1. High-latitude precipitation as a driver of multicentennial variability of the AMOC in a climate model of intermediate complexity

Abstract

Centennial-scale variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in the absence of external forcing has been identified in several climate models, but proposed mechanisms differ considerably. Therefore, better understanding of processes governing AMOC variability at these timescales is needed. Here, we analyze numerical simulations with PlaSim-LSG, an Earth System Model Intermediate Complexity (EMIC), which exhibits strong multicentennial oscillations of AMOC strength under constant pre-industrial boundary conditions. We identify a novel mechanism in which these oscillations are driven by salinity anomalies from the Arctic Ocean, which can be attributed to changes in high-latitude precipitation. We further corroborate our findings by conducting a set of millennial-length sensitivity experiments, and we interpret the mechanism by formulating a three-box model which qualitatively reproduces regular oscillations of the AMOC. While PlaSim-LSG lacks complexity compared to state-of-the-art models, our results reveal that precipitation minus evaporation (P–E) change in the Arctic is a physically plausible driver of centennial-scale AMOC variability. We discuss how this mechanism might be most relevant in climate states warmer than the present-day, raising questions about the state-dependence of multicentennial AMOC variability.

Abstract

55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetization studies of the series of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin films have been performed at low temperature. Two distinct lines were observed, at 322 MHz and 380 MHz, corresponding to two different phases, the former located at the interface, with localized charges, and the latter corresponding to the film bulk, with itinerant carriers (as it was also found in Ca manganite films). The spin-echo amplitude was measured as a function of a dc magnetic field applied either in the film plane or perpendicular to it. The field dependence of both the main NMR signal intensity and frequency shift is quite consistent with that calculated in a simple single domain model. The best fit to the model shows that magnetization rotation processes play a dominant role when the applied field exceeds the effective anisotropy field. Abstract

The resistivity of thin $La_{0.7}A_{0.3}MnO_{3}$ films ($A=Ca, Sr$) is investigated in a wide temperature range. The comparison of the resistivities is made among films grown by different techniques and on several substrates allowing to analyze samples with different amounts of disorder. In the low-temperature nearly half-metallic ferromagnetic state the prominent contribution to the resistivity scales as $T^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha \simeq 2.5$ for intermediate strengths of disorder supporting the theoretical proposal of single magnon scattering in presence of minority spin states localized by the disorder. For large values of disorder the low-temperature behavior of the resistivity is well described by the law $T^{3}$ characteristic of anomalous single magnon scattering processes, while in the regime of low disorder the $\alpha$ exponent tends to a value near 2. In the high temperature insulating paramagnetic phase the resistivity shows the activated behavior characteristic of polaronic carriers. Finally in the whole range of temperatures the experimental data are found to be consistent with a phase separation scenario also in films doped with strontium ($A=Sr$)., Comment: 5 figures

Abstract

Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and reflectivity measurements were carried out on ultrathin (a few unit cells thick) superconducting heterostructures, based on Ba0.9Nd0.1CuO(sub 2+x) and CaCuO2 individual blocks, using undulator radiation from a third-generation synchroton. This analysis shows that the interfaces between the different constituent blocks are very sharp with roughness less than one unit cell.

Abstract

We have grown LaMnO3 thin films on (001) LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction confirms that the films are only slightly relaxed and are oriented “square on square” relative to the substrate. The measured Raman spectra closely resemble that observed in bulk LaMnO3, which indicates no relevant distortions of the MnO6 octahedra induced by the epitaxial strain. Therefore, no detectable changes in the lattice dynamics occurred in our LaMnO3 strained films relative to the bulk case. 55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance identifies the presence of localized Mn4+ states. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetization measures TN=131(3) K and a saturation moment μ=1.09μB/Mn, revealing a small concentration of Mn4+ and placing our films within the antiferromagnetic insulating phase. Abstract

In this paper, we illustrate an approach to discriminate between epitaxial strain and other factors responsible for the decrease of the metal–insulator transition temperature (TP) in thin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Using this approach, we have estimated the effect of the biaxial strain on TP. Ultrathin films, independent of epitaxial strain, do not show any metal–insulator transition over the full temperature range. This finding confirms the existence of an interface dead layer. The strain-independent decrease in TP, relative to its bulk value, observed for a much wider thickness range (up to about 1000 Å) can most likely be attributed to oxygen deficiency. Abstract

In recent years, software-based face presentation attack detection (PAD) methods have seen a great progress. However, most existing schemes are not able to generalize well in more realistic conditions. The objective of this competition is to evaluate and compare the generalization performances of mobile face PAD techniques under some real-world variations, including unseen input sensors, presentation attack instruments (PAI) and illumination conditions, on a larger scale OULU-NPU dataset using its standard evaluation protocols and metrics. Thirteen teams from academic and industrial institutions across the world participated in this competition. This time typical liveness detection based on physiological signs of life was totally discarded. Instead, every submitted system relies practically on some sort of feature representation extracted from the face and/or background regions using hand-crafted, learned or hybrid descriptors. Interesting results and findings are presented and discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Thin films of LaMn[O.sub.3] (LMO) compounds were prepared by pulsed laser deposition and characterized through x-ray diffraction measurements. The study demonstrates that the epitaxial strain does not induce relevant tilting or rotation of the Mn[O.sub.6] octahedra enough to influence the observed Raman spectra, which did not show any sizable shift or broadening of peaks relative to the typical bulk spectra.

An approach to discriminate between epitaxial strain and other factors responsible for the decrease of the metal-insulator transition temperature (T(sub p)) in thin La(sub 0.7)Sr(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) films grown by pulsed laser deposition is presented. The effects of the biaxial strain on T(sub p) are estimated by using this approach.

Abstract

In this article, we investigate the effects of oxygen partial pressure in the deposition chamber on the optical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films; in particular, we examine the variation of the refractive index with oxygen flux. ZnO thin films were deposited by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). We have found a preferential c-axis growth of ZnO films, with slightly variable deposition rates from 2.6 to 3.8 angstrom/s. Conversely, the refractive index exhibits, from ultraviolet (UV) to near infrared (IR), a considerable and almost linear variation when the oxygen flux value in the deposition chamber varies from 0 to 10 seem.

Abstract

Mn-55 nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetization studies of the series of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin films have been performed at low temperature. Two distinct lines were observed, at 322 MHz and 380 MHz, corresponding to two different phases, the former located at the interface, with localized charges, and the latter corresponding to the film bulk, with itinerant carriers (as it was also found in Ca manganite films). The spin-echo amplitude was measured as a function of a dc magnetic field applied either in the film plane or perpendicular to it. The field dependence of the NMR signal intensity above the effective anisotropy field agrees well with a model of magnetically homogeneous sample. The enhanced magnetic anisotropy estimated for the NMR signal from the interface is consistent with its very small thickness, indicating similar magnetic properties in charge localized and itinerant regions.

Abstract

Automatic face recognition in unconstrained environments is a challenging task. To test current trends in face recognition algorithms, we organized an evaluation on face recognition in mobile environment. This paper presents the results of 8 different participants using two verification metrics. Most submitted algorithms rely on one or more of three types of features: local binary patterns, Gabor wavelet responses including Gabor phases, and color information. The best results are obtained from UNILJ-ALP, which fused several image representations and feature types, and UC-HU, which learns optimal features with a convolutional neural network. Additionally, we assess the usability of the algorithms in mobile devices with limited resources. © 2013 IEEE.
