Search

We use the photometric metallicities provided by the panoramic Pristine survey to study the veracity and derive the metallicities of the numerous stellar streams found by the application of the STREAMFINDER algorithm to the Gaia EDR3 data. All 26 streams present in Pristine show a clear metallicity distribution function, which provides an independent check of the reality of these structures, supporting the reliability of STREAMFINDER in finding streams and the power of Pristine to measure precise metallicities. We further present 6 candidate structures with coherent phase-space and metallicity signals that are very likely streams. The majority of studied streams are very metal-poor (14 structures with [Fe/H], 25 pages, 29 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. The formation of "stellar halos" in dwarf galaxies have been discussed in terms of early mergers or Galactic tides, although fluctuations in the gravitational potential due to stellar feedback is also a possible candidate mechanism. A Bayesian algorithm is used to find new candidate members in the extreme outskirts of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy. Precise metallicities and radial velocities for two distant stars are measured from their spectra taken with the Gemini South GMOS spectrograph. The radial velocity, proper motion and metallicity of these targets are consistent with Sculptor membership. As a result, the known boundary of the Sculptor dwarf extends now out to an elliptical distance of $\sim10$ half-light radii, which corresponds to a projected physical distance of $\sim3$ kpc. As reported in earlier work, the overall distribution of radial velocities and metallicities indicate the presence of a more spatially and kinematically dispersed metal-poor population that surrounds the more concentrated and colder metal-rich stars. Sculptor's density profile shows a "kink" in its logarithmic slope at a projected distance of $\sim25$ arcmin (620 pc), which we interpret as evidence that Galactic tides have helped to populate the distant outskirts of the dwarf. We present a new spectroscopic study of the faint Milky Way satellite Sagittarius II. Using multiobject spectroscopy from the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph, we supplement the data set of Longeard et al. with 47 newly observed stars, 19 of which are identified as members of the satellite. These additional member stars are used to put tighter constraints on the dynamics and the metallicity properties of the system. We find a low velocity dispersion of $\sigma _\mathrm{v}^\mathrm{SgrII} = 1.7 \pm 0.5$ km s−1, in agreement with the dispersion of Milky Way globular clusters of similar luminosity. We confirm the very metal-poor nature of the satellite ([Fe/H]$_\mathrm{spectro}^\mathrm{SgrII} = -2.23 \pm 0.07$) and find that the metallicity dispersion of Sgr II is not resolved, reaching only 0.20 at the 95 per cent confidence limit. No star with a metallicity below −2.5 is confidently detected. Therefore, despite the unusually large size of the system (r$_h = 35.5 ^{+1.4}_{-1.2}$ pc), we conclude that Sgr II is an old and metal-poor globular cluster of the Milky Way.

We measure systemic proper motions for distant dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and investigate if these isolated galaxies have ever had an interaction with the Milky Way or M31. We cross-match photometry of isolated, star forming, dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, taken as part of the {\it Solo} survey, with astrometric measurements from Gaia Data Release 2. We find that NGC 6822, Leo A, IC 1613 and WLM have sufficient supergiants with reliable astrometry to derive proper motions. An additional three galaxies (Leo T, Eridanus 2 and Phoenix) are close enough that their proper motions have already been derived using red giant branch stars. Systematic errors in Gaia DR2 are significant for NGC 6822, IC 1613 and WLM. We explore the orbits for these galaxies, and conclude that Phoenix, Leo A and WLM are unlikely to have interacted with the Milky Way or M31, unless these large galaxies are very massive ($\gtrsim 1.6 \times 10^{12}\,M_\odot$). We rule out a past interaction of NGC 6822 with M31 at $\sim 99.99\%$ confidence, and find there is a $, 15 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Corrected Figure 4 and 5

As fainter and less massive galaxies, however, dwarf galaxies are particularly susceptible to environmental mechanisms that can more easily perturb these systems. Importantly, the presence of nearby large galaxies is expected to have a profound effect on dwarf galaxies. Gravitational (especially tidally induced) effects from the large galaxy can cause mass to be lost from the dwarf, and the passage of the dwarf through the gaseous medium surrounding the large galaxy can additionally cause the dwarf to lose its own gas through a process called ram-pressure stripping. Such effects are considered to be the main sources of difference between “satellite” and “field” dwarf galaxy populations. Here, we report on new observations of the gaseous content of Wolf–Lundmark–Melotte (WLM), an archetype of isolated, gas-rich field dwarf galaxies in the Local Universe, which presents a much more complex situation. Previous studies of its gaseous disk suggest it has perturbed kinematics; here, we identify four trailing, extended gas clouds lying in the direction opposite to WLM’s spatial motion, as well as a spatial offset between the WLM gas and stars. Overall, the morphology and kinematics of this gas show that WLM is undergoing ram-pressure stripping, despite being 930 and 830 kpc from the Milky Way and M 31, respectively. This finding indicates the presence of an intergalactic, gaseous reservoir far from large galaxies whose evolutionary role in galaxies, both large and small, may not be fully appreciated. © Y. We obtain a magnitude-limited sample of Andromeda (M 31) disc PNe with chemical abundance estimated through the direct detection of the [OIII] 4363 $\mathring{\mathrm A}$ line. This leads to $205$ and $200$ PNe with oxygen and argon abundances respectively. We find that high- and low-extinction M 31 disc PNe have statistically distinct argon and oxygen abundance distributions. In the radial range $2-30$ kpc, the older low-extinction disc PNe are metal-poorer on average with a slightly positive radial oxygen abundance gradient ($0.006 \pm 0.003$ dex/kpc) and slightly negative for argon ($-0.005 \pm 0.003$ dex/kpc), while the younger high-extinction disc PNe are metal-richer on average with steeper radial abundance gradients for both oxygen ($-0.013 \pm 0.006$ dex/kpc) and argon ($-0.018 \pm 0.006$ dex/kpc), similar to the gradients computed for the M 31 HII regions. The M 31 disc abundance gradients are consistent with values computed from major merger simulations, with the majority of the low-extinction PNe being the older pre-merger disc stars in the thicker disc, and the majority of the high-extinction PNe being younger stars in the thin disc, formed during and after the merger event. The chemical abundance of the M 31 thicker disc has been radially homogenized because of the major merger. Accounting for disc scale-lengths, the positive radial oxygen abundance gradient of the M 31 thicker disc is in sharp contrast to the negative one of the MW thick disc. Stellar ejecta gradually enrich the gas out of which subsequent stars form, making the least chemically enriched stellar systems direct fossils of structures formed in the early universe. Although a few hundred stars with metal content below one thousandth of the solar iron content are known in the Galaxy, none of them inhabit globular clusters, some of the oldest known stellar structures. These show metal content of at least ~0.2 percent of the solar metallicity ([Fe/H] > -2.7). This metallicity floor appears universal and it has been proposed that proto-galaxies that merge into the galaxies we observe today were simply not massive enough to form clusters that survived to the present day. Here, we report the discovery of a stellar stream, C-19, whose metallicity is less than 0.05 per cent the solar metallicity ([Fe/H]=-3.38 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.20 (syst.)). The low metallicity dispersion and the chemical abundances of the C-19 stars show that this stream is the tidal remnant of the most metal-poor globular cluster ever discovered, and significantly below the purported metallicity floor: clusters with significantly lower metallicities than observed today existed in the past and contributed their stars to the Milky Way halo., 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. We present a search for disturbed, candidate ram pressure stripping galaxies across more than 50 spectroscopically selected SDSS groups and clusters. Forty-eight ram pressure candidates are visually identified in these systems using high quality UNIONS imaging from the Canada-France Hawaii Telescope, covering ~6200 and ~2800 square degrees in the u- and r-bands respectively. Ram pressure candidates are found in groups and clusters spanning a wide range in halo mass and include ~30 ram pressure candidates in the group regime ($M_h < 10^{14}$). The observed frequency of ram pressure candidates shows substantial scatter with group/cluster mass, but on average is larger in clusters ($M_h > 10^{14}\,M_\odot$) than groups ($M_h < 10^{14}\,M_\odot$) by a factor of ~2. We find that ram pressure candidates are most commonly low-mass galaxies and have enhanced star formation rates relative to star-forming field galaxies. The enhancement in star formation is largely independent of galaxy mass and strongest for galaxies in clusters. As a result of the large survey footprint and excellent image quality from UNIONS, we are able to identify disturbed galaxies, potentially affected by ram pressure stripping, across a wide range of host environment., 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 appendix, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We examine the spatial clustering of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the u-band of the Canada–France Imaging Survey (CFIS, a component of the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey, or UNIONS). All major groupings of stars are associated with previously known satellites, and among these is NGC 5466, a distant (16 kpc) globular cluster. NGC 5466 reportedly possesses a long stellar stream, although no individual members of the stream have previously been identified. Using both BHBs and more numerous red giant branch stars cross-matched to Gaia Data Release 2, we identify extended tidal tails from NGC 5466 that are both spatially and kinematically coherent. Interestingly, we find that this stream does not follow the same path as the previous detection at large distances from the cluster. We trace the stream across 31° of sky and show that it exhibits a very strong distance gradient in the range 10

We present an analysis of the proper motion of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), based on the Early Third Data Release of the Gaia mission. We use the Gaia photometry to select young blue main sequence stars, and apply several quality cuts to obtain clean samples of these tracers. After correcting the proper motion measurements for the internal rotation of the M31 disk motion, we derive an apparent motion of 52.5 +/- 5.8 muas/yr with respect to the Gaia reference frame, or 61.9 +/- 9.7 muas/yr after applying a zero-point correction determined from quasars within 20 degrees from M31 and a correction from systemic biases. Accounting for the Solar reflex motion we deduce a relative velocity between Andromeda and the Milky way (in a non-rotating frame at the current location of the Sun) of 42.2 +/- 39.3 km/s along right ascension (40.0 +/- 39.3 km/s along galactic longitude) and -59.4 +/- 30.3 km/s along declination (-60.9 +/- 30.3 km/s along galactic latitude), with a total transverse velocity of V_trans = 82.4 +/- 31.2 km/s. These values are consistent with (but more accurate than) earlier Hubble Space Telescope measurements that predict a future merger between the two galaxies. We also note a surprisingly large difference in the derived proper motion between the blue stars in M31 and samples of red stars that appear to lie in that galaxy. We determine the detection limits of the search for dwarf galaxies in the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) using the algorithm developed by the PAndAS team. The recovery fractions of artificial dwarf galaxies are, as expected, a strong function of physical size and luminosity and, to a lesser extent, distance. We show that these recovery fractions vary strongly with location in the surveyed area because of varying levels of contamination from both the Milky Way foreground stars and the stellar halo of Andromeda. We therefore provide recovery fractions that are a function of size, luminosity, and location within the survey on a scale of 1 square degree. Overall, the effective surface brightness for a 50-percent detection rate range between 28 and 30 mag per square arcsecond. This is in line with expectations for a search that relies on photometric data that are as deep as the PAndAS survey. The derived detection limits are an essential ingredient on the path to constraining the global properties of Andromeda's system of satellite dwarf galaxies and, more broadly, to provide constraints on dwarf galaxy formation and evolution in a cosmological context., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted in ApJ

The early Universe presented a star formation environment that was almost devoid of heavy elements. The lowest metallicity stars thus provide a unique window into the earliest Galactic stages, but are exceedingly rare and difficult to find. Here we present the discovery of an ultra-metal-poor star, Pristine_221.8781+9.7844, using narrow-band Ca H&K photometry from the Pristine survey. Follow-up medium and high-resolution spectroscopy confirms the ultra-metal-poor nature of Pristine_221.8781+9.7844 ([Fe/H] = -4.66 +/- 0.13 in 1D LTE) with an enhancement of 0.3-0.4 dex in alpha-elements relative to Fe, and an unusually low carbon abundance. We derive an upper limit of A(C) = 5.6, well below typical A(C) values for such ultra metal-poor stars. This makes Pristine_221.8781+9.7844 one of the most metal-poor stars; in fact, it is very similar to the most metal-poor star known (SDSS J102915+172927). The existence of a class of ultra metal-poor stars with low(er) carbon abundances suggest that there must have been several formation channels in the early Universe through which long-lived, low-mass stars were formed., Re-submitted to MNRAS after minor revisions

We present a direct comparison of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) observations of the stellar halo of M31 with the stellar halos of 6 galaxies from the Auriga simulations. We process the simulated halos through the Auriga2PAndAS pipeline and create PAndAS-like mocks that fold in all observational limitations of the survey data (foreground contamination from the Milky Way stars, incompleteness of the stellar catalogues, photometric uncertainties, etc). This allows us to study the survey data and the mocks in the same way and generate directly comparable density maps and radial density profiles. We show that the simulations are overall compatible with the observations. Nevertheless, some systematic differences exist, such as a preponderance for metal-rich stars in the mocks. While these differences could suggest that M31 had a different accretion history or has a different mass compared to the simulated systems, it is more likely a consequence of an under-quenching of the star formation history of galaxies, related to the resolution of the Auriga simulations. The direct comparison enabled by our approach offers avenues to improve our understanding of galaxy formation as they can help pinpoint the observable differences between observations and simulations. Ideally, this approach will be further developed through an application to other stellar halo simulations. We present optical spectroscopy for 18 halo white dwarfs identified using photometry from the Canada-France Imaging Survey and Pan-STARRS1 DR1 3$\pi$ survey combined with astrometry from Gaia DR2. The sample contains 13 DA, 1 DZ, 2 DC, and two potentially exotic types of white dwarf. We fit both the spectrum and the spectral energy distribution in order to obtain the temperature and surface gravity, which we then convert into a mass, and then an age, using stellar isochrones and the initial-to-final mass relation. We find a large spread in ages that is not consistent with expected formation scenarios for the Galactic halo. We find a mean age of 9.03$^{+2.13}_{-2.03}$ Gyr and a dispersion of 4.21$^{+2.33}_{-1.58}$ Gyr for the inner halo using a maximum likelihood method. This result suggests an extended star formation history within the local halo population., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

The Andromeda (M31) galaxy displays several substructures in its inner halo whose origin as remnants of accreted satellites or perturbations of the pre-existing disc are encoded in the properties of their stellar populations (SPs), leaving traces on their deep [OIII] 5007 \AA planetary nebulae luminosity functions (PNLFs). By characterizing the morphology of the PNLFs, we constrain their origin. From our 54 sq. deg. deep narrow-band [OIII] survey of M31, we identify planetary nebulae (PNe) in the M31 disc and six major inner-halo substructures - the Giant Stream, North East Shelf, G1-Clump, Northern Clump, Western Shelf and Stream-D. We measure PNLF parameters from cumulative fits and statistically compare the PNLFs in each substructure and the disc. We link the PNLF parameters and those for the Large Magellanic Cloud to published metallicities and age measurements for their parent SPs. The absolute magnitudes of the PNLF bright cut-off ($M^{*}$) for these sub-populations span a significant magnitude range, despite having similar distance and line-of-sight extinction. $M^{*}$ for the Giant Stream, W-shelf and Stream-D PNLFs are fainter than those predicted by PN evolution models for the metallicity of the parent SPs. The faint-end slope of the PNLF increases linearly with decreasing fraction of stellar mass younger than 5 Gyr across the M31 regions and the LMC. From their PNLFs, the Giant Stream and NE-shelf are consistent with being stellar debris from an infalling satellite, while the G1 Clump appears to be linked with the pre-merger disc. The SPs of the substructures are consistent with those predicted by simulations of a single massive merger event that took place 2--3 Gyr ago in M31. Stream-D has an unrelated, distinct, origin. The instrument group of the Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics has been subcontracted by Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO) at Macquarie University to design and build the bench spectrograph for the Gemini High-Resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) instrument. The GHOST instrument is being developed for the Gemini telescope and is a collaboration between AAO, the Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics (HAA) in Canada and the Australian National University (ANU). We present an analysis of the structure, kinematics and orbit of a newly found stellar stream emanating from the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). This stream was discovered in an improved matched-filter map of the outer Galaxy, based on a "color-color-magnitude" diagram, created using photometry from the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) and the Pan-STARRS 1 3$\pi$ survey (PS1). We find the stream to have a length of 17{\deg} (2.5 kpc at the distance of M92), a width dispersion of $0.29${\deg}(42 pc) and a stellar mass of $[3.17 \pm{0.89}] \times 10^{4} $ M$_\odot$ ($10 \%$ of the stellar mass of the current main body of M92). We examine the kinematics of main sequence, red giant and blue horizontal branch stars belonging to the stream and that have proper motion measurements from the second data release of Gaia. N-body simulations suggest that the stream was likely formed very recently (during the last $\sim 500$ Myr) forcing us to question the orbital origin of this ancient, metal-poor globular cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We present the star formation history (SFH) of the isolated (D~970 kpc) Local Group dwarf galaxy WLM measured from color-magnitude diagrams constructed from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Our observations include a central (0.5 $r_h$) and outer field (0.7 $ r_h$) that reach below the oldest main sequence turnoff. WLM has no early dominant episode of star formation: 20% of its stellar mass formed by ~12.5 Gyr ago (z~5). It also has an SFR that rises to the present with 50% of the stellar mass within the most recent 5 Gyr (z, 13 pages, 13 Figures, 4 Tables. As the remnants of stars with initial masses ≲8 M⊙, white dwarfs contain valuable information on the formation histories of stellar populations. In this paper, we use deep, high-quality, u-band photometry from the Canada–France Imaging Survey, griz photometry from Pan-STARRS1, as well as proper motions from Gaia DR2, to select 25,156 white dwarf candidates over ∼4500 deg2 using a reduced proper motion diagram. We develop a new white dwarf population synthesis code that returns mock observations of the Galactic field white dwarf population for a given star formation history, while simultaneously taking into account the geometry of the Milky Way (MW), survey parameters, and selection effects. We use this model to derive the star formation histories of the thin disk, thick disk, and stellar halo. Our results show that the MW disk began forming stars (11.3 ± 0.5) Gyr ago, with a peak rate of (8.8 ± 1.4) M⊙ yr −1 at (9.8 ± 0.4) Gyr, before a slow decline to a constant rate until the present day—consistent with recent results suggesting a merging event with a satellite galaxy. Studying the residuals between the data and best-fit model shows evidence for a slight increase in star formation over the past 3 Gyr. We fit the local fraction of helium-atmosphere white dwarfs to be (21 ± 3)%. Incorporating this methodology with data from future wide-field surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, Euclid, The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and ultraviolet Research, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope should provide an unprecedented view into the formation of the MW at its earliest epoch through its white dwarfs.

The Solo (Solitary local) Dwarf Galaxy Survey is a volume limited sample of all nearby (< 3 Mpc) and isolated (> 300 kpc from the Milky Way or M31) dwarfs, with wide-field g and i imaging. This survey uses resolved stellar populations to parameterize these low mass systems. Comparison to the well studied satellite dwarfs characterizes the evolutionary impact of a large galaxy in close proximity. The deep, wide field nature of this survey also lends itself to searching for nearby substructures, both globular clusters and possible faint satellites.Current work is focused on the 16 closest Solo dwarfs, all within the virial radius (approximately 1 Mpc) of the Local Group. This subset has been characterized using consistent methods, despite their diversity in stellar mass and apparent size. The analysis highlights the extended stellar structure and morphology. We will examine trends with star formation history, and separation from a large host. This first subset emphasizes the survey’s unique challenges and advantages.The Solo Survey provides detailed look at the extended structure of dwarfs and characterizes the evolution of galaxies in the faint limit.

Stars with masses between ∼0.7 and 8 M⊙ end their lives as Planetary Nebulae (PNe). With the MegaCam at CFHT, we have carried out a survey of the central 16 sq. degrees of Andromeda (M31) reaching the outer disk and halo, using a narrow-band [OIII]5007 and a broad-band g filter. This survey extends previous PN samples both in uniform area coverage and depth. We identify ∼4000 PNe in M31, of which ∼3000 are new discoveries. We detect PNe down to ∼6 mag below the bright cut-off of the PN luminosity function (PNLF), ∼2 mag deeper than in previous works. We detect a steep rise in the number of PNe at ∼4.5 mag fainter than the bright cut-off. It persists as we go radially outwards and is steeper than that seen in the Magellanic clouds. We explore possible reasons for this rise, which give insights into the stellar population of M31.

We present the star formation histories (SFHs) of 20 faint M31 satellites ($-12 \lesssim M_V \lesssim -6$) that were measured by modeling sub-horizontal branch (HB) depth color-magnitude diagrams constructed from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Reinforcing previous results, we find that virtually all galaxies quenched between 3 and 9 Gyr ago, independent of luminosity, with a notable concentration $3-6$ Gyr ago. This is in contrast to the Milky Way (MW) satellites, which are generally either faint with ancient quenching times or luminous with recent ($, 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Canadian astronomers and facilities have had a significant impact in wide-field astronomy. With community planning exercises underway this looks set to continue, with new capabilities and international collaborations in the near future.

The Pristine survey is a narrow-band, photometric survey focused around the wavelength region of the Ca II H & K absorption lines, designed to efficiently search for extremely metal-poor stars. In this work, we use the first results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up to refine the selection criteria for finding extremely metal-poor stars ($\textrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -3.0$) in the Pristine survey. We consider methods by which stars can be selected from available broad-band and infrared photometry plus the additional Pristine narrow-band photometry. The spectroscopic sample presented in this paper consists of 205 stars in the magnitude range $14 < V < 18$. Applying the photometric selection criteria cuts the sample down to 149 stars, and from these we report a success rate of 70% for finding stars with $\textrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -2.5$ and 22% for finding stars with $\textrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -3.0$. These statistics compare favourably with other surveys that search for extremely metal-poor stars, namely an improvement by a factor of $\sim 4-5$ for recovering stars with $\textrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -3.0$. We present new horizontal branch (HB) distance measurements to 17 of the faintest known M31 satellites ($-6 \lesssim M_{V} \lesssim -13$) based on deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. The color-magnitude diagrams extend $\sim$1-2 magnitudes below the HB, which provides for well-defined HBs, even for faint galaxies in which the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is sparsely populated. We determine distances across the sample to an average precision of 4% ($\sim 30$~kpc at $800$~kpc). We find that the majority of these galaxies are in good agreement, though slightly farther (0.1-0.2 mag) when compared to recent ground-based TRGB distances. Two galaxies (And~IX and And~XVII) have discrepant HST and ground-based distances by $\sim 0.3$ mag ($\sim 150$~kpc), which may be due to contamination from Milky Way foreground stars and/or M31 halo stars in sparsely populated TRGB regions. We use the new distances to update the luminosities and structural parameters for these 17 M31 satellites. The new distances do not substantially change the spatial configuration of the M31 satellite system. We present a kinematic and spectroscopic analysis of 38 red giant branch stars, in 7 fields, spanning the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda XXVII and the upper segment of the North West Stream. Both features are located in the outer halo of the Andromeda galaxy at a projected radius of 50-80 kpc, with the stream extending for $\sim$3$^{\circ}$ on the sky. Our data is obtained as part of the PAndAS survey and enables us to confirm that Andromeda XXVII's heliocentric distance is 827 $\pm$ 47 kpc and spectroscopic metallicity is -2.1$^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$. We also re-derive Andromeda XXVII's kinematic properties, measuring a systemic velocity = -526.1$^{+10.0}_{-11.0}${\kms} and a velocity dispersion that we find to be non-Gaussian but for which we derive a formal value of 27.0$^{+2.2}_{-3.9}${\kms}. In the upper segment of the North West Stream we measure mean values for the metallicity = -1.8$\pm$0.4, systemic velocity = -519.4 $\pm$4.0{\kms} and velocity dispersion = 10.0$\pm$4.0{\kms}. We also detect a velocity gradient of 1.7$\pm$0.3 {\kms} kpc$^{-1}$ on an infall trajectory towards M31. With a similar gradient, acting in the same direction, in the lower segment we suggest that the North West Stream is not a single structure. As the properties of the upper segment of the North West Stream and Andromeda XXVII are consistent within ~90\% confidence limits, it is likely that the two are related and plausible that Andromeda XXVII is the progenitor of this stream., 15 pages, 10 figures

Large galaxies grow through the accumulation of dwarf galaxies

We present the kinematics of Blue Straggler (BS) stars identified in the Canada-France-Imaging-Survey (CFIS), covering 4000 deg$^2$ on the sky in the $u$-band. The BS sample, characterised through CFIS and Pan-STARRS photometry, has been kinematically decomposed into putative halo and disc populations after cross-matching with Gaia astrometry and SDSS/SEGUE/LAMOST spectroscopy. This decomposition clearly reveals the strong flaring of the outer Milky Way disc. In particular, we show that we can detect this flaring up to a vertical height of $|Z| \simeq 8$ kpc at a Galactocentric distance of $R\sim $27 kpc. While some small level of flaring is expected for extended discs built up by radial migration, we demonstrate that this observed very strong flaring of the Milky Way disc is more likely consistent with it being dynamically heated by the repeated passage of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy through the midplane., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

We present new FLAMES$+$GIRAFFE spectroscopy of 36 member stars in the isolated Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Tucana. We measure a systemic velocity for the system of $v_{\mathrm{Tuc}}=216.7_{-2.8}^{+2.9}$kms$^{-1}$, and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_{\mathrm{v,Tuc}}=14.4_{-2.3}^{+2.8}$kms$^{-1}$. We also detect a rotation gradient of $\frac{dv_{r}}{d\chi}=7.6^{+4.2}_{-4.3}$ kms$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, which reduces the systemic velocity to $v_{\mathrm{Tuc}}=215.2_{-2.7}^{+2.8}$ kms$^{-1}$ and the velocity dispersion to $\sigma_{v,\mathrm{Tuc}}=13.3_{-2.3}^{+2.7}$ kms$^{-1}$. We perform Jeans modelling of the density profile of Tucana using the line--of--sight velocities of the member stars. We find that it favours a high central density consistent with `pristine' subhalos in $\Lambda$CDM, and a massive dark matter halo ($\sim$$10^{10}$\,M$_\odot$) consistent with expectations from abundance matching. Tucana appears to be significantly more centrally dense than other isolated Local Group dwarfs, making it an ideal laboratory for testing dark matter models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 13 figures. The Andromeda (M31) galaxy subtends nearly 100 sq. deg. on the sky, with severe contamination from the Milky Way halo stars whose surface density displays a steep gradient across the entire M31 field-of-view. Planetary Nebulae (PNe) are a population of stars firmly associated with M31, that are excellent tracers of light, chemistry and motion in galaxies. We present a 16 sq. deg. survey of the disk and inner halo of M31 with MegaCam@CFHT to identify PNe, characterize their luminosity-specific PN number and luminosity function (PNLF). PNe were identified based on their bright OIII 5007 $\unicode{x212B}$ emission and absence of a continuum. Subsamples of the faint PNe were independently confirmed by matching with resolved Hubble Space Telescope sources from the PHAT survey and spectroscopic follow-up observations with HectoSpec@MMT. The current survey reaches 2 mag fainter than the previous most-sensitive survey. We identify 4289 PNe, of which only 1099 were previously known. By comparing the PN number density with the surface brightness profile of M31 out to ~30 kpc along the minor-axis, we find that the stellar population in the inner halo has a 7 times larger luminosity-specific PN number value than that of the disk. It indicates that the stellar population at deprojected minor-axis radii larger than ~10 kpc is different from that in the M31 disk. We measure the PNLF and find a bright cut-off and a slope consistent with the previous determination by Ciardullo et al. (1989). Interestingly, it shows a significant rise at the faint end, present in all radial bins covered by the survey, much steeper than that observed for the Magellanic clouds and Milky Way bulge. M31 shows two major episodes of star formation and the rise in the faint end of the PNLF is possibly associated with the older stellar population. Context. Dwarf galaxies found in isolation in the Local Group (LG) are unlikely to have interacted with the large LG spirals, and therefore environmental effects such as tidal and ram-pressure stripping should not be the main drivers of their evolution. Aims. We provide insight into the internal mechanisms shaping LG dwarf galaxies by increasing our knowledge of the internal properties of isolated systems. Here we focus on the evolved stellar component of the Aquarius dwarf galaxy, whose kinematic and metallicity properties have only recently started to be explored. Methods. Spectroscopic data in the region of the near-infrared Ca II triplet lines has been obtained with FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope for 53 red giant branch (RGB) stars. These data are used to derive line-of-sight (l.o.s.) velocities and [Fe/H] of the individual RGB stars. Results. We derive a systemic velocity of 142.2(-1.8)(+1.8) kms(-1) in agreement with previous determinations from both the HI gas and stars. The internal kinematics of Aquarius appears to be best modelled by a combination of random motions (l.o.s. velocity dispersion of 10.3(-1.3)(+1.6)kms(-1)) and linear rotation (with a gradient -5.0(-1.9)(+1.6) km s(-1) arcmin(-1)) along a PA = 139(-27)(+17) deg, broadly consistent with the optical projected major axis. This rotation signal is significantly misaligned or even counter-rotating to that derived from the HI gas. We also find the tentative presence of a mild negative metallicity gradient and indications that the metal-rich stars have a colder velocity dispersion than the metal-poor ones. Conclusions. This work represents a significant improvement with respect to previous measurements of the RGB stars of Aquarius as it doubles the number of member stars already studied in the literature. We speculate that the misaligned rotation between the HI gas and evolved stellar component might have been the result of recent accretion of HI gas, or re-accretion after gas-loss due to internal stellar feedback.© ESO 2020, The authors thank the referee for a thorough report that has helped improving the manuscript. The age-velocity dispersion relation is an important tool to understand the evolution of the disc of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) in comparison with the Milky Way. We use Planetary Nebulae (PNe) to obtain the age-velocity dispersion relation in different radial bins of the M31 disc. We separate the observed PNe sample based on their extinction values into two distinct age populations. The observed velocities of our high- and low-extinction PNe, which correspond to higher and lower mass progenitors respectively, are fitted in de-projected elliptical bins to obtain their rotational velocities, $V_{\phi}$, and corresponding dispersions, $\rm\sigma_{\phi}$. We assign ages to the two PNe populations by comparing central-star properties of an archival sub-sample of PNe, having models fitted to their observed spectral features, to stellar evolution tracks. For the high- and low-extinction PNe, we find ages of $\sim2.5$ Gyr and $\sim4.5$ Gyr respectively, with distinct kinematics beyond a deprojected radius R$\rm_{GC}= 14$ kpc. At R$\rm_{GC}$=17--20 kpc, which is the equivalent distance in disc scale lengths of the Sun in the Milky Way disc, we obtain $\rm\sigma_{\phi,~2.5~Gyr}= 61\pm 14$ km s$^{-1}$ and $\rm\sigma_{\phi,~4.5~Gyr}= 101\pm 13$ km s$^{-1}$. The age-velocity dispersion relation for the M31 disc is obtained in two radial bins, R$\rm_{GC}$=14--17 and 17--20 kpc. The high- and low-extinction PNe are associated with the young thin and old thicker disc of M31 respectively, whose velocity dispersion values increase with age. These values are almost twice and thrice that of the Milky Way disc stellar population of corresponding ages. From comparison with simulations of merging galaxies, we find that the age-velocity dispersion relation in the M31 disc measured using PNe is indicative of a single major merger that occurred 2.5 -- 4.5 Gyr ago with an estimated merger mass ratio $\approx$ 1:5., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The question of whether galaxy mergers are linked to the triggering of active galactic nuclei (AGN) continues to be a topic of considerable debate. The issue can be broken down into two distinct questions: 1) Can galaxy mergers trigger AGN? 2) Are galaxy mergers the dominant AGN triggering mechanism? A complete picture of the AGN-merger connection requires that both of these questions are addressed with the same dataset. In previous work, we have shown that galaxy mergers selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) show an excess of both optically-selected, and mid-IR colour-selected AGN, demonstrating that the answer to the first of the above questions is affirmative. Here, we use the same optical and mid-IR AGN selection to address the second question, by quantifying the frequency of morphological disturbances in low surface brightness r-band images from the Canada France Imaging Survey (CFIS). Only ~30 per cent of optical AGN host galaxies are morphologically disturbed, indicating that recent interactions are not the dominant trigger. However, almost 60 per cent of mid-IR AGN hosts show signs of visual disturbance, indicating that interactions play a more significant role in nuclear feeding. Both mid-IR and optically selected AGN have interacting fractions that are a factor of two greater than a mass and redshift matched non-AGN control sample, an excess that increases with both AGN luminosity and host galaxy stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We utilise the final catalogue from the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey to investigate the links between the globular cluster system and field halo in M31 at projected radii $R_p=25-150$ kpc. The stellar halos of large galaxies represent a vital probe of the processes of galaxy evolution. They are the remnants of the initial bouts of star formation during the collapse of the proto-galactic cloud, coupled with imprint of ancient and on-going accretion events. Previously, we have reported the tentative detection of a possible, faint, extended stellar halo in the Local Group spiral, the Triangulum Galaxy (M33). However, the presence of substructure surrounding M33 made interpretation of this feature difficult. Here, we employ the final data set from the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS), combined with an improved calibration and a newly derived contamination model for the region to revisit this claim. With an array of new fitting algorithms, fully accounting for contamination and the substantial substructure beyond the prominent stellar disk in M33, we reanalyse the surrounds to separate the signal of the stellar halo and the outer halo substructure. Using more robust search algorithms, we do not detect a large scale smooth stellar halo and place a limit on the maximum surface brightness of such a feature of $��_V$ = 35.5 mags per square arcsec, or a total halo luminosity of $L < 10^6L_{\odot}$., 17 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

NGC147, NGC185 and CassiopeiaII (CassII) have similar positions in the sky, distances and measured line of sight velocities. This proximity in phase space suggests that these three satellites of M31 form a subgroup within the Local Group. Nevertheless, the differences in their star formation history and interstellar medium, and the recent discovery of a stellar stream in NGC~147, combined with the lack of tidal features in the other two satellites, are all indications of complex and diverse interactions between M31 and these three satellites. We use a genetic algorithm to explore the different orbits that these satellites can have and select six sets of orbits that could best explain the observational features of the NGC147, NGC185 and CassII satellites. The parameters of these orbits are then used as a starting point for N-body simulations. We present models for which NGC147, NGC185 and CassII are a bound group for a total time of at least one Gyr but still undergo different interactions with M31 and as a result NGC147 has a clear stellar stream whereas the other two satellites have no significant tidal features. This result shows that it is possible to find solutions that reproduce the contrasting properties of the satellites and for which NGC147-NGC185-CassII have been gravitationally bound., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS. 12 pages, 9 figures

A new derivation of systemic proper motions of Milky Way satellites is presented, and applied to 59 confirmed or candidate dwarf galaxy satellites using Gaia Data Release 2. This constitutes all known Milky Way dwarf galaxies (and likely candidates) as of May 2020 except the Magellanic Clouds, the Canis Major and Hydra 1 stellar overdensities, and the tidally disrupting Bootes III and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies. We derive systemic proper motions for the first time for Indus 1, DES J0225+0304, Cetus 2, Pictor 2 and Leo T, but note that the latter three rely on photometry that is of poorer quality than for the rest of the sample. We cannot resolve a signal for Bootes 4, Cetus 3, Indus 2, Pegasus 3, or Virgo 1. Our method is inspired by the maximum likelihood approach of Pace & Li (2019) and examines simultaneously the spatial, color-magnitude, and proper motion distribution of sources. Systemic proper motions are derived without the need to identify confirmed radial velocity members, although the proper motions of these stars, where available, are incorporated into the analysis through a prior on the model. The associated uncertainties on the systemic proper motions are on average a factor of $\sim 1.4$ smaller than existing literature values. Analysis of the implied membership distribution of the satellites suggests we accurately identify member stars with a contamination rate less than 1 in 20., 30 pages, 8 figures, 8 tables. The Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey is a survey of $>400$ square degrees centered on the Andromeda (M31) and Triangulum (M33) galaxies that has provided the most extensive panorama of a $L_\star$ galaxy group to large projected galactocentric radii. Here, we collate and summarise the current status of our knowledge of the substructures in the stellar halo of M31, and discuss connections between these features. We estimate that the 13 most distinctive substructures were produced by at least 5 different accretion events, all in the last 3 or 4 Gyrs. We suggest that a few of the substructures furthest from M31 may be shells from a single accretion event. We calculate the luminosities of some prominent substructures for which previous estimates were not available, and we estimate the stellar mass budget of the outer halo of M31. We revisit the problem of quantifying the properties of a highly structured dataset; specifically, we use the OPTICS clustering algorithm to quantify the hierarchical structure of M31's stellar halo, and identify three new faint structures. M31's halo, in projection, appears to be dominated by two `mega-structures', that can be considered as the two most significant branches of a merger tree produced by breaking M31's stellar halo into smaller and smaller structures based on the stellar spatial clustering. We conclude that OPTICS is a powerful algorithm that could be used in any astronomical application involving the hierarchical clustering of points.
