Violence against women in the family is a problem affecting our society in which the roots of patriarchy continue to be the source (of reproduction) of gender-based violence. The paper presents some of the domestic research on violence against women in the family in order to see which forms of violence they are targeting. Also, on the basis of secondary material, forms of psychological, emotional and economic violence are described, which victims of violence find more difficult to recognize and are thus not aware of being exposed to them. Based on the data of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia, data on registered acts of domestic violence in the period from 2013 to 2017 are presented.

The introduction of antipsychotic medication in the 1950s forever changed the outlook on the treatment of schizophrenia, although there is still a large proportion of patients who do not reach functional recovery. At least 30% of patients do not respond to Clozapine, the tricyclic dibenzodiazepine with complex pharmacological actions, which was proven to be more effective than any other antipsychotic in the treatment of schizophrenia. According to most of the therapeutic guidelines for schizophrenia, Clozapine is the third line therapy for patients who did not respond to other antipsychotics. Large inter-individual variability exists for Clozapine bioavailability and plasma steadystate concentrations and clearance. Clozapine is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 oxidase enzyme family (CYP450). Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2), which is polymorphically expressed in humans, is the main enzyme of Clozapine metabolism. This case report addresses the influence of CYP1A2*1F genetic polymorphism on Clozapine metabolism, explains the primary non-response of a young patient with schizophrenia due to increased gene expression in homozygous genotype *1F/*1F (increased metabolism of clozapine) and underlies the importance of personalizing schizophrenia treatment by means of genetic and other molecular tools, at least in the cases of "treatment resistance".

Introduction: Emerging research suggests that being exposed to bullying during childhood can increase the risk of psychotic experiences in adulthood. Aggressive peer relations among adolescents are more frequent in boys, both for being victims or perpetrators. Aim: To evaluate whether bullying was more prevalent among Serbian clinical population of patients with psychosis in comparison to their healthy siblings and controls, and to analyze gender differences regarding bullying. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated schizophrenia spectrum patients (n = 52, age = 29.3 ± 5.9 yrs, in remission, illness duration

Humans are substantially a social species. Effective mental treatment cannot be obtained without addressing social behavior. Social cognition refers to the mental processes underlying social interactions, which allow individuals to make sense of the other peoples' behavior, to decipher emotions on their faces, and to draw conclusions about their intentions. The core domains of this multifaceted concept are theory of mind, social cue perception, attributional style and emotion perception/ processing. The amygdala, orbital frontal cortex and temporal cortex areas are typically activated during the processing of information within social-emotional context. The aforementioned brain areas are recognized as the major components of the so-called 'social brain'- specialized for the social interactions in humans. Adequate perceiving and processing of the social information is essential for an effective social functioning, which becomes obvious when it goes awry. Various psychiatric disorders are characterized by social cognitive deficits, among which schizophrenias, depression-anxiety and autism spectrum disorders were most broadly studied to date. Growing evidence suggest that these deficits underlie poor functional outcomes in patients with mental health impairments and have an important role in the initiation and maintenance of the disorders' symptoms. One of the most important goals of social neuroscience research is to provide a treatment intervention that will improve patients' social cognitive skills and the functional outcome. All together, the present review aims to provide a contemporary overview of the concept of social cognition, to outline its relation to psychopathology, and to discuss the implications for clinical practice and treatment.

Bacillus velezensis isolates are among the most promising plant-associated beneficial bacteria used as biocontrol agents. However, various aspects of the chemical communication between the plant and these beneficials, determining root colonization ability, remain poorly described. Here we investigated the molecular basis of such interkingdom interaction occurring upon contact between Bacillus velezensis and its host via the sensing of pectin backbone homogalacturonan (HG). We showed that B . velezensis stimulates key developmental traits via a dynamic process involving two conserved pectinolytic enzymes. This response integrates transcriptional changes leading to the switch from planktonic to sessile cells, a strong increase in biofilm formation, and an accelerated sporulation dynamics while conserving the potential to efficiently produce specialized secondary metabolites. As a whole, we anticipate that this response of Bacillus to cell wall-derived host cues contributes to its establishment and persistence in the competitive rhizosphere niche and ipso facto to its activity as biocontrol agent., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) represents the efficiency-limiting reaction in water electrolyzers, metal-air batteries, and unitized regenerative fuel cells. To achieve high-efficiency OER in alkaline media, we fabricated three novel electrocatalysts by the assembly of as-prepared Co 45 Pt 55 alloy nanoparticles (NPs) on three different carbon-based support materials: reduced graphene oxide (CoPt/rGO), mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (CoPt/mpg-CN), and commercial Ketjenblack carbon (CoPt/KB). Voltammetry studies revealed that CoPt/rGO electrocatalyst provided lower OER overpotentials accompanied by higher currents and specific current density values than the other two studied materials. Moreover, CoPt/rGO outperformed commercial CoPt/C electrocatalysts in terms of notably higher specific current densities. Additionally, it was found that CoPt/rGO electrocatalyst activity increases with increasing temperature up to 85°C, as suggested by the increase in the exchange current density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies of three electrocatalysts in OER revealed similar charge transfer resistance, although CoPt/rGO provided a higher current density. Bacillus velezensis is considered as model species for plant-associated bacilli providing benefits to its host such as protection against phytopathogens. This is mainly due to the potential to secrete a wide range of secondary metabolites with specific and complementary bioactivities. This metabolite arsenal has been quite well defined genetically and chemically but much remains to be explored regarding how it is expressed under natural conditions and notably how it can be modulated upon interspecies interactions in the competitive rhizosphere niche. Here, we show that B. velezensis can mobilize a substantial part of its metabolome upon the perception of Pseudomonas, as a soil-dwelling competitor. This metabolite response reflects a multimodal defensive strategy as it includes polyketides and the bacteriocin amylocyclicin, with broad antibiotic activity, as well as surfactin lipopeptides, contributing to biofilm formation and enhanced motility. Furthermore, we identified the secondary Pseudomonas siderophore pyochelin as an info-chemical, which triggers this response via a mechanism independent of iron stress. We hypothesize that B. velezensis relies on such chelator sensing to accurately identify competitors, illustrating a new facet of siderophore-mediated interactions beyond the concept of competition for iron and siderophore piracy. Electrochemical exfoliation is an efficient and scalable method to obtain liquid-phase graphene. Graphene in solution, obtained through electrochemical exfoliation or other methods, is typically polydisperse, containing particles of various sizes, which is not optimal for applications. We employed cascade centrifugation to select specific particle sizes in solution and prepared thin films from those graphene particles using the Langmuir-Blodgett assembly. Employing centrifugation speeds of 3, 4, and 5 krpm, further diluting the solutions in different volumes of solvent, we reliably and consistently obtained films of tunable thickness. We show that there is a limit to how thin these films can be, which is imposed by the percolation threshold. The percolation threshold is quantitatively compared to results found in literature that are obtained using other, more complex graphene film fabrication methods, and is found to occur with a percolation exponent and percolative figure of merit that are of the same order as results in literature. A maximum optical transparency of 82.4% at a wavelength of 660 nm is obtained for these films, which is in agreement with earlier works on Langmuir-Blodgett assembled ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliated graphene. Our work demonstrates that films that are in all respects on par with films of graphene obtained through other solution-based processes can be produced from inexpensive and widely available centrifugal post-processing of existing commercially available solutions of electrochemically exfoliated graphene. Some Bacillus species, such as B. velezensis, are important members of the plant-associated microbiome, conferring protection against phytopathogens. However, our knowledge about multitrophic interactions determining the ecological fitness of these biocontrol bacteria in the competitive rhizosphere niche is still limited. Here, we investigated molecular mechanisms underlying interactions between B. velezensis and Pseudomonas as a soil-dwelling competitor. Upon their contact-independent in vitro confrontation, a multifaceted macroscopic outcome was observed and characterized by Bacillus growth inhibition, white line formation in the interaction zone, and enhanced motility. We correlated these phenotypes with the production of bioactive secondary metabolites and identified specific lipopeptides as key compounds involved in the interference interaction and motile response. Bacillus mobilizes its lipopeptide surfactin not only to enhance motility but also to act as a chemical trap to reduce the toxicity of lipopeptides formed by Pseudomonas. We demonstrated the relevance of these unsuspected roles of lipopeptides in the context of competitive tomato root colonization by the two bacterial genera. IMPORTANCE Plant-associated Bacillus velezensis and Pseudomonas spp. represent excellent model species as strong producers of bioactive metabolites involved in phytopathogen inhibition and the elicitation of plant immunity. However, the ecological role of these metabolites during microbial interspecies interactions and the way their expression may be modulated under naturally competitive soil conditions has been poorly investigated. Through this work, we report various phenotypic outcomes from the interactions between B. velezensis and 10 Pseudomonas strains used as competitors and correlate them with the production of specific metabolites called lipopeptides from both species. More precisely, Bacillus overproduces surfactin to enhance motility, which also, by acting as a chemical trap, reduces the toxicity of other lipopeptides formed by Pseudomonas. Based on data from interspecies competition on plant roots, we assume this would allow Bacillus to gain fitness and persistence in its natural rhizosphere niche. The discovery of new ecological functions for Bacillus and Pseudomonas secondary metabolites is crucial to rationally design compatible consortia, more efficient than single-species inoculants, to promote plant health and growth by fighting economically important pathogens in sustainable agriculture.

Humidity sensing is important to a variety of technologies and industries, ranging from environmental and industrial monitoring to medical applications. Although humidity sensors abound, few available solutions are thin, transparent, compatible with large-area sensor production and flexible, and almost none are fast enough to perform human respiration monitoring through breath detection or real-time finger proximity monitoring via skin humidity sensing. This work describes chemiresistive graphene-based humidity sensors produced in few steps with facile liquid phase exfoliation followed by Langmuir-Blodgett assembly that enables active areas of practically any size. The graphene sensors provide a unique mix of performance parameters, exhibiting resistance changes up to 10% with varying humidity, linear performance over relative humidity (RH) levels between 8% and 95%, weak response to other constituents of air, flexibility, transparency of nearly 80%, and response times of 30 ms. The fast response to humidity is shown to be useful for respiration monitoring and real-time finger proximity detection, with potential applications in flexible touchless interactive panels.

Some members of root-associated Bacillus species have been developed as biocontrol agents due to their contribution to plant protection by directly interfering with the growth of pathogens or by stimulating systemic resistance in their host. As rhizosphere-dwelling bacteria, these bacilli are surrounded and constantly interacting with other microbes via different types of communications. With this review, we provide an updated vision of the molecular and phenotypic responses of Bacillus upon sensing other rhizosphere microorganisms and/or their metabolites. We illustrate how Bacillus spp. may react by modulating the production of secondary metabolites, such as cyclic lipopeptides or polyketides. On the other hand, some developmental processes, such as biofilm formation, motility, and sporulation may also be modified upon interaction, reflecting the adaptation of Bacillus multicellular communities to microbial competitors for preserving their ecological persistence. This review also points out the limited data available and a global lack of knowledge indicating that more research is needed in order to, not only better understand the ecology of bacilli in their natural soil niche, but also to better assess and improve their promising biocontrol potential., (Copyright © 2020 Andrić, Meyer and Ongena.)

Aspiration of foreign bodies of the lower respiratory tract is the most common cause of accidental death in children under 6 years of age in the United States. The aim of the study was to actualize the problem of foreign bodies in modern society, to determine the most common types of foreign body, who and why usually aspires foreign body, whether the incidence is changing, and to define principles for optimal prevention. During our five-year study, we had 166 cases of aspiration of foreign bodies of the lower respiratory tract. The incidence is highest in children under three years of age (54.8%). Cough (94.6%) and breathing difficulties (78.9%) were the dominated symptoms. The majority of aspirated objects were grain (peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds)--29.5%. Localization of foreign bodies was mainly in the right and left main bronchus, and the most common complications were atelectasis and emphysema. All patients had undergone a rigid upper tracheobronchoscopy and foreign body was found in 80 patients (48%). There was no need to perform neither tracheotomy, nor any further surgical treatment, as for example thoracotomy, in any patient. Good education is the best prevention.

Steroidal epoxy and/or N-oxy 17-picolyl and 17-picolinylidene-androst-5-ene derivatives have been prepared using 3beta,17beta-dihydroxy-17alpha-picolyl-androst-5-ene (1), 3beta-acetoxy-17-picolinylidene-androst-5-ene (2), and 3beta-hydroxy-17-picolinylidene-androst-5-ene (3) as synthetic precursors. The compounds 2 and/or 3 were reacted with m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (MCPBA). The compounds synthesized from 2 were 17-picolinylidene-N-oxide 4, 5alpha,6alpha-epoxy and 5beta,6beta-epoxy-17-picolinylidene-N-oxide 5 and 6, and 5alpha,6alpha:17alpha,20alpha- and 5beta,6beta:17alpha,20alpha-diepoxy-N-oxide 7 and 8. Starting from compound 3, a mixture of 5alpha,6alpha-epoxy and 5beta,6beta-epoxy-17-picolinylidene 9 and 10, 5alpha,6alpha-epoxy and 5beta,6beta-epoxy-17-picolinylidene-N-oxide 11 and 12, and 5alpha,6alpha:17alpha,20alpha- and 5beta,6beta:17alpha,20alpha-diepoxy-N-oxide 13 and 14 were obtained. From compounds 15 and 18, obtained from 1 and 3 by the Oppenauer oxidation, the 4alpha,5alpha-epoxy and 4beta,5beta-epoxy derivatives 16, 17 and 20, 21 were prepared by oxidation with 30% H(2)O(2). Oxidation of 18 with MCPBA yielded only the N-oxide 19. The structures of compounds 15 and 18 were proved by the X-ray analysis. Compounds 1-6, 9, 15, 17, 18, and 21 were tested on activity against the enzyme aromatase. Antitumor activity against three tumor cell lines (human breast adenocarcinoma ER+, MCF-7, human breast adenocarcinoma ER-, MDA-MB-231, and prostate cancer PC3) was evaluated. Three tested compounds (1, 4, and 19) showed strong activity against PC3, the IC(50) values being in the range 0.55-10microM, whereas compound 17 showed strong activity against MDA-MB-231 (IC(50) 10.4microM).

Starting from dehydroepiandrosterone (1) 17-picolyl (2), 17-picolinylidene (7), 17-picolinylidene-16-one (10 and 11), and 17-picolyl-16-one (15) derivatives of androst-5-ene were synthesized in one, two, four and five steps respectively. By the Oppenauer oxidation or dehydration of 2, 7, 10, and 11 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), the corresponding A and B ring modified derivatives 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12-14 were obtained. The structure of 2 was unambiguously proved by the appropriate X-ray structural analysis. Compounds 3, 5, 9, 12-14 showed inhibitory activity against the enzyme aromatase. Antibacterial activity, toxicity to brine shrimp Artemia salina, antitumor activity against three tumor cell lines (human cervix carcinoma HeLa cells, human melanoma FemX cells, and human myelogenous leukemia K562 cells) and toxicity against peripheral blood mononuclear cells were evaluated. Three tested compounds, namely 11, 13, and 15, showed strong activity against all three cell lines, the IC(50) values being in the range of 4-10 microM.

The starting compound for synthesis of new 16,17-seco-estratriene derivatives was 3-benzyloxy-17-hydroxy-16,17-secoestra-1,3,5(10)-triene-16-nitrile (1b), obtained from estrone in several synthetic steps. 17-Tosyl, -chloro-, bromo-, and -iodo- derivatives 2b, 4b, 5b, and 6b were prepared directly from secocyanoalcohol 1b, while the 17-fluoro-derivative 3b was obtained from tosylate 2b in the reaction with tetrabutyl ammonium fluoride. The corresponding 3-hydroxy derivatives of these compounds were produced by action of hydrogen in presence of Pd/C, except the 3-hydroxy-17-iodo derivative 6a, which was obtained from 3-hydroxy-17-tosyloxy derivative 2a. All the newly synthesized compounds in biological tests on experimental animals exhibited an almost total loss of estrogenic activity, while most of them even prevented the action of endogenous estrogens. On the other hand, most of them, except compounds 3a and 6b, partially hindered the action of estradiol benzoate, behaving as moderate antagonists.

D-Homo derivatives in the androstane and estrane series, 12-19, were synthesized by a fragmentation-cyclization reaction of 16-oximino-17-hydroxy-17-substituted derivatives 3-9, or by cyclization of the corresponding D-seco derivatives 20-26. The structures were confirmed by X-ray analysis of compounds 12 and 16. Preliminary assessment of inhibitory effects of D-homo derivatives from androstane series towards aromatase, 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD), 17 alpha-hydroxylase/C17-20 lyase (P450c17) and 17 beta-HSD indicated much lower inhibitory potential compared to previously tested activity of another type of D-modified steroids, namely D-seco derivatives. Also, assessment of potential antiestrogenic activity of derivatives from estrane series showed absence of such an activity.

The title molecule, C(26)H(30)O(3), shows a novel chemical rearrangement of the substituents at position 17, i.e. an alpha-orientation of the hydroxy group and a beta-orientation of the bulky benzyl moiety. The packing arrangement consists of coils formed by O(2)...O(3) hydrogen bonds along the c axis. The compound shows complete loss of oestrogenic activity, and neither does it exhibit an antagonistic effect.

Starting from a 16-oximino derivative of 5-androstene the newly-synthesized 16-oximino-17-hydroxy-17-substituted derivatives 2-4 gave by the Beckmann fragmentation reaction the corresponding D-seco derivatives 6-9. Besides, in the case of the 17-hydroxy-17-methyl-16-oximino derivative 2, as a result of the rearrangement, the hydrolysis product 5 of the 16-oximino group with the opposite configuration at the C-17 was obtained. By the Oppenauer oxidation and/or by dehydration of 7 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ), the corresponding derivatives 12, 13, and 14 were obtained. The structures of 6 and 12 were unambiguously proved by the appropriate X-ray structural analysis. Kinetic analysis for anti-aromatase activity showed that compound 12 expressed the highest inhibition in the denucleated rat ovarian fraction in comparison to other androstene derivatives (IC(50) was 0.42 microM). In comparison to aminoglutethimide (AG) activity, it was 3.5 times lower. The inhibition was competitive, with K(i) of 0.27 microM. Introduction of additional units of unsaturation (compounds 13 and 14) in D-seco derivatives did not increase anti-aromatase activity.

The participation of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway in downregulation of testicular steroidogenesis in normal and stressed rats was investigated both in vivo and in vitro. In Leydig cells from normal animals, isosorbide dinitrate, an NO donor, decreased the human chorionic gonadotropin (CG)-stimulated and progesterone-derived androgen production. Also, the intratesticular injection of a precursor of NO, arginine (10 mg/testis), transiently decreased serum androgen levels and inhibited human CG-stimulated androgen production in acute testicular cultures. These effects were eliminated in rats cotreated with Nomega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (2 X 600 microg/each testis). Acute immobilization stress (2 h) decreased serum androgen levels and inhibited human CG-stimulated androgen production in vitro. These effects were accompanied by a significant increase in nitrite, a stable oxidation product of NO, in testicular cultures. Bilateral intratesticular injection of L-NAME prevented the stress-induced decrease of human CG-stimulated androgen production, and significantly reduced the nitrite levels. These results implicate NO in normal and stress-impaired testicular steroidogenesis.

The present study examined the effects of naloxone (N) and naltrexone-methobromide (NMB; an opioid receptor antagonist that does not cross the blood-brain barrier) on testicular steroidogenesis during acute immobilization stress (IMO; 2 h) in adult rats. Unstressed rats as well as IMO rats were treated by unilateral intratesticular injection of N (20 micrograms/testis), NMB (36 micrograms/testis), or vehicle at the beginning of and at 1 h of the IMO period. In IMO rats serum T levels were significantly reduced, while serum luteinizing hormone levels were not affected. N and NMB normalized serum T levels in IMO rats and had no effects in controls. In IMO rats the activities of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) and P450(17 alpha, lyase) were significantly reduced, while the activity of 17 beta-HSD was not affected. N and NMB antagonized the inhibitory effect of IMO on 3 beta-HSD and P450(17 alpha, lyase) but did not alter enzyme activity in freely moving rats. Acute IMO decreased basal and human chorionic gonadotropin-stimulated androgen production by hemitestis preparation, but N (10(-4) M) added directly to the incubation medium blocked the decrease and had no effect on testes from freely moving control rats. These results support the conclusion that endogenous opioid peptides are potentially important paracrine regulators of testicular steroidogenesis under stress conditions.

Total body irritation, the essential method of pretreatment of a patient for bone marrow transplantation has not yet been a routine practice in our radiotherapy centres. Basic components of total body irradiation methods are reviewed, because they should be considered as a background for the very first decision in the choice of a method and details of pretreatment of a patient facing bone marrow transplantation.
