Introduction: Abdominal obesity is the excess of deposits of fat in the abdominal region and it is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is a metabolic risk factor for non-communicable diseases, and it is the leading cause of premature death in the world. Objective: to determine the association between abdominal obesity and hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia history in Panamanian college students. Materials and methods: Analytical cross- sectional study carried out in 434 college students from four different cities of a private university in Panamá. Every participant in the study signed written consent. Abdominal obesity was established as a waist circumference of ≥80 cm in women and ≥90 cm in men. Hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia history were established with the basic questionnaire in the STEPS World Health Organization Instrument. Descriptive, as well as bivariate and multivariate analysis, were realized using logistic regression models. Results: 36.41% of participants had abdominal obesity (no statistically significant difference was found by sex). 14.29%, 9.22%, and 13.82% of the students surveyed reported a history of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia respectively (no statistically significant difference was found by sex). After adjusting by sex, age, and socioeconomic level, abdominal obesity was associated with hypertension antecedent (OR=2.06, CI 95%: 1.183-3.597, p=0.011). Conclusions: Students who evidenced abdominal obesity were more likely to have a hypertension history. The study recommends implementing strategies that promote healthy living habits to reduce future cardiovascular risk in the Panamanian university population

Amniotic eggs are multifunctional structures that enabled early tetrapods to colonize the land millions of years ago, and are now the reproductive mode of over 70% of all terrestrial amniotes. Eggshell morphology is at the core of animal survival, mediating the interactions between embryos and their environment, and has evolved into a massive diversity of forms and functions in modern reptiles. These functions are critical to embryonic survival and may serve as models for new antimicrobial and/or breathable membranes. However, we still lack critical data on the basic structural and functional properties of eggs, particularly of reptiles. Here, we first characterized egg shape, shell thickness, porosity, and mineralization of eggs from 91 reptile species using optical images, scanning electron microscopy, and micro computed tomography, and collected data on nesting ecology from the literature. We then used comparative analyses to test hypotheses on the selective pressures driving their evolution. We hypothesized that eggshell morphology has evolved to protect shells from physical damage and desiccation, and, in support, found a positive relationship between thickness and precipitation, and a negative relationship between porosity and temperature. Although mineralization varied extensively, it was not correlated with nesting ecology variables. Ancestral state reconstructions show thinning and increased porosity over evolutionary time in squamates, but the opposite in turtles and crocodilians. Egg shape, size, porosity and calcification were correlated, suggesting potential structural or developmental tradeoffs. This study provides new data and insights into the morphology and evolution of reptile eggs, and raises numerous questions for additional research.

- Abstract
A reform always implies an adjustment, a transformation, or a change. But one always hopes that a reform is for the better, and that it will benefit those who will be affected by the reform. Educational reforms have been seen in this way, since the world changes and we change with it. In this line of thought, we can dare to think that when an educational reform is considered, it concerns all of us, as we are teachers, students, managers and society in general. We have great expectations in all aspects, from economics, which in the end involves all of us, to quality, social reconstruction in the reduction of poverty, providing quality of life, and reducing the gap between the rich and the poor.

- Abstract
Alienation and mercantile fetishism are two determining categories of the antagonistic social formations that allow to explain the convergence of the subjects by means of abstractions. Thus the social and practical bond of men that takes the form of an immediate relation, in which the alienation of the thinking of the subject by himself stands out, vanishes as long as the material premises of history as social production are considered. It is proposed then to emphasize the relation between alienation and fetishism, and also as an organic differentiation of an articulated totality of determinations, from which the nexus of abstraction with history is understood, without losing sight of the fact that social production is the foundation of the social relation., La enajenación y el fetichismo mercantil son dos categorías determinantes de las formaciones sociales antagónicas que permiten explicar la convergencia de los sujetos mediante abstracciones.

- Abstract
Introduction: Upper-body muscular endurance (UBME) and aerobic capacity (AC) are essential components of physical fitness. Low levels of these components are related to cardiovascular disease. Purpose: To assess the association between UBME and AC levels in college students of physical culture. Methodology: Analytical cross-sectional study carried out in 192 students (169 men, 23 women; median age 20 years). Every participant of the study signed written consent. UMBE was the dependent variable assessed by the push-up test, and AC was the main independent variable assessed using the 20 m shuttle run test. To analyze differences by sex, and academic semester, Fischer exact, Student's T, and U Mann-Whitney tests were applied. Descriptive, as well as bivariate and multivariate analysis, were realized using logistic regression models. Results: 82.29 % of participants had healthy levels of UBME. Respecting the academic semester, students had a higher probability of having healthy levels of UBME as semesters increased (OR: 1.23, 95 % CI: 1.06 to 1.44, p = 0.007). Concerning AC, 58.33 % of participants registered healthy levels. After adjusting by sex, age, socioeconomic level, and academic semester, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), was associated with healthy levels of UBME (OR: 1.157, CI 95 %: 1.O71 – 1.249, p=<0.001). Conclusions: Students had a higher probability of presenting healthy levels of UBME as semesters of study increased, and those with a higheVO2max were more likely to have healthy levels of UBME., Introdução: A resistência muscular do corpo superior (UBME) e a capacidade aeróbica (AC) são componentes essenciais da aptidão física. EGGSHELLS ,REPTILES ,BIOMIMETIC materials ,WATER filters ,ABSORPTION ,INFRARED spectroscopy - Abstract
The amniotic egg fulfils a critical role in reproduction by serving as an interface between the external environment and the embryo. Because non-avian reptiles are rarely incubated, they must be heated by, and absorb water from, the oviposition site for the developing embryo. The mechanisms by which they absorb sufficient, but not excess, water and how these mechanisms vary with local habitat is largely unknown, despite its significance to their evolution. Here, we first performed histology, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic vapor sorption experiments to elucidate the mechanisms of eggshell absorption for 56 reptile species. Then, we used phylogenetic comparative analysis to test the hypothesis that the absorptive capacity of reptile eggshells increases with aridity of the environment. We found that water absorption increases in the presence of a superficial mucopolysaccharide layer and decreases with increased calcium content. We found that eggs from arid environments have highly absorbent eggshells, but only in species with weakly calcified shells. Our results suggest that reptile eggshells have over evolutionary time tuned absorptive capacity to environmental moisture level. Since these eggs often must sustain conflicting constraints, they may serve as inspirations for new biomimetic materials, such as water filtering membranes or humidity sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physical environment has a strong influence on the lives or organisms by limiting the way energy is gained and expended determining the capacity of organisms to invest in activities like reproduction. The avian nest site and structure, through its effects on the thermal conditions of the proximal environment of the incubating parent can affect several aspects of an individual’s reproductive success. On a larger scale, characteristics of the oviposition site can impact the spatial distribution of a species and consequently several aspects of population dynamics. In this thesis I investigate the importance of the thermal environment and nesting habitat on the reproductive performance of a sea duck, the Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) breeding in a cold environment. First I described the spatial variation in nest distribution in relation to female’s and nest attributes. Females of similar quality formed aggregations of nests and clusters of high productivity were occupied earlier in the season and at higher densities. Eiders seemed to choose to nest sites based on biotic (conspecifics) rather than abiotic (microclimate) cues. By providing females with artificial shelters I tested some of the effects of microclimate on individual physiology and use of energy during incubation. Females experienced improved microclimatic conditions provided by well-sheltered nest-sites. Nest shelter conferred advantages both to incubating females by allowing energy savings and to their clutches by providing more stable incubation conditions. Shelter did not have an appreciable effect on the female’s stress response. However, in exposed areas, females with high levels of corticosterone hatched a lower proportion of eggs than females with low corticosterone. Behavioural and functional aspects nest construction were tested first, by removing down from nests on repeated occasions throughout incubation and then by testing the effects of different amounts of down on the microclimate of incubation. Females did not replace the removed down suggesting the existence of constrains on the allocation of down to the nest. Large amounts of down in the nest contributed to more stable incubation conditions but females were able to counterbalance poor nest insulation and keep incubation temperature constant but the costs of doing this are unclear. Finally, I assessed the influence of environmental variability on the onset of incubation and short-term fluctuations in population size for the study colony with data from 1977 to 2006. I found that after mild winters female Eiders lay earlier in the season perhaps because milder conditions allow them to attain the necessary body condition for reproduction sooner. Summer temperature had a lagged effect (2 yr) on colony size that could be related to the delayed maturity (age at first reproduction) presented by Common Eiders and the influence of climate on influence recruitment rate to the population. The evidence presented here shows that Common Eiders are strongly influenced by their thermal environment on reproduction but by choosing a good nest they can ameliorate those effects. However nest site selection seems to be strongly linked to female quality rather than to nest properties.

Female birds can influence offspring fitness by varying the relative quantities of egg components they deposit within and between clutches. Antimicrobial proteins (lysozyme, ovotransferrin, and avidin) are significant components of the avian albumen and likely aid in defense of embryos from microbial infection. Within clutches, females may enhance antimicrobial defense of early-laid eggs to protect them from the high risk of infection incurred before the onset of incubation. Among entire clutches, females may invest more resources in young sired by more attractive males because they have higher reproductive value. We tested these hypotheses by quantifying antimicrobial protein distribution within and among clutches in blue tit eggs. Contrary to our hypothesis, clutches showed no differential deposition of lysozyme or avidin within clutches, but eggs laid in the middle of the sequence had higher concentrations of ovotransferrin than eggs in the beginning and end. Consistent with our second hypothesis, we found that females produced eggs with higher concentrations of lysozyme (although not ovotransferrin or avidin) when mated to more attractive (more UV-reflective) males. Furthermore, females mated to polygynous males deposited less lysozyme than those mated to monogamous males. These data suggest that allocation of lysozyme at the clutch level may be a maternal effect mediated by male qualities.

- Abstract

This article explores the function and consequences of fluorescence in tetrapods, both in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. It emphasizes the importance of considering physiological requirements and environmental factors that affect fluorescence perception. The article suggests that fluorescence may serve a communicative purpose and discusses potential roles in communication, predator avoidance, and noncommunicative functions. While fluorescent proteins have been found to have various potential functions, in many cases, fluorescence may not have a specific function and may be a by-product of selection on other traits. The article highlights the need for further research to understand the mechanisms and implications of fluorescence, which could also have applications in biomaterial development.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Until recently, and when compared with diurnal birds that use contrasting plumage patches and complex feather structures to convey visual information, communication in nocturnal and crepuscular species was considered to follow acoustic and chemical channels. However, many birds that are active in low-light environments have evolved intensely white plumage patches within otherwise inconspicuous plumages. We used spectrophotometry, electron microscopy, and optical modelling to explain the mechanisms producing bright white tail feather tips of the Eurasian woodcock Scolopax rusticola. Their diffuse reflectance was approximately 30% higher than any previously measured feather. This intense reflectance is the result of incoherent light scattering from a disordered nanostructure composed of keratin and air within the barb rami. In addition, the flattening, thickening and arrangement of those barbs create a Venetian-blind-like macrostructure that enhances the surface area for light reflection. We suggest that the woodcocks have evolved these bright white feather patches for long-range visual communication in dimly lit environments.
