Abstract: This work aims to characterize phase change materials (PCM) for thermal energy storage in buildings (thermal comfort). Fatty acids, biobased organic PCM, are attractive candidates for integration into active or passive storage systems for targeted application. Three pure fatty acids (capric, myristic and palmitic acids) and two eutectic mixtures (capric-myristic and capric-palmitic acids) are studied in this paper. Although the main storage properties of pure fatty acids have already been investigated and reported in the literature, the information available on the eutectic mixtures is very limited (only melting temperature and enthalpy). This paper presents a complete experimental characterization of these pure and mixed fatty acids, including measurements of their main thermophysical properties (melting temperature and enthalpy, specific heats and densities in solid and liquid states, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity as well as viscosity) and the properties of interest regarding the system integrating the PCM (energy density, volume expansion). The storage performances of the studied mixtures are also compared to those of most commonly used PCM (salt hydrates and paraffins). Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate an ultrafast mid-infrared source architecture that implements both intrapulse difference frequency generation (iDFG) and further optical parametric amplification (OPA), in an all-inline configuration. The source is driven by a nonlinearly compressed high-energy Yb-doped-fiber amplifier delivering 7.4 fs pulses at a central wavelength of 1030 nm, at a repetition rate of 250 kHz. It delivers 1 µJ, 73 fs pulses at a central wavelength of 8 µm, tunable over more than one octave. By enrolling all the pump photons in the iDFG process and recycling the long wavelength pump photons amplified in the iDFG in the subsequent OPA, we obtain an unprecedented overall optical efficiency of 2%. These performances, combining high energy and repetition rate in a very simple all-inline setup, make this technique ideally suited for a growing number of applications, such as high harmonic generation in solids or two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy experiments.

Abstract: International audience; Gas-filled multipass cells are an appealing alternative to capillaries to implement nonlinear temporal compression of high energy femtosecond lasers. Here, we provide an analytic expression for stationary beam coupling to multipass cells that takes into account nonlinear propagation. This allows a constant beam size on the mirrors and at the cell waist, thereby making the optical design more accurate, for example to avoid optical damage or significant ionization. The analysis is validated using spatio-temporal numerical simulations of the propagation in a near-concentric configuration. This is particularly important for multipass cells that are operated in a highly nonlinear regime, which is the current trend since it allows a lower number of roundtrips, relaxing the constraint on mirror coatings performance.

Abstract: T790M mutations inEGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) account for nearly 50% of acquired resistance mechanisms to EGFR-TKIs. Earlier studies suggested that tumor T790M could also be detected in TKI-naïve EGFR-mutated NSCLC. The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence and clinical significance of quantification of tumor pre-treatment T790M subclones.We analyzed 366 EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients of the real-life IFCT Biomarkers France study with available pre-treatment formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor DNA before treatment by first/second-generation EGFR-TKI. We used ultra-sensitive Droplet Digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (ddPCR) QX200 (BIO-RAD®, Hercules, CA, USA). All samples were tested in duplicate.ddPCR identified T790M in 19/240 specimens (8%). T790M-positive and T790M-negative populations were not different for clinical baseline characteristics. T790M Variant Allele Frequency (VAF) was 0.01% 0.1%, 0.1% 1%, 1% 10%, and10% in five (26.3%), six (31.6%), six (31.6%), and two (10.5%) patients, respectively. T790M VAF was0.1% in 11/13 (84%) patients with rapid (3 months) or usual progression (3-20 months) compared to 0/3 with low progression (20 months) (p = 0.02). In a Cox model, T790M mutation positivity was correlated with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) for 10%VAF1% (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-7.07, p = 0.03; HR=3.62, 95%CI 1.43-4.92, p = 0.007, respectively) and for VAF10% (HR = 19.14, 95%CI 4.35-84.26, p 0.001; HR = 17.89, 95%CI 2.21-144.86, p = 0.007, respectively).Ultra-sensitive detection of tumor T790M mutation concerned 8% of EGFR-mutated TKI-naïve NSCLC patients and has a negative prognostic value only for T790M VAF over 1%.

Abstract: We present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach for scaling the peak power of mid-infrared laser pulses with few-cycle duration and carrier-to-envelope phase stabilization. Using frequency domain optical parametric amplification (FOPA), selective amplification is performed on two spectral slices of broadband pulses centered at 1.8 µm wavelength. In addition to amplification, the Fourier plane is used for specific pulse shaping to control both the relative polarization and the phase/delay between the two spectral slices of the input pulses. At the output of the FOPA, intrapulse difference frequency generation provides carrier–envelope phase stabilized two-cycle pulses centered at 9.5 µm wavelength with 25.5 µJ pulse energy. The control of the carrier–envelope phase is demonstrated through the dependence of high-harmonic generation in solids. This architecture is perfectly adapted to be scaled in the future to high average and high peak powers using picosecond ytterbium laser technologies.

Abstract: We show how a rigid patterned SU-8 thin film in tandem with the mechanical Poisson effect can be used beneficially to enable robust metallization on stretchable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Two generic planar processes used to form a thin, mechanically-robust strain-shielding photoresist on a soft substrate are developed to demonstrate these ideas. The first process is a self-aligned metallization of photolithographically patterned SU-8 features on PDMS. The second process is a fully photolithographic lift-off metallization of pre-patterned SU-8 features on PDMS. In both cases, the SU-8 has a sub-micrometre thickness (~800 nm)?supporting a thermally evaporated Ti/Au (5 nm/50 nm) thin film metallization. The resulting samples were characterized electromechanically?the results demonstrate that the electrical continuity of metal lines (width = 150 ?m and length up to 1 cm) is maintained up to ~70% strain between the lines. The electrical resistance of such lines remains relatively stable: 35 ? at zero-strain and 63 ? at 69% average interline strain. The electrical resistivity of the evaporated gold is near to that of pure gold, and remains so even at high strains (49 n? m at 10% and 70 n? m at 41%)?this proves the absence strain-induced micro-cracking of the metal lines. Although a specific evaporated metal combination is used here to demonstrate a working prototype system, in principle, any thin-film material, which can be deposited by microfabrication, e.g. insulators, semiconductors..., could be integrated into the generic processes. The basic lithographic processes expounded here are also potentially extendible to encompass the integration of other microfabrication techniques, e.g. soft lithography, contact printing..., enabling more complex flexible systems to be envisaged and realized.

Abstract: International audience; A 10 mm long PPLN crystal pumped by 125 nJ, 250 fs pulses centered at 1035 nm yielded by Yb3+ femtosecond fiber oscillator generates femtosecond signal and idler pulses tunable in the 1.35 µm-1.65 µm and 2.6 µm-4.2 µm spectral ranges. A numerical model accounting for both second-and third-order nonlinear processes well agree with the recorded signal conversion efficiency (up to 42%), the spectral and temporal profile of the generated pulses. Pulse to pulse stability is drastically improved injecting this compact and versatile device with a continuum generated in a photonic fiber. Further improvements are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Starting from a femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier, we demonstrate the generation of near Fourier transform-limited high peak power picosecond pulses through spectral compression in a nonlinear solid-state-based multipass cell. Input 260 fs pulses negatively chirped to 2.4 ps are spectrally compressed from 6 nm down to 1.1 nm, with an output energy of 13.5 µJ and near transform-limited pulses of 2.1 ps. A pulse shaper included in the femtosecond source provides some control over the output spectral shape, in particular its symmetry. The spatial quality and spatio-spectral homogeneity are conserved in this process. These results show that the use of multipass cells allows energy scaling of spectral compression setups while maintaining the spatial properties of the laser beam.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the spatio-spectral properties of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) high harmonic radiation driven by high repetition rate femtosecond laser systems. In the spatio-spectral domain, ring-shaped structures at each harmonic order associated with long-trajectory electrons are found to form arrow-shaped structures at the cutoff. These structures are observed with two different laser systems: an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier system at a central wavelength of 1.55 μm and 125 kHz repetition rate, and a temporally compressed femtosecond ytterbium fiber amplifier at 1.03 μm wavelength and 100 kHz repetition rate. As recently pointed out, the observed structures are well explained by considering the space–time atomic dipole-induced phase for short and long electron trajectories in the generation plane. The tighter focusing geometry and longer wavelength associated with these emerging driving laser systems increase the ring-like divergence and spectral broadening for high harmonics. Cutoff energies and photon fluxes obtained in argon and neon are also reported. Overall, these results shed new light on the properties of XUV radiation driven by these recently developed high average power laser systems, paving the way to high photon-flux XUV beamlines.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the spatio-spectral properties of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) high harmonic radiation driven by high repetition rate femtosecond laser systems. In the spatio-spectral domain, ring-shaped structures at each harmonic order associated with long-trajectory electrons are found to form arrow-shaped structures at the cutoff. These structures are observed with two different laser systems: an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier system at a central wavelength of 1.55 μm and 125 kHz repetition rate, and a temporally compressed femtosecond ytterbium fiber amplifier at 1.03 μm wavelength and 100 kHz repetition rate. As recently pointed out, the observed structures are well explained by considering the space–time atomic dipole-induced phase for short and long electron trajectories in the generation plane. The tighter focusing geometry and longer wavelength associated with these emerging driving laser systems increase the ring-like divergence and spectral broadening for high harmonics. Cutoff energies and photon fluxes obtained in argon and neon are also reported. Overall, these results shed new light on the properties of XUV radiation driven by these recently developed high average power laser systems, paving the way to high photon-flux XUV beamlines.

Abstract: We report on the advantage of Yb-lasers at high repetition rate (>100kHz) to drive a XUV source based on high harmonic generation (HHG). The XUV source is based on a tight focusing configuration with high atomic density at the gas jet target. The XUV beamline has been optimized to be driven in three modalities. (1) directly with the output of an industrial Yb-laser with 350 fs pulse duration, (2) after post-compression down to 30 fs and (3) with the Yb-laser and post-compression to few cycle. We discuss how different XUV parameters can be optimized with each laser configuration. We study the improvement of the spectral width of harmonic lines respect to the pulse duration, useful for spectroscopy experiments. We present the increase of the cutoff photon energy with short pulses. We achieved up to 150 eV with a photon flux of up to 1.4×1012 photons/s/eV by using few cycle post-compressed pulses (14 fs).

Abstract: International audience; High-power ultra-low noise single-mode single-frequency lasers are in great demand for interferometric metrology. Robust, compact all-fiber lasers represent one of the most promising technologies to replace the current laser sources in use based on injection-locked ring resonators or multi-stage solid-state amplifiers. Here, a linearly-polarized high-power ultra-low noise all-fiber laser is demonstrated at a power level of 100 W. Special care has been taken in the study of relative intensity noise (RIN) and its reduction. Using an optimized servo actuator to directly control the driving current of the pump laser diode (LD), we obtain a large feedback bandwidth of up to 1.3 MHz. The RIN reaches-160 dBc/Hz between 3 kHz and 20 kHz.

Abstract: International audience; —We present a numerical and experimental analysis of a nonlinear architecture to overcome the gain bandwidth limitation in regenerative amplifiers. This technique is based on the optimization of dispersion and nonlinear effects during the amplification process to obtain broad-bandwidth pulses that can be compressed to short durations with high temporal quality. We demonstrate the advantage of this method to maintain an excellent temporal quality of pulses even at high levels of optical nonlinearity. The technique has been applied to regenerative amplifiers using Yb:YAG, Yb:KYW, and Yb:CALGO crystals as gain media. In all cases we achieved the shortest pulse duration ever obtained from regenerative amplifiers using the respective laser crystals. These results underline the benefits of this amplification technique with respect to current state of the art.

Abstract: International audience; A simple, compact, and efficient few-cycle laser source at a central wavelength of 1 µm is presented. The system is based on a high-energy femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier delivering 130 fs, 250 µJ pulses at 200 kHz, corresponding to 1.5 GW of peak power and an average power of 50 W. The unprecedented short pulse duration at the output of this system is obtained by use of spectral intensity and phase shaping, allowing for both gain narrowing mitigation and the compensation of the nonlinear accumulated spectral phase. This laser source is followed by a single-stage of nonlinear compression in a xenon-filled capillary, allowing for the generation of 14 fs, 120 µJ pulses at 200 kHz resulting in 24 W of average power. High-harmonic generation driven by this type of source will trigger numerous new applications in the XUV range and attosecond science.

Abstract: International audience; The use of multipass cells as a way to spatially homogenize self-phase modulation and distribute its accumulation over the propagation distance is analyzed in detail, with the aim to perform nonlinear temporal compression. In addition to the insertion of nonlinear media at specific locations in the cell, as already demonstrated, we also propose to fill the cell with a noble gas, as is done in hollow capillary-based setups. This makes the accumulation of B-integral continuous rather than discrete. In this case, analytical estimates for the B-integral per round trip and scaling rules are provided as a function of cavity geometry and gas parameters. Then, three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to assess the spatiotemporal couplings in the output beam in various conditions. This model is checked against experimental data presented in the literature, and used to predict our proposed scheme performance. We believe that these techniques constitute a promising way to allow temporal compression at energy levels beyond 10 mJ, where capillary-based setups are difficult to implement.

Abstract: We describe an optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) architecture built around a state of the art Yb-doped fiber femtosecond pump source delivering 300 fs 400 μ pulses at a repetition rate 125 kHz (50 W average power) and a central wavelength of 1030 nm. The short pump pulse duration compared to bulk Yb:YAG or Nd:YVO4 based systems results in a number of important advantages. First, it allows efficient seeding at 1550 nm using supercontinuum generation directly from the pump pulses in a bulk YAG crystal, resulting in extremely robust passive pump-signal synchronization. The short pump pulse duration also allows the use of millimeter to centimeter lengths of bulk materials to provide stretching and compression for the signal and idler, which minimizes the accumulation of higher-order spectral phase. Finally, the shorter pump pulse duration increases the damage peak intensity, permitting the use of shorter nonlinear crystals to perform the amplification, which increases the spectral bandwidth of the parametric process. Additional experiments are performed to sort out the phenomena that limit power scaling in MgO:PPLN crystals. The OPCPA stages are all operated in collinear geometry, allowing the use of both signal and idler without the introduction of angular chirp on the latter. These points result in the dual generation of 70 fs 23 μJ signal pulses at 1550 nm and 60 fs 10 μJ idler pulses at 3070 nm from a simple setup, with the added benefit of inherent CEP stability of the idler pulses.

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate the advantage of combining non-diffractive beam shapes and femtosecond bursts for volume laser processing of transparent materials. By redistribution of the single laser pulse energy into several sub-pulses with 25 ns time delay, the energy deposition in the material can be enhanced significantly. Our combined experimental and theoretical analysis shows that in burst-mode detrimental defocusing by the laser generated plasma is reduced, and the non-diffractive beam shape prevails. At the same time, heat accumulation during the interaction with the burst leads to temperatures high enough to induce material melting and even in-volume cracks. In an exemplary case study, we demonstrate that the formation of these cracks can be controlled to allow high-speed and high-quality glass cutting.

Abstract: Numerical simulations are performed to analyze effects that limit the combining efficiency in divided-pulse amplification setups. The model allows us to evaluate the impact of self- and cross-phase modulation between pulse replicas, Kramers-Kronig-related phase shifts, and inter- and intra-replica saturation effects. In particular, we show that when the energy per replica approaches the saturation energy, pulse reshaping induced by the gain saturation coupled with self-phase modulation imparts a temporal differential phase that decreases the combining efficiency. This effect limits the energy that can be extracted by a single replica, thereby providing design rules to scale the performances of short pulse laser sources using this technique.

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate self-compression of short-wavelength in-frared pulses in a multipass cell (MPC) containing a plate of silica. Nonlinear propagation in the cell in the anomalous dispersion regime results in the generation of 14 μJ 22 fs pulses at 125 kHz repetition rate and 1550 nm wavelength. Periodic focusing inside the cell allows us to circumvent catastrophic self-focusing, despite an output peak power of 440 MW well beyond the critical power in silica of 10 MW. This technique allows straightforward energy scaling of self-compression setups and control over the spatial manifestation of Kerr nonlinearity. More generally, MPCs can be used to perform, at higher energy levels, temporal manipulations of pulses that have been previously demonstrated in waveguides. Ultrafast lasers have allowed a plethora of applications, ranging from industrial processing to a large number of scientific advances such as multiphoton imaging, ultrafast dynamics studies, and strong field physics. In the short-wavelength infra-red (SWIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength ranges, applications such as high-harmonic generation in gases [1], solids [2], and multidimensional molecular spectroscopy [3] are pushing the development of high-power microjoule-millijoule laser systems with pulse durations in the few-cycle regime. In this wavelength range, the most widespread sources of ultrashort pulses are optical parametric chirped pulse amplifiers (OPCPAs) that readily deliver pulses with sub-100 fs durations at high repetition rates [4-8]. Access to shorter pulse durations is often allowed by implementing a nonlinear compression setup at the output of the laser system. Propagation of the pulse in a solid or gas material induces spectral broadening through self-phase modulation (SPM), corresponding to a shorter Fourier-transform limited pulse. For sources in the near-infrared, where material dispersion is normal, additional negative dispersion must be added after the SPM stage [9]. For sources in the SWIR and MIR, most optical materials exhibit anomalous dispersion, and soliton dynamics results in compression in the initial stage of propagation. Although self-compression can be performed in gaseous [10] and bulk solid [11] media, these experiments often show low energy transfer to the compressed pulse and more difficult experimental control because of the complex spatio-temporal dynamics. Alternatively, the use of a waveguide allows large interaction lengths and negates the spatial Kerr effect, resulting in efficient and well-controlled setups. Energy scaling in waveguides is challenging, requiring, for instance, the use of gas-filled anti-resonant photonic crystal fiber designs to increase the critical power for self-focusing, ensure low losses, and induce anomalous dispersion [12]. Recently, a concept allowing the use of a bulk nonlinear medium while retaining the advantages of waveguides has emerged [13]. It consists of placing the nonlinear medium inside a multipass cell (MPC) and accumulating the nonlinearity over a large number of passes, so that nonlinear propagation in the medium can be seen as a small perturbation to free-space propagation as far as spatial effects are concerned. This can be compared to waveguides where spatial nonlinear effects change slightly the mode structure [14] without significant physical impact. It can also be considered as an extension of multi-plate setups [15-17] with a distribution of the nonlinearity over tens of passes in the material instead of a few. Although it was proposed as early as 2000 [18], it is only recently that this idea has been demonstrated [13]. The concept was first implemented with a solid nonlinear medium [13,19,20], where it was shown that the peak power can exceed the critical power in the medium without affecting the spatial profile at the output. The MPC idea was then used with a gas medium [21,22], at higher energy levels of 140 μJ and 2 mJ, respectively. These demonstrations have all been done in setups where the net dispersion in the MPC was either negligible or slightly normal, resulting in an essentially stationary temporal profile during propagation and necessitating negative dispersion at the output to compress the pulse. Here we report the use of an MPC in net anomalous dispersion regime to take advantage of soliton dynamics and self-compress 19 μJ 63 fs pulses generated by an OPCPA at 1.55 μm down to a 22 fs pulse duration with a transmission of 73%. The experimental data are compared to a 3D numerical model, and the output beam is characterized in terms of spatio-spectral couplings. Abstract: The development of laser sources delivering femtosecond pulses at high repetition rate is one of the main axe of reaserch of these 10 past years and is a key for many industrial and scientific applications. In one hand, fiber lasers allow to reach high average power sources, but the strong confinment of the light leads to high nonlinearities limiting output pulse energy. In the other hand, bulk amplifiers cannot provide as short pulse duration as fiber lasers because of crystals spectroscopic properties. However they can reach higher energy. Usually nonlinear effects are deletarious and limit output temporal pulse quality. A technic to tailor and exploid positively these nonlinearities in order to obtain shorter pulses together with high pulse energy in bulk regenerative amplifier is presented in this thesis.Negative dispersion managment prior amplification permits to precompensate the amplifier positive dispersion together with the accumulated nonlinear phase aquired during amplification. In order to deliver ultrashort pulses with an excellent temporal quality theoritical studies have been carried out to optimise the paramaters. By considering dispersion, nonlinearities and limited gain bandwidth, we could demonstrated sub-100 fs pulses with a peak power of hundreds of MW. These results established new pulse duration record in high gain (50 dB) bulk amplifiers.Another study allowed to design new amplifier geometries for power scaling. This has been done by using slab crystal geometry to improved heat dissipation. More than 60W average power has been demonstrated, highlighting the potential of such architecture for high power lasers. We also studied limitations of such design, especially thermal degradation effects, which are one of the main issues of high power bulk amplifier.5 articles have been written thanks to these theoritical and experimental results and have been presented in 10 conferences. As industrial results Amplitude Systemes has lunched into market two new lines of products: a compact and all integrated laser and a TANGOR 100 W.; Le développement de sources laser générant des impulsions femtoseconde à très haut taux de répétition est l'un des axes de recherche les plus porteur de ces 10 dernières années, et ouvre la voie pour de nombreuses applications industrielles et scientifiques. Les lasers à fibres permettent d'obtenir des sources de forte puissance moyenne, mais le fort confinement de la lumière générant de fortes non-linéarités, limite l'énergie des impulsions de sortie. Les amplificateurs à cristaux quant à eux, ne permettent généralement pas d'obtenir des impulsions aussi courtes que dans les lasers à fibres principalement à cause des propriétés spectroscopiques des cristaux, mais cependant ils permettent d'obtenir des énergies bien plus élevées. La post-compression par effets non-linéaires est une des solutions permettant de réduire la durée de ces impulsions. Cependant, les non-linéarités sont généralement préjudiciables, et limitent les performances des lasers (principalement en terme de qualité temporelle des impulsions). Une technique mise en oeuvre pour contrôler et exploiter positivement ces non-linéarités afin d'obtenir des impulsions courtes et de bonne qualité, tout en atteignant des énergies élevées dans les amplificateurs régénératifs à cristaux, est présentée dans cette thèse.L'application d'un étirement négatif à l'impulsion avant amplification, permet de compenser dans certaines conditions, la dispersion positive des composants de l'amplificateur ainsi que la phase non-linéaire accumulée durant l'amplification . Nous avons donc étudié théoriquement et expérimentalement les différents régimes d'amplification non-linéaire, afin de trouver les paramètres optimaux. Ceci à permis de démontrer des impulsions ultracourtes et d'excellentes qualités temporelles même avec de fortes intégrales B. En considérant le couplage de la dispersion et des effets non-linéaires, ainsi que la bande de gain des milieux à gain, nous avons pu générer des impulsions sub-100 fs pour des puissances crêtes de plusieurs centaines de MW. Ces résultats obtenus dans des amplificateurs à très fort gain (50 dB) nous ont permis d'établir de nouveaux records de durées pour ce type d'architectures.Une autre étude sur la montée en puissance a permis de dimensionner une nouvelle gamme d'amplificateurs à cristaux, exploitant la géométrie pavé (usuellement appelée "slab") pour optimiser l'évacuation thermique. Une source de plus de 60 W a été réalisée, démontrant le potentiel de montée en puissance de ce type d'amplificateurs. Nous avons également mis en évidence les limites de cette architecture, en montrant des dégradations spatiales liées aux effets thermiques, problèmes majeurs lors de la montée en puissance.5 articles ont été rédigés grâce à ces résultats théoriques et expérimentaux. Ces travaux ont été présentés dans dix conférences. Enfin, ils ont permis à la société Amplitude Systèmes de procéder à la mise sur le marché de deux nouvelles gammes de produits : un laser compact et intégré et le TANGOR 100 W.

Abstract: International audience; A hybrid-system approach using a low-gain Yb:YAG single crystal booster amplifier behind a state-of-the-art industrial high-power femtosecond fiber system is studied to significantly increase the output pulse energy of the fiber amplifier. With this system, more than 60 W of average power is demonstrated at 100 kHz for pulse duration of 400 fs, corresponding to an energy per pulse of 600 µJ. Reducing the repetition rate, the energy is increased up to 2.5 mJ (before compression), which corresponds to the limitation due to laser damage threshold of the optical coatings. To scale further the energy, passive divided-pulse amplification is then implemented at the entrance of the bulk amplifier. Using this geometry, a safe nominal operating point is presented with output pulse energies of 3 mJ before and 2.3 mJ after compression and with a pulse duration of 520 fs, corresponding to a peak power of 4.4 GW.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the characterization and long-term compensation of additive timing jitter introduced by a femtosecond ytterbium regenerative amplifier with a 100 kHz repetition rate. A balanced optical cross-correlation technique is used to generate a jitter error signal. This approach is well suited to characterize the additive timing jitter of Yb amplifiers seeded by narrow spectrum Yb oscillators. The balanced optical cross-correlator is in a noncollinear configuration allowing a background free coindence detection. This setup enables the measurement of additive timing jitter from the amplifier, with a noise floor of 300 as integrated from 10 Hz to 10 kHz. The measured additive timing jitter level is about 5 fs, integrated from 0.1 Hz to 10 kHz. The amplifier timing drift characterization and control are performed for more than an hour.

Abstract: Optical fiber-based ultrafast laser sources are nowadays used in numerous scientific and industrial applications. To extend further the number of possible applications, it is essential to improve their performances in terms of pulsewidth, energy per pulse, and average power. Extensive research work has been performed over the last years on this area. The work described in this manuscript is a contribution to these research efforts, and aims at improving ultrafast fiber laser sources by using coherent combination of several femtosecond pulses.The first part is devoted to energy scaling by using passive coherent combining architectures, that do not require a feedback control loop of the relative optical phase between pulses to be combined. This idea is used both in the space (combining beams) and time (combining replicas of the pulse at different delays) domains. We demonstrate that these techniques allow energy scaling and study their limitations related to optical nonlinearities and gain saturation in the amplifiers. We also propose ways to circumvent these limitations.In the second part, we study various ways of decreasing the output pulsewidth of fiber-amplified femtosecond sources. First, we implement an active coherent combining system that performs combination of two amplified femtosecond pulses with different, shifted spectral content. This allows the synthesis of a pulse that is shorter than any of the individual pulses to be combined. Another studied approach consists in tailoring the spectrum of input pulses to precompensate the spectral gain shape of the amplifier. Finally, by using passive combining architectures described in the first part, we demonstrate energy scaling of temporal nonlinear compression setups.; Les lasers à fibre optique délivrant des impulsions femtoseconde sont aujourd'hui utilisés dans de nombreuses applications scientifiques ou industrielles. Pour étendre l'éventail de ces applications, l'augmentation des performances en termes de durée, énergie par impulsion, et puissance moyenne délivrée par ces sources a fait l'objet de nombreux développements. Ce travail a pour objectif d'utiliser l'idée de combinaison cohérente d'impulsions femtoseconde dans le but de poursuivre l'amélioration des caractéristiques des amplificateurs à fibre ultrabrefs selon deux axes.La première partie est consacrée à la montée en énergie en utilisant des architectures de combinaison cohérente passives, c'est à dire ne nécessitant pas de boucle de contrôle de la phase optique entre les impulsions à combiner. Ces systèmes exploitent à la fois le domaine spatial, (combinaison de faisceaux) et le domaine temporel (combinaison de répliques de l'impulsion initiale décalées dans le temps). Nous démontrons que ces techniques permettent effectivement la montée en énergie, et étudions les limites de leur utilisation liées aux non-linéarités optiques et à la saturation du gain des amplificateurs. Nous proposons également des perspectives pour outrepasser ces limites.La deuxième partie du manuscrit est dédiée à la réduction de la durée des impulsion émises par ces sources à fibre. Nous utilisons dans un premier temps la combinaison cohérente active de deux impulsions femtoseconde amplifiées ayant des contenus spectraux différents et décalés. Ainsi, une impulsion plus courte que chacune des impulsions individuelles est synthétisée. Une autre approche consistant à sculpter le contenu spectral de l'impulsion à amplifier afin de compenser le profil de gain de l'amplificateur est également étudiée. Enfin, nous appliquons les architectures de combinaison cohérente passive étudiées dans la première partie à des systèmes de compression temporelle non-linéaire afin d'outrepasser leurs limites en énergie.

Different methods of achieving coherent pulse addition in space (beam combining) and time (divided pulse amplification) domains are described. These architectures can be widely classified into active methods, where the relative phases between pulses are subject to a servomechanism, and passive methods, where phase matching is inherent to the geometry. Other experiments that combine pulses with different spectral contents, pulses that have been nonlinearly broadened or successive pulses from a mode-locked laser oscillator, are then presented. All these techniques allow access to unprecedented parameter range for fiber ultrafast sources.

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate that the use of low energy but high repetition ultrashort laser systems can be advantageous for glass laser cutting using method of controlled fracture propagation. In specific regime using low numerical aperture objective, elongated zone of energy deposition induces high mechanical stress allowing single-pass full cutting of 1mm-thick soda-lime glass. The crack can follow straight as well as curve trajectories with a radius down to 1 mm with a 1mm/s feedrate. In order to achieve high quality precise control on the fracture propagation we have studied the effects of experimental parameters such as numerical aperture, repetition rate, pulse energy, pulse duration, but also regimes of irradiations by single pulses or bursts.

Abstract: We investigate the interaction of trains of femtosecond microjoule laser pulses with dielectric materials by means of a multi-scale model. Our theoretical predictions are directly confronted with experimental observations in soda-lime glass. We show that due to the low heat conductivity, a significant fraction of the laser energy can be accumulated in the absorption region. Depending on the pulse repetition rate, the material can be heated to high temperatures even though the single pulse energy is too low to induce a significant material modification. Abstract: International audience; We report what we believe to be the first Yb:SrF2 regenerative femtosecond amplifier. The regenerative amplifier produces 325-fs pulses at 100-Hz repetition rate with an energy before compression of 1.4 mJ. The interest of Yb:SrF2 in such regenerative amplifiers and its complementarity to its well-known isotype Yb:CaF2 is also discussed.

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate nonlinear temporal compression of a high-energy Yb-doped fiber laser source in a multipass cell filled with argon. The 160 μJ 275 fs input pulses are compressed down to 135 μJ 33 fs at the output, corresponding to an overall transmission of 85%. We also analyze the output beam, revealing essentially no space-time couplings. We believe this technique can be scalable to higher pulse energies and shorter pulse durations, enabling access to a wider parameter range for a large variety of ultrafast laser sources.

Abstract: International audience; 520fs, 2.3-mJ pulses are demonstrated in a Yb:YAG booster amplifier delivering peak powers up to 4.4GW. To avoid damage and nonlinear-effect issues, passive divided pulse amplification is studied for the first time for bulk-amplifier. Great efforts have been deployed in the development of laser systems delivering femtosecond pulses for industrial and scientific applications. Among all available technologies, fiber lasers came out as one of the best choice due to their capability to deliver short pulse duration (typically 300 to 500 fs) together with high average power within very reliable and robust systems. Nevertheless, one of the main drawbacks remains the limited output energy available for such laser due to the strong confinement of the light. Standard femtosecond fiber lasers can deliver typically up to 10s µJ energy pulses; and lasers based on rod type technology allow to reach up to the mJ level for laboratory systems [1-2] and 200 µJ for industrial systems. We propose here to enhance the energy from fiber sources by implementing a very simple, but optimized, Yb doped YAG booster stage. This booster consists in using a cm-long crystal to have a simple high gain booster together with a rather-modest length to prevent from deleterious nonlinear effects like self-phase modulation and critical self-focusing. Secondly, the use of a simple and passive divided pulse amplification (DPA) setup [3] is also investigated, in order to exceed the energy limitation. We investigate how the DPA permits to overcome the laser threshold limits from 2.9 mJ to 4.1 mJ. This simple and straightforward amplifier geometry allows to deliver, in a nominal and safe regime, ultrashort pulses below 520fs for energy of 3mJ (before compression) 2.3 mJ after. We demonstrated then pulses up to 4.4 GW of peak power. The fiber laser source used is a standard industrial laser-developed by Amplitude Systems-that delivers pulse energy 180µJ up to 100 kHz repetition rate with duration of 350 fs. By limiting output energy below 200µJ, nonlinear effects and damages threshold in the laser are safely avoid. The Yb:YAG booster is implemented between the fiber amplifier and the compressor

Abstract: International audience; Optical materials can be structured by laser pulses to get new material functionalities in various scientific area going from photonics to medicine. For instance, wave guides, nano-gratings, emergence of nonlinear optical properties for data storage [1], cutting and welding of materials are applications of great interest. Structuration driven by a train of laser pulses is strongly emerging due to its advantages: table top laser facility, very well controlled structuration with energy deposition accuracy in the nJ range by adjusting the number of pulses, etc. The material structuration due to pulse-to-pulse cumulative effects should be deeply understood to design specific structures. This may be achieved by modelling the main physical processes and their possible coupling. Briefly, each laser pulse first induces photo-ionization and heats the conduction electrons which can then transfer their energy to the lattice. That leads to a local increase in the material temperature together with heat diffusion and thermally-activated ions migration on longer timescales. Since the laser pulse is partially absorbed, the electron dynamics and the pulse propagation are closely coupled. Due to the low heat diffusion coefficient of dielectric materials, the laser energy may be accumulated in the absorption region, leading to high temperatures even if the single pulse energy is too low to induce itself any significant material modification. A general modelling including all the above-mentioned processes will be presented, including the two following applications of interest.

Abstract: International audience; The use of femtosecond (fs) trains of pulse is now well established as an efficient technique to modify dielectric materials. Through numerous experimental parameters, it is possible to adjust the amount of deposited energy into the material with a great accuracy. When an intense fs laser pulse is focused inside a dielectric material, here soda-lime glass, electrons get promoted from the valence band (VB) to the conduction band (CB) by photo-ionization processes. After the fs pulse interaction, electrons in the CB transfer their energy to the lattice through collisional processes, and heat diffusion towards the surrounding cold matter of the focal point sets in. Due to the low heat diffusion coefficient (a few microseconds for micron-size volume), and by using a few hundreds kilohertz repetition rate (RR), one can achieve pulse-to-pulse accumulation of temperature. For sufficiently large number of pulses, it is possible to exceed the annealing temperature, and the dielectric material gets modified permanently. Our approach to simulate this phenomenon is based on the separation of the different timescales of the key physical processes. To this end, the laser pulse propagation is simulated by a paraxial Forward Maxwell code taking into account key nonlinear effects, in order to compute the single pulse energy deposition in the material. Thermal diffusion is taken into account by the heat equation, where we use the (repeated) single pulse energy deposition as heat source. Finally, reaching the annealing temperature is used as a threshold to get the dimensions of the permanent modification of the matter. Simulations and experiments were performed in soda-lime glass for a train of 300 fs pulses with an incident energy of 1.3 µJ per pulse. The laser beam, with a wavelength centered around 1030 nm, was focused into the glass bulk by a 10× objective. The theoretically predicted dimensions of the glass transition temperature zone are confronted with the dimensions of the experimental modifications of the glass. We note a threshold-like behavior for the onset of measurable modifications between 100 and 200 kHz, in the experiments as well as in the simulation results. The experimental dimensions are well reproduced by our model, despite a slight deviation in the predicted length for 200 and 300 kHz. We attribute this discrepancy to changes in the propagation dynamics due to successive material modification which is not (yet) taken account in this work.
