoke plume. In addition, in situ measurements of aerosol concentration (DMPS), absorption (aethalometer) and scattering (nephelometer) are presented. We found that due to the smoke plume in northern Finland, the daily averaged optical thickness of aerosols increased fourfold, and MODIS retrieved AOD as high as 4.5 for the thickest part of the plume. FTS measurements showed that CO concentration increased by 100% during the plume. CALIOP and ceilometer measurements revealed that the smoke plume was located close to the surface, below 3 km, and that the plume was not homogeneously mixed. In addition, in situ measurements showed that the scattering and absorption coefficients were almost 20 times larger in the smoke plume than on average, and that the number of particles larger than 320 nm increased 14-fold. Moreover, a comparison with in situ measurements recorded in eastern Finland on the previous day showed that the transport from eastern to northern Finland decreased the scattering coefficient, black carbon concentration, and total number concentration 0.5%/h, 1.5%/h and 2.0%/h, respectively.

The genetic and audiological data support the hypothesis that the p.M34T is a pathogenic mutation in the Finnish population. The p.M34T mutation displays an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and is associated with mild to moderate nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI) in the homozygous state. The audiograms often display a hearing impairment notch at 2-4 kHz in young patients, which may aid in the early diagnosis.The aim of the study was to assess whether the p.M34T mutation in the GJB2 gene may associate with nonsyndromic SNHI.We systematically reviewed the families with children diagnosed with nonsyndromic SNHI caused by a homozygous p.M34T mutation at the Kuopio and Oulu University Hospital Clinics. The children were re-examined and audiological and genetic data were obtained from their parents and healthy siblings to study genotype-phenotype correlation.We describe 11 patients from 6 families including 5 sibling pairs from 6 to 23 years of age with homozygous p.M34T genotype all having mild nonsyndromic SNHI. In addition, we found three patients with compound p.M34T mutation also exhibiting mild to moderate SNHI.

Objective The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and etiology of congenital or early acquired bilateral sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI) in children born from 1988 to 2002 in the district of Kuopio University Hospital, Finland, and to compare the results with those from an earlier 14-year period in the same region and similar population. Methods The data were collected retrospectively from Hospital Records. The degree of hearing impairment was based on average air conduction threshold calculated over the frequencies 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz in the better hearing ear. Hearing impairment was classified as mild (≥20–39 dB), moderate (40–69 dB), severe (70–95 dB) and profound (>95 dB). Results We identified 92 children with bilateral SNHI diagnosed before the age of 7 years. The overall prevalence and the prevalence for at least moderate SNHI was 2.1 per 1000 live births and 1.2 per 1000 live births, respectively. We found no differences in the prevalence of SNHI during both study periods. Etiology was genetic in 46%, acquired in 14% and unknown in 40%. Out of the genetic cases 74% were non-syndromic and 26% were syndromic. In comparison to the previous study there was a decline in the proportion of acquired SNHI and the proportion of genetic and unknown cause had increased. Six children in five families had homozygous 35delG mutation and six children in four families presented with a homozygous M34T mutation. Conclusions The prevalence of congenital or early acquired SNHI in the Kuopio University Hospital district area has not changed during a period of 29 years. Despite possibility to test the GBJ2 gene, the proportion of hearing impairment of unknown etiology remained high.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess clinical and neurophysiological changes after 6 mos of transcutaneous electrical stimulation in patients with unresolved facial nerve paralysis. Design: A pilot case series of 10 consecutive patients with chronic facial nerve paralysis either of idiopathic origin or because of herpes zoster oticus participated in this open study. All patients received below sensory threshold transcutaneous electrical stimulation for 6 mos for their facial nerve paralysis. The intervention consisted of gradually increasing the duration of electrical stimulation of three sites on the affected area for up to 6 hrs/day. Assessments of the facial nerve function were performed using the House-Brackmann clinical scale and neurophysiological measurements of compound motor action potential distal latencies on the affected and nonaffected sides. Patients were tested before and after the intervention. Results: A significant improvement was observed in the facial nerve upper branch compound motor action potential distal latency on the affected side in all patients. An improvement of one grade in House-Brackmann scale was observed and some patients also reported subjective improvement. Conclusions: Transcutaneous electrical stimulation treatment may have a positive effect on unresolved facial nerve paralysis. This study illustrates a possibly effective treatment option for patients with the chronic facial paresis with no other expectations of recovery.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are used to determine the spinal cord and brain function during surgical procedures. In general, SEPs are sensitive to volatile anesthetics, but little is known about the effects of anesthesia maintenance with sevoflurane on SEPs in children. Analgesics are often provided during anesthesia, and supplementary drugs may also affect the SEPs. In this prospective clinical trial of 27 healthy, 3- to 8-yr-old children, we evaluated the effects of sevoflurane anesthesia after IV induction with benzodiazepine and barbiturate on median nerve SEP. In addition, the effects of two analgesics (ketoprofen and fentanyl) on SEPs were evaluated.Median nerve SEPs were recorded before premedication with midazolam 0.1 mg/kg IV, and at three separate times during anesthesia maintenance with sevoflurane 2% end-tidal concentration in air/oxygen (after 15 min of sevoflurane inhalation), supplemented with/without ketoprofen 1 mg/kg (after 25 min) and fentanyl 1 microg/kg (after 35 min).Compared with baseline measurements, an increase both in N20 latency (P = 0.015) and in central conduction time (P = 0.001) was noted during anesthesia maintenance with sevoflurane. The administration of analgesics did not have an influence on the N20 latency or central conduction time. In children 5 to 8 yr of age, the mean cortical N20-P25 amplitude was decreased (P = 0.008). In addition, in older children, the N20-P25 amplitude decreased after the co-administration of ketoprofen and fentanyl compared with the values measured before the analgesics (P = 0.03). These decreases were not seen in the younger children.In children, anesthesia maintenance with 2% sevoflurane prolongs median SEP latencies in a manner that is similar to those reported for other volatile anesthetics. However, SEP monitoring can be done with sevoflurane inhalation, but the dosage should be adjusted due to interindividual variability. Co-administration of ketoprofen, and fentanyl did not affect the SEP latencies, but post hoc analysis suggested that older children had a decrease in cortical amplitudes.

The suspicion of a hearing defect is nowadays raised during auditory screening, which is performed on all newborn immediately after birth. Final diagnosis requires several examination visits, during which clinical examinations are combined with electrical examinations of auditory responses. Auditory rehabilitation is executed with hearing aids applied in both ears. If conventional auditory rehabilitation with hearing aids does not ensure sufficient hearing for the development of speech, the child can be provided with a cochlear implant. Children with a hearing defect should regularly be monitored. A multiprofessional team participates in the rehabilitation.

We investigated size-resolved submicrometre aerosol particle number and volume concentration time series as well as aerosol dynamic parameters derived from Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (DMPS) measurements at five background stations in the Nordic boreal forest area. The stations in question were Aspvreten, Hyytiala and Uto in southern Finland and Sweden, and Varrio and Pallas in the Finnish Lapland. The objective of our investigation was to identify and quantify annual and interannual variation observable in the time series. We found that the total number and mass concentrations were much lower at the Lapland stations than at the southern stations and that the total particle number was strongly correlated to particle formation event frequency. The annual total number concentration followed the annual distribution of particle formation events at the southern stations but much less clearly at the Lapland stations. The volume concentration was highest during summer, in line with higher condensation growth rates; this is in line with the assumption that a large part of the particle volume is produced by oxidized plant emissions. The decrease of sulphate emissions in Europe was not visible in our data set. Aerosol dynamic parameters such as condensation sink, condensation sink diameter and the power law exponent linking coagulation losses and condensation sink are presented to characterize the submicron Nordic background aerosol. Currently, only the mass of sub 2.5 μm and sub 10 μm particles (PM2.5, PM10) in ambient air is regulated and monitored closely, but the same increase in PM2.5 can cause different degrees of health effects in different cities (sometimes more harmful effects per unit mass in less polluted cities) (Li et al., 2019). In addition to mass concentration, other measurement metrics are needed to connect particle pollution data and health effects. In our measurements made in traffic-influenced environments in Helsinki, Finland (a relatively clean city), and Delhi-National Capital Region (Delhi-NCR), India (a polluted area), we noted a large difference in the median particle size for lung-deposited surface area (LDSA). In Helsinki, the median size was 80 nm, corresponding to soot particles emitted from diesel engines. However, the median size increased to 190 nm during a long-range transport event of air mass. In Delhi-NCR, surprisingly, the median size was even larger, 410 nm. These larger particles were likely to originate from regional sources rather than local traffic. The LDSA to PM2.5 ratio for particles in Helsinki was 2–4 times the amount in Delhi-NCR, potentially linked with the higher toxicity of a unit of particulate mass in Helsinki. publishedVersion
