Abstract: While biological neurons ensure unidirectional signalling, scalable integrated photonic neurons, such as silicon microresonators, respond the same way regardless of excitation direction due to the Lorentz reciprocity principle. Here, we show that a non-linear Taiji microresonator is a proper optical analogous of a biological neuron showing both a spiking response as well as a direction dependence response., Comment: 4 pages and 2 figures

Abstract: Using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4$ fb$^{-1}$, the forward-backward asymmetry in the $pp \to Z/\gamma^{*} \to \mu^+\mu^-$ process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between $66$ and $116$ GeV, muon pseudorapidities between $2.0$ and $4.5$ and muon transverse momenta above $20$ GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is $\sin^2\theta_{\rm eff}^\ell = 0.23147 \pm 0.00044 \pm 0.00005 \pm 0.00023$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract $\sin^2\theta_{\rm eff}^\ell$ from the asymmetry measurement. 3. Efficient Learning of POMDPs with Known Observation Model in Average-Reward Setting

Abstract: Dealing with Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes is notably a challenging task. We face an average-reward infinite-horizon POMDP setting with an unknown transition model, where we assume the knowledge of the observation model. Under this assumption, we propose the Observation-Aware Spectral (OAS) estimation technique, which enables the POMDP parameters to be learned from samples collected using a belief-based policy. Then, we propose the OAS-UCRL algorithm that implicitly balances the exploration-exploitation trade-off following the $\textit{optimism in the face of uncertainty}$ principle. The algorithm runs through episodes of increasing length. For each episode, the optimal belief-based policy of the estimated POMDP interacts with the environment and collects samples that will be used in the next episode by the OAS estimation procedure to compute a new estimate of the POMDP parameters. Given the estimated model, an optimization oracle computes the new optimal policy. We show the consistency of the OAS procedure, and we prove a regret guarantee of order $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{T \log(T)})$ for the proposed OAS-UCRL algorithm. We compare against the oracle playing the optimal stochastic belief-based policy and show the efficient scaling of our approach with respect to the dimensionality of the state, action, and observation space. We finally conduct numerical simulations to validate and compare the proposed technique with other baseline approaches.

4. Scale-Invariant Learning-to-Rank

Abstract: At Expedia, learning-to-rank (LTR) models plays a key role on our website in sorting and presenting information more relevant to users, such as search filters, property rooms, amenities, and images. A major challenge in deploying these models is ensuring consistent feature scaling between training and production data, as discrepancies can lead to unreliable rankings when deployed. Normalization techniques like feature standardization and batch normalization could address these issues but are impractical in production due to latency impacts and the difficulty of distributed real-time inference. To address consistent feature scaling issue, we introduce a scale-invariant LTR framework which combines a deep and a wide neural network to mathematically guarantee scale-invariance in the model at both training and prediction time. We evaluate our framework in simulated real-world scenarios with injected feature scale issues by perturbing the test set at prediction time, and show that even with inconsistent train-test scaling, using framework achieves better performance than without.

5. Improved stability versions of the Pr\'ekopa-Leindler inequality

Exploiting properties of the transport map between radially decreasing functions and a suitable functional version of the trace inequality, we obtain a uniform stability exponent for the Pr\'ekopa-Leindler inequality. Our result yields an exponent not only uniform in the dimension but also in the log-concavity parameter $\tau = \min(\lambda,1-\lambda)$ associated with its respective version of the Pr\'ekopa-Leindler inequality. Abstract: The rise of foundation models (FMs), coupled with regulatory efforts addressing their risks and impacts, has sparked significant interest in open-source models. However, existing speech FMs (SFMs) fall short of full compliance with the open-source principles, even if claimed otherwise, as no existing SFM has model weights, code, and training data publicly available under open-source terms. In this work, we take the first step toward filling this gap by focusing on the 24 official languages of the European Union (EU). We collect suitable training data by surveying automatic speech recognition datasets and unlabeled speech corpora under open-source compliant licenses, for a total of 950k hours. Abstract: Multi-agent systems in biology, society, and engineering are capable of making decisions through the dynamic interaction of their elements. Nonlinearity of the interactions is key for the speed, robustness, and flexibility of multi-agent decision-making. In this work we introduce modulatory, that is, multiplicative, in contrast to additive, interactions in a nonlinear opinion dynamics model of fast-and-flexible decision-making. The original model is nonlinear because network interactions, although additive, are saturated. Modulatory interactions introduce an extra source of nonlinearity that greatly enriches the model decision-making behavior in a mathematically tractable way. Abstract: We collect and discuss various results on an important family of knots and links called Turk's head knots and links $Th (p,q)$. In the mathematical literature, they also appear under different names such as rosette knots and links or weaving knots and links. Unless being the unknot or the alternating torus links $T(2,q)$, the Turk's head links $Th (p,q)$ are all known to be alternating, fibered, hyperbolic, invertible, non-split, periodic, and prime. The Turk's head links $Th (p,q)$ are also both positive and negative amphichiral if $p$ is chosen to be odd. Moreover, we highlight and present several more results, focusing on Turk's head knots $Th (3,q)$. We finally list several open problems and conjectures for Turk's head knots and links. By applying the mountain pass theorem and the technique of adding one dimensional space, we prove the existence of a nontrivial singular solution for a wide class of nonlinearities. We also establish the Pohozaev identity by proving a pointwise estimate of the gradient near the origin. Some qualitative properties of nontrivial solutions are also given.

Abstract: Quantum theory is notoriously counterintuitive, and yet remains entirely self-consistent when applied universally. Here we uncover a new manifestation of its unusual consequences. We demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally (by means of polarization-encoded single-photon qubits), that Heisenberg's uncertainty principle leads to the impossibility of stringing together logical deductions about outcomes of consecutive non-compatible measurements. This phenomenon resembles the geometry of a Penrose triangle, where each corner is locally consistent while the global structure is impossible. Besides this, we show how overlooking this non-trivial logical structure leads to the erroneous possibility of distinguishing non-orthogonal states with a single measurement.

11. Uncovering Hidden Patterns: Approximate Resurgent Resummation from Truncated Series

Abstract: We analyze truncated series generated as divergent formal solutions of non-linear ordinary differential equations. Motivating the study is a specific non-linear, first-order differential equation, which is the basis of the resurgent formulation of renormalized perturbation theory in quantum field theory. We use the Borel-Pad\'e approximant and classical analysis to determine the analytic structure of the solution using the first few terms of its asymptotic series. Afterward, we build an approximant, consistent with the resurgent properties of the equation. The procedure gives an approximate expression for the Borel-Ecalle resummation of the solution useful for practical applications. 12. Gaussian Heritage: 3D Digitization of Cultural Heritage with Integrated Object Segmentation

Abstract: The creation of digital replicas of physical objects has valuable applications for the preservation and dissemination of tangible cultural heritage. However, existing methods are often slow, expensive, and require expert knowledge. We propose a pipeline to generate a 3D replica of a scene using only RGB images (e.g. photos of a museum) and then extract a model for each item of interest (e.g. pieces in the exhibit). We do this by leveraging the advancements in novel view synthesis and Gaussian Splatting, modified to enable efficient 3D segmentation. This approach does not need manual annotation, and the visual inputs can be captured using a standard smartphone, making it both affordable and easy to deploy. 13. Toward Greener Matrix Operations by Lossless Compressed Formats

Abstract: Sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) is a fundamental operation in machine learning, scientific computing, and graph algorithms. In this paper, we investigate the space, time, and energy efficiency of SpMV using various compressed formats for large sparse matrices, focusing specifically on Boolean matrices and real-valued vectors. Through extensive analysis and experiments conducted on server and edge devices, we found that different matrix compression formats offer distinct trade-offs among space usage, execution time, and energy consumption. Notably, by employing the appropriate compressed format, we can reduce energy consumption by an order of magnitude on both server and single-board computers. Furthermore, our experiments indicate that while data parallelism can enhance execution speed and energy efficiency, achieving simultaneous time and energy efficiency presents partially distinct challenges. Specifically, we show that for certain compression schemes, the optimal degree of parallelism for time does not align with that for energy, thereby challenging prevailing assumptions about a straightforward linear correlation between execution time and energy consumption. Our results have significant implications for software engineers in all domains where SpMV operations are prevalent. 14. Optimizing DNN Inference on Multi-Accelerator SoCs at Training-time

Abstract: The demand for executing Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) with low latency and minimal power consumption at the edge has led to the development of advanced heterogeneous Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) that incorporate multiple specialized computing units (CUs), such as accelerators. Offloading DNN computations to a specific CU from the available set often exposes accuracy vs efficiency trade-offs, due to differences in their supported operations (e.g., standard vs. depthwise convolution) or data representations (e.g., more/less aggressively quantized). A challenging yet unresolved issue is how to map a DNN onto these multi-CU systems to maximally exploit the parallelization possibilities while taking accuracy into account. To address this problem, we present ODiMO, a hardware-aware tool that efficiently explores fine-grain mapping of DNNs among various on-chip CUs, during the training phase. ODiMO strategically splits individual layers of the neural network and executes them in parallel on the multiple available CUs, aiming to balance the total inference energy consumption or latency with the resulting accuracy, impacted by the unique features of the different hardware units. We test our approach on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet, targeting two open-source heterogeneous SoCs, i.e., DIANA and Darkside. We obtain a rich collection of Pareto-optimal networks in the accuracy vs. energy or latency space. We show that ODiMO reduces the latency of a DNN executed on the Darkside SoC by up to 8x at iso-accuracy, compared to manual heuristic mappings. 15. Universality of Dynamic and Thermodynamic Behavior of Polymers near their Glass Transition

Abstract: Describing the dynamics and thermodynamics of amorphous materials near the glass transition is a major challenge in soft-matter physics and polymer engineering. The relaxation time changes many orders of magnitude as the temperature approaches the glass transition, Tg. The glass transition, in turn, depends on the cooling rate (in DSC or dilatometry experiments) and the pressure. While there are several empirical rules relating the thermal expansion, density, relaxation time, temperature, and pressure (Boyer-Spencer, Simha-Boyer, and the Casalini-Roland thermodynamical scaling), there has been no unified theoretical model linking them together. Here, we apply the principle of corresponding states within the dynamic Sanchez-Lacombe two-state, two-(time)scale (SL-TS2) theory to derive a universal polymer equation of state (EoS). The proposed EoS describes the alpha-relaxation time (dynamic EoS) and specific volume of amorphous polymers (volume EoS) using five material parameters - dynamic fragility (m), glass transition temperature, elementary relaxation time, bulk modulus, and specific volume at the glass transition point. The model is compared to experimental data for nine amorphous polymers with varying values of Tg and m, and a good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found. Abstract: A search for the very rare $B^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B_{s}^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is conducted by analysing the $B_c^+\to \pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ process. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9$\text{\,fb}^{-1}$. The signal signatures correspond to simultaneous peaks in the $\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed for either signal decay mode. Abstract: State-of-the-art computer vision tasks, like monocular depth estimation (MDE), rely heavily on large, modern Transformer-based architectures. However, their application in safety-critical domains demands reliable predictive performance and uncertainty quantification. While Bayesian neural networks provide a conceptually simple approach to serve those requirements, they suffer from the high dimensionality of the parameter space. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods, in particular low-rank adaptations (LoRA), have emerged as a popular strategy for adapting large-scale models to down-stream tasks by performing parameter inference on lower-dimensional subspaces. In this work, we investigate the suitability of PEFT methods for subspace Bayesian inference in large-scale Transformer-based vision models. Abstract: We investigate the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth threefold. We introduce a notion of broken Gorenstein structure for finite schemes, and show that its existence guarantees smoothness on the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we conjecture that it is exhaustive: every smooth point admits a broken Gorenstein structure. We give an explicit characterization of the smooth points on the Hilbert scheme of A^3 corresponding to monomial ideals. We investigate the nature of the singular points, and prove several conjectures by Hu. Along the way, we obtain a number of additional results, related to linkage classes, nested Hilbert schemes, and a bundle on the Hilbert scheme of a surface.

19. AUGUR, A flexible and efficient optimization algorithm for identification of optimal adsorption sites

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel flexible optimization pipeline for determining the optimal adsorption sites, named AUGUR (Aware of Uncertainty Graph Unit Regression). Our model combines graph neural networks and Gaussian processes to create a flexible, efficient, symmetry-aware, translation, and rotation-invariant predictor with inbuilt uncertainty quantification. This predictor is then used as a surrogate for a data-efficient Bayesian Optimization scheme to determine the optimal adsorption positions. This pipeline determines the optimal position of large and complicated clusters with far fewer iterations than current state-of-the-art approaches. Further, it does not rely on hand-crafted features and can be seamlessly employed on any molecule without any alterations. Additionally, the pooling properties of graphs allow for the processing of molecules of different sizes by the same model. 22. Solar Neutrinos and the Strongest Oscillation Constraints on Scalar NSI

Abstract: Scalar non-standard neutrino interactions (sNSI) is a scenario where neutrinos can develop a medium dependent contribution to their mass due to a new scalar mediator. This scenario differs from the commonly discussed vector mediator case in that the oscillation effect scales with density rather than density and neutrino energy. Thus the strongest oscillation constraint comes from solar neutrinos which experience the largest density in a neutrino oscillation experiment. 23. Automatic Feature Learning for Essence: a Case Study on Car Sequencing

Abstract: Constraint modelling languages such as Essence offer a means to describe combinatorial problems at a high-level, i.e., without committing to detailed modelling decisions for a particular solver or solving paradigm. Given a problem description written in Essence, there are multiple ways to translate it to a low-level constraint model. Choosing the right combination of a low-level constraint model and a target constraint solver can have significant impact on the effectiveness of the solving process. Furthermore, the choice of the best combination of constraint model and solver can be instance-dependent, i.e., there may not exist a single combination that works best for all instances of the same problem. In this paper, we consider the task of building machine learning models to automatically select the best combination for a problem instance. A critical part of the learning process is to define instance features, which serve as input to the selection model. Our contribution is automatic learning of instance features directly from the high-level representation of a problem instance using a language model. We evaluate the performance of our approach using the Essence modelling language with a case study involving the car sequencing problem.

Abstract: Detecting complex anomalies on massive amounts of data is a crucial task in Industry 4.0, best addressed by deep learning. However, available solutions are computationally demanding, requiring cloud architectures prone to latency and bandwidth issues. This work presents VARADE, a novel solution implementing a light autoregressive framework based on variational inference, which is best suited for real-time execution on the edge. The proposed approach was validated on a robotic arm, part of a pilot production line, and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, obtaining the best trade-off between anomaly detection accuracy, power consumption and inference frequency on two different edge platforms.

26. Simulating Schwinger model dynamics with quasi-one-dimensional qubit arrays

Abstract: Real-time dynamics of the Schwinger model provide an effective description of quark confinement out of equilibrium, routinely employed to model hadronization processes in particle-physics event generators. Ab-initio simulations of such non-perturbative processes are far beyond the reach of existing computational tools, and remain an outstanding open quest for quantum simulators to date. In this work we develop a general strategy to run Schwinger model dynamics on synthetic quantum spin lattices, such as neutral-atom or superconducting-qubit arrays. Our construction encodes the constrained fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom of the model into the geometric shape of a magnetic interface. We show that global magnetic field patterns can drive coherent quantum dynamics of the interface equivalent to the lattice Schwinger Hamiltonian. We rigorously establish that the optimal array required for simulating real-time wave packet collisions and string fragmentation processes with accuracy $\epsilon$ in the continuum field-theory limit, is a quasi-one-dimensional ribbon with polynomial length and polylogarithmic width in $\epsilon^{-1}$. We finally discuss a concrete advantageous implementation using a state-of-the-art dual-species Rydberg atom array. Abstract: In this paper, we deal with the following $(p,q)$-fractional problem $$ (-\Delta)^{s_{1}}_{p}u +(-\Delta)^{s_{2}}_{q}u=\lambda P(x)|u|^{k-2}u+\theta|u|^{p_{s_{1}}^{*}-2}u \, \mbox{ in }\, \Omega,\qquad u=0\, \mbox{ in }\, \mathbb{R}^{N} \setminus \Omega, $$ where $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{N}$ is a general open set, $00$, $P$ is a nontrivial nonnegative weight, while $p_{s_{1}}^{*}=Np/(N-ps_{1})$ is the critical exponent. We prove that there exists a decreasing sequence $\{\theta_j\}_j$ such that for any $j\in\mathbb N$ and with $\theta\in(0,\theta_j)$, there exist $\lambda_*$, $\lambda^*>0$ such that above problem admits at least $j$ distinct weak solutions with negative energy for any $\lambda\in (\lambda_*,\lambda^*)$. On the other hand, we show there exists $\overline{\lambda}>0$ such that for any $\lambda>\overline{\lambda}$, there exists $\theta^*=\theta^*(\lambda)>0$ such that the above problem admits a nonnegative weak solution with negative energy for any $\theta\in(0,\theta^*)$.

28. Data Distribution Shifts in (Industrial) Federated Learning as a Privacy Issue

Abstract: We consider industrial federated learning, a collaboration between a small number of powerful, potentially competing industrial players, mediated by a third party aspiring to improve the service it provides to its customers. We argue that this configuration harbours covert privacy risks that do not arise in e.g. cross-device settings. Companies are very protective of their intellectual property and production processes. Information about changes to their production and the timing of which is to be kept private. We study a scenario in which one of the collaborators infers changes to their competitors' production by detecting potentially subtle temporal data distribution shifts. In this framing, a data distribution shift is always problematic, even if it has no negative effect on training convergence. Thus, our goal is to find means that allow the detection of distributional shifts better than customary evaluation metrics. Based on the assumption that even minor shifts translate into the collaboratively learned machine learning model, the attacker tracks the shared models' internal state with a selection of metrics from literature in order to pick up on relevant changes. In an empirical study on benchmark datasets, we show an honest-but-curious attacker to be capable of detecting subtle distributional shifts on other clients, in some cases long before they become obvious in evaluation.

29. $L^p$-boundedness of Riesz transforms on solvable extensions of Carnot groups

Abstract: Let $G=N\rtimes \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a Carnot group and $\mathbb{R}$ acts on $N$ via automorphic dilations. Homogeneous left-invariant sub-Laplacians on $N$ and $\mathbb{R}$ can be lifted to $G$, and their sum is a left-invariant sub-Laplacian $\Delta$ on $G$. We prove that the first-order Riesz transforms $X \Delta^{-1/2}$ are bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p\in(1,\infty)$, where $X$ is any horizontal left-invariant vector field on $G$. This extends a previous result by Vallarino and the first-named author, who obtained the bound for $p\in(1,2]$. Abstract: Let $L_\nu = -\partial_x^2-(\nu-1)x^{-1} \partial_x$ be the Bessel operator on the half-line $X_\nu = [0,\infty)$ with measure $x^{\nu-1} \,\mathrm{d} x$. In this work we study singular integral operators associated with the Laplacian $\Delta_\nu = -\partial_u^2 + e^{2u} L_\nu$ on the product $G_\nu$ of $X_\nu$ and the real line with measure $\mathrm{d} u$. For any $\nu \geq 1$, the Laplacian $\Delta_\nu$ is left-invariant with respect to a noncommutative hypergroup structure on $G_\nu$, which can be thought of as a fractional-dimension counterpart to $ax+b$ groups. In particular, equipped with the Riemannian distance associated with $\Delta_\nu$, the metric-measure space $G_\nu$ has exponential volume growth. We prove a sharp $L^p$ spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--H\"ormander type for $\Delta_\nu$, as well as the $L^p$-boundedness for $p \in (1,\infty)$ of the associated first-order Riesz transforms. To this purpose, we develop a Calder\'on--Zygmund theory \`a la Hebisch--Steger adapted to the nondoubling structure of $G_\nu$, and establish large-time gradient heat kernel estimates for $\Delta_\nu$. 31. Infrastructure-less UWB-based Active Relative Localization

Abstract: In multi-robot systems, relative localization between platforms plays a crucial role in many tasks, such as leader following, target tracking, or cooperative maneuvering. State of the Art (SotA) approaches either rely on infrastructure-based or on infrastructure-less setups. The former typically achieve high localization accuracy but require fixed external structures. The latter provide more flexibility, however, most of the works use cameras or lidars that require Line-of-Sight (LoS) to operate. Ultra Wide Band (UWB) devices are emerging as a viable alternative to build infrastructure-less solutions that do not require LoS. These approaches directly deploy the UWB sensors on the robots. However, they require that at least one of the platforms is static, limiting the advantages of an infrastructure-less setup. In this work, we remove this constraint and introduce an active method for infrastructure-less relative localization. Our approach allows the robot to adapt its position to minimize the relative localization error of the other platform. To this aim, we first design a specialized anchor placement for the active localization task. Then, we propose a novel UWB Relative Localization Loss that adapts the Geometric Dilution Of Precision metric to the infrastructure-less scenario. Lastly, we leverage this loss function to train an active Deep Reinforcement Learning-based controller for UWB relative localization. An extensive simulation campaign and real-world experiments validate our method, showing up to a 60% reduction of the localization error compared to current SotA approaches.

Abstract: The differential branching fraction and angular coefficients of \ensuremath{\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \rightarrow pK^-\mu^+\mu^-}\xspace decays are measured in bins of the dimuon mass squared and dihadron mass. The analysis is performed using a data set corresponding to 9$\aunit{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector between 2011 and 2018. The data are consistent with receiving contributions from a mixture of $\it{\Lambda}$ resonances with different spin-parity quantum numbers. 33. Joint Localization, Synchronization and Mapping via Phase-Coherent Distributed Arrays

Abstract: Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) systems emerge as a promising technology in beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks to support the deployment of distributed architectures. This paper explores the use of ELAAs to enable joint localization, synchronization and mapping in sub-6 GHz uplink channels, capitalizing on the near-field effects of phase-coherent distributed arrays. We focus on a scenario where a single-antenna user equipment (UE) communicates with a network of access points (APs) distributed in an indoor environment, considering both specular reflections from walls and scattering from objects. The UE is assumed to be unsynchronized to the network, while the APs can be time- and phase-synchronized to each other. We formulate the problem of joint estimation of location, clock offset and phase offset of the UE, and the locations of scattering points (SPs) (i.e., mapping). Through comprehensive Fisher information analysis, we assess the impact of bandwidth, AP array size, wall reflections, SPs and phase synchronization on localization accuracy. Furthermore, we derive the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator, which optimally combines the information collected by all the distributed arrays. To overcome its intractable high dimensionality, we propose a novel three-step algorithm that first estimates phase offset leveraging carrier phase information of line-of-sight (LoS) paths, then determines the UE location and clock offset via LoS paths and wall reflections, and finally locates SPs using a null-space transformation technique. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in distributed architectures supported by radio stripes (RSs) -- an innovative alternative for implementing ELAAs -- while revealing the benefits of carrier phase exploitation and showcasing the interplay between delay and angular information under different bandwidth regimes.

34. Spatially-invariant opinion dynamics on the circle

Abstract: We propose a nonlinear opinion dynamics model for an agent making decisions about a continuous distribution of options in the presence of distributed input. Inspired by perceptual decision-making, we develop the theory for options distributed on the circle, representing, e.g., the set of possible heading directions in planar robotic navigation problems. Interactions among options are encoded through a spatially invariant kernel. We design the kernel to ensure that decision-making is robust, in the sense that only a finite subset of options can be favored over the continuum. We prove the spatial invariance of the model linearization and use this result to prove an opinion-forming bifurcation in the model with zero input. We then use space and time frequency domain analysis of the model linearization to infer the ultra-sensitive input-output behavior of the nonlinear dynamics with input. We illustrate our model's versatility with a robotic navigation example in crowded spaces.

35. Large Language Models Are Strong Audio-Visual Speech Recognition Learners

Abstract: Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have recently become a focal point of research due to their formidable multimodal understanding capabilities. For example, in the audio and speech domains, an LLM can be equipped with (automatic) speech recognition (ASR) abilities by just concatenating the audio tokens, computed with an audio encoder, and the text tokens to achieve state-of-the-art results. On the contrary, tasks like visual and audio-visual speech recognition (VSR/AVSR), which also exploit noise-invariant lip movement information, have received little or no attention. To bridge this gap, we propose Llama-AVSR, a new MLLM with strong audio-visual speech recognition capabilities. It leverages pre-trained audio and video encoders to produce modality-specific tokens which, together with the text tokens, are processed by a pre-trained LLM (e.g., Llama3.1-8B) to yield the resulting response in an auto-regressive fashion. Llama-AVSR requires a small number of trainable parameters as only modality-specific projectors and LoRA modules are trained whereas the multi-modal encoders and LLM are kept frozen. We evaluate our proposed approach on LRS3, the largest public AVSR benchmark, and we achieve new state-of-the-art results for the tasks of ASR and AVSR with a WER of 0.81% and 0.77%, respectively. Abstract: The removal of angular momentum from protostellar systems drives accretion onto the central star and may drive the dispersal of the protoplanetary disk. Winds and jets can contribute to removing angular momentum from the disk, though the dominant process remain unclear. To date, observational studies of resolved disk winds have mostly targeted highly inclined disks. We report the detection of extended H2 and [Ne II] emission toward the young stellar object SY Cha with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS). This is one of the first polychromatic detections of extended H2 toward a moderately inclined, i=51.1 degrees, Class II source. We measure the semi-opening angle of the H2 emission as well as build a rotation diagram to determine the H2 excitation temperature and abundance. We find a wide semi-opening angle, high temperature, and low column density for the H2 emission, all of which are characteristic of a disk wind. 39. Sensitivity analysis with a 3D mixed-dimensional code for DC geoelectrical investigations of landfills: synthetic tests

Abstract: Electrical resistivity tomography is a suitable technique for non-invasive monitoring of municipal solid waste landfills, but accurate sensitivity analysis is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of geoelectrical investigations and to properly design data acquisition. Commonly, a thin high-resistivity membrane in placed underneath the waste to prevent leachate leakage. In the construction of a numerical framework for sensitivity computation, taking into account the actual dimensions of the electrodes and, in particular, of the membrane, can lead to extremely high computational costs. In this work, we present a novel approach for numerically computing sensitivity effectively by adopting a mixed-dimensional framework, where the membrane is approximated as a 2D object and the electrodes as 1D objects. The code is first validated against analytical expressions for simple 4-electrode arrays and a homogeneous medium. It is then tested in simplified landfill models, where a 2D box-shaped liner separates the landfill body from the surrounding media, and 48 electrodes are used. The results show that electrodes arranged linearly along both sides of the perimeter edges of the box-shaped liner are promising for detecting liner damage, with sensitivity increasing by 2-3 orders of magnitude, even for damage as small as one-sixth of the electrode spacing in diameter. Good results are also obtained when simulating an electrical connection between the landfill and the surrounding media that is not due to liner damage. The next steps involve evaluating the minimum number of configurations needed to achieve suitable sensitivity with a manageable field effort and validating the modeling results with downscaled laboratory tests.

Abstract: We present novel methods to perform plenoptic imaging at the diffraction limit by measuring intensity correlations of light. The first method is oriented towards plenoptic microscopy, a promising technique which allows refocusing and depth-of-field enhancement, in post-processing, as well as scanning free 3D imaging. To overcome the limitations of standard plenoptic microscopes, we propose an adaptation of Correlation Plenoptic Imaging (CPI) to the working conditions of microscopy. We consider and compare different architectures of CPI microscopes, and discuss the improved robustness with respect to previous protocols against turbulence around the sample. The second method is based on measuring correlations between the images of two reference planes, arbitrarily chosen within the tridimensional scene of interest, providing an unprecedented combination of image resolution and depth of field. 41. Constraints on RG Flows from Protected Operators

Abstract: We consider protected operators with the same conformal dimensions in the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point. We derive a sum rule for the difference between the two-point function coefficient of these operators in the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point which depends on the two-point function of the scalar operator. In even dimensional conformal field theories, scalar operators with exactly integer conformal dimensions are associated with Type-B conformal anomalies. The sum rule, in these cases, computes differences between Type-B anomaly coefficients. We argue the positivity of this difference in cases in which the conformal manifold contains weakly coupled theories. The results are tested in free theories as well as in $\mathcal N = 2$ superconformal QCD, necklace quivers and holographic RG flows. 42. Gamma-ray burst spectral-luminosity correlations in the synchrotron scenario

Abstract: For over two decades, gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission spectra were modelled with smoothly-broken power laws (Band function), and a positive and tight correlation between the spectral rest-frame peak energy $E_p$ and the total isotropic-equivalent luminosity $L_{iso}$ was found, constituting the so-called Yonetoku relation. However, more recent studies show that many prompt emission spectra are well described by the synchrotron radiation model, hence significantly deviating from the Band function. In this work, we test the impact of a more suited spectral model such as an idealized synchrotron spectrum from non-thermal electrons on the Yonetoku relation and its connection with physical parameters. We select GRBs with measured redshift observed by Fermi/GBM together with high energy observations (>30 MeV), and perform spectral analysis dividing them in two samples: the single-bin sample, using the light curve peak spectrum of each GRB, and the multiple-bins sample, where we explore the whole duration of 13 bright bursts with time-resolved spectral analysis. We observed that the $E_p$ of synchrotron spectra in fast-cooling regime ($\nu_m/\nu_c\gg1$) is generally larger than the one provided by the Band function. For this reason, we do not find any $E_p-L_{iso}$ correlation in our samples except for the GRBs in an intermediate-cooling regime ($1<\nu_m/\nu_c<3$), namely where peak and break energies are very close. We instead find in both our samples a new tight correlation between the rest-frame cooling frequency $\nu_{c,z}$ and $L_{iso}$: $\nu_{c,z} \propto L_{iso}^{(0.53 \pm 0.06)}$. These results suggest that, assuming that prompt emission spectra are produced by synchrotron radiation, the physical relation is between $\nu_{c,z}$ and $L_{iso}$. Abstract: The ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}(\to D^{+(0)}{\Lambda}){\pi}^{-}}$ decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the~$\text{LHCb}$ experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined to be $3/2^{+}$ with a significance of more than $6.5\sigma$ ($3.5\sigma$) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}{\pi}^{-}}$ transitions are measured to be $-0.92\pm0.10\pm0.05$ ($-0.92\pm0.16\pm0.22$), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 44. Optical turbulence forecast for the European Solar Telescope (EST): the challenge of the day-time regime

Abstract: In this contribution we present preliminary results of a study applied to the Observatories of Roque de Los Muchachos (La Palma) and Teide (Tenerife) in Canary Islands aiming to investigate the possibility to implement an automatic system for the optical turbulence forecasting for the European Solar Telescope (EST) telescope. The study has been carried out in the context of the SOLARNET project and the two mentioned sites were the pre-selected sites for EST. This analysis aimed to investigate the possibility to extend the methodology of the forecast of the optical turbulence developed by our team and performed on top-class ground-based telescopes dedicated to night time observations such as ALTA (@ LBT) and FATE (@ VLT) to the day-time regime. As an ancillary output our very preliminary analysis concludes, that the two sites of Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) and Teide Observatory (TO) show comparable characteristics during the day time. Abstract: In this contribution we report the on-going progresses of the project FATE, an operational automatic forecast system conceived to deliver forecasts of a set of astroclimatic and atmospheric parameters having the aim to support the science operations (i.e. the Service Mode) at the Very Large Telescope. The project has been selected at conclusion of an international open call for tender opened by ESO and it fits with precise technical specifications. In this contribution we will present the ultimate goals of this service once it will be integrated in the VLT operations, the forecasts performances at present time and the state of the art of the project. 46. An efficient finite-resource formulation of non-Abelian lattice gauge theories beyond one dimension

Abstract: Non-Abelian gauge theories provide an accurate description of fundamental interactions, as both perturbation theory and quantum Monte Carlo computations in lattice gauge theory, it when applicable, show remarkable agreement with experimental data from particle colliders and cosmological observations. Complementing these computations, or combining them with quantum-inspired Hamiltonian lattice computations on quantum machines to improve continuum limit predictions with current quantum resources, is a formidable open challenge. Here, we propose a resource-efficient method to compute the running of the coupling in non-Abelian gauge theories beyond one spatial dimension. We first represent the Hamiltonian on periodic lattices in terms of loop variables and conjugate loop electric fields, exploiting the Gauss law to retain the gauge-independent ones. Then, we identify a local basis for small and large loops variationally to minimize the truncation error while computing the running of the coupling on small tori. Our method enables computations at arbitrary values of the bare coupling and lattice spacing with current quantum computers, simulators and tensor-network calculations, in regimes otherwise inaccessible., Comment: 12 pages + 17 pages appendix/references, 9 figures

47. The representation landscape of few-shot learning and fine-tuning in large language models

Abstract: In-context learning (ICL) and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) are two common strategies for improving the performance of modern large language models (LLMs) on specific tasks. Despite their different natures, these strategies often lead to comparable performance gains. However, little is known about whether they induce similar representations inside LLMs. We approach this problem by analyzing the probability landscape of their hidden representations in the two cases. More specifically, we compare how LLMs solve the same question-answering task, finding that ICL and SFT create very different internal structures, in both cases undergoing a sharp transition in the middle of the network. In the first half of the network, ICL shapes interpretable representations hierarchically organized according to their semantic content. In contrast, the probability landscape obtained with SFT is fuzzier and semantically mixed. In the second half of the model, the fine-tuned representations develop probability modes that better encode the identity of answers, while the landscape of ICL representations is characterized by less defined peaks. Our approach reveals the diverse computational strategies developed inside LLMs to solve the same task across different conditions, allowing us to make a step towards designing optimal methods to extract information from language models.

Abstract: Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. 49. Free convection in fractured porous media: a numerical study

Abstract: The objective of this study is to better understand the influence of fractures on the possibility of free convection in porous media. To this aim, we introduce a mathematical model for density driven flow in the presence of fractures, and the corresponding numerical approximation. In addition to the direct numerical solution of the problem we propose and implement a novel method for the assessment of convective stability through the eigenvalue analysis of the linearized numerical problem. The new method is shown to be in agreement with existing literature cases both in simple and complex fracture configurations. With respect to direct simulation in time, the results of the eigenvalue method lack information about the strength of convection and the steady state solution, they however provide detailed (quantitative) information about the behavior of the solution near the initial equilibrium condition. Furthermore, not having to solve a time-dependent problem makes the method computationally very efficient. Finally, the question of how the porous matrix interacts with the fracture network to enable free convection is examined: the porous matrix is shown to be of key importance in enabling convection for complex fracture networks, making stability criteria based on the fracture network alone somewhat limited in applicability.

Abstract: A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels.
