Abstract Background Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a prevalent hepatic condition linked to metabolic alterations. It gradually causes liver damage and potentially progresses to cirrhosis. Despite its significance, research, especially in the pediatric population, is limited, leading to contradictory findings in diagnosis and treatment. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing literature on therapeutic interventions for MASLD in children and adolescents. Methods A comprehensive search of randomized controlled clinical trials yielded 634 entries from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to 2023. Interventions included medications, behavioral modifications, dietary changes, probiotics, supplements, surgical procedures, or combinations. The analysis focused on studies with treatment duration of at least 3 months, employing a random-effects REML meta-analysis model. Treatment effects on anthropometric measurements and biochemical components were examined and adjusted for heterogeneity factors analysis. A bibliometric analysis for insights into research contributors was performed. Results The systematic review incorporated 31 clinical trials, with 24 meeting criteria for meta-analysis. These comprised 3 medication studies, 20 with supplements, 4 focusing on lifestyle, and 4 centered on diets. Significant overall treatment effects were observed for ALT, AST, BMI, and HOMA-IR mainly by supplements and lifestyle. Meta-regression identified age, BMI changes, and treatment duration as factors modifying ALT concentrations. Bibliometric analysis involving 31 linked studies highlighted contributions from 13 countries, with the USA, Spain, and Chile being the most influential. Conclusions We conclude that supplementation and lifestyle changes can effectively impact ALT and AST levels, which can help address liver issues in obese children. However, the evaluation of risk bias, the high heterogeneity, and the bibliometric analysis emphasize the need for more high-quality studies and broader inclusion of diverse child populations to provide better therapeutic recommendations. Abstract Background Molar–incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative enamel defect that is highly prevalent in children. It has been reported that patients with MIH have higher caries occurrence with an increased need and frequency of dental treatment compared to patients without MIH. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between MIH and a series of factors related to maternal health status during pregnancy and children´s medical history in early childhood. Methods A retrospective study of cases (patients with MIH) and controls (patients without MIH) was designed between 2023 and 2024. A total of 280 children (cases = 140; controls = 140) aged 6 to 14 years (138 boys and 142 girls) were examined according to the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria for MIH. A survey was carried out with mothers regarding the potential exposure of their children to etiological factors of MIH. Possible prenatal and postnatal etiological factors were obtained through a personal interview with the patients’ mothers. The statistical analysis was carried out with the contrast test and the chi-square test. Results During pregnancy, folic acid consumption, alcohol intake, systemic viral and/or bacterial infections, and gestational diabetes were statistically significantly related to MIH, as were breastfeeding, asthma, and corticosteroid consumption during childhood. Conclusions Although there are different factors that may have statistically significant relationships with MIH, they cannot be predicted. Therefore, longitudinal studies, with a large sample size, are needed to determine the influence of prenatal and postnatal factors on the prevalence and severity of MIH in children.

Abstract Chronic liver disease is closely linked to dietary intake factors, such as high consumption of simple carbohydrates including sucrose. In this study, the influence of sucrose on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver malignancy, was explored. Using the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN) to induce HCC in the rat, we co-administered sucrose with DEN. The co-administration significantly modified body, liver and pancreas weight, as well as, serum fatty acids and triglycerides. DEN caused liver structural alteration, fibrosis, and tumor formation; surprisingly, co-administration with sucrose restored hepatic lipids, improved liver architecture, and reduced fibrosis and tumor development. Sucrose intake negatively regulated tumor markers and cell proliferation, and reduced the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism and oxidative stress response. These findings highlight a hepatoprotective effect of sucrose during DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, underlining an intriguing role of high sucrose consumption during HCC development and providing new insights as well as possible pathways of cellular protection under sucrose intake on hepatocarcinogenesis.

Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Citrus fruit cultivation, especially mandarin oranges, is crucial to the economy of Nepal’s hilly regions due to their ideal geoclimatic conditions. Despite its economic importance, the sector faces several challenges, such as inadequate grafting techniques, low-quality saplings, and ineffective post-harvest storage. This paper explores these issues and proposes innovative solutions through the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. To address these challenges, we identified key areas for improvement. First, we focused on extending grafting practices during the off-season to ensure a higher success rate and better-quality saplings. Second, we examined different post-harvest storage methods to determine their effectiveness in terms of shelf life, decay loss, and quality of fruit. In addition to exploring post-harvest strategies, this paper provides preharvest recommendations for farmers, emphasizing methods to enhance fruit quality and longevity through effective pre-storage practices. Our IoT-based approach introduces off-season grafting in polyhouses and advanced monitoring for post-harvest storage. The results are promising: We achieved grafting success rates of 91% for acid lime and 92% for local mandarin orange varieties. Additionally, our research compared different post-harvest storage methods for mandarin oranges, including room, cellar, and cold chamber. We assessed these methods based on shelf life, physiological weight loss, and the total soluble solids (TSS) to titratable acidity (TA) ratio. The cold chamber proved to be the most effective method, offering superior conditions for storing mandarin oranges. The IoT-based monitoring system played a crucial role in maintaining optimal temperature, humidity, and gas content within the cold chamber, resulting in reduced post-harvest losses and extended shelf life. These findings highlight the transformative potential of IoT technology in mandarin orange cultivation and post-harvest storage.

Purpose This study assessed the long-term outcomes and quality of life in patients who underwent sacral neuromodulation (SNM) due to low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Methods This single-center retrospective study, conducted from 2005 to 2021, included 30 patients (21 men; median age, 70 years) who had undergone total mesorectal excision with stoma closure and had no recurrence at inclusion. All patients were diagnosed with LARS refractory to conservative treatment. We evaluated clinical and quality-of-life outcomes after SNM through a stool diary, Wexner score, LARS score, the Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life (FIQL) questionnaire, and EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) questionnaire. Results Peripheral nerve stimulation was successful in all but one patient. Of the 29 patients who underwent percutaneous nerve evaluation, 17 (58.62%) responded well to SNM and received permanent implants. The median follow-up period was 48 months (range, 18–153 months). The number of days per week with fecal incontinence episodes decreased from a median of 7 (range, 2–7) to 0.38 (range, 0–1). The median number of bowel movements recorded in patient diaries fell from 5 (range, 4–12) to 2 (range, 1–6). The median Wexner score decreased from 18 (range, 13–20) to 6 (range, 0–16), while the LARS score declined from 38.5 (range, 37–42) to 19 (range, 4–28). The FIQL and EQ-5D questionnaires demonstrated enhanced quality of life. Conclusion SNM may benefit patients diagnosed with LARS following rectal cancer surgery when conservative options have failed, and the treatment outcomes may possess long-term sustainability.

Abstract The interface dynamics of a droplet impacting onto a liquid pool has been well studied, and the common interfacial velocity quantified for the cases when the pool is both the same and a different fluid to the impacting droplet. In this work we investigate, experimentally and computationally, the scenario of a droplet impacting onto a pool of the same fluid coated by a layer of another fluid with various thicknesses. The effect of the film thickness on the penetration velocity of the upper droplet-film interface is measured for experiments and simulations, and carefully compared to theoretical predictions for early-to-moderate timescales in the limiting cases of: (i) zero film thickness, in which the film has no effect and thus behaves like a fluid on same fluid impact, and (ii) infinite film thickness, in which the underlying pool has no effect. For finite layer thickness cases we carefully quantify the transition between the two limiting scenarios, and provide insight into the interfacial and flow quantities of interest, with a robust transitional behaviour observed over a rich parametric landscape. This exploration provides new quantitative insight into the nonlinear behaviour of the multi-fluid systems in newly explored finite thickness regimes, as well as a clear delineation of their effect in the context of the noted distinguished limits, with films of up to one impacting drop diameter in thickness shown to induce meaningful interpretable changes in the resulting post-impact dynamics. We also explore longer timescale features of the lower interface dynamics, revealing comparatively lower velocities and larger film thicknesses as the liquid film viscosity is increased.

Background: Repair of chronic quadriceps tendon ruptures has high rates of rerupture and extensor lag. Dermal allograft augmentation of tendon repairs has shown to increase repair strength and healing rates. Indications: We supplement primary quadriceps repair with dermal allograft augmentation in cases where tissue degeneration has occurred secondary to a subacute or chronic nature to help facilitate incorporation of the tendon tissue to bone. Technique Description: The patient is a 30-year-old man who presented with a chronic quadriceps tendon rupture. Intraoperatively, the quadriceps tendon excursion was found to be adequate for primary repair. Two sets of fiber tapes were used to secure the quad tendon with Krackow stitches and were loaded onto 2 suture anchors and placed in the proximal pole of the patella. The medial and lateral anchor sutures and loops were fed through the medial and lateral aspects of the dermal allograft, respectively. To secure the dermal allograft, the stay suture from the medial anchor was passed through the knotless mechanism of the lateral anchor and vice versa. This allowed for a broad area of direct compression of the allograft against the site of repair at the tendon bone interface between the 2 anchors. Results: Chronic quadriceps tendon repairs are known to have poor outcomes with up to 10% rerupture rates and extensor lag of more than 5° in 22% of cases. Several studies have shown that dermal allograft augmentation of tendon repairs increases pullout strength, maximum load to failure, and healing rates. Discussion/Conclusion: Dermal allograft augmentations of chronic quadriceps rupture repair provide a scaffolding for cellular migration and collagen formation to help solidify the bone-tendon interface and may prove useful in addressing the reported high rates of rerupture and extensor lag. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute convened a virtual workshop in September 2022 to discuss “Optimal Instruments for Measurement of Diet, Physical Activity, and Sleep.” This report summarizes the proceedings, identifying current research gaps and future directions for measuring different lifestyle behaviors in adult population‐based studies. Key discussions centered on integrating report‐based methods, like questionnaires, with device‐based assessments, including wearables and physiological measures such as biomarkers and omics to enhance self‐reported metrics and better understand the underlying biologic mechanisms of chronic diseases. Emphasis was placed on the need for data harmonization, including the adoption of standard terminology, reproducible metrics, and accessible raw data, to enhance the analysis through artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. The workshop highlighted the importance of standardizing procedures for integrated behavioral phenotypes using time‐series data. These efforts aim to refine data accuracy and comparability across studies and populations, thereby advancing our understanding of lifestyle behaviors and their impact on chronic disease outcomes over the life course.

This paper presents a systematic and data-driven approach to prioritize interventions in urban areas with asbestos cement (AC) roofs, addressing the urgent need to mitigate asbestos-related risks. The objective is to propose a comprehensive methodology that considers multiple criteria at the neighborhood level, allowing for a nuanced assessment of intervention priorities.The methodology involves the normalization of various parameters, including population density, facility density, and the area covered by asbestos-cement roofs. In addition, an innovative aspect is introduced by incorporating weathering status identification data, represented as an index, validated in previous research, further enriching the evaluation process. The integration of these diverse factors allows for a holistic understanding of the risk landscape associated with AC roofs in urban settings.The cornerstone of the proposed approach is the development of a Priority Intervention Index (PII) at the neighborhood level. This index serves to standardize the assessment of intervention priorities, enabling a fair and transparent comparison across different regions. To enhance practical application, the PII is discretized into three categories, low, mid and high intervention priority. The results obtained are robust, replicable in other scenarios, and practical for decision-makers. The new methodology provides a structured and quantifiable approach to identify and prioritize areas for asbestos-related interventions based on well-defined criteria at the neighborhood level. The resulting prioritization strategy offers urban planners and local officials a clear and evidence-based tool to allocate resources efficiently and effectively manage the inherent risks associated with AC roofs in urban environments. The paper will describe how the prioritization can be applied “at the neighborhood level” by urban planners and local officials.

Abstract Achieving sustainable development is today a basic premise for all companies and governments. The 2030 Agenda has outlined an action plan focused on all areas and interest groups. Achieving economic growth and technological progress, social development, peace, justice, environmental protection, inclusion and prosperity represent the main areas to achieve social change. Furthermore, the circular economy is capable of improving the efficiency of products and resources, and can contribute to this social change, but there is a gap in the literature regarding whether the orientation of the companies in their circular economy strategy can lead to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. The objective of this study is to develop an initial circular economy-sustainable development goals (CE-SDGs) framework that considers the circular economy as the precedent and sustainable development goals as a consequence of implementing a circular economy. With respect to the methodology, the literature linking the relationship between the circular economy and sustainable development goals was reviewed first. A Structural Equation Model with the Partial Least Squares technique was also employed, analyzing two complementary models in enterprises involved in the Social Economy in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura (Spain). Regarding the results obtained, a link has been observed between professional profiles and training in people-oriented activities. The same does not occur for activities oriented toward the planet. Moreover, the existence of corporate reports that obtain data on circular activities is crucial to achieving orientation toward the sustainable development goals, for activities oriented toward both people and the planet. Finally, the results confirm that the existence of barriers and incentives determines the observed results, being aware that the lack of specialized training in human resources always has a significant incidence. Using resource and capability and dynamic capabilities theories, this study contributes with an initial framework by joining two lines of research and analyzing the CE-SDGs link in SE enterprises. Future research and empirical validations could contribute more deeply to the literature. As key recommendations, social economy managers must be committed to introducing circular economy practices to achieve people- and planet-oriented objectives, being proactive in fostering CE-SDGs frameworks.

Abstract Early breast cancer patients often experience relapse due to residual disease after treatment. Liquid biopsy is a methodology capable of detecting tumor components in blood, but low concentrations at early stages pose challenges. To detect them, next-generation sequencing has promise but entails complex processes. Exploring larger blood volumes could overcome detection limitations. Herein, a total of 282 high-volume plasma and blood-cell samples were collected for dual ctDNA/CTCs detection using a single droplet-digital PCR assay per patient. ctDNA and/or CTCs were detected in 100% of pre-treatment samples. On the other hand, post-treatment positive samples exhibited a minimum variant allele frequency of 0.003% for ctDNA and minimum cell number of 0.069 CTCs/mL of blood, surpassing previous investigations. Accurate prediction of residual disease before surgery was achieved in patients without a complete pathological response. A model utilizing ctDNA dynamics achieved an area under the ROC curve of 0.92 for predicting response. We detected disease recurrence in blood in the three patients who experienced a relapse, anticipating clinical relapse by 34.61, 9.10, and 7.59 months. This methodology provides an easily implemented alternative for ultrasensitive residual disease detection in early breast cancer patients.

This paper explores the gap in the literature on social responsibility guidance for start-ups and start-up investors. It begins by evaluating research conducted in two different fields (namely, socially responsible investment (SRI) and responsible research and innovation (RRI)) and how they can guide social responsibility in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) start-ups. To do this, we evaluate an industry-standard SRI catalogue of metrics - the Global Impact Investing Network's (GIIN) Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS+) - and indicators from 12 EC-funded RRI projects. Based on this analysis, we propose a framework of 24 indicators to assess the social responsibility of start-ups and investors. The purpose of our framework is twofold: firstly, to provide clear guidance for start-ups aiming to implement socially responsible behaviours, and secondly, to provide start-up investors with criteria to identify if start-ups are socially responsible. While the indicators are phrased in a prescriptive way for start-ups, they can also be used by investors to identify if start-ups are implementing the indicators in practice.

A network of agronomists, researchers, and practitioners associated with cacao farming provided open access to their independent field trials across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). A centralized dataset was assembled using qualitative and quantitative data from 25 experimental field trials (hereafter referred to as “CacaoFIT”) spanning several LAC agroecosystems. This dataset was used to document the main traits and agroclimatic attributes of the cacao cultivation model being tested within the CacaoFIT network. By synthesizing data from an entire network of cacao trials, this study aimed to highlight specific design features and management practices that may contribute to better cacao farming sustainability. The CacaoFIT network comprises 200 ha of field trials testing over 150 cacao genotypes and set up under different shade canopy design, management, and research goals. Small-sized trials were common across Mesoamerica, whereas medium to large-size trials were distinct to South America. Cacao trials were 15 years old (on average) and ranged from 3 to 25 years of establishment. Most cacao trials were managed conventionally (i.e., 55%), while 20% were under organic practices, and the remaining 25% presented both conventional and organic management approaches. Most field trials (ca. 60%) planted an average of 10 international clones or national cultivars at high (1,230–1,500 plants ha−1) and medium density (833–1,111 plants ha−1). Mixed shade canopies were the dominant agroforestry model, while timber vs. leguminous shade canopies were also common. The diversity and depth of research domains examined across the CacaoFIT network varied widely. Agronomy and agroforestry topics dominated the research agenda across all trials, followed by environmental services domains. Cacao physiology and financial performance were researched to a lesser extent within the network. Five featured field trials from CacaoFIT offered technical guidelines to inform cacao farming within similar contexts. This collaborative work is a scaffold to encourage public–private partnerships, capacity building, and data sharing amongst cacao researchers across the tropics.

En México la prevalencia de obesidad en población adulta es superior al 70 %, en particular el estado de Veracruz tiene una de las mayores prevalencias de sobrepeso y obesidad. El consumo de azúcar contribuye al desarrollo de estas enfermedades. Como alternativa los edulcorantes de Stevia rebaudiana (estevia), tienen gran aceptación. El diseño y validación de los instrumentos para recabar información sobre la estevia y sus productos es importante para reducir errores de los datos obtenidos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue diseñar y validar un instrumento sobre el uso y consumo de estevia en la zona conurbada Veracruz-Boca del Rio. Se generó una encuesta inicial con 10 preguntas sobre el consumo y el conocimiento general de la población sobre estevia, cuya validación se realizó por 18 expertos que evaluaron la validez y fiabilidad de cada pregunta. Finalmente, se realizó una prueba inicial de desempeño (n=100) de la encuesta. De los encuestados, 88 % conoce de las propiedades atribuidas a estevia, 69 % padece alguna enfermedad relacionada con el consumo de azúcar y la mayoría percibió beneficios con el consumo de la planta. Abstract Obesity and metabolic disorders have been associated with poor outcomes in non-Mediterranean breast cancer (BC) patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic potential of anthropometric variables in patients with early BC living in Southern Mediterranean region of Italy. We enrolled 955 consecutive early BC patients treated in hospitals in Naples between 2009 and 2013 (median follow-up 11.8-year ending 15/09/2022). Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) were collected. All-cause and BC-specific mortality were calculated. At the last day of contact 208 (22%) patients had died, 131 (14%) from BC. High WC (≥ 88 cm) or WHR (> 0.85) and the MetS were significantly associated with moderately increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR=1.39, 1.62, 1.61, respectively). A significant increased risk of BC-specific mortality was found in obese patients, in those with high WC, high WHR and those with MetS (HR=1.72, 1.71, 1.80, 1.81, respectively). Central obesity significantly increased total and BC-specific mortality particularly in pre-menopausal women and in luminal subtypes, while in post-menopause MetS was a stronger risk factor. Obesity and MetS may impair the effectiveness of BC therapies hence active lifestyle interventions are encouraged.

Objectives: Can the type of implant rehabilitation influence peri-implant bone loss in case of full-arch mandibular prosthesis? The purpose of the study was to assess, using orthopantomograms (OPGs), the bone loss around implants in different types of implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitations and identify potential risk factors, associated with the number and location of implants, that may have an association with bone defects. Methods: A radiographic study was conducted on 22,317 OPGs from 2010 to 2024. All OPGs with implant-supported prosthetic mandibular rehabilitations were included in the study. Results: A total of 155 OPGs were evaluated, with peri-implant bone loss identified in 64 (41.3%). Distal implants (furthest from the center) across various positioning patterns were most susceptible to bone loss, with positions 3.6 and 4.6 demonstrating the most frequent occurrence (25 and 26 cases, respectively). The χ2 test revealed significant associations between both the implant positioning pattern (p < 0.001) and number of implants (p < 0.001) with peri-implant bone loss. Also, by updating the sample of OPGs, increased susceptibility to bone resorption was found for implants placed distal to the mental foramen compared to mesial ones in full-arch-implant-supported fixed prostheses. Conclusions: Prospective clinical studies will therefore be useful in investigating this finding further.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread chronic pain, significant depression, and various neural abnormalities. Recent research suggests a reciprocal exacerbation mechanism between chronic pain and depression. In patients with FM, dysregulation of tryptophan (Trp) metabolism has been identified. Trp, an essential amino acid, serves as a precursor to serotonin (5-HT), a neuromodulator that influences mood, appetite, sleep, and pain perception through the receptors 5-HT1, 5-HT2, and 5-HT3. Additionally, Trp is involved in the kynurenine pathway, a critical route in the immune response, inflammation, and production of neuroactive substances and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). The activation of this pathway by pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ), leads to the production of kynurenic acid (KYNA), which has neuroprotective properties, and quinolinic acid (QA), which is neurotoxic. These findings underscore the crucial balance between Trp metabolism, 5-HT, and kynurenine, where an imbalance can contribute to the dual burden of pain and depression in patients with FM. This review proposes a novel therapeutic approach for FM pain management, focusing on inhibiting QA synthesis while co-administering selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors to potentially increase KYNA levels, thus dampening pain perception and improving patient outcomes.

Entrapped air pockets can cause failure in water distribution systems if air valves have not been appropriately designed for expelling air during filling manoeuvres performed by water utilities. One-dimensional mathematical models recently developed for studying this phenomenon do not consider the effect of blocking columns inside water pipelines. This research presents the development of a mathematical model for analysing the filling process in a pipeline with an undulating profile with various air valves, including blocking columns during starting-up water installations. The results show how different air pocket pressure peaks can be produced over transient events, which need to be analysed to ensure a successful procedure that guarantees pipeline safety during the pressure surge occurrence. In this study, an experimental set-up is analysed to observe the behaviour of two blocking columns during filling by comparing the air pocket pressure pulses.

Antecedentes: Los periodos de sequía en el Desierto Sonorense aumentan el interés por cultivos con baja huella hídrica. Stenocereus thurberi es una alternativa, incluyendo beneficios económicos para los pobladores. Hipótesis: La propagación vegetativa de tallos con areolas diferenciadas de Stenocereus thurberi con fines productivos, mostrará una alta supervivencia tomando en cuenta los patrones estacionales, actividad metabólica y asimilación de CO2, reflejando así la adaptabilidad, resistencia y productividad de la especie. Especie de estudio: Stenocereus thurberi. Sitio de estudio y fechas: Hermosillo, Sonora, México; 2014. Métodos: Se evaluó supervivencia de tallos propagados vegetativamente, producción de calor metabólico (CM) de areolas reproductivas, intercepción de luz diaria integrada (LDI) y asimilación instantánea de CO2. Resultados: Los tallos mostraron una supervivencia del 100 %, crecimiento vegetativo anual de 9.3 ± 0.6 cm y producción de 2.0 ± 0.8 frutos por tallo. La mayor cantidad de LDI se registró en mayo (27.2 mol m-2 d-1) y el lado oeste (23.4 mol m-2 d-1). Las areolas reproductivas mostraron mayor producción de CM en mayo con 2 µW mg-1 peso seco (ps) y el mayor gasto energético con 1,759.6 kJ mol-1. La menor tasa respiratoria en areolas fue en junio con 0.003 nmol mg-1s-1 mg-1 ps. Las tasas de mayor asimilación de CO2 se presentaron en marzo, septiembre y octubre con 6.3, 3.8 y 6.5 µmol CO2 m-2s-1, respectivamente. Conclusiones: Es posible reproducir vegetativamente pitayas a partir de tallos con areolas reproductivas diferenciadas con fines productivos, promoviendo un cultivo eficiente con bajo consumo de agua y potencial económico.

Abstract Introduction To date, lung cancer is one of the most lethal diagnoses worldwide. A variety of lung cancer treatments and modalities are available, which are generally presented during the patient and doctor consultation. The implementation of decision tools to facilitate patient's decision‐making and the management of their healthcare process during medical consultation is fundamental. Studies have demonstrated that decision tools are helpful to promote health management and decision‐making of lung cancer patients during consultations. The main aim of the present work within the I3LUNG project is to systematically review the implementation of decision tools to facilitate medical consultation about oncological treatments for lung cancer patients. Methods In the present study, we conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. We used an electronic computer‐based search involving three databases, as follows: Embase, PubMed, and Scopus. 10 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included. They explicitly refer to decision tools in the oncological context, with lung cancer patients. Results The discussion highlights the most encouraging results about the positive role of decision aids during medical consultations about oncological treatments, especially regarding anxiety, decision‐making, and patient knowledge. However, no one main decision aid tool emerged as essential. Opting for a more recent timeframe to select eligible articles might shed light on the current array of decision aid tools available. Conclusion Future review efforts could utilize alternative search strategies to explore other lung cancer‐specific outcomes during medical consultations for treatment decisions and the implementation of decision aid tools. Engaging with experts in the fields of oncology, patient decision‐making, or health communication could provide valuable insights and recommendations for relevant literature or research directions that may not be readily accessible through traditional search methods. The development of guidelines for future research were provided with the aim to promote decision aids focused on patients' needs.

Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) has short shelf-life due to the high metabolic activity of the apical meristems. Storage at low temperature and high relative humidity is used commercially to keep fresh asparagus spears. Techniques denominated “Hurdley technologies” (UV-C or gamma irradiation) have been tested in fruits and vegetables to extend postharvest life. These technologies were used to extend postharvest shelf life of asparagus spears by inhibition of meristematic activity. Spears were irradiated with UV-C at dosages of 2.46, and 4.93 kJ m-2 and gamma irradiation at 1 and 1.5 kGy, before storage at 2°C and 90% relative humidity (RH) for 20 days. Metabolic heat (Rq) was measured in apical meristems, as well as whole spear respiration, sugars content, water potential components and color descriptors. Metabolic heat and whole spears respiration rate did not show differences due to effect of UV-C treatments, while spears treated with gamma radiation showed a metabolic activity inhibition of 10 and 15% for 1 and 1.5 kGy, respectively, while whole spear respiration rate was not affected. Changes in color variables showed a slight reduction in gloss. Sugars content in UV-C remained unchanged, while gamma radiation induced a reduction in glucose. An increase in fresh weight loss was noticeable on those treated with gamma irradiation. No changes in water potential components were observed. It was concluded the treatments used did not reported positive benefits in extending asparagus spears shelf life.

Global concern regarding climate change is prompting the development of strategies to improve the resistance of plants to abiotic stresses. Drought is one of the main threats that affect the productivity of rainfed crops, such as T. zygis ssp. gracilis. Plants under stressful conditions may generate a “memory” that allows them to cope more effectively with future stress. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine whether the pre-treatment of thyme with high-intensity light-emitting diode light (light priming) could enhance its physiological response and activation of its antioxidant defense system to subsequent severe drought. To that end, physiological parameters including relative water content, and proline and abscisic acid levels, photosynthetic pigment and tocochromanols content, phenolic profiles, antioxidant capacity, and lipid peroxidation were quantified using 1600 clones from 20 ecotypes. Results confirmed the negative effect of drought on overall plant status, but also showed a positive effect of light priming, this improved the antioxidant system response in around of 70 % of ecotypes of red thyme. Specifically, light pre-treatment was associated with smaller reduction in content of photosynthetic pigments and tocochromanols, higher caffeic acid dimethyl ether content, and reduced lipid peroxidation in response to drought. Light priming may generate a “memory” that helps thyme overcome subsequent oxidative stress.

There exist many research papers which pointed out the positive effects of using the mulching technique in stressful conditions, showing crop productivity and physicochemical quality improvement of the product. We hypothesized that a novel organic liquid mulching formulations (hydromulching) can be used in sustainable agricultural production under drought stress through both their direct influence on physicochemical and biological soil properties as well as by their effect on plant hormonal balance leading to the improvement of crop yield and quality. Artichoke plants were grown on bare soil (BS) or mulched with traditional polyethylene (PE) or with three different types of ecological hydromulching treatments obtained from recycled additives, namely: substrate used for mushroom cultivation (MS), rice hulls (RH) and wheat straw (WS); and were subjected to optimal (100% ETc) and reduced (70% ETc) irrigation regimes. Under water limitation, soil organic matter and carbon and mineral soil concentrations increased in the hydromulched soils (by 60% on average). Mulched treatments produced the highest crop yield (by 40% on average) attributed to increased artichoke head fresh weight, giving rise to the improvement of the important physical quality parameters in artichoke: color, firmness, and size. Furthermore, hydromulched treatments induced higher content of mineral nutrients in artichoke heads, while sugar concentrations were superior in non-mulched soil due to a major exposure to water stress. This may be related to the diminished carbohydrate metabolism activity under drought stress, including notable changes in the hormonal balance. The crosstalk of growth-promoting hormones (cytokinins) with the stress-related hormone factors (ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid) has been shown to regulate adaptive responses such as sugar osmoregulation in artichoke heads under drought stress. Altogether, these results demonstrate that hydromulching is a sustainable alternative to plastic films to cope with drought stress by improving yield and physical quality characteristics of artichoke heads and maintaining their chemical and nutritional quality over bare soil.

Abstract Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. We provide extensive plot meta-data, including tree density, tree alpha-diversity and tree species-richness results and gridded maps at 0.1-degree resolution.

Abstract Backgrounds The aim of this longitudinal clinical study is to analyse and compare according to location, degree and type, the pain presented by patients during their first year of treatment, as well as the quality of oral life after the placement of two types of orthodontic appliances: conventional brackets and removable Invisalign ® aligners. Methods The sample consisted of 140 patients grouped into 2 study groups of 70 patients each. The first group (brackets group- BG), with fixed multibracket appliances, using the MBT technique and a 0.022” slot. The second group (invisaling group- IG), in treatment with removable aligners (IG), using the Invisalign ® system. They were providen with a questionnare where they had to record the degree (mild, moderate or intense), the type and location of the pain monthly during the first year of treatment. The second form was the Spanish version of the OHIP-14, oral quality of life questionnaire, which was provided the twelfth month after the start of treatment. Results In both groups, we found that the most frequent location of pain occurred during the first phase: mandibular for the IG group and maxillary in the BG group. Throughout the whole analysis, the intensity was mild-moderate with lower values in the conventional brackets’ group. The BG group reported acute pain while the IG group reported sensitive pain during the first month; later both reported sensitive pain. Conclusions There are differences in terms of periodontal pain in its degree, location, and type according to the different orthodontic techniques used. Trial registration The study was approved by the bioethics committee of the University of Salamanca (USAL_20/516).

Background: The human being is defined as a ‘superorganism’ since it is made up of its own cells and microorganisms that reside inside and outside the human body. Commensal microorganisms, which are even ten times more numerous than the cells present in the body, perform very important functions for the host, as they contribute to the health of the host, resist pathogens, maintain homeostasis, and modulate the immune system. In the mouth, there are different types of microorganisms, such as viruses, mycoplasmas, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protozoa, often organized in communities. The aim of this umbrella review is to evaluate if there is a connection between the oral microbiome and systematic diseases. Methodology: A literature search was conducted through PubMed/MEDLINE, the COCHRANE library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases without any restrictions. Because of the large number of articles included and the wide range of methods and results among the studies found, it was not possible to report the results in the form of a systematic review or meta-analysis. Therefore, a narrative review was conducted. We obtained 73.931 results, of which 3593 passed the English language filter. After the screening of the titles and abstracts, non-topic entries were excluded, but most articles obtained concerned interactions between the oral microbiome and systemic diseases. Discussion: A description of the normal microbial flora was present in the oral cavity both in physiological conditions and in local pathological conditions and in the most widespread systemic pathologies. Furthermore, the therapeutic precautions that the clinician can follow in order to intervene on the change in the microbiome have been described. Conclusions: This review highlights what are the intercorrelations of the oral microbiota in healthy subjects and in subjects in pathological conditions. According to several recent studies, there is a clear correlation between dysbiosis of the oral microbiota and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: the aim of the study was to assess, through orthopantomograms (OPGs), the existence of peri-implant bone loss of distal implants in implant-supported full-arch mandibular restorations. A comparison between full-arch implant-supported rehabilitations performed in the inter-foraminal region and full-arch rehabilitations that include implant insertion distal to the mental foramen was conducted. Methods: a retrospective observational analysis of 17,950 OPGs from 2010 to 2020 was conducted. The presence of fixed implant-supported prostheses in a fully edentulous mandible was the inclusion criteria of the study. OPGs were divided according to the number of implants (four, six, and eight), position of the implants (mesial or distal to the mental foramen), and positioning patterns (models 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5). Results: a total of 51 OPGs were included in the study, 19 of which showed peri-implant bone loss. In particular, 16 belonged to the six-implant rehabilitation group and 3 to the eight-implant rehabilitation group; none of the four-implant-supported rehabilitations were affected by peri-implant bone loss. In all rehabilitations affected by peri-implant bone loss, the distal implant was the most involved, in particular the implant in positions 36 and 46. Conclusions: implants distal to the mental foramina are more susceptible than mesial implants to bone resorption in full-arch fixed implant-supported prostheses. This significant difference should be investigated further for the presence and synergy of biomechanical factors that could act predominantly in this area, such as mandibular flexure and occlusal loading.

El Camino del Lignum Crucis (Camino), como parte de la red de caminos que conducen a la Ciudad Santa de Caravaca de la Cruz, discurre por el municipio de Ulea, con un rico patrimonio cultural y natural. Conocer este patrimonio como recurso turístico y su contribución a la valorización del Camino constituye el objeto de este trabajo. Se realizaron consultas bibliográficas y geolocalizaciones en campo y se elaboró cartografía. El río, los yesos de Ulea, la sierra de La Navela, los yacimientos arqueológicos, la iglesia y la veneración de la cruz, constituyen un destacado recurso de valorización del Camino y atractor turístico.

Aim: To explore the differential characteristics in sociodemographic variables, severity of consumption, psychopathological symptomatology, life maladjustment, trauma characteristics, and post-traumatic stress symptomatology between women and men who seek treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) and have experienced lifetime physical and/or sexual abuse. Method: The sample consisted of 26 women and 31 men who had experienced physical/sexual abuse and sought treatment for SUD. Results: Women had been victims of sexual abuse in a significantly higher percentage than men. Women presented a significantly higher frequency of revictimization to another traumatic event and a significantly higher presence of avoidance symptoms than men. Conclusions: This study supports the existence of a more severe profile in women than in men with SUD who have experienced lifetime physical and/or sexual abuse. Consequently, gender-related trauma-informed practice in SUD treatment programmes should be promoted. More research in this field is needed, as this is a preliminary study.

Abstract The oil and gas industry is enmeshed in a continuous debate regarding the negative impact that its activity has on the sustainability of the environment. Increasingly, the market and stakeholders are positively evaluating those firms which are socially responsible and penalizing those that are not. Literature has analyzed the market view through the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) controversies and their relationship with Corporate Financial Performance (CFP), as well as with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. This study analyzes the influence of ESG controversies as a moderating variable on the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance factors and Corporate Financial Performance from a market valuation perspective. To perform this analysis, PLS-SEM structural equations have been applied to a sample of 264 oil and gas firms globally. The results confirm the moderating influence of ESG controversies on the relationship between E, S, and G factors and Corporate Financial Performance.

Abstract One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal type, with ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibiting higher sapling densities with increasing adult densities than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. Moreover, we found evidence of positive CMDD for tree species of both mycorrhizal types. Collectively, these findings indicate that mycorrhizal interactions likely play a foundational role in global forest diversity patterns and structure.

Acromegaly is a condition most commonly diagnosed in the fifth decade of life and has numerous treatment options. In this regard, Mycapssa® is the first FDA-approved oral octreotide capsule for treating acromegaly, combining the efficacy of the somatostatin receptor ligand, octreotide, with the ease of a twice-daily oral capsule. Where surgical treatment is not an option, somatostatin analogs, including octreotide, are the first line of medical treatment for acromegaly, requiring regular subcutaneous or intramuscular injections administered by a patient’s healthcare provider. Octreotide capsules (Mycapssa®) provide an alternative to these somatostatin receptor ligand injections by combining octreotide with other excipients to produce a transient permeability enhancer technology that improves paracellular transport of octreotide across the gastrointestinal wall into the small intestine. Across multiple trials, including open-label (CH-ACM-01), double-blind placebo-controlled (CHIASMA OPTIMAL), and open-label extension of the trial period (CHIASMA OPTIMAL OLE), Mycapssa® octreotide capsules maintained a consistent biochemical normalization of IGF-1 and GH levels, safety profiles similar to injected somatostatin receptor ligands, and patient preference to continued treatment with octreotide capsules. While clinical trial data supports the use of octreotide capsules (Mycapssa®) in the pharmacological management of GH and IGF-1 levels, very little data exist regarding the drug’s efficacy, tolerability, and use in female or pediatric-specific populations. A better understanding of the efficacy, application, and role of oral octreotide capsules in the long-term medical management of acromegaly in a diversity of populations is imperative to best determine the risks/benefits for the clinician.

Water leakages are assessed with an extended period simulation (traditional analysis) in water distribution networks. However, when rapid manoeuvres regulate valves, the conventional analysis proves unsuitable for representing the water volume of leaks. Under these circumstances, the Rigid Water Column Model can be utilised to accurately compute the quantity of water volume leaks. This method has been applied to single and parallel pipelines to predict water leakages, considering the opening and closure manoeuvres of regulating valves. This research develops governing equations using the Rigid Column Model to predict water volume leaks in a general scheme of series pipelines, accounting for the opening and closure manoeuvres in regulating valves. The practical application involves two branches of a series pipeline with internal pipe diameters of 0.45 and 0.25 m and pipe lengths of 1200 and 1400 m, respectively. The results of this practical application demonstrate the accuracy of the Rigid Column Model and its relevance in real-world scenarios. For instance, the model shows that traditional analysis can overestimate water volume leaks by approximately 72% when a closure manoeuvre regulates valves for 200 s and by about 28% for 30 s, highlighting the need for a more accurate method.

Water utilities are concerned about the issue of pipeline collapses, as service interruptions lead to water shortages. Pipeline collapses can occur during the maintenance phase when water columns compress entrapped air pockets, consequently increasing the pressure head. Analysing entrapped air pockets is complex due to the necessity of numerically solving a system of differential equations. Currently, water utilities need more tools to perform this analysis effectively. This research provides a numerical solution to the problem of entrapped air pockets in pipelines which can be utilised to predict filling operations. The study develops an analytical solution to examine the filling process. A practical application is shown, considering a 600 m long pipeline with an internal diameter of 400 mm. Compared with existing mathematical models, the results of the new analytical equations demonstrate their effectiveness as a new tool for computing the main hydraulic and thermodynamic variables involved in this issue.

(1) Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition with widespread pain and multiple comorbidities, for which conventional therapies offer limited benefits. The reserpine-induced myalgia (RIM) model is an efficient animal model of FMS in rodents. This study aimed to develop a pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic (PK–PD) model of reserpine in rats, linking to its impact on monoamines (MAs). (2) Methods: Reserpine was administered daily for three consecutive days at dose levels of 0.1, 0.5, and 1 mg/kg. A total of 120 rats were included, and 120 PK and 828 PD observations were collected from 48 to 96 h after the first dose of reserpine. Non-linear mixed-effect data analysis was applied for structural PK–PD model definition, variability characterization, and covariate analysis. (3) Results: A one-compartment model best described reserpine in rats (V = 1.3 mL/kg and CL = 4.5 × 10−1 mL/h/kg). A precursor-pool PK–PD model (kin = 6.1 × 10−3 mg/h, kp = 8.6 × 10−4 h−1 and kout = 2.7 × 10−2 h−1) with a parallel transit chain (k0 = 1.9 × 10−1 h−1) characterized the longitudinal levels of MA in the prefrontal cortex, spinal cord, and amygdala in rats. Reserpine stimulates the degradation of MA from the pool compartment (Slope1 = 1.1 × 10−1 h) and the elimination of MA (Slope2 = 1.25 h) through the transit chain. Regarding the reference dose (1 mg/kg) of the RIM model, the administration of 4 mg/kg would lead to a mean reduction of 65% (Cmax), 80% (Cmin), and 70% (AUC) of MA across the brain regions tested. (4) Conclusions: Regional brain variations in neurotransmitter depletion were identified, particularly in the amygdala, offering insights for therapeutic strategies and biomarker identification in FMS research.

Prosthechea karwinskii is an endemic orchid of Mexico with cultural significance for its ornamental, food, religious, and medicinal uses. In traditional medicine, diabetic patients use the leaves of this plant to lower glucose levels. The present study evaluated the effect of P. karwinskii leaves extract on the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in a model of obese rats with insulin resistance for its nutraceutical potential to reduce insulin resistance and oxidative stress. Obesity and insulin resistance were induced with 40% sucrose in water for 20 weeks. Four groups (control rats, obese rats, obese rats administered the extract, and obese rats administered metformin) were evaluated. Extract compounds were identified by UHPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS/MS. Glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and insulin resistance indices (HOMA-IR and TyG), as well as the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, increased in rats in the obese group. Administration of P. karwinskii extract and metformin reduced glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and insulin resistance indices and antioxidant enzyme activity to values similar to those of the control group. Therefore, this study shows the nutraceutical potential of P. karwinskii extract as an ingredient in the formulation of dietary supplements or functional foods to help treat diseases whose pathophysiology is related to oxidative stress and insulin resistance.

A description of new antimicrobial agents suitable for food industries has become necessary, and natural compounds are being considered as promising sources of new active derivatives to be used with the aim of improving food safety. We have previously described desirable antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against foodborne bacteria by analogs to A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) with a nitro (NO2) group at carbon 6 of the A-ring. We report herein the synthesis of eight additional analogs with chloro and bromo atoms at the A-ring and the systematic study of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in order to evaluate their possible application as biocides or food preservatives, as well as to elucidate new structure–activity relationships. The results from this study show that halogenated analogs to natural A-type proanthocyanidins rise above the nitro derivatives previously reported in their antimicrobial activities. Gram-positive bacteria are the most sensitive to all the analogs and combinations assayed, showing MICs from 10 to 50 μg/mL in most cases, as well as reductions in biofilm formation and the disruption of preformed biofilms of at least 75%. Some structure–activity relationships previously described have also been corroborated. Analogs with just one OH group at the B-ring show better antimicrobial activities than those with two OH groups, and those analogs with two or three OH groups in the whole structure are more active than those with four OH groups. In addition, the analogs with two OH groups at the B-ring and chloro at the A-ring are the most effective when antibiofilm activities are studied, especially at low concentrations.

Artificial structures act as points of entry for non-indigenous species (NIS) in port areas and may support higher abundance and richness of them. The studies about NIS are increasing, but studies focusing on the variations in temporal recruitment and ecological mechanisms are still scarce. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine the colonization and development of non-indigenous sessile fouling species over two types of substrates (electrolytic carbonated and steel) during 12 months of immersion in the Alicante harbor. The biofouling communities of both substrates were analyzed in terms of abundance and species richness by status (native, cryptogenic, and NIS), and NIS assemblages of both substrates were studied by means of multivariate analyses. In total, 53 different species were identified, 38 in steel (six NIS and six cryptogenic) and 50 in the carbonated substrate (six NIS and 10 cryptogenic). Most NIS were more abundant and diverse after 9 months of immersion and had a preference for carbonated substrates. Furthermore, most of them were positively correlated in both substrates (mainly in steel) and it is noted that the number of NIS in the port of Alicante is increasing as new records have been detected.

The use of free gingival graft (FGG) and connective tissue graft (CTG) from the palate are among the most predictable periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery procedures. However, palatal harvesting causes severe discomfort in the palatal area in patients undergoing harvesting. The aim of this umbrella review is to evaluate which products or techniques can result in fewer side effects and less morbidity in patients. Systematic reviews, with meta-analysis or not, about postoperative pain and wound healing in patients undergoing surgery to remove a free gingival graft or connective tissue graft from the palatal region, published only in the English language, were electronically searched for on BioMed Central, Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, the Cochrane library databases, and PROSPERO register. Of 1153 titles, only 7 articles were included in this review. The reviews included suggest that the more effective interventions for patient-reported outcomes, particularly for pain management, are cyanoacrylate adhesives, platelet-rich fibrin, hyaluronic acid, and the use of palatal stents. Low-level laser therapy also demonstrated good results in palatal wound healing speed after FGG procedures. Also, topical agents were also described. Future studies and more high-quality randomized clinical trials are needed to provide clear descriptions and standardized procedures of interventions to obtain clear results.

Abstract Patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) exhibit non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep disturbances in addition to memory deficits. Disruption of NREM slow waves occurs early in the disease progression and is recapitulated in transgenic mouse models of beta-amyloidosis. However, the mechanisms underlying slow-wave disruptions remain unknown. Because astrocytes contribute to slow-wave activity, we used multiphoton microscopy and optogenetics to investigate whether they contribute to slow-wave disruptions in APP/PS1 mice. The power but not the frequency of astrocytic calcium transients was reduced in APP/PS1 mice compared to nontransgenic controls. Optogenetic activation of astrocytes at the endogenous frequency of slow waves restored slow-wave power, reduced amyloid deposition, prevented neuronal calcium elevations, and improved memory performance. Our findings revealed malfunction of the astrocytic network driving slow-wave disruptions. Thus, targeting astrocytes to restore circuit activity underlying sleep and memory disruptions in AD could ameliorate disease progression.

This research analyzes the monthly drinking water consumption in the residential sector of 46 Ecuadorian towns to determine if there was greater consumption duringthe quarantine’s isolation due to COVID-19 thanthe historical values. Over 28million data were analyzed previously throughthe Box and Whisker Test, ANOVA,and Tukey to getthe average monthly consumption (CMM) and the historical maximums (CMH) for eachyear ofregistration. The standard deviation is calculated to compare the maximum consumption during quarantine (CMC) with the historical one. No town has quarantine consumption more significantthan the historical maximum, but a third of the sample reaches the historical maximum during isolation, which shouldraiseconcernsdue to recurring natural or anthropic emergencies. Consumption during the months of isolation (March, April, May,and June of 2020) hasdistinct patternsthan those of the historical ones and are attributed to migration caused by fear and unemployment caused by COVID-19, which directly affect drinking water consumption.

Objetivo: el objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el impacto de una intervención educativa grupal en el personal de salud para mejorar su práctica de ejercicio físico y la prescripción de esta a sus pacientes. Metodología: diseño preexperimental con medidas repetidas en un solo grupo, compuesto por personal de la salud (n = 17). Resultados: en el personal de salud se encontró un incremento en la motivación hacia la práctica de ejercicio físico (Likert, pre: 56 vs. 3 meses: 61). La principal motivación fue mantener un buen estado de salud, con un incremento del 18 % a los 6 meses con respecto del inicio. Sin embargo, también se identificó una reducción en el tiempo de práctica semanal de ejercicio físico, en la intensidad moderada (mediana, pre 120 minutos [75 - 210], tres meses 105 minutos [45 - 180], seis meses 60 minutos [50 - 135]) y en la vigorosa (mediana, pre 300 minutos [121,5 - 360], tres meses 60 minutos [30 - 120], seis meses 30 minutos [30 - 60]). La prescripción de ejercicio físico mejoró en frecuencia (pre 23 %, tres meses 36 %, seis meses 30 %) y componentes, además se acompañó de una reducción de los minutos/semana que el paciente la practicaba. Conclusiones: una intervención educativa grupal para el personal de salud puede influenciar de manera positiva algunos componentes actitudinales a favor de su práctica de ejercicio físico y la prescripción de este en sus pacientes, pero afecta negativamente su práctica en ambos grupos.

The brain cortex is the structure that is typically injured in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is anatomically connected with other brain regions, including the striatum and hypothalamus, which are associated in part with motor function and the regulation of body temperature, respectively. We investigated whether a TBI extending to the striatum could affect peripheral and core temperatures as an indicator of autonomic thermoregulatory function. Moreover, it is unknown whether thermal modulation is accompanied by hypothalamic and cortical monoamine changes in rats with motor function recovery. The animals were allocated into three groups: the sham group (sham), a TBI group with a cortical contusion alone (TBI alone), and a TBI group with an injury extending to the dorsal striatum (TBI + striatal injury). Body temperature and motor deficits were evaluated for 20 days post-injury. On the 3rd and 20th days, rats were euthanized to measure the serotonin (5-HT), noradrenaline (NA), and dopamine (DA) levels using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We observed that TBI with an injury extending to the dorsal striatum increased core and peripheral temperatures. These changes were accompanied by a sustained motor deficit lasting for 14 days. Furthermore, there were notable increases in NA and 5-HT levels in the brain cortex and hypothalamus both 3 and 20 days after injury. In contrast, rats with TBI alone showed no changes in peripheral temperatures and achieved motor function recovery by the 7th day post-injury. In conclusion, our results suggest that TBI with an injury extending to the dorsal striatum elevates both core and peripheral temperatures, causing a delay in functional recovery and increasing hypothalamic monoamine levels. The aftereffects can be attributed to the injury site and changes to the autonomic thermoregulatory functions.

An evolutionary approach on the study of the funerary systems in Late Prehistory allows recognizing diverse contexts of social crises in the north of Iberia. The analysis of the radio-chronological data that we have compiled indicates five phases of use—with the newness of identifying two different cycles during the Late Neolithic—and of subsequent ‘abandonment’ in the megaliths; this is reduced to two phases in the case of the sepulchral caves. We interpret the radio-chronological results through an examination of the material culture present in the graves and dynamics of the megalithic architecture. In addition, we contrast our results with different approaches, carrying out a complementary multidisciplinary approach. In this regard, we found that megalithism served as a vehicle for responding to the different crisis and changes faced by increasingly complex and unequal human groups.

Background: Despite research demonstrating that those who use e-cigarettes, also known as vaping, express an interest in quitting, evidence-based vaping cessation interventions are lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of an mHealth vaping cessation intervention. Methods: Adults (N?=?51) who were vaping nicotine were recruited online and enrolled in a 6-week mHealth intervention combining nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), self-guided cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and coaching support through telephone and asynchronous messaging. Feasibility and self-reported 7- and 30-day abstinence were assessed at baseline and 1-month postquit date. Results: The majority of participants completed treatment (45/51) and found the intervention helpful in supporting their vaping behavior change objectives. At 1-month postquit date, 48.9% (22/45) of study completers reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence and 28.8% (13/45) reported continuous 30-day abstinence. Conclusions: Findings provide preliminary support for an mHealth intervention approach to vaping cessation combining remote CBT-based coaching with NRT.
