Abstract

Abstract Background Vaccination has contributed to the reduction in vaccine preventable diseases. Despite, improved global coverage, vaccination among nomadic populations is still low especially in Africa. This study explored factors influencing vaccination uptake among pastoralist nomads in Ghana. Methods We conducted key informant interviews (KII) in 11 districts across four regions of Ghana, using grounded theory qualitative research approach. One hundred and eighty-two KII were conducted among pastoralist nomads, community opinion leaders, community health volunteers, security services personnel, local government personnel and health workers. Guided by the WHO health systems building blocks, data was coded using Nvivo 12 and analysed thematically. Results were presented as narratives with excerpts to support the findings. Results Community leaders support vaccination among pastoralist nomads as part of their leadership and governance responsibilities. Language barrier between health workers and pastoralist nomads affects service delivery. Also, healthcare providers fear being attacked by pastoralist nomads hence are hesitant to visit their settlements for vaccination. With regards to health workforce, healthcare providers’ perceived use of derogatory words and discrimination against pastoralist nomads influence their vaccination uptake. On medical product, the lack of knowledge about diseases, severity and perceived negative effects about vaccines influence vaccination uptake. Inadequate funds and logistics at the district health directorates affects outreach to nomads during vaccinations. Leveraging existing partnership between the health services and community leaders, information centers, volunteers and butchers to send health information to pastoralist nomads influence vaccination uptake. Conclusion Community leaders support vaccination among pastoralist nomads. Nomadic pastoralist miss vaccination dues to language barrier, feel discriminated against, and lack information about diseases and vaccinations. Strengthening Ghana Health Service collaboration with leaders of pastoralist nomads could build trust, create awareness and overcome language barrier between healthcare providers and pastoralist nomads.

Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Abstract

Real materials always contain, to some extent, randomness in the form of defects or irregularities. It is known since the seminal work of Anderson that randomness can drive a metallic phase to an insulating one, and the mechanism responsible for this transition is intrinsically different from the one of the interaction-induced transitions discovered by Mott. Lattice Hamiltonians, with their conceptual and computational advantages, permitted to investigate broadly the interplay of both mechanisms. However, a clear understanding of the differences (or not) with their real-space counterparts is lacking, especially in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. This work aims at shedding light on this challenging question by investigating a real-space one-dimensional model of interacting electrons in the presence of a disordered potential. The transition between delocalized and localized phases is characterized using two different indicators, namely, the single-particle occupation entropy and the position-space information entropy. In addition, the performance of density functional approximations to reproduce the exact ground-state densities of this many-body localization model are gauged.

Abstract

We prove the existence of a unique Malliavin differentiable strong solution to a stochastic differential equation on the plane with merely integrable coefficients driven by the fractional Brownian sheet with Hurst parameters less than 1/2. The proof of this result relies on a compactness criterion for square integrable Wiener functionals from Malliavin calculus ([Da Prato, Malliavin and Nualart, 1992]), variational techniques developed in the case of fractional Brownian motion ([Ba\~nos, Nielssen, and Proske, 2020]) and the concept of sectorial local nondeterminism (introduced in [Khoshnevisan and Xiao, 2007]). Abstract

In this paper we are interested in a quasi-linear hyperbolic stochastic differential equation (HSPDE) when the vector field is merely bounded and measurable. Although the deterministic counterpart of such equation may be ill-posed (in the sense that uniqueness or even existence might not be valid), we show for the first time that the corresponding HSPDE has a unique (Malliavin differentiable) strong solution. Our approach for proving this result rests on: 1) tools from Malliavin calculus and 2) variational techniques introduced in [Davie, Int. Math. Res. Not., Vol. 2007] non trivially extended to the case of SDEs in the plane by using an algorithm for the selection of certain rectangles. As a by product, we also obtain the Sobolev differentiability of the solution with respect to its initial value. The results derived here constitute a significant improvement of those in the current literature on SDEs on the plane and can be regarded as an analogous equivalent of the pioneering works by [Zvonkin, Math. Abstract

We prove path-by-path uniqueness of solution to hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations when the drift coefficient is the difference of two componentwise monotone Borel measurable functions of spatial linear growth. The Yamada-Watanabe principle for SDE driven by Brownian sheet then allows to derive strong uniqueness for such equation and thus extending the results in [Bogso, Dieye and Menoukeu Pamen, Elect. J. Probab., 27:1-26, 2022] and [Nualart and Tindel, Potential Anal., 7(3):661--680, 1997]. Assuming that the drift is globally bounded, we show that the unique strong solution is Malliavin differentiable. Abstract

In this paper we study path-by-path uniqueness for multidimensional stochastic differential equations driven by the Brownian sheet. We assume that the drift coefficient is unbounded, verifies a spatial linear growth condition and is componentwise nondeacreasing. Our approach consists of showing the result for bounded and componentwise nondecreasing drift using both a local time-space representation and a law of iterated logarithm for Brownian sheets. The desired result follows using a Gronwall type lemma on the plane. Abstract

We propose a new model for electricity pricing based on the price cap principle. The particularity of the model is that the asset price is an exponential functional of a jump L\'evy process. This model can capture both mean reversion and jumps which are observed in electricity market. It is shown that the value of an European option of this asset is the unique viscosity solution of a partial integro-differential equation (PIDE). A numerical approximation of this solution by the finite differences method is provided. The consistency, stability and convergence results of the scheme are given. 19. Mean residual life processes and associated submartingales

Abstract

We use Madan-Yor's argument to construct associated submartingales to a class of two-parameter processes that are ordered by the increasing convex dominance. This class includes processes which have MTP$_2$ integrated survival functions. We prove that the integrated survival function of an integrable two-parameter process is MTP$_2$ if and only if it is TP$_2$ in each pair of arguments when the remaining argument is fixed. This result can not be deduced from known results since there are several two-parameter processes whose integrated survival functions do not have interval support. Abstract

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a devastating motor neuron disorder caused by mutations in the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene. It remains unclear how SMN deficiency leads to the loss of motor neurons. By screening Schizosaccharomyces pombe, we found that the growth defect of an SMN mutant can be alleviated by deletion of the actin-capping protein subunit gene acp1+. We show that SMN mutated cells have splicing defects in the profilin gene, which thus directly hinder actin cytoskeleton homeostasis including endocytosis and cytokinesis. We conclude that deletion of acp1+ in an SMN mutant background compensates for actin cytoskeleton alterations by restoring redistribution of actin monomers between different types of cellular actin networks. Our data reveal a direct correlation between an impaired function of SMN in snRNP assembly and defects in actin dynamics. They also point to important common features in the pathogenic mechanism of SMA and ALS.

25. Weak decreasing stochastic order

Abstract

We introduce the notion of weak decreasing stochastic (WDS) ordering for real-valued processes with negative means, which, to our knowledge, has not been studied before. Thanks to Madan-Yor's argument, it follows that the WDS ordering is a necessary and sufficient condition for a process with negative mean to be embeddable in a standard Brownian motion by the Cox and Hobson extension of the Az\'ema-Yor algorithm. Since the decreasing stochastic order is stronger than the WDS order, then, for every stochastically non-decreasing family of probability measures with densities, the Cox-Hobson stopping times provide an associated Markov process. We use multivariate total positivity theory to exhibit new families of peacocks. As the authors of \cite{HPRY}, our guiding example is the result of Carr-Ewald-Xiao \cite{CEX}. We shall introduce the notion of strong conditional monotonicity. This concept is strictly more restrictive than the conditional monotonicity as defined in \cite{HPRY} (see also \cite{Be}, \cite{BPR1} and \cite{ShS1}). There are many random vectors which are strongly conditionally monotone (SCM). Indeed, we shall prove that multivariate totally positive of order 2 (MTP$_2$) random vectors are SCM. As a consequence, stochastic processes with MTP$_2$ finite-dimensional marginals are SCM. Abstract

Background: Vaccination has contributed to the reduction in vaccine preventable diseases. Despite, improved global coverage, vaccination among nomadic populations is still low especially in Africa. This study explored factors influencing vaccination uptake among pastoralist nomads in Ghana. Methods: We conducted key informant interviews (KII) in 11 districts across four regions of Ghana, using grounded theory qualitative research approach. One hundred and eighty-two KII were conducted among pastoralist nomads, community opinion leaders, community health volunteers, security services personnel, local government personnel and health workers. Guided by the WHO health systems building blocks, data was coded using Nvivo 12 and analysed thematically. Results were presented as narratives with excerpts to support the findings. Results: Community leaders support vaccination among pastoralist nomads as part of their leadership and governance responsibilities. Language barrier between health workers and pastoralist nomads affects service delivery. Also, healthcare providers fear being attacked by pastoralist nomads hence are hesitant to visit their settlements for vaccination. With regards to health workforce, healthcare providers' perceived use of derogatory words and discrimination against pastoralist nomads influence their vaccination uptake. On medical product, the lack of knowledge about diseases, severity and perceived negative effects about vaccines influence vaccination uptake. Inadequate funds and logistics at the district health directorates affects outreach to nomads during vaccinations. Leveraging existing partnership between the health services and community leaders, information centers, volunteers and butchers to send health information to pastoralist nomads influence vaccination uptake. Conclusion: Community leaders support vaccination among pastoralist nomads. Nomadic pastoralist miss vaccination dues to language barrier, feel discriminated against, and lack information about diseases and vaccinations. Strengthening Ghana Health Service collaboration with leaders of pastoralist nomads could build trust, create awareness and overcome language barrier between healthcare providers and pastoralist nomads. Abstract

Pulmonary congestion (PC) is common in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We explored the association of anemia and pulmonary congestion in HD patients. A prospective pilot observational study included 18 patients on maintenance HD. Individual B-lines scores (BLS; 8-sites method) were obtained by lung ultrasound, before and after the first two consecutive HD sessions of the week (HD1-HD2), with different inter-dialytic intervals (68 vs. 44 h). Bioimpedance spectroscopy body composition (BIS) was performed before each HD session. Hemoglobin (Hb) levels, in addition to circulating markers of chronic inflammation (soluble urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor [suPAR], soluble Suppression of Tumorigenicity 2 [sST2]) were obtained. Mean (±SD) BLS values were quite elevated at all time points: Pre-HD1 (16 ± 5.53), post-HD1 (15.3 ± 6.63), pre-HD2 (16.3 ± 5.26) and post-HD2 (13.6 ± 5.83), respectively. No direct significant correlation was found between inflammation markers levels and BLS. However, mean levels (±SD, ng/mL) of suPAR pre-HD1 (7.88 ± 3.07) and pre-HD2 (7.78 ± 3.02) remained significantly above the normal range (<4 ng/mL), and sST2 levels reached 2-fold the upper normal value in most patients (27.4 ± 17.8). Pulmonary congestion reflected by BLS was negatively correlated to Hb levels pre-HD1 (R² = 0.439, p = 0.003), and pre-HD2 (R² = 0.301, p = 0.018). In addition, Hb levels were negatively correlated to global volume status estimated by BIS (R² = 0.351, p = 0.009). Hemoglobin levels were negatively correlated to pulmonary congestion and to the global volume status evaluated by BIS. Chronic inflammation markers were increased in HD patients, suggesting a complex volume- and non-volume-dependent pathophysiology of pulmonary congestion in HD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fundación Centro San Juan de Jerusalén (FCSJJ), specialized in comprehensive care of children and adolescents aged 0-18, with neurodevelopmental disorders, sought alternatives, for its Pedagogy area to maintain contact with children from 2 to 6 years old, proposing virtual playful activities. FCSJJ educators created a virtual space on Zoom and Facebook Live, named Club San Juan, and thus they transformed pandemic adversity into an educational opportunity. The objective of this action research was to explore socio-educational practices to promote learning among educators, children, and their families. The methodology used in this research was exploratory and inductive., Al inicio de la pandemia de covid-19, la Fundación Centro San Juan de Jerusalén (FCSJJ), especializada en la atención integral de infantes y adolescentes, de cero a dieciocho años y con trastornos del neurodesarrollo, buscó alternativas con las que el área de Pedagogía logró mantener el contacto con los escolares de dos a seis años, a través de actividades lúdicas virtuales. Las educadoras de la FCSJJ crearon un espacio virtual en Zoom y Facebook Live, con el nombre del Club San Juan, para así transformar la adversidad que generó la pandemia en una oportunidad educativa. El objetivo de esta investigación-acción es explorar prácticas socio-educativas que suscitaron aprendizajes entre educadoras, estudiantes y familias. La metodología usada en esta investigación fue exploratoria e inductiva.
