The quality and choices of food contribute significantly to human well‐being and support the development of healthy communities worldwide. Despite being the world's largest vegetarian nation, India predominantly follows lacto‐vegetarianism, allowing dairy consumption and creating a distinct dietary landscape shaped by influences from religious, social, and cultural beliefs. This complexity, where dairy and cultural‐religious factors play pivotal roles, makes India a compelling and unique case for understanding the intricacies of adopting vegan dietary preferences. In the present study, an integrated model derived from the health belief model (HBM), the value attitude behavior (VAB) model, and social stigma was adopted as the theoretical framework. The study analyses the interactive effect of perceived benefits, barriers, environmental beliefs, health beliefs, and anti‐speciesism values, with the novel inclusion of social stigma as an independent variable affecting attitudes and intentions toward adopting a vegan diet. To achieve its objective, the study employed a quantitative methodology, recording consumers' responses through a structured questionnaire. The analysis encompassed 504 valid responses from Indian consumers from diverse backgrounds and varied locations. The result unveiled several noteworthy and unique trends. It was found that perceived benefits had a positive impact, while perceived barriers had a negative impact on the health beliefs associated with a vegan diet. Environmental beliefs, health beliefs, and anti‐speciesism values exhibited a positive influence on individuals' attitudes toward adopting a vegan diet. Conversely, social stigma had a negative impact on attitudes toward a vegan diet. Attitude emerged as a pivotal mediator, connecting the social stigma to the vegan diet adoption behavior. The findings of the study offer valuable insights for policymakers, manufacturers, and marketers seeking to encourage the adoption of vegan diets in countries with predominantly vegetarian populations. Additionally, the study puts forth actionable strategies, outlined as implications to promote the widespread adoption of the vegan diet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the modern, globalized, world, millions of laws and statutes are applicable to humankind, in order to curb and regulate the activity of every individual. Within the last decades, sanctions multiplied and aggravated, but who is going to pay for having caused a catastrophic pandemic? Actually, it seems that the answer is: "nobody". However, the article gives some suggestion, by applying new "eco-tort" and civil liability principles to this new and unprecedented crisis. Furthermore, it gives some urgent public policy guidelines to minimize the risk of new pandemics. It also advocates a new world order, based on the promotion of anti-speciesism, non-violence, environmental protection and fair sharing of natural resources, while rejecting the free market theories: it seems the best way for finally overcoming the crisis and preventing new ones. If there is a specificity of modern morality, it is that it is built on the human exception, on a set of presuppositions that ensured its justification: responsibility, autonomy, capacity, will, free will... and on a certain number of figures of the engaged individual who illustrated it: entrepreneur, citizen, activist... Analyzing the internal evolution of this anthropology of the moderns underlying their way of considering morality, the article first shows how the human being, placed at the top of the chain of beings because of his intellectual and moral capacities, sees his exceptionality progressively transformed into responsibility for the disasters of the anthropocene. It then shows how this internal evolution of our anthropological coordinates actually opened the doors to the gradual exit from this exception and the emergence of what the article calls a zoo-techno-anthropology continuum. On the one hand, anti-speciesism, the rise of vegetarianism, of veganism, of sensitivity to animal suffering, of the propensity to lend non-human animals capacities that were hitherto reserved for human animals... On the other hand, the trivialization of post- or trans-humanism, of artificial intelligence,... which leads us, for example, to wonder about the responsibility of robots. A radical transformation of the coordinates from which to think about morality.

This paper focuses on the motives for vegetarian choices in contemporary Italian food culture, with specific reference to the role of the representations of death. The study adopts a qualitative research design aimed at an in-depth exploration of the reasons for avoiding meat, following an ethnographic method. Twenty-two participants (55% women, 45% men) aged 19-74, all vegetarians or vegans, mainly from Northern and Central Italy, were involved. Data from the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis were examined according to the qualitative thematic analysis: the results show the role of death in the construction of disgust towards meat, running parallel with an emphasis on spirituality, ethical treatment of animals and the environment as reasons for avoiding meat, in particular, the concern-generating disgust and its relationship with the representation of death as a contaminating essence. The basis of disgust lies in this connection, from which the idea that oral consumption of contaminants characterized by corruptive properties, passing through the flesh of dead animals to humans, derives. The role of anti-speciesism is considered as a latent perspective, which may influence the vegetarian and vegan choices.

Environment Secretary for the British Government Michael Gove has announced his plan to increase the current maximum sentence that can be awarded to animal abuse offenders from six months to five years. In this critical analysis of the proposal, I will firstly outline the legislative proposal in terms of its aims, and then follow by providing statistics and referring to the most abhorrent cases of cruelty to demonstrate unequivocally the need for the proposal to be implemented. Following this, I will set out the positions of two major relevant stakeholders in response to the proposal: the League Against Cruel Sports, and the RSPCA. I will then proceed to commend the proposal as an important step forward for nonhuman animal welfare, especially given the increasing acknowledgement of the link between violence toward humans and toward nonhuman animals. I will then turn, however, to the two issues that I identify with the proposal and the context within which it has been introduced; firstly, that it highlights our pretension for protecting the welfare of companion animals while simultaneously contributing to the suffering of other animals that are also sentient beings; secondly, that recent Conservative party policies concerning nonhuman animals have been inimical to their welfare and, for this reason, the proposal must be taken with a pinch of salt.

The following article proposes to reframe and develop the concept of «speciesism» as a sacrificial norm. The hinge around which this norm is developed is that of «species» whose political/performative connotation is obscured by the supposed objectivity of a scientific lexicon. Therefore, the following pages propose a deconstruction of such a concept and suggest an alternative way to oppose the speciesist machine: the anti-speciesism of the common.

This article draws on 22 interviews with Italian anti-speciesists to develop a sociological account of the quest for ethical consistency in the animal rights movement. The essay analyzes three relevant consequences of the search for consistency—identity extension, social segregation, and self-transformation—and discusses their impact on the activists’ lives. Consistency appears as both a source of self-gratification and a burden. On the one hand, self-gratification results from a sense of moral pride and the certainty of fighting for a just cause. On the other hand, the pursuit of a consistent lifestyle is highly demanding in terms of time and energy, and can have negative effects on the activist’s relationships with family and peers. While the paper adopts an individual-level perspective, it also examines how the findings might relate to vegan mobilization. It is argued that the findings might be generalizable to activists in other countries who face similar challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
While veganism has been growing and receiving increasing attention, there is a gap on how factors such as health and environmental beliefs and anti-speciesism values, that create attitude towards their diets, influence their vegan behaviour. Furthermore, the role of social stigma experienced by vegans has not been examined within this context. Building on the value-attitude-behaviour model, the present study addresses this gap by conceptualizing these different streams of variables to build a testable conceptual framework for understanding how these factors contribute to maintaining a vegan lifestyle. The study uses structural equation modelling to analyse the data on 315 vegan consumers, testing the framework and its variables. The study shows that the value‐attitude‐behaviour model can successfully be applied to vegan behaviour. The findings show that anti-speciesism values are strong predictors of a positive attitude toward a vegan diet. Furthermore, social stigma does not inhibit consumers from maintaining a vegan lifestyle. Ultimately, the study contributes to a novel multifaceted model for understanding veganism in broader terms, allowing for the examination of other influencing factors on a complex outcome. The findings are useful for policymakers and marketing practitioners to engage in understanding behavioural segments.

The film directed by Marina de Van on a script by Bertrand Santini is an overall faithful adaptation of Perrault’s tale “Le petit Poucet”. The authors of this film explored the fantasmatic dimension of the tale, especially through the regressive character of the ogre, symbolic support of multiple transgressions (anthropophagy, incest, paedophilia). Weaving connections between several types of violence, including against animals which exemplifies the violence of today’s world, this original and powerful adaptation highlights the timelessness of the tale and it anchors it in modernity. Starting from a comparison with two previous adaptations of the tale (Michel Boisrond’s, then Olivier Dahan’s “Le Petit Poucet”), this study is interested in the tension between naturalism and stylization at work in this last adaptation, including in the scenes where the marvelous is summoned, and analyzes the game of hide-and-seek that the film maintains with the tale.

Analysis of the debate on the issue of animal rights in three dialoguing philosophical perspectives: speciesism, anti-speciesism and non-speciesism. The objective is to analyze each of these aspects, without the intention of exhausting any of them, from three paradigmatic thinkers: Carl Cohen, Tom Regan and Peter Singer. The investigation is developed taking as an entry point for the debate the proposal of Carl Cohen who denies that animals have rights, but defends that humans have responsibilities towards animals. Next, Tom Regan's conception as a litigant to the previous one is presented, since he not only criticizes Carl Cohen's speciesism but also states that non-human animals are beings that have rights by sharing gender properties, among which, to be able to feel pain and have emotions like humans. Finally, the ideas of non-speciesism are presented through Peter Singer's thinking, both in terms of the thesis of the moral necessity of guaranteeing rights to animals, and of basing human and animal relationships on practical ethics. This is done not only because of the philosophical dialogue between these authors regarding the object (animals have or do not have rights), but also because of the philosophical adherence to utilitarianism, although each one has a different conception of what is meant by “very common". It is believed that Peter Singer's perspective is the one that best meets the expectations of contemporary society, which not only have to balance ingrained habits (such as a meat-based diet and scientific experiments using animals) with the political demands of new social agents (including veganism), in terms of thinking about the new interfaces of modern law, including the possibility of including animals in this debate. Finally, it is argued that from the path proposed by Peter Singer it is possible to keep the dialogue open, think about the exceptions that the issue demands and carry out the project of including the issue of animal rights in the contemporary philosophical debate.

The monstrous power of the blind in Diderot's 1949 Letter is not due to its ability to make people laugh or afraid, as its most common etymology would indicate: monstrum, monstrare, to point to an abnormal fact. The monstrous power of Diderot's monster is that of one who shows: monere, monitor, in the manner of a guide or pathfinder. It shows us that everything that lives, and especially the human being, is a hybrid. It takes the idea of a possible mixture of animals and humans into account, thus the boldness of an 'anti-speciesism' as presented in the fantastical bestiary of D'Alemberts Dream. It brings the humanism of essence to an end and invites us to redefine a new social bond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[EN] This project consists of a comic entitled ESTO ESTÁ DE MUERTE (THIS TAS- TES LIKE DEATH) that tells the story of the situation that farm animals go through as part of the animal exploitation industry. Using illustrations, the intention has been to expose what happens behind the walls of each slaughterhouse, farm or any place used for the use or com- mercialization of animals as a product. The comic reflects the history of these species, through characters who, by means of their decisions regarding their food, experience what is behind each “product”, going through the production-distribution-consumption rou- te. A mysterious character, always camouflaged with the environment, tries to make consumers understand what happens to these animals and what they have to go through every day in the animal exploitation industry. The objective of this work is to show what goes on behind the consump- tion of food of animal origin and to get a solid base to understand and have the capacity to structure a comic strip. In addition to improving the drawing technique and reinforcing the ana- tomy of the characters and the environment, [ES] Este proyecto consiste en un cómic titulado ESTO ESTÁ DE MUERTE, que cuenta la situación por la que pasan los animales considerados de granja for- mando parte de la industria de explotación animal. 20. Genesis of animalist subjectivities: emotions, bodies and relationships inter-species
- Abstract
This article addresses the configuration of the ethical-political subjectivity of anti-speciesist animalisms in Ecuador. Emotions and the body in this constitution are taken as explanatory sociological variables. The analytical framework used has as a theoretical umbrella the sociology of emotions in collective action and the studies of the late Foucault on the process of ethical-political subjectivation. This research is part of the field of Critical Animal Studies. This article’s research methodology is qualitative. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with anti-speciesist actors. This article is made up of two sections. The first section, “Early relationships with non-human animals”, explains mechanisms that operate as catalysts of sensitivity towards non-human animals, such as 1) daily relationships, 2) relationships of animal defense and protection, and 3) experiences of loss. The second section, “Primary subjective traumatic experiences with non-human animals”, deals with moments of emotional breakdown in early childhood. These promote the affective soil of the animalistic subject's constitution, such as experiences with high affective load for subjects in slaughterhouses as well as in bullrings., El presente artículo aborda la configuración del sujeto ético-político de los animalismos anti-especistas en el Ecuador.

Nutritional choices are affected by culture, tradition and above all by the narrative we adopt for human history. The article gives an overview of the (pseudo)scientific beliefs, psychological factors and ethical orientations that affect nutritional choices. Among the various food theories today, great importance is given, for example, to the so-called Paleolithic diet, which consists of proposing a dietary model based on blood groups, which are assumed to have developed throughout different periods of the natural evolution of Homo sapiens, which were characterized by peculiar alimentary regimes. Moreover, psychological determinant drivers affect food choices and could lead to pathological eating behaviors (e.g., anorexia, overeating, binge eating). Finally, the ethical aspects of nutrition are closely correlated to vegetarianism, which in turn embraces an anti-speciesist thinking and recognizes the need for humans not to inflict unnecessary suffering on animals. Vegetarianism, anti-speciesism and ecologism often represent different aspects of the same issue: a lifestyle that testifies the need for a change in traditional paradigms, in the interest of humankind and the future of life on our planet. This paper aims to put light on the anti-speciesism of some Chinese poets. To this end, this paper briefly introduces how the “Three Doctrines” (Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism) take a stand on this issue. Then, it emphasizes the poets’ point of view through the translation and comment of a dozen of poems written over centuries.

This special issue devoted to anti-speciesism collects essays which examine different branches of modern and contemporary studies on the status of non-human animals and the role that cognitive progress should play in our ability to abandon the idea that something is uniquely human, analyzing at the same time the difficult relationship between the inclusion of other animals and the law.

Les rumeurs rattachées aux pratiques zoophiles, avec leur cortège de traumatismes, de maladies et autres « sanctions » (naturelles et surnaturelles) nous rappellent que l’abolition des différences, sur le plan de l’imaginaire, a des effets catastrophiques : loin d’assurer la paix, elle engendre le désordre et alimente les conflits., Following advances in ethology, leading to the idea that animals think, suffer and even make plans for the future ; data from anthropology, showing how many societies regard animals as individuals in their own right ; and deductions of philosophy, whereby if an animal counts as an individual then it has rights, the human/animal boundary is experiencing vast changes. This questioning, illustrated by works such as Animal Liberation (1975) by Peter Singer, has collateral effects : by « liberating » animals, other barriers are also broken down and thus a whole range of fantasies about inter-species sex can be imagined. Although logically conceivable, this revolution poses problems of a symbolic nature.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a new way of thinking about the theory and practice of human rights to accommodate the demands of vegans for basic moral rights for nonhuman animals. The work firstly outlines the ways in which the claims of vegans, under the right to freedom of thought and conscience, are largely unsupported by existing human rights because they are typically outweighed by the wider interests of the majority. Drawing on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, the thesis considers arguments that ground the nature of vegan claims in the ethics of alterity. It specifically utilises the argument that the basis of human rights recognises ethical responsibility to the precarious, mortal other. Upendra Baxi cautiously supports the application of Levinas’ philosophy to the ethics of law, and there is a slowly growing body of literature in this regard. This thesis is the first human rights work to show that Levinas’ ethics of alterity can also be applied to nonhuman others, and that human rights arguments can include claims that the avoidable suffering of nonhuman animals is a human rights wrong. The argument developed within this thesis allows a reconceptualisation of the human rights demands of vegans as claims representing a well-established ethical regard for nonhumans. Looking to Levinas’ ethics of alterity not only illustrates a new approach to human rights litigation to accommodate vegans but also grounds the protection of other animals and allows for a reconceptualisation of the very idea of human rights.

When animal representations and symbols reconfigure and challenge human status, we are then confronted with a transition from theriomorphism to the so-called Animal Question. This means that, from simple tropes, animal figures become epistemological operators that force a reconsideration of anthropocentrism and highlight the limits of speciesism. Ivano Ferrari’s poetry collections “Macello” (2004) and “La morte moglie” (2013) are, within Italian literature, among the most recent and intense examples of this shift from theriomorphism to the Animal Question. The poems constitute a type of diary of the period Ferrari spent working in the abattoir in Belfiore, near Mantua. His writing bears witness to the tensions present in the relationship between humans and animals when, inside and outside of the slaughterhouse, they become respectively executioner and victim, revealing even the profound links between cruelty to the animal (interspecific) and cruelty to the human (intraspecific). Ferrari’s compositions also show how, precisely in the inhumane space of the slaughterhouse, contact with the animal is possible, contact that reduces that distance between species caused by anthropocentrism., Cuando las representaciones y símbolos de animales reconfiguran y cuestionan el estatus de lo humano, nos enfrentamos a la transición del teriomorfismo a la llamada Cuestión Animal.

- Abstract
The article aims to give an ethnographic account of the ethics of an anti-speciesist Italian militant group. I define the ideology underpinning their activism as “anti-humanistic anti-speciesism”, since animal advocacy goes hand in hand with overt contempt for human beings. I classify the activities of the group into two different spheres: the sphere of ethics, defined in Max Weber’s terms as an ideologically coherent lifestyle; and the sphere of morals, concerning — as in Emile Durkheim’s vocabulary — the defense of the group from doctrinal and physical challenges. Finally, I claim that empirical research on ethical and moral phenomena is needed in order to improve our understanding of contemporary pluralistic societies.
