1. Application of the semigroup theory to a combustion problem in a multi-layer porous medium

Abstract

This study proved that the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion-convection system is locally and globally well-posed in $\mathtt{H}^2(\mathbb{R})$. The system modeled a gasless combustion front through a multi-layer porous medium when the fuel concentration in each layer was a known function. Combustion has critical practical porous media applications, such as in in-situ combustion processes in oil reservoirs and several other areas. Earlier studies considered physical parameters (e.g., porosity, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and initial fuel concentration ) constant. Here, we consider a more realistic model where these parameters are functions of the spatial variable rather than constants. Furthermore, in previous studies, we did not consider the continuity of the solution regarding the initial data and parameters, unlike the current study. This proof uses a novel approach to combustion problems in porous media. Abstract

In this paper, the model of a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) spring resonator with end stopper for an energy harvesting application is presented. Then we characterize its nonlinear dynamical behavior by numerical simulations when some suitable parameters are varied. The system is formed by two resonators subject to external vibrational excitation and with an end stopper. We present the continuous time dynamical model of the system in the form of a switched fourth order differential equation. Harmonic vibrations are considered as the main ambient energy source for the system and its frequency response representing the RMS value of the displacement is first computed. The dynamical behavior is unveiled by computing state-space trajectories, timedomain series and FFT spectra and frequency response as the excitation amplitude is varied.

Abstract

In this paper, a diffusion-based molecular communication channel is modeled in presence of a probabilistic absorber. The probabilistic absorber is an absorber which absorbs molecules upon collision with probability q. With random walk analysis, the discrete probability function of particle location in the presence of a probabilistic absorber can be found. Then, a continuous probability function is fitted to this Markov-based results with introducing several fitting parameters to the known probability function of particle location in an unbounded environment without an absorbing barrier. With this approach, a single receptor is modeled as an M/M/1/1 queue in which q represents the complementary blocking probability and the mean service time is the mean trafficking time. Therefore, we are able to model the stochastic nature of ligand-receptor binding, which comes from the incapability of a receptor to receive all molecules in its space; and also known as receptor occupancy. The proper consideration of the absorption effect leads to the accurate calculation of the concentration at the desired site, which is definitely less than the concentration obtained when neglecting it. These findings can have a crucial role in designing drug delivery systems in which determining the optimal rate of the drug transmitting nanomachines is critical to avoid toxicity while maintaining effectiveness.

Abstract

Metasurfaces constitute effective media for manipulating and transforming impinging EM waves. Related studies have explored a series of impactful MS capabilities and applications in sectors such as wireless communications, medical imaging and energy harvesting. A key-gap in the existing body of work is that the attributes of the EM waves to-be-controlled (e.g., direction, polarity, phase) are known in advance. The present work proposes a practical solution to the EM wave sensing problem using the intelligent and networked MS counterparts-the HyperSurfaces (HSFs), without requiring dedicated field sensors. An nano-network embedded within the HSF iterates over the possible MS configurations, finding the one that fully absorbs the impinging EM wave, hence maximizing the energy distribution within the HSF. Using a distributed consensus approach, the nano-network then matches the found configuration to the most probable EM wave traits, via a static lookup table that can be created during the HSF manufacturing. Realistic simulations demonstrate the potential of the proposed scheme. Moreover, we show that the proposed workflow is the first-of-its-kind embedded EM compiler, i.e., an autonomic HSF that can translate high-level EM behavior objectives to the corresponding, low-level EM actuation commands., Comment: Publication: Proceedings of ACM NANOCOM 2019. Abstract

Wireless Network-on-Chip (WNoC) has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional interconnect fabrics at the chip scale. Since WNoCs may imply the close integration of antennas, one of the salient challenges in this scenario is the management of coupling and interferences. This paper, instead of combating coupling, aims to take advantage of close integration to create arrays within a WNoC. The proposed solution is opportunistic as it attempts to exploit the existing infrastructure to build a simple reconfigurable beamforming scheme. Full-wave simulations show that, despite the effects of lossy silicon and nearby antennas, within-package arrays achieve moderate gains and beamwidths below 90\textsuperscript{o}, a figure which is already relevant in the multiprocessor context., Comment: Presented at IEEE ISCAS 2019, Sapporo, Japan

Abstract

Wireless Network-on-Chip (WNoC) appears as a promising alternative to conventional interconnect fabrics for chip-scale communications. The WNoC paradigm has been extensively analyzed from the physical, network and architecture perspectives assuming mmWave band operation. However, there has not been a comprehensive study at this band for realistic chip packages and, thus, the characteristics of such wireless channel remain not fully understood. This work addresses this issue by accurately modeling a flip-chip package and investigating the wave propagation inside it. Through parametric studies, a locally optimal configuration for 60 GHz WNoC is obtained, showing that chip-wide attenuation below 32.6 dB could be achieved with standard processes. Finally, the applicability of the methodology is discussed for higher bands and other integrated environments such as a Software-Defined Metamaterial (SDM)., Comment: Presented at the 2018 International Symposium on Circuits & Systems (ISCAS)

Abstract

Metamaterials are artificial structures which have recently enabled the realization of novel electromagnetic components with engineered and even unnatural functionalities. Existing metamaterials are specifically designed for a single application working under preset conditions (e.g. electromagnetic cloaking for a fixed angle of incidence) and cannot be reused. Software-Defined Metamaterials (SDMs) are a much sought-after paradigm shift, exhibiting electromagnetic properties that can be reconfigured at runtime using a set of software primitives. To enable this new technology, SDMs require the integration of a network of controllers within the structure of the metamaterial, where each controller interacts locally and communicates globally to obtain the programmed behavior. The design approach for such controllers and the interconnection network, however, remains unclear due to the unique combination of constraints and requirements of the scenario. To bridge this gap, this paper aims to provide a context analysis from the computation and communication perspectives. Then, analogies are drawn between the SDM scenario and other applications both at the micro and nano scales, identifying possible candidates for the implementation of the controllers and the intra-SDM network. Finally, the main challenges of SDMs related to computing and communications are outlined.

10. Two-phase deformation of lower mantle mineral analogs

Abstract

The lower mantle is estimated to be composed of mostly bridgmanite and a smaller percentage of ferropericlase, yet very little information exists for two-phase deformation of these minerals. To better understand the rheology and active deformation mechanisms of these lower mantle minerals, especially dislocation slip and the development of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO), we deformed mineral analogs neighborite (NaMgF3, iso-structural with bridgmanite) and halite (NaCl, iso-structural with ferropericlase) together in the deformation-DIA at the Advanced Photon Source up to 51% axial shortening. Development of CPO was recorded in situ with X-ray diffraction, and information on microstructural evolution was collected using X-ray microtomography. Results show that when present in as little as 15% volume, the weak phase (NaCl) controls the deformation. Compared to single phase NaMgF3 samples, samples with just 15% volume NaCl show a reduction of CPO in NaMgF3 and weakening of the aggregate. Microtomography shows both NaMgF3 and NaCl form highly interconnected networks of grains. Polycrystal plasticity simulations were carried out to gain insight into slip activity, CPO evolution, and strain and stress partitioning between phases for different synthetic two-phase microstructures. The results suggest that ferropericlase may control deformation in the lower mantle and reduce CPO in bridgmanite, which implies a less viscous lower mantle and helps to explain why the lower mantle is fairly isotropic.

12. Compressional residual stress in Bastogne boudins revealed by synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction

Abstract

Lattice distortions in crystals can be mapped at the micron scale using synchrotron X-ray Laue microdiffraction (μXRD). From lattice distortions the shape and orientation of the elastic strain tensor can be derived and interpreted in terms of residual stress. Here we apply the new method to vein quartz from the original boudinage locality at Bastogne, Belgium. A long-standing debate surrounds the kinematics of the Bastogne boudins. The μXRD measurements reveal a shortening residual elastic strain, perpendicular to the vein wall, corroborating the model that the Bastogne boudins formed by layer-parallel shortening and not by layer-parallel extension, as is in the geological community generally inferred by the process of boudinage.

Abstract

Although the crystal structure of the high-pressure SiO2 polymorph stishovite has been studied in detail, little is known about the development of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) during deformation in stishovite. Insight into CPO and associated deformation mechanics of stishovite would provide important information for understanding subduction of quartz-bearing crustal rocks into the mantle. To study CPO development, we converted a natural sample of flint to stishovite in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell and compressed the stishovite aggregate up to 38 GPa. We collected diffraction patterns in radial geometry to examine in situ development of crystallographic preferred orientation and find that (001) poles preferentially align with the compression direction. Viscoplastic self-consistent modeling suggests the most likely slip systems at high pressure and ambient temperature are pyramidal and basal slip.

Abstract

The magnetic structure of two natural samples of goethite (α-FeOOH) with varying crystallinity was analyzed at 15 and 300 K by neutron diffraction. The well crystallized sample has the Pb′nm color space group and remained antiferromagnetic up to 300 K, with spins aligned parallel to the c axis. The purely magnetic 100 peak, identifying this color space group, was clearly resolved. The nanocrystalline sample shows a phase transition to the paramagnetic state at a temperature below 300 K. This lowering of the Néel temperature may be explained by the interaction of magnetic clusters within particles. The nuclear structure, refined with the Rietveld and pair distribution function methods, is consistent with reports in the literature.

Abstract

With in situ nanocompression experiments in a transmission electron microscope, we investigated plastic deformation in natural quartz crystals and observed both dislocation plasticity as well as mechanical twinning. Through this experimental method, we are able to provide direct evidence of Dauphiné twin nucleation and could measure the intrinsic twinning stress. The twinning phenomena appear to include a memory effect, where the same twin can reappear upon successive loading and unloading events. The data provide insight into this twin generation mechanism and can be used as a benchmark for the use of twins in quartz for paleopiezometry. Together, the observation of room-temperature dislocation plasticity and reversible twinning adds new insight into the extensive field of quartz plasticity and demonstrates the usefulness of small-scale testing techniques for mineral physics.

Abstract

Transition metals Ti, Zr, and Hf have a hexagonal close-packed structure (α) at ambient conditions, but undergo phase transformations with increasing temperature and pressure. Of particular significance is the high-pressure hexagonal ω phase which is brittle compared to the α phase. There has been a long debate about transformation mechanisms and orientation relations between the two crystal structures. Here we present the first high pressure experiments with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction texture studies on polycrystalline aggregates. We follow crystal orientation changes in Zr, confirming the original suggestion by Silcock for an α→ω martensitic transition for Ti, with (0001)(α)||(1120)(ω), and a remarkable orientation memory when ω reverts back to α.

Abstract

Analog In-Memory Computing (AIMC) is emerging as a disruptive paradigm for heterogeneous computing, potentially delivering orders of magnitude better peak performance and efficiency over traditional digital signal processing architectures on Matrix-Vector multiplication. However, to sustain this throughput in real-world applications, AIMC tiles must be supplied with data at very high bandwidth and low latency; this poses an unprecedented pressure on the on-chip communication infrastructure, which becomes the system's performance and efficiency bottleneck. In this context, the performance and plasticity of emerging on-chip wireless communication paradigms provide the required breakthrough to up-scale on-chip communication in large AIMC devices. This work presents a many-tile AIMC architecture with inter-tile wireless communication that integrates multiple heterogeneous computing clusters, embedding a mix of parallel RISC-V cores and AIMC tiles. We perform an extensive design space exploration of the proposed architecture and discuss the benefits of exploiting emerging on-chip communication technologies such as wireless transceivers in the millimeter-wave and terahertz bands. Abstract

Genetic discoveries of Alzheimer’s disease are the drivers of our understanding, and together with polygenetic risk stratification can contribute towards planning of feasible and efficient preventive and curative clinical trials. We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer’s disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease. © 2021, The Author(s).

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate Primary Care Physician's (PCP) awareness degree concerning their patient's participation in Clinical Trials (CT) analyze the communication methods used and obtain physicians personal views. Methods: Authors performed a cross-sectional observational study that included CTs approved by the Institutional Review Board at a Regional University Hospital (n=78). Among these 37 CTs were selected. PCPs involved in these trials received a questionnaire regarding aspects of the CTs in which their patients participated. The communication systems established in the study protocols were analyzed. Results: Out of 89 PCPs contacted, 82.1% were aware of their patient's participation in CTs. The information reached them through verbal communication from the participant (56.3%). PCPs also accessed it through electronic medical records (EMR) (34.0%). A majority (97.4%) considered being informed about the participation of their patients in CTs should be compulsory. Conclusion: Communication of patients' participation in CTs fundamentally takes place through a verbal interaction between patients and their doctor. Abstract

This paper deals with the assessment of the contribution of the second bending mode to the dynamic behavior of simply supported railway bridges. Traditionally the contributions of modes higher than the fundamental have been considered of little importance for the computation of the magnitudes of interest to structural engineers (vertical deflections, bending moments, etc.). Starting from the dimensionless equations of motion of a simply supported beam subjected to moving loads, the key parameters governing the dynamic behavior are identified. Then, a parametric study over realistic ranges of values of those parameters is conducted, and the influence of the second mode examined in detail. The main purpose is to decide whether the second mode should be taken into account for the determination of the maximum displacement and acceleration in high-speed bridges. In addition, the reasons that cause the contribution of the second bending mode to be relevant in some situations are highlighted, particularly with regard to the computation of the maximum acceleration. Abstract

Metamaterials are artificial structures that have recently enabled the realization of novel electromagnetic components with engineered and even unnatural functionalities. Existing metamaterials are specifically designed for a single application working under preset conditions (e.g., electromagnetic cloaking for a fixed angle of incidence) and cannot be reused. Software-defined metamaterials (SDMs) are a much sought-after paradigm shift, exhibiting electromagnetic properties that can be reconfigured at runtime using a set of software primitives. To enable this new technology, SDMs require the integration of a network of controllers within the structure of the metamaterial, where each controller interacts locally and communicates globally to obtain the programmed behavior. The design approach for such controllers and the interconnection network, however, remains unclear due to the unique combination of constraints and requirements of the scenario. To bridge this gap, this paper aims to provide a context analysis from the computation and communication perspectives. Then, analogies are drawn between the SDM scenario and other applications both at the micro and nano scales, identifying possible candidates for the implementation of the controllers and the intra-SDM network. Finally, the main challenges of SDMs related to computing and communications are outlined. © 2017 IEEE. 5 6225 6235

Abstract

Introduction: Large variability among Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases might impact genetic discoveries and complicate dissection of underlying biological pathways. Methods: Genome Research at Fundacio ACE (GR@ACE) is a genome-wide study of dementia and its clinical endophenotypes, defined based on AD's clinical certainty and vascular burden. We assessed the impact of known AD loci across endophenotypes to generate loci categories. We incorporated gene coexpression data and conducted pathway analysis per category. Finally, to evaluate the effect of heterogeneity in genetic studies, GR@ACE series were meta-analyzed with additional genome-wide association study data sets. Results: We classified known AD loci into three categories, which might reflect the disease clinical heterogeneity. Vascular processes were only detected as a causal mechanism in probable AD. The meta-analysis strategy revealed the ANKRD31-rs4704171 and NDUFAF6-rs10098778 and confirmed SCIMP-rs7225151 and CD33-rs3865444. Discussion: The regulation of vasculature is a prominent causal component of probable AD. Abstract

An ancestral inversion of 900 kb on chromosome 17q21, which includes the microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene, defines two haplotype clades in Caucasians (H1 and H2). The H1 haplotype has been linked inconsistently with AD. In a previous study, we showed that an SNP tagging this haplotype (rs1800547) was associated with AD risk in a large population from the Dementia Genetics Spanish Consortium (DEGESCO) including 4435 cases and 6147 controls. The association was mainly driven by individuals that were non-carriers of the APOE epsilon 4 allele. Our aim was to replicate our previous findings in an independent sample of 4124 AD cases and 3290 controls from Spain (GR@ACE project) and to analyze the effect of the H1 sub-haplotype structure on the risk of AD. The H1 haplotype was associated with AD risk (OR = 1.12; p = 0.0025). Stratification analysis showed that this association was mainly driven by the APOE epsilon 4 non-carriers (OR = 1.15; p = 0.0022). Pooled analysis of both Spanish datasets (n = 17,996) showed that the highest AD risk related to the MAPT H1/H2 haplotype was in those individuals that were the oldest [third tertile (>77 years)] and did not carry APOE epsilon 4 allele (p = 0.001). We did not find a significant association between H1 sub-haplotypes and AD. H1c was nominally associated but lost statistical significance after adjusting by population sub-structure. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that genetic variants linked to the MAPT H1/H2 are tracking a genuine risk allele for AD. The fact that this association is stronger in APOE epsilon 4 non-carriers partially explains previous controversial results and might be related to a slower alternative causal pathway less dependent on brain amyloid load.
