Career centers are one of the pioneers in the move towards a paperless office through the utilization of the Internet for employee recruitment but they are seemingly among the last also to abandon the use of paper resumes. This development can be attributed to the persistent use by students of paper resumes in their application because only some colleges offer computer services. Even the human resource departments of some of the most technologically advanced firms don't have the necessary computers and software for employee recruitment.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' employment projections for the decade 1994-2005 rank computers, healthcare and human services as the hot professions. With growth in technology and health consciousness, these professions show significant increases in employment figures. However, employment analysts assert that a high growth area will demand self-motivation and self-promotion from the workers, making the job market a place for the most competent one. The work environment of 2005 will involve flexible work hours, shorter work weeks and a shared work culture.

The National Assn. of Colleges and Employees has opened a home page site on the Internet that will offer employment listings for college graduates. The on-line service also includes employment statistics, employee descriptions, surveys of employment trends and a resume database. Job listings are provided by region, title and experience level. Jobseekers can also join discussion groups on topics such as career planning and hiring. The service is available under http://www.jobweb.org.

College students can avail of their school's access to the Internet in searching for employment opportunities. They can ask for assistance from fellow job seekers by subscribing to a mailing list or usenet news group that can give advice on topics such as resume content, resume presentation or cautionary anecdotes on prospective employers. Home pages one the WorldWide Web also provide information on various companies and organizations, while databases provide job listings for a fee.

The winners of the 1992 College Placement Council (CPC) Awards of Excellence and the CPC/Chevron Outstanding Achievement Awards are presented. The former recognizes career planning and employment achievements while the latter cites creative career planning and placement programs. The CPC winners include New York University for audiovisual programs, Georgetown University for educational programming within an organization, University of Alberta for student publications and University of South Carolina-Aiken for research. The 1992 CPC/Chevron award went to the Pennsylvannia State University.

The National Assn of Colleges and Employers (NACE) introduced its Internet home page 'JobWeb' in 1995. JobWeb is a resource specially-designed for employers in search of entry-level employees and for career services professionals assisting students in finding jobs and preparing for careers. JobWeb presents and organizes information for employers with two jumping-off points featured on its home page. This includes the 'HR/Staffing Professional's Desktop,' which leads members to a comprehensive list of the human resources data on JobWeb.

Issues concerning sex discrimination based on pregnancy, presented in Nashville Gas Co. vs. Satty, and the Supreme Court's treatment of the issues are examined. The way in which the Satty opinion limits the scope of the General Electric Co. vs. Gilbert decision, and an analysis of the implications of the Satty decision are included. (JMD)

Surveys show that employers often look for experienced people to fill job vacancies because experienced job seekers are not only more mature and equipped with specific job skills but possess several soft skills as well. These soft skills are skills in communication, customer-service, leadership, teamworking and multi-tasking that help experienced job seekers either move within their fields or change their careers. While most employers find experienced candidates through career fairs,newspaper advertising, resume data bases and third-party recruiters, several are tapping colleges and alumni offices as resources.
