1. Information Transmission Features of Live Mode Radio Channel When Using Unmanned Dosimetry Complex

Abstract: The accident at the Fukushima NPP has revealed a certain drawback of traditional methods of registration of ionizing radiation by means of the automated radiation monitoring system, because in the conditions of the accident at the NPP the monitoring posts of the system were damaged as a result of the tsunami (23 of 24), which did not allow to evaluate the degree of radioactive contamination of the area in the early stages. In such conditions the most promising method of radiation control carried out on the potentially hazardous area is a non-contact method using an unmanned dosimetry complex (UDC), the application of which would reduce the risk of exposure to additional dose loads of personnel carrying out search and reconnaissance work and, additionally, provide management not only with information regarding radioactive contamination of the environment, but also directly provide the results of the search and reconnaissance. However, apart from the equipment used to determine the radiation background (detectors, spectrometers, radiometers, etc.) an important part of the UDC is the organization of the dosimetry complex and the way of information transfer.A possible variant of data transmission channel from the dosimetry complex installed on the UDC to the operator's personal computer is presented using NRF radio modules as an example.

Abstract: The structure of gamma spectrometry systems for decommissioning nuclear facilities is considered. Physicotechnical characteristics of a xenon gamma spectrometer being a main device for measuring gamma spectra of analyzed objects and determining their activity are presented. The practicability of xenon gamma spectrometers in decommissioning nuclear facilities is shown. The data obtained using the gamma spectrometry system is transmitted over internet to a remote computer to process experimental data in real time.

Abstract: Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D and its mixing parameter with the photon, $$\varepsilon $$ ε . The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$$ - 0.5 + 0.2 GeV, and $$\varepsilon ^2$$ ε 2 ranging between $$10^{-11}$$ 10 - 11 and $$10^{-17}$$ 10 - 17 .

Abstract: The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $10^{11}$ muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a three-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $(3.27\pm0.07)~\times~10^{11}$ protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill. Abstract: The results obtained by measuring the efficiency of detection of charged particles (atmospheric muons) for a prototype of a polyvinyltoluene-based scintillation detector being created for the anticoincidence system of the Signal experiment on board the Interhelioprobe spacecraft are presented. These measurements rely on determining the ratio of the numbers of triple and double coincidences of pulses that arise as atmospheric muons traverse the detector system.

Abstract: International audience; The Interhelioprobe mission aims to investigate the inner heliosphere and the Sun from close distances (up to 0.3 AU) and from out of the ecliptic plane (up to 30°). In this paper we present the relevance of the mission and its main scientific objectives, describe the scientific payload, ballistic scenario and orbits of the spacecraft. Possibilities of scientific cooperation with other solar and heliospheric space missions are also mentioned.

Abstract: The description of gamma-spectrometric apparatus “Nuclide” intended for the detection and identification of elements of radioactive space debris is presented. This device is planned to be installed on the “Universat-SOCRAT” spacecraft. The results of estimations of the sensitivity of this equipment depending on the distance to the objects under study are presented.

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 $\mathrm{\small GeV/c}$ proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived superweakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) $\mathrm{\small GeV/c^2}$ in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. This paper describes the proposal for the experimental facility together with the most important feasibility studies. Abstract: Measurement results of charged particles (atmospheric muon) detection efficiency of a scintillation detector based on polyvinyltoluene, manufactured for the anticoincidence system of the "Signal" device as part of the scientific apparatus for the spacecraft "Interhelioprobe", are presented. The efficiency measurement technique is based on determination of the ratio of triple and double coincidence of the signals arising as atmospheric mu-mesons pass through the system of detectors. The results of light collection simulation in scintillation detectors by the use of Monte Carlo method are presented.

Abstract: A xenon gamma spectrometer (XGS) with a sensitive volume of 6 liters is described. Physico-technical characteristics of the gamma spectrometer, determined using radioactive sources of the set of standard spectrometric gamma sources, are presented. Gamma spectra of radioactive waste in a 3.4-m3 container for solid radioactive waste are measured, and isotope activities are determined. The XGS is simulated by the Monte Carlo method using the GEANT4 package. The activities are determined by a combined method with an analysis of experimental spectra and simulated data. It is shown that the XGS has good metrological capabilities for characterizing radioactive waste, including nuclide identification and their activity estimation.

Abstract: Protection of scientific equipment aboard spacecrafts against both natural and artificial constant magnetic fields is an urgent problem. Multilayer film electromagnetic shields produced by electrodeposition showed high shielding efficiency during laboratory tests. To test their application prospects under conditions of real space flights, a “Nanomag” scintillation telescope was developed and fabricated. Laboratory tests which demonstrated its operability at magnetic field induction to 4 mT are presented in this paper.

Abstract: Electrodeposited multilayer-film electromagnetic shields are very promising for protecting various devices due to high shielding efficiency and the possibility of depositing on complex-shaped objects. In this communication, we present the results of measurements of the shielding efficiency of such shields. The shields represent alternating layers of materials with high magnetic permeability (Ni-Fe) and high conductivity (Cu). The maximum number of double layers is 45. It is shown that the shielding efficiency in the weak magnetic fields (0.1–0.2 mT) is 8–10; at higher magnetic field strengths (1.5–2.5 mT), it reaches 80–100. It is shown that the shielding factor increases with the number of layers in the shield at the same thickness of a soft magnetic material. A permalloy shield at the same amount of a soft magnetic material has an efficiency lower by a factor of 3–15 depending on the magnetic field strength.

Abstract: An approach for creation the response functions‘matrix for the xenon gamma-ray detector is discussed. A set of gamma-ray spectra was obtained by Geant4 simulation to generate the matrix. Iterative algorithms used allow to deconvolve and restore initial gamma-ray spectra. Processed spectrum contains peaks that help to identify and estimate a activity of a radioactive source. Results and analysis of experimental spectra deconvolution are shown.

Abstract: The results of the calculation of the detection efficiency of gamma-rays for the xenon gamma spectrometer (XGS) obtained using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation are presented. The gamma spectra of the set of basic standard gamma-sources (OSGI) are analyzed for a real detector, and the calculated and actual detection efficiencies are compared. The XGS spectra are analyzed to determine the minimum concentration of the 152Eu radio nuclide in the 137Cs and 60Co mixture. It is shown that the xenon gamma spectrometer is capable of detecting the isotope at concentrations above 40% in the mixture.

Abstract: Xenon gamma-ray spectrometer for monitoring of 222Rn concentration by means of measurement of its daughter nuclei gamma-ray emission intensity and the main characteristics of this device are presented. Time variations of radon concentration can be interpreted as possible precursors of the Earth’s seismic activity, such as an earthquake, several days prior to these events. The results of the first experiments that were carried out in the Caucasus region of Russia show the possibility of using the described xenon gamma-ray spectrometer for this task.

Abstract: A gamma-ray spectrometer for radioactive waste sorting is presented. The equipment is based on a new “thin-walled” xenon gamma-ray detector with sensitive volume of 4 liters and a digital electronics unit. Use of the thin wall (0.5 mm of stainless steel covered with fiberglass) provides lower absorption of gamma-rays by the detector’s walls and expansion of the energy range of radiation being registered. The digital electronics unit makes it possible to use the equipment in unfavorable field conditions such as high levels of acoustic influence.

Abstract: In the experiment SIGNAL, which is planned to take place on board spacecraft INTERHELIOPROBE, a xenon gammaray spectrometer is to be used. The gamma-ray spectrometer in question has been chosen because of its characteristics permitting detailed study of solar gamma-radiation under rough experimental conditions. The equipment is able to provide: high energy resolution (5-6-fold better than that of scintillation detectors), performance at high temperatures, steady operation under significant vibroacoustic load, and high radiation resistance of the working medium. The aforesaid properties of the xenon gamma-ray spectrometer meet goals and objectives of the experiment SIGNAL. The description of ballistics scenario and operation orbit of the INTERHELIOPROBE spacecraft (SC) are presented.

Abstract: Hi-Cal (High-Altitude Calibration) is a balloon-borne experiment that will be launched in December, 2016 in Antarctica following ANITA-IV (Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna) and will generate a broad-band pulse over the frequency range expected from radiation induced by a cosmic ray shower. Here, we describe a device based on an array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for determination of the azimuthal position of Hi-Cal. The angular resolution of the device is about 3 degrees. Since at the float altitude of ~38 km the pressure will be ~0.5 mbar and temperature ~ − 20 °C, the equipment has been tested in a chamber over a range of corresponding pressures (0.5 ÷ 1000) mbar and temperatures (−40 ÷ +50) °C.

Abstract: A description of the xenon detector (XD) for gamma-ray line emission registration is presented. The detector provides high energy resolution and is able to operate under extreme environmental conditions (wide temperature range and unfavorable acoustic action). Resistance to acoustic noise as well as improvement in energy resolution has been achieved by means of real-time digital pulse processing. Another important XD feature is the ionization chamber’s thin wall with composite housing, which significantly decreases the mass of the device and expands its energy range, especially at low energies.

Abstract: Xenon detector based gamma-ray spectrometer for a radioactive waste sorting complex and its characteristics are described. It has been shown that the "thin-wall" modification of the detector allows better registration of low-energy gamma rays (tens of keV). The spectrometer is capable of operation in unfavorable field conditions and can identify radionuclides of interest in less than 1 second.

Abstract: In different materials for magnetic shields, the maximum permeability is achieved for different values of the magnetic field. This determines the choice of material. So for protection from magnetic fields strength of 10 - 150 A/m it is advisable to apply the amorphous ribbon 84KXCP. For stronger fields (more than 400 A/m) it is recommended to use MFS based on Ni20Fe80. Use of these materials allows creating an effective shield working in a wide range of magnetic field strengths.

Abstract: Experimental results of thermal neutrons detection by high pressure xenon gamma- ray spectrometers are presented. The study was performed with two devices with sensitive volumes of 0.2 and 2 litters filled with compressed mixture of xenon and hydrogen without neutron-capture additives. Spectra from Pu-Be neutron source were acquired using both detectors. Count rates of the most intensive prompt neutron-capture gamma-ray lines of xenon isotopes were calculated in order to estimate thermal neutrons efficiency registration for each spectrometer.

Abstract: Results of developing of a gamma-ray detector based on LaBr3(Ce) scintillation crystal for neutron capture therapy are presented. An energy resolution of the detector measured by photomultiplier tube Hamamatsu R6233-100 is showed. It was 2.93% for gamma line 662 keV from a source 137Cs. For radiative capture gamma line of isotope 10B (478 keV) and annihilation line (511 keV) the values were 3.33 and 3.24% respectively. Data analysis of gamma spectra for an estimation of energy resolution threshold required for visual identification gamma lines 478 and 511 keV was made.

Abstract: Performance of a new modification of xenon gamma-ray detec- tor (XGD) is presented. This detector differs from the previous ones by virtue of improved energy resolution ð1.7 � 0.1Þ% at 662 keV and the ability to function in the presence of external acoustic noise (up to 100 dB) with virtually no degradation of spectrometric characteristics. These results have been achieved by developing a digital method of processing every electric signal coming from the XGD. Abstract: The results of xenon detector SIGNAL optimization for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detection in satellite experiment “INTERHELIOPROBE” are presented. We have analyzed GRBs temporal profiles and spectral parameters according to Fermi/GBM data and have modeled the xenon detector response, peak count rate and minimum temporal variation intervals for typical events of long, short and intermediate GRBs types. Abstract: Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between $\mathcal{O}(50\text{ m})$ and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL's benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP's sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. Abstract: Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with $\alpha_D=0.1$ and $m_{A'}=3m_{\chi}$, we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to $2\cdot 10^{20}$ protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. v2: extended version as published on JHEP

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. Abstract: This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400~GeV$/c$ SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400~GeV$/c$ proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$. To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented.
