The home-field advantage (HFA) hypothesis establishes that plant litter decomposes faster at ‘home’ sites than in ‘away’ sites due to more specialized decomposers acting at home sites. This hypothesis has predominantly been tested through ‘yes or no’ transplanting experiments, where the litter decomposition of a focal species is quantified near and away from their conspecifics. Herein, we evaluated the occurrence and magnitude of home-field effects on the leaf litter decomposition of Myrcia ramuliflora (O.Berg) N. Silveira (Myrtaceae) along a natural gradient of conspecific litterfall input and also if home-field effects are affected by litter and soil traits. Litter decomposition of M. ramuliflora was assessed through litterbags placed in 39 plots in a tropical heath vegetation over a period of 12 months. We also characterized abiotic factors, litter layer traits, and litter diversity. Our results indicated the occurrence of positive (i.e. Home-field advantage) and negative (i.e. Home-field disadvantage) effects in more than half of the plots. Positive and negative effects occurred in a similar frequency and magnitude. Among all predictors tested, only the community weighted mean C/N ratio of the litterfall input was associated with home-field effects. Our results reinforce the lack of generality for home-field effects found in the literature and thus challenge the understanding of litter-decomposer interaction in tropical ecosystems.

SummaryMany biomes still lack an overall view of their macro-functional structure (i.e., natural biogeographical regions and zones), including the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot. The effective design of protected areas depends on the spatial identification of units with ecologically distinct content, whether it be floristic, phylogenetic or functional. This study used a regionalization approach to identify the potential functional regions of the Atlantic Forest by interpolating functional data from forest remnants into the entire original occurrence area of the biome, including deforested lands. Conservation status was then estimated. Analysis of seven traits of leaf, wood, seed and plant size revealed that the biome is structured over 14 functional regions and three zones (clusters of regions). Functional regions represented specific combinations of traits rather than being characterized by extremely high or low values of a single trait. They retained an average of 29.5% of forest remnants (range: 7.63–54.66%) and 10.82% of protected areas (range: 0.35–35.78%). By analysing the functional space occupied by all regions, captured by two principal component analysis axes using the pixel-level information contained in interpolated trait maps, we showed that large parts of this space were not covered by forest remnants or protected areas and that the most represented regions had serious deficits in protected areas. Although the Serra do Mar mountain range in the south and south-east Atlantic Forest is relevant as a centre of species endemism and richness and has received considerable attention for carrying out ecological studies and creating protection areas, this range does not fully encompass the functional biodiversity of such a rich biome. Our results demonstrate the potential for combining regionalization and conservation approaches to unravel the macro-structures of biomes.

Environmental gradients are known to drive changes in mean trait values, but changes in the trait integration strength across local communities are less well understood, particularly with regard to possible links with species richness variation. Here, we tested if climate, soil, and topography gradients drive species richness indirectly via constraints on trait integration in the Atlantic Forest of South America. We evaluated seven traits (from leaf, wood, seed, and plant size) of 1456 species occurring across 84 local communities. Generalized least square models and a path model were applied to test direct and indirect relationships. Correlations were higher between leaf traits (average r = 0.28) and lower when other traits were included (average r = 0.16). In line with this result, species richness was related to a multivariate index of interspecific trait integration (ITI) computed for leaf traits, but not to the ITI for all the seven traits. Abiotic gradients influenced species richness both directly and indirectly through the leaf trait integration. A total of 33% and 26% of the variation in species richness and ITI, respectively, were explained by the models, with climatic conditions showing higher contribution than topographic and edaphic factors. These results support a significant but reduced environmental selection role behind the trait-based community assembly and may suggest that other processes are involved in the constrain of trait integration at larger spatial scales. In addition, different directional trends in trait–trait relationships across local communities suggest that global trait relationships may not necessarily hold at local contexts.

The Amazon forest covers 7.5 million km² in nine countries, hosts 25% of the global biodiversity and is a major contributor to the biogeochemical and climatic functioning of the Earth system. Despite its global importance, a regionalization of the Amazon tree flora is still lacking. Clear and data‐driven delimitation of subregions is important for macroecological studies, to the identification of metacommunities and is a requisite for conservation planning. We aimed at identifying and mapping plant species subregions and investigated their relationships with environmental, historical and human correlates. We provide the first woody plant regionalization of the entire Amazon forest using a data‐driven approach based on assemblage composition patterns. We compiled data on woody species composition from 301 assemblages based on species occurrences. We then used unconstrained ordination, interpolation and clustering techniques to identify and map discrete woody subregions. Hierarchical clustering analysis was conducted in order to investigate the relationships between the identified subregions. We used multinomial logistic regression model and deviance partitioning to investigate the influence of environmental, historical and human factors on subregions distribution. We identified 13 woody subregions in the entire Amazon forest. The hierarchical subregion classification showed a broad Andean‐Cratonic east–west division. Variation in subregions was explained jointly by human factors and spatial structure followed by environmental factors and spatial structure combined. Synthesis. Our woody plant subregions differed from World Wildlife Fund ecoregions and physiognomic‐based maps, highlighting the importance of basing regionalizations on taxon‐specific groups and confirming that vegetation maps should not be used as proxies to plant diversity subregions. Our findings also confirm the need for multiple and extensive protected areas in the Amazon forest. The relevance of current climate factors in our study alerts to a profound impact that climate change could have on the spatial organization of the Amazon flora.

Euterpe precatoria Mart. is the most abundant plant species in the Amazon basin, and one of the main non-timber forest products on the continent. A thorough understanding of the ecology of this species is needed to support sustainable management initiatives. Resource availability, disturbance regime, and human management are some of the main factors influencing population structure. We described the species’ life stages, evaluated its allometric relationships, and assessed the effects of habitat type (floodplain and upland) and proximity to human settlements on population size distribution in the Central Amazon near the Purus River. The height:diameter ratio increased from Seedlings to Juvenile 2, but decreased from Juvenile 2 to Reproductive 2, indicating changing height investment for any given diameter along these life stages. There was a marked habitat dependency in both the density and population size distribution, with populations in upland forests dominated by juveniles, whereas populations in the floodplains were dominated by reproductive palms. Proximity to human settlements was not related to population structure parameters. Our results suggest that the disturbance regime may have opposite meanings in várzea forests, where it limits recruitment under increased light levels, and in terra firme forests, where it may stimulate recruitment under limited light conditions.

One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are ∼73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers. Our aims were to quantify and map the plant ecoregions of the Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot that covers ca 150 million ha in eastern South America. We used a data set on the distribution of 4378 shrub and tree species across 711 localities. Plant ecoregions were identified using analyses of species turnover for both species occurrences and relative abundances. We interpolated NMDS axes of compositional variation over the entire the Atlantic Forest extent, and then classified the compositional dissimilarity according to the number of biogeographical ecoregions previously identified through K‐means analyses. We assessed the ability of environmental, historical vegetation stability and the current human footprint to explain the occurrence of the identified ecoregions through multinomial logistic regression models. We identified 21 spatially cohesive occurrence and 14 abundance ecoregions. Aridity, soil and historical biome stability were retained in the best model explaining both occurrence and abundance ecoregions. Broad compositional zones were identified through UPGMA cluster analysis of ecoregions, and formed north and south compositional blocks. Our work confirms the existence of a broad north–south divide within the Atlantic Forest, previously suggested based on climatic and amphibious data. Differences between the occurrence and abundance maps suggest the location of transition zones to neighbouring domains and endemism centres. Due to the aggregate nature of our analyses, site‐level disturbance degree was not considered, implying that human impacts could be broader then we could detect. There was limited overlap between our results and previous Atlantic Forest regionalization efforts, indicating that multi‐taxa, physiognomic and environmental regionalization schemes based on expert opinion or vegetation maps are poor proxies for compositional ecoregions.

Understanding the effects of disturbance on seed rain is critical to predict changes in forest species composition and diversity. Logging effects on seed rain in a mixed conifer-hardwood forest complex in southern Brazil were evaluated. One year of seed rain data were collected from a large-scale observational experiment in logged and protected forests and quantity and average seed size weighted by species abundance (CWM) were compared between old-growth and logged stands 55 years after logging activities. Using these data, variations in frequency of functional groups of species in the seed rain were examined to see if they could be attributed to logging. Results show that the number of seeds per trap was highly right-skewed, ranging from 13 to 12,788 seeds per trap in one year. Seed rain was affected by logging history, with seed traps in old-growth plots receiving significantly less seeds than traps in logged plots. All species included mean seed size weighted by species abundance were significantly smaller in logged than in old-growth forests. This difference persisted after the exclusion of Araucaria angustifolia, a large-seeded pioneer which was intensively logged, although the difference of seed size between the two forest classes was greatly reduced. Species abundance in the seed rain differed significantly from the established tree community, between logged and old-growth stands. The composition of the seed rain was much more variable than the composition of the established tree community and its points more scattered over the ordination space than the points corresponding to the protected forests. The number of collected seeds across different functional groups of species significantly differed between logged and old-growth plots. The seed rain of logged forests reflects their arrested succession as indicated by reduced abundance of functional groups such as pioneers, large seeded pioneers and Araucaria, as well as reduced functional diversity. Seed rain differences between logged and old- growth stands reflect the intensive logging of A. angustifolia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on intake, digestibility and fractionation of carbohydrates and proteins of cottonseed cake as an alternative protein source in rams diets. The diets were composed of corn silage, soybean meal, ground corn, urea, and cottonseed cake (0, 70, 140 and 210 g/kg dry matter (DM)) in a roughage/concentrate ratio of 50:50. Thirty-two Santa Ines rams, average age 12 months and weight 27.48 &plusmn, 4.96 kg were distributed in a completely randomised design. A reduction of 0.161 g/day in crude protein (CP) intake was observed for each gram of cottonseed cake inclusion. The intake of non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) decreased by 0.511 g/day for each gram of cottonseed cake inclusion. Similarly, the ratio between intake of DM (p = 0.034), CP (p &lt, 0.001), NFC (p = 0.004) and body weight decreased with cottonseed cake inclusion. Inclusion of cottonseed cake caused decreases in the digestibility coefficients of DM (p &lt, 0.001), CP (p &lt, 0.001) and NFC (p = 0.002). A reduction of 0.716 g was observed in carbohydrate fraction A + B1 (p = 0.006). The inclusion of cottonseed cake in the rams feed should be carried out with caution because this by-product promotes linear reduction in intake and digestibility nutrient, in addition to modifying the amounts of digestible and indigestible fractions in the diets.

Significance Identifying and explaining regional differences in tropical forest dynamics, structure, diversity, and composition are critical for anticipating region-specific responses to global environmental change. Floristic classifications are of fundamental importance for these efforts. Here we provide a global tropical forest classification that is explicitly based on community evolutionary similarity, resulting in identification of five major tropical forest regions and their relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. African and American forests are grouped, reflecting their former western Gondwanan connection, while Indo-Pacific forests range from eastern Africa and Madagascar to Australia and the Pacific. The connection between northern-hemisphere Asian and American forests is confirmed, while Dry forests are identified as a single tropical biome., Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world’s tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world’s tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: (i) Indo-Pacific, (ii) Subtropical, (iii) African, (iv) American, and (v) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Additionally, a northern-hemisphere Subtropical forest region was identified with representatives in Asia and America, providing support for a link between Asian and American northern-hemisphere forests.

A core question involving both plant physiology and community ecology is whether traits from different organs are coordinated across species, beyond pairwise trait correlations. The strength of within‐community trait coordination has been hypothesized to increase along gradients of environmental harshness, due to the cost of adopting ecological strategies out of the viable niche space supported by the abiotic conditions. We evaluated the strength of trait relationship and coordination in a stressful environment using 21 leaf and stem traits of 21 deciduous and evergreen woody species from a heath vegetation growing on coastal sandy plain in northeastern South America. The study region faces marked dry season, high soil salinity and acidity, and poor nutritional conditions. Results from multiple factor analyses supported two weak and independent axes of trait coordination, which accounted for 25%–29% of the trait variance using phylogenetically independent contrasts. Trait correlations on the multiple factor analyses main axis fit well with the global plant economic spectrum, with species investing in small leaves and dense stems as opposed to species with softer stems and large leaves. The species’ positions on the main functional axis corresponded to the competitor‐stress‐tolerant side of Grime's CSR triangle of plant strategies. The weak degree of trait coordination displayed by the heath vegetation species contradicted our expectation of high trait coordination in stressful environmental habitats. The distinct biogeographic origins of the species occurring in the study region and the prevalence of a regional environmental filter coupled with local homogeneous conditions could account for prevalence of trait independence we observed.

Our understanding regarding the demography of adult conifers in forest–grassland mosaics is still limited. I studied the landscape-scale demography and spatial distribution of the conifer Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze in a subtropical forest–grassland mosaic over a 24-year period. Araucaria angustifolia is a long-lived pioneer that is expected to thrive in grasslands and forest edges better than in forest patches. I used the position of trees in aerial photographs taken in 1984 to analyze spatial patterns and a 2008 satellite image to estimate individual survivorship. Spatial distribution of trees in the grassland was aggregated and was not related to the distribution of trees in forest patches. Survivorship was higher in forest patches than in grasslands, where it showed density dependence. In forest patches, survivorship was positively related to both patch area and distance from forest edge. Crown breakage was more common in the grassland than in forest patches. In forest patches, it was positively related to crown size, number of conspecific neighbours, and patch area. Adult Araucaria angustifolia seem to benefit from angiosperm-dominated neighbourhoods relative to isolation in grasslands. Density-dependent effects, known to be widespread among seeds and seedlings, were shown to be important to adult trees as well.

Despite its advantages over other energy sources, hydropower facilities are recognized as causes of terrestrial and freshwater environmental impacts. A deeper understanding of hydropower effects on surrounding riparian forests is thus important to the development hydropower facilities of less impact on the environment as well as to define criteria to manage the vegetation in the vicinity of large hydroelectric dams. We compared tree community structure on forest slopes exposed to a hydropower reservoir created in 2005 with control ones, in the biodiversity-rich subtropical forests of southern Brazil. Field data were collected between 2009 and 2011 on six forest slopes of which three were affected by the rise in water level caused by a hydropower dam, while the other three were in nearby sites unaffected by damming. Ninety 10 × 10 plots were set along six 50 m × 10 m transects. Forest structure was significantly affected by vicinity of reservoir, but this effect differed significantly between different tributaries of the Pelotas River. Rarefaction curves showed homogeneity in species richness among the studied hills. Composition differed significantly between reservoir and control areas. Variance partition results showed that pure reservoir effects explained a fraction of the variance in floristic composition comparable to environmental factors. Vicinity to reservoir was the main factor able to distinguish between communities in the studied system in a multiple regression tree. Our results highlight that hydroelectric facility building produces more extensive damage to remnant native forests than anticipated and that even forests upslope from reservoir border may suffer rapid structural and compositional degradation due to changes in environmental conditions caused by altered hydrology.

In spite of recent advances, the relative roles of deterministic and stochastic processes in community assembly remains disputed. We tested community assembly hypotheses in a disturbance gradient in a logged mixed conifer-hardwood forest complex in southern Brazil. If abiotic heterogeneity was strong enough (Selection hypothesis), we expected niche clustering and reduced niche overlap between species and between ecological groups, phylogenetic clustering, significant β-diversity departure from a random expectation after controlling for α-diversity variation, and non-random trait distribution due to abiotic filtering and limiting similarity. Null expectations were predicted under the Neutral hypothesis. Under the Quasi-Neutral hypothesis, we expected niche clustering and reduced niche overlap as in the Selection hypothesis, but random phylogenetic distribution, random β-diversity variation, and random trait distribution due to niche-based specialization but weak habitat matching resulting from dispersal limitation and drift. We used a series of null models to provide an integrative evaluation of community assembly including species abundances, environmental preferences, phylogenetic relatedness, and trait distribution. Results supported the Quasi-Neutral hypothesis due to a combination of reduced niche overlap, niche clustering along soil and disturbance gradients, evidence for abiotic filtering of functional traits but absent phylogenetic structure and random β-diversity variation. Support to the Quasi-Neutral hypothesis provides evidence for niche-based species selection along environmental gradients, coupled with poor matches between species distributions and environmental factors due to stochastic processes. It also highlights the importance of an integrative approach to the evaluation of community patterns indicative of assembly processes. Had only a subset of the approaches used been employed and different conclusions would have been reached: niche overlap and trait distribution analyses would have indicated a stronger role for selection, while phylogenetic and abundance analyses would have indicated stochastic community assembly. Future research should include different disturbance regimes along with environmental variation in order to assess the interplay of the different drivers that shape the community assembly process, as well as the potential of the Quasi-Neutral hypothesis as an explanation for the assembly process of complex and species-rich subtropical forests.

Despite its implications for carbon storage, animal conservation, and plant regeneration, the variation in the structure of heath vegetation in South America is still poorly studied. In this study, we aimed at examining the edaphic and topographic determinants of this variation along 85 plots (5 × 5 m) randomly distributed in a restinga heath vegetation occurring on coastal dune fields in northeastern Brazil. We carried out a PCA analysis to reduce eleven vegetation descriptors into a small number of structural gradients, which were then assessed by a stepwise standard least-squares multiple regression to reveal the effects of the abiotic environment on structure. The three following hypotheses were tested: (1) both soils and topography are important to explain variation in vegetation structure at local scale; (2) herbaceous plants, cactus, and woody plants show differential responses to soil and topographic variations; and (3) soil acidity and salinity are more important determinants of herbaceous cover than woody plant variation. PCA analysis revealed three major structural gradients related to biomass, herbaceous cover, and leaning plants, respectively. These gradients were only related to calcium and nitrogen contents, which partially supports our first hypothesis. Our results also suggest that different groups of plants have different responses to abiotic gradients that are exposed. The effect of the soil acidity and salinity did not appear to present an immediate strong influence on the herbaceous community. It seems that a reduced number of edaphic factors promote the variation in vegetation structure in the restinga heath vegetation.

We evaluated the frequently assumed but rarely tested hypothesis that in tropical and subtropical forests species form discontinuities along gradients in trait variation, which can be detected to classify species into ecologically meaningful and statistically defined groups. We also tested the hypothesis that the dominant conifer Araucaria angustifolia have a contrasting trait syndrome from the pool of angiosperms. Data were collected in subtropical mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern Brazil. Eleven trait variables (relative growth rates, growth rates under favourable conditions, annual mortality rates, seed length, seed dispersal mode, wood density, maximum height, crown depth, stem slenderness, specific leaf area, and leaf blade length) were measured for 66 large tree species. The conifer Araucaria angustifolia differed significantly in most traits and vital rates from the angiosperm distributions. The Simple Structure Index criterion was used to identify the optimum number of non-hierarchical k-means groups. This index was largest for a solution with five groups. Non-hierarchical groups were more strongly related with the resource capture and height gradients than groups formed by hierarchical clustering. We propose the recognition of seven ecological species groups in the studied forests depending on growth rates, leaf size, wood density, height, stem slenderness, dispersal, and crown depth: Conifers, Palms, Pioneers, Large-seeded Pioneers, Wind-dispersed Large trees, Large shade-tolerant trees, and Small Shade-tolerant trees. The classification produced was coherent with the ecological strategies present in the community and represents a subdivision of Westoby’s leaf-height-seed plant strategy scheme.

We present the first quantification of forest community composition and its relationship with environmental factors in South American subtropical Atlantic Forests. In this region, rain, seasonally dry and mixed forests form an ecotonal zone near the parallel of latitude 30°S. To investigate how well current knowledge on climatic effects and biogeographic distribution apply to subtropical ecotones, we tested the following expectations: (i) there is a floristic longitudinal gradient correlated to altitudinal and climatic gradients; (ii) climatic variables are more important than soil factors in shaping floristic composition; and (iii) there are three floristic regions in the southernmost limit of the Atlantic Forest biome that are expected to be distinct in composition, structure and biogeographical origin. We examined floristic composition and its relationship with environmental factors across 52 1-ha permanent study areas in subtropical Brazil, containing in total 269 tree species ≥ 9.5 dbh (diameter at breast height). Climatic data, related to rainfall seasonality and temperature, as well as soil properties, were compiled from published sources or global data banks. Expectations one and two were confirmed, but expectation three was only partially met. Hierarchical cluster analysis divided the southernmost Atlantic Forests into four major groups (Rain, Seasonally Dry, Western Mixed and Eastern Mixed Forests). Overall, the tested environmental variables differed significantly among the four regions. Using indicator species analysis, we distinguished 46 indicator species, which had significant environmental preferences for one floristic region. These species can be used as indicators of environmental conditions or to determine to which floristic region a certain forest belongs. Biogeographic distributions differed between floristic groups, supporting the interpretation that Eastern Mixed Forests are relict forests of a temperate forest of Andean origin that occurred during colder palaeoclimates. Western Mixed Forests represent the main floristic ecotone between Seasonally dry and Eastern Mixed Forests.

We evaluated the effects of afforestation on the composition and structure of southern Brazilian subtropical grasslands directly beneath tree plantations, in pastures, and in permanent protection areas near watercourses. Cover of plants was registered in 120 plots of 1 m2 in grasslands located at two distances from small watercourses in pasture and eucalypt plantation areas within a livestock ranching landscape. Livestock density is reduced in plantation areas. Species composition beneath tree plantations was significantly different from both pasture and nearby permanent protection areas. Permanent protection areas near plantations were also compositionally different from pastures. Eucalypt plantation was the environment type where ruderals were most abundant. Growth form cover distribution in pasture areas showed a consistent pattern, with graminous herbs being the most common growth form followed by prostrate herbs, prostrate subshrubs, and standing subshrubs. In plantation areas, the dominance of the graminoid herb growth form increased markedly, as well as standing herbs. These increases occurred mainly at the expense of prostrate herbs and subshrubs, which were significantly reduced. Plot-level species density was significantly affected by distance from watercourse and, more importantly, was significantly influenced by the interaction between management regime and distance to watercourse. It was reduced in eucalypt plantations relative to permanent protected areas. Current management of eucalypt plantations in southern Brazil produce unsuitable conditions for grassland species to thrive within plantations. Livestock densities

We investigated the relative importance of various natural and human-related environmental factors on the structure of 36 cacti communities occurring on rocky outcrops in southern Brazil grasslands. Outcrops were embedded in either open grasslands grazed by livestock or five year-old eucalypt plantations. Total richness equaled 10 species, nine of which were globose and only one cylindrical, all of small size. Outcrop-scale true diversity was positively related to outcrop area, slope, and rock cover, and negatively related to the distance to the nearest outcrop. The within- (α) and between-plot (β 1 ) components corresponded to 16.1% and 30.1% of total true diversity, while the between-outcrop (β 2 ) and between-management (β 3 ) levels corresponded to 35.2% and 18.6% of total true diversity. Observed diversities were significantly different from expected values, and the largest differences occurred in the β 2 and β 3 components. Altogether, environmental variables and spatial structure explained 41% of the variance in species abundances in the rocky outcrops. Landscape management and the spatial structure had a significant effect on cacti communities structure, explaining 11% and 9% of total variation, respectively. The first axis in an NMDS ordination reflected compositional differences in cacti communities between management regimes, with the grassland rocky outcrops concentrated in the left, and the plantation outcrops scattered to the right. Management-mediated changes in species abundances can be driven by released succession in rocky outcrops embedded in plantations.

If logging and forest multiple-use are to be compatible with biodiversity conservation, then forest structure, composition and diversity must be expected to recover from the disturbance and eventually return to their former levels. Here we evaluate the long-term effects of selective logging and forest multiple-use on Southern Brazilian subtropical Araucaria mixed conifer-hardwood forest resilience at the landscape-scale. Long-term effects of different management regimes were compared between control undisturbed forests and forest stands subjected to early (55 years before this study) and recent (13 years) selective logging followed by undisturbed postharvest periods, and forest fragments subjected to selective logging followed by unregulated multiple-use by private landowners. Forest structure (tree density, basal area and height, and regeneration density) in early-logged areas was indistinguishable from control areas. Fragmentation and chronic disturbance, however, degraded forest fragments and kept them at early successional stages, with higher tree density, reduced basal area and scarce or absent regeneration. Mixed forests showed compositional resilience in the angiosperm component but not in the conifer component. Chronic disturbance kept forest fragments floristically away from mature and undisturbed secondary forests. Species richness in control and recently-logged plots did not differ significantly and was higher than richness in early-logged plots. Species richness was much reduced in degraded forest fragments. Density of the conifer Araucaria angustifolia, characteristic of the mature forest, was reduced in the fragments and in logged stands. We discuss how native forest management practices can be implemented to contribute positively to the conservation of the Araucaria mixed forest biodiversity.

Our aims were to quantify and map the plant sub regions of the the Caatinga, that covers 844,453 km2 and is the largest block of seasonally dry forest in South America. We performed spatial analyses of the largest dataset of woody plant distributions in this region assembled to date (of 2,666 shrub and tree species; 260 localities), compared these distributions with the current phytogeographic regionalizations, and investigated the potential environmental drivers of the floristic patterns in these sub regions. Phytogeographical regions were identified using quantitative analyses of species turnover calculated as Simpson dissimilarity index. We applied an interpolation method to map NMDS axes of compositional variation over the entire extent of the Caatinga, and then classified the compositional dissimilarity according to the number of biogeographical sub regions identified a priori using k-means analysis. We used multinomial logistic regression models to investigate the influence of contemporary climatic productivity, topographic complexity, soil characteristics, climate stability since the last glacial maximum, and the human footprint in explaining the identified sub regions. We identified nine spatially cohesive biogeographical sub regions. Current productivity, as indicated by an aridity index, was the only explanatory variable retained in the best model, explaining nearly half of the floristic variability between sub regions. The highest rates of endemism within the Caatinga were in the Core and Periphery Chapada Diamantina sub regions. Our findings suggest that the topographic complexity, soil variation, and human footprint in the Caatinga act on woody plant distributions at local scales and not as determinants of broad floristic patterns. The lack of effect of climatic stability since the last glacial maximum probably results from the fact that a single measure of climatic stability does not adequately capture the highly dynamic climatic shifts the region suffered during the Pleistocene. There was limited overlap between our results and previous Caatinga classifications.

To evaluate the effects of distinct management of the matrix in which forest fragments are found upon plant populations thriving in forest remnants in south Brazil, we assessed the conservation status of populations of four woody species (Campomanesia rhombea, Diospyros incontans, Myrciaria cuspidata and Sebastiania commersoniana) through analyses of size structure. Analyzes were carried out at two scales. At a local scale, we consider populations in fragments surrounded by pastures or eucalypts forest plantations, and at a regional scale we also consider larger forest tracts taken as reference areas (Rio Grande do Sul Forest Inventory databank). Population size structures were summarized using the symmetry of height distributions. Small individual size classes prevailed at the local scale in fragments surrounded by eucalypts plantations, whereas in areas exposed to cattle ranching, populations of the same species consistently lack small individuals. At the regional scale, populations in fragments surrounded by pastures presented greater skewness (prevalence of small plants) than populations in reference areas, while populations surrounded by eucalypts plantations presented intermediate skewness. These results reinforce the notion that plantations have a higher conservation value for forest ecosystems than other commercial land uses, like cattle ranching.

Temporal variation in seed crop size of the long-lived pioneer conifer Araucaria angustifolia was studied in subtropical South America. We evaluated the expectations that: 1) A. angustifolia presents highly variable seed production (mast seeding behavior); 2) A. angustifolia has endogenous cycles of reproduction of two or three years; 3) There is a tendency for a high seed production year to be followed by an unusually low production year; 4) populations show synchrony in seed production at a geographical scale; 5) seed crop size is influenced by distinct climatic factors occurring during “key” reproductive stages and 6) as an expression of plant productivity, seed crop size should depend on integrated resource availability during the reproductive cycle. We obtained data from two distinct sources: 1) seed harvesting records from a private forest (14 years), and 2) commercial data from 22 municipalities in the Rio Grande do Sul State. Expectations 1, 2, 3 and 5 were not met, while expectations 4 and 6 were supported by the data. A. angustifolia showed environmentally triggered, continuous, moderately fluctuating, and regionally synchronous reproduction. Seed set seems to track variations in resource abundance as well as respond continuously to improved opportunities for successful regeneration.

The regeneration ecology of the long-lived conifer Araucaria angustifolia was studied in Sao Francisco de Paula, southern Brazil. We evaluated the expectations that: (i) size distribution of populations of Araucaria angustifolia, a large conifer that dominates southern Brazil's mixed forests, is left-skewed in old-growth forests but right-skewed in logged forests, indicating chronic recruitment failure in the first kind of habitat as well as a recruitment pulse in the second; (ii) seedlings and juveniles are found under more open-canopy microsites than would be expected by chance; and (iii) reproductive females would be aggregated at the coarse spatial scales in which past massive recruitment events are expected to have occurred, and young plants would be spatially associated with females due to the prevalence of vertebrate and large-bird seed dispersers. Data were collected in the threatened mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern Brazil in ten 1-ha plots and one 0.25-ha plot that was hit by a small tornado in 2003. Five of these plots corresponded to unlogged old-growth forests, three to forests where A. angustifolia was selectively logged ca. 60 years ago and two to forests selectively logged ca. 20 years ago. For the first time, ontogenetic life stages of this important conifer are identified and described. The first and second expectations were fulfilled, and the third was partially fulfilled, since seedlings and juveniles were hardly ever associated with reproductive females. These results confirm the generalization of the current conceptual model of emergent long-lived pioneer regeneration to Araucaria angustifolia and associate its regeneration niche to the occupation of large-scale disturbances with long return times.

In this paper I examined the usefulness of tree population size distributions in evaluating the conservation status of populations of an endangered tree species. I set expectations derived from two complimentary views of the ecology of rainforest trees and examined whether they were met by size distributions of populations of the South American dominant conifer Araucaria angustifolia and its relationship with forest structural characteristics. Specifically, I evaluated the expectations that (i) A. angustifolia trees have larger diameter than average angiosperm trees and form a higher monospecific canopy layer above the shorter angiosperm canopies; (ii) A. angustifolia populations are characterized by size distributions with many large individuals and a long tail of relatively rare, small individuals (have symmetry coefficient

We investigated landscape structure and spatial patterns of natural grasslands and Atlantic Forests in southern Brazil in 1984, 1994, and 2005. The studied region is a highland grassland disjunct region ( campos de cima da serra ) surrounded by forests. We asked: (a) was there an intensification of habitat loss, fragmentation, and isolation of the Atlantic forest or grassland, within the highland ecotonalzone? (b) What was the degree of connectivity/isolation of the patches? (c) Was there any pattern of grassland loss related to moisture/microtopography? (d) Did agroeconomic activities influence landscape patterns and land use change? We analyzed Landsat remotely sensed information to characterize the land use and land cover, also considering subdivision into eight agroeconomic regions. Results showed that the area occupied by agriculture suffered a strong expansion along with exotic tree plantations, at the expense of grasslands, which suffered marked loss and fragmentation. Grassland destruction was biased towards humid areas in valleys between relief undulations. Forests expanded as a network of small patches in close contact with other land uses. Land cover differed significantly among agroeconomic regions, suggesting that conservation measures need to contemplate both forest and grassland ecosystems and socioeconomic distinctions as well. We expected that in clonal plants with the phalanx growth form, prereproductive ramets function as a meristem bank that helps buffer ramet demography against environmental fluctuations. Specifically, we evaluated four expectations for the forest understorey clonal palm Geonoma brevispatha in a swamp forest in south-eastern Brazil. Our expectations were are follows: (i) the vital rates of prereproductive ramets are more responsive to genet-related characteristics (genet size, distance and size of the nearest genet neighbour, and reproductive ramet survivorship) than to environmental variables (canopy openness, basal area of small trees, flooding, and distance and size of the nearest large tree neighbour), whose effects are expected to affect ramet dynamics indirectly through physiological integration; (ii) the progress of prereproductive ramets to later stages is dependent on the death of reproductive ramets; (iii) the population dynamics of G. brevispatha is resistant to significant interannual changes in the vital rates of ramets, (i.e. the occurrence of good and bad years); and (iv) there are large negative covariances among demographic transitions within a given year, as well as between years, reflecting the flexibility of G. brevispatha to adjust to environmental variability. Expectations 1, 2 and 4 were confirmed, while expectation 3 was only partially confirmed. Matrix models predicted that the growth rate of the overall ramet population was significantly greater than unity in the first study year, but it was significantly smaller than 1.0 in the second study year. Ramet population growth rates at the level of individual genets were greater than unity in the majority of genets in the first year, but in the second year genets with growth rates smaller than unity prevailed. Ramet population dynamics seems to be resistant to the succession of good and bad years; in effect, the presence of a meristem bank of ramets helps stabilize l.

Temporal changes and spatial variation of soil drainage and understory light availability in 2001 and 2002, small stem (5 ≤ dbh (diameter at breast height)

The demography of the acaulescent palm Attalea humilis was studied from 1996 to 1999 in three forest fragments (1.6, 6.4, and 9.9 ha) in southeastern Brazil (22°30′–22°33′ S, 42°15′–42°19′ W). A human-induced fire damaged the populations in August–September 1997. Palm density was higher in the medium-sized fragment, where it was concentrated in a single disturbed sector. Population ontogenetic stage structure was dependent on fragment and year, but in general later stages were more abundant than initial ones. Population finite growth rates projected from linear, stage-structured demographic models indicated that the populations were increasing before fire. Population growth rate in the smallest fragment was larger due to a single recruitment event, being most sensitive to changes in survival and growth of seedlings, virgins and the immature, and relatively insensitive to changes in shrinkage and fecundity. Observed growth rates for the entire study period showed that populations remained in equilibrium after fire, but the population in the medium-sized fragment showed a declining tendency. Population structure was resilient to fire, which caused a transitory concentration of individuals in the medium-sized stage. The self-sustainability of the population in the largest, most preserved fragment suggests that habitat-protection measures may suffice to ensure the persistence of populations in small fragments. However, population fluctuations and exclusion from hyper-disturbed sectors in the smallest fragment suggest that reduced fragment area, habitat degradation and human-induced fires can interact to threaten the persistence of even abundant, preadapted to fire, species like A. humilis.

We tested the hypotheses that: (i) reproductive Geonoma brevispatha, an understorey clonal palm endemic to South American swamps, is most abundant in more brightly lit microsites but the abundance of juveniles is not responsive to light availability, (ii) the species is restricted to the transitional zones between flooded and well-drained microsites, (iii) if hypotheses (i) and/or (ii) are accepted, the microhabitat specialization they represent should be reflected in the spatial distribution of the individuals at distinct scales. The study was carried out in a swamp forest in south-eastern Brazil. Soil moisture was autocorrelated at distances up to approximately 1 m, reflecting a fine-scale microtopographic pattern of flooded pits and channels delimited by drier mounds. The first hypothesis was rejected, but the second hypothesis was accepted. No genets occurred on flooded microsites. A juvenile emergence experiment showed that seeds were unable to develop into juveniles under flooded conditions, but canopy openness did not influence the number of juveniles emerging. The third hypothesis was accepted. Individual genets were randomly distributed at scales corresponding to soil moisture patches, but were aggregated at larger scales. Juvenile genets were positively associated with reproducer genets. Our results indicate that palms may specialize on narrow parts of moisture gradients in swamp forests, and that this specialization can exclude them from even subtly distinct microhabitats.

The morphology of Eugenia dysenterica DC. (Myrtaceae) seeds and post-seminal development was studied and its germination response investigated in relation to temperature, desiccation under different drying regimes and storage under three temperatures. The seeds are elliptical, varying from globose to half-globose and seedlings are cryptogeal with long and slender axial roots. High germination percentages were achieved at temperatures ranging from 15° to 30°C and the thermal optimum was about 24°C. Seeds presented high moisture contents on shedding (47-53%) and completely lost viability when moisture contents were reduced to values below 18-22%; a straight-line relationship was observed between the probit of germination and moisture content percentage. These characteristics provide evidence of a recalcitrant storage behaviour of this species. Storage at near 45% moisture content enabled seed survival for 175 days with over 50% viability, in spite the storage temperature.

We investigated the patterns of growth and reproduction of the understory clonal palm Geonoma brevispatha based on the identification of post-germinative ontogenetic stages, over a 3-year period. Genets were monitored in 100 5 × 5 m plots and 100 2 × 2 m subplots, in a 1-ha area of swamp forest in São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. Ramets pass through four ontogenetic stages (bifid-leafed juveniles, pinnatifid-leafed stemless immatures, stemmed nonreproductive virgins, and reproducers). Leaf size, leaf number, and leaf production rate increased during ontogeny, but diameter growth rate was higher among immatures. Stem length, number of nodes, and leaf rachis length were positively correlated across ontogenetic stages, but crown height was smaller than stem length in adult palms because of frequent leaning. Leaf number and sexual fecundity increased with ramet size, but declined in larger, senescent ramets. Clonal fecundity preceded sexual fecundity, and sexual and clonal fecundity increased continuously with genet size. No relationship was found between sexual and clonal fecundity. Growth and survival strategies of G. brevispatha were consistent with the patterns found in other tropical clonal palm species. Sexual fecundity and cloning seem to be two integrated processes favored by environmental conditions that also support the growth of existing ramets.Key words: stage-structured populations, ontogenetic stages, swamp forest, Brazil, Atlantic forest, senescence.

The occurrence of disturbed sectors may be as important as microscaleedge effects in tropical forests fragments. We considered the spatialdistribution dynamics of life stages (youngs, immatures, and adults) of theacaulescent, endemic palm Attalea humilis Mart. ex.Spreng.in fire-prone fragments of the Brazilian Atlantic forest to investigatepopulation responses to fragment size and fire occurrence. From 1996 to 1999,werecorded the number of individuals in different life stages in adjacent10×10-m plots in two perpendicular transects across each of threefragments of different sizes (1.6, 6.4, and 9.9 ha) in the ReservaNacional de Poco das Antas, Southeastern Brazil. A fire burnt thefragments studied in 1997. Application of Morisita's Index showed clumping atmost scales, with a marked reduction in clumping degree from youngs to adults,apattern not influenced by fragment size. After fire, clumping degree increasedtemporarily among the youngs. No association between life stages was detectedusing presence/absence data. Palm density concentrated in the most disturbedtransect arms, a pattern very little affected by fragment size or fire. Noconsistent relationship between palm density and distance from fragment edgewasdetected for any stage, fragment, or year. We hypothesize that short-distanceseed dispersal by scatterhoarding rodents results in discrete, low-densityclumps of youngs dissociated from reproductive plants. The spatial pattern oflater stages is probably conditioned by the distribution of canopy gaps in thelargest, more closed fragment. In the other fragments, the presence of largedisturbed sectors promotes the formation of large, continuous stands of palms.This pattern would be reinforced by fire, which is known to be recurrent onalready disturbed sites. For the species studied, large-scale variations in theforest structure (degraded vs. preserved fragment sectors) seems to be moreimportant than microscale edge effects.
