No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 In this study, we investigated the phenolic and antioxidant content, cytotoxic, and anticholinesterase activities of flower extracts of Senna spectabilis var. excelsa and Senna macranthera. The antioxidant activities performed by the DPPH and ABTS methods showed that the extracts possess good antioxidant activity, with emphasis on the S. macranthera extract, which obtained results very similar to the rutin pattern. In the evaluation of the cytotoxic activity, the species S. spectabilis var. excelsa presented expressive cytotoxicity against the cellular lines PC3 and HL60 with IC50 values 21.08 and 31.37 μg mL−1, respectively. The results of anticholinesterase activity showed that both the plants induced enzyme inhibition, reaching 14 mm of inhibition in the case of S. spectabilis var. excelsa. The good results obtained in this work may be related to the presence of compounds such as apigenin-7-apioglucoside, quercetin 3,4'-diglucoside, cassine and spectaline identified in the extracts in our previous work. Two steroids (

Two steroids (1 and 2), two oxepin derivatives (3 and 4) and seven flavonoids (5–11) were isolated from the stems of Bauhinia pentandra. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data, and by comparison with data previously reported in the literature. The ethanol extract from the stems of B. pentandra and the compounds, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 have been evaluated as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and among these, the compound 5 exhibited the strongest activity. In addition, all the isolated compounds are reported for the first time as constituents of B. pentandra.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of three neglected tropical diseases: dengue, zika and chikungunya. Dengue is under surveillance by health organizations worldwide due to the risk of epidemics. Since there is no specific treatment for dengue, most studies have focused on preventing the reproduction and/or development of the mosquitoes. We studied the larvicidal activity of five phosphates and phosphorothioates derived from cardol, one of the four main components of cashew nut shell liquid (Anacardium occidentale L.), at different concentrations. The organophosphorothioate derivatives were tested for their in vitro inhibitory potential against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). One compound, Cdl.i-dPS (median lethal concentration (LC50) = 0.8 ppm), was four times more efficient compared to an important commercial larvicide, Temephos (LC50 = 3.2 ppm), and showed greater AChE inhibition than its monosubstituted analogue and Temephos.

Mangiferin-loaded F127/PEG micellar systems were evaluated regarding the effect of PEG addition at different molecular weights, where the system with best mangiferin solubility response (0.5 wt% of PEG in 1 wt% F127 aqueous solution) was chosen to be a potential drug delivery system (DDS), which solubilized 7.92 mg dL−1 of mangiferin. Subsequently, the chosen mangiferin-loaded DDS was evaluated in regard the inhibition of enzyme α-glucosidase, which showed a more effective inhibition, around 95.42%, when compared to the standard acarbose (92.59%) and to the free-form mangiferin (90.42%). The same micellar system was also evaluated for its cytotoxicity, where no significative values of LDH activity was observed. No study has been done yet with both mangiferin and DDSs regarding in vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. This work proposes a “new” alternative towards diabetes treatment.
