Los Laboratorios de Producción de Postlarvas requieren de un aumento del porcentaje de cópulas en reproductores obtenidos en ciclo cerrado, para poder satisfacer la demanda de postlarvas de las granjas camaroneras. En este trabajo se evalúa el desempeño reproductivo de los progenitores, bajo la influencia del manejo empleado en sistemas de tanques unisexos y mixtos en condiciones de laboratorios de producción comercial. Los resultados indicaron que el desempeño reproductivo en términos de hembras maduras, porcentaje de cópulas exitosas, número de huevos y nauplios por desove así como porcentaje de eclosión, no difirió entre los sistemas de tanques de maduración empleados. El porcentaje de hembras maduras (IV) del número total en cada tratamiento, se aproximó al 50%, de las cuales el 30% (unisexo) y el 27 % (mixto) fueron copuladas. El porcentaje de supervivencia, fue de 90.7 ± 0.10 y 91.6 ± 0.07 para hembras y de 95.4 ± 0.04 y 96.2 ± 0.05 para machos, sin diferencias entre los dos sistemas de tanques evaluados. Virtual reality (VR) therapies are presently utilized to treat physical and cognitive impairments among elderly people. This systematic review aims to collect the most recent evidence on the effectiveness of VR in improving balance and gait among healthy elderly individuals, in comparison with other therapies. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed, SCOPUS, PEDro, and WoS databases, by selecting randomized clinical trials that evaluated balance, both static and dynamic, as well as gait in a population of healthy older adults who underwent virtual reality therapy. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the PEDro scale. After eligibility criteria were applied and duplicates were removed, 20 studies were selected out of 1705 initially identified. The present systematic review concludes that virtual reality therapy is more effective than minimal intervention or usual care in enhancing static balance, dynamic balance, and gait in healthy elderly individuals. Moreover, virtual reality therapy yields better outcomes compared to traditional balance training and physical exercise in improving balance and gait in this demographic. However, both methods have shown effectiveness.

Objective: The main objective of this study was to establish a relationship between the number of falls and sleep problems experienced by patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 114 Spanish aged people with Alzheimer’s disease institutionalized in nursing homes and 80 independent Spanish aged people without neurodegenerative diseases living at home were enrolled in this study and completed in-person interviews and digital questionnaires. Results: The mean age was 78.98 ± 8.59 years. Sleep disorders were related to continuous stress (p = 0.001; OR = 4.729) and a high frequency of falls (p = 0.001; OR = 2.145), while predictor variables associated with falls in patients with Alzheimer’s disease were continuous medical visits (β = 0.319, p < 0.001), family history of dementia (β = 0.212; p = 0.014), and sleep disorders (β = 0.235; p = 0.007). Second, the analysis showed that moderate physical activity (p = 0.001; OR = 0.147), continuous medical visits (p < 0.001; OR = 0.621), and high level of study (p = 0.011; OR = 0.334) were protective factors against Alzheimer’s, while older age (p = 0.035; OR = 1.087), type II Diabetes Mellitus (p = 0.042; OR = 3.973), number of falls (p = 0.021; OR = 1.409), and daily drug intake (p = 0.001; OR = 1.437) were risk factors for Alzheimer’s. Conclusions: Sleep disturbances are related to stress and falls in a sample of 114 Spanish AD aged people institutionalized in nursing homes, and the falls they experience are related to ongoing medical visits, a history of dementia, and sleep disturbances. Therefore, a bidirectional relationship was established between falls and sleep disorders in these patients. Moreover, this study showed that a greater frequency of falls and high daily drug intake could constitute novel risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, in addition to already known factors, such as age and type II Diabetes Mellitus, while being physically active and a high level of studies are protective factors against Alzheimer’s disease.

A long-term context is important for understanding past climatic variability. Although tree-ring widths (TRWs) are widely used as a proxy for reconstructing past climate, the use of annually-resolved values of δ13C and δ18O tree-ring stable isotopes (TRSIs) is increasing and may provide further valuable information. Here, we present a 487-year-long TRW chronology and 240-year-long TRSI chronology for Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii H. Christ) and compare them to each other. We demonstrate that both δ13C and δ18O values are better proxies for temperature, precipitation, and drought than TRW. The correlations between these climate parameters and TRSIs are strongest for the combined summer (JJA) period. The results of temporal and spatial field correlation indicate that TRSI chronologies are stable, reliable proxies for JJA precipitation reconstruction over the whole Balkan Peninsula and surrounding eastern Mediterranean region. However, the stability of the temperature signal of the both δ13C and δ18O chronologies declines after the 1950s. Our work supports the emerging evidence that TRSI data track climate variability more accurately than a conventional TRW approach and can be subsequently used for the reconstruction of past climate.

A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that we have entered the Anthropocene Epoch. Many assert that society has exceeded sustainable ecological planetary boundaries and that altered biogeophysical processes are no longer reversible to natural rates of ecosystem functioning. To properly and successfully address societal needs for the future, more holistic and complex methods need to be applied at various spatial and temporal scales. The increasingly interconnected nature of human and natural environments—from individuals to large megacities and entire continents and from cells through ecosystems to the biosphere as a whole (e.g., as seen in the carbon cycle)—demand new and often interdisciplinary and international approaches to address emerging global challenges. With that perspective in mind, the Czech Republic’s National Climate Program was established in 1991 with the aim to understand the impact of global environmental change on society. The National Climate Program was updated in 2017 to formulate a new Climate Protection Policy. Here, we outline the multifaceted problems that climate change poses for the Czech Republic, as well as a new scientific infrastructure and approaches directed to better understanding the effects of climate change on our ecosystems, water resources, urban environment, agriculture, human health, and general economy.

Bud phenology and development of needle nitrogen content were monitored on Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica [L.]) trees grown inside glass-domes for five years under ambient (385 µmol(CO2) mol−1) and elevated (700 µmol(CO2) mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]). The spruce to beech ratio was 35:65 in both treatments. At the beginning of the experiment mean age of investigated trees was 5 years.Elevated [CO2] was responsible for premature growth of both spruce and beech buds in the E treatment (not significantly, by 3–7 days). Nevertheless the flushing of neither beech nor spruce was not significantly hastened in E treatment during the flushing within the 5 years. During the second half of flushing faster development of terminal beech buds comparing to spruce was found (Chi-square = 65, p 2] acts as growth stimulator but the nitrogen insufficiency eliminates a positive effect of [CO2]. As the global climate change express itself in many ways and relationship’s consequences among plants and/or animals are hard to forecast.

Retrieving information on the plant physiological status from spectral reflectance is a challenging task in many ways. The easiest way to get the information is through normalized vegetation indices, that are based on a normalization of reflectance in specific wavebands. Beside the most common spectral indices such as Photochemical Reflectance Index PRI or Normalized Difference Vegetation Index NDVI, several new indices has been proposed during the past decade as potential physiological indicators. In this paper, the performance of several of them for determining the physiological status of the foliage is evaluated on an experimental Norway spruce needles (Picea abies (L.) Karst) plot. Four needle classess of 27 years old spruce have been sampled throughout cloudy and sunny day. Needle classes were represented by the needles of the branchlets of the 4th, 7th, 9th and 12th whorls. Study was conducted on one-year old needles and sampling ran over several times a day to separate influence of dynamic processess on parameters. Results show that the ratio of reflectance in the green and red region (presented as ratio of reflectance at 560 nm and 694 nm) outperforms the others examinated vegetation indices, and suggest that it would be best suited for the characterization of the leaf status. Being always the highest in the uppermost part of the crown and the lowest in shaded part of the crown, parameter is strictly stratificated throughout the crown. Furthermore, parameter values correspond with intensity of physiological processess ongoing in needles during midday. The values of the other indicators seem to be affected by leaf pigment content and morphology too much. Neither PRI nor NDVI were able to distinguish differences in needle properties sufficiently.

Hyperspectral reflectance is becoming more frequently used for measuring the functions and productivity of ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the potential of the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) for evaluating physiological status of plants. This is needed because the reasons for variation in PRI and its relationships to physiological traits remain poorly understood. We examined the relationships between PRI and photosynthetic parameters in evergreen Norway spruce and deciduous European beech grown in controlled conditions during several consecutive periods of 10–12 days between which the irradiance and air temperature were changed stepwise. These regime changes induced significant changes in foliar biochemistry and physiology. The responses of PRI corresponded particularly to alterations in the actual quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (ΦPSII). Acclimation responses of both species led to loss of PRI sensitivity to light use efficiency (LUE). The procedure of measuring PRI at multiple irradiance-temperature conditions has been designed also for testing accuracy of ΔPRI in estimating LUE. A correction mechanism of subtracting daily measured PRI from early morning PRI has been performed to account for differences in photosynthetic pigments between irradiance-temperature regimes. Introducing ΔPRI, which provided a better estimate of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) compared to PRI, also improved the accuracy of LUE estimation. Furthermore, ΔPRI was able to detect the effect of drought, which is poorly observable from PRI.

We explored ability of reflectance vegetation indexes (VIs) related to chlorophyll fluorescence emission (𝑅686/𝑅630, 𝑅740/𝑅800) and de-epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle pigments (PRI, calculated as (𝑅531−𝑅570)/(𝑅531−𝑅570)) to track changes in the CO2 assimilation rate and Light Use Efficiency (LUE) in montane grassland and Norway spruce forest ecosystems, both at leaf and also canopy level. VIs were measured at two research plots using a ground-based high spatial/spectral resolution imaging spectroscopy technique. No significant relationship between VIs and leaf light-saturated CO2 assimilation (𝐴MAX) was detected in instantaneous measurements of grassland under steady-state irradiance conditions. Once the temporal dimension and daily irradiance variation were included into the experimental setup, statistically significant changes in VIs related to tested physiological parameters were revealed. ΔPRI and Δ(𝑅686/𝑅630) of grassland plant leaves under dark-to-full sunlight transition in the scale of minutes were significantly related to 𝐴MAX (𝑅2=0.51). In the daily course, the variation of VIs measured in one-hour intervals correlated well with the variation of Gross Primary Production (GPP), Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), and LUE estimated via the eddy-covariance flux tower. Statistical results were weaker in the case of the grassland ecosystem, with the strongest statistical relation of the index 𝑅686/𝑅630 with NEE and GPP.

Abstract The majority (85%) of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (nsCL/P) cases occur sporadically, suggesting a role for de novo mutations (DNMs) in the etiology of nsCL/P. To identify high impact protein-altering DNMs that contribute to the risk of nsCL/P, we conducted whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analyses in 130 African case-parent trios (affected probands and unaffected parents). We identified 162 high confidence protein-altering DNMs some of which are based on available evidence, contribute to the risk of nsCL/P. These include novel protein-truncating DNMs in the ACTL6A, ARHGAP10, MINK1, TMEM5 and TTN genes; as well as missense variants in ACAN, DHRS3, DLX6, EPHB2, FKBP10, KMT2D, RECQL4, SEMA3C, SEMA4D, SHH, TP63, and TULP4. Many of these protein-altering DNMs were predicted to be pathogenic. Analysis using mouse transcriptomics data showed that some of these genes are expressed during the development of primary and secondary palate. Gene-set enrichment analysis of the protein-altering DNMs identified palatal development and neural crest migration among the few processes that were significantly enriched. These processes are directly involved in the etiopathogenesis of clefting. The analysis of the coding sequence in the WGS data provides more evidence of the opportunity for novel findings in the African genome.

A set of electron time-of-flight spectrometers for high-resolution angle-resolved spectroscopy was developed for the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument at the SASE3 soft X-ray branch of the European XFEL. The resolving power of this spectrometer design is demonstrated to exceed 10 000 (E/ΔE), using the well known Ne 1s−13p resonant Auger spectrum measured at a photon energy of 867.11 eV at a third-generation synchrotron radiation source. At the European XFEL, a width of ∼0.5 eV full width at half-maximum for a kinetic energy of 800 eV was demonstrated. It is expected that this linewidth can be reached over a broad range of kinetic energies. An array of these spectrometers, with different angular orientations, is tailored for the Atomic-like Quantum Systems endstation for high-resolution angle-resolved spectroscopy of gaseous samples.

ObjectivesNowadays, there is a significant increase in the elderly population in many countries around the world, and sarcopenia is one of the most common consequences of this with resistance training being one of the best treatments. Hence, this systematic review was conducted to determine what are the effects of different combinations of resistance training-based interventions on the musculoskeletal health of older male adults with sarcopeniaMethodsThis systematic review was performed following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was performed between February and August 2022 in three electronic databases: Pubmed (MEDLINE), Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus employing different keywords combined with Boolean operators. Only 13 articles were included out of the initial 1,019.ResultsThe articles studied the effects of resistance training combined with other interventions, 6 articles combined it with protein and vitamin supplementation, 4 with protein supplements only, while 3 combined it with aerobic training, finding beneficial results mainly on strength, functionality, and body composition.ConclusionResistance Training combined with Aerobic Training or nutritional supplements has better effects than Resistance Training alone in older male adults with sarcopenia.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/#recordDetails, identifier: CRD42022354184.

Summary: Background: Inflammatory and immune responses are essential and dynamic biological processes that protect the body against acute and chronic adverse stimuli. While conventional protein markers have been used to evaluate systemic inflammatory response, the immunological response to stimulation is complex and involves modulation of a large set of genes and interacting signalling pathways of innate and adaptive immune systems. There is a need for a non-invasive tool that can comprehensively evaluate and monitor molecular dysregulations associated with inflammatory and immune responses in circulation and in inaccessible solid organs. Methods: Here we utilized cell-free messenger RNA (cf-mRNA) RNA-Seq whole transcriptome profiling and computational biology to temporally assess lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced and JAK inhibitor modulated inflammatory and immune responses in mouse plasma samples. Findings: Cf-mRNA profiling displayed a pattern of systemic immune responses elicited by LPS and dysregulation of associated pathways. Moreover, attenuation of several inflammatory pathways, including STAT and interferon pathways, were observed following the treatment of JAK inhibitor. We further identified the dysregulation of liver-specific transcripts in cf-mRNA which reflected changes in the gene-expression pattern in this generally inaccessible biological compartment. Interpretation: Using a preclinical mouse model, we demonstrated the potential of plasma cf-mRNA profiling for systemic and organ-specific characterization of drug-induced molecular alterations that are associated with inflammatory and immune responses. The quadriceps femoris muscle (QF) is of clinical importance since it has been correlated with pathologies at knee level, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, pain processes and complex clinical conditions. Among the variables that have been related to these clinical conditions are anthropometric measurements, architecture and muscular behavior of the QF. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the rectus femoris (RF) and vastus intermedius (VIM) muscles’ behavior measured by rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) M-mode under maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and anthropometric measurements. This was a cross-sectional, observational study. Sixty-two asymptomatic volunteers were included (20.42 ± 4.97 years, most women 59.7%). RUSI measurements were muscle contraction/rest thickness and contraction/relaxation velocity. Anthropometric measurements were, lower limb length, RF length, QF tendon length, distance between spines, proximal, middle and distal thigh perimeter. Statistically significant correlations (p < 0.05) were found between VIM thickness at rest and contraction with thigh perimetry, RF length and dominant lower limb length. For the RF, a correlation was found between the thickness at rest and the length of this muscle (p = 0.003). There is a correlation between anthropometric variables and muscular behavior measured by RUSI M-mode.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the anatomic influence of the ribs related to the severity of thoracic spine burst fractures. Methods: A retrospective review of 28 patients with thoracic spine burst fractures hospitalized by the Spine Group of the Hospital Ortopédico de Passo Fundo between January 2002 and December 2016 was conducted. The kyphosis, vertebral collapse, and narrowing of the vertebral canal measurements were compared between patients who had fractures at the true and false rib levels (T1 to T10) and those with fractures at the floating rib levels (T11 to T12). Results: The kyphosis, vertebral collapse, and narrowing of the vertebral canal values, measured only for vertebrae pertaining to the rib cage, were low. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences between the measurements of the group of patients with fractures at the level of the true and false ribs (T1 to T10) and the group of patients whose fractures were at the level of the floating ribs (T11 and T12). Conclusion: The differences between the traumatic structural changes in the vertebrae with true and false ribs (T1 to T10) and the vertebrae with floating ribs (T11 and T12) were not significant in the present study. Abstract Background The Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire is widely used to determine the degree of migraine-related disability of subjects. So far, and to the best of our knowledge, no Spanish version of this tool has been validated. The questionnaire comprises seven items, with the first five constituting the main scale while the sixth and seventh items referring, respectively, to the frequency and intensity of headache. The present study aims to analyze the clinimetric properties of the Spanish version of the MIDAS questionnaire in a population of university students. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study of validation for this measuring instrument. A total of 153 subjects participated in the study. We analyzed construct validity using factor analysis, test-retest reliability by the Intraclass Correlation Coeficient (ICC), internal consistency, and concurrent validity with respect to the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results Factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure. The questionnaire has good reliability for the MIDAS main-scale score ([ICC = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.63–0.90]), excellent reliability for headache frequency (ICC = 0.90; 95%; CI: [0.79–0.95]), and moderately good reliability for headache intensity (ICC = 0.63; 95% CI: [0.34–0.80]). Low back pain represents the leading cause of disability since 1990. In 90% of cases, it is classified as non-specific low back pain, being chronic in 10% of subjects. Ultrasound has proven to be an effective measurement tool to observe changes in the activity and morphology of the abdominal muscles. This article reviews which core synergies are studied with ultrasound in healthy subjects and with chronic non-specific low back pain. A systematic review was conducted on studies analyzing synergies between two or more core muscles. Publications from 2005 until July 2021 were identified by performing structured searched in Pubmed/MEDLINE, PEDro and WOS. Fifteen studies were eligible for the final systematic review. A total of 56% of the studies established synergies between the core muscles and 44% between the homo and contralateral sides of the core muscles. The most studied core synergies were transversus abdominis, internal oblique and external oblique followed by the rectus abdominis and the lumbar multifidus. No studies establishing synergies with diaphragm and pelvic floor were found. Eight studies were conducted in healthy subjects, five studies in subjects with chronic non-specific low back pain compared to healthy subjects and two studies in subjects with chronic non-specific low back pain.

Abstract Objective Data was collected to evaluate the survival rates of head and neck (conjunctiva, oropharyngeal and non-oropharyngeal) squamous cell carcinomas in Ghana. Data description We provided data on a retrospective review of 8 years (January 2004 to December 2009) survival rate of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Ghana. The data consist of patient demographic data and clinicopathological findings which includes tumour site, tumour stage and histological grades of the patients. Clinical outcome measurement was death through to January 2013 on record and confirmed from the hospitals birth and death registry department. More than 85% of death cases were confirmed by gender, age, and folder identification numbers from the birth and death registry.

Introduction: The numerous clinical and radiologic scoring systems available are a testament to the challenges of diagnosing acute appendicitis. As the name implies, the simple acute appendicitis clinical diagnostic triad is simple and userfriendly. Its reproducibility remains to be demonstrated. Aim: To validate the simple clinical diagnostic triad of right lower quadrant abdominal tenderness, anorexia and migratory abdominal pain for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in a District General Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of consecutive appendicectomies undertaken over a 4-month period, for patients who were 18 years and older. Acute appendicitis was proven histologically. The patients’ preoperative symptoms, signs and biochemical parameters were analysed. Sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value (PPV) and Negative Predictive Value (NPV) were calculated. Outcomes were compared using Fisher’s exact test. Results: A total of 92 appendicectomies were undertaken during the study period. The histological diagnoses included acute appendicitis (75), normal appendix (14), carcinoid (1), lymphoid hyperplasia (1) and spirochete (1). Of the 75 patients with acute appendicitis, right lower quadrant tenderness was present in 73, anorexia in 66 and migratory pain in 57 patients. The simple clinical triad (all three parameters) showed a sensitivity of 69.3%, 64.7% specificity, 89.7% PPV and 32.4% NPV. Conclusion: The triad of right lower quadrant tenderness, anorexia and migratory abdominal pain shows consistently high PPV in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

Introduction: In the UK, approximately 70,000 appendicectomies (one of the most common surgical procedures) are performed yearly. There is a wide variation in length of stay following Laparoscopic Appendicectomy (LA). Aim: To review the feasibility of safe same day discharge following LA for patients with acute appendicitis. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of 92 consecutive adults (≥18 years) who underwent emergency appendicectomy in a District General Hospital (DGH), between April and July 2018. The patients were divided into two groups. Group A comprised all patients not discharged on day of operation while Group B comprised all patients discharged on same day of operation. Data collected and analysed included demographics, clinical diagnosis, WBC, CRP, operative details, complications and length of stay. Outcomes were compared using Fisher’s exact test. Results: Group A: Total 86 (93%), included male: female of 38:48, age 36 years (median), range (18-81) years, heart rate 78(median), range (51-162)/minute, temperature 36.8°C (median), range (35.7-40.2)°C, WBC 13.5 (median), range (3.8-25.6), CRP 36 (median), range (2-498) and PO stay 1 (median), range (1-11) days. Group B: Total 6(7%), included male:female of 2: 4 with age of 27 years (median), range (18-49) years, temperature 36.8°C (median), range (36.5-39.2) °C, WBC 10.5 (median), range (7-15.6), CRP 5.5 (median), range (1-94) and PO stay of 0 day. Four had uncomplicated appendicitis, 1 had pus and 1 had appendicular mass with pus. Five out of six patients had LA and were operated before noon. Group B had no complications including no re-admissions. Conclusion: Selective approach to same day discharge, for medically fit patients undergoing emergency laparoscopic appendicectomy, is safe. Complicated appendicitis is not an absolute contraindication to same day discharge.

Detection of grassland canopy chlorophyll fluorescence (Chl-F) conducted with an imaging spectroradiometer provided evidence of potential remote sensing estimation of steady-state Chl-F(Chl-Fs). Daily near-nadir views of extremely high spatial resolution hyperspectral images were acquired from a distance of 4m for temperate montane grassland in the Czech Republic. Simultaneously, measurements of Chl-Fand total chlorophyll content (Chla+b) were made on a single leaf at ground level were collected. A specifically designed ‘shade removal' experiment revealed the influence of dynamic physiological plant processes on hyperspectral reflectance of three wavelengths: 532, 686 and 740nm. Based on this information, the vegetation indexes R686/R630, R740/R800and PRI calculated as (R532–R570)/(R532+R570) were tested for statistical significance with directly measured Chl-Fparameters (maximum fluorescence yield, Fv/Fm; steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence, Chl-Fsand actual quantum yield, ФII). The grassland species under investigation were: Festuca rubra agg. (L.), Hieraciumsp., Plantagosp., Nardus stricta(L.) and Jacea pseudophrygia(C.A. Meyer). The coefficients of determination (R2) for best-fit relationships between PRI-ФIIand PRI-Chl-Fs, measured in the daily course, show a high variability of 0.23–0.78 and 0.20–0.65, respectively. This paper reflects on the revitalization of the ethical and humanistic education in the teaching-learning training general practitioner associated with the educational strategy training project medical ethical humanist on theoretical basis of the development of the doctoral research that addresses the same subject in which the authors are part of their coordination and membership. It is oriented objective: to reveal the ethical and humanistic relationship in the initial training medical professional, relationship with the teleological aspect guiding the culture of ethical and humanistic education and teaching as interdisciplinary integrative demands required by the Cuban medical partner model. The methods are specified in the theoretical systematization, modeling and systematic practice through a systematic project, all from a systemic integrated position supported by the general method dialectical materialism and guided by the principles of bioethics as a teaching tool that is modeled for teachers and students.

Introduction: Both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are part of the National List of Compulsory Notification of Diseases. Despite the compulsory reporting of HIV infection from 2014, there has been a drop in the detection of new cases in the last five years. Objective: Analyze the epidemiological data of HIV/AIDS case reports in the city of Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, from 2007 to 2017 in relation to gender, neighborhoods, notifying units and treatment units. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study, accomplished at the Health Surveillance Sector from the compulsory notifications available in the Information System of Notifiable Diseases (Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação – SINAN). A spreadsheet was made in the Microsoft Excel® Program (2016). Data were analyzed using the SPSS® Program, descriptively through measures of prevalence, incidence and distribution. Results: There were 1,068 notifications. There was a predominance of males (55.5%) and in the age group from 27 to 43 years. Of the 31 notifying health units, three concentrated 95% of the cases: Specialized Care Service (74.7%); Hospital São Vicente de Paulo (16%); and Hospital das Clínicas of Passo Fundo (4%). The same three units concentrated 98.0% of the treatments: 88, 9 and 1%, respectively. The primary care accounted for 5.0% of the notifications. Conclusion: The higher prevalence in young adult men denotes the importance of prevention aimed at this audience. Notifications were mostly from hospitals and a public referral center, with little involvement of primary care in reporting HIV/AIDS.

Balance problems are one of the most frequent symptoms in patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). However, the extent and nature of this balance disorder are not known. The objective of this work was to determine the best evidence for the alteration of postural balance in patients with FMS and analyze differences with healthy controls. To meet this objective, a systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. A bibliographical search was carried out in PubMed Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and SciELO. Observational studies that assessed postural balance in patients with FMS compared to healthy subjects in baseline conditions, were selected. In a random-effect model, the pooled effect was calculated with the Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). Nineteen studies reporting data of 2347 participants (95% female) were included. FMS patients showed poor balance with a large effect on static (SMD = 1.578; 95% CI = 1.164, 1.992), dynamic (SMD = 0.946; 95% CI = 0.598, 1.294), functional balance (SMD = 1.138; 95% CI = 0.689, 1.588) and on balance confidence (SMD = 1.194; 95% CI = 0.914, 1.473). Analysis of the Sensory Organization Test showed large alteration of vestibular (SMD = 1.631; 95% CI = 0.467, 2.795) and visual scores (SMD = 1.317; 95% CI = 0.153, 2.481) compared to healthy controls. Patients with FMS showed worse scores for different measures of postural balance compared to healthy controls. Concretely, FMS patients appear to have poor vestibular and visual scores with a possible somatosensory dependence.

The subjective visual vertical (SVV) test has been frequently used to measure vestibular contribution to the perception of verticality. Recently, mobile devices have been used to efficiently perform this measurement. The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of verticality in subjects with migraines and headaches. A cross-sectional study was conducted that included 28 patients with migraine, 74 with tension-type headache (TTH), and 93 healthy subjects. The SVV test was used through a new virtual reality system. The mean absolute error (MAE) of degrees deviation was also measured to qualify subjects as positive when it was greater than 2.5°. No differences in the prevalence of misperception in verticality was found among healthy subjects (31.18%), migraineurs (21.43%), or those with TTH (33.78%) (p = 0.480). The MAE was not significantly different between the three groups (migraine = 1.36°, TTH = 1.61°, and healthy = 1.68°) (F = 1.097, p = 0.336, and η2 = 0.011). The perception of verticality could not be explained by any variable usually related to headaches. No significant differences exist in the vestibular contribution to the perception of verticality between patients with headaches and healthy subjects. New tests measuring visual and somatosensory contribution should be used to analyze the link between the perception of verticality and headaches.

Background: in physiotherapy, the interest in sonography education has been increasing in recent decades, giving rise to opportunities in education in an attempt to meet the elevated demand. In other health professions, online education has demonstrated to be of interest, and another possibility by which to obtain knowledge. Methods: this exploratory observational prospective study compared the outcomes between onsite versus online education, and was approved by the ethics committee of the Francisco de Vitoria University. Two groups (onsite and online) with 136 attendants and two levels for each (basic and advanced) received the same content but through different presentations. Theoretical exams were conducted via “Kahoot” and practical exams using phantoms, and the results were subject to statistical analyses. Results: the average age of onsite participants was 29.5 (25–35.25) years and 34 (28.5–40.5) for the online participants, with a higher percentage of women. The average score ranks in the Kahoot_basic test were higher for both online groups corresponding to basic (group 1) and advanced (group 2) levels: 7 (6.5, 7.5) for group 1 and 7 (6.5, 8.5) for group 2 vs. the onsite groups: 6 (5.5, 7) for group 1 and 6 (5, 6.5) for group 2. In the practical exam, the model detected that a small negative difference between the Onsite 2 group and the total effect (−1.23148, SE = 0.43687) was significant (t = −2.819, p = 0.00558) with a low effect size (R2adjusted = 0.025) for the measurements of the hollow structure; the difference between the Online 2 and Onsite 1 group was positive (1.5026, SE = 0.5822) and significant (t = 2.5809, p = 0.0113), with a low effect size (R2adjusted = 0.016) for the solid structure depth measurement. Conclusions: the results showed that there could be an opportunity to access sonography knowledge through online education in physical therapy compared to the traditional onsite model. These conclusions support the use of a low-cost and accessible method for ultrasound education.

(1) Background: Headache is a significant public health problem. Despite the association between headache and neck pain, little is known about the relationships among specific activities that generate neck pain and headache. The aim of this study was to identify the specific activities that result in neck pain and unsteadiness, and determine how they are linked to headache in university students. (2) Methods: One hundred and six patients with physician-diagnosed headache and 92 healthy university students completed surveys assessing demographics; the presence, frequency, intensity, and disability of headaches; and activities generating neck pain and unsteadiness. (3) Results: The presence of headache was related to female gender (p = 0.001), neck pain when reading or watching television (p = 0.024), and unsteadiness when moving the head (p = 0.005). Headache-related disability was associated with intensity of neck pain (p < 0.001), neck pain when reading or watching television (p = 0.033), and stumbling (p < 0.001). Headache frequency was related to smoking (p = 0.004), the duration of neck pain-associated symptoms (p = 0.047), and neck pain when driving (p = 0.039). Intensity of headache was associated with female gender (p = 0.002), smoking (p = 0.013), and neck pain-related sleep alterations (p = 0.024). (4) Conclusions: Female gender, smoking, neck pain, and unsteadiness when moving the head are factors related to headache in university students.
