Promoting diversity in the scientific workforce is crucial for harnessing the potential of available talent and ensuring equitable access to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEM-M) careers. We have developed an innovative program called Postbaccalaureate Research Opportunity to Promote Equity in Learning (PROPEL) that provides scientific and career development training for postbaccalaureate scholars from historically excluded backgrounds in STEM-M fields with an interest in pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD degree. Our program is distinct from other postbaccalaureate programs in that scholars are hired by individual labs rather than funded centrally by the program. This funding mechanism removes the idea that central funding is necessary to encourage faculty to train diverse scholars and allows the program to scale dynamically according to the needs of the scientific community. The PROPEL program started in 2020 with six scholars and has since grown to an enrollment of over 100, making it the largest postbaccalaureate program for biomedical research in the country. Here, we describe the program structure and curriculum, our strategy for recruitment, the enrollment trends, the program demographics, metrics of scholar engagement, and outcomes for scholars who completed the program in 2023. Our experience demonstrates the strong demand from both scholars and faculty for programming of this type and describes the feasibility of implementation.

In this article the authors describe a well-known framework for equity in mathematics education and explain how they integrate it into multiple aspects of a mathematics methods course, including the clinical experiences in elementary school classrooms.

Research on eyewitness identification often involves exposing participants to a simulated crime and later testing memory using a lineup. We conducted a systematic review showing that pre-event instructions, instructions given before event exposure, are rarely reported and those that are reported vary in the extent to which they warn participants about the nature of the event or tasks. At odds with the experience of actual witnesses, some studies use pre-event instructions explicitly warning participants of the upcoming crime and lineup task. Both the basic and applied literature provide reason to believe that pre-event instructions may affect eyewitness identification performance. In the current experiment, we tested the impact of pre-event instructions on lineup identification decisions and confidence. Participants received non-specific pre-event instructions (i.e., "watch this video") or eyewitness pre-event instructions (i.e., "watch this crime video, you'll complete a lineup later") and completed a culprit-absent or -present lineup. We found no support for the hypothesis that participants who receive eyewitness pre-event instructions have higher discriminability than participants who receive non-specific pre-event instructions. Additionally, confidence-accuracy calibration was not significantly different between conditions. However, participants in the eyewitness condition were more likely to see the event as a crime and to make an identification than participants in the non-specific condition. Implications for conducting and interpreting eyewitness identification research and the basic research on instructions and attention are discussed.

We assess the identification accuracy of 'research grade' observations of lichens posted on the online platform iNaturalist. Our results show that these observations are frequently misidentified or lack the necessary chemical and (or) microscopic information for accurate identification. Lichens are a taxonomically difficult group, but they are ubiquitous and eye-catching and are regularly the subject of observations posted on iNaturalist. Therefore, we provide best practice recommendations for posting lichen observations and commenting on observations. Data from iNaturalist are a valuable tool for understanding and managing biodiversity, particularly at this crucial time when large scale biodiversity decline is occurring globally. However, the data must be accurate for them to effectively support biodiversity conservation efforts. Our recommendations are also applicable to other taxonomically difficult taxa. Background: Motor module (a.k.a. muscle synergy) analysis has frequently been used to provide insight into changes in muscle coordination associated with declines in walking performance, to evaluate the effect of different rehabilitation interventions, and more recently, to control exoskeletons and prosthetic devices. However, it remains unclear whether changes in muscle coordination revealed via motor module analysis stem from abnormal walking biomechanics or neural control. This distinction has important implications for the use of motor module analysis for rehabilitation interventions and device design. Thus, this study aims to elucidate the extent to which motor modules emerge from pathological walking biomechanics, i.e. abnormal walking biomechanics commonly observed in individuals with neurological disease and/or injury. Methods: We conducted a series of computer simulations using OpenSim Moco to simulate pathological walking biomechanics by manipulating speed, asymmetry, and step width in a three-dimensional musculoskeletal model. We focused on these spatiotemporal metrics because they are commonly altered in individuals with Parkinson's disease, stroke survivors, etc. and have been associated with changes in motor module number and structure. We extracted motor modules using nonnegative matrix factorization from the muscle activations from each simulation. We then examined how alterations in walking biomechanics influenced the number and structure of extracted motor modules and compared the findings to previous experimental studies. Results: The motor modules identified from our simulations were similar to those identified from previously published experiments of non-pathological walking. Moreover, our findings indicate that the same motor modules can be used to generate a range of pathological-like waking biomechanics by modulating their recruitment over the gait cycle. These results contrast with experimental studies in which pathological-like walking biomechanics are accompanied by a reduction in motor module number and alterations in their structure. Conclusions: This study highlights that pathological walking biomechanics do not necessarily require abnormal motor modules. In other words, changes in number and structure of motor modules can be a valuable indicator of alterations in neuromuscular control and may therefore be useful for guiding rehabilitation interventions and controlling exoskeletons and prosthetic devices in individuals with impaired walking function due to neurological disease or injury. Background: Advanced age brings a loss of plantar sensation, represented, for example, as higher sensation thresholds in standardized testing. This is thought to contribute to an increased risk of falls among older adults – an intuitive premise that has yet to be fully investigated, especially in the context of walking balance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the association between plantar sensation and the instability elicited by a suite of walking balance perturbations that differ in direction and context in a cohort of n = 28 older adults (73.0 ± 5.9 yrs). Methods: We measured plantar sensation using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and quantified margins of stability (MoS) and whole-body angular momentum (WBAM) during habitual walking and in response to optical flow perturbations, lateral waist-pull perturbations, and treadmill-induced slips. Results: Our two major results were that higher monofilament thresholds (i.e., worse plantar sensation) in older adults associated with: (1) larger anterior-posterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) MoS and increased transverse plane WBAM (p ≤ 0.031) during habitual walking, and (2) larger decreases in MoSAP, MoSML and larger increases in transverse plane WBAM in response to lateral waist pull perturbations (p ≤ 0.018). We found no associations between plantar sensation and responses to other perturbation contexts. Conclusions: We conclude that there is an association between worse plantar sensation and gait instability, both during habitual unperturbed walking and in response to some perturbation contexts. These results should build confidence that interventions designed to improve plantar sensation for older adults, possibly through insoles or footwear modifications, could be critical for reducing gait-related falls in at-risk populations. Introduction: Empathy is a fundamental element of high-quality healthcare, though it has been shown to be in decline among medical students and residents. Appeals have therefore been made for the development of evidence-based empathy-enhancing experiential learning and training models. Bringing Art to Life (BATL) is a service-learning program designed within experiential learning pedagogy for psychology and pre-healthcare students. Intergenerational relationships are fostered with people with dementia through art therapy and life story/narrative at a community-based adult day services center. Methods: In this sequential mixed methods study, quantitative data were collected via electronic surveys of students in this course compared with students in didactic introductory psychology or psychology and aging courses. Survey measures included empathy, mindfulness, positive and negative affect, future time perspective, and attitudes toward older adults and working with people with dementia. Weekly BATL student journals submitted as part of their course requirements were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Within-subjects analyses of variance revealed increases in empathy and positive affect, broadened time perspective, and improved attitudes toward older adults and people with dementia among students in the BATL course compared with other undergraduate students. Analysis of BATL student journals supported and deepened understanding of these findings, with themes including attitude change, relationship building fostering existential awareness and self-development, art fostering social interactions, and perceived program effectiveness. Discussion: The findings suggest that BATL strongly supports increased empathetic attitudes and decreased stigma of aging in psychology and pre-healthcare students. Intergenerational expressive arts-based programs like BATL should be implemented in healthcare education to enhance empathy and improve attitudes toward aging and dementia care. Rehabilitation to prevent falls should not only directly address intrinsic and extrinsic factors, but also the neuropsychology of falls to promote safe and independent mobility in our aging population. The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between falls self-efficacy and objective responses to a series of walking balance perturbations. 29 healthy younger adults and 28 older adults completed four experimental trials, including unperturbed walking and walking while responding to three perturbations: mediolateral optical flow, treadmill-induced slips, and lateral waist-pulls; and three self-reported questionnaires: Activity-specific Balance Confidence, Falls Efficacy Scale, and the Fear of Falling Questionnaire-Revised. We quantified stabilizing responses as a change in margin of stability from unperturbed walking. Older adults generally exhibited larger instability than younger adults in response to walking balance perturbations. Only the Fear of Falls Questionnaire-Revised showed an increase in perceived falls risk for older adults. We found no significant correlations for older adults between any balance perturbation response and questionnaires of self-perception. Given the disconnect between self-perceived falls risk and responses to walking balance perturbations, rehabilitation to prevent falls while maintaining mobility and independence will likely require personalized techniques that combine neuromuscular training with approaches for neurophysiological reeducation. Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen, particularly in vulnerable populations. Background: No vaccine for the prevention of HMPV is currently licensed, although several subunit vaccines are in development. Saponin-based adjuvant systems (AS), including QS-21, have transformed the field of subunit vaccines by dramatically increasing their potency and efficacy, leading to the development of several licensed vaccines. However, naturally sourced tree bark-extracted QS-21 faces supply and manufacturing challenges, hindering vaccine development. Objective: This study reports on an alternative plant cell culture system for the consistent production of highly pure QS-21. Method: We evaluated the efficacy of cultured plant cell (cpc)-produced QS-21 in a novel HMPV vaccine, formulating a recombinant pre-fusion stabilized HMPV F protein (preF) with cpcQS-21 and a synthetic toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist adjuvant formulation. Results: In mice, TLR4 agonist containing adjuvant formulations with plant cell-produced QS-21 performed equally to licensed adjuvant AS01 containing tree-bark-extracted QS-21 and demonstrated a significant increase in immunogenicity against HMPV preF compared to the unadjuvanted control. Conclusion: Our findings pave the way for a reliable, scalable, and sustainable source of pure QS-21, enabling the development of highly effective HMPV and other vaccines with significant public health impact. Currently, few studies have addressed public opinions regarding math education. The current study surveyed adults in a Midwestern town in the United States to assess opinions regarding math and math education. Overall, we found that adults believe that math is useful and that math education is important. We found that parents who currently have a child in elementary school believed that math should be taught at an earlier age and were more supportive of parents being responsible for math education outside of the classroom than other participants. In this paper, we discuss some of the implications of these findings for math education.

Encapsulation of human embryonic stem-cell-differentiated beta cell clusters (hES-βC) holds great promise for cell replacement therapy for the treatment of diabetics without the need for chronic systemic immune suppression. Here, we demonstrate a nanoporous immunoprotective polymer thin film cell encapsulation device that can exclude immune molecules while allowing exchange of oxygen and nutrients necessary for in vitro and in vivo stem cell viability and function. Biocompatibility studies show the device promotes neovascular formation with limited foreign body response in vivo. The device also successfully prevented teratoma escape into the peritoneal cavity of mice. Long-term animal studies demonstrate evidence of engraftment, viability, and function of cells encapsulated in the device after 6 months. Finally, in vivo study confirms that the device was able to effectively immuno-isolate cells from the host immune system.

According to International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines, all species must be assessed against all criteria during the Red Listing process. For organismal groups that are diverse and understudied, assessors face considerable challenges in assembling evidence due to difficulty in applying definitions of key terms used in the guidelines. Challenges also arise because of uncertainty in population sizes (Criteria A, C, D) and distributions (Criteria A2/3/4c, B). Lichens, which are often small, difficult to identify, or overlooked during biodiversity inventories, are one such group for which specific difficulties arise in applying Red List criteria. Here, we offer approaches and examples that address challenges in completing Red List assessments for lichens in a rapidly changing arena of data availability and analysis strategies. While assessors still contend with far from perfect information about individual species, we propose practical solutions for completing robust assessments given the currently available knowledge of individual lichen life-histories.
