Developing new cultivars, particularly in perennial species like Coffea arabica, can be a time-consuming process. Employing molecular markers in genome-wide selection (GWS) for predicting genetic values offers an alternative to accelerate this process. However, implementing GWS typically involves genotyping many markers for both training and candidate individuals, which can increase the total genotyping cost for the breeding program. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the feasibility of using low-density marker panels to predict the genetic merit of C. arabica for a range of desirable agronomic traits. For this purpose, GWS analyses were performed using the G-BLUP method with panels of varying marker densities, selected based on marker effect magnitude. The results indicate that employing lower-density panels might be advantageous for this species' improvement. Models based on these panels yielded accurate predictions for various traits and demonstrated high agreement in terms of selected individuals compared to more complex models.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) allow for inferences about the relationships between genomic variants and phenotypic traits in natural or breeding populations. However, few have used this methodology in Coffea arabica. We aimed to identify chromosomal regions with significant associations between SNP markers and agronomic traits in C. arabica. We used a coffee panel consisting of 195 plants derived from 13 families in F2 generations and backcrosses of crosses between leaf rust-susceptible and -resistant genotypes. The plants were phenotyped for 18 agronomic markers and genotyped for 21,211 SNP markers. A GWAS enabled the identification of 110 SNPs with significant associations (p < 0.05) for several agronomic traits in C. arabica: plant height, plagiotropic branch length, number of vegetative nodes, canopy diameter, fruit size, cercosporiosis incidence, and rust incidence. The effects of each SNP marker associated with the traits were analyzed, such that they can be used for molecular marker-assisted selection. For the first time, a GWAS was used for these important agronomic traits in C. arabica, enabling applications in accelerated coffee breeding through marker-assisted selection and ensuring greater efficiency and time reduction. Furthermore, our findings provide preliminary knowledge to further confirm the genomic loci and potential candidate genes contributing to various structural and disease-related traits of C. arabica.

O leitor tem em mãos a tradução de um texto escrito por Thomas H. Huxley, publicado anonimamente no Jornal Times de 26 de novembro de 1859 – apenas dois dias após o lançamento oficial do livro Origem das espécies, a que ocupou 3 colunas e ½ de letrinhas miúdas daquela edição, e que, posteriormente fora lido por Schopenhauer, tal como ele mesmo menciona para o discípulo Adam von Doß, em uma carta de 01 de março de 1860, também o ano de morte do filósofo. É após a leitura deste texto que Schopenhauer (equivocadamente, a meu ver) acusa categoricamente para Doß, que a teoria de Darwin é um mero “empirismo raso”, uma “variação da teoria de Lamarck” (GBr, 2008, p. 1587). Embora tenha sido publicado anonimamente – um costume comum na época, especialmente quando autores queriam promover positivamente com resenhas a sua própria obra perante ao público –, sabemos que a autoria é de Huxley, pois ele próprio confessara isso para seu grande amigo Charles Darwin. Primeiro Darwin lhe questionou, apenas dois dias depois da publicação do Times (28 de dezembro de 1859): “Quem poderá ser? Sem dúvida, eu diria que só existe um homem na Inglaterra que poderia ter redigido esse Ensaio, e que era você esse homem. Mas presumo que eu esteja errado e que exista algum gênio oculto de grande quilate. Pois de que modo você poderia influenciar o Jupiter Olympus [como comumente era chamado o Jornal Times] e fazê-lo conceder 3 ½ colunas à ciência pura?” (DARWIN, Correspondência de 28/12/1859, 2009, p. 279). Fora preservada uma segunda carta de Darwin para Huxley, datada de 01/01/1960 em que ele diz: “Várias pessoas me perguntaram quem escreveu aquele ‘artigo mais notável’ no Times [...] Escrevo apenas para dizer que guardarei o seu segredo” (Darwin Correspondence Project, carta 2633). A biógrafa Janet Browne (2011, p. 142) explica minuciosamente toda a história da produção do texto do Times dizendo que Hooker (outro famoso cientista amigo de Darwin) fizera um acordo com Samuel Lucas “resenhista regular do Times [...] combinando que Huxley escreveria a resenha”. Explicado todos esses detalhes históricos, acrescento apenas que todas as notas de rodapé, com exceção da que está anexada ao título (*), são da minha autoria.

No presente artigo começo fazendo considerações sobre a história das inovações de desenvolvimentos genéticos, abordando as questões relativas ao descobrimento e elucidação do DNA, sobre a influência da genética para o pensamento evolucionista, a decodificação do genoma humano, a técnica DGPI e também sobre o CRISPR-Cas9. Depois, o texto passa a ter um tom mais filosófico, donde exponho e reflito a partir da perspectiva habermasiana em Sobre o futuro da natureza humana: a caminho de uma eugenia liberal? – Nesse sentido, minhas reflexões são especialmente sobre a relação entre a estética e a eugenia e também sobre a responsabilidade moral dos indivíduos geneticamente modificados, precisamente pensados na esfera e hipótese da eugenia positiva.

Antes de qualquer coisa, o leitor do presente artigo encontrará uma grande preocupação de David Asher em transmitir o pensamento filosófico de Schopenhauer para o leitor britânico da época (1871), isso fica claro, pois esse empreendimento por vezes levou o autor a fazer citações ultra extensas de Schopenhauer (das quais ele mesmo traduzia da língua alemã para o inglês). Nessas longas citações/traduções que o autor faz do filósofo, tratei de copiá-las da tradução brasileira de Jair Barboza d’O mundo como vontade e como representação. Sempre especifico essas cópias em notas, por isso, meu trabalho foi de fazer uma tradução parcial: traduzir o próprio Asher e não o texto de Schopenhauer traduzido por ele. Outro ponto muitíssimo importante a ser levado em consideração é que o presente texto foi comprovadamente lido pelo próprio Charles Darwin, tal como devidamente mostro na nota de rodapé número 16.

The adaptive potential of plants is commonly used as an indicator of genotypes with higher breeding program potential. However, the complexity and interaction of plant metabolic parameters pose a challenge to selection strategies. In this context, this study aimed to explore phenotypic plasticity within the germplasm of Hybrid Timor coffee. Additionally, we assessed the utility of the multivariate phenotypic plasticity index (MVPi) as a promising tool to predict genotype performance across diverse climatic conditions. To achieve this, we evaluated the performance of seven accessions from the Hybrid Timor germplasm in comparison to the Rubi and IPR 100 cultivars, known for their susceptibility and resistance to drought, respectively. The experiment took place in a greenhouse under two conditions: one with normal soil moisture levels near maximum capacity, and the other with a water deficit scenario involving a period of no irrigation followed by rehydration. Data on physiological and biochemical factors were collected at three stages: before applying the water deficit, during its imposition, and after rehydration. Growth data were obtained by the difference between the beginning and end of the experimental period Furthermore, field evaluations of the productivity of the same genotypes were carried out over two consecutive seasons. Based on physiological and biochemical assessments, the MVPi was computed, employing Euclidean distance between principal component multivariate analysis scores. Subsequently, this index was correlated with growth and productivity data through linear regressions. Our findings reveal that the plastic genotypes that are capable of significantly altering physiological and biochemical parameters in response to environmental stimuli exhibited reduced biomass loss in both aerial and root parts. As a result, this positively influenced their productivity. Enhanced plasticity was particularly prominent in accessions from the MG Germplasm Collection: MG 311—Hybrid Timor UFV 428-02, MG 270—Hybrid Timor UFV 377-21, and MG 279—Hybrid Timor UFV 376-31, alongside the Rubi MG 1192 cultivar. The MVPi emerged as a valuable instrument to assess genotype adaptability and predict their performance under varying climatic scenarios.

O presente artigo busca elucidar a epistemologia de Arthur Schopenhauer, aludindo principalmente à forma como este pensador utilizou-se da filosofia transcendental kantiana para desenvolver seu sistema filosófico. Assim aborda-se de maneira sistemática e crescente, concretizando os alicerces, delimitando conceitos e expandindo pouco a pouco o entendimento das características essenciais envoltas pelo tema, tendo por objetivo principal atingir um maior entendimento sobre os pontos centrais daquilo que Schopenhauer enxergava como os problemas da filosofia kantiana e que buscou superar e justificar em seus textos, sendo eles principalmente o problema da coisa em si e as noções de causalidade, tempo e espaço.

Nesse trabalho tive por intenção refletir a respeito da crítica que Schopenhauer faz a Kant em sua obra Sobre o fundamento da moral, precisamente sobre o fato de este ter supostamente buscado o fundamento de sua ética na teologia. Para tal empreendimento busquei colocar a prova toda argumentação de Schopenhauer e compará-la com os textos de Kant e também com as críticas encontradas em Pavão (2009 e 2018). A nossa conclusão é de que as acusações de Schopenhauer são equivocadas quando condizentes aos “seres racionais fora do mundo” e são obscuras e carecem de clareza expositiva quando tratam do conceito de sumo bem.

Plant breeding aims to develop cultivars with good agronomic traits through gene recombination and elite genotype selection. To support Coffea arabica breeding programs and assist parent selection, molecular characterization, genetic diversity (GD) analyses, and circulating diallel studies were strategically integrated to develop new cultivars. Molecular markers were used to assess the GD of 76 candidate parents and verify the crossing of potential F1 hybrids. Based on the complementary agronomic traits and genetic distance, eight elite parents were selected for circulating diallel analysis. The parents and 12 hybrids were evaluated based on 10 morpho-agronomic traits. For each trait, the effects of general and specific combining abilities, as well as the averages of the parents, hybrids, and predicted hybrids, were estimated. Crosses that maximize the genetic gains for the main agronomic traits of C. arabica were identified. Joint analysis of phenotypic and molecular data was used to estimate the correlation between molecular GD, phenotypic diversity (PD), phenotypic mean, and combining ability. The selection of parents that optimize the allele combination for the important traits of C. arabica is discussed in detail.

This study aimed to evaluate the cup quality of Coffea arabica elite genotypes submitted to wet processing. C. arabica elite genotypes, which were grouped according to their genealogy: Bourbon, Paraíso Germplasm, and Resistant to Rust. Coffees were sent to wet processing to obtain fully washed coffee. After processing and drying the coffees were subjected to cup quality analysis according to the methodology of the Association of Special Coffees (SCA). To characterize and discriminate the genealogical groups the data were submitted to chemometric analysis, Principal Component Method (PCA) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). The PCA was effective in presenting an overview of the data, demonstrating the variables that most contributed to the analysis response. However, the PCA was not efficient to group genotypes according to their genealogical origin, based on chemometric data, as it is an unsupervised analysis. Even though most of the samples were classified correctly, the PLS-DA model created has not yet managed to correctly classify the genotypes of the Paraíso germplasm group. The C. arabica elite genotypes evaluated have the potential to produce special coffees, especially on the genotypes Paraíso 2, H493-1-2-10 and UFV-7158 with scores equal to or above 90 points.

ABSTRACT: To investigate the degree of parasitism of two populations of Meloidogyne exigua, the gall index (GI) and the reproduction factor (RF) of M. exigua races 1 (Est E2) and 2 (Est E1) were analyzed in 47 progenies on F3:4 or F4:5 generation derived from the crossing between Coffea arabica cv. Catuaí Amarelo and Timor Hybrid. C. canephora cv. Apoatã IAC 2258 and C. arabica cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 were used as resistance and susceptibility checks, respectively. The genotypes that were classified as resistant or susceptible by RF were similarly classified by GI, showing a close relationship between both methodologies. The data also indicated no differences in virulence between the nematode populations, since the progenies showed similar resistance reactions to the M. exigua races 1 and 2. According to GI from the 47 mother plants evaluated, 27 progenies (57.4%) were classified as resistant to M. exigua races 1 and 2, with GI ranging from 0.0 to 1.4 and 20 progenies (42.6%) were susceptible with GI from 2.6 to 4.4. These results showed that most of the evaluated germplasm was very promising in relation to the development of new Arabica coffee cultivars with resistance to M. exigua.

Genomic Selection (GS) has allowed the maximization of genetic gains per unit time in several annual and perennial plant species. However, no GS studies have addressed Coffea arabica, the most economically important species of the genus Coffea. Therefore, this study aimed (i) to evaluate the applicability and accuracy of GS in the prediction of the genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV); (ii) to estimate the genetic parameters; and (iii) to evaluate the time reduction of the selection cycle by GS in Arabica coffee breeding. A total of 195 Arabica coffee individuals, belonging to 13 families in generation of F2, susceptible backcross and resistant backcross, were phenotyped for 18 agronomic traits, and genotyped with 21,211 SNP molecular markers. Phenotypic data, measured in 2014, 2015, and 2016, were analyzed by mixed models. GS analyses were performed by the G-BLUP method, using the RKHS (Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces) procedure, with a Bayesian algorithm. Heritabilities and selective accuracies were estimated, revealing moderate to high magnitude for most of the traits evaluated. Results of GS analyses showed the possibility of reducing the cycle time by 50%, maximizing selection gains per unit time. The effect of marker density on GS analyses was evaluated. Genomic selection proved to be promising for C. arabica breeding. The agronomic traits presented high complexity for they are controlled by several QTL and showed low genomic heritabilities, evidencing the need to incorporate genomic selection methodologies to the breeding programs of this species.

Due to high temperatures, practically all coffee farms in the state of Rondonia are of the C. canephora species. Thus, importing arabica coffee from other states becomes necessary for composition of blends, as well as for the specialty or gourmet coffee market. The purpose of this study was to select arabica coffee genotypes that exhibit satisfactory agronomic performance under high temperature conditions. The experiment was conducted in OuroPreto do Oeste, RO, Brazil, with mean annual temperature of 25.8°C and mean annual rainfall of 2300mm year-1. The experiment was composed of 114 arabica coffee genotypes, with 103 progenies and eleven control cultivars, provided by EPAMIG. A randomized block experimental design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0x1.0 meters and five plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed significant difference for the green coffee yield trait. In joint analysis, significant differences were detected among progenies and control cultivars. In the average of the four harvests, green coffee yield was 32.38 bags ha-1. The cultivars 'CatuaíVermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' and 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' stood out, achieving yields greater than 40 bags ha-1. The gain obtained from selection was 14.33 bags ha-1, which is equivalent to an increase of 44.04% in production of green coffee. The progeny H514-7-10-6-2-3-9 stood out with an average yield of 51.20 bags ha-1. In regard to maturation cycle, 56% of the progenies were classified as early maturity and 44% as medium maturity. Late maturity genotypes were not observed

Gains from selection for yield were estimated in Arabica coffee progenies carrying rust-resistance genes. Theexperiment in augmented block design was installed in Três Pontas, state of Minas Gerais. Three blocks were established with sixplants per plot, spaced 3.50 x 0.90 m, in 96 regular (F2 progenies) and two control treatments. The plant response to rust wasevaluated on a grade scale in 2008. Yield (bags per hectare) was estimated in the growing seasons 2005 to 2008. Significantdifferences between treatments for yield were observed in all harvests, except 2005. The presence of genetic variability amongprogenies allowed significant gain from selection for yield. Under the experimental conditions of this study, selection for yield can beperformed in the first high-yield year, without major losses compared to genetic gain from selection for yield when based on the meanof four harvests.

O estudo da eficiência nutricional de plantas de cafeeiro (Coffea. arabica) enxertadas visou conhecer preliminarmente os potenciais de clones de Conilon (C. canephora) como porta-enxertos quanto à absorção e utilização de N, P e S. O experimento foi realizado no viveiro do setor de cafeicultura do Departamento de Fitopatologia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, utilizando vasos de 20 litros em ambiente aberto. Foram empregados como porta-enxerto cinco progênies famílias de meio-irmãos de clones elites de C. canephora Pierre cv. Conilon do programa de melhoramento de cafeeiros robusta do INCAPER: 'ES 21', 'ES 36', 'ES 26', 'ES 23' e 'ES 38'. Utilizaram-se como enxertos as cultivares Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 e Oeiras MG 6851 e as linhagens H 419-10-3-4-4 e H 514-5-5-3 de C. arabica. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com 24 tratamentos e 3 repetições, sendo quatro pés-francos e 20 combinações de enxertia. No cultivo em vasos, a cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 quando combinada com os porta-enxertos ES 26 e ES 23 apresentou maior produção de matéria seca e utilização de N e P quando comparada com o pé-franco. Na maioria das vezes as plantas enxertadas cultivadas em vaso, tiveram desempenho igual ou inferior às plantas controles ( pé-franco) quanto à eficiência nutricional e produção de matéria seca.Studies of nutritional efficiency coffee (Coffea arabica) grafted plants were performed in order to verify the potential of Conilon (C. canephora) clones as rootstocks considering the absorption and use of N, P and S. The experiment was conducted in the coffee plant nursery of the Plant Pathology Department of the Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in an open environment using 20 L pots. Five half-sibling elite clones of C. canephora Pierre cv. Conilon ('ES 21', 'ES 36', 'ES 26', 'ES 23' and 'ES 38') obtained from the INCAPER coffee breeding program were used as rootstocks. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 and Oeiras MG 6851 and the progenies H 419-10-3-4-4 and H 514-5-5-3 of C. Arabica were used as grafts. The experimental design was completely randomized containing 24 treatments and 3 replicates with four control plants and 20 grafting combinations. Cultivating in pots, the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 combined with the rootstocks ES 26 and ES 23 presented higher production of dryer matter and use of N and P compared with the control. In general, grafted plants cultivated in pots showed similar or inferior performance in relation to the control varieties, regarding nutritional efficiency and dry matter production.

Comparativamente ao pé-franco, a combinação enxerto/porta-enxerto altera os complexos mecanismos de "feedback" entre parte aérea e raízes, afetando de maneira positiva ou negativa a eficiência nutricional da planta. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar, em cultivo hidropônico, a eficiência da absorção, translocação e utilização de Zn, Cu e Mn por mudas de Coffea arabica L., de acordo com o porta-enxerto utilizado. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, por um período de 170 dias, em vasos que continham areia como substrato, recebendo solução nutritiva circulante. Utilizaram-se, como enxerto, quatro genótipos de C. arabica: os cultivares Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 e Oeiras MG 6851 e os híbridos 'H 419-10-3-1-5' e 'H 514-5-5-3' , e, como porta-enxerto, quatro genótipos, sendo três de Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froenher: Apoatã LC 2258, Conilon Muriaé-1 e RC EMCAPA 8141 (recombinação entre clones da variedade Robustão Capixaba - EMCAPA 8141) e uma linhagem de Coffea arabica L.: Mundo Novo IAC 376-4, além de quatro pés-francos. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com 20 tratamentos, quatro repetições e uma planta por parcela. A eficiência nutricional das mudas quanto ao Zn, Cu e Mn variou de acordo com a combinação enxerto/porta-enxerto. A progênie 'H 514-5-5-3' foi mais eficiente quanto à utilização de Zn, Cu e Mn e produção de matéria seca, quando combinada com os porta-enxertos Apoatã LC 2258 e Mundo Novo IAC 376-4. O Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 foi mais eficiente na utilização de Cu e Mn quando combinado com Apoatã LC 2258.There are complexes feedback mechanisms involving the relationship rootstock/scion, whick can positively or negatively affect the plant nutrient efficiency use. The goal of the present work was to evaluate the efficiency of uptake, translocation and utilization of Zn, Cu and Mn in coffee seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse over 170 days using circulating nutrient solution in pots with sand medium. Four Coffea arabica L. genotypes were used as grafts: Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 and Oeiras MG 6851, and the hybrids 'H 419-10-3-1-5' and 'H 514-5-5-3' . Three genotypes of Coffea canephora Pierre et Froenher were used as rootstocks: Apoatã LC 2258, Conilon Muriaé-1 and RC EMCAPA 8141 (recombination among clones of the variety Robustão Capixaba - EMCAPA 8141), one line of C. arabica: Mundo Novo IAC 376-4, and four additional non-grafted plants. The experiment was in a randomized block design with 20 treatments, four replications and one plant per plot. The nutritional efficiency of the coffee seedlings for Zn, Cu and Mn varied according to the graft/rootstock combination. Progeny 'H 514-5-5-3' proved to be the most effective regarding Zn, Cu and Mn utilization and dry matter yield when combined with the rootstocks Apoatã LC 2258 and Mundo Novo IAC 376-4. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 was more effective for Cu and Mn utilization when combined with Apoatã LC 2258.

Foram estudadas 18 progênies na geração F5 do híbrido H 419, provenientes do cruzamento entre o Híbrido de Timor (UFV 445-46) e o Catuaí Amarelo IAC 30 (UFV 2143), 5 progênies na geração F5 do híbrido H 516, proveniente do cruzamento entre o Híbrido de Timor (UFV 446-08) e o Catuaí Amarelo IAC 86 (UFV 2154) e como controle o Catuaí Vermelho IAC 44 ( UFV 2144 ) com e sem controle da ferrugem. Em relação a produção de café cereja por planta e ao ataque da ferrugem as progênies H419-3-1-1-14 e a H516-2-1-1-18, foram as que apresentaram maiores produtividades e resistência a ferrugem ( nota 1 ), seguidas da H419-6-3-6-12, porém com resistência parcial à ferrugem. Essas progênies também foram as que apresentaram maior comprimento do ramo plagiotrópico, que influenciou em 37,73% (R²) na produção de café cereja por planta. O comprimento do ramo plagiotrópico, diâmetro do tronco e altura das plantas foram os atributos que mais correlacionaram r= 0.5977, r= 0.3316 e r= 0.2848, respectivamente p< 0.01, com as produtividades dessas progênies, concordando com resultados obtidos por Dhaliwal (1968). Em relação a resistência ao fungo Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br.,as progênies apresentaram herdabilidade no sentido amplo elevada (h a² = 0,80 entre e h a² = 0,96 entre e dentro das progênies), mostrando variabilidade genética alta para seleção de material resistentes à ferrugem do cafeeiro.Eighteen progenies in the F5 generation of the H 419 hybrid were studied, proceeding from the crossing between the Híbrido deTimor (UFV 445-46) and the IAC 30 Catuaí Amarelo (UFV 2143), 5 progenies in the F5 generation of the H 516 hybrid, proceeding from the crossing between the Híbrido deTimor (UFV 446-08) and the IAC 86 Catuaí Amarelo (UFV 2154) and the IAC 44 the red Catuaí (UFV 2144) as control, with and without rust control. Regarding the production of cherry coffee by plant and with the rust attack, the H419-3-1-1-14 and the H516-2-1-1-18, progenies were the ones that showed greater productivity and rust resistance (grade 0), followed by the H419-6-3-6-12, but with partial rust resistance . These progenies were, also, the ones that showed greater length of the plagiotrophycal spreads, where influenciated in 37.73% (R²) at production of cherry coffee by plant. The plagiotrophycal spread's length, fust diameter and plants height were the most correlated attributes r = 0.5977, r = 0.3316 and r = 0.2848, p < 0.01 respectively, with these progenies productivity, according results obtained by Dhaliwal (1968). Regarding to the Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br. fungus resistance, the progenies showed herdability on the wide-high way (h a² = 0,80 between and h a² = 0,96 between and inside the progenies), pointing them as resistant and with a high genetic variability for selection of resistant material to the coffee rust.

Vinte e seis descritores foram utilizados na diferenciação de linhagens de “Catimor”, Coffea arábica L. (Rubiaceae). Estes descritores foram avaliados de acordo com as estimativas de herdabilidade, de dissimilaridade entre as linhagens irmãs, de dissimilaridade entre as famílias de linhagens irmãs e a análise de agrupamento, considerando-se a genealogia como padrão de agrupamento. Várias características incluídas nos descritores de cafeeiros apresentaram altas herdabilidades, o que as indicam para serem usadas rotineiramente nos programas de melhoramento. Mesmo considerando apenas os descritores com herdabilidades acima de 80%, não foi possível distinguir todas as linhagens de café coerentemente com os dados de genealogia. O descritor cor do broto teve grande efeito na estimação das distâncias genéticas e no agrupamento das linhagens, mostrando a importância da utilização de descritores alternativos, de herança simples, como os marcadores de DNA, na distinção entre linhagens de café geneticamente próximas

Visando avaliar a eficiência da seleção antecipada para produção de grãos, foram estimadas correlações entre produções anuais e a acumulada e o coeficiente de repetibilidade que quantifica a consistência da posição relativa de genótipos durante sucessivas avaliações, obtida por meio de quatro métodos de estimação. Foram avaliadas 28 progênies de Coffea arábica na geração F3, provenientes de cruzamentos entre descendentes do “Híbrido de Timor” e cultivares de “Catuaí Vermelho” e “Catuaí Amarelo”. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos completos casualizados com 6 repetições e 4 plantas por parcela, obtendo-se dados nas 4 colheitas iniciais. O coeficiente de repetibilidade (r) do caráter produção de grãos foi, em média, superior e apresentou menor amplitude de variação entre as estimativas (r=0,39 a 0,48), quando foram consideradas a 2a, 3a e 4a colheitas combinadas. Entre os métodos de estimação utilizados, a técnica dos componentes principais baseada na matriz de correlações fenotípicas foi a mais adequada e resultou em r=0,48 e coeficiente de determinação de 0,74. Portanto, é necessário cautela na realização de seleção antecipada. As correlações indicam que poderia selecionar já a partir da 2ª colheita, usando-se seleção mais branda

Um ensaio de competição de linhagens de café (Coffea arábica L. “Catimor”) (Rubiaceae) foi conduzido com o objetivo de estimar as correlações genotípicas e as relações causa-efeito entre a produtividade de café beneficiado e outras características agronômicas. A produtividade de café beneficiado apresentou as maiores correlações com vigor vegetativo, seca de ponteiros e época de maturação. Pela análise de trilha, verificou-se que o maior efeito direto sobre a produtividade de café beneficiado foi do vigor vegetativo, com quem também apresentou a maior correlação. Houve efeito direto de seca de ponteiros sobre produtividade de café beneficiado. Apesar da alta correlação genotípica detectada entre produtividade de café beneficiado e época de maturação, estas não apresentaram relação causa-efeito. A produtividade também não foi influenciada por diâmetro da copa, altura da planta ou curvatura dos ramos

A interação entre Leucoptera coffeella e genótipos híbridos de Coffea arabica x Coffea racemosa foi estudada com o objetivo de: determinar as variáveis mais importantes para a resistência, os genótipos mais promissores bem como o mecanismo de resistência predominante. Folhas de cafeeiro, com pecíolo imerso em solução de benziladenina, foram colocadas dentro de gaiolas teladas com organza contendo adultos por 24 horas. Em seguida, diariamente com o auxílio da lupa, contou-se o número de ovos, larvas e pupas. As pupas foram transferidas para tubos fechados onde era verificada a emergência dos adultos. Através da análise de variáveis canônicas (CVA), constatou-se que tempo de vida larval e eclosão de ovos foram as variáveis que mais contribuíram para explicar as diferenças de resistência entre os genótipos de cafeeiro, C. arabica cv. 'Catuaí' (UFV 2147 c 48), C. arabica cv. 'Mundo Novo' (UFV 2150 c 40), C. racemosa (545 c 28), e quatro de híbridos resultantes do cruzamento entre C. racemosa (554) e C. arábica 'Catuaí': Híbrido 1 (UFV 557-4), Híbrido 2 (UFV 557-2), Híbrido 3 (UFV 557-03) e Híbrido 4 (UFV 557-6). E que dentre os genótipos analisados, o Híbrido 1 foi o que teve melhor desempenho em relação aos demais híbridos, sendo o genótipo mais promissor para programa de melhoramento genético visando a resistência ao bicho-mineiro. Coffee genetic improvement programs have been evolving very quickly, with frequent launches of new cultivars. The adoption of these new genetic materials by rural producers requires knowledge of agronomic performance in different production systems. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of irrigated and rainfed Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivars in the Cerrado Mineiro region. Evaluations were conducted in experimental fields across 22 farms of Arabica coffee producers, and 11 used an irrigated production system and 11 used a rainfed system. Twelve cultivars were evaluated as follows: Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144, Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10, Topázio MG 1190, MGS Epamig 1194, Catiguá MG2, MGS Catiguá 3, MGS Ametista, Pau Brasil MG1, MGS Paraíso 2, MGS Aranãs, Sarchimor MG 8840, and IAC 125 RN. Based on grain yield, processing yield, seed density, grain size, and cup quality, agronomic performance evaluations were conducted annually for the 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 harvests. The results showed that the grain yield was higher in the irrigated system compared to the rainfed system. In irrigated fields, the average increases in grain yield were 38%. Irrigation improved the performance of the cultivars in terms of processing yield, although it reduced cup quality. MGS Paraíso 2 cultivar showed the best productive performance, with an average of over four harvests of 52 and 42 bags ha−1 (1 bag = 60 kg) in irrigated and rainfed systems, respectively. The cultivars least responsive to irrigation were IAC 125 RN, MGS Catiguá 3, MGS Ametista, and MGS Paraíso 2, with grain yield increases of 24%, 26%, 27%, and 28%, respectively. The most responsive cultivars were MGS EPAMIG 1194, Sarchimor MG 8840, and Pau Brasil MG1, with grain yield increases of 33%, 35%, and 39%, respectively. The agronomic performance results of coffee cultivars in irrigated and rainfed production systems will allow rural producers to adopt cultivars that are more suitable for the Cerrado Mineiro region.
