Abstract

Resumo Os fibroelastomas são o segundo tumor cardíaco benigno mais comum. São estruturas pequenas, avasculares, com uma dimensão média de 9mm, podendo atingir até 70mm, habitualmente aderentes à superfície das válvulas cardíacas (válvulas aórtica e mitral são as mais comumente afetadas, seguidas das válvulas tricúspide e pulmonar). A etiologia não é clara, sendo a hipótese de formação de microtrombos nas margens de coaptação das válvulas a mais aceite. Na ecocardiografia apresentam aspeto pediculado, móvel, com superfície filamentosa, tipicamente com uma aparência pontilhada nas margens e ecolucente. Do ponto de vista clínico, podem estar associados a fenómenos embólicos, no entanto, na maioria dos casos o diagnóstico é incidental. Apresentamos de seguida quatro casos de diagnóstico incidental de fibroelastomas nas quatro válvulas cardíacas, diagnosticados por ecocardiograma transtorácico (ETT) (Vídeo 1; Figura 1). Abstract

Systems approaches for the study of immune signaling pathways have been traditionally based on purified cells or cultured lines. However, in vivo responses involve the coordinated action of multiple cell types, which interact to establish an inflammatory microenvironment. We employed standardized whole-blood stimulation systems to test the hypothesis that responses to Toll-like receptor ligands or whole microbes can be defined by the transcriptional signatures of key cytokines. We found 44 genes, identified using Support Vector Machine learning, that captured the diversity of complex innate immune responses with improved segregation between distinct stimuli. Furthermore, we used donor variability to identify shared inter-cellular pathways and trace cytokine loops involved in gene expression. This provides strategies for dimension reduction of large datasets and deconvolution of innate immune responses applicable for characterizing immunomodulatory molecules. Moreover, we provide an interactive R-Shiny application with healthy donor reference values for induced inflammatory genes.

Abstract

Segundo Canem e Williamson (1998), o planejamento do layout é importante, pois normalmente representa os maiores e mais caros recursos da organização. Além disso, a localização e disposição física dos equipamentos no chão de fábrica têm impacto em diversos fatores como nível de estoque em processo, tamanho dos lotes de transferência, dificuldade no gerenciamento das atividades, movimentação de pessoas e produtos, entre outros. Portanto, o estudo de conceitos de arranjo físico e o desenvolvimento de modelos de projeto do layout, que visem a otimização dos recursos de produção, são de vital importância na busca pela melhoria dos sistemas produtivos. Neste contexto, este artigo apresenta um novo modelo de projeto de layout, para ambientes job shop com ampla variedade de peças. O modelo foi desenvolvido durante uma pesquisa de doutorado e foi aplicado em algumas empresas do setor metal mecânico. Os resultados obtidos comprovaram a eficiência do modelo projetado. O objetivo do modelo consiste em conduzir a equipe de projeto de layout a desenvolver alternativas de arranjo físico que estejam em consonância com conceitos e princípios da filosofia de produção enxuta. Vale ressaltar novamente que o modelo foi desenvolvido para ambientes com alta variedade de peças, ambientes esses em que, devido à dificuldade em se projetar o arranjo físico, as empresas terminam por adotar o layout funcional, conceito esse de arranjo físico que apresenta sérios problemas como excesso de transporte, altos níveis de estoques em processo, etc.According to Canem and Williamson (1998), layout planning is important because it usually represents the largest and most expensive resources for an organization. Moreover, the equipment location on the factory floor has an impact on several factors such as level of in-process inventory, transfer batch sizes, difficulty in managing activities, and moving people and products, among others. Therefore, the study of layout concepts and the development of a layout design that aims at optimizing production are of crucial importance for production system improvement. Thus, this study presents a new layout design model of job shop environments with a high variety of parts. The model was developed as part of a PhD research project and was applied in some companies in the metal-mechanic sector. The results obtained showed the efficiency of the model developed. The purpose of the model is to lead the project team to develop layout alternatives that are consistent with the principles and concepts of lean production. It is worth mentioning again that the model was developed for environments with high variety of parts, and due to the difficulty in designing the layout in these environments, companies end up adopting the functional layout, a concept that presents serious problems such as excessive transport, high levels of in-process inventories, etc.

Abstract

A produção enxuta tem provocado mudanças significativas nas empresas, mudanças estas que não vêm sendo acompanhadas pelos sistemas de gestão econômica, desenvolvidos sobre pressupostos equivocados da produção em massa que defendem que as otimizações locais isoladas resultam na otimização global da empresa. Deste modo, pode-se afirmar que a contabilidade de custos não é capaz de prover as informações necessárias à correta tomada de decisão nas empresas enxutas. Por outro lado, constata-se uma coerência entre os princípios da produção enxuta e os pressupostos que sustentam a contabilidade de ganhos da Teoria das Restrições. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar argumentos que respaldem estas afirmações, bem como justifiquem a necessidade da utilização da contabilidade de ganhos como base teórica para a proposta de um método de gestão econômica para a produção enxuta.Lean production has provoked significant changes in companies. These changes have not being followed by the economic management systems, which are developed based on mistaken assumptions made by mass production which argues that isolated local optimizations can lead to the global optimization of the company. In this way, it can be affirmed that cost accounting cannot provide the necessary information for decision making in lean companies. On the other hand, consistency is evidenced between the principles of the lean production and the assumptions that support the throughput accounting of the Theory of Constraints. Therefore, the objective of this article is to present arguments that corroborate these assertions and justify the necessity for the use of the throughput accounting as a theoretical basis for the proposal of an economic management method for lean production.

Há uma aparente carência de pesquisas sobre os inter-relacionamentos entre critérios de alocação de capacidades de recursos de manufatura e os métodos de controle de produção. Estudos sobre alocação de capacidades se baseiam geralmente em sistemas simplificados de empurrar a produção, desconsiderando sistemas mais atuais de gestão de produção. Por outro lado, pesquisas sobre a aplicabilidade de sistemas de gestão da produção não consideram apropriada a maneira como as capacidades produtivas dos recursos estão alocadas ao longo da linha. Analisar as interdependências entre esses dois grandes ramos de pesquisa é o objetivo deste artigo.There is a lack of researches on the relationship between methods of capacity allocation of manufacturing resources and production planning and control systems. Studies about capacity allocation are based on simplified push production systems not considering more current production management systems. By other side, studies about efficiency of production management systems don't consider the effect of different criteria of capacity allocation of manufacturing resources at the results. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the different policies of capacity allocation and different production planning and control systems interrelate between each other.

Abstract

Abstract In this work, we present a simple method to obtain time average occupation of quantum systems with time-independent Hamiltonian. Our method is fast and can be used for system with large Hilbert space. The average occupation can give insights and help finding the best parameter to be used in experiments or for a more complex simulation using time-depended Hamiltonian and density matrix. As an example of application, we use this method to find the best parameters to send a laser to excite a two-level system coupled to cavity mode to a final state.

17. Política Nacional de Saúde Integral LGBT e sua instrumentalização na atenção primária do SUS: uma revisão sistemática

Abstract

Com o objetivo de revisar como têm sido experienciadas as ofertas de ações em saúde à população LGBTQIA+, na Atenção Primária à Saúde, considerando a PNSI LGBT, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática bibliográfica nas plataformas SciELO Brasil e LILACS, além disso, foram utilizadas a Constituição Federal do Brasil de 1988, a PNSI LGBT, a PNAB e suas respectivas portarias. Como resultado da pesquisa, foram selecionados 23 artigos para a meta-análise, que relatavam as experiências dos usuários LGBTQIA+ e dos profissionais da Atenção Primária do SUS (APS). Verificou-se que a percepção dos mesmos se volta, principalmente, à contemplação de dois dos objetivos da PNSI LGBT. Apesar da limitação do número de estudos encontrados sobre a temática, concluiu-se que os artigos analisados pela presente pesquisa apontaram que a APS, cuja finalidade é o acolhimento e cuidado integral dos usuários dos serviços de saúde, independente de orientação sexual e identidade de gênero, tem se exteriorizado como uma esfera hostil devido às ações discriminatórias, à invisibilização e à negligência à saúde dessa população. Por isso, foram propostas formas de identificar, advertir e reduzir essas ações.

19. Racial Inequality in the Twenty-first Century: A Comparative Analysis between Brazil and the United States

Abstract

This article presents a set of comparative data related to racial inequality in the United States and Brazil throughout the twenty-first century. Within the limitations of available data, we highlight four limited but important dimensions, that is, demography, education, the labor market, and earnings that illustrate racial inequality in both countries. In doing so, we aim to investigate and critically update Andrews’s work (1992) on the last three decades with available data. Despite some improvements in absolute terms related to racial inequities, we show that in both Brazil and the United States, economic growth periods do not necessarily mean that income among blacks is catching up with that of whites. Similarly, in both countries, economic crisis and recovery phases are experienced differently depending on the individual’s race. JEL Classification: D31, D63, J7, J15

Abstract

A expansão da população, atrelada à elevação dos níveis de produção e consumo de bens, vem intensificando a geração de resíduos sólidos em áreas urbanas. Estima-se que no Brasil são gerados anualmente 2 milhões de toneladas de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE). Se não for tratado adequadamente, essa categoria de resíduos pode causar impactos negativos ao meio ambiente em razão do potencial de contaminação. Os depósitos de REEE localizados nas áreas urbanas são conhecidos também como minas urbanas, uma vez que os REEE apresentam uma quantidade expressiva de matérias-primas críticas e metais valiosos. Aliado à Política Nacional de Gestão de Resíduos Sólidos (PNRS), o presente trabalho apresenta uma discussão sobre os desafios para o funcionamento eficiente das cooperativas de reciclagem de REEE, as quais também podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento da mineração urbana como uma maneira de auxiliar na mitigação do impacto negativo da crescente geração destes tipos de resíduos e gerar renda.

Abstract

Resin tapping is an activity designed to extract resin from trees, especially species of the genus Pinus. Current systems of tapping and collecting resin are well known, but further study is needed to make these systems more efficient and profitable for producers. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the effect of five resin tapping systems during five different collection periods on the production and growth of resin trees for a population of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii planted in Itapetininga, SP. Resining affects tree growth, especially in diameter. Results showed that system 4, with eight panels on each plant and four on each side, presented the highest average production of resin per tree, while system 1, with 2 panels on each plant and 1 on each side, presented the lowest average resin production per tree. It was concluded that resin production is dependent on the system employed, time of collection, and their interactions.

Existem várias formas de avaliar o desempenho escolar, o Programa Internacional de Avaliação de Alunos (PISA) é umas das mais conhecidas. Entretanto, quando se discute avaliação, desempenho e resultados algumas questões sempre surgem: será a forma de avaliar justa? Os resultados buscam somente o desempenho quantitativo? O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o desempenho dos alunos brasileiros no último exame do PISA, discutindo a teoria do conhecimento poderoso de Young como possível solução para o desempenho abaixo da média dos estudantes brasileiros. Metodologia: a técnica adotada para a coleta de dados foi a análise documental. Conclusão: a teoria do conhecimento poderoso de Young, apresentou pontos que problematizam algumas questões inerentes ao fraco desempenho acadêmico dos estudantes brasileiros, com ênfase a inserção de um currículo que utilize como base o conhecimento especializado.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os achados de uma pesquisa matriz denominada “Pandemia e educação: narrativas de estudantes do ensino superior público do Estado de Alagoas, Brasil” que, no ano de 2020, problematizou: qual a situação dos/as estudantes em termos de acesso à Internet e aos equipamentos disponíveis para a participação de aulas on-line durante a fase mais aguda da Covid-19? A partir da abordagem quantiqualitativa, e na tentativa de “responder” essa problemática, utilizamos como fontes questionários e sessões conversa on-line com estudantes dos cursos de licenciatura em Pedagogia e de bacharelado em Jornalismo do Campus Maceió, da Universidade Federal de Alagoas. Nesse percurso, caracterizamos os sujeitos estudantes como praticantespensantes, heróis anônimos, que reinventaram novas maneiras de fazer e de estudar, nos âmbitos pessoal, doméstico e acadêmico. As narrativas demonstraram a preexistência do vírus da desigualdade nos contextos socioeconômicos e digitais dos/as estudantes dos cursos investigados antes do estado pandêmico, que foram desvelados durante a tragédia provocada pela Covid-19, na história presente (2020-2021). Abstract

BackgroundEchocardiographic markers associated with asymptomatic acute cellular rejection (ACR) in patients with orthotopic heart transplant (HT) are still under investigation. The aim of our study was to determine clinical and myocardial strain imaging (MSI) variables evaluated by echocardiography associated with ACR in the first year of HT. A separate analysis was performed to compare variables during the first 6 months of HT, when ACR has a prevalence in 60% of patients. Another analysis evaluated an exclusive population with Chagas disease as the cause of HT.MethodsWe prospectively studied 67 patients with less than 1 year of HT, 36 patients without ACR (41% men, age 49 ± 12 years, 52% Chagas disease as the cause of heart failure), and 31 patients with ACR (59% men, age 55 ± 8 years, 74% Chagas disease as the cause of heart failure). Conventional echocardiographic measurements and MSI by global longitudinal strain (GLS) from the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle free wall (RV-FWLS) and myocardial work (MW) from the left ventricle were obtained by experienced echocardiologists. Clinical variables, such as the presence of diabetes, hypertension, and immunosuppressant drugs, were compared between groups.ResultsHT patients with ACR were older and used more cyclosporine for immunosuppression. The positive ACR group had an increased relative wall thickness and LV mass index and similar LVGLS and RV-FWLS compared to the negative ACR group. Nevertheless, MW analysis observed increased global work efficiency (GWE) in positive ACR. Multivariate analysis identified older age, cyclosporine use, LV mass index, and GWE as independent predictors for detecting rejection. A separate analysis was performed for patients with less than 6 months of HT. Similar MSI was observed in both groups, with a trend for increased GWE in patients with ACR and significantly increased LV mass index in the ACR group. An exclusive group of Chagas patients as the primary cause of HT was analyzed, and similar MSI results for LVGLS, RV-FWLS, and MW were observed for both ACR and the no rejection groups. Additionally, the survival rates at 2 years were similar between the Chagas disease groups.ConclusionLVGLS and RV-FWLS were similar between patients with or without ACR in the first year after HT. Conversely, GWE, a derivative of LVGLS, and LV mass index were increased in positive ACR and could be markers for rejection. Increased LV mass index was also found in a subgroup analysis of patients less than 6 months after HT; however, MSI was similar regardless of ACR. For chagasic patients, rejection in the first year did not increase mortality at the 2-year follow-up, and MSI parameters were similar between patients with or without ACR. In a multivariate analysis to predict ACR, the independent parameters in this study were older age, cyclosporine use, LV mass index, and GWE.

Abstract

A factory layout is a decisive factor in the improvement of production levels, efficiency, and even in the sustainability of a company. Regardless of the type of layout to be implemented, they are typically designed to optimize the work conditions and provide high performance, reducing production losses. The wine sector encompasses a wide diversity of possible configurations of production layouts, from one-level designs with separate infrastructures in several buildings or centralized single facilities, or even subdivided into different levels or floors. The general purpose is to maximize energy efficiency and process performance while minimizing costs. Thus, an optimization model based on the organization of productive layouts is proposed, using a methodology based on a genetic algorithm. The obtained results reveal that the optimization model for winery layouts was successfully applied, providing feasible solutions to improve the production processes’ efficiency combined with the minimization of general and ergonomic risks.

Abstract

BACKGROUND There were gaps between guidelines and practice when surgery was the only treatment for aortic stenosis (AS). OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the decision to intervene in patients with severe AS in the EORP VHD (EURObservational Research Programme Valvular Heart Disease) II survey. METHODS Among 2,152 patients with severe AS, 1,271 patients with high-gradient AS who were symptomatic fulfilled a Class I recommendation for intervention according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology guidelines; the primary end point was the decision for intervention. RESULTS A decision not to intervene was taken in 262 patients (20.6%). In multivariate analysis, the decision not to intervene was associated with older age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.34 per 10-year increase; 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.61; P = 0.002), New York Heart Association functional classes I and II versus III (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.30; P = 0.005), higher age adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (OR: 1.09 per 1-point increase; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.17; P = 0.03), and a lower transaortic mean gradient (OR: 0.81 per 10-mm Hg decrease; 95% CI: 0.71 to 0.92; P < 0.001). During the study period, 346 patients (40.2%, median age 84 years, median EuroSCORE II [European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II] 3.1%) underwent transcatheter intervention and 515 (59.8%, median age 69 years, median EuroSCORE II 1.5%) underwent surgery. A decision not to intervene versus intervention was associated with lower 6-month survival (87.4%; 95% CI: 82.0 to 91.3 vs 94.6%; 95% CI: 92.8 to 95.9; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A decision not to intervene was taken in 1 in 5 patients with severe symptomatic AS despite a Class I recommendation for intervention and the decision was particularly associated with older age and combined comorbidities. Abstract

In the wine industry, task planning is based on decision-making processes that are influenced by technical and organizational constraints as well as regulatory limitations. A characteristic constraint inherent to this sector concerns occupational risks, in which companies must reduce and mitigate work-related accidents, resulting in lower operating costs and a gain in human, financial, and material efficiency. This work proposes a task scheduling optimization model using a methodology based on the ant colony optimization approach to mitigate the ergonomic risks identified in general winery production processes by estimating the metabolic energy expenditure during the execution of tasks. The results show that the tasks were reorganized according to their degree of ergonomic risk, preserving an acceptable priority sequence of tasks with operational affinity and satisfactory efficiency from the point of view of the operationalization of processes, while the potential ergonomic risks are simultaneously minimized by the rotation and alternation of operative teams between those tasks with higher and lower values of metabolic energy required. We also verified that tasks with lower ergonomic-load requirements influence the reorganization of the task sequence by lowering the overall value of metabolic energy, which is reflected in the reduction of the ergonomic load.

Abstract

Sports cardiology is an evolving field in cardiology, with several topics remaining controversial. Beyond the several well-known benefits of regular exercise practice, the occurrence of adverse clinical events during sports in apparently healthy individuals, especially sudden cardiac death, and the described long-term adverse cardiac adaptations associated to high volume of exercise, remain challenging. The early identification of athletes with increased risk is critical, but the most appropriate preparticipation screening protocols are also debatable and a more personalized evaluation, considering individual and sports-related characteristics, will potentially optimize this evaluation. As the risk of major clinical events during sports is not zero, independently of previous evaluation, ensuring the capacity for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, especially with availability of automated external defibrillators, in sports arenas, is crucial for its prevention and to improve outcomes. As in other areas of medicine, application of new digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, is promising and could improve in near future several aspects of sports cardiology. This paper aims to review the methodology of athletes’ preparticipation screening, emphasizing current controversies and future challenges, in order to improve early diagnosis of conditions associated with sudden cardiac death.

Abstract

Nonlinear system identification concerns the determination of the model structure and its parameters. Although the designers often seek the best model for each system, it can be tricky to determine, at the same time, the best structure and the parameters which optimize the model performance. This paper proposes the use of a Genetic Algorithm, GA, and the Leven berg-Marquardt, LM, method to obtain the model parameters, as well as perform the order reduction of the model. In order to validate the proposed methodology, the identification of a magnetic levitator, operating in closed loop, was performed. The class NARX-OBF, Nonlinear Auto Regressive with eXogenous input-Orthonormal Basis Function, was used. The use of OBF functions aims to reduce the number of terms in NARX models. Once the model is found, the order reduction is performed using GA and LM, in a hybrid application, capable of determining the model parameters and re ducing the original model order, simultaneously. The results show, consid ering the inherent trade-of between accuracy and computational effort, the proposed methodology provided an implementation with good mean square error, when compared with the full NARX-OBF model.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 Trichinella spiralis causes severe infections in humans, resulting in various clinical symptoms and even death, in several countries worldwide. Human trichinellosis has been reported in 55 countries, and mainly affects certain ethnic groups and tourists. It is caused by the ingestion of raw, undercooked meat or pork, or their by-products containing parasitic larvae. Infections in swine especially occur due to the parasitic contamination of flood containing animal products, predation by rodents and other animals infected with T. spiralis, and due to the frequent habit of cannibalism in intensive production systems. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of T. spiralis in pig carcasses from a slaughterhouse located in the midwestern region of Paraná State, Brazil. Pools of 100 g of diaphragm, containing at least 1 g of tissue from each test animal, were collected, ground, and subjected to acid digestion with pepsin (1:10,000) and 25% hydrochloric acid. Sampling was performed in accordance to the methodology recommended by the European Union. All the 735, 902 samples collected between 2010 and 2013, and in 2018, were negative for Trichinella spp. larvae. The pigs came from 483 farms from 90 municipalities from the three states of southern Brazil (Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul). The absence of the parasite in different animal species, reported by surveys conducted in Brazil, could confirm the country as free from trichinellosis. Although T. spiralis is not endemic to Brazil, it is necessary to subject the meat of adult pigs slaughtered here and exported to other countries to inspections and parasitological examinations. It is therefore necessary to continually inspect pig carcasses for T. spiralis in slaughterhouses worldwide. Reuse and recirculation of products and materials are the basis of the concept of the circular economy (CE). TheCE is an innovative proposal that can result in positive impacts such as reduced demand for raw materials,reduced consumption of basic resources, and job creation, as well as preventing negative impacts resulting fromthe exploitation and processing of natural resources. Mining is infamous for its potential environmental impact,but mining waste from traditional mining (in the linear economy) may recover material through upcyclingtechniques, as can urban mining of industrial and post-consumer waste categories (in the circular economy).Urban mining, a form of closed-loop supply chain management, offers an attractive alternative to the man-agement of waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste) and, at the same time, as a sustainable way toexploit mineral resources, reduces primary material intake and stimulates the circularity in the supply chain. Thepresent study reviews the main CE solutions for e-waste management, highlighting the importance of recoveringand classifying mineral material according to urban mining procedures.

48. Clarifying closure scenarios through integrated planning at the Cerrejón mine in Colombia

Abstract

Cerrejon is an export thermal coal mine in Colombia producing 30 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and employing more than 6,000 direct employees. Operated since 1985, Cerrejon mine is a joint venture operation between Anglo American (AA), BHP and Glencore. The first Cerrejon mine closure plan (MCP) was produced in 2009, with subsequent updates in 2012 and 2016. Since 2009, the MCPs have followed the guidance of the AA Mine Closure Toolbox (MCT). In 2018, the shareholders of Cerrejon requested that the closure plan be updated for two scenarios: reversion of the lease to the State in 2033 and planned closure of the operation. Cerrejon engaged AA Group Technical and Sustainability to assist with the update of the closure plan, incorporating the Integrated Closure Planning System (ICPS) developed by AA in 2015. The ICPS process complements and enhances the MCT process, with the focus of integrating closure planning into life-of-mine (LoM) planning and, in doing so, moving from just planning to operational execution. The first step in the ICPS process involved a baseline maturity assessment during a multifunctional site-based workshop. A plan was developed to improve subprocesses of the ICPS where the current maturity condition was below the competence level. Implementation of the plan commenced in 2018. Key components of the plan include an integrated planning opportunities workshop using Kepner-Tregoe analysis to prioritise identified projects, updating the baseline closure risk assessment, redoing the gap analysis in relation to the requirements of the MCT, benchmarking options to mitigate closure risks, developing closure and success criteria, and updating the existing closure plan and associated liability with an action plan to address gaps. This paper provides detail on how utilising the ICPS process assisted in clearly defining the reversion and closure cases, and the major risks, opportunities and gaps at Cerrejon mine—adding value not only by improving the confidence in the updated closure plan and costing but also by defining a clear way forward in integrating closure planning into the remaining LoM planning.

Abstract

The topics span from animal behaviour and welfare over biotechnology to clinical veterinary medicine. Thus, the book is of interest for researchers and students working in the diverse fields of veterinary medicine and science.The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA), the Research Centre of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon, commemorated its 25th-year jubilee in 2018. Throughout its history, CIISA has been consolidating as the top-ranking Portuguese Animal and Veterinary Sciences research unit.More recently, CIISA has taken a leading role in the coordination of national and international research networks and consortiums. This conveyed a highly interdisciplinary nature to CIISA's research, encompassing animal, veterinary and biomedical sciences. This multi- and interdisciplinary nature is reflected on the broad scientific background of the team.
