1. Gamma/neutron classification with SiPM CLYC detectors using frequency-domain analysis for embedded real-time applications

Abstract

A method for gamma/neutron event classification based on frequency-domain analysis for mixed radiation environments is proposed. In contrast to the traditional charge comparison method for pulse-shape discrimination, which requires baseline removal and pulse alignment, our method does not need any preprocessing of the digitized data, apart from removing saturated traces in sporadic pile-up scenarios. It also features the identification of neutron events in the detector’s full energy range with a single device, from thermal neutrons to fast neutrons, including low-energy pulses, and still provides a superior figure-of-merit for classification.The proposed frequency-domain analysis consists of computing the fast Fourier transform of a triggered trace and integrating it through a simplified version of the transform magnitude components that distinguish the neutron features from those of the gamma photons. Owing to this simplification, the proposed method may be easily ported to a real-time embedded deployment based on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays or Digital Signal Processors. We target an off-the-shelf detector based on a small CLYC (Cs2LiYCl6:Ce) crystal coupled to a silicon photomultiplier with an integrated bias and preamplifier, aiming at lightweight embedded mixed radiation monitors and dosimeter applications.

Abstract

In recent years, the most powerful supercomputers have already reached megawatt power consumption levels, an important issue that challenges sustainability and shows the impossibility of maintaining this trend. To this date, the prevalent approach to supercomputing is dominated by CPUs and GPUs. Given their fixed architectures with generic instruction sets, they have been favored with lots of tools and mature workflows which led to mass adoption and further growth. However, reconfigurable hardware such as FPGAs has repeatedly proven that it offers substantial advantages over this supercomputing approach concerning performance and power consumption. In this survey, we review the most relevant works that advanced the field of heterogeneous supercomputing using FPGAs focusing on their architectural characteristics. Each work was divided into three main parts: network, hardware, and software tools. All implementations face challenges that involve all three parts. These dependencies result in compromises that designers must take into account. The advantages and limitations of each approach are discussed and compared in detail. The classification and study of the architectures illustrate the trade-offs of the solutions and help identify open problems and research lines.

Abstract

Abstract The preamplifier module is a crucial element while designing dynamic latch comparators. The traditional double tail comparator utilizes a differential pair as the preamplifier stage. The circuit is generally suffered from high power dissipation and low comparison speed. This research reports the design and implementation of a low‐offset, low‐power and high‐speed dynamic latch comparator. In this work, an enhanced differential pair amplifier is employed in the preamplifier stage, to improve the power dissipation and the comparison speed of the device. A custom latch structure with rigorous transistor sizing was implemented to avoid short circuit current and mismatch in the module. The effective trans‐conductance of the cross‐coupled transistors of the latch was therefore improved for an optimal time delay solution. The equation associated with the delay was derived and the parameters that embody the speed were identified. The design has been validated by corner analysis and post‐layout simulation results in 65 nm CMOS technology process, which reveals that the proposed circuit can operate at a higher clock frequency of 20 GHz with a low‐offset of 4.45 mV and 14.28 ps propagation delay, while dissipating only 67.8 μW power consumption from 1 V supply and exhibited lowest PDP of 0.968 fJ. Moreover, the core circuit layout occupies only 183.3 μm2.

Abstract

The increased popularity of investigations and exploits in the fields of neurological rehabilitation, human emotion recognition, and other relevant brain-computer interfaces demand the need for flexible electrophysiology data acquisition systems. Such systems often require to be multi-modal and multi-channel capable of acquiring and processing several different types of physiological signals simultaneously in realtime. Developments of modular and scalable electrophysiological data acquisition systems for experimental research enhance understanding and progress in the field. To contribute to such an endeavor, we present an open-source hardware project called High-Channel Count Electrophysiology or HiCCE, targeting to produce an easily-adaptable, cost-effective, and affordable electrophysiological acquisition system as an alternative solution for mostly available commercial tools and the current state of the art in the field. In this paper, we describe the design and validation of the entire chain of the HiCCE-128 electrophysiological data acquisition system. The system comprises of 128 independent channels capable of acquiring signal at 31.25 kHz, with 16 effective bits per channel with a measured noise level of about 3 μV. The reliability and feasibility of the implemented system have been confirmed through a series of tests and real-world applications. The modular design methodology based on the FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) standard allows the connection of the HiCCE-128 board to programmable system-on-chip carrier devices through the high-speed FMC link. The implemented architecture enables end users to add various high-response electrophysiological signal processing techniques in the field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) part of the system on chip (SoC) device on each channel in parallel according to application specification.

Abstract

A simplified correlation index is proposed to be used in real-time pulse shape recognition systems. This index is similar to the classic Pearson’s correlation coefficient, but it can be efficiently implemented in FPGA devices with far fewer logic resources and excellent performance. Numerical simulations with synthetic data and comparisons with the Pearson’s correlation show the suitability of the proposed index in applications such as the discrimination and counting of pulses with a predefined shape. Superior performance is evident in signal-to-noise ratio scenarios close to unity. FPGA implementation of Person’s method and the proposed correlation index have been successfully tested and the main results are summarized.

Abstract

In this study, we present a procedure to optimize a set of finite impulse response filter (FIR) coefficients for digital pulse-amplitude measurement. Such an optimized filter is designed using an adapted digital penalized least mean square (DPLMS) method. The effectiveness of the procedure is demonstrated using a dataset from a case study on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy based on single-photon detection and energy measurements. The energy resolutions of the Kα and Kβ lines of the Manganese energy spectrum have been improved by approximately 20%, compared to the reference values obtained by fitting individual photon pulses with the corresponding mathematical model.

Abstract

Data logging and complex algorithm implementations acting on multichannel systems with independent devices require the use of time synchronization. In the case of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) and Thick-GEM (THGEM) detectors, the biasing potential can be generated at the detector level via DC to DC converters operating at floating voltage. In this case, high voltage isolation buffers may be used to allow communication between the different channels. However, their use add non-negligible delays in the transmission channel, complicating the synchronization. Implementation of a simplified precise time protocol is presented for handling the synchronization on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) side of a Xilinx SoC Zynq ZC7Z030. The synchronization is done through a high voltage isolated bidirectional network interface built on a custom board attached to a commercial CIAA_ACC carrier. The results of the synchronization are shown through oscilloscope captures measuring the time drift over long periods of time, achieving synchronization in the order of nanoseconds.

9. An 8.72 µW Low-Noise and Wide Bandwidth FEE Design for High-Throughput Pixel-Strip (PS) Sensors

Abstract

The front-end electronics (FEE) of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is needed very low power consumption and higher readout bandwidth to match the low power requirement of its Short Strip application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) (SSA) and to handle a large number of pileup events in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A low-noise, wide bandwidth, and ultra-low power FEE for the pixel-strip sensor of the CMS has been designed and simulated in a 0.35 µm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) process. The design comprises a Charge Sensitive Amplifier (CSA) and a fast Capacitor-Resistor-Resistor-Capacitor (CR-RC) pulse shaper (PS). A compact structure of the CSA circuit has been analyzed and designed for high throughput purposes. Analytical calculations were performed to achieve at least 998 MHz gain bandwidth, and then overcome pileup issue in the High-Luminosity LHC. The spice simulations prove that the circuit can achieve 88 dB dc-gain while exhibiting up to 1 GHz gain-bandwidth product (GBP). The stability of the design was guaranteed with an 82-degree phase margin while 214 ns optimal shaping time was extracted for low-power purposes. The robustness of the design against radiations was performed and the amplitude resolution of the proposed front-end was controlled at 1.87% FWHM (full width half maximum). The circuit has been designed to handle up to 280 fC input charge pulses with 2 pF maximum sensor capacitance. In good agreement with the analytical calculations, simulations outcomes were validated by post-layout simulations results, which provided a baseline gain of 546.56 mV/MeV and 920.66 mV/MeV, respectively, for the CSA and the shaping module while the ENC (Equivalent Noise Charge) of the device was controlled at 37.6 e− at 0 pF with a noise slope of 16.32 e−/pF. Moreover, the proposed circuit dissipates very low power which is only 8.72 µW from a 3.3 V supply and the compact layout occupied just 0.0205 mm2 die area.

Abstract

Personalized health monitoring of neural signals usually results in a very large dataset, the processing and transmission of which require considerable energy, storage, and processing time. We present bioinspired electroceptive compressive sensing (BeCoS) as an approach for minimizing these penalties. It is a lightweight and reliable approach for the compression and transmission of neural signals inspired by active electroceptive sensing used by weakly electric fish. It uses a signature signal and a sensed pseudo-sparse differential signal to transmit and reconstruct the signals remotely. We have used EEG datasets to compare BeCoS with the block sparse Bayesian learning-bound optimization (BSBL-BO) technique—A popular compressive sensing technique used for low-energy wireless telemonitoring of EEG signals. We achieved average coherence, latency, compression ratio, and estimated per-epoch power values that were 35.38%, 62.85%, 53.26%, and 13 mW better than BSBL-BO, respectively, while structural similarity was only 6.295% worse. However, the original and reconstructed signals remain visually similar. BeCoS senses the signals as a derivative of a predefined signature signal resulting in a pseudo-sparse signal that significantly improves the efficiency of the monitoring process. The results show that BeCoS is a promising approach for the health monitoring of neural signals.

Abstract

Configuring and setting up a remote access laboratory for an advanced online school on fully programmable System-on-Chip (SoC) proved to be an outstanding challenge. The school, jointly organized by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), focused on SoC and its applications to nuclear and scientific instrumentation and was mainly addressed to physicists, computer scientists and engineers from developing countries. The use of e-learning tools, which some of them adopted and others developed, allowed the school participants to directly access both integrated development environment software and programmable SoC platforms. This facilitated the follow-up of all proposed exercises and the final project. During the four weeks of the training activity, we faced and overcame different technology and communication challenges, whose solutions we describe in detail together with dedicated tools and design methodology. We finally present a summary of the gained experience and an assessment of the results we achieved, addressed to those who foresee to organize similar initiatives using e-learning for advanced training with remote access to SoC platforms.

Abstract

This work reports techniques for designing an ultra-high speed dynamic latch comparator. The effective transconductance of the cross-coupled devices consisting the latch mechanism has been improved using a compact architecture, then reducing mismatch and parasitic, increasing therefore the regeneration speed. The pre-charge step of the preamplifier has been speeded-up using an enhanced differential pair amplifier based active NMOS load. Monte-Carlo analysis of the proposed circuit implemented in 65nm CMOS process, proved that the device can achieve 20GHz sampling frequency while consuming only $78\mu \mathrm{W}$ of power from 1V supply voltage. The high-speed behavior of the circuit was guaranteed with 14.28ps time delay and 4.45mV offset voltage. The compact circuit layout occupied only $133.15 \mu m^{2}$ of active area.

Abstract

This paper describes a custom made high voltage isolated bidirectional network interface for communication among FPGA devices, which are in different power domains. Preliminary performance test and measurements of noise tolerance and stability are presented. A case study of an application regarding a network of multiple single-channel power supply systems for Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors is portrayed. In order to match the specific system needs of dynamic voltage control, the network interface provides a reliable high voltage decoupling up to 2 kV with reasonable noise tolerance and data transmission rate up to 100 Mbps. The flexibility of the interface allows the implementation of different communication protocols.

Abstract

The distinction of secondary particles in extensive air showers, specifically muons and electrons, is one of the requirements to perform a good measurement of the composition of primary cosmic rays. We describe two methods for pulse shape detection and discrimination of muons and electrons implemented on FPGA. One uses an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm, the other exploits a correlation approach based on finite impulse response (FIR) filters. The novel hls4ml package is used to build the ANN inference model. Both methods were implemented and tested on Xilinx FPGA System on Chip (SoC) devices: ZU9EG Zynq UltraScale+ and ZC7Z020 Zynq. The data set used for the analysis was captured with a data acquisition system on an experimental site based on a water Cherenkov detector. A comparison of the accuracy of the detection, resources utilization and power consumption of both methods is presented. The results show an overall accuracy on particle discrimination of 96.62% for the ANN and 92.50% for the FIR-based correlation, with execution times of 848 ns and 752 ns, respectively.

Abstract

Physical implementation of asynchronous cellular automata networks has shown stably random oscillations under certain conditions. We present two simple mathematical models to describe transient and stationary regimes. The models are based on simple assumptions taking into account several aspects such as number of inputs of the cellular automata, rule balance, and technological frequency limitation. Numerical simulations reveal the possibility of chaotic dynamics of the average transition rate of the cellular automata in a stationary regime. With physical implementations on FPGA (field programmable gate array), preliminary experimental results show very good qualitative agreement with model’s prediction and numerical simulations. Several networks of interconnected 5-input asynchronous cellular automata have been successfully implemented in different FPGA devices, and we present some preliminary experimental results. This work aims at finding fundamental mechanisms of randomness such that the collective behavior of the cellular automata system does not depend on physical implementation details.

Abstract

Discrimination of secondary particles produced in extensive air showers is needed to study the composition of primary cosmic rays. High speed data acquisition and the increase in resources in modern FPGAs with the addition of a microprocessor in System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies allow to implement complex algorithms for digital signal analysis. Pulse shape Discrimination (PSD) can be carried out in real-time on the digital front-end of the detector; indeed online data analysis permits to save computational resources in post-processing and transmission bandwidth. We describe two methods for PSD, the first one based on artificial neural network (ANN) using the novel hls4ml package, and the other based on a correlation approach using finite impulse response (FIR) filters. Both methods were implemented and tested on Xilinx FPGA SoC devices ZU9EG Zynq Ultrascale+ and XC7Z020 Zynq. Data from a Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD) were acquired with a 500 Mhz, 8-bit high speed analog-to-digital converter acquisition system. Experimental results obtained with both methods are presented along with timing, accuracy and resources utilization analysis.

In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180 ∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L = 2 , M = 1 wave, of the following waves: L = 1 , 3 , 5 with M = 1 , and L = 2 with M = 2 . After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η ( ′ ) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η ( ′ ) π − center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of p recoil GJ × p beam GJ .

Abstract

A portable architectural design strategy is described for the implementation of reconfigurable virtual instrumentation based on programmable Systems-on-Chip integrating microprocessors and FPGA in the same physical device. The key role is played by a general purpose communication block as a means to efficiently separate the activities carried out in the microprocessor and in the FPGA. Both parts interact according to simple logic protocols by reading and writing data on the common memory resources of the communication block. The architecture of the proposed communication system can be easily implemented in practically any modern programmable System-on-Chip. With the proposed strategy, the porting of embedded software programs and associated FPGA designs among different device families and vendors is facilitated. A structured methodology is proposed for handling complex real-time systems based on these programmable Systems-on-Chip. We described a concrete communication block that has been successfully implemented and utilized for a quick implementation of a data acquisition system based on a Xilinx Zynq-7030 FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) and a custom FMC module with an 8-bit 500 MSPS ADC.

Abstract

Zynq-7000 devices from Xilinx has gained strong popularity in the last years. Several documents and examples about interfaces usage and how to communicate the programmable logic with the processor are available, but some of them are not properly explained and in particular, the maximum throughput is not clearly specified. With this purpose, in this work a measurement method is presented and applied over the five available interfaces, considering the most used alternatives. Tests were carried on a Zybo board, but the results can be easily used to estimate the performance of others systems setups. Special hardware features and functionality are also discussed, providing a better understanding of system performance. Related papers were studied but none of them presents comparable information as to provide a fair comparison.

Abstract

Personalized health monitoring of neural signals usually results in a very large dataset, the processing and transmission of which require considerable energy, storage, and processing time. We present bioinspired electroceptive compressive sensing (BeCoS) as an approach for minimizing these penalties. It is a lightweight and reliable approach for the compression and transmission of neural signals inspired by active electroceptive sensing used by weakly electric fish. It uses a signature signal and a sensed pseudo-sparse differential signal to transmit and reconstruct the signals remotely. We have used EEG datasets to compare BeCoS with the block sparse Bayesian learning-bound optimization (BSBL-BO) technique&mdash, A popular compressive sensing technique used for low-energy wireless telemonitoring of EEG signals. We achieved average coherence, latency, compression ratio, and estimated per-epoch power values that were 35.38%, 62.85%, 53.26%, and 13 mW better than BSBL-BO, respectively, while structural similarity was only 6.295% worse. However, the original and reconstructed signals remain visually similar. BeCoS senses the signals as a derivative of a predefined signature signal resulting in a pseudo-sparse signal that significantly improves the efficiency of the monitoring process. The results show that BeCoS is a promising approach for the health monitoring of neural signals.

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\omega$ meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Abstract

COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. Hadron identification in the momentum range between $3$ and $55 GeV/c$ is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter, RICH-1. To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 has been upgraded by replacing four MWPC-based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD-based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during the 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during the 2017 run. Abstract

The $\bar{\rm p} $ over p multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering for the first time using (anti-) protons carrying a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy, $z>0.5$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam impinging on an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2$ > 1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. The range in Bjorken-$x$ is restricted to $0.01 < x < 0.40$. Protons and antiprotons are identified in the momentum range $20 ��60$ GeV/$c$. In the whole studied $z$-region, the $\bar{\rm p}$ over p multiplicity ratio is found to be below the lower limit expected from calculations based on leading-order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Extending our earlier analysis of the K$^-$ over K$^+$ multiplicity ratio by including now events with larger virtual-photon energies, this ratio becomes closer to the expectation of next-to-leading order pQCD. The results of both analyses strengthen our earlier conclusion that the phase space available for hadronisation should be taken into account in the pQCD formalism., 19 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The requirements posed to high voltage power supply systems by the operation of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors are specific in terms of high resolution diagnostic features and intelligent dynamic voltage control. These requirements are needed both when technology development is performed and when extended detector systems are supplied and monitored. Systems satisfying all the needed features are not commercially available. A single channel high voltage system matching the Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector needs has been designed and realized, including its hardware and software components. The system employs a commercial DC ∕ DC converter and is coupled to a custom high resolution ammeter. Local intelligence, flexibility and high speed inter-connectivity are provided by a System on Chip Board and the use of a powerful FPGA. The single channel system has been developed, as critical milestone towards the realization of a multi-channel system. The design, implementation and performance of the system are reported in detail in this article, as well as the performance of the single channel power supply when connected to a Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector in realistic working condition during a test beam exercise.

Abstract

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall below the lower limits expected from calculations based on leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Also, the kaon multiplicity ratio shows a strong dependence on the missing mass of the single-kaon production process. This suggests that within the perturbative quantum chromodynamics formalism an additional correction may be required, which takes into account the phase space available for hadronisation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cos\phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measured final-state hadrons in those SIDIS experiments receive a contribution from exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons, particularly important at large values of $z$, the fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron. In previous measurements of azimuthal asymmetries this contribution was not taken into account, because it was not known that it could distort the azimuthal modulations. Presently, a method to evaluate the contribution of the exclusive reactions to the azimuthal asymmetries measured by COMPASS has been developed. The subtraction of this contribution results in a better understanding of the kinematic effects, and the remaining non-zero $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulation gives indication for a non-zero Boer-Mulders effect., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Digital controlled oscillator (DCO) is becoming an attractive replacement over the voltage control oscillator (VCO) with the advances of digital intensive research on all-digital phase locked-loop (ADPLL) in complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technology. This paper presents a review of various CMOS DCO schemes implemented in ADPLL and relationship between the DCO parameters with ADPLL performance. The DCO architecture evaluated through its power consumption, speed, chip area, frequency range, supply voltage, portability and resolution. It can be concluded that even though there are various schemes of DCO that have been implemented for ADPLL, the selection of the DCO is frequently based on the ADPLL applications and the complexity of the scheme. The demand for the low power dissipation and high resolution DCO in CMOS technology shall remain a challenging and active area of research for years to come. Thus, this review shall work as a guideline for the researchers who wish to work on all digital PLL.

Abstract

We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction μ + N → μ + ( J / ψ π + π − ) π ± N ′ using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c momentum. In the J / ψ π + π − mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 σ. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the X ( 3872 ) . The shape of the π + π − mass distribution from the observed decay into J / ψ π + π − shows disagreement with previous observations for X ( 3872 ) . The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of X ( 3872 ) with C = − 1 predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into J / ψ π + π − is determined to be 71±28(stat)±39(syst) pb.

Abstract

We present a precise measurement of the proton longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A 1 p and the proton spin-dependent structure function g 1 p at photon virtualities 0.006 ( GeV / c ) 2 Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 in the Bjorken x range of 4 × 10 − 5 x 4 × 10 − 2 . The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of 160 GeV and 200 GeV . The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of x , the measured values of A 1 p and g 1 p are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of x .

Abstract

We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Application in the Middle East) is a “third-generation” synchrotron light source. The Middle East’s first major international research centre, established as cooperative venture by the scientists and governments of the region, is situated in Jordan. On the basis of the agreement signed between INFN and SESAME, our collaboration has designed and is building a Fluorescence Detector System based on 64 SDDs, each having a 9 mm 2 non-collimated sensitive area, realized with eight monolithic arrays for a total collimated sensitive area of 499 mm 2 . The instrument will be used at the beamline dedicated to x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the energy range 3–30 keV with the capability of reaching a maximum counting rate of at least 3.2 Mcps. The energy resolution required for this application is below 150 eV FWHM @5.9 keV. We plan to have the system completely operative by July 2018. We report on the main building blocks of this system, dedicated to SESAME, and describe the experimental performances measured in the lab and on the XAFS beamline of ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy. In the very first tests the system was successfully operated up to 8 Mcounts/s. The energy resolution below 150 eV @5.9 keV was measured using a 1 . 6 μ s peaking time with the detector cooled to 10 °C.
