This article examines the background in which enterprises called free schools, as well as complementary educational activities, have taken root in Chile. Two kinds of recently burgeoning free schools are identified; one supplementing regular schooling with a social justice focus, and another that is a fully fledged alternative to other schooling. The history of freedom itself in Chile is explored from a historical perspective, contrasting somewhat with freedom as it is understood in more developed countries. Parallels to Anglophone free schools such as AS Neill's Summerhill are also discussed, as well as the sociopolitical context in which Chilean free schools continue to develop.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) caught Health Professions Education (HPE) institutions off-guard, and they are currently adjusting to a changed educational environment. On the horizon, however, is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which promises to be an even greater leap and challenge. This Guide begins by explaining the context and nature of AGI, including its characteristics of multi-modality, generality, adaptability, autonomy, and learning ability. It then explores the implications of AGI on students (including personalised learning and electronic tutors) and HPE institutions, and considers some of the context provided by AGI in healthcare. It then raises the problems to address, including the impact on employment, social risks, student adaptability, costs, quality, and others. After considering a possible timeline, the Guide then ends by indicating some first steps that HPE institutions and educators can take to prepare for AGI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 has had an extreme impact on schools. Although the effects of COVID-19 on schooling have been a topic of research, non-mainstream schools' coping has not received critical attention. This paper provides an evidence-based account of how non-mainstream (alternative) schools coped with the COVID-19 breakout. The study's data collection methods included interviews and observations of educators and students in five alternative schools in Israel. Qualitative measures revealed a three-stage model of coping: stress and helplessness; action and recuperation; discovery, and growth. The model delineates the evolution of schools who were grappling with the complexities and challenges of the pandemic. What began as stress and practical adaptations to cope with lockdown circumstances led to creative education and growth. Thus, the pandemic created an opportunity for educators to rethink educational processes. Findings showed the progression between stages depended on creative thinking and collaboration amongst educators. The study sheds light on the factors promoting growth in schools. Discovering alternative educational pathways is significant. For education to be more dialogic, flexible, and responsive, opportunities to reflect on these ideas should be embraced. Background: Alternative education provision such as Pupil Referral Units support young people who have been excluded from mainstream school settings and often from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, there is limited research to date exploring educators' perceptions of the complex needs of young people in PRUs, and the extent to which PRUs as currently configured can meet such needs. Methods: Between March 2019 and October 2020 twenty-two participants holding various educational roles from five different Pupil Referral Units across London and Southeast England were interviewed. The interviews aimed to explore the participants' experiences of working with students in PRU's and examine some of the challenges that they might encounter. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using Reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The three identified themes and their sub-themes highlighted the complex needs of these young people and identified significant barriers to effective service provision. The first theme 'Complexities of PRU population' highlighted the challenges that young people in PRUs face and perceived systemic short falls in addressing such complexity. The second theme 'Challenges of the PRU environment' highlights the frustrations that educators experience when it comes to providing adequate support to young people in PRU's, the absence of agency support, and the uncertainty that these educational settings can bring. The third theme 'Peer Group Influences' highlights the impact of peer groups from beyond the classroom on engagement within the classroom. Conclusions: Despite the clear complex needs of young people in PRUs, staff reported feeling ill-equipped to support these individuals and lacked access to effective inter-agency support. Participants reported that pupils' mental health difficulties were exacerbated by exclusion and reintegration practices, an over-zealous focus on educational outcomes and the impact of gang influences on their school lives. Implications include more specific mental health training for staff working in PRU's, improved inter-agency working and the incorporation of trauma-informed approaches in educational practice. Physical education has the potential to achieve the desired outcomes of alternative provision schooling by re‐engaging young people in learning, supporting their social and emotional development and facilitating their reintegration into mainstream schooling. To do so, however, it requires sufficient and appropriate space because, unlike other subjects, its focus on embodied curriculum, embodied pedagogy and embodied learning requires the mind–body–self of young people to move across, within and between space(s). As such, we embrace what Soja (Seeking Spatial Justice, University of Minnesota Press, 2010) termed the ‘spatial turn’ in research and draw on the concept of spatial (in)justice to explore social, economic and environment inequalities in the education and alternative provision landscapes in England. To do so, we gathered empirical evidence via individual interviews with 13 physical education practitioners working in alternative provision schools in England. With the permission of participants, interviews were audio‐recorded and audio transcribed, and the transcripts subjected to reflexive thematic analysis. We discuss spatial injustices in alternative provision physical education through the following themes: (1) accessing space for physical education off‐site; (2) low expectations for appropriate space and making the most of the limited space available for physical education; and (3) weather determining usage of outside space and difficulties gaining external funding for on‐site spaces. We end this article by calling on others to join our efforts to lobby government to ensure that alternative provision settings, new and old, are not exempt from the School Premises Regulations so that a clear, legally binding expectation is created so that sufficient space is provided to teach physical education. Objective Methods Results Conclusions Dementia affects more than 55 million people worldwide. Use of restraints for hospitalized older adults with dementia is a social issue that should be addressed systematically and should not depend on the characteristics of nurses. This study reviewed the literature on organizational factors associated with reducing use of restraints in older adults with dementia admitted to acute care hospitals.A scoping review was performed. Three databases were searched for papers that met our eligibility criteria. Factors related to restraint reduction were extracted, and results were deduced. Through inductive analysis, subthemes were categorized according to similarities and differences, which were then integrated into broader themes.Sixteen studies were eligible for inclusion. The prevalence of restraints ranged from 5.1% to 80.0% depending on how the meaning of restraint was interpreted. The most common indications for restraints were history of falls and fall risk. Interdisciplinary screening for restraints was associated with reduced prevalence of restraints, with a 0.18‐fold (confidence interval [CI]: 0.12–0.24) reduction through use of a restraint decision flowchart and a 0.76‐fold (CI: 0.63–0.92) reduction through consultation with a psychiatrist. Interdisciplinary members included nurses, physicians, clinical psychologists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and therapists.Research is needed to introduce and develop an interdisciplinary restraint decision‐making system and to test its effectiveness. Important factors in implementing alternatives to restraints are the harmful effects of restraints, expertise in dementia, regular education on alternative methods, an inpatient environment that ensures patient safety, and the development of human resources. Objective: We developed an online training module targeting nail salon workers' knowledge of chemical exposure and safety, responding directly to the workers' expressed needs in a Midwest State. Methods: Following a needs assessment, we designed and developed the module content. Implementation and evaluation approaches were rolled out into three phases. Results: Seven workers completed the English version of the module, and 24 workers completed the Vietnamese version. The average pretest scores for those who completed the English and Vietnamese versions of the training were 81.43% and 58.33%, respectively. The average posttest score was 98.57% for English and 91.67% for Vietnamese. Conclusion: Culturally appropriate educational resources are effective facets of enhancing nail salon workers' awareness and their occupational health subsequently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article documents the first phase of an Action Research project that examines how teachers can inquire with young people into critical moments across their schooling journey. Each year, approximately 3000 young people aged from 13 years to 16 years are directed to continue their schooling in Alternative Education sites in New Zealand. More than 60% are Māori young people. Most arrive in Alternative Education with just referral documents detailing the negative reasons for exclusion. Teachers are expected to make a fresh start with re-engaging young people in learning, while the stories young people hold closest remain largely unspoken. Six teachers volunteered to plan inquiries that give voice to students' schooling experiences. The findings from this research should inspire a shift in schooling practices, particularly for those who are marginalised. Data from the first phase revealed that the teachers' critically informed outlooks, their considered responses to the complexity of lived experience, and finding cultural reference points were all central to formulating their inquiry. Moreover, the teachers embraced Action Research as a professional learning opportunity. In Saudi Arabia, the lack of female role models and the absence of mentoring and support programmes have contributed to the limited progression of female graduates into STEM professions. In this study, we present a shift in the design of e-mentoring models for younger generations to enable less committed and more flexible relationships between mentors and mentees. Qudwa is an unplatformed STEM e-mentoring system designed to facilitate communication between female Saudi professional mentors and young female mentees through existing social media technologies and practices. The design of Qudwa is based on three design requirements: (1) flexibility and control; (2) integration of e-mentoring with daily used online tools; and (3) visibility. We show the potential of existing technologies and social media platforms to facilitate a new form of e-mentoring and conclude with several design recommendations. This work encourages further investigation into e-mentoring in the context of Saudi Arabia and similar contexts and examination of different applications of unplatforming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper makes two contributions to knowledge. First, it broadens geographies of education's focal reach by concentrating attention on the consumption of supplementary education. Supplementary education markets are booming as parents seek to ensure their children have the qualifications required to succeed in knowledge economies. The paper elucidates how consumption of such commercially provided tuition—which is delivered outside of school boundaries but designed to improve performance in school—is shaped by place‐specific, classed and racialised parenting cultures. This shines an important light on shadow education market mechanics that have hitherto been hidden from geographical view, and foregrounds the significant role parenting cultures play in shaping children's educational experiences. Future research in geographies of education must attend to these parenting cultures, as interactions between the home and diverse formal, informal, alternative and supplementary education settings play an increasingly crucial role in confronting and reproducing educational inequality. Second, the paper advances the conceptual contribution of geographies of education to interdisciplinary debates about parents and education. It demonstrates that multi‐scalar geographical research makes a unique contribution to interdisciplinary theorisations of home–school links, including those utilising Bourdieu's notion of cultural reproduction, and Lareau's model of concerted cultivation. Specifically, multi‐scalar analysis demonstrates that: (i) place‐sensitive research is vital as it contextualises parenting cultures, reattaching analyses of parental habitus and capital to the field, highlighting how intersecting global, national and local processes shape parents' educational practices; (ii) previously overlooked racial differences in concerted cultivation must be analysed without being naturalised, by exploring how racialised dispositions towards education are shaped in/across place, and reproduced through global/local racialised social capital; and (iii) inter‐class differences that have dominated parenting debates remain important, but attention to inter‐class similarity and intra‐class variation, as it emerges through intersections with race and in place, is equally vital. This paper focuses geographical attention on the booming supplementary education market: it elucidates how consumption of commercially provided tuition—which is delivered outside of school boundaries but designed to improve performance in school—is shaped by place‐specific, classed and racialised parenting cultures. The paper argues that geographical research can make a unique contribution to interdisciplinary debates about parents' impact on education, as it: (i) elucidates how intersecting global, national and local processes shape parents' educational practices; (ii) illuminates how parents' racialised dispositions are shaped in place and reproduced though global/local racialised social capital; and (iii) foregrounds inter‐ and intra‐class specificities in parenting cultures while attending to class's intersection with race and emergence in place. This article draws on a qualitative data analysis of the experiences of a small group of so-called 'hard-to-reach' disabled young men in Alternative Provisions (APs). Supporting young people has largely focused on the use of professional interventions. We contrast the young men's experiences of professional service interventions with the complementary functions of social and psychological capital embedded in their own friendship networks. The young men rarely used the professional support offered, often finding professional practices and institutional systems unhelpful. This contrasted with the support gained in their own friendship networks which offered opportunities for enhancing well-being and agency. There are implications here for how young people facing risks associated with school exclusion and marginalisation can best be supported. We suggest that young people themselves are important agents in providing mutuality and solidarity, which can enhance various and varied life-course transitions. Points of interest: Disabled, working-class male students are increasingly placed into Alternative Provisions intended for students who would otherwise not receive suitable education. Supporting young people has often focused on professional interventions and the value of young people's friendship networks has received little research attention. This article is based on research with young disabled men on the margins of Alternative Provisions, located within a medium sized local authority. The research found that these young people are important agents in providing mutuality and solidarity. This can enhance life-course transitions. Research on young disabled men rarely mentions emotion and intimacy. Our data identified instances of friendship offering young people the support necessary to endure problems related to exclusion and to collectively develop effective coping strategies. Through in‐depth interviews, this study explored US youth climate justice activists' views and experiences of climate change education (CCE) and their recommendations for alternative educational approaches to advance climate justice. Youth activists (N = 16; ages 15 to 17) viewed education as critical to spurring societal transformation, however, most described narrowly focused (e.g., depoliticized; science‐centric) or inadequate (e.g., sparse, absent) school‐based CCE. Youths' recommendations emphasized the need for justice‐driven and action‐oriented CCE for all ages to equip all learners with the knowledge and skills to actively contribute to urgently needed, justice‐minded, systems‐level change. ABSTRAT: Deaf and hard-of-hearing students were greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to communication barriers, social distancing, and difficulties with distance education. Numerous researchers have investigated the experiences of such students during the COVID-19 pandemic, but generally addressed single aspects of their lives; hence, there is a need to investigate the broader impact of the pandemic on deaf students. Notably, very few local or international studies on the experiences of deaf students in Georgia are available. To address this gap, I employed qualitative methods to frame the accounts and memories of deaf students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data for this study were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 12 such students attending specialised boarding schools for the deaf in Georgia. Four main themes were identified: the impact of COVID-19 on their moods, the substantial increase in screen time due to distance learning and screen-based social interactions, the dual nature of COVID-19 as a catalyst for increased interactions with family members, and its role in prompting contemplations of the future. This article describes and explores the lived experiences of deaf students and contributes to the collective memory of affected communities by highlighting the value of individual voices, particularly in a small country that is often unknown or overlooked. One of the most significant aspects of increased inequalities in society are those pertaining to educational inequality, or disparities related to access, uptake and completion of education. Of decisive interest in this context are challenges and dilemmas facing practices which try to tackle or mitigate educational inequalities. Although research on the topic has developed considerably in the last two decades, there is still a lack of research looking at concrete practice from an internationally comparative perspective. Through qualitative practice research, including problem-centred expert interviews, focus groups and guided tours, we have investigated the challenges and dilemmas which obstruct the implementation, development and day-to-day activities of educational practices. We introduce this article by providing our theoretical perspectives on educational equality and its necessary pre-conditions. We argue in favour of a much more emancipatory educational practice in the sense of a Freire-inspired ideal of fostering participation, self-determination and solidarity in both formal and non-formal educational environments. These theoretical considerations are then related to concrete practices, whereby we focus on the perspectives of stakeholders and educational practitioners involved such as teachers, social workers, non-formal educators or coaches. Based on our empirical material we move on to reflect on challenges and dilemmas faced in such practices. We systematise these cross-national challenges into seven categories which we have labelled 'The seven Ps', namely: Politics, Placement, Partnerships, Provision, Personnel, Parents, and Participants. We conclude by explaining why this framework should be applicable to development education, arguing how these categories may serve as a cautionary framework for developing pioneering practices striving for social justice across the global community. BACKGROUND: Problem-based learning (PBL), a student-centered approach which has been implemented in many educational institutes worldwide. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the proficiency of students in 5 key areas of PBL process and assess perceptions of students towards PBL learning using a self-explanatory questionnaire. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2020 to September 2022 and evaluated perceptions of 1st year dental students of Batch 2021 (having Face-to-face PBL sessions) and batch 2020 (having online PBL sessions) using a questionnaire. Three similar PBL cases were used, which assessed PBL parameters that included attendance, group dynamics, knowledge, communication skills and preparation. Statistical analysis was performed for all the categorical and continuous variables. RESULTS: Majority of Distance Learning (DL) group (66.7%) concurred that PBL helped improve their communication skills, decision making power (66.7%), self-directed learning (80%) and promoted interaction with peers (66.7) and teachers (68.9%). The Face –to- Face (FF) group demonstrated better scores (7.7±2.42 & 7.55±2.55) with respect to their attendance and group dynamics (7.44±2.17 & 8.02±2.40) in PBL 1 & 3 as compared to DL group. Overall, better performance in all the 5 key areas of PBL was observed for the FF group versus the DL group. CONCLUSION: The Distance learning (DL) group displayed a positive attitude and perception towards PBL as a learning strategy whereas Face-to-face (FF) group showed greater performance and proficiency in the key PBL parameters scores. Alternative teacher certification programs (ATCPs) are popular policy responses to the growing US teacher shortage problem, yet debates around these programs often fail to recognise the unique experiences of beginning teachers in this licensure pathway. In this essay, I draw on Dewey’s (1904) essay ‘The Relation of Theory to Practice in Education’ to clarify the meaning and implications of so-called ‘alternative’ programs. I argue that by analysing the time, placement, and methods of practice work reveals how ATCP teachers are both under-supported and closely surveilled. Decolonial scholars endeavour to evade the construction of another singularity by rejecting the allure to universalise a single definition of decoloniality and difference, which may claim narratives and praxis that would liberate all peoples but would re-enact other forms of irreflexive violence. For this rationale, we draw on our loci of enunciation to argue for ‘Islamic Emancipation’ as a decentring ‘Maarifa’ that resonates with the logics of a substantial number of people (2 billion Muslims as of 2023) to whom Islamic philosophies are legitimate epistemologies for navigating social realities. Islamic Emancipation is an onto-epistemological compass through which we generate novel epistemic readings of religious texts into the debates on decoloniality in education. The applied modalities of Islamic Emancipation within education can be unpacked through three main approaches. First, by orienting students to process colonial organisation as the oppressive imposition of unequal systems, some assumptions about those who had/have been subject to subtle workings of colonial structures are undermined. Second, educators are epistemic and activist subjects who are entitled to intellectual freedom but with a comparable level of responsibility to act, challenge and intervene. AbstractDesign of Experiments (DoE) is a relevant class to undergraduate students in the sciences, because it teaches them how to plan, conduct, and analyze experiments. In the literature on DoE, there are several contributions to its pedagogy, such as easy-to-use class experiments, virtual experiments, and software to construct experimental designs. However, there are virtually no systematic evaluations of the actual DoE pedagogy. To address this issue, we build the first database of DoE courses offered to undergraduate students in the United States. The database has records on courses offered from 2019 to 2022 at the best universities in the US News Best National Universities ranking of 2022. Specifically, it has data on 18 general and content-specific features of 206 courses. To study the DoE pedagogy, we analyze the database using descriptive statistics and text mining. Based on our analysis, we provide instructors with recommendations and teaching material to enhance their DoE courses. The database and material are included in the supplement of this article. ABSTRACT On the basis of ethnographic fieldwork in Singapore, the article explores the tension between children's academic success and emotional wellbeing, and the ways in which middle‐class parents navigate these conflicting aspirations. It delves into families with young children who pursue alternative lifestyles by moving abroad to a presumably less stressful environment or by homeschooling their children. The study aims to understand how parents who ‘opt out’ perceive their children's future and the sacrifices they make in pursuing alternative education for their children. Decisions were made to ‘protect’ the child from the potentially negative effects of a competitive education system, while pursuing an alternative childhood and school–life balance. East Asian education systems are globally renowned for their high academic standards and for producing students who score at the top on international assessment tests and rankings. In this context, alternative educational pursuits are both less established and less well understood, yet they are central to understanding emerging aspirations of wellbeing as well as the reconfiguration of conventional ideals of upward social mobility. Home education is a growing but relatively unknown and understudied phenomenon in Italy. This study offers an empirical contribution to surface the key familial characteristics, parental rationales, and pedagogic practice of home education in this national context. As part of a larger mixed-methods research project, the findings of a survey administered to 91 home-educating parents/carers (representing 142 home-educated students) are presented. The study reveals that over half of the respondents commenced home-educating in 2020 or later, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This resonates with trends observed nationally and internationally, showing a recent significant upsurge in home education. Despite the importance of the pandemic as a contingent factor, the decision to home-educate among these parents was mostly driven by pedagogical and social concerns. The desire to provide a more personalised, child-centred, and “better-quality” education was key among this study population. Also, they were attracted to home education to embrace a more flexible and family-first lifestyle. Remarkably, religious-based motivations exerted only a modest influence. Regarding pedagogical practices, nearly half of the participants opted for a collective educational arrangement, while the remaining half opted for a home-based or individual approach at the family level. Most participants reported a preference for a “semi-structured” approach in planning their educational activities. They drew inspiration from a broad and eclectic mix of philosophies and pedagogic practices, with Montessori and Steiner being the most prevalent. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an abrupt transition to online learning in nursing education, presenting unprecedented challenges. This research aims to comprehensively assess the challenges faced by nursing students during this transition, exploring key issues, recommending strategies, and analyzing their impact on student perceptions. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 941 nursing students across eight Arab countries—Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Oman, KSA, UAE, and Egypt—to ensure a representative sample and enhance external validity. Data collection involved a thorough survey covering academic, technological, and administrative challenges. Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, and variance analysis using Kruskal -Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests were conducted to examine differences between countries and sociodemographic variables. Results: Descriptive statistics revealed significant demographic disparities. Single individuals in Jordan and those with lower family income in Palestine and Lebanon reported notably higher challenges. Female students in Iraq and Lebanon perceived greater challenges compared to males. Students pursuing diplomas in Jordan and bridging programs in Lebanon faced elevated difficulties. Governmental university students in Lebanon and private university students in Jordan encountered distinct challenges. Lack of available internet was particularly challenging in Jordan and Lebanon, whereas students using tablets in Lebanon and laptops in Palestine reported heightened challenges. Economic disparities, notably in family income, further hindered engagement with online learning materials. Across countries, academic challenges included managing coursework and accessing resources, exacerbated by administrative inefficiencies, especially in Palestine and Lebanon. Students in the UAE reported fewer challenges, facilitated by robust internet infrastructure and comprehensive institutional support. Conclusion: This study provides critical insights into the challenges faced by nursing students during the Middle East's online learning transition. Key challenges encompass technological issues, academic workload, and administrative inefficiencies, with significant disparities across countries. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions, particularly in Palestine, to enhance online learning experiences. Policymakers and educational institutions can leverage these insights to advocate for student-centric approaches and policy development aimed at improving online learning across the region. Simple Summary: Chronic cancer-related pain, caused by surgery, radiotherapy, or systemic treatments, affects almost half of all breast cancer patients, and current therapeutic options are insufficient. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) has provided relief in many chronic pain syndromes but has been rarely applied in the cancer field. PNE is also without side effects and could therefore be implemented at different moments of the patient's journey. We analyzed trials investigating PNE efficacy for managing breast cancer-related pain, identifying methodological issues that should be addressed in future studies to obtain high-quality data. Chronic pain is a common consequence of breast cancer (BC) and its treatments. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) is a non-pharmacological intervention that adopts a biopsychosocial approach and has already been proven to be effective for different chronic pain syndromes. The present review aims to critically assess clinical trials comparing the efficacy of PNE to traditional biomedical education (BME) in reducing BC-related pain and improving quality of life. We conducted a literature search in scientific databases, including all studies regarding PNE use specifically for BC-related pain. Ongoing randomized controlled and observational studies were identified from ClinicalTrials.gov and congress proceedings. A total of eight clinical trials met the review criteria. The participants were all administered physical therapy and assigned to receive either BME or PNE interventions. Among the completed clinical studies, one reported no statistically relevant differences between the two groups, whereas the other showed lower levels of pain-related indexes in the PNE population compared to the BME one. While the current literature is inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of PNE for managing BC pain, we strongly support the need for further trials, as PNE could empower BC patients in both prevention of and coping with pain, offering the advantage of having no side effects. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced changes in the delivery of medical education. We aimed to explore these changes and determine whether they will impact the future of medical education in any way. We invited leaders in medical education from all accessible US-based medical schools to participate in an online individual semi-structured interview. Representatives of 16 medical schools participated. They commented on the adequacy of online education for knowledge transfer, and the logistical advantages it offered, but decried its negative influence on social learning, interpersonal relationships and professional development of students, and its ineffectiveness for clinical education. Most participants indicated that they would maintain online learning for didactic purposes in the context of flipped classrooms but that a return to in-person education was essential for most other educational goals. Novel content will be introduced, especially in telemedicine and social medicine, and the students' roles and responsibilities in patient care and in curricular development may evolve in the future. This study is the first to document the practical steps that will be adopted by US medical schools in delivering medical education, which were prompted and reinforced by their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Children with cancer in low- and middle-income countries were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but little is known about how adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer were affected. Sixty-seven physicians and nonphysician providers were interviewed about their experiences caring for AYAs with cancer in Latin America. Quotes related to the COVID-19 pandemic were identified and grouped into themes. Barriers from the COVID-19 pandemic included limited space, restrictions on travel, reduced funding, limited staff, limited services, and changes to treatment. As individuals are likely to feel anxious in case of obscurities in distance education environments, it seems necessary to develop a data collection tool for anxiety in such environments. In this study, a scale was developed to reveal the anxiety levels of university students in distance education. Quantitative research method was used in the study. The study group consisted of 935 students in the first sample for exploratory factor analysis and 418 students in the second sample for confirmatory factor analysis including those who previously experienced distance education. After the validity and reliability were ensured in the study, the final version of the anxiety scale for distance education (ASDE) consisted of a total of 17 items and three dimensions. These dimensions were listed as readiness for the profession anxiety, social anxiety and privacy concern. Furthermore, to establish the concurrent validity, the Online Privacy Concern Scale and Anxiety subscale of Brief Symptom İnventory are administered to 219 and 197 students in the third and fourth samples as a criterion scale. In this article we experimentally evaluate Colombia's Think Equal program, which teaches socioemotional skills to children ages 3 to 6. Given the context of COVID-19, the original design was adapted as a hybrid model, alternating in-person and remote instruction and engaging families in the implementation of the curriculum. We found that the program had positive effects on children's prosocial behavior, self-awareness, and cognitive learning. The intervention also had an impact on the education center's personnel (community mothers) and caregivers implementing the activities. Treated community mothers had higher levels of empathy, lower negative health symptoms, better pedagogical practices, and a closer relationship with the children's caregivers compared with those in the control group. Treated caregivers had better stimulation practices and lower negative health symptoms compared with those in the control group. These findings suggest that a well-designed intervention has the potential to develop socioemotional skills in children at an early age and, at the same time, to develop capacities in those who implement the activities. Our results have important implications for the design, implementation, and evaluation of early childhood socioemotional learning programs and provide novel evidence about the challenges faced by interventions combining face-to-face and remote learning. Steiner might be considered the prototypic pioneer from a previous century, whose alternative education vision continues to have huge international appeal and status. Yet Steiner's 'pioneering' views of education are open to interpretation via the creation of an ironic visual collage work, 'pioneer' is examined as a paradox in itself, like a seemingly contradictory or absurd statement that is found on investigation, to be true. A paradoxical person therefore combines contradictory elements. Exploring examples of Steiner's global reach, such as storytelling in Steiner schools in New Zealand and the embedding of indigenous narrative knowledge in education, the danger of superficially rendering ancient cultural forms of knowledge to fit with western 'scientific' understanding is critiqued. Disrupting both what is meant by pioneer-led, 'literate' forms of communication such as educational tracts and curricula, this piece resists with the artistically pioneering and disruptive practices of scribble. It is well known that social interaction enhances learning processes, improving abilities such as attention and memorization. However, it is not clear whether similar advantages may be obtained even in virtual environments. Here, we investigate whether virtual interactions in a video game, similarly to real-life social interactions, may improve individuals' performance in a subsequent implicit learning task. Twenty-one healthy participants were asked to play a cooperative video game for 20 minutes in three different gaming modalities: alone (Single-Player); together with someone without verbal interactions (Multi-Player −); and with someone with verbal interactions (Multi-Player +). After each gaming session, participants were presented with an EEG paradigm directed to measure mismatch negativity (MMN) responses, a well-validated index of implicit learning. MMN responses were significantly larger following Multi-Player +, as compared with Single-Player, and Multi-Player − conditions. No significant difference was found between Single-Player, and Multi-Player − conditions. These results indicate that implicit learning processes are enhanced following communicative virtual interactions. Verbal interaction in a virtual environment seems necessary to elicit social copresence and its positive effects on learning performances. Background: Mindfulness practices enhance executive function skills and academic achievement, spurring interest in integrating mindfulness interventions into education. Embedding mindfulness practice into a digital math game may provide a low‐cost, scalable way to induce mindfulness and boost game‐based learning, yet this approach remains unexplored. Objectives: We investigated the learning benefits of integrating mindfulness exercises in a digital math learning game and examined how students' trait mindfulness might moderate the outcomes. Methods: Two classroom studies were conducted with 404 5th and 6th grade students from six public schools in the U.S. (nStudy 1 = 227, nStudy 2 = 177). The two randomized controlled experiments assigned students to one of the three conditions: passive control (playing the digital learning game Decimal Point), story‐enriched active control, or mindfulness‐enriched condition. Trait mindfulness, learning gains, and in‐game problem‐solving (including problem‐solving duration, error count and correctness after reminder) were assessed. Study 2 included a manipulation check to better understand the effects of the mindfulness intervention. Results: Findings showed no significant differences in learning gains, problem‐solving duration or error count among the conditions. Students' trait mindfulness did not moderate these outcomes. Mindfulness reminders in the mindfulness‐enriched game led to more correct answers after errors than jokes in the story‐enriched game. Study 2 revealed that we failed to induce higher state mindfulness through the mindfulness inductions. Conclusions: Mindfulness prompts could be especially beneficial for students experiencing frustration during gameplay, warranting more exploration for digital game‐based instruction. We highlight barriers and future directions for fostering mindfulness through computer‐based instruction in classrooms. The students' assessment regarding collaborative learning and workgroups is being reported as one of the main concerns in higher education. The increased technological evolution leads to adapting novel self and peer assessment methods to e-assessment. This paper reports the results of a study to evaluate students' opinion about their experience with an e-assessment tool, WebAVALIA, and its assessment criteria. The results indicate that students (N = 359) consider the tool fair, and it increases the productivity regarding work development. A broad range of health professionals can obtain the authority to prescribe in the UK upon successful completion of an accredited non-medical prescribing programme. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many approved education institutions have adopted more permanent blended approaches to their programmes. This literature review aims to explore blended approaches to delivering postgraduate education to health professionals, with a view to improving the performance and satisfaction of students undertaking non-medical prescribing programmes. Seven papers were selected from a database search; five were research literature and two practice literature. The results suggest that social constructivism and laying a 'foundation' for effective study are key to student satisfaction. Advising students to engage with the provider's Virtual Learning Environment before a programme commences, dividing students into small groups that are designed to create communities of practice, scheduling face-to-face activities to provide early opportunities for social interaction and further research are recommended to enhance education for non-medical prescribers. This research aims to delve into the thoughts of J. Drost, which emphasizes values as the primary foundation in the school education system. Colossus Gonzaga School is highlighted as an 'alternative' model that emphasizes the presence of values in education while interpreting education as a humanitarian effort. The method of literature review is employed with steps including the identification of primary references regarding Drost's writings, critical analysis, comparison, and synergy, as well as compiling findings with the identification of weaknesses and strengths of Drost's thoughts. The results indicate that values ​​become the main foundation in the implementation of the education system, underpinning Pater Drost's concept. The establishment of Colossus Gonzaga School emphasizes the importance of values ​​in educational orientation, particularly in interpreting education as a humanitarian endeavor. Amidst the domination of education during the New Order era under the reign of Soeharto, where education was viewed as a rigid instrument of power, Drost's ideas emerged as an alternative that sought to liberate education from the shackles of values ​​that eroded the essence of education. These principles are also reflected in the development of Colossus Gonzaga School as a Catholic institution striving to develop the dignity of students through the liberation of human values.

In the dynamic landscape of education, homeschooling continues to offer a compelling alternative to traditional schooling. Homeschool numbers surged through the pandemic and have not decreased to pre-pandemic levels. This study examines the shared connections between homeschooled families in Connecticut and local public libraries by looking at how home educators use library resources and participate in library programming; and examining how Connecticut libraries perceive and respond to the diverse needs of homeschooling communities. Based on 2 Connecticut statewide surveys, one sent to public librarians and another to homeschoolers, the study sought to identify areas of strengths, weaknesses and disconnects in the homeschool community and public library relationships in Connecticut. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected and reviewed to identify potential improvements to the evolving role of libraries in supporting alternative education pathways, and the potential for an infusion of public library support from the homeschool community. As the number of students enrolled in charter schools grows across the country, so do questions about their impact on academic outcomes (National Center for Educational Statistics). Given the importance of student test scores as evidence of success at the state, school, classroom, and teacher levels, understanding the effect of these charter schools' pedagogies on student outcomes is critical. Waldorf-inspired charter schools are one such growing alternative pedagogy. This study answers the question: Is there any significant difference between the levels of achievement for students in English Language Arts and math who are enrolled in Waldorf-inspired charter schools vs. those in either local public school classrooms or other charter classrooms that do not use the Waldorf pedagogy? Using OLS multiple linear regression this study examined the significance of the levels of achievement in English Language Arts (ELA) and math among students in 16 Waldorf-inspired charter schools and other charter and non-charter schools in California, using the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores. The research revealed that there are significantly higher percentages of eighth-grade students in Waldorf-inspired charter schools meeting or exceeding state standards in ELA and math as compared to their non-Waldorf charter school comparison groups, even when controlling for the size of the school, socioeconomic status, and district-level fixed effects (p < 0.01). This is despite the significantly smaller percentage of students in these schools meeting state standards in grades three through five. The results of this study suggest that Waldorf's developmental approach to education can result in strong academic outcomes despite a slower, low-stakes approach to teaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The literature on "what works" in disciplinary alternative education is inconclusive. Our current understanding of effective disciplinary alternative education programs is based primarily on quantitative data collected for administrative purposes. The voices of youth directly affected by disciplinary alternative education programs are often excluded from the conversation. To fill this gap in the literature, our study utilizes Photovoice methodology with 11 youth in disciplinary alternative education programs in the Midwest. The findings suggest the importance of positive relationships with adults, having tailored educational curriculum delivery, and addressing punitive elements of program culture for the academic and behavioral outcomes for youth with moderate to high-risk behaviors in a disciplinary alternative education setting. Disengagement from education is frequently reported as a reflection of persistent patterns of inequality. This research prioritized student voice to understand the experiences of young people who had disengaged from mainstream education. The current research aimed to understand why students enter a flexible learning programme, and explore how flexible learning can result in student engagement and subsequent academic success. A phenomenological case study approach was adopted incorporating semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, it was important to include the teacher's perspective (as the researcher). Narrative inquiry and semi-structured interviews with graduating students concluded that disengaged students were 'pushed' out of mainstream schooling but subsequently engaged and became academically successful in an alternative education setting. Free Open-Access Medical Education (FOAMed) has transformed medical education in the past decade by complementing and substituting for traditional medical education when needed. The attractiveness of FOAMed resources is due to their inexpensive nature, wide availability, and user ability to access on demand across a variety of devices, making it easy to create, share, and participate. The subject of nephrology is complex, fascinating, and challenging. Traditional didactic lectures can be passive and ineffective in uncovering these difficult concepts and may need frequent revisions. Active teaching methods like flipped classrooms have shown some benefits, and these benefits can only be multifold with current social media tools. Social media will inspire the involvement of students and allow them to create and share educational content in a "trendy way," encouraging the participation of their peers and thus building an educational environment more conducive to them while promoting revision and retainment. FOAMed also promotes asynchronous learning, spaced learning, microlearning, and multimodal presentation with a meaningful variation. In recent years, Innovative Schools in Dali have received increasing coverage in Chinese social media and have also attracted middle-class parents from cities, as viable bottom-up educational initiatives. This paper explores the rationales for Chinese middle-class parents' choice of Innovative Schools in Dali. Analysis of data from online interviews with 33 parents from seven Innovative Schools in Dali revealed three types of narratives parents provided in explaining their alternative school choices: investors, escapees, and idealists. The narratives reflect different ways in which parents negotiate their relationship with mainstream education and Innovative Schools, how they define the "educational goods" they would like to pursue and how they deal with potential tensions within their practice. Non-formal education has been presented as a powerful tool in promoting successful aging. This study aims to explore whether non-formal education effectively contributes to successful aging and identify the dimensions that contribute most to promoting this process. Based on a qualitative interpretative hermeneutic methodology, the perceptions of 28 participants in a non-formal educational approach lasting 12 months were analyzed. The results indicate that, in the participants' perception, the experience was very positive, highlighting the most impactful benefits as an increase in positive emotions and subjective well-being, revitalization of social interaction and optimization of free time, satisfaction in learning, and the positive impact of learning on everyday life. This paper explores scholarly literature published since the 1960s that examines peoples' cognitive and perceptual understanding of map projections. Map projections present challenges to virtually everyone who uses them. Some of the challenges include selecting a projection, specifying projection parameters, and understanding distortion patterns. Broadly speaking, cartographic inquiry has addressed many topics in cognition and perception; yet, research focused on projections remains scarce. We surveyed the body of research studies incorporating projections or a projection-related topic (e.g. distortion) as a variable in the experimental design. Topics included asking participants to estimate areas, conceptualize travel paths, or identify preferred graticule aesthetics. Despite the conclusions reported by these studies, we noted three general concerns that may diminish the accuracy of results from research in this area. First, projection-specific terminology or properties critical to the studies and analysis that may be misunderstood by researchers and/or participants. Second, study participants were largely homogenous. Third, most of the studies were not designed for replication or reproducibility. This paper critically analyses how Islamization of Knowledge (IOK), Radical Reform (RR), and Maqasid Methodology (MM), three distinct Islamic intellectual projects, attempted to develop discourses of Islamic epistemology in facing contemporary developments of natural and social sciences. Mainly, the paper focuses on similarities, differences, and potential contributions of all three projects respectively. Initially, this paper observes that IOK, RR, and MM have solid agreements among themselves in defining the core crisis of the modern Islamic intellectual tradition, as well as in highlighting the importance of inclusion of Islamic primary sources and its normative guidance in the process of reorienting modern knowledge. Equally, each of those projects presents itself as a new reflection of Islamic primary texts considering current intellectual challenges. Nevertheless, this paper further finds that all three projects have deep disagreements among themselves in terms of defining the scope of epistemic authority of revelation, reason, and spirituality and thereby offer three different visions of Islamic epistemic schema in facing modern knowledge. Aim: Generation Z students do not get much benefit from traditional distance education methods. Instead, they need new platforms and methods that will motivate them and increase their success. Methods: A randomized controlled study was performed on 42 students. The experimental group students were presented with metaverse, and the control group students were taught the distance education course. Results: In this study, in the students' Instructional Materials Motivation Survey, the mean scores of both the experimental and control groups exhibited no significant difference before the intervention. Regarding the effect of metaverse‐based learning on students' Instructional Materials Motivation Survey, the mean score of the control group was 82.55 ± 13.18, and the mean score of the experimental group was 96.52 ± 9.54 and there was a significant difference between groups after the intervention. When the academic achievement levels of the groups were examined, it was determined that the experimental group scored 76.57 ± 13.33 and the control group received 64.40 ± 16.42 points. It was determined there was a significant difference between the groups in terms of learning motivation and academic achievement. Conclusion: The study results show that the participants accepted the important role of metaverse as an effective learning method compared to traditional distance education methods. Stemming from the research "The Fourth Impulse of Pedagogical Renewal in Spain", this article addresses three key issues: firstly, and as a terminological exercise, it differentiates three concepts that are too often treated interchangeably. These are: reform, renewal and innovation. Secondly, some of the defining aspects that, in our view, characterise centres of pedagogical renewal are presented. Thirdly, some of the peculiarities of pedagogical renewal today (what we agree to call the "third impulse of pedagogical renewal") are presented. Introduction: Postoperative patients with ostomies experience significant changes in their lives as a result of the device implantation. Self-care is important to improve their health outcomes. Telehealth provides an opportunity to expand access to self-care education. Aim: This is a multicenter, non-inferiority randomized, open-label, controlled trial to evaluate the non-inferiority of a telehealth intervention to the standard in-person approach in improving self-care behaviors. Methods and analysis: Three hundred and eighty-four patients aged ≥ 18 years, with a recently placed ostomy, no stomal/peristomal complications, and documented cognitive integrity will be randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either a telehealth intervention (four remote educational sessions) or a standard educational approach (four in-person sessions) delivered in outpatient settings. Every session (remote and in-person) will occur on Days 25, 32, 40, and 60 after discharge. Follow-ups will occur 1, 3, and 6 months after the last intervention session. Primary outcome is self-care maintenance measured using the Ostomy Self-care Index (OSCI). Secondary outcomes include self-care monitoring, self-care management, self-efficacy (OSCI), quality of life (Stoma specific quality of Life), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), adjustment (Ostomy Adjustment Inventory-23), stomal and peristomal complication rates, healthcare services utilization, mobility, and number of working days lost. Analyses will be performed per intention-to-treat and per protocol. Ethics and dissemination: This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the main center (registration number: 119/22). Following completion of the trial, dissemination meetings will be held to share the results of the study with the participants and the health-care team. Adoption of telehealth technologies for ostomy patients can improve service organization by ensuring better integration and continuity of care. If the remote intervention produces comparable effects to the in-person intervention, it would be wise to make telehealth education an alternative treatment for addressing the educational needs of uncomplicated postoperative ostomy patients. We use the concept of time–space paths (Gordon, Holland and Lahelma 2000) to explore how young people negotiate manageable educational pathways and experience educational engagement in alternative educational settings. For many young people in alternative settings, tight time–space paths (e.g. attending school on time) led to their disengagement from mainstream school settings, as mainstream schools did not accommodate the lives and needs of these young people. We draw on interviews with young people in alternative educational settings in Finland and Australia. We extend the discussion to two alternative time–space paths to explore how young people in alternative educational settings, while expressing a like and need for looser time–space paths to accommodate their difficult life circumstances, still need aspects of tight time–space paths to engage with education. We discuss strategies used in the alternative educational settings that enable the young people to develop a rhythm within their own time–space paths and a sense of agency and control in their learning environment. These strategies enabled communication and the development of positive relationships with teachers that led to a sense of belonging and their engagement with education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
