Abstract Background Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a fatal autosomal recessive disorder for which several treatment options, including a gene therapy, have become available. SMA incidence has not been well-characterized in most Arab countries where rates of consanguinity are high. Understanding SMA disease epidemiology has important implications for screening, prevention, and treatment in those populations. Methods We perform SMA diagnostic testing in a clinical multi-national patient cohort (N = 171) referred for hypotonia and/or muscle weakness. In addition, we carry out genetic newborn screening for SMA on 1502 healthy Emirati newborns to estimate the carrier frequency and incidence of the disease in the United Arab Emirates. Results Patients referred for SMA genetic testing are mostly Arabs (82%) representing 18 countries. The overall diagnostic yield is 33.9%, which is higher (>50%) for certain nationalities. Most patients (71%) has two SMN2 copies and earlier disease onset. For the first time, we estimate SMA carrier frequency (1.3%) and incidence of the disease (1 in 7122 live births) in the United Arab Emirates. Using birth and marriage rates in two Arab populations (United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia), as well as disease incidence in both countries, we show that, besides preventing new cases, premarital genetic screening could potentially result in around $8 to $324 million annual cost savings, respectively, relative to postnatal treatment. Conclusions The SMA carrier frequency and incidence we document suggests high potential benefit for universal implementation of premarital genomic screening for a wide range of recessive disorders in Arab populations.

Prospective teachers' attitudes towards teaching are grounded in their experiences of successes and failures as students. Thus, addressing their attitudes towards teaching before starting their profession is strategic. To this aim, this study explored Jordanian prospective kindergarten teachers' attitudes towards the teaching profession. Furthermore, the study investigated the relative influence of participants' self-esteem, communication skills, and interest in the teaching process on these attitudes. A total of 234 university students who were pursuing their bachelor degree in kindergarten education participated in the study. These were selected from the six universities offering bachelor programs in childhood education in Jordan. Three scales were administered through the internet to collect data from students. The results showed that the behavioral component of communication skills was significantly associated with attitudes. Neither cognitive nor emotional communication skills were significant predictors. Undergraduate curricula should aim to cultivate positive attitudes while addressing and improving negative ones. Fostering prospective teachers' communication skills seemed to be a promising pathway to help promote positive attitudes and interest in teaching. Kindergarten education curriculum should help students improve, learn and use communication skills effectively.

Abstract The hyperarid mangrove in the Middle East is characterised by the absence of rivers or freshwater inputs and is one of the most extreme settings of this ecosystem on Earth. Endemic to Qatar’s hyperarid mangroves, a Palaemon shrimp is uniquely confined to a sole mangrove site in the Arabian Gulf. Within these mangrove channels, we unveiled brine groundwater sources exceeding 70 ppt salinity, contrasting the local marine standard of 42 ppt. Concurrently, a mysid species typically linked to salt pans and groundwater coexists. Stable isotopic analysis implied the existence of a predator–prey dynamic between this mysid species and the studied shrimp. Then, investigating the endemic shrimp’s adaptation to extreme salinity, we conducted osmolarity experiments and phylogenetic studies. Our findings demonstrate that this shrimp transitions from hypo- to hyper-osmoregulation, tolerating salinities from 18 to 68 ppt—an unprecedented osmoregulatory capacity among caridean shrimps. This speciation pattern likely arises from the species osmolarity adaptation, as suggested for other Palaemon congeners. Phylogenetic analysis of the studied Palaemon, along with the mangrove’s geological history, suggests a profound evolutionary interplay between the ecosystem and the shrimp since the Eocene. This study proposes the hyperarid mangrove enclave as an Athalassic mangrove oasis—a distinctive, isolated ecosystem within the desert landscape.

Abstract Studies of genetic factors associated with severe COVID-19 in young adults have been limited in non-Caucasian populations. Here, we clinically characterize a case series of patients with COVID-19, who were otherwise healthy, young adults (N = 55; mean age 34.1 ± SD 5.0 years) from 16 Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African countries. Using whole exome sequencing, we identify rare, likely deleterious variants affecting 16 immune-related genes in 17 out of 55 patients (31%), including 7 patients (41% of all carriers or 12.7% of all patients) who harbored multiple such variants mainly in interferon and toll-like receptor genes. Protein network analysis as well as transcriptomic analysis of nasopharyngeal swabs from an independent COVID-19 cohort (N = 50; 42% Asians and 22% Arabs) revealed that most of the altered genes, as identified by whole exome sequencing, and the associated molecular pathways were significantly altered in COVID-19 patients. Genetic variants tended to be associated with mortality, intensive care admission, and ventilation support. Our clinical cases series, genomic and transcriptomic findings suggest a possible role for interferon pathway genes in severe COVID-19 and highlight the importance of extending genetic studies to diverse populations to better understand the human genetics of disease.

Abstract Coastal Sabkhas are mudflats found in arid coastal regions that are located within the supratidal zone when high rates of evaporation lead to high salinity. While evaporitic minerals often accumulate underneath the surface, the microbial mats are present on the surface of Sabkhas. Coastal Sabkha, an under-studied ecosystem in Qatar, has the potential to store blue carbon. In the present study, we investigated the carbon storage capacity of two Sabkhas from contrasting geological backgrounds. The spatial and temporal variabilities of the carbon stocks were examined. The results showed that both studied Sabkhas exhibit a considerable potential for soil carbon storage with carbon stocks of 109.11 ± 7.07 Mg C ha−1 and 67.77 ± 18.10 Mg C ha−1 in Dohat Faishakh and Khor al Adaid Sabkha respectively. These values fall within the reported range for carbon stocks in coastal Sabkhas in the region (51–194 Mg C ha−1). Interestingly, the carbon stocks in the sediments of the Sabkhas were higher than those in the sediments of Qatari mangroves (50.17 ± 6.27 Mg C ha−1). These finding suggest that coastal Sabkhas can serve as blue carbon ecosystems in arid environments.

This study aims at examining the effect of using project-based learning on developing second-grade preparatory students’ life skills in Social Studies. A sample of (60) female students from Jihan El-Sadat Preparatory School for Girls in Dakahlia governorate was divided equally into controlled and experimental groups. For data collection, a life skills situations test was developed and implemented. The results revealed that there is a statistically significant difference at the level (0.05) between the mean scores of the experimental group students who studied using the project-based learning strategy and the mean scores of the controlled group students who used the traditional method in the post-application of the life skills situations test which indicated the effectiveness of using project-based learning in developing life skills in geography for preparatory stage pupils. The study recommends training teachers on using and incorporating the project-based learning strategy, as well as using a set of teaching strategies that help learners acquire life.

This study examined whether family environment and coping strategies mediate the relationship between adolescents' bullying involvement (being a bully or victim) and severity of depression. The study utilized a nationally representative school survey and gathered data from 1083 school adolescents (mean age 15.0 ± 1.4 years; 66% females; 46% from the central urban region; 71% had very good to excellent school GPA). The relationship between bullying involvement and depression was partially mediated by family environment and emotion-focused coping. No mediating effect was revealed for problem-focused coping in this relationship. Findings from this study might help understand how the effect of bullying transmits on adolescents' psychological health, allowing us to supply more in-depth information about the bullying phenomenon than what can be explained by direct effects alone. Family environment and coping strategies used by adolescents seemed to play a critical role in shaping their bullying experience and thus, incorporating these factors into available effective anti-bullying programs can be promising.

To grapple with the sterility and Whiteness of Western science, scholars have proposed a pedagogical shift to culturally relevant and/or culturally sustaining pedagogy. A key tenet of culturally relevant pedagogy is a focus on developing students’ ability to use the knowledge they obtain to identify, analyze, and solve real-world problems. Thus, the ability to foster this consciousness among students and make justice/injustice visible within biology curricula is an act of humanization. Here, we characterize and quantify the extent to which six prominent introductory biology US-based textbooks include humanizing content. First, we built consensus on what it means to humanize biology in a textbook by iteratively revising a coding protocol until we achieved a continuum of humanization. Our continuum evaluates the quantity, location, and the nature of the humanizing element within the textbook. Then, we used the continuum to collect data through qualitative coding: each chapter of each textbook was coded by two coders who came to consensus on the humanizing elements within. We find that in general, the inclusion of humanizing content in introductory biology textbooks is rare: of the 9,670 pages of textbooks that we analyzed, we found 1,352 humanizing passages but the vast majority of these were discussed in a single sentence (23%) or multiple sentences (61%), rarely multiple paragraphs (13%) or entire sections (2%). Similarly, of the 9,262 questions in the books (e.g., in section or chapter summaries), only 2.5% of them were humanizing and of those, only (64%) provided an answer, and of the ones that provided an answer, we only coded 42% of the answers as humanizing. In addition to quantifying the amount of humanization, we also describe the ways in which the passages were presented. For example, only about 9% of the humanizing passages included nuance, 5% discussed equity/inequity, and only 4% positioned biology as a means to accomplish justice. In all, we present what we believe is the most comprehensive assessment of humanizing elements in introductory biology textbooks and pair that with specific guidance to instructors who seek to include humanizing elements in their classes.

Background: To evaluate the preventive and therapeutic effects of CO2 laser and MI paste plus on intact and demineralized enamel surfaces and their impact on bacterial adhesion. Methods: 160 enamel slabs were prepared and randomly allocated into two main groups; sound and demineralized enamel (n = 80 per group), in which specimens were immersed in a demineralizing solution (50 mM acetic acid, pH 4.5) for 72 h at 37 °C. Each group was further divided into four subgroups (n = 20); the control (un treated surfaces), surfaces treated by CO2 laser, MI paste plus (Recaldent™, GC corporation/Germany), and those received a combination of CO2 and MI paste plus. Streptococcus Mutans biofilm was isolated, quantified, and then applied on treated enamel surfaces and incubated anaerobically for 24 h and then quantified by colony-forming unit (CFU). Abstract Aims/Introduction Limited studies have identified risk factors linked to the progression of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes. This study examined the association of risk factors with change in neuropathy measures over 2 years. Materials and Methods Participants with type 2 diabetes (n = 78) and controls (n = 26) underwent assessment of clinical and metabolic parameters and neuropathy using corneal confocal microscopy (CCM), vibration perception threshold (VPT), and the DN4 questionnaire at baseline and 2 year follow‐up. Results Participants with type 2 diabetes had a lower corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD), branch density (CNBD), and fiber length (CNFL) (P ≤ 0.0001) and a higher VPT (P ≤ 0.01) compared with controls. Over 2 years, despite a modest reduction in HbA1c (P ≤ 0.001), body weight (P ≤ 0.05), and LDL (P ≤ 0.05) the prevalence of DPN (P = 0.28) and painful DPN (P = 0.21) did not change, but there was a significant further reduction in CNBD (P ≤ 0.0001) and CNFL (P ≤ 0.05). The primary education plays an important role in the life of an individual as well as the nation as a whole. This study aims at investigating the level of psychological burnout in early childhood female teachers at public and private kindergarten schools. It also aims to prove whether these burnout levels differ according to the type of school, academic specialization, social status, and age. This study aims to identify the major causes of psychological burnouts from the teachers' perspectives. The researchers used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. In addition, the study sample consisted of 96 female teachers from all the kindergarten schools in Al-Salt educational directorate. The researchers were applied Maslach quantitative scale. Consequently, 8 female private kindergarten school teachers were interviewed. The main results showed that moderate to high levels of psychological burnouts are present. Thus, this is accompanied with statistical differences according to the type of kindergarten school and social status. No statistical differences recorded regarding academic specialization and age. The results also showed that work pressure, low income, and the management relationship with the parents are some of the main causes of psychological burnouts. The researchers recommended conducting more studies in order to reduce the reasons leading to psychological burnouts among teachers in general.

Much attention is being paid to the students who give evidence of high achievement capability in specific academic fields. This interest includes choosing sufficient teaching strategies that suit their characteristics. However, this study aims at identifying what teaching strategies are preferred by academically gifted students in Princess Rahma University College/Al-balqa Applied University. A validated scale, covered four dimensions, was developed to measure preferred teaching strategies. The four dimensions were Presentations, Accommodations for Individual Differences, Critical Thinking Strategies, and Creative Thinking Strategies. The study sample consisted of 66 students who were academically gifted. Results revealed that the highest teaching strategies preferred by the students that were related to Creative Thinking dimension followed by Critical Thinking Strategies, the lowest preferred teaching strategy was Presentations. The study urges instructors, who have academically gifted students in their classes, to carefully employ appropriate teaching strategies that meet their needs and increase their potentials.

The heterogeneous etiology of asthma makes its diagnosis complicated. Measurement of cytokine levels could be relevant in determining the asthma phenotype, predicting severity, and identifying the treatment type. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is one of the most reliable methods, with high sensitivity and specificity. This study aimed to determine the accuracy and utility of interleukin (IL)-13 and IL-17 A in diagnosing children with asthma. A total of 74 asthmatic and 75 healthy children were enrolled in this case-control study between 10/2019 and 3/2021. Sera were collected and analyzed for IL-13 and IL-17A using ELISA. Diagnostic utility assessment was performed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The results showed that both cytokines had a significant capacity to differentiate patients with asthma from the control group. The sensitivity and specificity for IL-17A were 97.3% and 52.0%, respectively, whereas for IL-13 it was 81.1% and 52.0%, respectively. Positive predictive values (PPV) were 66.7% and 62.5% for IL-17A and IL-13, respectively. In conclusion, although both biomarkers had low specificity, IL-17A was more sensitive in differentiating children with asthma from those in the control group and had a higher sensitivity rate than IL-13.

Acceptance plans for asphalt mixtures use a certain sample size that is often established based on the purpose of sampling, population size, risk, and allowable error for evaluation. The rate of quality control (QC) sample size is often higher than the quality assurance (QA) sample size. The test results obtained from the QA samples are commonly used to validate the QC test results and to assist the state department of transportation (DOT) with payment decisions. However, if the QA sample size is insufficient to make accurate judgments, the probability of making incorrect decisions regarding acceptance increases. On the other hand, oversampling needlessly consumes both time and cost. To identify the appropriate sample size for QA testing, a balance must be struck between a number of variables. In this case study, two models were developed using the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) data to determine the appropriate QA sample size. The need for this work was realized when a review of ODOT paving projects revealed a large variability in lot size. These ranged from 3000 to more than 100 000 tons with commensurate QA sample size rates. The typical standard deviation (STDEV) values of asphalt content (AC) and in-place density were determined. The developed models show that using the STDEV values that represented more than 90 percent of the projects, ODOT needed to increase QA sample size for both AC and density in lots of less than 22 000 tons. The results also show that sample can be decreased for AC and remain as is for density in projects of more than 22 000 tons of asphalt mixtures. The proposed models can be used to determine the optimum sample size for different lots sizes.

Abstract We describe a case series of five infants (age range: 1–90 days; 4 females and 1 male) who presented to Al Jalila Children’s intensive care units (ICU) with complex multisystem disorders. Patients were Emirati, Kenyan, Jordanian, Filipino, or Pakistani. Trio rapid whole genome sequencing (rWGS) was performed on all five patients and their parents within the hospital’s genomics facility. Results were returned within ~37 h from blood sample draws and were diagnostic in 3 out of 5 patients. Positive findings were a homozygous pathogenic variant in POMT1 gene causing muscular dystrophydystroglycanopathy, a mosaic tetrasomy of the short arm of chromosome 12 (12p13.33p11.1) causing Pallister-Killian syndrome, and compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in the LIPA gene causing lysosomal acid lipase deficiency and Wolman disease. The rWGS analysis provided fast and precise diagnostic findings in those 3 patients and also aided in devising better management plans for them in the intensive care setting. For example, the 3-month-old infant with pathogenic variants in the LIPA gene is now a candidate for an FDA-approved, potentially lifesaving enzyme replacement therapy (sebelipase alfa). Our case series emphasize the feasibility and utility of rWGS in pediatric intensive care setting, in a diverse population that has long been underserved in genomic services. Significant investments in local healthcare infrastructure are needed, globally, for more equitable access of genomic medicine among vulnerable patients.

This study demonstrated the impact of formic acid (FAc), a common reactive impurity in pharmaceutical excipients, on the stability of mirabegron (MB). The investigation of MB‐excipient compatibility tests revealed the formation of a new degradation product, FAc‐DP, at 0.2% after 7 days of isothermal stress at 55°C. Middle Eastern and Arab countries have been experiencing significant advancements in scientific research and development over the past few decades. Understanding the trends, patterns, and impact of research within this region can provide valuable insights into its scientific landscape, identify areas of strength, and uncover potential areas for improvement. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research productivity in the Middle Eastern and Arab region over a 20-year period. The findings revealed a consistent increase in research productivity, yet mapped significant disparities between countries in scholarly output, excellence, and impact. Adjusting for population size and GDP, Iran displayed the highest publication activity, trailed by Egypt and Turkey. Delving into the distribution of research output across different journal quartiles, the results revealed that this region has a lower percentage of scholarly output published in high-impact journals (both the top 10% and the top 25% categories). Compared to North America and the European Union, the Middle Eastern and Arab region consistently exhibited lower performance in terms of top 10% citations, average citations per publication, and field-weighted citation impact. The field of physical sciences took the lead as the most prevalent subject area in the Middle Eastern and Arab region, comprising about 60.5% of the research emphasis. Conversely, social sciences garnered comparatively less research attention, making up approximately 8.9% of the focus. The region showed strong international collaboration levels (40.5%), yet relatively low national (24.4%) and academic–corporate collaborations (1.5%). The outcomes of this study can facilitate international comparisons and benchmarking, allowing Middle Eastern and Arab countries to position themselves within the global scientific community. There remains a need to prioritize quality over quantity by emphasizing rigorous research practices and collaboration. An ongoing evaluation of research performance using a combination of indicators can help track progress and adjust strategies as needed.

School bullying is recognized as a global problem and sparks public concerns for students' safety. While it has recently emerged as a critical concern in the Arab world, particularly in Jordan, no national studies have yet investigated the extent of bullying in Jordanian schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, correlates, and experiences of bullying among a national sample of Jordanian adolescent students. A stratified random sampling procedure was used to select schools that represent the three main regions of Jordan (i.e. north, middle, and south) and a weighted sample of schools was randomly selected using Statistical Analysis System 9.4 based on provinces' density. A nationally representative sample of 1083 adolescents aged 12 to 17 was included in the study. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires on school bullying and adolescent sociodemographics. The prevalence of bullying among Jordanian adolescents was consistent with international studies; 7% reported their involvement in bullying as a victim, 7.6% as a bully, and 1.7% as both. Verbal bullying was the most common form of bullying among victims and bully-victim, while relational bullying was the most prevalent bullying for bullies. Being a perpetrator was more prevalent among boys than girls. Adolescent students who came from low socioeconomic status or whose fathers were illiterate reported more victimization experience. The majority of students who experienced bullying reported negative attitudes of bystanders, parents, and teachers towards intervening or responding to the bullying experience. Bullying exists among Jordanian students and active steps towards addressing this phenomenon are discussed. This is the first known Jordanian study representing a national sample of adolescent students' experience of bullying. Findings present valuable information for school professionals, parents, and students regarding bullying and its associated factors. These findings also provide an avenue for the adoption and implementation of available anti-bullying programs to ameliorate bullying behaviors among Jordanian school students.

The water hammer (WH) phenomenon is one of the most dangerous phenomena in hydraulic systems, especially pipelines, gates, and locks on these lines. There are many analytical solutions to deal with the WH phenomenon, including the treatment of friction losses, but most solutions use linear arithmetic operations, which depart from the actual situation of the WH phenomenon. Also, the methods currently used are most challenging and complex and give imprecise results to treat the mentioned phenomenon. In order to reach a state closer to the situation of losses and stability of the hydraulic system that is close to the actual state, basic partial differential equations were used, taking into account the losses generated in the hydraulic system through mathematical conversion. MATLAB was used to program and solve equations, find mathematical results, draw system diagrams, and simulate a WH wave. Various parameters were investigated to show the stability behavior of the hydraulic system by using state-space Method. So, the effect of the pressure, flow rate, diameter, and fluid type were investigated to calculate the stability of the hydraulic system. The results evaluated showed that the system’s oscillation is less at lower pressure, and the stability period is longer than that at high pressures. In addition, the system needs a longer time to stabilize at the low flow speed due to pressure waves that occur. The stability of the system affected by the WH was examined, and the effect of fluid-specific variables such as velocity, pressure, and type of fluid in addition to the diameter of the pipe and their impact on WH stability was found. The behavior of stability at the WH is nonlinear, and that is why the linear and nonlinear parts of the governing equations of the structure are used to find system through the state-space method through programming and simulation of MATLAB program.

In this article, a numerical model based on site theory is developed to study the stability of a pipeline system consisting of a valve, pipe, and surge tank. In the study, four parameters were studied to see how they impact the water hammer phenomenon. They are the pressure in the pipelines, the velocity of the flow, diameter of the conduit carrying liquid, and the liquid’s density. The equations are programmed, analyzed, and graphed using MATLAB. The stability analysis shows that the force of the water hammer is significant at low frequencies and for large diameters. The high frequency of a particular pipe is affected by the type of material the pipe is made from, the method of installation, and the friction coefficient of the inner surface. High frequencies reduce the impact of water hammer forces. Among the main parameters listed, it is found that the oscillations of liquids of low density are higher in the case of water hammers.

Abstract Risk genes for Mendelian (single-gene) disorders (SGDs) are consistent across populations, but pathogenic risk variants that cause SGDs are typically population-private. The goal was to develop “QChip1,” an inexpensive genotyping microarray to comprehensively screen newborns, couples, and patients for SGD risk variants in Qatar, a small nation on the Arabian Peninsula with a high degree of consanguinity. Over 108 variants in 8445 Qatari were identified for inclusion in a genotyping array containing 165,695 probes for 83,542 known and potentially pathogenic variants in 3438 SGDs. QChip1 had a concordance with whole-genome sequencing of 99.1%. Testing of QChip1 with 2707 Qatari genomes identified 32,674 risk variants, an average of 134 pathogenic alleles per Qatari genome. The most common pathogenic variants were those causing homocystinuria (1.12% risk allele frequency), and Stargardt disease (2.07%). The majority (85%) of Qatari SGD pathogenic variants were not present in Western populations such as European American, South Asian American, and African American in New York City and European and Afro-Caribbean in Puerto Rico; and only 50% were observed in a broad collection of data across the Greater Middle East including Kuwait, Iran, and United Arab Emirates. This study demonstrates the feasibility of developing accurate screening tools to identify SGD risk variants in understudied populations, and the need for ancestry-specific SGD screening tools.

Background: Coronavirus, which causes respiratory illness, has been a public health issue in recent decades. Because the clinical symptoms of infection are not always specific, it is difficult to expose all suspects to qualitative testing in order to confirm or rule out infection as a test. Methods: According to the scientific studies and investigations, seventy-three results of scientific articles and research were obtained using PubMed, Medline, Research gate and Google Scholar. The research keywords used were COVID-19, coronavirus, blood parameters, and saliva. Results: This review provides a report on the changes in the blood and saliva tests of those who are infected with the COVID-19.COVID-19 is a systemic infection that has a substantial influence on the hematological system and hemostasis, thus deviations from normal levels of laboratory tests, including the blood and saliva test show that specific testing for detecting COVID-19 infection is required. Conclusions: The blood and saliva tests aid in the clinical monitoring of the patient's health. It has advantages such as the following: it has non-invasive properties, low cost, and good stability, addition to minimum risk of infection transport.

Purpose. To synthesize new isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione derivatives by molecular hybridization of gabapentin and pregabalin with phthalic anhydride derivatives and to evaluate their biological activity as promising antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents. Method. Molecular hybridization was successfully achieved by two procedures; synthesized compounds were characterized using analytical and spectral methods. The free radical scavenging properties of synthesized compounds were evaluated using the DPPH method. The antibacterial activity of synthesized compounds and parent compounds was evaluated against two microbial Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains by the well diffusion method. Furthermore, we have studied the effect of compounds on proliferation, cell cycle, and cell death in two human cancer cell lines (Caco-2 and HCT-116). Results. Compounds 1, 3, and 4 exhibited a good free radical scavenging effect, and compound 3 is the most effective with IC50 value of 2.525 μmol/mL. All compounds showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus related to concentration, while parent drugs did not exhibit any antibacterial effect. Compounds 1 and 2 showed a good zone of inhibition against E. coli at micromolar concentrations, and they are more effective than Gentamicin Sulfate. Treatment with the studied compounds suppresses proliferation, arrests progress throughout the cell cycle, and induces apoptosis in Caco-2 and HCT-116 cancer cells. Compound 2 is highly effective against Caco-2 cells and more effective than thalidomide, with IC50 value less than 1 μmol/L. Conclusion. Our results showed that molecular hybridization of gabapentin and pregabalin in the isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione moiety results in promising anticancer and antimicrobial molecules. Results of this preliminary study show that halogenation of the isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione moiety improves antimicrobial and anticancer activity and that tetra-brominated derivatives are comparable to or more effective than related tetra-chlorinated derivatives.

In this study, we have established promising drug candidates with approved antimicrobial, antioxidant, antileishmanial, and anticancer activities. We hereby report drug likeliness, ADME prediction, synthesis, characterization, and in vitro biological evaluation of isoindole-1,3-(2H) dione derivatives. Synthesized compounds showed a free radical scavenging effect, with compound 1 being the most effective (IC50 value 1.174 μmol/mL). The antibacterial activity of compounds was studied against two microbial Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains by well diffusion method. The inhibition zone of compound 3 is comparable with the inhibition zone of gentamycin at the same concentration. The compounds are highly effective against Leishmania tropica with compound 3 being the most effective one (IC50 0.0478 μmol/mL). The compounds are highly potential for the treatment of Leishmania tropica, and they are more effective than the first-line treatment, Glucantime. Compounds showed good antiproliferative activity against two human cancer cell lines (Caco-2 and HCT-116). Treatment with studied compounds arrests progress throughout the cell cycle and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Data from structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis revealed that lipophilic properties of compounds might enhance their activity as antimicrobial, antileishmanial, and antiproliferative activity. The halogenation of isoindole-1,3 (2H) dione moiety increases antimicrobial, antileishmanial, and anticancer activities. Tetra-brominated derivatives are more effective than tetra-chlorinated derivatives.

Leishmania major is a protozoan parasite that causes cutaneous Leishmaniasis disease in human beings and animals. The disease is prevalent in tropical and semitropical countries and has great health importance. The present study aimed to identify the histological changes in the organs infected with L. major and to provide a sophisticated diagnostic method for infection through detecting TGF-β cytokine by immunohistochemistry technique(IHC) from October 2020 to January 2021. A total of 40 samples of paraffin blocks were used for different organs including skin, spleen, liver, kidney, and heart of male and female BALB/c mice, aged 6-8 weeks, which were previously infected subcutaneously with L. major promastigotes at a dose of 1×107 promastigotes/moues. The result indicated epidermal hyperplasia with diffuse severe lymphohistiocytic inflammatory cells infiltration in the dermis. Hyperplasia of the lymphoid follicles was observed in infected spleen and scattered polymorphonuclear cells mainly neutrophil masses with a random distribution of microgranulomas foci composed of lymphocytes and macrophages within the liver parenchyma around central veins and portal areas. The infected kidney showed aggregation of perivascular mononuclear cells (lymphocytes and macrophages) in the renal cortex. Mononuclear lymphocytes and macrophages were observed within the heart parenchyma especially around blood vessels. Additionally, evaluation of TGF-β1 expression was highly strong for skin, spleen, relatively strong for liver, heart, and weak for the kidney. In conclusion, infection was accompanied by clinical and histological changes as well as inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, the determination of TGF-β expression level depends on the diagnosis of infection. A clear understanding of immune mechanisms is essential for preventing, treating, and controlling strategies of this infection.

The research aimed to determine the effect of the learning centres strategy and common strategy in learning some of soccer basic skills and to identify the differences between learning centres strategy and common strategy of the post-test in some of soccer basic skills. The researchers assumed that there is an effect of learning centres strategy and common strategy in learning some of soccer basic skills and statistically significant differences between learning centres strategy and common strategy. Research utilized experimental approach, the research population consist of (144) first year students, in the Institutes of Physical Education in Erbil for the academic year (2019-2020) by intentional method, the research sample was selected randomly by lottery operator as (24) students divided into two divisions, (A) experimental group (Implementation of learning centres strategy), (D) control group (Implementation of common strategy). After conducting homogeneity and equivalence, the education program was applied. However, the main experiment started on 31/10/2019 and end 23/01/2020 (12) weeks with 12 educational units for each group, and the time for the unit was (40) minutes. The post-test performed under the same conditions of the pre-test and processing the data statistically using the statistical bag (SPSS). The researchers concluded that the educational program, according to the learning centres strategy has a positive effect on learning soccer basic skills, and positive effect of common strategy in two skills (dribbling and controlling). Furthermore, superiority of learning centres strategy in compared to the common strategy in skills (short passed, middle passes, controls, shots).
