SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new single object spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, able to cover simultaneously both the UV-VIS and NIR bands (350-2000 nm). The instrument is currently in the integration and test phase, approaching the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe (PAE) before shipment to Chile for commissioning. After the assembly and preliminary test of the control electronics at INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Napoli), the two main control cabinets of SOXS are now hosted in Padova, connected to the real hardware. This contribution describes the final electronic cabinets layout, the control strategy and the different integration phases, waiting for the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe and the installation of the instrument in Chile.

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be the specialized facility to observe any transient event with a flexible scheduler at the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering simultaneous spectral coverage in UV-VIS (350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) wavelength regimes with an average of R~4500 for a 1arcsec slit. SOXS also has imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime. Currently, SOXS is being integrated at the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Subsystem- and system-level tests and verification are ongoing to ensure and confirm that every requirement and performance are met. In this paper, we report on the integration and verification of SOXS as the team and the instrument prepare for the Preliminary Acceptance Europe (PAE).

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory [1]. It offers a simultaneous spectral coverage over 350-2000 nm, with two separate spectrographs. In this paper we present the status of the Near InfraRed (NIR) cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph [1], in the range 0.80-2.00 {\mu}m with 15 orders, equipped with an 2k x 2k Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne, working at 40K, that is currently assembled and tested on the SOXS instrument, in the premises of INAF in Padova. The Instrument Control Software of SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter), the forthcoming spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, has reached a mature state of development and is approaching the crucial Preliminary Acceptance in Europe phase. Now that all the subsystems have been integrated in the laboratories of the Padova Astronomical Observatory, the team operates for testing purposes with the whole instrument at both engineering and scientific level. These activities will make use of a set of software peculiarities that will be discussed in this contribution. Using universal predictions provided by classical soft theorems, we revisit the energy emission spectrum for gravitational scatterings of compact objects in the low-frequency expansion. We calculate this observable beyond the zero-frequency limit, retaining an exact dependence on the kinematics of the massive objects. This allows us to study independently the ultrarelativistic or massless limit, where we find agreement with the literature, and the small-deflection or post-Minkowskian (PM) limit, where we provide explicit results up to $\mathcal{O}(G^5)$. These confirm that the high-velocity limit of a given PM order is smoothly connected to the corresponding massless result whenever the latter is analytic in the Newton constant $G$. We also provide explicit expressions for the waveforms to order $\omega^{-1}$, $\log\omega$, $\omega(\log\omega)^2$ in the soft limit, $\omega\to0$, expanded up to sub-subleading PM order, as well as a conjecture for the logarithmic soft terms of the type $\omega^{n-1}(\log\omega)^{n}$ with $n\ge 3$., Comment: 42 pages + references. We argue that gravitational interactions between particles require a departure from the conventional picture of the quantum state of a multiparticle system in terms of tensor products of one-particle states. This modification is essential in order to accommodate the existence of a new boost-like relativistic angular momentum charge which pairs of particles must carry asymptotically due to long-range effects of gravity. These findings challenge conventional assumptions, prompting a reevaluation of the constraints on quantum entanglement between particle subsystems in a black hole geometry., Comment: 7 pages, no figures. Infrared effects in the scattering of particles in gravity and electrodynamics entail an exchange of relativistic angular momentum between pairs of particles and the gauge field. Due to this exchange particles can carry an asymptotically non-vanishing "pairwise" boost-like angular momentum proportional to the product of their couplings to the field. At the quantum level this asymptotic angular momentum suggests the existence of a new quantum number carried by multi-particle states. We argue that such quantum number is related to a modification of the action of the generators of Lorentz transformations on multi-particle states. We derive such a modification using a group-theoretic argument based on the little group of the conformal primary basis for asymptotic states. The corresponding representation is an extension of the ordinary multi-particle Fock representation of the Poincar\'e group. The new multi-particle states belonging to such representation no longer factorize into tensor products of one-particle states. Viewed from a gravitational point of view, our results provide evidence for a universal breakdown of the description of multi-particle sates in terms of Fock space due to infrared back-reaction., Comment: 23 pages, no figures

We introduce a classical version of the loop corrected soft graviton theorem and we use it to compute the universal part of the one-loop (2PM) waveform up to sub-subleading order in the energy $\omega$ of the emitted graviton for spinless black-hole scattering. In particular, we compute the action of the soft operators on the classically resummed four-point amplitude, that can be written in terms of the exponential of the eikonal phase (and is therefore non-perturbative in the Newton's constant $G_N$) and then we perform the usual PM expansion in powers of $G_N$ . We find perfect agreement with the existing 2PM literature at the orders $\omega^{-1}$, $\log\omega$ and $\omega\log^2\omega$, which are universal. Furthermore, we use this method to compute the universal part of the $\omega\log\omega$ contribution to the 2PM waveform. Even if in the present analysis we limit ourselves to compute the soft 2PM waveform, our general formulae can be used to extract all universal PM orders of the terms connected with the infrared divergences, once the impulse at the corresponding precision is known. Our approach, based on the resummed eikonal amplitude, gives a unified picture of the various computations of the classical soft graviton behaviour that are present in the literature since the seminal paper by Weinberg in 1965., Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure. We construct a new Yang-Mills Lagrangian based on a notion of minimal coupling that incorporates classical spin effects. The construction relies on the introduction of a new covariant derivative, which we name "classical spin covariant derivative", that is compatible with the three-point interaction of the $\sqrt{\mathrm{Kerr}}$ solution with the gauge field. The resulting Lagrangian, beside the correct three-point coupling, predicts a unique choice for contact terms and therefore it can be used to compute higher-point amplitudes such as the Compton, unaffected by spurious poles. Using double-copy techniques we use this theory to extract gravity amplitudes and observables that are relevant to describe Kerr binary dynamics to all orders in the spin. In particular, we compute the 2PM ($\mathcal{O}(G^2_N)$) $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering amplitude between two classically spinning objects to all orders in the spin and use it to extract the 2PM scattering angle., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures, version accepted for publication on JHEP

SOXS (SOn of X-Shooter) is a high-efficiency spectrograph with a mean Resolution-Slit product of 3500 over the entire band capable of simultaneously observing the complete spectral range 350-2000 nm. It consists of three scientific arms (the UV-VIS Spectrograph, the NIR Spectrograph and the Acquisition Camera) connected by the Common Path system to the NTT, and the Calibration Unit. We present an overview of the flow from the scientific to the technical requirements, and the realization of the sub-systems. Further, we give an overview of the methodologies used for planning and managing the assembly of the sub-systems, their integration and tests before the acceptance of the instrument in Europe (PAE) along with the plan for the integration of SOXS to the NTT. The Son-Of-XShooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph (UV-VIS & NIR) and acquisition camera scheduled to be mounted on the ESO 3.58-m New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. Although the underlying data reduction processes to convert raw detector data to fully-reduced science ready data are complex and multi-stepped, we have designed the SOXS Data Reduction pipeline with the core aims of providing end-users with a simple-to-use, well-documented command-line interface while also allowing the pipeline to be run in a fully automated state; streaming reduced data into the ESO Science Archive Facility without need for human intervention. To keep up with the stream of data coming from the instrument, there is the requirement to optimise the software to reduce each observation block of data well within the typical observation exposure time. We report the implemented architecture for monitoring the health and the quality of the Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) spectrograph for the New Technology Telescope in La Silla at the European Southern Observatory. Briefly, we report on the innovative no-SQL database approach used for storing time-series data that best suits for automatically triggering alarm, and report high-quality graphs on the dashboard to be used by the operation support team. The system is designed to constantly and actively monitor the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) metrics, as much automatically as possible, reducing the overhead on the support and operation teams. We present development progress of the scheduler for the Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) instrument at the ESO-NTT 3.58 meter telescope. SOXS will be a single object spectroscopic facility, consisting of a two-arms high-efficiency spectrograph covering the spectral range 350-2000 nanometer with a mean resolving power R$\approx$4500. SOXS will be uniquely dedicated to the UV-visible and near infrared follow up of astrophysical transients, with a very wide pool of targets available from the streaming services of wide-field telescopes, current and future. This instrument will serve a variety of scientific scopes in the astrophysical community, with each scope eliciting its specific requirements for observation planning, that the observing scheduler has to meet. Due to directions from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the instrument will be operated only by La Silla staff, with no astronomer present on the mountain. This implies a new challenge for the scheduling process, requiring a fully automated algorithm that should be able to present the operator not only with and ordered list of optimal targets, but also with optimal back-ups, should anything in the observing conditions change. This imposes a fast-response capability to the scheduler, without compromising the optimization process, that ensures good quality of the observations. SOXS is the new spectrograph for the ESO NTT telescope able to cover the optical and NIR bands thanks to two different arms: the UV-VIS (350-850 nm), and the NIR (800-2000 nm). In this article, we describe the final design of the visible camera cryostats, the test facilities for the CCD characterization, and the first results with the scientific detector. The UV-VIS detector system is based on a e2v CCD 44-82, a custom detector head coupled with the ESO Continuous Flowing Cryostat (CFC) cooling system and the New General Detector Controller (NGC) developed by ESO. The laboratory facility is based on an optical bench equipped with a Xenon lamp, filter wheels to select the wavelength, an integrating sphere, and a calibrated diode to measure the flux. This paper outlines the visible camera cryostat, the test facilities for the CCD characterization and the first results with the scientific detector in the laboratory and after the integration to the instrument.

Starting from the leading soft term of the 5-point amplitude, involving a graviton and two Kerr black holes, that factorises into the product of the elastic amplitude without the graviton and the leading soft factor, we compute the infrared divergent contribution to the imaginary part of the two-loop eikonal. Then, using analyticity and crossing symmetry, we determine the radiative contribution to the real part of the two-loop eikonal and from it the radiative part of the deflection angle for spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum, the loss of angular momentum and the zero frequency limit of the energy spectrum for any spin and for any spin orientation. For spin one we find perfect agreement with recent results obtained with the supersymmetric worldline formalism., Comment: 12 pages + bibliography, 2 figures

The partition function of a massless scalar field on a Euclidean spacetime manifold $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times\mathbb{T}^2$ and with momentum operator in the compact spatial dimension coupled through a purely imaginary chemical potential is computed. It is modular covariant and admits a simple expression in terms of a real analytic SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ Eisenstein series with $s=(d+1)/2$. Different techniques for computing the partition function illustrate complementary aspects of the Eisenstein series: the functional approach gives its series representation, the operator approach yields its Fourier series, while the proper time/heat kernel/world-line approach shows that it is the Mellin transform of a Riemann theta function. High/low temperature duality is generalized to the case of a non-vanishing chemical potential. By clarifying the dependence of the partition function on the geometry of the torus, we discuss how modular covariance is a consequence of full SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ invariance. When the spacetime manifold is $\mathbb{R}^p\times\mathbb{T}^{q+1}$, the partition function is given in terms of a SL$(q+1,\mathbb{Z})$ Eisenstein series again with $s=(d+1)/2$. In this case, we obtain the high/low temperature duality through a suitably adapted dual parametrization of the lattice defining the torus. On $\mathbb{T}^{d+1}$, the computation is more subtle. SOXS will be the new spectroscopic facility for the ESO NTT telescope able to cover the optical and NIR bands by using two different arms: the UV-VIS (350-850 nm), and the NIR (800-2000 nm). The UV-VIS detector system is based on a CCD detector 44-82 from e2v, a custom detector head, coupled with the ESO continuous flow cryostats (CFC), a custom cooling system, based on a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and the New General Controller (NGC) developed by ESO. This paper outlines the development status of the system, describes the design of the different parts that make up the UV-VIS arm and is accompanied by a series of information describing the SOXS design solutions in the mechanics and in the electronics parts. In this paper we present the SOXS Scheduler, a web-based application aimed at optimising remote observations at the NTT-ESO in the context of scientific topics of both the SOXS Consortium and regular ESO proposals.This paper will give details of how detected transients from various surveys are inserted, prioritised, and selected for observations with SOXS at the NTT while keeping the correct sharing between GTO time (for the SOXSConsortium) and the regularly approved observing time from ESO proposals. For the 5-years of operation ofSOXS this vital piece of software will provide a night-by-night dynamical schedule, allowing the user to face rapid changes during the operations that might come from varying weather conditions or frequent target of opportunity (ToO) observations that require a rapid response. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is a forthcoming instrument for ESO-NTT, mainly dedicated to the spectroscopic study of transient events and is currently starting the AIT (Assembly, Integration, and Test) phase. It foresees a visible spectrograph, a near-Infrared (NIR) spectrograph, and an acquisition camera for light imaging and secondary guiding. The optimal setup and the monitoring of SOXS are carried out with a set of software-controlled motorized components and sensors. The instrument control software (INS) also manages the observation and calibration procedures, as well as maintenance and self-test operations. The architecture of INS, based on the latest release of the VLT Software (VLT2019), has been frozen; the code development is in an advanced state for what concerns supported components and observation procedures, which run in simulation. In this proceeding we present the INS current status, focusing in particular on the ongoing efforts in the support of two non-standard, "special" devices. SOXS is a new spectrograph for the New Technology Telescope (NTT), optimized for transient and variable objects, covering a wide wavelength range from 350 to 2000 nm. SOXS is equipped with a calibration unit that will be used to remove the instrument signatures and to provide wavelength calibration to the data. The calibration unit will employ seven calibration lamps: a quartz-tungsten-halogen and a deuterium lamp for the flat-field correction, a ThAr lamp and four pencil-style rare-gas lamps for the wavelength calibration. The light from the calibration lamps is injected into the spectrograph mimicking the f/11 input beam of the NTT, by using an integrating sphere and a custom doublet. The oversized illumination patch covers the length of the spectrograph slit homogeneously, with $< 1\%$ variation. The optics also supports the second mode of the unit, the star-simulator mode that emulates a point source by utilizing a pinhole mask. Switching between the direct illumination and pinhole modes is performed by a linear stage. A safety interlock switches off the main power when the lamp box cover is removed, preventing accidental UV exposure to the service personnel. All power supplies and control modules are located in an electronic rack at a distance from the telescope platform. We present our progress on the UV-VIS arm of Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS), a new spectrograph for the NTT. Our design splits the spectral band into four sub-bands that are imaged onto a single detector. Each band uses an optimized high efficiency grating that operates in 1st order (m=1). In our previous paper we presented the concept and preliminary design. SOXS passed a Final Design Review in July 2018 and is well into the construction phase. Here we present the final design, performances of key manufactured elements, and the progress in the assembly. Based on the as-built elements, the expected throughput of the visual arm will be >55%. This paper is accompanied by a series of contributions describing the progress made on the SOXS instrument.

SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new medium resolution wide-band spectrograph to be installed at the 3.6m New Technology Telescope (NTT) in La Silla. SOXS will offer simultaneous wavelength coverage from 0.35 to 2.0 {\mu}m and will be dedicated to the study of transient and variable sources. Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a double-armed (UV-VIS, NIR) spectrograph designed to be mounted at the ESO-NTT in La Silla, now in its Assembly Integration and Verification (AIV) phase. The instrument is designed following a modular approach so that each sub-system can be integrated in parallel before their assembly at system level. INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova will deliver the Common Path (CP) sub-system, which represents the backbone of the entire instrument. In this paper, we describe the foreseen operation for the CP alignment and we report some results already achieved, showing that we envisaged the suitable setup and the strategy to meet the opto-mechanical requirements.

The SOXS is a dual-arm spectrograph (UV-VIS & NIR) and AC due to mounted on the ESO 3.6m NTT in La Silla. Designed to simultaneously cover the optical and NIR wavelength range from 350-2050 nm, the instrument will be dedicated to the study of transient and variable events with many Target of Opportunity requests expected. The goal of the SOXS Data Reduction pipeline is to use calibration data to remove all instrument signatures from the SOXS scientific data frames for each of the supported instrument modes, convert this data into physical units and deliver them with their associated error bars to the ESO SAF as Phase 3 compliant science data products, all within 30 minutes. The primary reduced product will be a detrended, wavelength and flux calibrated, telluric corrected 1D spectrum with UV-VIS + NIR arms stitched together. The pipeline will also generate QC metrics to monitor telescope, instrument and detector health. The pipeline is written in Python 3 and has been built with an agile development philosophy that includes adaptive planning and evolutionary development. The pipeline is to be used by the SOXS consortium and the general user community that may want to perform tailored processing of SOXS data. Test driven development has been used throughout the build using `extreme' mock data. The partition function of gravitons with Casimir-type boundary conditions is worked out. The simplest box that allows one to achieve full analytical control consists of a slab geometry with two infinite parallel planes separated by a distance d. In this setting, linearized gravity, like electromagnetism, is equivalent to two free massless scalar fields, one with Dirichlet and one with Neumann boundary conditions, which in turn may be combined into a single massless scalar with periodic boundary conditions on an interval of length 2d. When turning on a chemical potential for suitably adapted spin angular momentum, the partition function is modular covariant and expressed in terms of an Eisenstein series. It coincides with that for photons. At high temperature, the result provides in closed form all subleading finite-size corrections to the standard (gravitational) black body result. More interesting is the low-temperature/small distance expansion where the leading contribution to the partition function is linear in inverse temperature and given in terms of the Casimir energy of the system, whereas the leading contribution to the entropy is proportional to the area and originates from gravitons propagating parallel to the plates., Comment: Reference added

We discuss an enhancement of the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions in three-dimensional AdS General Relativity to encompass Weyl transformations of the boundary metric. The resulting asymptotic symmetry algebra, after a field-dependent redefinition of the generators, is a direct sum of two copies of the Witt algebra and the Weyl abelian sector. The charges associated to Weyl transformations are non-vanishing, integrable but not conserved due to a flux driven by the Weyl anomaly coefficient. The charge algebra admits an additional non-trivial central extension in the Weyl sector, related to the well-known Weyl anomaly. The temperature inversion symmetry of the partition function of the electromagnetic field in the set-up of the Casimir effect is extended to full modular transformations by turning on a purely imaginary chemical potential for adapted spin angular momentum. The extended partition function is expressed in terms of a real analytic Eisenstein series. These results become transparent after explicitly showing equivalence of the partition functions for Maxwell's theory between perfectly conducting parallel plates and for a massless scalar with periodic boundary conditions., Comment: minor corrections, result unchanged

The Poisson brackets of the gravitational field at null infinity play a pivotal role in establishing the equivalence between the Ward identities involving BMS charges and the soft graviton theorem. In recent literature it was noticed that, in order to reproduce the action of BMS transformations via such Poisson brackets, one needs to add "ad-hoc" boundary terms in the symplectic form. In this note we show that, introducing a suitable splitting of the gravitational field in bulk and boundary degrees of freedom and using techniques of covariant phase space formalism, it is possible to obtain the correct Poisson brackets between the boundary fields without any additional assumption. The same Poisson brackets are used to show that BMS charges canonically generate BMS transformations on the gravitational phase space.

We introduce a non-commutative deformation of the algebra of bipolar spherical harmonics supporting the action of the full Lorentz algebra. Our construction is close in spirit to the one of the non-commutative spherical harmonics associated to the fuzzy sphere and, as such, it leads to a maximal value of the angular momentum. It will cover from near-infrared to visible bands with a spectral resolution of $R \sim 4500$ using two separate, wavelength-optimized spectrographs. A visible camera, primarily intended for target acquisition and secondary guiding, will also provide a scientific "light" imaging mode. In this paper we present the current status of the design of the SOXS instrument control software, which is in charge of controlling all instrument functions and detectors, coordinating the execution of exposures, and implementing all observation, calibration and maintenance procedures. Given the extensive experience of the SOXS consortium in the development of instruments for the VLT, we decided to base the design of the Control System on the same standards, both for hardware and software control. We illustrate the control network, the instrument functions and detectors to be controlled, the overall design of SOXS Instrument Software (INS) and its main components. SOXS will be a unique spectroscopic facility for the ESO NTT telescope able to cover the optical and NIR bands thanks to two different arms: the UV-VIS (350-850 nm), and the NIR (800-1800 nm). In this article, we describe the design of the visible camera cryostat and the architecture of the acquisition system. The UV-VIS detector system is based on a e2v CCD 44-82, a custom detector head coupled with the ESO continuous ow cryostats (CFC) cooling system and the NGC CCD controller developed by ESO. An overview of the optical design for the SOXS spectrograph is presented. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new wideband, medium resolution (R>4500) spectrograph for the ESO 3.58m NTT telescope expected to start observations in 2021 at La Silla. The spectroscopic capabilities of SOXS are assured by two different arms. The UV-VIS (350-850 nm) arm is based on a novel concept that adopts the use of 4 ion-etched high efficiency transmission gratings. The NIR (800- 2000 nm) arm adopts the '4C' design (Collimator Correction of Camera Chromatism) successfully applied in X-Shooter. Other optical sub-systems are the imaging Acquisition Camera, the Calibration Unit and a pre-slit Common Path. We describe the optical design of the five sub-systems and report their performance in terms of spectral format, throughput and optical quality. The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a medium resolution spectrograph R~4500 proposed for the ESO 3.6 m NTT. We present the optical design of the UV-VIS arm of SOXS which employs high efficiency ion-etched gratings used in first order (m=1) as the main dispersers. The spectral band is split into four channels which are directed to individual gratings, and imaged simultaneously by a single three-element catadioptric camera. The expected throughput of our design is >60% including contingency. The SOXS collaboration expects first light in early 2021. This paper is one of several papers presented in these proceedings describing the full SOXS instrument.

Half of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) transformations consist of orientation-preserving conformal homeomorphisms of the extended complex plane known as fractional linear (or Mobius) transformations. These can be of 4 kinds, i.e. they are classified as being parabolic, or hyperbolic, or elliptic, or loxodromic, depending on the number of fixed points and on the value of the trace of the associated 2x2 matrix in the projective version of the SL(2,C) group. The resulting particular forms of SL(2,C) matrices affect also the other half of BMS transformations, and are used here to propose 4 realizations of the asymptotic symmetry group that we call, again, parabolic, or hyperbolic, or elliptic, or loxodromic. In the second part of the paper, we prove that a subset of hyperbolic and loxodromic transformations, those having trace that approaches infinity, correspond to the fulfillment of limit-point condition for singular Sturm-Liouville problems. Thus, a profound link may exist between the language for describing asymptotically flat space-times and the world of complex analysis and self-adjoint problems in ordinary quantum mechanics., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure. In this work the asymptotic structure of space-time and the main properties of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group, which is the asymptotic symmetry group of asymptotically flat space-times, are analysed. Every chapter, except the fourth, begins with a brief summary of the topics that will be dealt through it and an introduction to the main concepts. The work can be divided into three principal parts. The first part includes the first two chapters and is devoted to the development of the mathematical tools that will be used throughout all of the work. In particular we will introduce the notion of space-time and will review the main features of what is referred to as its causal structure and the spinor formalism, which is fundamental in the understanding of the asymptotic properties. In the second part, which includes the third, fourth and fifth chapters, the topological and geometrical properties of null infinity, I, and the behaviour of the fields in its neighbourhood will be studied. Particular attention will be paid to the peeling property. The last part is completely dedicated to the BMS group. We will solve the asymptotic Killing equations and find the generators of the group, discuss its group structure and Lie algebra and eventually try to obtain the Poincar\'e group as its normal subgroup. This work is a pedagogical review dedicated to a modern description of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group. The curved space-times that will be taken into account are the ones that suitably approach, at infinity, Minkowski space-time. In particular we will focus on asymptotically flat space-times. In this work the concept of asymptotic symmetry group of those space-times will be studied. In the first two sections we derive the asymptotic group following the classical approach which was basically developed by Bondi, van den Burg, Metzner and Sachs. This is essentially the group of transformations between coordinate systems of a certain type in asymptotically flat space-times. In the third section the conformal method and the notion of asymptotic simplicity are introduced, following mainly the works of Penrose. This section prepares us for another derivation of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group which will involve the conformal structure, and is thus more geometrical and fundamental. In the subsequent sections we discuss the properties of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group, e.g. its algebra and the possibility to obtain as its subgroup the Poincar\'e group, as we may expect. The paper ends with a review of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs invariance properties of classical gravitational scattering discovered by Strominger, that are finding application to black hole physics and quantum gravity in the literature., Comment: 62 pages, 9 figures.
