DC fault location technology is crucial for estimating the fault location and developing multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) systems. This article presents a novel fault location method using the parameter fitting approach. The propagation of traveling waves (TWs) in the decoupled line-mode fault network is first discussed, resulting in analytical expressions for the backward line-mode current TWs containing fault location information. Then, the adaptive multi-step Levenberg–Marquardt (AMLM) algorithm is applied for parameter fitting owing to its fast processing speed and precision. The exact fault location is estimated using the fitted coefficient. Different testing MTDC systems modeled in PSCAD/EMTDC and a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) validate the proposed fault location method. Based on numerous simulation tests, the AMLM-based parameter fitting and the proposed method are accurate, with errors smaller than 0.5%. Compared to the existing methods, the proposed method has desired performance under close-in faults, can withstand 35 dB noise interference, and obviates the need for an extremely high sampling frequency, estimation of tws velocity, and communication devices.

The deployment of voltage source converters (VSC) to facilitate flexible interconnections between the AC grid, renewable energy system (RES) and Multi-terminal DC (MTDC) grid is on the rise. However, significant challenges exist in exploiting coordinated operations for such AC/VSC-MTDC hybrid power systems. One of the most critical issues is how to achieve the optimal operation of such wide-area systems involving several power entities with as minimal communication burden as possible. To address this issue, an enhanced AC/DC optimal power flow (OPF) is specifically proposed. Firstly, a mixed-integer convex AC/DC OPF model is explicitly formulated to describe the optimal operation of such hybrid power systems. Subsequently, a nested distributed optimization method with double iteration loops is developed to offer optimal system-wide decision-making through a more “thorough” distributed communication architecture. In the outer iteration, the original AC/DC OPF problem is decomposed into several slave problems (SPs) associated with systems (including the AC grid and RESs) and one master problem (MP) associated with the integrated VSC-MTDC grid. Generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) serves to solve the master and slave problems iteratively. Techniques such as multi-cut generation and asynchronous updating are utilized to upgrade the GBD performance of computation efficiency and address communication delays. In the inner iteration, the master problem is continuously decomposed into multiple sub-MPs associated with individual VSCs. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed to solve these sub-MPs iteratively. Proximal terms and heuristic approaches are embedded to enable parallel computation and handling of integer variables. Numerical experiment results finally validate the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced AC/DC OPF. The constructed AC/DC OPF model exhibits acceptable accuracy in terms of power flow calculation, and the developed nested distributed optimization method showcases decent convergence rate and solution optimality performances.

The performance of existing protection methods for multi-terminal direct current systems depends on the availability and sizes of boundary components. To overcome the limitation, this paper proposes a non-unit DC line protection method based on the normalized backward traveling waves (BTWs) of the 1-mode voltage. Firstly, traveling wave propagation characteristics are analyzed, and a rationalization approach based on vector fitting is proposed. Next, the analytical expressions of normalized BTWs are derived, with the negative correlation between them and fault distance proved. Then, the derivative-free conjugate gradient algorithm is utilized for amplitude fitting and normalization calculation. Finally, a non-unit protection method using the normalized BTWs is developed. The performance is validated for both electromagnetic transient PSCAD/EMTDC and real-time digital RSCAD/RTDS simulation. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately identify faults with various fault resistances and locations without requiring boundary components and high sampling frequencies, and it is robust against noise disturbances.

The extensive integration of distributed renewable energy resources (DRES) can lead to several issues in power grids, particularly in distribution grids, due to their inherent intermittency. This paper presents a stochastic simulation-based approach to estimate the maximum permissible penetration level of DRES and to determine the optimal capacity of centralized battery energy storage systems (BESS) in distribution networks while adhering to technical constraints. The stochastic method creates a wide range of scenarios under various conditions. For each scenario, our proposed approach calculates the maximum allowable penetration level of DRES and the required BESS capacity with different DRES control logics. The maximum allowable penetration level of DRES and the requirements of the BESS capacity are determined by an analysis of various simulation results. This paper’s unique contribution lies in equipping distribution system operators (DSOs) with the ability to compare results and select the most appropriate voltage control and power smoothing methods. This aids in mitigating challenges associated with overvoltage and intermittency issues arising from DRES-generated power, thereby enhancing the overall resilience and reliability of the power grid. Case studies that include four voltage control algorithms and three power smoothing methods demonstrate the universality and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

An economical approach for incorporating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) onto DP-2 vessels is presented in this research. The paper deals with developing a Battery Optimization for Optimal Sizing and Throughput Energy Regulation (BOOSTER) framework for putting research findings into practice by optimizing battery size, technology choice and power generation scheduling while considering battery degradation. Twelve battery sizes are analyzed based on three key performance metrics: return on investment, payback period, and years of profitability. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is developed to operate the energy and power management system of the vessel in a fuel and economically efficient manner. The study considers two load profiles of a DP-2 vessel operating near Taiwan and the North Sea. Our findings emphasize the significance of taking battery ownership costs in the form of energy throughput cost and fuel price into account, resulting in a longer battery lifetime and higher return on investment. The research also proposes a BESS operation matrix that provides vessel operators with valuable information on BESS usage for economic benefits. This matrix translates analytics and decision-making into tangible actions that can be implemented in real-time operations. Based on the findings, energy systems may be optimized for a sustainable future, which benefits vessel operators and industry stakeholders.

This study presents the initialisation of a hybrid alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) power system to determine the operation point around which the system is linearised as a starting point for an electromagnetic or harmonic stability analysis. To this end, each AC or DC power system component is modelled in the Fourier transform domain and further adjusted to a simplified representation compatible with a power flow formulation. The study also presents how voltage source converter (VSC) high-voltage DC-based systems can be analysed when the different VSC controls are applied. The result of the power flow solution is then used for the power converters’ initialisation.

The multi-modular converter (MMC) technology is becoming the preferred option for the increased deployment of variable renewable energy sources (RES) into electrical power systems. MMC is known for its reliability and modularity. The fast adjustment of the MMC’s active/reactive powers, within a few milliseconds, constitutes a major research challenge. The solution to this challenge will allow accelerated integration of RES, without creating undesirable stability issues in the future power system. This paper presents a variant of model predictive control (MPC) for the grid-connected MMC. MPC is defined using a Laguerre function to reduce the computational burden. This is achieved by reducing the number of parameters of the MMC cost function. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed MPC is verified in the real-time digital simulations. Additionally, in this paper, a comparison between an accurate mathematical and real-time simulation (RSCAD) model of an MMC is given. The comparison is done on the level of small-signal disturbance and a Mean Absolute Error (MAE). In the MMC, active and reactive power controls, AC voltage control, output current control, and circulating current controls are implemented, both using PI and MPC controllers. The MPC’s performance is tested by the small and large disturbance in active and reactive powers, both in an offline and online simulation. In addition, a sensitivity study is performed for different variables of MPC in the offline simulation. Results obtained in the simulations show good correspondence between mathematical and real-time analytical models during the transient and steady-state conditions with low MAE. The results also indicate the superiority of the proposed MPC with the stable and fast active/reactive power support in real-time simulation.

This paper proposes a Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) model of a 2 GW offshore network with the parallel operation of two Modular Multi-level Converter (MMC)—High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission links connecting four Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) to two onshore systems, which represent a large scale power system. Additionally, to mitigate the challenges corresponding to voltage and frequency stability issues in large scale offshore networks, a Direct Voltage Control (DVC) strategy is implemented for the Type-4 Wind Generators (WGs), which represent the OWFs in this work. The electrical power system is developed in the power system simulation software RSCADTM, that is suitable for performing EMT based simulations. The EMT model of 2 GW offshore network with DVC in Type-4 WGs is successfully designed and it is well-coordinated between the control structures in MMCs and WGs.

Decarbonization of power systems has put Renewable Energy Sources (RES) at the forefront when it comes to electric power generation. The increasing shares of converter-connected renewable generation cause a decrease of the rotational inertia of the Electric Power System (EPS), and consequently deteriorate the system capability to withstand large load-generation imbalances. Low-inertia systems are subjected to fast and large frequency changes in case of in-feed loss, where the traditional primary frequency control is not sufficient to preserve the frequency stability and to maintain the frequency above the critical value. One possible solution to this rising problem is seen in Fast Frequency Response (FFR) provided by the High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC)-based systems. This paper presents the adaptive FFR control of HVDC-based systems for frequency stability enhancement in the low-inertia system. The EPS is considered as a “black box” and the HVDC response is determined only using the locally measured frequency change. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) was developed and demonstrated to provide faster and more appropriate frequency response compared to the PI controller. The described adaptive HVDC control considers the size of disturbance and the inertia of the power system, and it is verified by simulations on the IEEE 39 bus test system implemented in MATLAB/Simulink for different system configurations and different sizes of disturbance.

Due to the extension of the power grid with many complex and compact pieces of power equipment, transformers will be more exposed to fast transient, resulting from various resonance conditions. Transformer resonance can result in severe overvoltage on internal parts of the winding, leading to insulation failure and, consequently, transformer outage. The main reasons for resonance occurrence, the practical method to measure the resonance of transformers, and the solution for preventing transformer resonances have been discussed in the scientific reports over the past few decades; however, a comprehensive review of these studies is not present in the literature. Hence this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review to categorize the main reasons for transformer resonance, modeling methods, and appropriate solutions to suppress this phenomenon and suggest some prospective protection for future works.

Overvoltage instability is a growing concern in a standalone low-voltage (LV) microgrid (MG) with non-dispatchable intermittent renewable energies such as residential and commercial photovoltaic generators (PVGs). Several overvoltage controllers used in PV arrays have adopted the concept of standard deviation from the maximum power point (MPP) to curtail the generated power. However, these solutions lack presenting analytical expression for the MPP deviation size, settings tuning independent of the MG’s/PV’s characteristics, scalability, and accurate power-sharing in the same control structure. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a new analytical MPP tracking (MPPT)-based overvoltage and power-sharing control method using the series equivalent resistance of the PV module model. By applying this analytical expression, the size of the PV array voltage shift to the right-hand side of the MPP is obtained in terms of overvoltage level, while all PVGs proportionally curtail the active power output. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is shown in various low-demand and high-PV generation cases through a real time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. In addition to the fast and accurate performance, the presented method benefits from the straightforward and communication-free structure as it solely exploits the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage. Also, the method’s threshold does not require re- tuning after MG restructure, ensuring scalability. Without relying on other microgrid facilities, the proposed methodology is accordingly an effective solution for practical PV-based LV MGs.

Due to their weak nature, such as low inertia, offshore energy hubs are prone to unprecedented fast dynamic phenomena. This can lead to undesired instability problems. Recent literature, with main focus on onshore systems, suggests that electrolysers could be an attractive option to support wind generators in the mitigation of balancing problems. This paper presents an Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) model for real-time simulation based study of the dynamics of active power and voltage responses of offshore hubs due to wind speed fluctuations. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the ability of an electrolyser to support an offshore energy hub under different scenarios and with different locations of the electrolyser. Two locations of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers were considered: centralised (at the AC common bus of the hub) or distributed (at the DC link of the wind turbines). Numerical simulations conducted in RSCAD® on a 2 GW offshore hub with 4 × 500 MW wind power plants and 330 or 600 MW PEM electrolysers show that electrolysers can effectively support the mitigation of sudden wind speed variations, irrespective of the location. The distributed location of electrolysers can be beneficial to prevent large spillage of wind power generation during the isolation of faults within the hub.
